Ground movement is normal in open cut mining operations, mainly caused by excavation response and blasting. Movement of the ground can be acceptable provided it is not unexpected and catastrophic. However, in steep mine walls and the very large open pits being developed today the consequence of slope collapse can be catastrophic. Such risks can be minimized at the planning stage by reducing slope angles, but this carries a very high cost. Also, instabilities which develop whilst mining can lead to ore reserves being quarantined, which represent a high cost to the mining operation. In spite of such safety measures, unexpected failures have occurred in the past. These issues motivated the development and production of the slope stability radar (SSR). There are currently over 80 GroundProbe SSR systems deployed in metalliferous and coal mines in 17 countries. The unexpected failure of rock walls at mining sites is a major cause of death and serious injury. Slope failure is also one of the major causes of economic and production losses. An unexpected wall failure can bury critical equipment. It also disrupts the mine plan. It is common to cease mining for several days or weeks following a wall collapse due to uncertainty over stability. Direct economic losses in remediation alone can easily exceed $1,000,000 per incident. The economic costs of injury or fatality are much higher including closure of mines during the incident investigation process. Massive wall failure can result in direct and indirect costs measured in millions of dollars. This paper will present some recent case studies of the SSR operation in open cut mines in North America, including Thompson Creek Mining Company (Idaho), Smoky Canyon Mine (Idaho), and a general case study on extreme cold weather use of the SSR.

A method for determining the disorientation between sub-grains that .share a common tilt or twist boundary from measurements on X-ray micrographs is described. The method may be applied to subgrains of almost any orientation having boundary angles in the range from about 1 min to 1 deg of arc. An adaption of the Berg-Barretl method has been made to allow calculation of small angles of about 1 min to 1 deg of arc: between adjacent subgrains from the relative displacement of their images on X-ray micrographs. schulz4 gave equations for determining subgrain disorientation where the axis of subgrain rotation and the reflecting crystal planes were parallel to the specimen surface. In our method, however, they need not be parallel and, indeed, may have va:rious orientations. His camera setup, involving a fine-focus X-ray tube for obtaining high resolution with continuous radiation, was different from the one used in the present investigation (a 1.2 x 1.2 mm effective source and characteristic radiation). The X-rays produced a slight magnification in the subgrain images in the Schulz method, but not in the present method. The commonly available type of X-ray tube used permitted relatively short exposure times with a fine-grained photographic plate, which could be magnified optically many times for the examination of small subgrains. The method is illustrated by results obtained on {110} tilt boundaries in a polygonized aluminum single crystal of 99.994 pct purity. The flat crystal was stretched 6 pct in tension and then heated at 500°C for a cumulative time of 5 hr. Earlier, cahn5 studied subgrains formed by polygonization in stretched and heated aluminum crystals. He observed kink bands to have well defined boundaries lying in (110) planes, at least in the early stages of deformation. Cahn found that the (110) tilt boundaries formed by polygonization were directly related to the lattice bending about the <211> axis which lay in the (111) slip plane perpendicular to the <110> slip direction. DESCRIPTION OF THE CAMERA Our camera was similar in detail to Honey-combe&apos;s.6 Unfiltered copper radiation was used at 35 kv, and 20 ma. With the particular specimen used here to illustrate the method, a 1.2 by 1.2 mm effective source and a distance of 780 mm from target to specimen were employed, giving a convergence of 5 min of arc in the primary beam. The distance was 9.5 mm from the specimen to film. The upper 1/2- by 1-in. portion of the front surface of the specimen was irradiated with the film in parallel position. Since the specimen had been inhomogeneously deformed, many regions were in a position to reflect characteristic radiation at the Bragg Angle. The coal procedures described in this paper address the problems building a body of coal data that is accurate, precise, readily available, and easy to manipulate. The system is a set of interactive computer procedures consisting of a) data gathering (core hole and geophysical logs, their location, elevation, etc.) and standardized computer printouts, b) the graphic outputs of coded logs (log strips-scale variable) wing on-line electrostatic plotter, c) determination of seam continuity via relative movements of the log strips on an interactive graphic display terminal, d) calculation of the seam parameters (minable seam thickness, volume of non-coal material in the seam, ash and sulfur content of the raw or prepared product, roof and floor characteristics and other attributes relevant to mining), e) posting of seam parameters wing on-line drum plotter controlled by a microprocessor on-line to the minicomputer (PDP- 11).

