The Mineral Resources Research Center at the University of Minnesota has recently installed a QEM*SEM system (Quantitative E.valuation of Materials using Scanning Electron Microscopy) to aid in detailed mineralogical evaluation of potential mineral resource developments in Minnesota and to provide services to the North American mineral industry. A primary application for the unit is to serve the Minnesota taconite industry by providing mineralogical analysis of ores and concentrator products. Minnesota taconite ores contain fine-grained magnetite in a quartz matrix. The ores undergo several size-reduction/magnetic-separation steps to produce a final concentrate with approximately 75% passing 325 mesh and containing about 5% gangue. The paper describes a typical taconite concentrator flowsheet and reports some preliminary results of the applications of QEM*SEM particle image maps and cumulative yield liberation data to samples from selected points in the concentrator circuit.

ALTHOUGH the refining period of the heat is generally defined A as starting after the charge has been completely melted, it may more properly be considered as beginning with the first efforts to facilitate the shaping up of the slag and the making of corrective additions for the control of slag or metal composition. Such actions may be initiated during the latter half of the lime boil. The early part of the refining period may, then, in essence overlap the latter part of the melting period. The primary aims of the refining period are: (1) to reduce phosphorus and sulfur from the steel bath to levels safely below the maximum contents specified; (2) to eliminate carbon to a specified level as rapidly as possible and still allow time for proper conditioning of the slag and attainment of the necessary bath temperature; and (3) to have the heat ready for tapping or furnace deoxidation, with slag in the proper physical and chemical condition, and with carbon and oxygen contents and the temperature of the steel at the proper levels for the composition and grade of steel being produced. The particular conditions that fulfill these aims are distinctly different, depending upon whether the steel is to be finished according to fully killed semikilled, or rimming practice and also depending upon the carbon range specified. Regardless of the type of charging practice employed, the object of the refining period is to produce repeatedly the desired finishing and tapping conditions for the grade of steel being produced. The variations and proportions of raw materials used in the charge may cause some variations in the degree of control required during refining, but not in the method of control. The refining period can therefore be discussed from a viewpoint largely independent of charging and melting practice. FIRE-DAMP is a mixture of methane with other inert gases or combustible gases. The inert gases in question are carbonic acid, water vapor, nitrogen, etc. The combustible gases are hydrogen, ethane, etc. The study of the properties of fire-damp, therefore, becomes a study of the properties of methane and the influence on its properties of the different gases we have mentioned. Characteristic Properties of Methane 1. Respirability.-Methane being a paraffin is characterized by its weak chemical affinities. From the physiological, point of view one could substitute it for nitrogen of the air at least momentarily, without experiencing any difficulty in breathing the mixture consisting of 21 per cent. 02 + 79 per cent. CH4. I .have tried this on myself, making the gas exhaled -from the lungs burn subsequently in a Bunsen burner.1 From the chemical point of view, this weak affinity permits the gas to be burned in certain circumstances with hydrogen and oxide of carbon in an oxygenated mixture, with the result that the last two gases achieve only a fractional combustion. This practice has been utilized with success in the methods of analysis which I have perfected and which I describe later in this paper. 2. Retardation of Flashing Point.-A characteristic property of methane is its retardation of flashing point, noted by Davy in 1816 and studied by Mallard and Le Chatelier in 1883.2 Taffanel and Le Floch have recently confirmed these results.3 Let us recall the nature of this retardation:

Presented below is a review of how the objectives, as outlined in the statement of the problem, were achieved. 1. Methods of evaluating the performance of grounding systems must be described. These methods are the subject of Chapter III. 2. Field trips to operating mines should be undertaken, and a cri¬tique of their grounding systems made upon the basis of obser¬vation and the application of the above techniques. An analysis of field trip data, along with practical recommendations, is in¬cluded in Chapter IV, while a complete review of all field trips is given in Appendix I. 3. Because of their thoroughness, present coal mine regulations should be evaluated, and their applicability to open-pit environ¬ments appraised. This has been done in consultation with governmental agency, manufacturing, operating mine, and consult¬ing engineers. As stated in Chapter IV, insight gained through field observations has served to amplify and extend the base of knowledge from which the recommendations were made. 4. The results of these investigations should lead to suggested Federal standards. Such recommendations comprise Appendix II. In addition, several important factors, which are discussed in Chapter IV, were brought to light as a direct result of the field research. 5. Multiple seam mining has been studied and writ- ten about extensively in the past and in the latest review of the subject in 1956 David Stemple covered it exhaustively. The present discussion has to do with only one phase of the problem-"The effects on upper seams when the lower seams have been mined first." The study presented here is based on observations made in mining operations in southern West Virginia and adjoining areas of Virginia and Kentucky during the past 43 years. These observations are largely confined to the Pocahontas coalfields of southern West Virginia which have, since 1883, produced well over one billion tons of coal from an area of about 300 sq miles and where multiple seam mining has been active, or is now active, at more than 40 operations. The observations and conclusions as to the effects on upper seams when lower seams have previously been mined are therefore related only to the local coalfields in the area of the three states named but I believe that they can be applied generally to other coalfields.

