Recovery of galena and sphalerite from fine grained lead-zinc ores by flotation normally requires re-grinding to achieve economic recoveries at acceptable concentrate grades. Re-grinding aims to reduce the coarse valuable mineral particles to a size where they float more readily and to liberate the composite valuable particles so that the gangue in these composites does not dilute the concentrate. Besides changing particle size and liberation, re-grinding changes the surfaces of the minerals and thus may alter the rate that mineral particles of a given size and liberation float. A method was developed to apportion the total change in recovery after re-grinding between changes in size and liberation and changes in flotation rates. The flotation behaviour of minerals, before and after re-grinding, was measured by floating samples of plant streams under controlled conditions in a laboratory cell. Results from several industrial lead-zinc circuits indicated that the change in behaviour observed fell into three different categories. It is concluded that the method will indicate whether the focus for optimization of existing plant should be on comminution or flotation, and it will help determine the path for laboratory testing in designing new regrind circuits.

IN plants casting electric-furnace ingots and converting them immediately into blooms, billets, slabs, bars or forgings, the criterion of quality performance is the soundness of the semifinished or finished product. When rejections are necessary, it is not always obvious whether the defects were caused by an unsound ingot or by improper treatment during the heating and forming operations. To evaluate the effects of the numerous factors involved, it is necessary to accumulate a large number of detailed observations and to analyze and interpret these data properly. Even after a thorough investigation has been conducted, it is impossible, in some cases, to isolate the cause of the defect and say that it is definitely the result of an unsound condition in the ingot or mistreatment of the ingot during further processing. Two factors that are extremely difficult to evaluate are the chemical composition of the steel and time from finish pour to charge in the soaking pits or "track time," and it is necessary to evaluate their combined effects before many other factors can be studied. Plain carbon, fine-grained steel in the range of 0.18 to 0.23 pct carbon, is very susceptible to cracking and the longer the elapsed time between the pouring of the ingots and stripping for charging into the soaking pits, the higher the billet rejections for cracks are found to be. Crushed stone leads all industrial mineral, except cement in annual value of production in the United States. It is also interesting to note that crushed stone value is exceeded only by that of fuels, cement, and iron ore among all mineral products of this country. An industry which started with hand-sledging to produce smaller sizes of broken stone for hard surfaced improvement of roadways as designed by McAdam in England about 1815 has grown into a complex industrial giant. Most of this growth started with the invention of a mechanical rock crusher just under one hundred years age (1858) by Eli Whitney Blake. This invention made possible the production of greater tonnages of smaller sizes of broken stone and greatly accelerated its use for Macadam road pavements and for railroad ballast. Stones Used for Crushing All three of the major geologic classifications of stone, sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic, are widely used in the production of crushed stone. Satisfactory physical and chemical properties can be found in each type so that economic availability becomes the prime determinant for development. Table 1 lists more common rocks of the three main groups with average values of specific gravity and toughness as measured by Deval test. This widely used classification was suggested by C. E. Lord, of U. S. Bureau of Public Roads. The physical properties were compiled by D. O. Woolf in "The Results of Physical Tests of Road Building Rock," U. S. Department of Agriculture, Bulletin 76. It should be noted that the figures given in Table 1 are averages. Very substantial variations in the physical properties of rocks within any one classification will occur. The solid surface of the earth was first made up of igneous rocks resulting from the solidification or crystallization of molten material upon cooling. These igneous rocks were disintegrated into sand, clay, and gravel by the weathering action of wind, water, chemicals, [ ] and temperature changes. The products of weathering were transported by wind and streams until they reached less turbulent areas such as oceans or lakes and were deposited. "The earliest gold-mining operations in Ontario included the Cordova, Deloro, and Sophia mines north of Lake Ontario (see for example, Miller and Knight, 1914). The Cordova deposit, worked intermittently between 1891 and 1940, is reported to have yielded 22 774 oz of gold from 127 670 tons of ore averaging 0.19 oz/ton Au (Gordon et al., 1979). The property remained inactive for many years. In 1988, Gunnar Gold Inc. and Mill City Gold Inc. conducted a drilling program along the main Cordova vein. The present study is based on