A mathematical model is presented which allows the free or hindered settling velocity to he calculated for any size or- shape particle in any fluid, and at any percent solids up to the maximum. The validity of the model is supported by comparing calculated velocities (or viscosities) with measured values for 1073 data points contained in 80 sets of data encompassing a range of Reynolds’ numbers, from 0.002 to 770.000. The average error was 0.69%, with an average standard deviation of 6.65%. The derivation of the model is too lengthy to include in this paper, which will specifically present the application of the model to the free settling of minerals and spheres, prediction of the friction factor in wind tunnel tests, the viscosity of suspensions of spheres, the hindered settling of mono-sized spheres and closely sized minerals, and the settling of large spheres in suspensions of small spheres.

The Clyde Power Project, and its Clutha Valley Development forerunner, has taken widespread investigations for various hydroelectric purposes both along the valley floors upstream from Alexandra and on the higher schist terrain. As part of this work the nature and extent of many of the alluvial deposits have been resolved and the ages established with varying precision. Gold values have been approximately appraised in some areas as an element of environmental assessment.

The bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory scale investigation of the process of selective flocculation with the objective of developing a method to effect separations on suspensions consisting predominately of ultra-fine-size (minus 400-mesh) particles of coal and refuse. Selective flocculation of coal from coal-refuse slurries could be achieved with a wide variety of reagents. Typically as much as 15 to 20 weight-percent of high-ash solids (70 to 80 percent ash) could be retained in suspension. The flocculated sediment remained a high-ash product, however, and would require further treatment to be regarded as clean coal. No combination of reagents and conditions led to selective flocculation of the refuse component. The dispersing agent was found to be the critical factor; dosages of 3 to 8 lb/ton2 were necessary to stabilize the suspension for subsequent selective flocculation. In addition, most of the dispersants that worked were most effective at substantially elevated pH (11 or so). It was concluded that this process would be prohibitively expensive and, because of yield and quality constraints, it would be of questionable utility in today's coal preparation industry.

Exploration for uranium in Australia commenced only during the 1940s, but in this short period has been very successful as one third of the world's low cost uranium reserves have been discovered in Australia. Total uranium exploration expenditure in Australia up to the end of 1983 was $A(1983) 554 million; this discovered 20 potentially economic deposits and official reserves of 560 000 tonnes of uranium oxide at an average cost of $1 per kg of U 0 . An exponential 8 eserves indicates distribution of uranium r that there could be 54 undiscovered uranium deposits in Australia, each with reserves of 20 000 tonnes U308 or more, in addition to smaller deposits. Using a constant uranium price of $A(1983) 79 per kg, no deposit is economic at a grade below 0.12 per cent U 08 or with reserves of less than 3 000 tonnes. Selecting deposits with reserves of 5 000 tonnes U 0g or more as prime exploration targets, only 39 per cent of discoveries will yield a real internal rate of return (IRR) of 10 per cent or more. After committing a minimum exploration budget of $10 million to this search, an explorer has one chance between 7 and 12 of discovering a deposit that will repay the exploration investment.

The opencast lignite mines in the Rhinel and Di strict/Germany are equipped with the continuously operating bucket-wheel excavator - conveyor - spreader system. High productivity requires large capital expenditure on main mine equipment as a precondition for efficient mining. In operation, the technology employed leads to a particular cost pattern which is quite different from that of other industries. Labour, auxiliary equipment and mobile vehicles are the most important cost factors which can be controlled by the management. In this respect information processing computer systems are used for systematical and interpretable representation of operational tasks and jobs both in planning and work preparation and in recording the operational data describing the work result and the use of resources. Another aim of the project is to relieve the middle management of major part of its administrative routine work. Job-related work planning and data recording open up various possibilities of analyzing the operational procedures. This analysis shows, for example, what auxiliary machines are particularly suitable for specific tasks, and working groups can be organized so as to take account of the different skills of individual employees for the sake of an optimal work product. Computerized information processing provides the decision makers with topical information related to their respective responsibilities. The mining department of the Hambach opencast mine is the first user of the PERMAD system. Due to the favorable evaluation it has been decided to introduce PERMAD in three other mines in the course of 1992/93.

