La cuenca se encuentra situada entre los centros poblados de Borja-Saramiriza-Puerto América de Madre de Dios, cuyas condiciones desarrollan posibilidades de deposición de oro aluvial. El estudio prospectivo fue empleado por personal técnico de la gerencia de exploraciones de Centromin Perú.S.A en el que obtuvieron 26 muestras referenciales, encontrando 100 000 hectáreas de interés prospectivo por oro fluvial.

Open-pit mining on the iron range has been in a stage of transition for several years from the standpoint of mechanization. The most radical change in open-pit mining methods was started in open-pit haulage in 1937 with the departure from the then standard system of locomotive and car transportation and the advent of the heavy duty truck as a replacement. The initial use of trucks was followed shortly by the first installation of a conveyor belt for open-pit ore haulage. The growth of the combination of trucks for gathering units delivering to a conveyor system for transportation out of the pit, has been rapid and this transition appears to have reached a peak in 1949 with locomotives and cars now being used in only a few of the largest open pits. One point which must be considered, if we assume that the maximum equipment change- over point has been reached, is that the largest pits have probably passed their peak of production. Future ore replacement must come from smaller pits wherein the truck conveyor system has done an outstanding job.

"In view of the increasing importance of processing lean ores as potential future resources, efforts are being made worldwide to develop suitable technologies for the recovery of both nonferrous, base and precious metals. There are various types of low grade ores present in many countries. Gradually, the mineral reserves for production of metals have undergone complex changes with regards to their grades and particularly the physical and chemical properties of the minerals to be separated from each other. So, there is a need for new processing routes or the upgrading of existing technologies to recover metal values that are otherwise unutilized. Accordingly, an overview of the different types of mineral resources and economical processes, based on ore horizons, consumption of energy and reagents and environmental concerns, is made in this paper. In addition, the paper provides a summary of metallurgical and engineering challenges to be overcome when implementing new technologies and concepts with regard to base metal extraction and sulphur removal efficiency.IntroductionLow grade multimetal complex sulfide ores are likely to become an importance source for nonferrous as well as precious metals in the near future. The principle metallic minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, tetrahedrite, boulangerite and cassiterite. Such ores are located throughout the world as multi-pocketed reserves which have present complex challenges with regard to their grades and particularly the physical and chemical properties of the minerals to be separated from each other. Their compositions can vary widely from one deposit to another and even from one location to another in the same deposit, and this poses a problem for the recovering metals present therein. Successful aqueous processing of complex sulphide ores depends on the composition and mineralogy of the raw materials and on their leaching behaviour."

The first systematic attempt of the National Museum to gather material representing the economic geology and metallurgy of the country was made in connection with the Centennial Exhibition. The department may be considered as having originated then, althongh it was not formally inaugurated until December, 1882. Previous to the Centennial, all the illustrations of economic geology had been included in the mineral collection, and the illustrations of metallurgy were so very few that they had also been included with the minerals. When the museum began its collections for the Centennial, the subject of the mineral resources of tile United States was placed in the hands of Professor Wm. P. Blake, who was eminently fitted to undertake the work by his experience at various international exhibitions and his extensive acquaintance with the mining industry of the country. Professor Blake prepared a broad and exhaustive plan for this purpose, and the very large collection shown at Philadelphia was well calculated to set forth the vast mineral wealth of the country. The history of the department proper may conveniently be divided into three periods : first, the formative period, during which the Centennial material was mainly administered upon, ending Jnly 1, 1884, with the beginning of the preparation for the New Orleans Exposition; second, the New Orleans Exposition period, from July 1, 1884, to June 30, 1887, during which the collections for the New Orleans Exposition were made, exhibited at New Orleans, returned to Washington, and installed permanently in the museum; third, the southwest-court period, from July 1, 1887, to October 1, 1889, during which the collections were arranged in the southwest court of the museum.

The 20th Century saw changes in the mining and metallurgical industry not only technically but also in social and environmental expectations. As projects continue to become larger to maintain competitiveness the visibility of their potential impacts raise concerns among many groups. The need for transparency, openness and early engagement of all parties are fundamental to assure success. An equally important task is to anticipate the standards that will be required to meet society?s expectations in the 21st Century. Historical Observations The mining industry of the 18 and 19th Century was dominated by opportunistic Companies and individuals with an entrepreneurial flair for adventure and risk. Those who promoted had the chance of great reward, while those willing to risk their life were assured a short one for their efforts because of the physical and health dangers that abounded. Disregarding conditions miners rewards were high even in those days, with an average Cornish miner known to be earning two pound a month in 1800. Coal and iron ore mines were driven by the needs of the industrial revolution and were the first to embark on larger scale output. Base metal mines were smaller as industrial demands for their use did not start to expand greatly till the late 19th Century. Electrification, the automobile and the 1st World War drove the increased demand for a variety of metals. Early mines were foul smelling and dusty and what was taken from below ground left spoil piles around the surface countryside after recovery of the coal or concentrate. The image of barren blackened hills is one that is easily conjured up and is an environmental legacy that still lives with us today.

