William B. Phillips, Birmingham, Ala.: The questions raised by Messrs. Wilkens and Nitze are in the highest degree interesting to owners of low-grade iron-ores, aizd no less so to blast-furnace managers. If it can be shown that ores heretofore considered worthless can be brought within the limit of economic use, many large and readily accessible deposits may come into market on the one hand, while on the other the possible increase in the output of the furnace per ton of ore used will prove of advantage to the iron-maker. It cannot, of course, be claimed that this process has been employed on a working-scale with respect to iron-ores, and in so far as concerns results on a large scale no one is any wiser than his fellow. Granting that the results obtained in an experimental way (and certainly the experiments were conducted with a great deal of care) can be attained in practice, we would still be facing the question, what it would cost to get them. In the absence of any specific data, we have to fall back on general principles, helped along, as far as possible, by indications afforded by the experiments. I must confess that as regards the Clinton ores, which I have studied to some extent, I am not sanguine of making a ton of 53 to 54 per cent. concentrates from less than 1.75 tons of 40 per cent. raw ore. It may be possible to get the iron in the heads to 56 to 57 per cent., but the lesser richness of the middlings will probably reduce this to 53 to 54 per cent. in the salable stuff. As the authors remark, it is not worth while to discuss the concentration of the better grades of " soft" Clinton ore; for the price at which they are now delivered at the furnaces, and the comparatively limited amount now remaining, render their concentration unadvisable. The new Bunker Hill slag-treatment plant, designed ior, a capacity of 300 to 400 tons of hot slag per day, was "blown in" April 5, 1943. In the ensuing I5-months period, 157,530 tons of slag was processed, with an average recovery of over go per cent of the zinc and practically all of the lead contained. In addition to this high metal recovery, utilization of the waste heat in the gas and fume venting, the process has enabled the generation of 231,376 tons of steam at 250-lb, gauge. Over the first six months opcration the volume of slag treated averaged somewhat under 300 tons per day. Reclaimed dump slag made up only about 1 5 per cent of the plant feed. In October 1943, preparations for the smelting of additional tonnages of dump slag were completed and the plant capacity was increased to an average of about 420 tons of slag per day. During the nine-months interval since that date, monthly averages of 450 toils per operating day have been maintained several times. The new plant (Fig. I) is constructed in close proximity to blast-furnace operations. The fuming furnace and other necessary equipment are housed in an eastward extension of the existing blast-furnace building. Beyond this housed extension the dust-laden gas is conveyed about the perimeter of a large rectangle formed by the flues, cooling towers and baghouses. The course of a 10-ft. balloon flue, which transports the fuming furnace gas, describes the west and south perimeters. This flue connects with a set of cooling towers located at the southeast comer. The flue and cooling-tower system serving the deleading kiln constitute the north side and the two baghouses, serving the kiln and furnace operations, -border the east side. From these baghouses the several discharge gas flows are come biped and conveyed in to the rectangle, being vented to atmosphere by means of a fan through a centrally located zoo-ft. brick stack. In general, the plant design and operation follow quite closely that dictated by experience gained in years of slag-fuming practice by the Anaconda Copper Mining Go., at East Helena, Mont., and the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd., at Trail, B.C., and more recently by the International Smelting and Refining Co. at Toocle, Utah. : Fuming operations at the East Helena and the Tooele plants are more or less identical. Trail practice differs chiefly in the methods employed for the storage of the hot feed slag and in the methods utilized for the handling and cooling of the fuming furnace gas. The new Bunker Hill fuming plant closely follows Trail procedure in the treatment of the furnace discharge gas while East Hclcna methods have been adopted for the storage of feed slag.