core from three drill holes through the Cordova gabbro (Fig. 1) and the carbonate alteration zones enveloping the quartz-carbonate veins. The relatively narrow width of the alteration zone and the availability of continuous sections of core provided an opportunity to conduct a compact mineralogical-chemical study of carbonate alteration and its effect on the redistribution of rare earth elements (REEs). Although the Cordova deposit is not of great economic importance, this study has revealed a number of interesting features which are interpreted as resulting from processes that may be applicable to gold-bearing quartz vein deposits elsewhere.The Cordova gabbro is layered in places, varying from fine-to coarse-grained and in color from light gray (feldspathic) to dark gray-green (amphibolitic). However, layering within the section of the gabbro considered here and which hosts the Cordova gold deposit is mainly textural rather than compositional. Samples of unaltered gabbro selected for analyses were medium- to coarse-grained; amphibolitic and anorthositic phases were avoided as being less representative of the general chemical composition of the gabbro.The Cordova intrusion has undergone regional metamorphism and consists dominantly of actinolite and saussuritized plagioclase with smaller amounts of granular clinozoisite and flaky chlorite; minor quartz, ilmenite, titanite, apatite, and calcite are typically present. Some actinolite grains have irregular rims of pleochroic green hornblende that is optically continuous with the actinolite. Both chlorite and clinozoisite occur in two modes. Chlorite occurs as an alteration product of actinolite and as separate grains in the groundmass. Clinozoisite and albite occur together as regional metamorphic alteration products of original plagioclase crystals and as discrete grains in the matrix.The main gold-bearing quartz-carbonate occurrence occupies an easterly trending, steeply southward-dipping carbonatized shear zone up to 15 m wide and 700 m long. The gold occurs principally in irregular lenses and veins of quartz-carbonate up to a foot thick occupying the lower part of the schistose shear zone within the gabbro. This zone consists of chlorite, biotite, and carbonate and is flanked on both sides by chlorite-carbonate schist lacking biotite. The chlorite-carbonate schist in turn grades into regionally metamorphosed actinolite-bearing undeformed gabbro.The dominant sulfide within the quartz-carbonate lenses and in the surrounding schist is pyrite which occurs mainly as small cubes (1 mm to 2 mm) generally making up less than 10% of the rock. Rare blebs of chalcopyrite are present. Magnetite is common throughout the schist."

"Abstract - Twenty-seven marine Mn and Fe deposits chosen for their diverse origins have been analyzed for five platinum-group elements (PGE). The PGE display their highest concentrations in hydrogenous Mn crusts and nodules, lesser concentrations in diagenetic nodules and two to three orders of magnitude lower concentrations in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. This difference of behavior reflects the well-known fractionation of Mn and Fe from the other transition elements, rare earth elements (REE) and PGE in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir show a close geochemical coherence in these deposits and are differentiated from Pd which shows a negative anomaly with respect to the other PGE in hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits. Pd is less depleted than the other PGE and the Pd anomaly much less pronounced in the hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts relative to the hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits.Stability field diagrams show no evidence for the oxidation of Pt to the tetravalent state in seawater as suggested by some authors. Rather, Pt appears to be present in seawater as Pt(OH)2 0. Adsorption of Pt(OH)2 0 onto the surface of Mn and Fe oxyhydroxide minerals may explain the enrichment of Pt in marine Mn deposits. However, Pt metal is the thermodynamically stable solid phase of Pt under seawater conditions and reduction of Pt(OH)2 0 to Pt metal, particularly in the vicinity of the oxygen minimum zone, is possible, although the high Ce/La ratios of the Co-rich Mn crusts do not support this hypothesis. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir display their maximum concentrations in the Corich Mn crusts. This may reflect, among other things, the low growth rates of these deposits. The stability field diagram of Pd shows that Pd is undersaturated in seawater and occurs in seawater dominantly as PdCl4 2- and anionic mixed-hydroxide-chloride complexes. This would explain the anomalous position of Pd among the PGE with respect to its uptake into marine Mn deposits. A study of inter-element associations indicates that the incorporation of the PGE from meteoritic dust plays only a minor role in the uptake of these elements into marine Mn deposits. The PGE remain the most poorly studied group of elements in marine Mn deposits. The data presented here emphasize the need for the establishment of a more comprehensive database of the PGE in marine Mn deposits in order to understand more fully their uptake into marine Mn deposits and their pathways through the oceans."

