Las minas de Bolivia fueron descubiertas durante el siglo XX, donde los depósitos tienen una relación con los cuerpos ígneos de sección circular y terminan como nabos en profundidad. Asimismo, se trabajan las vetas angostas, donde sus raíces están en la parte baja de las montañas y se originan las enigmáticas formaciones bandeadas de hierro pre-cámbricas en el mundo.

Based on systematic definitions of a generalized multiple fan ventilation system, the concepts of an augmented system, its solution curve and the operating points of the original system are introduced. The Quasi-Newton algorithm is applied in combination with the switching-parameter method to ensure a continuous search along an augmented-system solution curve and identify all the possible system operating points on it. Two example networks are analyzed to demonstrate those concepts and the application of the algorithm for identifying operating points of multiple fan ventilation systems.

The Bureau of Mines monitored the water quality in and near a copper/gold tailings impoundment. Samples were taken from the unsaturated %one. and dissolved concentrations of over ZO constituents were measured with respect to depth and moisture content, factors which influence oxygen content and sulfide oxidation. Samples from the unsaturated %one were drawn through a hypodermic needle sampler into individually evacuated vials fitted with septa, thus preventing oxygen contamination. Water quality was also monitored in the saturated tailings, underlying colluvial aquifer, and weathered andesite bedrock.

A high-purity copper-zirconium alloy system was imesti-gated. The zirconium content of the alloys studied varied from 0.003 to 0.23 pet. The solid solubility of zirconium in copper and some physical and mechanical properties of the alloys have been determined. By proper heat treatment, Cu-Zr alloy can develop a high electrical conductivity and resistance to softening at temperatures up to 500°C (930°F). This combination of desirable properties makes this alloy superior, to other com-merzcrrl copper base alloys for- use in the electrical conductor field. DEMAND for high conductivity copper alloys that retain their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures is growing rapidly. At present, copper-base alloys such as copper-silver and copper-chromium are used where these characteristics are required. As an example, commutators in electric motors are often made of these alloys. However, the life at elevated temperature of commutators made of copper-silver alloys is much shorter than the life of the same part made of copper-chromium and copper-zirconium alloys. Copper-silver alloys are subject to creep and subsequent failure when the service temperature exceeds several hundred degrees centigrade. Use of copper-chromium alloys has been known for the past several years, but little information is available in the literature concerning the properties of alloys in the copper-zirconium alloy system. Some work had been directed toward determining the solubility of zirconium in copper as well as determining properties of the Cu-Zr alloys. These investigations have revealed the superior high-temperature and electrical conductivity properties of copper-zirconium alloys over copper-chromium alloys. The United States Metals Refining Co., Carteret, N. J. has recently produced OFHC R copper-zirconium alloys for experimentation and evaluation. Because OFHC R copper contains no appreciable oxygen, no harmful oxides are formed and the full benefit of Zr as an alloying addition is obtained. This paper describes the results of this work. It contains room-temperature and some high-temperature data which have been obtained after various processing techniaues. Actual elevated temperature properties are being determined and will be reported in a separate paper. Preliminary results obtained at elevated temperatures suggest that the Cu-Zr alloy is superior to other high conductivity copper-base alloys. WORK PROCEDURE The high-purity oxygen free (OFHC R) copper-zirconium alloys with zirconium content ranging from 0.003 to 0.23 pct were cast into 4-by 4-in. wirebars by both continuous casting and conventional casting methods. Zr was added in the form of a master alloy containing 30 pct Zr and 70 pct Cu. Castings were analyzed for zirconium and nine bars containing various amounts of zirconium were selected for this study. The results of analyses and the sample numbers are given in Table I. Typical analyses of OFHC R copper are also shown. The following properties were studied: A) Solid solubility of zirconium in copper. B) Effect of zirconium on properties of copper. C) Effect of combined working and heat treating on properties of Cu-Zr alloys. The solid solubility of zirconium in copper was determined by metallographic techniques. Specimens for this phase of the investigation were hot rolled at 900oC (1650oF) to 0.250-in. rod. The rolled rods were cut into 2/3-in. long specimens and solution annealed at 950 °C (1740°F), 980°C (1795 °F). and 1020 °C (1870 °F) for 6 hr and quenched in water. In order to find the solid solubility limits at lower temperatures, the homogenized specimens were reheated at various temperatures for 1 hr and quenched. The physical and mechanical properties were determined on 0.250 in. rod, 0.132- and 0.081-in. wires. The wires were cold drawn from the 0.250-in. rods after they were solution annealed at 980 °C (1795°F) and quenched in cold water. This report presents the results of an investigation by Federal Bureau of Mines engineers of water-injection projects in the northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York area, where oil-producing wells have been converted from pumping to flowing. Data from 24 leases converted to flowing were collected and examined. Only 10 leases had information of significant scope for inclusion in the final analysis. The projects were classified in one of two categories. Group I consisted of leases operated to permit an evaluation of operational changes in terms of existing pressure differentials between injection and producing wells. Group II included remaining properties, for which enough information was available to justify an economic analysis but which did not have sufficient production data to support an engineering study because of radical changes in operational techniques. Variations in production and costs resulting from conversion to flowing were examined for production methods, well-spacing and completion techniques, and reservoir characteristics. Where water-injection rates were constant, oil production usually decreased rapidly at the time of conversion; production then increased slightly for 6 to 8 months before resuming a normal decline rate considerably below the estimated pumping rate. The abrupt decrease in production after conversion is indicative of lower pressure differentials between injection and producing wells, caused by the increased hydrostatic head in the producing wells.

