In August 1965, the late Mr Alan Smith, then Mill Superintendent at Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (GMK), Australia, asked me to investigate the planting of vegetation on the GMK slimes dams in order to ease the dust problem in urban and industrial areas-a problem that is caused largely by dust from these barren slimes dams. My early sources of information were the comprehensive papers in various issues of the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, the climate of Johannesburg differs from that of Kalgoorlie. The average Johannesburg rainfall, which falls mostly in summer, is 730 mm, and the average maximum summer temperature is 26°C (top 34°C). The winters are cool, the average maximum being 18°C (low -7°C). Kalgoorlie, on the other hand, receives, on average, 257 mm of sporadic rainfall, has hot dry summers with an average maximum of 35°C (top 45°C), and cool winters with an average maximum of 18°C (low -2°C). My obvious choice was to look at established trees growing on the GMK lease. A number of Athel pines were growing vigorously adjacent to the Oroya mining and geology offices and also on a nearby sand dump. The Athel pine (Tamarix aphylla), which is native to North Africa, Asia, and India, was originally introduced into Australia in 1936 by Mr Essington Lewis, then manager of BHP. His cuttings were planted in Whyalla, where some difficulty had been experienced in finding trees and shrubs that would flourish despite the district's low rainfall. In August 1965, cuttings of approximately 20 cm length and 1 cm diameter were taken from the GMK trees, stripped of leaves, and placed in jars of water in the sun. When the cuttings had sprouted both leaves and roots, they were planted in local soil in tins (about 20 cm high and 10 cm in diameter), and watered daily. In October 1965, when the new shoots were about 8 cm long, the trees were transplanted onto a lower flat section¬approximately 30 m wide, 30 m long, and 2 m high-of the Trafalgar slimes dam. No additional soil or fertilizer was used, and the trees were planted in their tins, the bases of which had been removed (the tin would eventually rust away). A few common varieties of non-prickly cactus and two native salt bush (spp Atriplex) were also planted, but did not survive, probably because of the acidity of the slime. During the summer of 1965/1966, Kalgoorlie's rainfall was 88 per cent above the average, and this probably helped the trees to survive. The moisture content was usually about 2,5 per cent from about 10 cm below the surface, and the pH value of the slime (d80 approximately 75 µm) was about 6. The trees were watered twice a week for the first four months and then left untended. By 1974 they had grown to only about 0,7 m, which indicated that their growth in slime was very slow. Other Athel pines were planted on the wall of the dam, but did not survive beyond 1974, probably because of the steep (about 500) slope and the hardness of the walls, which were initially formed by hand-shovelling of the slime as the height of the dam was raised. Five of the six Athel pines planted in 1965, which probably reached maturity (approximately 5 m in height) in 1981-16 years after being planted-have survived. In the early 1980s, waste rock had to be dumped on the dam, but the management of KMA (now KCGM) took care to ensure that the trees were not buried. Trials are being conducted on other tailings dams so that the performance of cuttings taken from the trees on Trafalgar dam can be compared with that of cuttings taken at various sites in Western Australia. It might also be worth while for an attempt to be made to strike cuttings from Trafalgar dam in pots containing different mixtures of soil and slime.

An explosion in an underground coal mine can have a devastating effect on the main fans used to provide mechanical ventilation. The Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 75.310 (CFR, 1992), specifies that each main mine fan shall be offset by at least 15 feet (4.6 m) from the nearest side of the mine opening unless an alternative method of protecting the fan is approved in the ventilation plan. Also, each main mine fan shall be protected by one or more weak walls or explosion doors. This paper presents venting and fan configuration designs which provide a comparable degree of safety for explosion protection. Design flexibility is enhanced and a means for consistency in safety judgements is afforded.