I have bad considerable experience with the testing-machine at the Watertown Arsenal, having had broken there sixteen large steel eye-bars, besides quite a number of iron bars and two compression members. So far as accurate mid satisfactory results are concerned, the machine is all we could ask for, and the officers who have it in charge, together with their civil assistants, are thoroughly conversant with it 1 details, and entirely competent to make the tests required. The principal defect is that the force is very inadequate. As the machine is arranged, tile weighing apparatus is at one end and stationary, the measure of strain being carried from this to the scale-beam by the fluid in a tube m small that it looks like a wire. At the other end is placed the hydraulic press by which the power is applied; this press is mounted on a small carriage and held by two eight-inch screws about four feet above the floor, which arc of course strained in compression during tensile tests, and in tension during' compression tests. When the stretch of the material has exhausted the throw of the plunger it is necessary to relieve the strain, draw back the plunger, and move the carriage along, which is done by nuts turned by steam working on the large screws. Every specimen placed in the machine must be lifted above the large screws and lowered into position. To do this, crabs, running on travellers, which span the entire room, are placed over the machine, and by these the specimen can be lifted and put in place. The actual time required to make a test depends largely on the amount which the material stretches, bat it may generally be said, that for specimens which will stretch from two to three feet the

In many of the otherwise well established alloy phase diagrams the solidus curves (temperatures at which liquid first appears upon melting) have not been located accurately, chiefly because the experimental techniques that have been most popular for determining solidus temperatures have been both cumbersome and subject to large errors. C. E. Homer and H. Plummerl have described a sensitive and at the same time a very simple technique for locating the solidus curves in a number of alloys of tin. Their method consists simply in noting the temperature at which a specimen of the alloy ruptures under the influence of a light bending force. Although this method is not new, it has been little used for this purpose in the past; nevertheless, it appears so attractive in its possibilities of speed, simplicity, and precision that the investigations presently to be described were undertaken to verify its merits. The redetermination of the solidus and eutectic temperatures of the lead-antimony system was employed as a medium of experimentation. New values obtained in this way are believcd to be sufficiently precise to warrant a revision of the currently accepted lead-antimony phase diagram (Fig. I). Determinations of the solidus of the lead-rich lead-antimony alloy series have been published by X. S. Dean2 and by E. E. Schumacher and F. C. Nix. Their points are represented in Fig. I. In their work the solidus was not located at antimony collcentrations greater than 2 per cent; the curve was presumed to meet the eutectic horizontal at an antimony concentration of about 2.5 per cent. In the present studies the solidus has been traced to 3.5 per cent, where the eutectic horizontal is intersected (Table I and Fig. I). Within the range investigated by Dean and by Schumacher and Nix the agreement with their values is good. H. Seltz and B. De Witt,4 on the basis of activity measurements, have calculated that the intersection of the solidus and the eutectic reaction horizontal should lie at 3.86 per cent of antimony. The following determinations of the eutectic temperature have been reported: Roland-Gosselin,5 228°C.; Ewen,6 228OC.; J. E. Stead,7 24g°C.; Campbell,8 228°C.; W. Gontermann,9 245' to 252°C.; R. OVERVIEW Blind drilled shafts are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in the Appalachian coalfields, as a secondary and sometimes primary means of ventilation. The reasons for the rebirth of the blind shaft are mainly due to it's economics, timeliness, safety characteristics and inherent independence from underground operations. Historically blind drilling has been used to a limited degree in hard rock and tunneling ventilation. With the recent advances in cutters, bit design, equipment and lining systems, particularly in the Appalachian coalfields, blind drilled shafts are once again the shaft construction technique of choice to the educated ventilation specialist. [ ] HISTORY OF BLIND DRILLING Blind drilling