Laboratory tests conducted by the author. together with actual field experience in Canada. have indicated the magnitudc of some of the factors affecting ability of drilling mud to clean the hole. A correlation was observed between funnel viscosity and particle slip velocity. A relationship was also observed between the Bingham yield value of the mud and the particle .slip velocity. Laburatury tests indicated little change in slip velocity with funnel viscosities up to ahout 80 sec/qt or to yield values of aboul 15 lb/100 .sq ft. The lip velocity of the partic1e.s. studied vuried from 160 ft/min with water to neerly zero for high mud viscositie. lncreasing the mud density, creating laminar annular mud flow or rotating the drill pipe Mlay also improve the carrying capacity of mud. Field tests indicated that during fast upper-hole drilling, the rate of cutting removal must he sufficien to maintain the concentration of cuttings in the annulus at less than 5 percent by volume to prevernt balled-up drill collars and .stuck drill pipe. INTRODUCTION In the Mid-Continent area, hole cleaning during rotary drilling normally involves the use of low-density drilling muds with funnel viscosities varying from 26 to 80 sec/qt. However, frequently it is necessary to raise the mud viscosity in excess of 200 sec/qt to clean the hole. In addition, field experience has indicated that during very fast upper-hole drilling, annular mud velocities considerably in excess of the maximum slip velocity of the cuttings (normally considered to be 120 to 150 ft/min) are necessary to prevent balling the bit and drill collars. In view of these variations in mud properties and circulation rates necessary to clean the wellbore, a study of factors affecting hole cleaning and the relative magnitude of each was undertaken. The study was also prompted by the knowledge that a drilling mud with properties close to those of water would drill at rates several times that of a viscous mud. The carrying capacity of these near-water muds was not clearly understood, however, and many drillers were reluctant to use them. DISCUSSION EFFECT OF MUD PROPERTIES ON DRILLING RATE The effect of mud properties on drilling rate has been studied by a number of investigators. 1t is clear from their work that mud properties close to those of water will significantly improve drilling rate and bit life. If the water-type mud will also effectively clean the hole and cause no logging or formation impairment problems, the choice of an appropriate drilling fluid is clear—use water. Often, however, a water-type drilling fluid is not capable of effectively cleaning the hole. THEORY OF PARTICLE SETTLING The forces acting on a particle that is allowed to settle through a fluid quickly reach equilibrium, and the particle settles at some constant velocity referred to as the slip velocity. The slip velocity of any particle depends upon a number of factors such as density and viscosity of the fluid, the volume, specific gravity, shape and roughness of the particle, and upon the shape and area of the projected face of the particle at right angles to the direction of relative fluid solid movement. Brown' expressed this relationship for spheres in Newtonian fluids in the following equation. where v, = slip velocity D, — diameter of sphere p, = density of spheye p, = density of liquid /a = friction factor g = constant. The friction factor f, varies as the size, shape, surface roughness and slip velocity of the body, and as the density and viscosity of the fluid varies. WaddelV ound experimentally that where dynamic similarity exists. f, was a function of the particle Reynolds number (NRe) of the sphere (Fig. 1). Fig. 1 shows that f, for spheres varies from over 10 for low NKe numbers to 0.44 for N,,. over 600.

El presente texto señala las características del yacimiento geológico Cerro Lindo determinándolo como parte del tipo sulfuros masivos volcanogénicos (VMS) y propone un modelo genético de su formación genética. El yacimiento minero Cerro Lindo se ubica en Ica, Perú y es depósito de sulfuros masivos volcanogénicos donde dichos sulfuros bandeados de baritina y Zn se depositaron por precipitación de los fluidos hidrotermales calientes en contacto con el agua de mar. A medida que la temperatura ascendía en las celdas hidrotermales, se desarrollan los sulfuros piritosos con los fluídos cupríferos, de forma que las fallas sin volcánicas sirvieron para que la ocurrencia de bajos estructurales donde se desarrollaron cuerpos de gran potencia, determinen los altos estructurales que preservaron sulfuros masivos de alta ley de zinc.