Neste trabalho, tiras de aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32205 foram laminadas a morno a 600°C com 60% e 80% de redução e, em seguida, foram recozidas a 1050°C durante 300 s. A tira como fornecida (laminada a quente industrialmente e recozida) também foi recozida para efeito de comparação. Avaliou-se o comportamento mecânico das amostras como fornecida, 60% e 80% por meio de ensaios de tração e microdureza Vickers, obtendo-se 779 MPa, 730 MPa e 807 MPa de limite de resistência a tração e 265 HV, 244 HV e 256 HV de microdureza Vickers para as três condições descritas, respectivamente. Outros ensaios de microdureza foram realizados ao longo da superfície do corpo de prova fraturado em tração, indicando um aumento da dureza nas regiões mais próximas da fratura. O aumento da dureza na região de estricção indicou o aparecimento da martensita induzida por deformação para as amostras laminadas a morno. Usando a derivada da curva tensão verdadeira em função da deformação verdadeira, (ds/de), avaliou-se o comportamento de encruamento do aço para as três condições. Juntamente com os exames por microscopia eletrônica de alta resolução e difração de raios X, buscou-se uma interpretação dos mecanismos de deformação plástica envolvidos no processo de encruamento. Em determinados estágios, observou-se uma mudança da inclinação para um regime estável, indicando a ocorrência de outros mecanismos de deformação plástica, diferentes do escorregamento de deslocações. A martensita induzida por deformação foi considerada responsável pelo aumento da taxa de encruamento do aço, i.e., por ser obstáculo à movimentação das deslocações e por postergar a formação da estricção.