FLUXES, in general, may be classified according to their use as soldering, foundry or casting, and metallurgical and the chemistry of their action follows quite closely this division. The term foundry or casting fluxes, as used here, refers to the substances added to molten metals, preparatory to casting into molds or ingots, with the object of removing small amounts of impurities that have been introduced in handling or melting the metal, which was placed in a fair state of purity by the previous refining or metallurgical processes. The sources of these impurities are the oxide coating on the surface of the ingots, material extracted or mechanically removed from the crucible or furnace wall, and those formed by the reaction of the molten metal with the heating gases or furnace atmosphere. As commonly used, the term fluxes is applied to such materials as ammonium chloride, zinc chloride, salt, borax, and boric oxide. A second class of materials, usually called deoxidizers, includes substances such as metallic phosphides, sub-oxides, carbides, and bo-rides, that reduce the metallic oxides present in the metal. A third class includes various compounds that arc molten and non-volatile at the temperature of the molten metal and are used primarily to protect the surface of the metal from the action of the furnace or exterior atmosphere; to this class belong such mixtures as lime and fluorspar, lime and soda ash, various minerals, etc. In some cases these protective layers may act in a manner similar to the metallurgical fluxes and dissolve or unite with the oxide impurities of the metal, but as generally employed this latter action is negligible since there is little opportunity for the coverings to come into contact with more than the surface of the metal, and hence they arc without action on the body of the molten mass. The use of fluxes is the result of factory experience and tradition, but an extensive study has not been made of the chemical and physical actions that occur or the effects of these actions on the properties of the metal. Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively constant, longwall production levels during the last five years have increased significantly. In the United States, longwall mining now accounts for approximately 50% of all underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust-compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face-ventilation system and the advancement of face-ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, examined several basic principles of the long wall face-ventilation system and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face-ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face-ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face airflow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels of using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the face air¬flow and to manage face airflow to effectively minimize dust exposure to face workers. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980s and 1990s, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

"A set of state-of-the-art methods have been applied to study ultrafine particles and nanoscale species arising on mineral surfaces upon milling, interaction with flotation reagents, and leaching of base metal sulfide ores in order to gain insights into interfacial mechanisms. The fine fractions produced by ball milling of a Pb-Zn Gorevsky ore and four Cu-Ni sulfide ores studied with laser diffraction, dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential measurement, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), SEM, TEM and other techniques. The particle size distributions had, aside from the peaks at 20-60 ?m, maxima near 1-2 ?m; the flotation was considerably suppressed when the yield of positively charged ultrafine particles approached tenths % (several kg per ton). High-energy XPS and X-ray absorption spectra revealed that sulfide minerals depleted in metal in air and aqueous solutions were composed of outer “polysulfide” layers, strata with disulfide species, and heavily defective underlayers, and “passivation” was explained by stability of the metal-deficit structures. Dixanthogen at pyrite and copper-activated sphalerite, dixanthogen and then cuprous xanthate on chalcopyrite, and chemisorbed xanthate at galena were specified as the main interfacial products using cryo-XPS of fast-frozen flotation slurries. The particle size, zeta-potential and behavior of colloids of Cu and Pb xanthates and dixanthogens were largely determined by the initial ratio of a cation and collector; the properties of copper xanthate nanoparticles were also affected by incorporated dixanthogen (about 15 wt.%). Submicrometer gas domains of 3-8 nm in height and “hydrophobic” forces upon the probe retraction were found on xanthate-treated minerals using atomic force microscopy and spectroscopy; their impact on flotation is briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONInterfacial phenomena play a key role in flotation, leaching, water purification and related environmental processes. The mineral processing and extraction of metal from sulfide ores commonly involves milling the ore, which produces, along with the particles of 20 µm to 100 µm, mineral entities ranging from micrometer to submicrometer and nanometer scale. Furthermore, ultrafine particles of flotation reagents, products of metal sulfide oxidation, and so on may form spontaneously and accumulate in production water, flotation froth, deposit on mineral surfaces, affecting the flotation performance, and then enter waste waters, mine and natural drainage, polluting soils, surface- and ground waters (Miettinen et al., 2010; Wang et al., 2014). The efficiency of flotation and hydrometallurgical recovery of values, environmental issues are crucially dependent on the state of mineral surfaces. Particularly, it is generally accepted that the surface non-stoichiometry of sulfide minerals induced by oxidation and leaching should affect their hydrophobicity and reactivity, including so-called “passivation”, but the nature of such surface layers are still a matter of controversy (see, for example, Holmes and Crundwell, 2013). Another phenomenon attracting rapidly growing interest in several areas is low-dimensional gas species (“nanobubbles”) at hydrophobic surfaces that may play a decisive role in particle-bubble attachment in flotation but remains scarcely investigated up to now (Xing et al., 2017). Here, we survey our recent results on the abovementioned problems applying a series of rather new methods and approaches; more details can be found in refs. Karacharov et al., 2016; Mikhlin et al., 2015; 2016; 2016a; 2016b; 2016c; 2016d; 2017; 2017a; Vorobyev et al., 2017."

