In 1920, 531 million barrels of crude petroleum were coi~sumed in the United States. As imposing as this figure is, the fact that the domestic consumption of crude petroleum has increased at an average rate of 10 per cent. a year for the past decade is more striking. Will this rate of increase in demand continue? If so, the year 1930 will call for 1260 million barrels of petroleum—a staggering volume. On the other hand, may we expect the demand for petroleum to grow as rapidly as it did when the automotive industry was having its most phenomenal expansion? If not, to what extent will the growth of oil requirements decrease? When and to what degree will the petroleum industry become affected by the economic law of diminishing returns? Obviously, this matter requires careful analysis, especially as both national and industrial planning must be predicated upon present estimates of the requirements of the future. The purpose of this paper, accordingly, is to project, as closely as present limitations of knowledge permit, the course of the demand for petroleum in the United States over the next ten years. At first, the problem of estimating the future of a demand as complex as that for petroleum might appear insoluble. Fortunately, hon~ever, therc are several scientific methods of approaching the problem, centering around a study of rates of industrial growth, which lend considerable hope that the requirements of the immediate future in this field may be approximated with sufficient closeness to have practical value as a basis of action. An investigation has been made of 500 samples of universal and sheared plates of basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steel manufactured by the Pottstown Iron Company, the carbon-limits being 0.07 to 0.18 per cent. Through the courtesy of Mr. W. H. Morris, President, I am able to lag before the Institute the results of these tests. The samples tested were all taken from the finished material, and the chemical determinations were made on drillings from the broken test-pieces, which were sent to the chemist without giving him the heat-numbers. The results are such as to encourage me to keep on with the work, and, if possible, to have it carried out on other steels. It is kith this view that I now offer my tables in their incomplete form. My first table mas constructed by grouping the tests according to chemical analysis in various. ways, and making a rough tabulated statement, from which the ultimate strengths were worked out and carefully compared with the actual results of the tension-tests. From data thus obtained, one table after another was worked out, and by this method of "cutting and trying" I finally arrived at the results which I now present in Table I. (p. 771). I do not claim absolute accuracy, but my approximations have proved to be so close that the figures are practical data for current use at the works. The indications are that a pure iron, without carbon, phosphorus, manganese, or silicon, if it could be obtained, would give 38,000 pounds ultimate strength. This is assumed as a base, and to it is added the effect of each of the above elements, as explained below. The upper part of Table I. gives the ultimate strength due to carbon and phosphorus, and is the same for both basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steels. The lower part gives the increase in ultimate strength due to manganese. By adding this to the amount obtained from the upper part, we have the ultimate strength of basic Bessemer