A RATHER detailed description of the entire plant and leaching process was given in a paper recently presented to the Institute,1 so this paper will cover briefly only the crushing practice of the New Cornelia Copper Co. for the year, 1918. The ore, which is mined by steam shovels and loaded in side-dump cars, passes through two crushing plants. These crushing plants were constructed to crush the ore required by a leaching plant of 5000 tons daily, capacity, during a crushing period of 16 hours. The primary plant reduces to less than 3 in. (76 mm.) and the secondary plant, to ¼ in. (6.35 mm.), which is sufficiently fine for satisfactory percolation of solution through the ore in the leaching tanks, and to give good extraction. The ore is then conveyed to the leaching tanks by a system of 28-in.. (71-cm.) belt conveyors. On the way to the leaching tanks, it passes through an automatic sampling plant, where a 1-per cent. sample is taken. From the primary crushing plant, the ore is conveyed by two 36-in. (91-cm.) belt conveyors to a 10,000-ton steel storage bin, with a reinforced-concrete flat bottom. The ore discharges from the bottom of this bin onto four 20-in. belt conveyors, which deliver it to the four units of crushers in the secondary crushing plant. There is no storage bin between the mine and the primary crushing plant. The ore breaks very coarse, is very hard, and contains a great many boulders, some as large as 4 ½ by 4 1/2 by 10 ft. (1.3 by 1.3 by 3 m.). Jams form in the bowl of the coarse crusher in the primary crushing plant, as a consequence, and are freed by means of an immense steel hook operated from a 40-ton electric traveling crane.

INTRODUCTION Today more tunnels are being bored by mechanical means in igneuus and metemorphic rocks (i.e. "hard" rocks) than ever before, and there is reason to believe that this trend will continue in the future. Because of this, there is an increasing demand fur stronger, more powerful machines and fur cutters that are capable of handling the high loads and abrasive rock conditions that often accompany hard rock tunneling. Tunnel boring machines ("TM's") built today, therefure, generally have higher thrust and torque capabilities than those built in the past, and they are equipped with the largest cutters and rings now available. The recent experience in hard rock tunneling has demunstrated that TBMs can be both efficient and ecunumical under such conditions, and that acceptable performance rates can be achieved in all but the hardest rock. In spite of this success, it is believed that improvements in buth the cost of boring and in performance rates can still be made through mudificatiuns in the existing kerf cutting system. Some impruvements in TBM performance under hard rock conditions, fur example, have already been made thruugh the development of constant section rings that maintain a constant edge width and, therefore, a constant level of performance as they wear. Effective methods for determining grade and reserves of pegmatites in advance of mining have been developed in recent years. When intensive work began on the economic geology of pegmatites during the early years of World War II, it was widely believed that grade and reserves could be estimated only in a most general way. The literature indicated that not all pegmatite deposits are unpredictable, but statements emphasizing unpredictability and irregularity seem to have been more widely accepted. Many standard references reflect the prevailing opinion that minerals are unsystematic in their occurrence in pegmatites. Pegmatites have been de- scribed as "notorious for their irregular structure," and minerals within pegmatites as "irregularly distributed," "irregularly disseminated,'' of "erratic occurrence," "proverbially erratic in distribution," "characterized by extreme irregularity in size and distribution of the essential minerals, and variety and proportion of the accessory minerals, and "spotty."

The relationships between mineral deposits and various plate margin mechanisms are examined under the constraints of radiogenic isotopes and other geochemical indicators. It seems like1 y that: (1) deposits of the spreading ridge association are fairly ubiquitious through most of geologic history and can be recognized by the lithologic assemblage and primitive lead isotope ratios; (2) most metals in the island arc association are not derived entirely from a subducting oceanic plate, and have a partly continental affinity; (3) subduction beneath a continental plate generates ores which are derived either from the downgoing plate or from the lower crust; (4) the heating of a continental plate by thickening or by mantle plumes may develop a metallogenic province involving extraction of metals from the curst; (5) rifts and grabens developing thick sections of marine sediments with evaporites may be the locus of base metal mineralization by movement of reducing brine solutions resulting from diagenesis and bacterial reduction of sulfates