INTRODUCTORY A COMPLETE list of the elements as given for 1915 includes 18 that melt above 1,700° C. There does not exist one complete thermal equilibrium diagram for any pair of these 18 elements. Several of these elements have been combined, in relatively small proportions, with metals of lower melting point: e.g., tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium, in steels, or with nickel and cobalt; but of this refractory group, platinum is the only one that has been extensively studied in this connection. When one considers that, with few exceptions, the industries have made use of alloys to the exclusion of pure .metals, it is reasonable to expect that alloys of this refractory group will invade fields in which the pure metals have found little application. The past neglect of this class of metals has, no doubt, been partly due to the rarity of some of them, for even though alloys of very valuable properties should be developed, their cost, unless in exceptional applications, would be prohibitive. There is also a well-founded reluctance to undertake research involving very high temperatures which, in the case of most of these elements, must be accompanied by an inert atmosphere as well. This combination of high temperatures* and control of atmosphere within the heating chamber of any furnace of present design is a difficult problem. It is the purpose of this paper to give results,1 of an investigation of one binary series of this group, in which methods were employed that avoided the usual difficulties accompanying high-temperature alloy investigation.

Deep-sea mineral resources explored by Korea are categorized into mainly three types; manganese nodules, manganese crusts and seafloor massive sulfides. Manganese nodules have high Pt enrichment factors (EF=400, ore/crust ratios). Rare earth oxides (REO) contents from manganese nodules show from 0.037 to 0.302 REO% with mean value of 0.12%. Te and Pt are highly enriched in manganese crusts, displaying EFs of 10800 and 150, respectively. REO contents of manganese crusts are slightly richer than manganese nodules (0.013~0.387 REO%, average = 0.18 REO%). Seafloor massive sulfides deposits are featured by outstanding values of Se (EF=1300) well as In (EF=110). Au (0.8~26.3 g/t) and Ag (0.9~348.0 g/t) are another enrichment metals in SMS, although they belong to precious metals. Rare earth elements of SMS are meaningless as resources but REE are increasing in sediments overlying SMS. Heavy rare earth elements (HREE) from both manganese nodules and manganese crusts are typically higher than ones from land-based REE deposits. HREO grade and their portions of manganese nodules as well as manganese crusts are greatly similar to ion-absorbed type REE deposits in China, implying REE of subsea mineral resources are absorbed in nodules and crusts. Rare metals including REE could be exploited as by-production of commodities such like Ni, Co, Cu and so on. Rare metal resources from manganese nodules and manganese crusts are featured by low-grade and large scale deposits. Therefore rare metals in subsea mineral resources will add its economic values.