During the initial nine-year deple-tion of the McKamie-Patton pool gas-condensate reservoir, the pressure behavior and fluid analyses indicated pressure maintenance by gas injection would be attractive relative to continued pressure depletion. As a result, a gas cycling program was inaugurated in Aug., 1949, which has since maintained reservoir pressure. In order to evaluate the benefits of this program, the recoveries for natural depletion and for cycling followed by blowdown were determined by calculating the fractional balance of the molar quantities of vapor and liquid remaining in the reservoir and produced at the surface for various stages of depletion. The results of the investigation show theoretical ultimate recovery due to the cycling program will be 42 per cent greater than would be realized under pressure depletion type operation. INTRODUCTION The benefits of gas injection pressure maintenance programs in condensate reservoirs have been recognized and qualitatively described in several papers1-8 during the past 15 years. Some of these papers also describe methods for calculating the increased recovery realized from cycling; however, as a rule, hypothetical reservoirs were used as examples".'.. This paper presents an evaluation of the pressure maintenance program for the McKamie-Patton condensate reservoir and includes a description of the fractional balance method employed to determine the benefits. Reservoir Development and Characteristics The McKamie-Patton pool, Lafayette County, Ark., was opened in June, 1940, with production obtained from the oolitic Smackover lime at a depth of approximately 9,300 ft. The structure is an anticline 8 miles long by 1 to 2 miles wide, and is one of many productive Smackover structures in Southern Arkansas. Of predominant importance is the condensate-bearing gas cap portion of the reservoir, which covers approximately 4,000 acres, attains a maximum thickness of some 200 ft, and has an average thickness of 90 ft. Development of the cap was accomplished with 21 wells drilled on 160 acre spacing. An isopach map of the cap is shown in Fig. 1. In addition, an oil rim is present along most of the periphery of the pool. Production practice includes field separation of black oil, and a high pressure gathering system which carries total well stream from gas cap wells to a plant where condensate is separated and the gas is processed for recovery of natural gasoline, butane, and propane. Since the gas contains appreciable hydrogen sulfide, it is removed by amine contact, after which free sulfur is produced by the Claus process. Core analyses from 1,767 gas cap formation samples averaged 14.2 per cent porosity and 379 md dry air permeability. Connate water was restored on seven samples of gas cap rock by air-brine capillary techniques, from which the interpreted water saturation averaged 28.17 per cent. During the early life of the field, it was believed the recovery mechanism, based on several of the other regional Smackover reservoirs, might be a natural water drive. However, subsequent production and pressure history revealed that the gas cap would not be produced by water drive, but would behave as a closed reservoir. "The influence of annealing of galvanized steel (galvannealing) on its corrosion kinetics in a saturated solution of Ca (OH)2 has been studied by means of the polarization resistance method.Galvannealing heat treatment was carried out at 450°C and 550°C for varying times. Annealing at 450°C for 24 hr or at 550°C for 5 hr showed the highest corrosion potential (Ecorr) ~= - 400 m V/ SCE as well as, the lowest corrosion current density (icorr ~= 3 mA.cm-2, while Ecorr and icorr of the unheated specimens were ~= - 1400m V/SCE and == 20 mA.cm-2, respectively.Polarization curves were also obtained for the as-received galvanized specimens together with the galvannealed ones.INTRODUCTIONHeat treatment of galvanized steel (i.e . galvannealing) is carried out at a temperature range of 450°C to 550°C for a time sufficient to convert the free zinc coating to an alloyed one consisting of layers of iron-zinc intermetallic compounds. Table I is a review of the properties of the Fe-Zn intermetallicphases while Figure I is a reproduction - of the Fe-Zn equilibrium phase diagram taken from Hansen.Several authors have studied the formation of intermetallic phases through the interdiffusion of Zn/Fe couples. Their results confirmed the stability of intermetallic phases that could be shown up on the outer surface as a result of galvannealing of galvanized steel.Bernick and Sievertv"" investigated the processing of galvan nealed steel. They found that the galvannealed coating with the best forming qualities consisted of a mixture of Zeta phase and Eta phase."

Coal mining historically has been a. hazardous occupation but, in recent years, tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental coal mine deaths and injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the basic principles of accident prevention as they are related to coal mining. Accident prevention fundamentals are no different for coal mining than for any other type of work. The fundamentals apply to all industries. Construction workers may be struck by falling tools and materials, and miners may be struck by falling slate and coal. Sailors may be trapped by shipboard fires, and miners may be trapped by mine fires. Railroad brakemen may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers, and miners may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers. Many other examples could be cited, but the point is that accidents that happen in coal mines are basically similar to accidents that happen in other industries. Thus, the basic principles for preventing accidents apply in coal mining as they do in any other type of work. COAL MINE ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is the main source for accident experience data in coal mines. Coal mine operators are required, by law, to forward to MSHA monthly the number of fatal and disabling injuries, man-hours worked, and tons of coal mined. This information is compiled and published quarterly, with annual summaries, by MSHA. Trends in the number of fatalities and fatal injury rates are shown in Fig. 1. Major coal mine disasters, with number of miners killed, and dates of coal mine safety legislation are shown in Table 1. The fatal and disabling injury frequency rates for the coal industry are shown in Fig. 2.