has it's roots in numerous places, including the Nevada Test site, the coalfields of Appalachia and Germany along with the uranium mines of Arizona. Early technology was developed using a variety of equipment mainly of oilfield origin with oilfield drillers entering the industry on a project basis only to "pull in their horns" and return to the oil patch. Shafts completed by oilfield equipment range from the shallow 5' and 6' lined shafts on the Nevada test site to two (2) 10' lined, 730' deep shafts in Alberta for heavy oil development. Several of these shafts were completed to extraordinary depths with the record being a 90" diameter, 6,150' deep shaft being completed in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska in 1969. EQUIPMENT Oilfield equipment is still being used on the Nevada test site but elsewhere specialized blind hole equipment has been developed to enhance the efficiency of particular applications. Where steel liners are required the A-leg derrick with a simple hoist and rotary system is used. The largest user of this type equipment in the world is the former USSR where blind drilling for mine ventilation is the norm. On applications where trip time and cutter changeout are a priority, top drive hydraulic rigs have been developed which are highly automated, efficient and mobile. These rigs are particularly well suited for tunneling applications where shafts are shallow and sites are usually tight.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of barite (BaSO4) from 35 U.S. and 41 non-U.S. mines and deposits in 17 market economy countries (MEC's). This evaluation assesses the availability of mud-grade barite, and concentrates consumed by the chemicals and fillers industries. The demonstrated resources defined in this analysis totaled 130 million metric tons (Mmt) of barite (contained BaSO4), yielding a potential 115 Mmt of recoverable barite concentrates. At the 1984 MEC production rate, the evaluated resources would last about 30 yr; however, this would include production costs of up to $100/mt concentrate. An average price needed to cover all costs of production over the life of each operation was determined for both mud-grade and chemical- and filler-grade barite products. Including a 0-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), regional weighted- average total production cost ranged from $38/mt for barite concentrates in Asia to $71/mt for U.S. operations. Transportation costs have the greatest impact, contributing up to 60 pct of the total cost of production. Rail transportation costs from the mines to U.S. markets are generally significantly higher than ocean shipping rates on imports.

The iron-nickel alloys, therefore, have been investigated exten-sively regarding both their structures and their properties. The researches on these alloys up to 1938 have been collected and critically reviewed by J. S. Marsh,1 and will be discussed in some detail in the sec-tions of this paper dealing with specific subjects. These numerous investigations have not succeeded in establishing the equilibrium conditions in this system. Alloys containing more than a certain amount of nickel (8 to10 per cent Ni) undergo the allotropic transformation extremely sluggishly, both on heating and cooling, showing a large hysteresis,2 which is not dependent upon

THE influence of mineral production on the development of the western United States has been profound. From 1848 to 1860, there was only gold production, the effect of silver began in 1860, and from then on both had a powerful influence. Lead production started in 1863, copper in 1863, and zinc in 1885, but was small until 1898. Gold alone was therefore the stimulus of the early settlement and exploration of the Western States.. But mineral deposits caused neither acquisition of territory nor determination of boundary lines. Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and parts of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado were formally acquired from Mexico fourteen days after the actual date of the discovery (January 19, 1848)1.2 of gold at Sutters Mill, near the present town of Coloma, California (a discovery which, with the immediate new discoveries, aroused the world several months later) ; but the acquisition was by treaty (under negotiation for some time but signed February 2, 1848)3 in settlement of a war involving the boundaries of the grassy plains of Texas, an area at that time not known to contain any metals, and to date found to have but few metal deposits.4 The international boundary at 49º latitude for the far northwest states was determined by causes other than mineral deposits.