Petroleum requirements since V-J day have been appreciably higher than predicted. Foreign operations now exceed maximum wartime levels by about 14 per cent. Domestic operations since V-J day have averaged 92 Per cent of the wartime peak. In spite of maximum foreign refinery runs, large exports of all products, except residual fuel oil, are necessary to meet foreign demand. During the next few years it is expected that foreign operations will continue at capacity, including new installations, but that, because of increases in foreign demand, exports will continue at about their present level. Domestic operations will increase during this period and crude production probably will exceed maximum efficient rates. Even after 10 years some exports probably will be required, but eventually these will be supplanted by increased output of foreign refineries, except for small tributary exports. The increase in domestic requirements will exceed the decline in exports. Unless findings of crude oil exceed present expectations, the increasing demand will be met by increased imports and synthetic methods-—such as the Hydrocarbon Synthesis Process for conversion of natural gas and coal to gasoline and distillates. Catalytic cracking installations will increase as crude availability decreases. This will help to meet the increasing demand for gasoline but will intensify the domestic shortage of residual fuel oil. Eventually larger imports will be required to satisfy the demand for this product. Introduction Under the pressure of the wartime period, there was time only occasionaly to look ahead in anticipation of what the postwar era held for the petroleum industry. Perhaps the general expectation was that a rather pronounced decline in the level of industry petroleum operations would take place shortly after the end of the war, with the impact felt mainly on the economy of the United States- It is of interest now, nine months after V-J day, to take inventory of the near-term situation and see what significant forces are at work. With this as a starting point, it should be possible to engage in something more satisfactory than pure speculation concerning trends in the immediate future and 10 to 20 years ahead. WE have come a long way since the order of the day was the chance discovery of mineral deposits, breaking rock with fire and water, melting metals in open fires in holes in the ground or in primitive furnaces, digging pits to collect. oil seepages, burning eroded coal outcrops to develop heat, and so on. During the past 5500 years, gradual improvements in methods and equipment have come about, explosives have been developed and used, steel has been used in increasing quantities and effectiveness as its physical and chemical characteristics, and composition have been altered and made to serve specific ends, hand equipment has given way to almost completely mechanized operation Thus, by the aid of mechanical equipment, one person is now able to move several thousand times as much material as one person was able to move a relatively few years ago. When this Institute was formed 75 years ago, the Suez Canal had been open to traffic but three years. It had taken ten years to complete and was built under the direction of French engineers by workers of whom many were girls. During the first four years of construction, these workers dug up the sand with their fingers, threw it into rush baskets, carried the load a hundred feet or so and dumped it 2 (With the termination of forced labor, dredgers completed the digging of the channel.) Calculation of consistent steady-state mass balances in operating metallurgical plants and pilot plants is of interest for many reasons. In general, enough data can - and should - be collected to overdefine the system, i.e., permit calculation of nonmeasured quantities via more than one path. In such cases, resulting steady-state metallurgical mass balances rarely close due to sampling, analysis and/ or instrument error. Indeed, determination of a valid calculational sequence for complicated process flowsheets with multiple recycle streams can prove quite difficult. Here we present and discuss a method that has proven useful in analysis of numerous grinding circuit flowsheets of varying-degrees of complexity our technique requires only a consistent process flowsheet with appropriate associated data and arbitrary numbering of streams and equipments. Process topology and user data are decoded to yield a set of "search" or base variables and a set of "calculated" variables in solids, water, particle size and splitter parameter space. This procedure greatly speeds subsequent actual mass balance adjustment calculations since perturing certain variables (e.g., a solids value) does not require recalculation of other variables (e.g., the water balance). Finally, internal search and calculated variables are back converted to User units and used in a Sum-of-Squares criterion. Global minimization of this performance functional then yields a consistent mass balance in a least, squares sense. Weighting factors of choice can be used. Examples illustrate application of these methods.

Twenty years of research into the design of permanent gateroad support (packs) in coal mines have resulted in two methods of pack design based on engineering principles. The first, the detached block concept, is based on static loading of the support system by an hypothetical detached block. The second, the roof beam tilt concept, is based on the dynamic loading of the support system as the roof beam tilts over the roadway about a pivot point located in the rib-side. The roof beam tilt concept has been used on a number of occasions to design packs in a variety of conditions. However, recent work in the Sydney Coalfield of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, has shown that design criteria based on the roof beam tilt concept in its present state of development are far from universal in application. After a review of published pack performance data, including detailed studies conducted in the UK, France and Canada, it was found that consideration of the mechanical properties of the roof beam produced a design criterion that fitted the available data. Modifications to the design process using the roof beam tilt concept are suggested for use in pack design. The work also revealed that current research in other aspects of coal mine ground control, particularly the areas of powered support design and subsidence prediction, may provide valuable information leading to major advances in this field. Such developments could also extend the application of the roof beam tilt concept to the design of pillar systems.

THE Exshaw formation is a thin but very persistent black shale unit generally well exposed along the easterly scarp faces of the fault blocks comprising tl1e front ranges of the Rocky mountains. It is over lain by the Mississippian Banff shales and silty shales and underlain by the massive Palliser Limestone formation of late Devonian age. The Exshaw continues eastward under the plains of Alberta and on into Saskatchewan, with little change until it reaches the surface of the Palaeozoic-Mesozoic unconformity. During the summer of 1953, the writer was working- with a field party under Dr. J. L. Usher in the front ranges of the Alberta Rocky mountains. This party, sent out by the Mobiloil Company, conducted a geological survey of Devonian rocks between the towns of Banff and Jasper. The writer helped to describe and map these Devonian rocks and obtained first-hand information concerning the Exshaw shale and its relationship to the underlying and overlying sediments. Additional information was obtained from reference material and from a number of geologists whom the writer has consulted. Grateful acknowledgment is offered to them, to the Mobiloil Company for releasing field information, and to F. W. Beales and W. P. Hancock who helped edit the original paper for publication. Information from areas north and smith of that studied and from bore holes on the prairies is referred to. Localities mentioned may be found in Figure 1.

Extraction under very mild conditions - a few minutes at room temperature with poor solvents - yields results characteristic of surface properties for a variety of coals. Such superficial extractions preferentially remove long-chain aliphatic compounds. As coal becomes more oxidized, less of these yellow- colored compounds is extracted, forming the basis for a simple colorimetric test for coal surface quality. The fact that these aliphatic compounds are responsible for surface hydrophobicity is supported by good correlation between extraction results and floatability, which decreases with decreasing extractability. This extraction test is very sensitive to oxi dationb even the effect of heating for an hour at 100 C can be detected. A second extraction test using mild alkali conditions has shown good correlation with plant dewatering Operations.