"The recrystallization behavior of Nb micro alloyed steels containing Cr, Mo, Ni and Ti. was studied using hot torsion testing with the aim of modeling the recrystallization processes and the mean flow stress taking into account the microstructural behavior during hot rolling. The kinetics of static and metadynamic recrystallization were characterized and appropriate expressions were formulated for the recrystallization kinetics. These are shown that the recrystallization kinetics depend on steel composition and the processing conditions. The stress-strain curves were determined in order to derive new equations for the peak stress, peak strain, mean flow stress and softening kinetics. The peak strain is influenced by the presence of alloying elements; their addition, which has a solute drag effect, retards the rate of grain boundary motion, shifting the peak to the right. The addition of Nb to the steel results in a significant increment in the activation energy for hot deformation, and Mo has smaller effect than Nb, but Cr has the opposite effect. It was also found that the deformation activation energy in these steels was not altered by the addition of Ni. The rate of metadynamic recrystallization increases with strain rate and temperature and is observed to be independent of strain, in contrast to the observations for static recrystallization.The mean flow stress (MFS) calculations, based on the Sims analysis, are then compared with the predictions of a model based on an improved Misaka mean flow stress equation in which solute effects, strain accumulation, as well as the kinetics of static and metadynamic recrystallization are accounted for. Good agreement between the measured mean flow stresses, which is obtained from the mill logs of POSCO Kwangyang #3 HSM (hot strip mill), and 'predicted ones is obtained over the whole range of rolling temperatures. The results demonstrate that dynamic recrystallization followed by metadynamic recrystallization, supported by the unexpected load drops, sometimes occurs for the rolling schedules studied in the present analysis."

Recent offshore diamond exploration has been concentrated in the SW Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. I`IW Australia. Extensive high resolution seismic and sampling surveys have been carried out in Cambridge Gulf, offshore of the mouth of the OR River and other rivers of the region. Surface-tow boomer surveys have been correlated with sampling data from vibracores and a wide diameter (1m) airlift system, providing a geological framework for the area. Although large-scale bulk sampling has not been undertaken, there has been no reported recovery of diamonds since 1993. The geology and prospectivity of a range of potential diamond traps in high energy, fluvial and transgressive depositional settings has been assessed. Potentially diamondiferous targets include (i) a shoreline apron. (ii) fluvial/estuarine channel infills and terraces and (iii) ravinement surfaces.. Although there is evidence for a long history of fluvial development and sea level changes, the majority of the investigated traps represent the result of erosion and sedimentation during and following the last interglacial. Significant volumes of unconsolidated gravels and coarse-grained sands with occasional indurated layers are present, and are locally exposed at sea beet In place s thick successions (>5m) of fine-grained overburden overlie the coarse-grained sediments.

THE Liberty Bell cyanide precipitate is unique in that it is apt to vary widely in composition in the course of very short, periods of time, and a method of refining and melting that would prove highly satisfactory at one cleanup would yield almost an hopeless "mess" it a second. Table I gives a general conception of the wide range in grade and composition of those raw precipitates. It is evident that no one standard flux could be expected to produce a high-grade bullion with such a widely variable precipitate, and that any method of treatment with acid requires most careful consideration. Refining by Acids Naturally, our first efforts to improve our precipitates were directed along the lines of acid treatment. Table II embodies the results of careful sampling and analysis of one cleanup at the time when wet refining reached its maximum development at this mill. We have now discarded all methods of wet refining, successfully replacing them by amore scientific method of flux calculation described herein, but it is believed that a general description of this wet refining is warranted as it throws some interesting side lights on acid refining in general.