O desgaste abrasivo é o principal responsável por quebras de equipamentos e, como consequência, paradas não programadas para manutenção; pois causa a perda progressiva de material das partes móveis em contato e movimento relativo. O presente estudo analisa o desgaste abrasivo na superfície do rolete de carga dos transportadores de correia. Para a análise foi utilizado o equipamento abrasômetro do tipo roda de borracha conforme norma ASTM G65. Os procedimentos de ensaio contemplaram: o corte de quatro corpos de prova de aço 1020, limpeza, pesagem - utilizando balança de precisão, avaliação superficial com rugosímetro e ensaio de dureza. Dois corpos de prova foram revestidos com a tinta Laranja Munsell 2,5YR6/14m, para simular as condições de campo. Em seguida, foi realizado ensaio no abrasômetro ASTM G65; utilizando o procedimento “A” previsto na norma ASTM G65 - classificado como desgaste severo com carga de 130N. Logo depois, foi calculado o volume de material perdido e a taxa de desgaste. Os resultados obtidos nos ensaios possibilitaram concluir que, o desgaste predominante na superfície dos roletes de carga é o abrasivo por 3 corpos, em função, principalmente, do transbordo de minério do processo. A superfície do corpo de prova, sem revestimento, apresentou uma perda de material que compromete a vida útil do rolete e da correia. Já, na amostra revestida, foi possível observar que o desgaste abrasivo por três corpos ocorre, mas é reduzido consideravelmente; isso pode ser explicado pela diminuição da rugosidade superficial.

The Cawse nickel-cobalt operation is situated 50 km NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, at latitude30o22'30'' south and longitude 121o08'30'' east on the Kalgoorlie 1:250 000 geological map sheet (SH 51-9) (see Figure 1). The project is owned and operated by Centaur Nickel Pty Ltd (CTR) and was the first in Australia to commercially produce nickel metal and cobalt sulphide through pressure acid leach (PAL) technology. Cawse has a total resource base (all categories of resources + reserves) of 213 million tonnes Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni and 0.04 per cent Co, comprising 127 Mt at Cawse Central which is 100 per cent owned by CTR and 86 Mt at Cawse Extended where CTR has a 80 per cent equity. Cawse Extended is located immediately to the northwest of the Cawse Central leases. All current reserves (proved and probable) of 30 Mt at 1.0 per cent nickel are contained within Cawse Central. In addition the Siberia project area 20 kilometres to the NW has a resource of 63 Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni. Cawse is a dry laterite deposit, with nickel and cobalt hosted by iron and manganese oxides. Cawse Central mineralisation extends over a ten kilometre strike length, with three pits currently being mined. The Bunyip pit has the premier nickel and cobalt grades within Cawse Central. There are seven dominant lithology types forming mappable units within current pit exposures. Four of these units are host to nickel and cobalt mineralisation. Ore types are defined as Upgrade, Grind and Non-upgrade, depending on their physical characteristics with respect to the treatment route. Mining commenced in February 1998. To the end of calender 1999 the operation has produced 2100 tonnes nickel plate and 470 tonnes of cobalt as a cobalt sulphide product. Future production will target 9000 tonnes per annum Ni metal and up to 2000 tonnes per annum Co, based on processing 500 000 tonnes of ore per annum.

In March, 1988, a fire occurred in a large underground coal mine. Coal Mine Safety and Health of the Mine Safety and Health Administration was immediately notified of the situation. They requested the assistance of the Pittsburgh Health Technology Center (PHTC) to provide monitoring and analysis of the mine atmosphere in and around the fire area to insure the safety of the miners escaping from the mine and for the miners involved in extinguishing the fire. The capability to provide this type assistance is maintained by the PHTC Offices located at 4800 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The equipment used is maintained field ready and can be mobilized almost immediately. This paper will discuss the response to this recent major mine fire.

The comments by George L. Gates are appropriate to the characteristics that we sought to feature in our study and they are appreciated by the authors. In our laboratory deposition tests the smoothness of the surface seemed to be more important than the type of surface. However, we also noted that even where very smooth glass, plastic or polished metal coupons were used, scale deposition still occurred though the rate varied. Much more information is needed, however, and new work to solve the mineral scale deposition problem by mechanical and chemical means is expected to continue.