"The usage of binders or pozzolanic materials in the production of concrete is not new. However, in recent years, the use of the pozzolanic siliceous material such as natural zeolite and coal combustion ash (CBA) has received re-attention due to the generated considerable interest in the economical use of both naturally occurring raw materials, recycling of the waste material and saved energy. In this study, the potential and utilization opportunities of natural zeolites and bottom ash (BA) in concrete applications were reviewed. Case studies, conducted to determine the possible usage of the natural zeolite and BA in concrete production, i.e. light weight concrete (LWC) were also presented. The physical and mechanical properties of cured concretes were examined to find out the competitive material usage on the final product properties. Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) with 1.1 nm tobermorite (5CaO 6SiO2 5H2O) as binder is a lightweight construction material that mainly uses in place of concrete to manufacture various building materials, including blocks, panels, slabs and the like. The material is a mixture of sand, lime, cement, gypsum, water and an expanding agent, which causes the raw material to rise like bread dough, with countless small air pores. AAC can be molded and cut into precisely dimensioned units and cured in an autoclave, which steam cures the concrete under pressure. During this process, the ingredients combine to form the calcium silicate hydrate gels that establish the special properties of the finished product. The process produces a material that is only one-fourth to one-third the weight of a conventional concrete block (bulk density of 400-800 kg /m3) of the same size. Regular AAC offers considerable advantages over other construction materials such as high thermal and sound insulation, excellent fire resistance, high resource and energy efficiency, low environmental impact, and finally outstanding structural performance (especially for earthquake zones) [1]. Its lightweight also makes it easy to use during construction, and its aerated structure gives it better thermal insulation and sound absorption properties than conventional concrete."

El presente texto revisa la historia minera de Morococha. Aunque no se tienen datos exactos sobre el inicio de la explotación de esta minera, existen indicios primitivos de este proceso antes de la llegada de los españoles. Durante el Coloniaje se comenzaron a trabajar minerales oxidados que se beneficiaban por amalgamación en «circos»; asi como las galerías y pavonados que se fundían en horno de «pachamanca». Posteriormente, don Martín de Bidegaray, minero, azoguero y hacendado, solicitó licencia para levantar un Ingenio (Molino de metales) en el paraje San Martín de Tuctu de Morococha. El virrey le concedió y se construyó el molino de metales, constituyéndose la partida de nacimiento de la industria metalúrgica en Morococha y toda la región central del Perú. Sin embargo, la lucha por la Independencia Nacional paralizó por completo la naciente industria minera del Coloniaje, quedando en abandono las labores de extracción de minerales, sumándose la escasez de barreteros. Por ello, el señor Izcue, recurrió a Carlos Pflucker, hombre enérgico y emprendedor, quien pronto se convierte en el pionero de la Pirometalurgia al tratar de fundir minerales de cobre en hornos de Reverberación construidos por tres operarios fundidores traídos por él especialmente de Alemania. Finalmente muere el señor Izcue y Pflucker decide contratar más barreteros y convirtió a Morococha en una próspera Hacienda Minera, descubriendo nuevas minas de plata e instalando modernos procesos metalúrgicos de amalgamación y cloruración en Tuctu. Así, en 1905 el señor James B. Haggin adquirió las propiedades de la Compañía Minera de Santa Inés Y Morococha, y en el año 1908 por acción de los señores Haggin y A. W . McCune se constituyó la Morococha Mining Company, entidad de la que también formaron parte integrantes los miembros de la Cerro de Paseo Syndicate.