Methods are presented for measuring and comparing "degree" of water drive, and for observing the control that rate of withdrawal exerts over decline of reservoir pressure. Degree of water drive is studied from pressure-production curves of 10 reservoirs; the method used to present these comparatively is to convert cumulative oil production from barrels to percentage of ultimate. Degree of water drive is also represented by a "water-encroachment factor," representing barrels of water influx per pound-month per acre-foot of oil reservoir. Pressure-production curves for the water-drive reservoirs after a period of declining pressure show a diminishing angle of slope, in some cases to the point where pressure ceases to decline or where it even increases; the shapes of these curves are in marked contrast to the dissolved-gas type of curve, which shows a general trend toward zero pressure at ultimate oil recovery. Yearly rate of oil production in percentage of ultimate oil recovery is correlated with pressure decline. The correct rate of production of oil with its associated gas and water sustains pressure in reservoirs having a high water-encroachment factor. For reservoirs having a low water-encroachment factor, it is necessary to inject the produced water and even inject large volumes of water from an outside source. The discussion of the actual reservoirs is preceded by a general review and is followed by a substantial bibliography. It is now generally accepted that water drive is capable of yielding 60 to 80 per cent of the original oil in place in most reservoirs, as compared with 20 to 40 per cent for dissolved-gas drive. There is no need to question the importance of controlling a reservoir in order to take advantage of such an efficient mechanism. What is a water-drive reservoir? Oil reservoirs usually combine two or more of the four basic mechanisms: dissolved-gas drive, gas-cap drive, water drive, gravity drainage. A water-drive reservoir is one in which water advances to take the place of the oil and gas produced. When the oil withdrawal rate is sufficiently low, the water will tend to maintain pressure. The maximum effectiveness is attained when the water follows the oil withdrawal so closely that little or no decline in pressure occurs. Oil in its underground reservoir is associated with water. This water is significant in the production of the oil according to the source of supply and the permeability of the surrounding formation. As oil is produced and the pressure is lowered, water can move in to replace the oil. With adequate supply and sufficient permeability, actual movement takes place on an extensive scale. The first movement of water takes place by expansion of the water and its associated fluids. While this expansion is of little importance in some fields, in others it is sufficient to supply all of the energy required for the production of oil. Indonesia is a developing country in Southeast Asia with a population of some 180 million people. It has a stable political environment and currently enjoys high rates of economic growth. Indonesia has abundant reserves of natural resources, ample for its own needs and for export. Energy resources include oil, gas and coal. The oil and gas industries are well established domestically and for export. In the last few years, though, coal industry development has been rapid. Coal resources from bituminous to lignite amount to more than 30 Gt (33 billion st). That is more than enough to meet domestic needs and provide significant amounts for export. Figure 1 shows coal basins in Indonesia. Coals in Indonesia are generally young steaming coals. They are very low ash and sulfur, high volatile, bituminous B and C. The Indonesian government&apos;s state coal company is called Perum Tambang Batubara. The company has actively promoted the development of its coal for domestic and export markets. In particular, the government has placed priority on non-oil exports of which coal is a major element. The government strives to honor all contractural commitments for the export of Indonesian coal from contractor, private and government mines. From 1987 through 1989, coal production has increased from about 3 Mt (3.3 million st) to 9 Mt (9.9 million st). Exports have grown from I Mt (1.1 million st) to 3 Mt (3.3 million st). These are significant increases for a small industry with limited infrastructure. But with growing investment and development, these production and export levels will increase substantially, and Indonesia will be a significant world supplier of coal in the 1990s.

In 1993 a detailed review of drill sample yuuluy was rouxluard through twin and triplet drill holes using open hole, crossover suhreverse circulation (RC) and diamond drill methods. Advances in face-sampling RC methods demanded a further review of the validity and reproducibility of drill sample data. A program was undertaken to drill three RC holes using the latest technology (new face- sampling bits, dust suppressers, cyclones and compressors). Volumetric and mass studies were undertaken to review sample recoveries. Modal analyses on indicator minerals were logged to interpret the relative degree of mineralisation. Ambiguities in the results were immediately apparent and the consensus was for follow-up twin diamond holes using HQ3 coring tubes. The most mineralised RC hole was selected for the first twin diamond hole. This RC hole (MS 313) encountered one intersection of >0.47 g/t; in contrast the diamond hole (MS 342) had nine intersections at > I g/t. Results at hand show definitively that face-sampling RC drilling is not acceptable as a method of exploration for gold deposits of the Woods Point type. Furthermore it is demonstrated that RC drilling should not be used for any type of exploration of high-grade gold vein deposits related to highly fractured or porous hostrock, or areas of previous mining activity. Methods are proposed for reviewing of rates of sample recovery, distribution and cross-contamination. Comparisons also show that in limited metreage reconnaissance drill programs, diamond drilling is more similar to percussion in per metre costs, than it is credited with, and always provides more bang for the Buck.

The No. 4 I.S.F. Smelter Complex at the Avonmouth Works of Imperial Smelting Corporation (N.S.C.) Limited commenced operation at the beginning of 1968. The furnace rating is 120,000 tons zinc and 40,000 tons lead per annum. Zinc and lead concentrates are unloaded onto a 1,000 tons per hour capacity conveyor belt and automatically weighed and sampled before receipt into a 48,000 ton capacity raw material store. Distribution is by a reversible boom stacker into 16 x 3,000 ton bays and recovery is by a front end loader. Materials are fed to 16 proportioning bins for feeding via continuous weigh feeders to a 132 square metre effective updraught area sinter machine with a material flow rate of 240 tons per hour over the machine. The required quantity of output lump sinter at up to 800ºC is fed to 2 x 600 ton storage bins on the I.S.F. plant. By-product SO2 rich gas is fed to a conventional wet gas single stream acid plant rated at 600 tons per day utilizing a dry N.T.P. gas volume of 100,000 cubic metres per hour. The hot sinter and preheated coke (800ºC) are automatically neighed and charged to a 27.3m2 shaft area I.S.F. fitted with 2 x 5.5 m. wide lead splash condensers. Grade 4 zinc is tapped and transferred to the zinc refinery. Conventional type lead bullion and slag are tapped from the bottom of the furnace through a separation forehearth. The refinery consists of 6 lead and 3 cadmium columns to produce some 52,000 tons per annum of S.H.G. metal. S.H.G. metal and Grade 4 metal is cast into various shapes as required.