Interpretation of presently available geological information indicates that most of the periods of significant metal deposition in the Washington Cascades Range are, at least in part, genetically related to late Cretaceous -Tertiary intrusive episodes. Chemically, the most favorable environment for base metal deposition is high in potassium. Characterizing the advanced stages of these chemical alteration conditions are the silicate mineral assemblages orthoclase and/or secondary biotite. Wall rock alteration includes both deuteric and hydrothermal processes, the intensity of which primarily depends upon the degree of fracturing in the country rock prior to the introduction of secondary material. Broadly speaking, the primary physical controls for the distribution and concentration of sulfides appear to be a series of structural couples involving both northwest (paralleling regional trends) and northeast--striking systems. Meaningful base metal exploration in the Washington Cascades demands a basic understanding of the various geologic factors related to the distribution of the sulfide deposits. Any geologist contemplating Cascade work should be well grounded in the fundamental concepts of petrology and structure.as these constitute two of his most beneficial aids. The acquisition of the detailed data necessary for this understanding may seem a bit academic, yet it has been demonstrated in numerous instances that a fair economic appraisal of a particular property or mining district depends primarily upon the ability of the geologist to recognize the subtle environmental differences which could lead to the discovery of a major ore deposit.

Discussion of the paper of BENJAMIN F. TILLSON, presented at the NEW York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 505 to 528. T. E. STURTEVANT, * New York, N. Y.-Mr. Tillson's paper on hammer drills is of much interest to me. Early in 1909 I was invited to make tests of our drills at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. The first drill that we tested gave very poor results. This was a drill having a hammer piston 1¾ in. in diameter and 3 ¼ -in. stroke, the hammer piston weighing about 6 1b., the 1 ¾ in. diameter being exposed to pressure at either end. Although this drill has given excellent results as a sinking drill, its performance as a stoping drill was poor. This was one of the surprises of the limestone as spoken of by Mr. Tillson. This led me to further investigation, and a second drill was developed, with a much lighter piston and a somewhat longer stroke, that gave better results. In the design of this drill, no attention was paid to the cost of construction, our whole attention being given to the increase in drilling speed and reduction of the quantity of air used. The first drill of this type had a piston weighing about 2 ½ lb. and a stroke of 3 ¼ in. The piston was made with a hammer-bar extension, and the cylinder was made with two diameters of the bore, one in which the hammer-bar extension moved and the larger one in which the piston head moved. THE iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 4.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. 1). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a maximum strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb. per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2.5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent;, a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated. Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to 4.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction.

It is possible to selectively mine an orebody by combining the use of the SSW probe with any bulk mining methods as well as narrow vein exploitations. In other words, thanks to the use of the SSW probe, mining operators will be able to reduce and control dilution that is generally associated to every mining operation. Already, quick and substantial savings have been obtained. Falconbridge mines have demonstrated in Sudbury and Raglan operations, that the SSW probe can log nickel, copper and iron sulphides in blast holes. They have raised the grade and reduced dilution by outlining the limits of the ore zones before selectively loading explosives in the blast holes. By lowering the probe in a blast hole, a profile of the ore content is instantly measured and recorded. Logging cored diamond drill holes at the mine have demonstrated that the ore content (nickel, copper, cobalt, PGM) as assayed is proportional to the intensity of the probe?s electromagnetic response (EM), probably because the nickel / pyrrhotite ratio is uniform within a given orebody. The probe also measures the intrinsic conductivity of the sulphides and the percentage of magnetite. All probe readings are displayed and automatically stored at a 10-cm interval within the same reading unit. A 30-meter blast hole takes less than 2 minutes to survey. The whole instrument is light (12 kg) and very simple to use. One operator can carry the SSW system and survey either down or up-holes. The probe works from ?40°C to +50°C. Plotting the measurements of the SSW probe in blast holes (2-3-4-6-10 inches in diameter) before blasting allows to determine the exact shape of the orebody within the waste rock and uneconomic low-grade ore. Thus, only the portion of the holes that contains ore is blasted. The dilution is then much reduced and, by leaving the waste and low-grade ore in place, the mine saves on transportation, blasting, crushing, backfilling, milling, etc. Thousands of dollars are thus saved. Some savings may also be achieved during the development of stopes by guiding development drifts and by replacing diamond drilling by percussion drilling. In some circumstances, when the probe shows that some of the rich ore was not drilled-off, additional blast holes will allow to recover pockets of rich ore that otherwise would have been abandoned in the walls of a stope.