This paper describes the method of mining a steeply pitching anthracite seam on a heavy pitch in the Orchard vein in No. 1 Tunnel of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co. The Orchard vein in the Neaquehoning district has a thickness of about 15 ft. on the level of the gangway, which is sufficient thickness for the gangway to be driven full width in coal. Above the gangway, the vein becomes thinner and near the surface is about 8 it. thick. The coal is of good hard quality and carries a fairly good roof. The pitch of the vein is between 65" and 70". Usually the breast-and-pillar method has been employed in the mining of the steeply pitching veins in this section. This method produced good results as far as the mining of the breast was concerned but the recovery of the pillar was difficult as to full extraction and expensive as regards costs. To recover these pillars after the breasts were driven, three methods were commonly employed; they were known as the pillar-breast method, pillar-skipping method, and pillar-chute method. The pillar-breast method consisted in putting a battery in one corner of the pillar (Fig. I), coupling the manways A and B of the two adjacent breasts for two or three lengths ahead of the working face of the pillar being cut, and working the pillar as a breast. This method was used by the more skilled miners of the earlier days but has practically been abandoned. A slight variation of this method is used to some extent. In this case, the pillars are left wider than ordinarily and of sufficient width for the full-width breast to be driven in and a small pillar left on each side of the pillar breast between it and the regular breasts. With the completion of the "pillar breast," the ribs are drilled full of holes, loaded, and fired. In the pillar-skipping method (Fig. 2), the middle breast of three is not driven through and is drawn empty while the outside and inside breasts are kept full. A personal dust monitor (PDM) was developed to measure respirable coal mine dust mass to provide accurate exposure data at the end of a work shift. Additionally, the new monitor continuously displays near-real-time dust exposure data during the shift. The PDM uses a tapered-element oscillating microbalance to measure the mass of dust deposited on a filter and continually displays the cumulative exposure concentration data. The accuracy and precision of the instrument was determined by comparison to gravimetric filter samplers in the laboratory and in four mines. Laboratory results with different coal types and size distributions showed that there is a 95% confidence that the individual PDM measurements were within ±25% of the reference measurements. Mine test results indicate that data taken with adjacent PDM and reference samplers are indistinguishable. The technology proved durable enough to successfully measure 108 shifts of data out of 115 attempts in the mines. Under these specific test conditions, the PDM demonstrated that it was convenient to wear, robust, provided accurate data, provided timely data that could be used to prevent overexposure, and was easy to use.

THE investigation of the hot-working properties of metals and alloys furnishes a problem which has been attacked in many ways. Tensile, impact and hardness tests on heated specimens have furnished interesting data, but in most cases either the tests are difficult to make or the results hard to translate into terms of practical value. Some investigators have used the drop hammer to advantage. It furnishes a rapid and simple method of comparing the plasticity of metals at elevated temperatures. The indications obtained by its use are of value only in so far as their significance is understood and they can be intelligently used to predict the behavior of a given metal under given hot-working conditions. The work reported here was undertaken not only to add-something to the existing volume of such data but also to contribute to our understanding of the results. Doerinckel and Trockels1 used cylindrical specimens and determined the work required to reduce the specimen to one-half the original height. Ellis2 studied the effect of constitution on the malleability of steel at high temperature. His method and that of Kent3 were similar to the one used in the present work. The tests described by Kent were made on samples of tin, zinc, aluminum, copper, lead, 70:30 and 60:40 brasses, with and without a small quantity of lead. He concluded that the test would "indicate whether a material can be forged at a given temperature without cracking." This interpretation must be used with caution. While it is probably true within limits, one must consider the severity of the forging operation. Again, it will not apply strictly to forms of hot working other than forging. For instance, an alloy running 61.0 per cent. copper, 3.25 per cent. lead, remainder zinc, will crack badly in the test, yet it is extruded commercially. The results of scale-up studies on a continuous, multistage horizontal mixer-settler extractor are presented. The chemical and mechanical system involves the separation of lanthanum from a mixture of rare earth chlorides using di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid as the solvent and dilute HCl as a scrub solution in a bench scale extractor. Each stage has a hold-up of 2.6 l. A single stage unit is utilized for scale- up studies. Results are obtained on four sizes of geometrically similar units, the largest being six times the volume of the original bench size. A unit operations technique is chosen so that mixing and settling can be examined independently. Variables examined include type of continuous phase, flow rate of inlet streams, and power input to the mixer. Inlet flow-rate ratios are kept constant for all tests. TWO potential methods of unbaffled pump-mixer scale-up are explored; the maintenance of constant impeller tip speed and constant power input. For the settler, the previously successful method of basing design on constant flow-rate per unit cross- sectional area is used.