Nast Tunnel is the first granitic rock tunnel to be excavated by a machine for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The machine has excavated 7500 ft of the tunnel at this writing. There have been a few good performances; 31 ft in 1, 8 hr shift, and 75 ft in a 24 hr period, but generally, progress has been slower than that accomplished in the area with reasonable comparable conditions using conventional excavation techniques. Button cutters, now employed using compression as the means of fracturing the rock, gives an average cutting rate of 3 ft per hr. Disc cutters manufactured by the machine builders were tried briefly but the snap rings holding the discs to the hub failed. However, disc cutting rates of 6 ft per hr were recorded for short periods of time in a competent coarse grained porphyritic granite. The snuck was also considerably larger and more easily handled than that produced by the button cutters. Hughes Tool Co. is working on a disc type cutter and expects to have them on the cutterhead by mid June. LOCATION, DESCRIPTION AND BID OPENING Nast Tunnel is located 2 miles west of the Continental Divide and 39 miles east of the town of Basalt in Pitkin County, Colorado. The outlet portal is in the Fryingpan River Valley at an elevation of 10,000 ft. The tunnel is a 3 mile long, 10 ft diameter gravity flow water conveyance structure and a part of the west slope water collection for the Bureau of Reclamation, Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. The Rheological properties of pulps are non-Newtonian in character and more than one viscosity parameter is necessary to describe their behavior, therefore, the single term 'apparent viscosity' which has been used in the past may be misleading. The study reported in this paper uses a dimensional analysis based on the Ostwald-de Waele shear stress-rate of shear model for non-Newtonian liquids to develop velocity and resistance equations for falling spheres. An electronic monitoring apparatus was assembled for determining the velocity of metallic bodies as they fall through opaque liquids and suspensions. By means of this apparatus the behavior of the viscosity parameters of the Ostwald-de Waele model and the applicability of the proposed equations were examined for a number of non-Newtonian liquids. The validity of the equations for these liquids was confirmed. Preliminary data collected using solid-liquid suspensions established the validity of the form of the basic equations for these systems. The differential movement of solid particles through solid-liquid pulps and suspensions is very important LO many branches of engineering, such as minerals processing, soil mechanics, ceramic slip processing, oil well drilling-mud technology, materials-handling in pipelines, and many others. There is a dearth of fundamental knowledge on the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. The resistance offered by Newtonian liquids to the movement of free settling spheres is well described for laminar and turbulent conditions by Stokes' and Newton's Laws, respectively. However, problems are encountered when attempts are made to extrapolate these simple relationships into solid liquid suspensions. The rheological properties of pulps are such that they are non-Newtonian in character;'" that is, the applied shearing stress and resulting rate-of-shear are related by non-linear functions, and thus, in the simplest case two viscosity parameters are necessary to describe their rheological properties. For this reason the single term 'apparent viscosity' which has been commonly used to explain the flow resistance of suspensions and non-Newtonian liquids may be misleading. It is realized that a rigorous analysis of the rnechanisms of momentum transport of liquid-solid systems is complex indeed. There are many variables that affect the rheological properties of the systems such as density, size, shape, and surface energy of the suspended solid and density and viscosity of suspending liquid, as well as the solid to liquid ratio. However, it was felt that a useful contribution to the knowledge of the behavior of suspensions could be made by examining the systems in terms of the basic fundamentals of nowNewtonian flow. This has led to the development, by means of dimensional analysis, of velocity and resistance equations, using two viscosity parameters to describe the velocity of penetrating bodies and the flow resistance encountered by these bodies, as they pass through non-Newtonian systems. THEORY In order to examine the effects of the rheological properties of solid-liquid suspensions on the movement of immersed bodies it is appropriate to start with non-Newtonian liquids and develop equations, analogous to those of Stokes and Newton, for laminar and turbulent flow respectively, from which quantitative information may be obtained. Further investigation would then be directed at the complex suspension systems, and the effects of the many variables on the velocity and resistance equations. Liquids are classified on a basis of viscosity which may be defined as the relationship between applied shear stress and resulting rate of shear?-'* Pure single phase liquids composed of small light molecules behave as Newtonian liquids, having a single viscosity parameter since the shearing stress and rate-of-shear are related by a linear function. Bingham plastics are similar but have a yield stress. Of particular importance in our investigation are dilatant (shear thickening) and pseudoplastic (shear thinning) non-Newtonian liquids, with and without yield values.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Limited (ADM), manager and operator of the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture (ADMJV) will recruit approximately 400 employees during 1985 to operate the new large-scale, open-cut diamond mine and treatment plant being developed at Argyle, in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. These employees will live in Perth or environs and will commute to work at Argyle via chartered jet aircraft. On site, they will be accommodated in self-contained single person's quarters, with central messing and recreational facilities. Rostering systems have not been finalised, but it is likely employees will rotate through a cycle of 14 days at site and seven-days on leave in Perth. ADM spent three years evaluating residen- tial options before deciding to commute its workforce from Perth. Another 70 senior staff will reside in Kununurra (the nearest established town, 250 km from Argyle) and commute to the mine daily by air.
