The phase transformation of bayan obo ore with high concentration of iron and calcium was reduced at temperatures no more than 1000℃ were investigated in this study. The samples with insufficient carbon were treated at the temperature using a vertical furnace with a thermogravimetry (TG). The mineral phases and content were examined using Xray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) respectively. The complex phases of bayan obo ore transformed to some simple phases after treated with different content of carbon at the same temperature for 10 hours. The result of XRD、 XRF and TG showed that the reduction degree of Fe3O4 phase formation varied with the temperature and the carbon content of bayan obo ore.

Lead single crystals have been deformed in tension over the temperature range of 4.2°K to the melting point. Changes in flow stress resulting from temperature cycling and strain rate cycling have been measured as a function of temperature for crystals of different orientations and purity. It was found that the flow stress ratio, after correcting for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus, decreased progressively with temperature above approximately 0.5Tm. The activation energy calculated from the high-temperature portion of the curve was found to be markedly higher than that of self-diffusion. For single glide crystals, the corrected flow stress showed an increase above 0.5 Tm before decreasitzg with temperature. This increase is attributed to static recovery occurrittg during temperature cycling. THE temperature dependence of the flow stress, based on temperature cycling and strain rate cycling, has been extensively investigated,' and on the basis of these results dislocation models of the work-hardening process have been proposed. In general, the flow stress is divided into two parts, ts, the short-range interaction term, which is only effective at low temperatures and which decreases with increasing temperature, and TG, the long-range stress term, which is independent of temperature after allowing for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus. The observations demonstrating that tG/µ is independent of temperature were generally carried out at low temperatures to minimize recovery effects. Several investigations have been reported on flow stress measurements at high temperatures2"5 which demonstrate that TG/µ does not remain constant at temperatures above 0.5Tm (where Tm is the melting temperature of the material in OK). Specifically, Hirsch and warrington3 carried out temperature cycling tests at two strain rates on single and polycrystalline aluminum up to 0.8 Tm and on polycrystalline copper. For aluminum they found that the flow stress ratio (the flow stress at temperature T2, divided by the flow stress at the reference temperature T1 in one temperature cycle) dropped progressively with increasing temperature above 0.5Tm. From the slopes of the high-temperature portions of the curves, they determined an activation energy for the deformation process of 1.6 ev (at best) which they considered was in agreement with the activation energy of self-diffusion, 1.35 ev. Calculations of the activation volume demonstrated that the deformation was not controlled by dislocation climb. They proposed a mechanism in which the rate-controlling process at high temperatures was due to the rate of move- ment of vacancies away from jogs, i.e., that of self-diffusion. Results of Lucke and Buhler4 on single crystals of aluminum confirmed this conclusion. They measured the critical resolved shear stress of aluminum over a wide range of temperature and strain rates. They found that the temperature dependence of the critical resolved shear stress was similar to that of the flow stress ratio, as determined by Hirsch and Warrington, and from their data calculated an activation energy for high-temperature deformation of 1.35 ev identical to that of self-diffusion. More recently Gallagher5 has carried out a detailed investigation of the temperature dependence of the flow stress ratio of copper, silver, and gold. In all cases, he found that the flow stress ratio, after adjusting for the shear modulus temperature change, drops at high temperatures. The activation energies he determined were found to be appreciably higher than the activation energy of self-diffusion of the material being considered. The flow stress ratio was found to be dependent on the orientation of the material, and, in addition, an anomalous increase in the flow stress ratio for copper, oriented for single glide, was observed above 0.5Tm. The purpose of the present investigation was to measure the critical resolved shear stress, the flow stress ratio, and the strain rate sensitivity of lead, primarily as a function of temperature. The results should indicate whether, following Lucke and Buhler, the critical resolved shear stress of lead has the same temperature dependence as the flow stress, and, following Hirsch and Warrington, whether the activation energy for high-temperature deformation in lead is the same as that of self-diffusion. Lead deforms as a normal fee material,6'7 is available in high-purity form, can readily be grown as single crystals, and, for this investigation, has the very considerable advantage of having a low melting point, 327°C. The observations of the critical resolved shear stress of lead have been published elsewhere.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure was essentially the same as that used in the critical resolved shear stress measurements.' Single crystals of 99.999 pct (59) and 99.9999 pct (69) lead were deformed in tension with a table-model Instron in a silicone oil bath above room temperatures and in a cooled methyl alcohol or liquid-nitrogen bath below room temperatures. The test specimens were rectangular in section, 0.65 by 0.33 cm, and had a 5-cm gage length. The specimens were grown as single crystals with tapered ends, which fitted into matched tapered grips for testing. To obtain the flow stress between two temperatures, specimens were first deformed approximately 1.0 pct at the higher temperature. The test was then stopped, the load relaxed, the oil bath removed without disturbing the specimen, the grips and specimen cooled with a fan and then immersed in liquid nitro-