Provide an accurate, simple, alternative means of evaluating the safety of mine electrical ground systems which has little or no negative impact on mine productivity. The Traditional Evaluation Method The Code of Federal Regulations requires all mines to safely ground their power systems to earth. Effective earth grounding reduces shock hazards to mine workers operating electrical equipment, protects equipment from damage by voltage transients, and provides a means of detecting and locating ground faults. Once an earth ground bed has been constructed, its level of resistance has traditionally been used to gauge the safety of the entire grounding system. Bed resistance measurements are normally performed using a ?fall of potential? technique with a current return electrode placed at a remote location, If the resistance measured is acceptably low, then the bed is assumed safe.

The Henderson Mill has operated over a wide range of production rates, feed grades, manpower levels and recovery targets since start-up in 1976. Henderson Mill personnel, both management and hourly, have successfully responded to these changes by not only maintaining unit costs, but by actually decreasing unit costs. Methods of cost reduction have included conventional austerity programs, innovative technological improvements and creative work schedules. This paper addresses both maintenance and operating cost reductions and efficiency improvements.

A computer model for long-term production scheduling is presented. By combination of different operations research algorithms it has been possible to design a system which is able to solve difficult long-term planning problems. The practical application of the model by a west-german hard coal mine is shown. It is proven that the EDP-model provides substantial support to the planning engineer by solving complex optimization problems.

We evaluated a new process for remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD). The process treats ARD with intermittently fluidized beds of granular limestone maintained within a continuous flow reactor pressurized with CO2. Tests were performed over a thirty day period at the Toby Creek mine drainage treatment plant, Elk County, Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Equipment performance was established at operating pressures of 0,34,82, and 117 kPa using an ARD flow of 227 L/min. The ARD had the following characteristics: pH, 3.1; temperature, 10 OC; dissolved oxygen, 6.4 mg/L; acidity, 260 mg/5; total iron, 21 mg/L; aluminum, 22 mg/L; manganese, 7.5 mg/L; and conductivity, 1400 uS/cm. In all cases tested, processed ARD was net alkaline with mean pH and alkalinities of 6.7 and 59 mg/L at a CO2 pressure of 0 kPa, 6.6 and 158 mg/L at 34 kPa, 7.4 and 240 mg/L at 82 kPa, and 7.4 and 290 mg/L at 117 kPa Processed ARD alkalinities were correlated to the settled bed depth (p<0.001) and CO2 pressure (p<0.001). Iron, aluminum, and manganese removal efficiencies of 96%, 99%, and 5%, respectively, were achieved with filtration following treatment. No indications of metal hydroxide precipitation or armoring of the limestone were observed. The surplus alkalinity established at 82 kPa was successful in treating an equivalent of 1136 L/min (fivefold dilution) of the combined three ARD streams entering the Toby Creek Plant. This side-stream capability provides savings in treatment unit scale as well as flexibility in treatment effect. The capability of the system to handle higher influent acidity was tested by elevating the acidity to 5000 mg/L with sulfuric acid. Net alkaline effluent was produced, indicating applicability of the process to highly acidic ARD.