This chapter deals with the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA] concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals are defined as the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals that possess a fiberlike structure capable of being woven into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps, made about 430 BC, with in- combustible wicks of Carpathian flax. The Ro- mans used asbestos as cremation clothes to con- serve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (Lanza, 19381. Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Both wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages. Today, with the use of modern technology, asbestos products have been greatly exploited. The asbestos output has increased over a hundredfold in the past 70 years. World production has jumped from 454 t/y (500 stpy) in 1900 to 4.5 Mt/y (5 million stpy) in 1978. An increase in health problems for asbestos workers accompanied this increased usage. However, it was not until the modern era that the association of asbestos with chronic respiratory disease was rediscovered. Reports were published at the turn of the century documenting the effects of asbestos exposure on textile workers. One such report in 1907 by H.M. Montague Murray described the post mortem findings on a 34-year- old carding machine operator. Murray de- scribed the lungs as showing extensive diffuse pulmonary fibrosis spicules of asbestos. Subsequently, more reports of pulmonary fibrosis following inhalation of asbestos were published, including an epidemiological study of asbestos miners in 1930 (Merewether and Price, 1930), at Thetford, Que., Canada. This study took place at the mine 52 years after large-scale mining of asbestos had begun. But, the cancer- producing potential of asbestos was not established until 1949 when a report by Merewether in England described an excess of cancer of the lung and pleura [the lining of the lungs) among individuals dying from asbestosis (Merewether, 1949). In the past decade much attention has been focused on asbestosis, mesothelioma, and bronchogenic carcinoma, as the three major biological effects associated with asbestos ex- posure. Parenchymal and pleural asbestosis is a fibrosis in the substance of the lung with thickening and often calcification of the membranes lining the thoracic cavity. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the membranes lining the thoracic or abdominal cavities, and bronchogenic carcinoma is a cancer of the lung tissue itself. These diseases occur in various degrees and combinations. The severity and occurrence of these biological effects are directly influenced by conditions such as dose response relationships, intensity of exposure, duration of exposure, lapse of time since initial exposure, and cigarette smoking. Numerous studies indicate that the relationship between these conditions and the incidence of disease is proportional. Congress has recently concluded (Congressional Record, 1979) that, "exposure to asbestos fibers has been identified as significantly in- creasing the incidence of cancer and other severe or fatal diseases such as abestosis." Congress conveys its concerns for the safety and health of the nation's miners through the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 in which it gave MSHA the authority to set safe

Sedimentary deposits such as sandstone are formed by the aggregation of cemented sand grains. Phosphates and laterite present similar aggregation of mineral grains. Grains and cement have different mineralogy and chemical characteristics. During size reduction through crushing or coarse grinding, the rocks are crumbled. Mineral grains and cement are then liberated, and the produced size distribution reflects their ?natural size distribution?. Mathematical modelling of these concomitant effects of crumbling and mineral liberation necessitates a specific material description and the adaptation of the commonly used theories of breakage kinetics and population balance. The coarse particles are mainly agglomerates made of mineral grains and cement particles whereas the fine particles are grains and cement with a natural grain size distribution. The population balance between the different particle size and particle types during size reduction takes into account the breakage rate and the progeny size distribution. The breakage rate can be described by a simple probability function or by a first order kinetics whereas the progeny size distribution is described by a breakage matrix. The model proposed here considers that the agglomerates will produce other agglomerated particles, liberated grains and cement particles; the two latter having their natural size distribution. The liberated grains and cement particles are subject to size reduction and follow the most commonly used theory of breakage. The present paper describes the theoretical approach of the concomitant crumbling and liberation effects. The application to a mathematical model for the cone crusher is presented. This is a brief introduction of a sewer pipeline constructed with a pipe jacking method in combination with a 1 200 mm finished inner diameter tunnel boring machine developed for the first time in Japan. The pipeline is located under a national highway running through a densely built urban area and is 185.7 m long and 2.9 m to 3.7 m deep from the ground surface. The geological features along the pipeline show mostly slate and partly silt. The pipeline was constructed with a newly developed multi-application type tunnel boring machine equiped with a fluid transport system. The construction consisted of tunneling by a tunnel boring machine followed by pipe jacking operations. The excavated materials were dis- charged off the tunnel by a fluid transport System.

Mother Earth has had a long life extending over two billion years, during which time she has changed from a mass of incandescent gases to her present form, exhibiting a density stratification from the extremely tenuous gases of the stratosphere to the heavy central nickeliron core. Man is now mining all the principal divisions of Mother Earth except the centrosphere. Nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and other rarer gases are being recovered from the air; magnesium, bromium, potash, borates, and other salts from lakes and seas; brines, medicinal mineral waters, and great quantities of water for domestic and industrial uses from surface and subsurface reservoirs; and, from the rocky crust, many minerals and fuels for our present industrial civilization as well as plants and animals for food and shelter. Productivity of soil is influenced both positively and negatively by man. There is some cause to bewail what may be considered a wasteful influence of men on soil. The general situation is bad in spots but not hopeless. The passing of large areas of fertile land in some areas is merely to be noted and not to be mourned. These lands could not have been used without decrease in their fertility. The productivity factor is affected by human activities. Many soils in the eastern and southern states are far richer and more productive now than they were at any previous time. Arctic soils are not productive