INFACON XI has no doubt earned the distinction as the first such Congress in India. This prestigious occasion could become a reality of a long cherished dream of the Indian Ferroalloy Producers, consumers and ex-porters. The International Committee of Ferro Alloys (ICFA), South Africa, the august body for organising INFACON, every three years, could be convinced by the Indian Ferro Alloy Producers? Association (IFAPA) to award INFACON (XI) to India. This Congresss, organized by IFAPA, has opened a window for the Ferroalloy Community of India, the up-coming Asian Tiger, to register their strength and weakness to the world forum with the principal objectives of evolving long and short-term optimum road-maps for development. It is to be reckoned that India is poised to be a steel giant by 2020 when it is envisaged that the steel production may reach a level of 120 million tons of which significant proportion has to be in the categories of alloy and special steels, requiring standard and high grade ferroalloys. Keeping the above objective in view, the theme of this Congress has been rightfully designed as ?Innovations in Ferro Alloy Industry.? This Congress has also earned a distinction of more than eighty papers, finally selected for inclusion in the Proceedings. More than 100 internationally and nationally reputed experts in the field of ferroalloys (technology and manufacturing practices as well as world scenario) have been approached for critical review of abstracts and selection for the proceedings. It needs to be mentioned without the cooperation received from ICFA the high standard of INFACON could not have been assured. The papers are suitably grouped under seventeen heads, starting from world situation to production and operation followed by present and future technologies and finally to modelling and simulation. It is a Herculean task to the Technical Committee to fit these papers in proper sequence. The Commit-tee members kept no stone unturned to ensure the cogency with the subject matters and at the same timekeeping the flexibility of interests of the participant, especially in the context of three parallel sessions. The Proceedings containing only refereed papers of high quality, will serve the entire gamut of ferroalloy industry and will also highlight the present status of concerned countries. The areas of attention to make the industries globally competitive and at the same time laying emphasis on the prevailing practices, will help the industry leaders to formulate an appropriate global approach. Following the break-through step, instilled by INFACON XI, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in searchable electronic CD-ROM format. I, as the Chairman of the Technical Committee would like to express thanks and high appreciation to all the Committee members for their whole hearted efforts in all respects without which it would not have been possible to complete these proceedings in the scheduled time. The present paper may be considered complementary to an earlier contribution on the same subject by F. R. Archibald and C. F. Jackson.1 It is particularly concerned with engineering and technological aspects of the operations at the Harleyville Alumina Plant during its period of operation from January 1945 to July 1946. The plant was built for and operated by Ancor Corporation, at Harleyville, South Carolina, as part of the government sponsored wartime program related to alumina production from domestic raw materials. The main purpose of the program was to secure technical and engineering data, based on actual plant experience, that might serve as a foundation for large scale production of alumina from raw materials other than bauxite. The Harleyville plant was directed specifically to treatment of clays found in very extensive deposits in the Carolinas and Georgia using the lime-sinter process developed by Ancor Corporation. It is considered that the purpose stated above has been served and this paper is to record and discuss some of the more important findings. The main factor in location of the plant at Harleyville was the presence in that locality of a rather remarkable deposit of high calcium limestone. The clay mining operation was centered near Aiken, S. C., and although a rail haul of ninety miles was involved there were, at the time, factors favorable to the Harleyville location offsetting, in part, the cost of transportation of clay, There are, no doubt, locations in the general area where clay and limestone deposits may be found in closer proximity hut they had not been proven up when the project was undertaken. Availability of power from the Santee-Copper development whose high tension line skirted the Property; ready access to rail and highway transportation; the promise, realized in actuality, of ample supply of soft water; and availability of labor supply were other factors of importance. Moreover, the general area has the decided