"Audrey Resources' Mobrun Mine is located in Dufresnoy Township some 30 km to the northeast of Rouyn-Noranda. The Mobrun tine deposits consist of two major massive sulphide lenses; the newly discovered 1100 lens located 450 m south of the Main zone, and one ntellite lens, the 850-870-930 complex.The 1100 lens is hosted in a large pyroclastic unit bounded to the mouth by rhyolite and andesite flows and by a thick rhyolite unit to the art h. stratigraphically belon the three lenses. It consists of approximately 15 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 10.4 Mt are of economic ade. The Main lens lies comformably above thick rhyolite flows, ecciated and pyritized by the sulphide horizon, and is overlain by ttercalated ash tuffs and rhyolites which host the over-lying satellite ns. The Main lens consists of 3,3 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 523 000 tgrade0.80% Cu, 2.44%Zn,30.19 g/t Ag, and2.2 g/t Au he richer satellite lens (180 000 t) is part of the same volcanic stem and resulted from a resurgence of hydrothermal activity. ructure played a role in the final geometry of the deposits but did not eatly affect the volcanogenic and stratabound nature of the lens. Total production since the start of operations in 1985 amounts to 58 000 t and is restricted to the Main lens. Improve the safety and reduce the cost of longwall entry support. Approach Replace the conventional wood cribbing with stronger, non-rotting and lower cost cribbing made of steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete. How It Works Conventional concrete can suddenly fail under excessive compression loads, but adding steel fibers to the concrete, before it is mixed with water, changes the failure mode to a gradual and controlled failure characteristic similar to wood. A system for making SFR concrete crib blocks was designed and developed (or use in constructing walls and cribs to support coal mine roofs. The SFR concrete cribbing is stronger and stiffer than wood, and avoids wood's disadvantages of: flammability, deterioration under chemical or bacteriological attack, methane generation, and relatively high cost. Use of SFR concrete also allows freer movement of miners, equipment, and ventilation air, because much less volume of SFR concrete is required than wood for a given amount of support, and because the roof-to-floor closure is greatly reduced by the stiffer supports.

Experimental results indicate that wet cyclones could be effectively used for the preliminary classification of the tested synthetic abrasive materials, thus supplementing the currently used sedimentation method. An empirical formula is also proposed on the basis of the test data to calculate the particle size of separation. One of the basic operations in the abrasive industry is the classification of the crushed and ground materials into different sized products. The relatively coarse grains, plus 325 mesh, are commonly sized by dry screening with satisfactory results. On the other hand, however, the currently used grading tank, for classifying grains finer than 325 mesh, is intermittent. Consequently, it is difficult to operate efficiently and keep pace with erratic market requirements. Little success was made in an attempt to substitute air settling and continuous hydraulic settling for the grading tank, because size specifications1 for abrasive powders are very stringent and difficult to meet. Finally, a wet cyclone was chosen for experimentation. Even though wet cyclones have not been extensively used in the classification of abrasives; however, their performance as a classifier has been verified by Driessen2,4 on coal, McCarrel5 with manganese, and Herkenhoff6,7 on iron ore. The Bureau of Mines investigated separating copper-nickel mattes to recover a copper-rich fraction suitable for processing by conventional copper metallurgical processes and a nickel-rich fraction suitable for processing in a hydrometallurgical nickel circuit. Distribution of cobalt and precious metals between the copper and nickel fractions was also determined. A matte containing a nominal 65 pct Cu, 9 pct Ni, 4 pct Fe, and 20 pct S was separated into a copper fraction that comprised 80 pct of the matte weight and contained 70 pct Cu and <1.5 pct Ni, plus a nickel fraction that contained 40 pct Ni and 30 pct Cu. Recoveries of copper and nickel into their respective fractions were 90 pct and 87 pct. These results were obtained in a laboratory flotation cell at a matte grind of 90 pct minus 500 mesh and a pH of 12.4, using 1.7 pounds DPG (diphenylguanidine) per ton of matte as collector and frother. Magnetic separation was used to remove metallic iron-nickel alloy from the copper fractions. Distribution of cobalt was about 70 pct to the nickel fraction and 30 pct to the copper fraction. Silver reported predominately to the copper fraction, while Au, Pt, and Pd were essentially entirely recovered in the nickel fraction.