"A set of Al-Co binary alloys (with respectively in weight percent 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% Co) have been studied by X-ray diffraction at the as compacted state. The structural evolution according to cobalt addition shows special features as the apparition of fcc cobalt and hcp cobalt beside aluminium in some cobalt compositions of the Al-Co mixtures using only cold compaction without sintering at high temperature. Figure 1 Cobalt is not a common alloying element in aluminium because its solubility is very low [1]. According to the pressure-temperature phase diagram, Co is known to exist in two allotropic forms: a low-temperature hcp phase and a high-temperature fcc phase [2-3]. At room temperature, Co is stable in the hcp form but it transforms to the fcc form when it is heated to above the transition temperature 695K. Powder aluminium and cobalt (99.999 %) were used in the proportions defined according to the required compositions. The total mass of the samples to be elaborated was between 8 g and 10 g. Cold compaction of mixed powder (Al-Co) under an uniaxial load of 10 MPa has been achieved to obtain a dense product (60%)."

THE dendritic pattern of steels shown by deep etching is used exten-sively as a guide in the inspection and control of the great majority of steels used in ordnance construction and for many applications in indus-try. The value of macroexamination lies in the fact that it enables a qualified observer to make deductions concerning the general quality of relatively large pieces of metal. Not the least of these general character-istics is the nature and extent of the dendritic segregation in the steel, either in the cast condition or after mechanical or thermal treatments. PREVIOUS WORK Detailed methods for macroetching were outlined by Yatsevitch1 and have been standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. A comprehensive study of the occurrence, origin, and the chemical and crystalline nature of the dendritic structure was given by Keshian.2 The marked persistence of dendritic segregation in nickel steels is fully recognized and has been discussed by Sauveur and Reed&apos; and by others. Very little, however, has been written on the effect of the various elements on the macrostructure of steels, and the purpose of this report is to submit evidence concerning the influence of chromium, nickel and molybdenum on the macrostructure of some 4 by 4-in. ingots cast and treated under closely controlled conditions.

When operations begin early next year at the $100-million Port Kembla coal loading facility in New South Wales, Australia, a sophisticated computer system, directed by two of Hewlett-Packard&apos;s HP1000 mini-computers, will perform a number of functions ranging from monitoring and reporting arrivals and departures to maintaining a library of events for up to one year. The three-processor HP1000 system configuration, valued at $215,000, is one of the largest single orders, in terms of dollar value, ever submitted in Australia for Hewlett-Packard&apos;s line of engineering and manufacturing minicomputers. The processors will be linked in a fully "backed-up&apos;&apos; configuration using Hewlett-Packard&apos;s fourth generation distributed networking system, DS/1000-IV, making the system one of the most sophisticated in Australia. Interfaced to a number of weightometers and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), the computers will be the heart of a coal inventory system for the facility which, in its first phase, will be capable of handling more than 13.5 Mt/a of coal. The computers will report on all plant functions, including conveyor belt and water spray operations. Specifically, the system will: • Monitor and report all coal movements related to road and rail deliveries, dispatches from ship loaders, and interstockpile transfers. •Maintain a &apos;&apos;running log" of all events pertaining to overall plant operations, such as conveyor starts and stops and anti-pollution spray activation. • Accept and maintain plant data entered manually or acquired automatically from various remote locations via either visual display units (VDUs) or PLCs. • Maintain complete historical records of all transactions and related plant events for up to one year. • Provide a facility for stockpile management, modeling-type programs, and training or other simulation activity. The facility was designed with the following characteristics in mind, based on an analysis of requirements for an automated coal loading operation that would optimize productivity and be flexible to change and grow with facility needs and changing technology: • Continuous Operations-Due to the need for continuous plant logging and control, the overall facility will be capable of uninterrupted, 24¬hour operation. • Handling Current and Projected Workloads-The facility will be capable of not only handling current workloads, but also any additional workloads required during future coal loading operations. • Expansion-The facility will be capable of expansion, for a minimum cost, at any time with minimum disruption in operations. • Single Source of Supply and Maintenance-The facility will be supplied and maintained by one supplier, through hardware and software maintenance support contracts. System Configuration Two HP1000 minicomputers, each with 500K bytes of main memory, will be front-ended by a pre-processor with 256K bytes of main memory. These three systems, active, backup, and front-end, will be interconnected into a triangular array, as shown in the accompanying diagram. Under normal conditions, the front-end will transmit plant status data to one of the main systems, whose primary function will be to monitor coal flow and maintain a relevant dialogue with operators. The front-end, therefore, handles all communication with the plant PLCs, effectively removing this overhead from the current plant monitor (either of the two main systems). The front-end pre-processes and post-processes all information flowing from the plant monitor to the PLCs and vice versa, thus effectively handling all communication between the two units. A second main system will handle reporting, administrative, and modeling functions, and will also be capable of performing both front-end and monitoring operations. Linking all