Due to environmental limitations and the scarcity of freshwater, flotation using seawater or desalinated seawater as process water becomes more common for mining operations. On the other hand, seawater has been reported to affect the flotation behavior of sulfide minerals. Few reports are available on influence of pyrite depression, recycled seawater and lime consumption on flotation by using seawater. In this study, the flotation tests were performed using ore sample to investigate the effect of pH with seawater and process water used in plant on the flotation behavior in a laboratory-scale flotation cell and a pilot plant-scale. The results of laboratory scale flotation indicated that copper and molybdenum flotation kinetics decreased with increasing pH. Furthermore, the iron (mainly pyrite) recovery decreased with increasing pH. The pilot plant-scale flotation test showed that water with a higher concentration of magnesium and calcium (plant processes water) consumed a higher amount of lime. Because of low lime consumption and high copper and molybdenum recovery and grade, pH 8 is suitable compared with pH 8.5 for flotation. Geotechnical solutions were developed for closure of two historic, remote underground mines in the deserts of southern California. Closure criteria included access closure, minimal site impact, and optimum use of native materials. The closure designs and construction activities incorporated techniques for protecting sensitive biota, particularly bats and desert tortoise. The types of mine openings that were closed include adits, declines, shafts, daylighted stopes, and dugout dwellings. The desert locations permitted implementation of cost-effective closure techniques that relied upon the use of native materials. The strategies and techniques developed for these desert closures are adaptable to other climates.

This paper summarizes the cause and effect of induced voltages in multiple conductor cables supplying alternating current power to equipment in under- ground coal mines. The investigation of this phenomenon revealed that the electrical energy produced by the resultant electric arcing between the frames of mobile electric face equipment was of a sufficient magnitude to ignite explosive methane-air mixtures. The results of laboratory tests and field tests made between equipment frames during actual operation in numerous coal mines are discussed. Several methods of eliminating or suppressing the induced voltages to nonincendive levels are also described. It is the purpose of this paper to convey to the mining industry a knowledge of this problem and to recommend methods of eliminating or reducing these induced voltages or arcing currents to safe levels.

The necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of a multicomponent phase with respect to infinitesinzal fluctuations are derived and transformed to be written in terms of activity coeffcients and mole fractions rather than in terms of the customary second deritlatives of the free energy. NECESSARY conditions for the stability of a multi-component system were derived by Gibbs as early as 1876.' However, as the usefulness of these conditions is greatly enhanced by the simplicity of their translation in terms of functions of common usage, the present contribution establishes these conditions in terms of activities or activity coefficients-and mole fractions. It was shown in another article2 that not only may these conditions be used for the prediction of the appearance of new phases, but they may also provide a check on the orders of magnitude of the interaction coefficients involved. "Spinodal" decomposition is said to occur when, at constant temperature and pressure, the system is unstable with respect to infinitesimal fluctuations in composition. As a result, the "phases" which appear may be attained through continuous changes in the system rather than discontinuous ones, and, consequently, the free energy of these phases may be described by a unique continuous free-energy function. For a binary system, the familiar curve of Fig. 1 illustrates the case we wish to extend to a multicom-ponent system. The conditions to be written pertain to the decomposition of a system of n moles into moles of phase moles of phase v, ...hen moles of phase 9, where the phases a, ...v, ...9 are—at least initially-arbitrarily close in composition to that of the original phase. "A gravity concentration process has been applied to ores from the Clogau Mine, north Wales, the Tyndrum deposit, central Scotland and an alluvial ore from Leadhills area of Scotland. In the case of the Welsh ore and the alluvial deposit the gold grains in the concentrate and tailings streams have been characterised in terms of their three dimensions.In the case of Welsh ore, the thickness of a gold grain has been shown to be the single most important factor in determining behaviour in a gravity concentration operation. Six indices were used to quantify the overall geometry of the gold grains and those which incorporate a thickness term have proven to be effective in predicting the destination of gold particles within the concentration circuit. It is proposed that the most simple of these, the Heywoods flakiness ratio, has potential for the control of milling operations as an alternative to the established practice of characterising the size of the mill discharge.The effect of grain geometry on the recovery of fine gold has been studied using Tyndrum ore. The recovery of gold by gravity concentration increased from 20% to 70% when the criteria used to design the milling operation was the prevention of over grinding of gold grains.The destination of alluvial grains in the concentration circuit did not show such dependence on shape, and this has been attributed to the effective classification of all the gold grains in the sample by fluvial action producing a population of similar geometric characteristics."