advantage, for this type of operation, of a mild climate. Construction was begun in August 1943, and although stopped for a time priding review of the general situation that fall, it was resumed, albeit with less urgency, and substantially completed by the end of 1944. The total capital cost was approximately $3,460,000 The first alumina was turned out in April 1945 and from then until the plant was closed down in July 1946, the operations followed a succession of periods of production alternating with periods in which minor alterations were made in conformity with experience. Steady improvement was made and at the time Operations were discontinued it was considered that experience and the necessary engineering were in shape for removal of the remaining bottlenecks and a somewhat major revision in one section of the plant. AS a basis for further progress in several branches of metallurgy, particularly the study of physical properties of solid solutions and the kinetics of solid-solid reactions, a more complete understanding of the structure of solid solutions and the nature of the metallic bond is- necessary. Any investigation contributing to this understanding should be of primary interest to the metallurgist. Since the metallic bond is characteristic of an assemblage of atoms, it can be studied only where this assemblage exists. One of the most promising approaches to this study of the interactions in metals is through the general problem of binary metallic solutions. Although crystal structures of many solid metallic solutions have been determined and solubility limits for many systems are given in phase diagram studies, progress beyond this is irregular. Electromotive force and vapor pressure determinations have provided thermodynamic activity data for small concentration and temperature ranges in the amalgams and a few other systems.' In two systems, however, copper-zinc and iron-carbon, data are available for the calculation of activities over wide ranges of temperature and concentration. This activity data for the brass system is summarized in the preceding paper.= A detailed study of the solubility and distribution of carbon in iron is given by Smith and Darken.3 Their treatment of interaction energies is applicable only to dilute interstitial solutions. The objectives here will be to derive from activity gats given in the previous paper for the brasses and structural considerations as much new and detailed information as possible about the interactions between copper and zinc in metallic solid solution and the effect of these interactions in determining the short range structure of the equilibrium phases; that is, we shall investigate the energy of interaction between pairs of atoms of the same and different kinds, the deviations of the distribution of nearest neighbors from complete randomness, and show that the conclusions found are consistent with the observed behavior of the brass system. The method of treatment is fairly general for substitutional metallic solid solutions and will be applied to other systems. The determination of vapor pressures of the components of alloy systems is being undertaken in this laboratory to supply more data for this purpose. The information obtained from solid solutions may be extended by careful analogy to liquids as long as the metallic type of bonding is preserved. Since it will be necessary to employ the language of thermodynamics, a brief summary defining the terms used extensively in solution theory is given below. This paper was prepared at the request of Capt. A. F. Lucas, Chairman of the Institute's Committee on Petroleum and Gas, as a preliminary discussion of the fuel oils which are used-in the Southwest, giving their composition, uses, prices, etc. Should it afterward be found desirable, these observations may be extended over a larger area. In this connection, J suggest that samples of all kinds of fuel oils, including various tars, from all over the country, be collected and sent to some testing laboratory for examination. We would be glad to extend the facilities of the laboratory of the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology, at the University of Texas, for this purpose, and to do the work free of all expenses. After such examinations are made and the results classified and studied, it would be possible to suggest specifications under which fuel oils should be purchased, and to arrive at some conclusions respecting the uniformity of such specifications, with due allowance for climatic and other more or less local conditions. While such specifications do not now depart from a common standard anything like as much as specifications for illuminating oils do, yet there are discrepancies which should not exist. Some of these discrepancies are of lessening importance, due to the pronounced tendency to distill every crude oil that can be distilled with profit, and to send residues into the market for fuel oil. Residues from the refineries are of a more uniform chemical composition and physical nature than many of the crude oils that go direct into the fuel market. The lower flash-point oils are disappearing from the fuel trade and in place of them we are getting oils that do not flash below 220° F., nor burn under 320° F. In the Southwest, it has not been long since we had fuel oils that flashed at as low as 110° F., and the average flash point over a considerable period was 151° F. Now we are using oil that flashes at about 30° lower than the former burning point, which was 256° F. In other words, the flash point has risen, on the average, 100°; and the burning point about 75°.