The full utilization of tunnel boring machines for excavation in medium hard and hard rock has been limited by insufficient knowledge of rock behavior under the action of mechanical cutters. An understanding of factors affecting the rock removal process will permit: (1) the more efficient design of tunneling machines, (2) the prediction of boring performance from geologic data and cores taken from the proposed tunnel alignment, and (3) an improved excavation rate, thus a lower tunneling cost.. The Colorado School of Mines, under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, is studying the effects of a number of parameters in regard to tunnel boring using both full and small scale laboratory tests, analyzing field boring performance and comparing the laboratory and field data. Results indicate: (1) the field boring performance can be reproduced in the laboratory, (2) the optimum spacing of cutters or optimum spacing to penetration ratios may be found in laboratory testing, (3) it is promising to use small core samples and laboratory testing to predict field machine performance and (4) effect of joints on boring rate is significant and should be included in predicting tunnel boreability.

MERLIN, the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy&apos;s corporate geographic information system, provides ready access to all georeferenced data held by the department. Its aim is to provide a consistent, current, statewide coverage of timely information to assist in tenures management, exploration targeting and competing land use decision-making. Initially developed in 1988 and under continual enhancement since then, its functionality is the result of on-going close consultation with a wide range of departmental clients and potential users. A true geographic information system, MERLIN maintains both graphical data with linked textual information on a wide range of features of interest. The proprietary software products Arclnfo and Oracle are used to hold the graphics and attribute information respectively. Access to information is provided by a specially designed graphical user interface programed in-house. Hardcopy output of graphics displays including related attribute data as well as detailed reports of textual information can be retrieved at any departmental office. MERLIN is a network of computer systems which link each of the Department&apos;s regional offices and head office in Brisbane. The current state of exploration and mining is maintained by departmental officers processing tenure applications, transactions and dealings directly into the system. Data entered at regional offices are transferred overnight to head office to up-date central records and maintain a currency of data statewide as at the close of business the previous day. Through MERLIN the Department of Minerals and Energy now offers a much streamlined tenures management service as well as access to information about past exploration and mining, Queensland&apos;s mineral and energy occurrences and resources, and up-to-date information on the state&apos;s geology including maps, boreholes, geophysical surveys and field observations. This paper discusses the effect of the computer revolution on Penn State&apos;s facilities and personnel and provides a short history of computer applications in mining in the Department of Mineral Engineering. The computer era began in 1955 at Penn State when the engineering faculty built a sizeable vacuum-tube computer. Since that time, a succession of machines has introduced many changes and presented a variety of opportunities and problems to the university&apos;s computer personnel and to the community of users. This paper discusses both the changes in computers and the accompanying problems that occur in a university computing environment. A historical summary of computer simulation programs developed within the Department of Mineral Engineering is presented along with information on computer applications in ventilation, statistics, mathematical programming, coal preparation, and other areas. Finally, computer plans for the future are discussed in terms of the develop- ments in the Charles B. Manula Computer Library and in terms of ongoing and future computer-related research projects.

Mining work is a high-risk operatation under a special environment. It is affected by space, lighting, noise, vibration, dust, air pollution, etc as well as coal seam conditions, complicated geology construction, combustion of coal, gas, coal dust, etc. Factors which affects safety production are numerous, eg natural conditions, technical equipment level, producersÆ and managersÆ qualities. It is a complex system engineering to ensure mining safety and high efficiency. Among the ideology, methods and measures of safety management are the most important factors besides safety technology. Mine productive environment is a main problem that affects minerÆs work as far as safety and health are concerned. Combining ChinaÆs mine productive environment situation and using human ergonomics theory, this paper explores a series of measures and suggestions as to how to reinforce safety management, how to build up the safety management ideology, how to improve the mine production environment, how to decrease coal mine accidents, and how to ensure mining safety and high efficiency.