INTRODUCTION General Quebec Cartier Mining Co. (QCM) , Canadian subsidiary of U . S. Steel Corporation, operates two iron ore concentrators at the North Shore of Quebec, Canada. In its own operation at Mount-Wright, over 45 million tons per year of crude ore are ground, fully autogenous in six 32' x 11-1/2 Dominion Engineering mills. At Fire Lake/Lac Jeannine operation, property of Sidbec Normines Incorporated (SNI), over 11 million tons per year of crude ore are now ground, fully autogenous, in twelve 18' x 5' Hardinge mills. The Lac Jeannine concentrator was originally constructed by Q.C.M. in 1960 and. was since operated, in beneficiating the Lac Jeannine ore deposit until fully depleted in 1977, at an annual capacity of 18 million tons of crude per year. In 1976, the new company, Sidbec Normines, was incorporated by Sidbec Corporation, British Steel Corporation and Quebec Cartier Mining Co., in proportional holding of approximately 51 to 41 to 8 percent respectively. Since the acquisition of the Fire Lake ore deposit and Jeannine concentrator by the new company, QCM has continued managing the mine and concentrator operaions for S idbec Normines Inc . Flow-Sheet Design Jeannine concentrator comprises twelve identical mill lines grinding the ROM from 8" top size to 14 mesh nominal size range. Driven by 600 H.P. motor at 13.4 RPM corresponding to 73% critical speed, each mill is operated in a closed circuit with two 5' x 12' vibrating screens dressed with 2.5 x 25 mm slot opening cloth. The ground product or screen undersize at an average grade of 33.4% Fe is beneficiated by gravity separation to produce 66.5% Fe concentrate grade at 42.7% weight recovery. At the rougher stage, each mill line con-tains 128 Humphrey 13- 1/2" pitch spirals which produce a final tailing, middling and concentrate products. The rougher concentrate - so produced - is classified by 64 Humphrey pocket sizers into an underflow, which is a final concentrate product and an overflow which is further upgraded by 64 cleaner spirals. The cleaner concentrate together with the pocket sizer 's underflow are dewatered on a 13'[6] horizontal filter. Seafloor polymetallic sulphides are distributed in the EEZ of Japan, including substantial deposits in the Okinawa Trough and Izu-Bonin back-arc basin. In this new frontier, the successful development of these resources in Japan is expected to bring about a new domestic supply of mineral resources. The initial stages of this development are authorized by the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy, approved by the Japanese Cabinet on April 26, 2013, and the Plan for the Development of Marine Energy and Mineral Resources, formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on December 24, 2013. In 2008, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), commissioned by METI, began a survey and technological development programme for the development of the seafloor polymetallc sulphides (PMS) based on these Plans. The examination of four different fields: the evaluation of the amount of the resource, environmental assessment, mining technology, and processing & smelting technology, are concurrently promoted, aiming for commercialization as soon as possible. Based on the results of research for properties of geomorphology and marine environments of the target test sites in the Okinawa trough, which have been ongoing for several years, the preparation of the pilot lifting test included an in-situ excavation and crushing test conducted using test excavating and crushing systems.