Laboortory apparatus has been devised which permits study of the displacement of oil from cores by water and by gas. The cores used contained interstitial brine as well as oil. Experiments were run to determine the comparative effect of varying the properties of the fluids used. No great effect was noted on the maximum displacement achieved. This observation made it unnecessary in initial work to use fluids in their exact reservoir conditions. Consequently, the displacements were run at near-atmospheric pressure in Pyrex glass equipment, using stripped crude oils. Introduction and Theory The chief object of this work has been to determine the efficiency of gas and water as primary agents for displacing oil from reservoir rock under laboratory conditions in which capillary phenomena were predominant. To this end the maximum displacement of oil from cores has been ascertained. This maximum displacement may not be equal to the maximum displacement from a reservoir; but it will be a close approxirnation to it sometimes, and other times the laboratory information will be useful in reservoir engineering predictions. It is] believed that the laboratory experimental maximum represents the upper limit for the reservoir recovery. The experiments were carried out by obtaining cores of interest from the reservoir, and filling the pores with interstitial brine and oil with the restored state tech- nique.1 Then the oil was displaced from the core as described later, either by brine from below, or by gas from above. The former type of displacement suggests analogy to production by water drive, but not to water flooding, for reasons discussed below. The latter type of displacement is believed to simulate production by gas cap displacement. The displacements were performed by what may be termed the capillary-pressure method. The cores are placed in capillary contact with an oil-wetted membrane which has very small pores (about I micron in diameter). Pores of this size will transmit oil but Prevent the Passage of gas or water, unless the Pressures used are higher than the capillary Pressures employed in this work. Accordingly, use of the membrane makes it possible to apply a capillary pressure differential between the displacing phase and the oil in the core. AS in the displacement of brine toward that condition of oil and water distribution existing originally in the reservoir,' it may not always be desirable to reduce the oil saturation in this experiment to an absolute minimum. With reservoirs having small productive closure, it is preferable to evaluate and use a displacing pressure no higher than the capillary pressure, Ap, which will ultimately become available for displacement in the reservoir. Generation of Waves by storms, and the transformation of waves in shallow water by local bottom topography are briefly reviewed. A detailed description of water motion in waves explains the nature and distribution of wave forces. A numerical example dealing with forces and moments against vertical piles summarizes the principles involved. Introduction The oil industry is moving into the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The design and construction of offshore drilling rigs present a number of difficult problems, among them problems involving the action of waves on fixed and floating structures. This paper deals with our present knowledge of ocean waves as it pertains to these problems, and the principles involved in computing wave forces against fixed structures. It is hoped that the more difficult case pertaining to floating structures can be discussed at a later time. None of the engincering aspects of the problem are entered upon in this paper, yet an understanding of the principles presented here should be helpful in the solution of practical problems. Waves are capable of exerting almost unbelievable forces. During a gale, waves at the harbor entrance of Amsterdam Canal in Holland lifted a 20-ton concrete block, which was resting on the bottom in 12ft of water, and deposited it on top of a pier which was 5 ft above the high water mark. At Wick Breakwater in Scotland, a mass of large stones in cement and bound together with iron rods, weighing 1350 tons, was broken loose and moved bodily! But one need not go to Holland or Scotland to find evidence of damage that waves are capable of inflicting (Fig I and 2). What is the mechanism by which waves are capable of exerting such enormous forces? To answer this, we must consider briefly the nature of wave motion. When a wind blows over a wheat field, waves appear to travel across the field, whereas the wheat itself remains rooted, slowly swinging back and forth. Similarly, in the case of water waves, the waveform travels swiftly over the water surface, whereas the water particles oscillate back and forth, but scarcely advance. The speed of the wave form is called wave velocity, the speed of the water particles is called orbital velocity. This fundamental difference between wave velocity and orbital velocity was already recognized by Leonardo da Vinci. Orbital velocity is generally much slower than wave velocity except for a breaking wave, a case which is of particular importance in the application to engineering problems. In the summer of 1950, Bureau of Mines engineers visited a number of coal-preparation plants in western Europe and Great Britain to obtain information on European and British coal-cleaning and froth-flotation practices. In view of the growing importance of froth flotation as a process for cleaning fine sizes of coal, it was felt that such data and information would be of value in this country, for, although froth flotation has been adopted for use in a few of our plants, it has not as yet been employed as extensively as in British and European preparation plants. Many of the important coal beds in western Europe, especially in the Ruhr Valley of Germany and in the Dutch coal-mining region of Limburg, Netherlands, are very friable, with the result that the run-of-mine product contains a large proportion of the sizes too fine to be treated successfully by any other method than froth flotation. Furthermore, the relatively high cost of producing coal from these beds has for many years made it economically feasible and desirable to treat the fines by froth flotation, especially in the coking-coal fields.