DURING colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still func-tioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned pros-pects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Gold was first reported from this region in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1811, D. João VI sent an experienced prospector from Minas Geraes to investi-gate the validity of the reports. Projects to be undertaken in remote locations require special attention with regard to constructability from the very first stages of design. This is to ensure not only that the project is compatible with the environment in which it' is proposed to be built, but that it does not require facilities or special construction equipment and expertise that is not available in the proposed location. Metallographic, thermal, X-ray, and vapor-pressure data were employed in establishing the Ce-Zn phase diagram. Nine compounds and three eutectics were observed. The eutectic compositions in weight percent zinc and temperatures are 10 pct and 495"C, 37 pct and 795°C, and 56 pct and 810°C. Three of the compounds, CeZn, CeZnn, and CeZne.5, melt congru-ently at 825°, 87.505°, and 980°C, respectively; the other six compounds, CeZns, CeZns.67, CeZn4.5, CeZn5.25, CeZn,, and CeZnll, decompose peritectically at 820°, 840°, 870°, 885", 960°, and 795"C, respectively. The compound CeZn5.25 is an AB5 type with a small range of composition which lies on the zinc-rich side of the 1 to 5 stoichiometry. Zinc vapor-pressure data obtained by the dewpoint method were employed in calczilating the thermodynamic properties of both the liquid alloys and solid compounds. The data for the A critical review of the information available on the Ce-Zn system up to 1960 has been given by K. Gschneidner, Jr.' Of particular interest is the work by J. schramm2 who investigated the region between 55 and 100 wt pct Zn and reported a CeZn,, compound which decomposes peritectically at 785"C, a CeZn, compound which melts congruently at 972"C, and five temperature horizontals at 79@, 817", 840", liquid alloys were fitted to the relation from which the relation was obtained by integration. In these relations F XS is the excess partial molal free energy, N is atom fraction, and the constants c and d have the values c = (-22,000 + 7.0T) and d = 6171,000 + 74.0T). Relations for the standard free energy of formation for the solid compounds were derived from the data. At 973°K the enthalpy in kilocalories per gram-atom z)aries from —11.3 for CeZnz to —8.21 for CeZn~l and the free energy in the same units varies from —7.1 joy CeZn, to -3.82 for CeZn11. and 942°C in the region between 55 and 75 wt pct Zn. No attempt was made to identify other features of the system. I. Johnson and R. yonko3 used a fused-salt cell to measure the electromotive force between pure cerium and an alloy consisting of zinc-rich liquid in equilibrium with CeZnll. The purpose of the separation processes in coal processing is obtaining products of certain ash contents. In the most of cases it is assumed that the separation process is described by one, selected parameter, which usually is grain size or material density. The separation may be described by means of statistical distributions of random variables, what allows forecasting the separation results of certain enrichment method. There are very well known the applications of approximations of Tromp separation curves or distribution functions of Erasmus, Meloy or Weibull. It is necessary to say that if the fitness of the approximation more suitable, then the characteristics of the process itself is also better. In purpose of obtaining more appropriate results, these methods were modified by application the mathematical functions, as i.e. hyperbolic tangens function. Furthermore, on the basis of empirical data, so-called interpolations may be performed in purpose of getting more appropriate results of approximation. One of the most known techniques of interpolation is Hughes method. This method for interpolating standard data involves breaking down each interval into a number of smaller sub-intervals. The results of such one-dimensional approach not always contain the full in-formation of the searched distribution. It happens because such interpretation of the problem is not completely correct. In practice, the separation process depends not only on the one parameter (i.e. grain size), but also on many other features characterizing certain material (i.e. its density). It seems then that in some cases the application of multidimensional grain characteristics distributions will be more appropriate. In this paper, the technique of joining the distributions of grain size and density by means of so-called Morgenstern distributions is shown. The general form of these distributions is as following:

The method for predicting coke strength developed at Steinkohlenberg-bauverein, Germany, in which experimental parameters are readily determined by small-scale laboratory tests, was found to be applicable to cokes produced from industrially used blends of American coals. Predicted 1-inch ASTM tumbler indices for four industrial blends were found to be in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined values. The laboratory determined prediction parameters include the proximate analysis of the coal the size consist of the coal, and Ruhr dilatometer test data.