Computer modelling is being used to simulate rock fracture, caving and stress redistribution about longwall panels with increasing confidence. The models are being assessed against field monitoring and have significantly increased the understanding of caving mechanics within the overburden. This paper discusses the modelling approach and provides some examples of its application to overburden damage and induced hydraulic conductivity. Computer models used in this study simulate the fracture process in the geological units throughout the overburden. Analysis of the mining induced fracture patterns and in situ joint patterns allows an estimation of the hydraulic conductivity within the overburden. The cubic flow relationship has been used in the examples presented.

HE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given composition and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO). This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe2O3), and phosphorus oxide (P2O5) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted. WHEN work was begun in September, 1910, on the rock excavation for the foundation of the gigantic dam at Valhalla, N. Y., which is to convert Kensico lake into an important storage reservoir of the Catskill Aqueduct system, one of the first steps taken by the contractor, H. S. Kerbaugh, Inc., was the development of a quarry to supply the stone needed in the construction work.The importance of a bountiful supply of suitable rock in an accessible location is apparent when it is considered that nearly a million cubic yards of cyclopean masonry will be contained in the completed structure, not to mention dimension and facing stones, concrete blocks, and mass concrete. The dam structure will be over 1800 ft. long and about 170 ft. above the present river bed. However, for a distance of some 800 ft., it will be carried down to solid ledge rock, which will make the finished structure about 300 ft. in maximum height. It will be about 200 ft. thick at the base and directly beneath the coping it will be 28 ft. thick. This dam will raise the reservoir surface 110 ft. above old Kensico lake. The reservoir capacity will be 29,000,000,000 gal.-equal to New York's total needs for over two months. The contract price for this work is nearly $8,000,000 and is second only in amount to the cost, over $12,600,000, of the Ashokan Reservoir work. Fig. 1 is a view of the dam site.

Time and motion studies were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the hand and machine dismantling of scrapped auto starter motors, generators, and alternators for recovery of copper, aluminum, and iron. The studies showed that an individual with power handtools and convenient access to a hydraulic press, power bandsaw, acetylene torch, and power lathe could, in an 8-hour day, disassemble about 100 starters, or 150 generators, or 30 alternators. The scrap copper yield would be 280, 390, and 45 pounds, respectively, and the iron yield would be about seven times the copper weight. About 100 pounds of aluminum would be obtained from the alternators.

Hong Kong continues to display a remarkable enthusiasm for undertaking ambitious tunnelling schemes despite apparent recessions in the Asian economy. This paper provides an outline of tunnel projects currently under construction, those recently tendered and a glimpse of the extent of forthcoming projects which, according to Government sources, carry a price tag of HK$ 200B. Committed works will cost about HK$ 15B and involve a variety of TBM and drill and blast tunnels. These include the recently tendered works for KCRCÆs West Rail and MTRCÆs Tseung Kwan O railway extension, together with five no retendered TBM drives for the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) following forfeiture of the works by the Campenon Bernard-Maeda JV in mid-1997. The JV claimed unreasonable specifications leading to unacceptable levels of water inflow and dangerous working conditions. Key technical issues that are now arising in Hong Kong are:the general use of design and build contracts for bored tunnel contracts;a trend to accept TBM options for relatively short drives in urban areas;the use of æfixed-priceÆ contracts which in the current competitive market, can encourage tenderers to take contractors to take very high risks; andthe difficulty of predicting and managing water inflows in rock tunnels.This paper also includes a new empirical method of predicting water inflows in rock tunnels, and makes recommendations for managing these on-site.

n interesting situation arose last week when two Vaal River residents wrote to me (and a third telephoned) giving me details of how Sasol wanted to develop an open-cast coal mine on the south bank of the Vaal, just upstream of the Barrage. This is agricultural land and is across the river from Millionaire?s Row, where a number of wealthy people have built river-side mansions. The mine would be hidden by a 30 m-high (10 storeys) earth wall set 300 m back from the edge of the river. It could operate 24 hours a day.