The growth and shrinkage rates of second-phase particles of various size distributions are analyzed in terms of five mathematical models. These models apply to various forms of diffusion-controlled growth (one model) and interjace-controlled growth (four models). The expression for diffusion-controlled growth assumes local equilibrium at the interface between the second Phase and the matrix and through the choice of the proper flux area perrnits the definition of minimum diffusion-controlled growth kinetics. The interface-controlled kinetics models consider the situations where the rate-controlling step occurs at either the interlace undergoing solution or the interface undergoing deposition. In addition, each of these interface-controlled kinetics models is analyzed for interface reaction rates which are independent of the thermodynamic activity gradient across the interface or proportional to the gradient. THE variation of the size distribution of second-phase particles in a solute-saturated matrix has been a stimulating topic for many years. Research has been carried out in this area for situations where the matrix was either liquid or solid. It is well-understood that the over-all process results in an increase in the average particle size, a decrease in the total number of particles per unit volume, and a net decrease in surface area. Greenwood1 has presented a mathematical model based upon the mass balance existing between growing and shrinking particles. His analysis is stated in terms of Fick's First Law using concentration gradients set up between particles of different size as a result of the effect of surface curvature on solubility. Greenwood's analysis indicates that the mean particle size should increase approximately as the cube root of time. Asimow2 has shown that several of the simplifying assumptions employed by Greenwood may be eliminated from this diffusion-controlled model with little increase in complexity. Lifshits and Slyozov3-5 have also considered the growth-shrinkage problem involving diffusion-controlled kinetics. Their analysis was extended to include the effects of interacting particles ("kinetic approximation"), particle shape, and elastic strains. These authors also show that the mean particle size varies as the cube root of the reaction time. wagner6 has formulated expressions for both diffusion-controlled kinetics and interface-controlled kinetics in the growth-shrinkage problem. Wagner's diffusion-controlled kinetics is based upon the same form of mass balance using Fick's First Law as used by others and is shown to be applicable to situations where kr >> D (k is the interface reaction constant, r is the particle radius, and D is the diffusion coefficient). This analysis also yields a mean particle size which varies as the cube root of time, in agreement with other workers. Wagner also developed interface-controlled kinetics to handle kr « D. This model was based upon the fact that the interface reaction rate is proportional to the interface area. Wagner assumed that the rate was also proportional to the thermodynamic activity difference, ?a, existing across the interface. Thus, the specific reaction rate at the surface of radius r was defined as k • 4nr2 . ?a. It is the purpose of the present paper to reconsider the processes of diffusion-controlled growth and interface-controlled growth in the variation of particle-size distributions as a function of time at constant second-phase volume. Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approximately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segregation. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. Internal friction measurements from 25° to 1100°C have been made on specimens machined from TD nickel bar. The use of miniature torsional pendulum specimens alloived damping measurements to be made on specimens whose axes were parallel to the original bar axis, at 45 deg to the bar axis, and at 90 deg to the bar axis. There was a marked difference in damping with varying specimen orientation, and this was related to the pronounced micro structural anisotropy of this material. Varying the microstructure by cold working plus re crystallization annealing also greatly affected the damping behavior. Recrystallization essentially removed the broad peak found at 400° to 650°C in as-received TD nickel, and in addition greatly lowered the background damping. DlSPERSION hardened metals such as SAP-type alloys (Al + AI2O3) and TD nickel (Ni + 2 pet ThO2) have been developed primarily to improve high temperature strength properties. There have been numerous damping studies on SAP-type alloys,1"9 and one of these6 showed that the damping capacity was greater than that of 99.5 pet pure Al from 25° to 600°C. Several preliminary observations on TD nickel10 and an experimental Ni-ThO2 alloy11 indicated that here, too, the damping capacity was quite high. A high damping capacity in TD nickel, combined with its relatively good high temperature creep strength, could provide an additional benefit for some high temperature structural applications. This work was undertaken to study the internal friction behavior of TD nickel bar over the temperature range 25° to 1100°C. In Ni-ThO2 and Ni-Cr-ThOz alloys, other properties such as steady-state creep rate,12 creep rupture life,12'13 modulus of elasticity,14 and ultimate tensile strength,14 are sensitive to orientation with respect to the primary working direction. Thus, in order to examine anisotropy effects in damping, studies were made on specimens machined with their axes parallel, at 45 deg, and transverse to the original bar axis. MATERIAL DESCRIPTION AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The material used in this investigation was from the same £ in. diam TD nickel bar that has been studied previously.13'15 The structure typical of the as-received TD nickel is shown in Fig. 1, and additional details of the structure can be found in Refs. 13 and 15. Elongated grains are parallel to the bar axis and are about 10 to 15 u long and about 1 u in diam. This structure is very stable, since no recrys-tallization or grain growth occurred after annealing for 3 hr at 1300°C.13 The total ThO2 content was 2.3 vol pct and the particles ranged in diameter from 100 to 1000. The average particle diameter was 370Å and the mean planar center-to-center particle spacing was 2340Å. To examine the influence of grain and subgrain structure on damping, a section of TD nickel bar was swaged and drawn at room temperature from 1/2 in. diam bar to 0.040 in. diam wire (99.3 pct re-duction in area). The structure in Fig. 2 resulted after the wire was annealed for 3 hr at 1250°C. A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