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in the lead and zinc industries, as an efficient and highly flexible pyrometallurgical reactor with accompanying excellent environmental performance. For the processing of lead and zinc bearing feed materials twenty one (21) Ausmelt furnaces are now in operation, under design or under construction. With recent increases in the value of both lead and zinc and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of resources, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources as well as metal containing residues has substantially increased. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values from such sources. This has for example culminated in Ausmelt?s commitment to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This paper describes Ausmelt?s recent developments in the fields of lead and zinc processing, as well as further investigations into new processing areas, including the direct smelting of zinc concentrates. Ausmelt?s TSL Technology can now be regarded as Best Available Technology (BAT) for metal production.

No question in the metallurgical chemistry of the present day seems to be so difficult to agree upon as the determination of phosphorus in iron and steel. To my knowledge, there are at present at least three different methods in use in the iron laboratories of the United States, viz.: The citric acid method, the molybdate-magnesia method, and the direct molybdate method,—the last-named method having been lately adopted. Each of these methods has its advocates, who take every pains to prove its advantages, and the incorrectness of the others; and much has been written for the purpose of securing the use of a standard method—as yet, however, without any result. There is no doubt, or ought to be none, that each of these methods gives correct results, when it is carefully conducted and every precaution is taken. But it is not only correct results that we want nowa-days. The demand is great, also, for getting results in the shortest possible time. I think it has been sufficiently proved that the direct molybdate method, the weighing of the precipitate, answers well in both respects. Being a pupil of Prof. Eggertz, I have myself used his method for years until quite recently, as it is described by Mr. Troilius in our Transactions, vol. x., p. 166 (but with some slight modifications), and I can safely say that the results of this method agree well with those of the molybdate-magnesia method. There has been a recent surge of interest in existing and proposed institutional mechanisms that would govern the exploration and disposal of nonfuel minerals within the U.S. ocean jurisdiction. The Minerals Management service, a bureau of the Interior Department, has begun to promulgate regulations to allow the exploration and leasing of lands for nonfuel mineral development on the outer Continental Shelf of the united States. At the same time, a bill has been introduced in the U.S. Congress that would create a new ?national seabed? and authorize the allocation of exploration licenses for marine nonfuel minerals. Because only limited efforts have been devoted to the discovery of marine nonfuels in areas beyond the territorial sea of the United States (and no production has occurred), exploration and the generation of resource information are two primary foci of these regulatory and legislative efforts. Generally, minerals exploration activities (and associated R&D on exploration and production technologies) are eligible for the same institutional incentives available for other industrial efforts, including tax preferences for research and experimentation, patent protection, small business innovation research grants, and even the new leniency in antitrust rules

PART I.-OUTLINE OF INVESTIGATION, DESCRIPTION OF METHODS AND MATERIAL Previous Investigation of the Influence of Stress on Corrosion IN 1917 Haigh1 presented evidence that under simultaneous corrosion and cyclic stress metals may fail at lower stresses than if the corrosion is prior to the cyclic stress. In 1926 the author, while investigating the cooling effect of water on the fatigue resistance of metals, found that under these conditions steel specimens fail at stresses far below the endurance limit.2 (By "endurance limit" is here meant the fatigue limit obtained with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and corrosive influences.) This led to an investigation (at the Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md.) of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. This investigation maybe divided into three parts. The first part was a general survey of the conditions necessary to cause complete failure under corrosion and cyclic stress of relatively high frequency. The entire process by which metals fail under these conditions was-called "corrosion-fatigue." "Corrosion-fatigue limits" for a large number of metals were determined and the relationships of these limits to chemical composition, heat treatment and physical properties were established. The conclusion was reached that corrosion-fatigue is due to the accelerating influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Results of this part of the investigation were presented in five papers.2-6 The second part of the investigation was a preliminary study of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Each experiment was conducted in two stages. The first was a corrosion stage in which the specimen was corroded under cyclic stress; the second was a fatigue stage, in which the previously corroded specimen was tested (without further corrosion) to determine its fatigue limit.