This present paper deals with the fundamental study of the separation of fine cassiterite and quartz by liquid-liquid extraction using iso-octane as an oil phase, dodecylamine acetate (DAA) as a collector, and sodium chloride as a depressant. With regard to the distribution of fine cassiterite and quartz between oil and aqueous phases, the effect of DAA has been investigated in terms of pH, DAA and NaCl concentrations, zeta potential, and adsorption density. From the results of the experimental work, a maximum recovery of cassiterite in the oil phase was obtained with pH around 6.0, DAA concentration of 1.0 x 10-5 mole/litre, and NaCl addition of 0.1 mole/litre. In these conditions of liquid-liquid extraction, most of the fine quartz remained in the aqueous phase. Thus it was found that NaCI was an effective depressant for fine quartz under optimum conditions. A series of separation tests by liquid-liquid extraction was then conducted for the mixed samples (6.0 per cent Sn) of cassiterite and quartz. By a single separating process, the per cent of recovery of cassiterite in the oil phase was about 92 per cent with a grade of 27 per cent Sn. The same results could also be obtained by using kerosene in place of iso-octane as the oil phase.

Results of the application of the micro-gravity method in predicting rock bursts and rock mass deformations are discussed. Research was done in the Daisy black coal mine, Upper Silesia, Poland, during 1979-1980. At that time, microgravity investigations helped increase the safety of coalbed exploitation in progress. During the first stage of exploitation, a mining shock of 107 J energy was predicted in a region where 40 miners worked.

The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow-level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of δ34 SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë; n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). Vein quartz from the mineralised zone at Waitangi yields δ18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). Fluid inclusion studies indicate a homogenisation temperature range of 190¦ - 296¦C and salinity range of 0.2 - 3.0 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Similar temperature and salinity ranges have been recorded for the other gold deposits in the Coromandel Peninsula. PIXE (Proton Induced X-ray Emission) analysis revealed that the Waitangi ore fluids have 1090 - 2700 ppm K (average 1600), 145 - 205 ppm Ca (average 180), 80 - 100 ppm Mn (average 90), and 80 - 200 ppm Fe (average 120) but no detectable Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Pb and Bi (only one fluid inclusion contains 28 ppm Zn). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source (either directly, or by leaching of igneous sulphides). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1 - 5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in δ18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Mixing of ore fluids with convective ground water is a likely mechanism for gold deposition in a shallow environment for the Waitangi vein system and there is also lack of fluid inclusion evidence (eg liquid-rich and vapour-rich inclusions in the same growth zone) for boiling of ore fluids. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that δ18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

Research workers from the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives at the Mont Chateau Lodge, Morgantown, W. Va., on May 30-31, 1973, to discuss the current status of methane control in eastern U.S. coal mines. The opening remarks, the eight technical presentations, and the discussions of the members of a government-industry panel are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the control of methane in coal mines. In addition, an introduction has been added to present the background of work in this field.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a ælook behindÆ the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act 2002. The more important policy considerations in the development of the Act are described along with a summary of the main provisions of the Act. The Act, together with supporting regulations and other instruments will formalise the use of risk management as a necessary discipline in the systematic management of occupational health and safety. It must be recognised that the purpose of this paper is not to provide a legal interpretation of the legislation nor is it to provide legal advice. Rather, the main purpose is to provide some indication of the underlying intent behind the Act.

The energy systems of the future will be highly renewable. The flexibility that is consequently required can be provided with many options, the main ones being energy storage, transmission reinforcement, and demand side management. The role of the latter is explored for the copper industry, using the scheduling of maintenance services as an example of Solar-Paced Design - the coupling of energy demand with solar resource availability. We used a linear energy optimization model to define the minimum-cost configuration for a fully renewable energy system of a copper concentration plant under different scenarios for the scheduling of maintenance services. For the case we studied, (total) costs were 4% lower when the maintenance was scheduled in winter. We expect that exploring the potential of such Solar-Paced Design in the copper industry will allow new potentials for a more cost-effective full renewable energy supply of this critical industry. INTRODUCTION The mitigation of climate change requires a worldwide transformation of the energy system by the significant expansion of renewable energies and the electrification of various sectors and processes (Teske et al., 2015)(International Energy Agency IEA, 2018). Moreover, considering the decreasing costs of renewable energy technologies and the intensive use required to deliver the goals in the Paris Agreement, we can expect to have highly renewable energy systems in the near future. However, to rebuild and expand our energy systems, we need certain materials, including copper. Also, energy systems based on renewables are more copper-intensive than conventional ones (Kleijn, van der Voet, Kramer, van Oers, & van der Giesen, 2011). The mineral industry, in turn, needs clean energy to achieve a better environmental performance (e.g. solar energy for copper production (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017)) and to avoid negative secondary effects induced by the strong expansion of clean technologies. But there is something else the minerals industry can offer in this bi-directional relation with energy systems.