Stress analysis programs such as MULSIM/NL, LAMODEL, MinSim 2000, and EXAMINE TAB are used in the mining industry to analyze stresses and displacements in coal mines, platinum mines, gold reefs, and tabular-type deposits. These relatively simple numerical models can efficiently simulate yielding and failure of a rock mass near a mine opening and subsequent stress transfer. The main input parameters for these models are a family of nonlinear stress-strain curves for the in-seam material. For many applications of these models, such as in coal mining, extensive field measurements and observations exist from which to estimate these stress-strain curves and calibrate the numerical models; however, such measurements are lacking for other types of mines. A three-step method is presented to determine nonlinear stress¬strain curves for boundary-element (BE) programs used in many mining applications. The method requires a suite of laboratory¬scale strength tests at various confining pressures. Note that this analysis uses laboratory-measured strength and modulus properties of alluvium. The dependency of the mechanical properties of alluvium on scale has not been established, although more tests are being planned. However, it is believed that the relative comparisons performed are valuable regardless of scale effects. First, the FLAC2D computer program is used to model the laboratory tests and determine cohesion (c) and friction angle (0) for a Mohr-Coulomb material model. Second, another FLAC2D model uses the c and 0 values to calculate vertical stress and strain around a single opening in the rock mass. This model calculates the stress-strain path of points at various distances from the opening boundary. Finally, based on these stress-strain paths, the stress-strain curves needed for a BE analysis are derived. This three-step method was demonstrated in a large, flat-lying underground test facility in very weak rock. The BE analyses agreed well with observations of failure at the test facility and provided a basis for evaluating the behavior of alternative layouts.

Optimization of current control systems, proper maintenance and efficient training of personnel are recommendations made to control the amount of dust that underground employees are exposed to on a daily basis in the coal mining industry. This dissertation forms as part of Sasol Mining?s commitment to protect the health and safety of their employees by suppressing and controlling dust at their mines. This study aims to understand the relationship among mining processes, exposure to dust and dust suppression control measures. The research phase of the project was done at the Sasol Mining Secunda complex where underground visits were undertaken to investigate current control systems and also new systems that are being implemented by Sasol Mining. This work was important because it helped determine the sources of dust underground and also to identify the shortcomings of current control systems and to test the efficiencies of the new systems implemented at Sasol Mining. The most important result of the research work was the identification of which underground operators were exposed the most to dust as this assisted in designing a dust suppression system for the areas where these operators worked. The main conclusions of this study are that the current control systems are sufficient for controlling dust and ensuring dust compliance if they are used efficiently and maintained properly.