Commercial development of the mineral resources of southwestern Missouri began about 1850 and spread into southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, forming the Tri-State Mining District with Joplin as the urban center (fig. 1). The value of the Tri-State mineral production from 1850 to 1950 exceeded one billion dollars, and until 1945 the region was the world's leading producer of lead and zinc concentrates, accounting for one-half of the zinc and one-tenth of the lead produced in the United States (Gibson, 1972 1). By 1950 most of the rich ores had been extracted, and mining and milling operations declined during the 1950's and ceased in the 1960's. The sulfide minerals, mainly galena and sphalorite, were mined from cherty limestones at depths of 25 to 75 m (meters). Crude ores were brought from the mines to the surface where they were milled into lead and zinc concentrates. , Barren rock was discarded in piles while the ore-bearing rock was crushed and ground into fine gravel. The minerals were separated from the rock by a jigging process and the tailings were skimmed off and discarded in large piles. Ground-water flooding of the mines was controlled by constant pumping. When pumpage declined in the 1950's and 1960's tile abandoned mine drifts and shafts filled with water. At present (1977) numerous tailings piles and flooded mines remain as visible evidence of the mining era and as a threat to the quality of ground and surface waters of the area. In 1976 the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Ozark Gateway Council of Governments made a study of the effects of the mines and tailings piles on water quality in the Missouri part of the Tri-State District. The study area covers approximately the southwestern quarter of Jasper County, an area of about 725 km2 (square kilometers), and is bounded by long 94 o 15' w.' and the Missouri-Kansas state line, and lat 37 o 15 N., and the Jasper-Newton County line.

Traditional techniques for the experimental determination of toxic fumes produced by the detonation of high explosives are not applicable to blasting agents. To detonate properly, blasting agents require confinement, a significant booster, charge diameters of 3 inches (7.5 cm) or greater, and charge lengths greater than two times the charge diameter. Without these conditions, blasting agents will not detonate at full order, leading to a misrepresentation of the gaseous products.

Pillar recovery continues to be a significant ground control hazard. During the past decade, 10 miners were killed during pillar extraction operations in southern West Virginia. Studies conducted during the past decade have identified a number of "risk factors" that can be used to evaluate pillar extraction plans: Cut sequence Final stump Timber or Mobile Roof Supports Roof bolting Intersection span Depth of cover Roof quality Age of workings For each of these factors, rock mechanics science suggests which alternative would be expected to be more risky. For example, numerical models were used to evaluate different cut sequences, and indicated that less roof convergence occurred with the outside lift method than with the Christmas tree in the particular environment simulated. For many of the risk factors, accident statistics confirm the science. One finding was that currently almost 70% of the retreat coal in southern WV is being mined with MRS. In contrast, timber supports were used in 70% of the past decade's pillaring fatalities. This paper discusses each of the risk factors in turn, presents the relevant accident statistics, and shows how the risk factors can be combined to estimate the overall hazard. It also addresses the use of pillar design to minimize the risk of global stability hazards including squeezes. massive collapses, and bumps.