A study was made of the effect of permeable and impermeable lenses in a reservoir on the production capacity of a well. Both steady-state and unsteady-state data were obtained. An electrical resistivity model was used to obtain the steady-state data and thermal models. were constructed to obtain the unsteady-state data. The productivity of a well is affected very greatly only when the lenses are close to the well. The effect of circular lenses on the productivity ratio can be correlated with the distance from the center of the lens to the center of the well divided by the radius of the lens. When this dimensionless distance is equal to six or greater, the effect of the lenses on production capacity will be negligible. The pseudo steady-state productivity of a heterogeneous reservoir can be predicted using steady-state data. INTRODUCTION Many analytical solutions of reservoir behavior assume that reservoir rock is uniform and homogeneous. Although this assumption is used, all of the data from core analyses and well logging indicate that the reservoirs are heterogeneous. Very little work has been done on the performance of heterogeneous reservoirs. The work of Landrum,l et al. showed that transient phenomena in oil reservoirs could be studied with thermal models. Pickering and Cotman2 used thermal models to study flow in stratified reservoirs and investigated the effect of inhomo-geneities in oil reservoirs on transient flow performance. Loucks3 made a mathematical study of the pressure build-up in a system composed of two concentric regions of different permeability. Root, Silberberg and Pirson4 studied the effect of the growth of the flooded region on water influx predictions using a thermal model consisting of three concentric cylindrical regions of different thermal properties which simulated the aquifer, the flooded region and the unflooded portion of the original hydrocarbon region. Tomme, et a1.5 made a mathematical study of vertical fractures. The object of this investigation was to study the effect of highly permeable and impermeable lenses in the vicinity of the wellbore on the pressure depletion history of the well. Steady-state data were obtained for both conductive and nonconductive lenses that completely penetrated the formation. The lenses were symmetrically located at various distances from the wellbore. The unsteady-state data were obtained on seven thermal models. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE STEADY-STATE DATA The steady-state data were obtained from an electrical resistivity model 30 in. in diameter and approximately 11/2 in. deep. The outside of the model was lined with a 30-in. diameter copper strip, which served as the outer boundary of the reservoir. The bottom was covered with a sheet of plexiglass so that it would be nonconductive. The model was filled with a slightly saline solution. The well size was varied from an 0.064-in. diameter copper wire to a 10-in. diameter copper cylinder. Readings were taken with an impedance bridge using AC current to prevent polarization at the contacts. Copper and wax lenses were used to represent infinitely conductive and nonconductive lenses, respectively. The resistance was first measured for each well diameter with no lenses in the reservoir. Then the conductive and nonconductive lenses were spaced symmetrically at various distances from the well and the resistance read from each lens location. The diameters of the conductive lenses were 3, 1.022 and 0.624 in., and those of the nonconductive lenses were 3, 2.25 and 1.563 in. Development in the upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1944 resulted in the discovery of 19 new fields as compared with 11 during 1943. These discoveries include 10 oil fields, one dry gas field, and eight gas-condensate fields. Drilling During the year 590 wells were drilled as compared with 418 drilled during 1943. Of these operations, 485 wells were drilled in proven fields, with the following results: 281 oil wells, 22 condensate wells, one dry gas well and 141 dry holes. The remaining 105 wells were wildcats, of which 19 were producers. The geological distribution of these discoveries was as follows: In 1944, production amounted to 178,-522,630 bbl., which was an increase of some 31,670,384 bbl. over the 1943 figure of 136,852,246 bbl. These figures include both condensate and oil production, as separate figures are not available. Wildcatting in the area was more successful during 1944 than in 1943 as the following comparison of number of wells drilled illustrates: Discoveries during 1944 Smith Point, Chambers County.—Standard Oil Company of Texas completed its No. I State, sec. 109, on Feb. 15, 1944, in a Frio sand at 8135 to 8146 ft. The well flowed 250 bbl. of 42º gravity oil through an 1/8-in, choke. Gas-oil ratio was 800 to I; tubing pressure, 1100 bbl. Four other oil wells and one gas well were completed during the year. This discovery does not appear to be of major importance. The producing area lies on the upthrown side of a large fault. North Winnie, Chambers County.—Sun Oil Co. completed No. I P. E. Dougherty on Apr. 27, 1944, from the Frio, through perforations at 8757 to 8759 ft. The initial production was 154 bbl. of 38.3º gravity oil through an 1/8-in. choke. Gas-oil ratio Was 2526 to 1; tubillg Pressure, 2280 1b.; casing Pressure, 1225 lb.; total depth, 9519 ft. Three other wells were drilled during the Year. This discovery is on the downthrown side of the major Winnie Stowell fault, and increases in magnitude the already large producing area along this fault. Mayes Field, Chambers County.—Humble Oil and Refining Company's No. I Mary Etta Mayes was completed on Dec. 24, 1944, in a Frio sand, at 8166 to 8169 ft. through 1/4-in. for 768 bbl. of 40.3º gravity