The Cerro Vanguardia mine is an AngloGold Limited operation in southern Argentina that includes multiple open pits and a hybrid Merrill-Crowe and CIL circuit to recover gold and silver from oxide ore. Operations were commissioned at the site in 1998, which included a plant in the metallurgical circuit to recover cyanide from mill tailings. The cyanide recovery plant was initially configured to process tailings slurry and achieved greater than 90% cyanide recovery from tailings containing about 600 to 800 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). The cyanide recovery circuit was operated in this manner for approximately eight months, during which time the consumption of sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide was relatively high, leading to high rates of scale formation in the acidification tank and stripping towers. In July 1999, several piping changes were made in the cyanide recovery system to permit its operation with clear solution, which reduced the sulphuric acid consumption and eliminated scale formation in process equipment. The cyanide recovery system currently operates with a two-stage counter-current decantation (CCD) circuit which provides clear solution for processing in the cyanide recovery plant. The cyanide recovery efficiency now averages about 90% to 92% from solution containing about 350 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). Recovered sodium cyanide now accounts for about two-thirds of the total cyanide added to the leaching circuit. This paper presents a description of the cyanide recovery plant and details regarding its current operating efficiency.

In June, 1893, while I was with the Old Dominion Copper Co. at Globe, Ariz., I received an offer to take charge, as manager, of the Baltimore Electric? Refining Co. which had recently built a plant at Baltimore, Md., having a capacity of about 1200 tons of electrolytic copper per month, using the Hayden series system. This was a very large output, for in those days the plants were small and the art was in its infancy. At the beginning of 1893 there were 11 electrolytic refineries in the United States, most of them using the multiple system. The Hayden series system was used at Baltimore and Bridgeport and the Smith series system was in operation at the Electrolytic Copper Co. at Ansonia, COM., and at the Pennsylvania Salt Co. at Philadelphia. In the latter system the plates were placed in a horizontal position, but the operating difficulties were so numerous it was soon discarded. The total production of these 11 plants in 1892 was very small; I have not been able to discover reliable figures of production. IT has long been known that the volcanic area south of Belmont, Nye county, Nevada, had mining possibilities. Some of the old-time prospectors knew that gold existed there. Its remoteness from any source of supplies, its long distances from water, the absence of game, and more, perhaps, the lack of grass for animals to subsist upon, has made this an unattractive region in which to search for mines. The decline of the Comstock mines, the exhaustion of sun-dry large and rich ore-bodies, the high cost of mining, marketing, and particularly the ruinously high freight-charges upon refractory ore that had to be shipped to distant smelters, have kept investors out of Nevada for the last few years; and mining people have hardly yet awakened to the importance of Tonopah, Goldfield and perhaps the newer and less developed districts. The discovery of Tonopah by J. L. Butler, who located the Mizpah Claim in May, 1900, and the fortunes soon realized there, attracted many people. As the boom declined, many went away, some scattering out into the surrounding country, and the population is now about 7,000. In the fall of 1902 a discovery of gold was made 23 miles south, in what is now known as the Sandstorm group, 4 miles NW. of Goldfield. In the winter of 1903-4 the Combination, January and Florence mines were discovered, and shipments of high-grade ore soon followed. In January, 1905, there were 10,000 people in Goldfield. In June, 1904, rich gold-ore was found 85 miles SE., at the foot of the south end of the Kawich mountains, but this discovery was kept quiet until a re-location could be made. On August 10, 1904, the Bullfrog claims, and a month later the Ladd mountain and neighboring claims, were located. The Shoshone group was located September 24. This district is

Copper vermiculite is a special nanomaterial with excellent antibacterial and antifungal performance. By means of ion exchange, copper vermiculite containing up to 5.8wt% copper was prepared. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the material was investigated in this study based on the XRD, AAS, TEM and EDS analysis, as well as the calculation of crystalline parameters and crystal chemical formula. Cu2+ and Mg2+ have similar atom radius and same electrovalence. Correspondingly, the structure character of copper vermiculite is very close to that of standard Mg-vermiculite. Most of the CU21 may have occupied the interlayer cationic positions in the form of hydrate in vermiculite. However, some may have entered into octahedral coordinate positions. The values of au and bo of the copper vermiculite crystal cell have no obvious change compared to that of original vermiculite micropowder, but the Co value decreased slightly, which is desirable for the stabilization of the Cu2+ in copper vermiculite.