Transitioning from diesel-powered loading and hauling machinery to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) responds to the need for deepening underground mines as regulations become tighter. When using BEVs, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions can be eliminated, and the energy required for the machines is used more effectively. Unlike their diesel counterparts, which are refueled, BEV loading and hauling machines — specifically, load haul dump (LHD) machines — can use battery swapping. This brings additional aspects to the operation that need to be considered, which have not yet been studied extensively. This study used discrete event simulation (DES) to analyze how the different numbers of BEV LHDs affect queueing and productivity when using different numbers of batteries and different swapping times in an underground block cave mine. The results identified the formation of working groups, where the machines swapped their batteries concurrently within each group, and their relation to the queueing time. Additionally, the minimum number of batteries per machine was identified to maximize productivity while minimizing queueing time. This study demonstrates DES as a powerful tool to assess and analyze conceptual systems and identify their underlying structures, which can enhance the deployment of BEV LHDs in underground block cave mine operations.

THE following short paper on the Blair Athol coal-field will no doubt have a twofold interest to members from the fact that its main seam, known as the &quot;Big Seam&quot; of a maximum thickness of 91 ft without a band, is unique, being probably the thickestseam of high-grade clean coal yet known, and also because of the interesting problem it presents the colliery engineer-viz., which system of mining is the best to secure the highest economical extraction.Location - Blair Athol is a mining township in Central Queensland, situated at an altitude of about 1100 ft. above sea-level at the end of a branch railway line 74, miles from Emerald, on the Main Central Western line, and 240 miles by rail from Rockhampton.Geology - The coal-measures appear to lie in a shallow basin of about four or five square miles in area, surrounded on all sides by slates and schists, which are overlaid oh three sides by alluvial deposits of up to 150 ft. in thickness, and on the fourth by a thick basalt bed, as yet unproved, some miles beyond which the auriferous slates outcrop. These alluvial deposits have been largely worked in years past and gave high gold returns, the chief diggings being Clermont and Macdonald&apos;s Flats in the south, the Springs and Black Ridge in the north-east, and Yankee Creek and others on the west. The surface of the coal-fields may be described as unbroken, but undulating, with gentle southerly dip, the watercourses opening out into wide flats. WITHIN the past thirty years the United States has been involved in two tragic, vicious, and costly world wars. To make the world safe for democracy was the reason given for our participation, but the confusion and misunderstanding that prevails all over the world today suggests that war is not the proper approach to the attainment of that utopia. These conflicts were conceived and prosecuted by nations far advanced in civilization and culture. Their best manhood was sacrificed, a staggering tax burden was saddled on their peoples, huge financial losses were incurred, destruction of property was appalling, and cultural and peaceful scientific advancement received a setback that may require centuries to retrieve. Therefore, some basis is established for the conclusion that progress in the past fifty years has been most outstanding in the development of instruments used for death and destruction, and that progress in this direction between the two World Wars would indicate that the next war will go far toward total destruction of world civilization.

It must be evident to almost everyone by now that a massive transformation is occurring in our iron ore economy. Its equal has been seen only once before in the entire history of the North American steel industry, and not even once before within the personal memory of anyone now engaged in it. The lone precedent was the beginning of ore shipments from the Mesabi Range in October, 1892, which was before anyone still short of normal retirement age had been born. No younger observer, in the steel industry or in any other, has ever known anything else than that the Lake Superior region-in which the Mesabi is the giant-has supplied all but a small fraction of total North American blast furnace ore for the use of three generations of steelmakers. Directly or indirectly, it was the discovery of the Mesabi which created most of the prime and satellite companies that have since come to prominence in the various ore-consuming phases, and it was the same discovery that had broader effects on the entire spectrum of their technologies than any other single event that has ever happened since, although the advent of byproduct coke is a close runnerup. It affected every sector of the national economy and was a keystone in making our standard of living what it is today.

Discharge cones for large Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) and Autogenous Grinding (AG) mills are subjected to high wear as significant volumes of ground ore and slurry exit the mill. With the larger diameter mills of 32ft to 40ft in size becoming the norm, very high, concentrated wear is highlighting the limitations of conventional discharge cones and frequent changes are subsequently required. This paper outlines the advances made in the design of the Bullnose discharge cone. Superior wear materials to increase wear life over conventional rubber or chrome-moly steel discharge cones and the introduction of key design features to reduce reline times and improve fit and safety during installation, offer significant opportunities for the mill operator. Collated from multiple case studies, the wear data and reline history from 2004 to present clearly illustrate the way in which superior component longevity has reduced the frequency of relines over the life of the product to increase mill availability and effectively increase the tonnes milled in a period.