The pressure oxidation of pyrite is an important hydrometallurgical technology, especially in the total oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates (gold is locked in the pyrite structure preventing direct cyanide recovery). It has been noticed in some commercial applications and benchscale studies that the leaching of pyrite may be slow and apparently can be inhibited by the presence of molten elemental sulfur in the leach pulp. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Ortho-Phenylene-Diamine (OPD) could be used as a surfactant or dispersant for sulfur in the pressure oxidation of pyrite. OPD has previously been shown to be useful for pressure leaching of zinc and copper sulfides at 150 C.In this work, the interfacial chemistry of sulfur was studied at temperatures of up to 190 C in the presence and absence of OPD and other surfactants. The contact angle between molten sulfur and pyrite was also measured. Finally, the impact of OPD on the kinetics of pyrite oxidation was measured in bench-scale pressure oxidation experiments. The essential finding of this study was that OPD lowers the interfacial tension between molten sulfur and acid solutions and increases the contact angle (reduces wetting) between molten sulfur and pyrite. The work of adhesion between sulfur and pyrite was reduced by more than an order of magnitude in the presence of OPD. In bench scale tests, addition of OPD was found to significantly accelerate the rate of oxidation of pyrite. Conveniently, it was found that OPD was also fully degraded during high temperature oxidation processes. No residual OPD was detected in solution or solid samples from the leach testing. OPD is recommended as a sulfur dispersant in the pressure oxidation of pyrite and/or elemental sulfur containing feeds.

Dynamic hydrothermal modeling is a tool that can aid in studying problems associated with hydrothermal ore deposits and can help increase our understanding of the spatial distribution of ore within hydrothermal systems. Models are constructed by a sequence of steps involving development of a conceptual model, followed by its mathematical description in terms of governing equation with accompanying initial and boundary conditions. This equation is then solved either analytically or numerically. The four model types ò that fully describe a hydrothermal 'system are those for fluid flow, heat and ore solute transport, and deformation. At Renison, models have been used to help understand two major exploration problems. These are the controls on ore localisation in dolomite horizons and feeder faults respectively. The types of models used ò have simulated the distribution of all mineral zones, pyrrhotite, and temperature in the dolomites. This has allowed evaluation of the effects on ore localisation by physical and chemical heterogeneities within the dolomite host rocks, and allowed estimation of potential controls in different physical and chemical environments.

A medição online de umidade de finos de minério de ferro sempre foi uma informação muito desejada nas plantas de pelotização de minério de ferro. Controlar a umidade do pellet feed produzido pela unidade de filtragem além de possibilitar maximizar a produção deste setor da planta garante uma maior estabilidade no processo de pelotamento e de endurecimento. Para conseguir entregar esta medição à sala de controle, iniciamos um projeto utilizando a metodologia Design For Six Sigma para desenvolver uma forma de medição desta grandeza. Inicialmente foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o assunto. Posteriormente, foram realizadas visitas técnicas que eliminaram algumas possíveis tecnologias de medição. Finalmente, foram avaliadas as tecnologias de Absorção de RF e medição por um braço robótico para serem avaliadas. O primeiro teste industrial foi realizado com um medidor de absorção de RF que não apresentou bons resultados. A faixa de interesse de medição é muito estreita (9% a 11% de umidade). Esse fato exige uma boa precisão do equipamento para que a medida tomada do processo seja útil e sua incerteza não ocupe toda a faixa. Como nenhuma das tecnologias de medição online existentes no mercado se mostrou precisa suficiente para a aplicação, a alternativa foi utilizar um braço robótico para coletar, secar e medir a umidade através do método tradicional feito por um robô. Esta última alternativa se mostrou robusta e adequada ao controle de processo da unidade de filtragem, produzindo resultados confiáveis e precisos.