An investigation into the performance of support systems that are currently used in South African coal mines was conducted. Five most critical components of a support system have been identified. These components are resin, bolt, hole, machinery/equipment and the rock type. All five of these components are equally important as failure in any of these components will result in an inadequate support system. The performance of resin used in South Africa was investigated through in situ short encapsulated pull tests. The results indicated that in the majority of pull tests, failure took place at the rock-resin interface, indicating that the rock failed before the resin shear strength had been reached. It is therefore concluded that the strength of resin currently used in South Africa is adequate. It is found that although the maximum bond strengths achieved form both resin suppliers were similar, there was a considerable difference in the stiffhess of the resins. Roof bolt diameters and rib heights of bolts from three major manufacturers were evaluated (approximately 80 roof bolts from each manufacturer). The results showed there is a significant variation in bolt diameters and rib heights in the same batch in roof bolts supplied by certain manufacturers. The results also showed that on average there are insignificant differences between the parameters that determine the bolt profile (rib angle, spacing between the ribs and rib thickness). The influence of these parameters on bolt performance was very small and could not be established in situ. Roof bolts from four major suppliers were also evaluated through in situ short encapsulated pull tests. The results showed that the reinforcing system using roof bolts from all four manufacturers performed almost identically in sandstone, but somewhat differently in other rock types. The effect of bit types was evaluated. Both the stresses and the maximum loads obtained from the two-prong bits were greater than those obtained from a spade bit. Borehole annulus was found to be another important parameter that determined the support performance, and was investigated. The results from these tests showed that an annulus between 2.8 mm 4.5 mm resulted in the highest bond strengths. The results also showed that as the annulus drops below 2 mm, it appears to have a negative effect on the bond strength. The effect of wet and dry drilling on support performance was investigated. The results showed that wet drilling can-provide relatively greater system stiffnesses and slightly greater bond strengths. Short encapsulated pull test results showed very distinct differences between bolt system performance in different rock types and that sandstone produces significantly better results than shale and coal. From the results it is concluded that rock type is probably the primary factor influencing support system performance. A detailed investigation into the specifications of roofbolters that are currently being used indicated that the quality of installation of a support system is directly related to the performance of the equipment that is used to install the bolts. The important parameters, torque, thrust and speed of bolting equipment were investigated. The results showed that there are significant variations in these parameters in South African roofbolters.

Abstract -Estimating ore reserves for vein type deposits is a two-stage procedure: first, calculate the geometry of the vein system, and second, estimate the grades within this system. The grade estimation can only be consistently performed if the vein geometry - its size, shape and orientation - has been correctly characterized. Getting the size and shape of the different veins right means that the ore tonnages will not be artificially inflated, e.g., by falsely classifying host rock as veins. Similarly, correctly estimating their orientation and location helps mine management decide on the appropriate mining technique, selective or not. When applying geostatistics to estimate the vein geometry all available information needs to be used and not just the standard lithologic indicator of being or not being in a vein.

This paper presents preliminary results of a US Bureau of Mines (USBM) study of potential costs of compliance with possible federal regulations for copper heap and dump leaching. The regulations could arise under amendments to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and/or the General Mining Law. Estimates are given for the cost of compliance with possible technology standards that would require the use of liners and closure caps regardless of terrain and underlying geology and hydrology. This cost is compared to the cost of compliance with 1992 state requirements for terrains typical of those found at existing copper leach sites in the southwestern United States. Incremental compliance costs are found to widely exceed screening criteria used by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to denote significant economic impact.