Re-opening of the old Proprietary mine has provided new exposures of the system of uralite dolerite dykes observed in 19110 by the Geological Sub-Committee of the Scientific Society of Broken Hill. The newly exposed dykes have been invaded and replaced by the massive ore, with development of manganese garnet and biotite adjacent to the sulphides. A similarly altered dyke in massive ore has been encountered in the North Broken Hill mine.The textures of the unaltered portions of these dykes indicate that they have not been affected by the intense regional metamorphism that has recrystallized the other rocks of the area. Moreover, in mineral composition and textures, in chemical composition, and in cross-cutting relations, they are so similar to the uralite dolerites of the district which post-date the folding and metamorphism of the Broken Hill area, that they must be regarded as typical members of this suite of post-metamorphic dykes.The invasion and replacement of the dykes by the massive sulphide ore, and their metasomatic alteration adjacent to the invading sulphides, establishes that the lode was formed after the dykes were intruded, so that the high temperature features of the ore cannot be attributed to metamorphism and recrystallization, but are primary features of high temperature hydrothermal deposition.INTRODUCTIONTwo cross dykes are recorded on the plan of the 300-ft. level of the Broken Hill lode accompanying the report on the geology of the Broken Hill lode published by the Geological Sub-Committee of the former Scientific Society of Broken Hill (1910). One dyke occurs in Block 12, and the other in Block 13, and both were stated to consist of a dark basic amphibole rock, called diorite for convenience. The Circum-Pacific is defined to include back arcs and continental areas of volcanism. Volcanoes must be regarded as dormant, if the time since their last eruption is less than about ten times the average interval between eruptions, even if they have not erupted for tens of thousands of years or longer. It is important to establish a complete history, over as long a period as possible, for varying volumes of eruptions. In order to assess risk, the average interval between eruptions should be calculated for each range of erupted vo4ume~, in orders of magnitude from about 10 m up to the maximum volume possible at each volcano. Eruptions are considered to consist of individual explosions, and are grouped into eruptive sequences, with the sequences grouped into overall cycles of activity. Frequency of eruption versus volume erupted is a linear relationship for most andesitic and basaltic volcanoes, but is often bimodal at rhyolitic volcanoes, 3 with a slower eruption rate above about 10 km. Worldwide, during the last 7000 years, there have been three known e~uptions with volumes of ejecta of > 100 km , a9d, since 1638 A.D., 7 with volumes > 10 km , and 48 with volumes > 1 km . Average recurrence intervals are about 71 years for eruptions of > 20 km , 39 years for those of > 10 km , and 7 years for those of > 1 km . Rough esti- mates can be made for larger volumes erupted. Mean intervals in the Circum-Pacific are about twice the length of those for the world as a whole. During the last 400 years, about 61% of the world's eruptions of > 1 km3 have taken place in this region.

The subject of violent bumps in coal mines has been again brought to attention by a recent succession of such occurrences in the coal mines of the Cumberland field of eastern Kentucky and southern Virginia, which have caused fatalities and injuries to underground employees, a report on which is being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines1. The A.I.M.E. has had two valuable papers on bumps in the No. 2 Mine, Springhill, Nova Scotia, each followed by general discussion on bumps and their causes2. This paper gives a brief review of suggested causes and remedial measures given in English, Canadian and United States reports on blimps in coal mines, and then presents suggestions arising from the writer's recent investigation of the bumps in the Cumberland mines, made at the request of the mine operators, to determine the causes and remedies. These bumps, which occur under the simplest natural conditions, provide better opportunity for analysis of causes and effects than afforded under more complex conditions. The simple conditions in this field consist of relatively thin and level coal beds and uniform roof strata free from folding and faulting. Tonnage oxygen plays a critical role in the primary production of two of the most important industrial metals - copper and iron - and minute quantities of oxygen play equally critical roles in determining the properties of the market products. For refined copper, oxygen in the final metal is balanced between maximizing electrical conductivity, neutralizing the effects of harmful impurities, and ensuring that the metal takes on the desired "set" during casting - the surface texture and physical properties required for subsequent rolling and drawing. For refined iron, oxygen must be removed to minimize reaction with carbon during cooling from the molten state with the generation of CO and CO2 - leading to a loss of carbon and the creation of "blow-holes" in the solid ingots and the potential for defects in rolled and forged products. This paper reviews the thermodynamics of oxygen in molten copper and iron at the levels of primary interest to production metallurgists.

Examination of the economics and environmental consequences associated with phosphate fertilizer production documents the necessity for development of innovative production technologies. Evidence of phosphate ore's susceptibility to microbial alteration indicates that it will be an ideal candidate for industrial-scale bioseparation. There are at least two applications for the biosolu- bilization technology: (1) an industrial-scale bio- process similar to the presently used wet acid process and (2) production of small prills (bio- bead) containing unprocessed rock phosphate and the biological ingredients necessary to promote phosphate solubilization. At the present stage of development, the biobead technology is the preferred application. It is an energy-efficient "green" technology that will dramatically reduce the amount of solid waste and air emissions produced by the phosphate industry.

Para ello, se evalúa la mineralización del plomo y zinc con relación a la tectónica de placas, los yacimientos relacionados a los rasgos mordo estructurales, la distribución de las provincias metalogenéticas con relación a los rasgos geológicos peruanos y la petrogénesis relacionado a la metalogenia del plomo-zinc en el Perú.

The General Crushed Stone Company at Doswell VA. decided to open a new pit to expand their reserves. The elevation of the property was 136 feet above the present primary crusher. The project required driving twin tunnels under the highway to access the primary crusher from the new property. A shaft was needed to pass blasted rock to the tunnel elevation where it's loaded and hauled to the primary crusher. In addition, a ventilation shaft was required to provide adequate airflow. Dynatec Mining Contractors Inc. Lakewood Colorado was subcontracted to handle the tunnel and shaft development.

"A sulfide ore containing 2.19 g/t Au and 13.13 g/t Ag was studied for the deportment and extractive metallurgy of pay metals. The ore is composed mainly of non-sulfide minerals with approximately 10% pyrite and minor amounts of marcasite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, and arsenopyrite. The deportment study using a comprehensive approach showed that gold and silver minerals in the ore are mainly native gold (Au), electrum (Ag, Au), petzite (Ag3AuTe2), hessite (Ag2Te) and volynskite (AgBiTe2) with minor amounts of acanthite (Ag2S) and argyrodite (Ag8GeS6). At current grinding fineness (P70@150µm), the majority of liberated native gold and electrum particles are larger than 20µm with 85% >40µm, some of them are even larger than 150µm, indicating that extended leach time may be required to dissolve these coarse gold grains to completion and gravity concentration needs to be considered. Petzite is relatively fine with all liberated particles being less than 80µm in size. Gold distribution and leach testwork results showed that liberated gold accounts for 50% of the head assay, exposed gold associated with sulfide and non-sulfide minerals accounts for 30% and 11% of the head assay, respectively. Gold locked in sulfide and non-sulfide accounts for 4.8% and 4.1%, respectively. Thus, it is recommended that cyanide leaching be considered for extracting gold in this ore. This paper presents the detailed results of the gold and silver deportment study and extractive metallurgy testwork, and discusses the impact on process selection and flowsheet development.INTRODUCTION Gold and silver have been found in various geological environments and ore types. In terms of the gold deportment and extractability, gold ores can be classified into two categories and 12 types. Their extractive metallurgy is largely driven by mineralogical factors such as particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals and locking of submicroscopic gold in sulfide and sulfarsenide mineral structures (Zhou et al., 2004; Marsden & House, 2006; Zhou, 2013a, 2013b). Compared to gold, silver mineralogy is more complex and metal extraction is more challenging due to its presence in over 200 Ag-bearing minerals (a silver-rich ore body would typically contain 5 to 10 different silver minerals) (Gasparrini, 1984), presence of refractory silver minerals (such as pyrargyrite, prustite and stephanite) and submicroscopic silver in sulphide minerals (such as galena and copper minerals) (Chryssoulis et al., 1985; Di Prisco et al., 2002). The presence of these issues often causes problems in Ag-bearing ore processing. Therefore, knowing the deportment of gold and silver in the ores and metallurgical products is important for flowsheet development and process optimization."