Controlar o perfil térmico dos fornos de uma planta de pelotização é essencial para se garantir a qualidade das pelotas e manter a competitividade da produção. A medição online de variáveis-chave é restrita devido às condições da planta ou limitações tecnológicas, fazendo-se necessário a utilização de um modelo matemático (Soft Sensor) para estimar essas variáveis e, então, exercer maior controle sobre a qualidade e custos do processo. Através de balanços térmico e mássico, o modelo é capaz de predizer o perfil térmico das pelotas e as perdas, térmicas e mássicas, além de simular mudanças no processo e implicações no consumo de combustível. Com o modelo, observou-se a possibilidade de redução de 5% de perda térmica, resultando em redução de 2% do consumo de combustível, devido à melhora da recuperação de calor da zona 2 do resfriador para a pré-queima 1 do forno grelha. Many hardened steels contain significant quantities of retained austenite even in cases where the carbon and alloy contents are low. In fact austenite has been detected in plain carbon steels containing as little as 0.50 pct carbon.1 Although the austenite may not be visible metallographically it causes definite dilatometric and magnetic effects during subsequent tempering or sub-atmospheric coo1ing.l,2,3 Therefore if the reactions which hardened steels undergo during later treatment are to be understood in quantitative fashion it is most essential to have some kind of absolute analysis for the austenite content in hardened steels. Once this analysis has been made, the austenite transformations can be followed precisely by observing such sensitive phenomena as changes in length or in magnetization but the latter techniques can only determine differences in the amount of retained austenite and usually an independent method must be found to put these differences on an absolute basis. In certain instances the microscope can be used advantageously to determine the percentage of retained austenite. The quenched sample is tempered to "darken" the martensite with minimum decomposition of the coexisting austenite, and then is polished and etched in the usual fashion. If the austenite is clearly distinguishable from the tempered martensite and other possible constituents its volume percentage can be measured quantitatively by point counting or lineal analysis.4 Such microscopic methods, however, depend on the etch being sufficiently discriminatory. In fairly coarse structures, if the austenite content is greater than 10-15 pct, there is probably little smearing of the etch, and point counting or lineal analysis seems to be quite accurate. On the other hand if the structure is difficult to resolve, as in commercially treated fine-grained . steels which contain less than 10-15 pct retained austenite, the latter may be completely obliterated by the dark etching martensite or it may appear disproportionately low as the interfaces between the two constituents become difficult to distinguish. Another disadvantage of the metallographic method is the need for "darkening" the martensite and hence the determination cannot be applied to as-hardened steels. The required tempering may spoil the structure for other tests or may even remove a small part of the austenite which is being sought. X ray methods hold more promise for covering the range under 15 pct retained austenite. Although austenite and martensite in the hardened steel may be chemically identical, their crystal structures and lattice parameters differ, and the intensity of an austenite diffraction line is some continuous function of the percentage of re-

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis have been used to study the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold in partially oxidized high grade gold ore from the Carlin sediment-hosted deposit. Rounded.gold particles have been observed that range in size from 0.03 to 0.1 p.m (300 to 1000 A) in diameter. The gold is associated with maghemite h-Fep3l and a K-Al-Si-bearing phase that is suspected to be illite. Detailed descriptions of gold and its mineral associations in 'Carlin-type' gold deposits are critical not only to understanding the mechanism of fluid transport and precipitation of gold, but also to developing improved metallurgical techniques for the recovery of gold from refractory ore. Direct observation of gold in unoxidized ore is rare due to its relatively high degree of dissemination and low average bulk concentration which averages 9 ppm according to Radtke (1). Hausen and Kerr (2) observed 1 to 5 p.m grains of gold directly in oxidized ore but these microscopically visible particles account for only a small percentage of gold present in the ore. The samples used in this study were selected from individual beds of high grade, partially oxidized ore (4.55 oz/ton or 156 ppm gold) that were collected in the Main pit of the Carlin mine. The samples were collected from several thinly laminated carbonate micrite beds within the top 50 meters of the Roberts Mountains Formation. The carbonate micrite has been altered by hydrothermal fluids to a calcite-absent, moderately silicified rock referred to as alteration zone #3 by Bakken and Einaudi (3). Based on petrographic and SEM studies, the samples contain carbonaceous matter, and both pyrite and iron oxide pseudomorphs after pyrite. The oxidation of pyrite may be a pro-duct of deep weathering, in which case limited remobilization of gold may have occurred. TEM sections of the rock were prepared by first embedding small chips in low viscosity epoxy. The epoxy blocks were cut with a Reichert Ultracut E ultramicrotome, producing thin sections less than 0.1 p.m thick. The sections were examined with a Phil-lips 400ST TEM at 120 keV in both imaging and selected area diffraction modes. Native golci*was easily detected in TEM bright field images due to the large electron density contrast between gold and all other phases that are present (Figs. 1 and 2), Gold was positively identified with high spatial resolution EDX analysis in the transmission electron microscope, although selected area diffraction of individual grains was not successful EDX analyses of the platy and massive minerals immediately surrounding the gold particles typically indicate the presence of Si, AI, K, and Fe, However, the d-spacings derived from selected area diffraction of these polycrystalline masses (as, for example, in Fig. 2) give an exact match for maghemite. As a result, there is no diffraction information to identify the K-AI-Si-bearing phase(s). The lack of a diffraction pattern could be due to either electron beam damage or to a poorly crystalline phase(s).

In August, 1977 the United States Congress passed Public Law 95-87 which has been commonly referred to as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (or SMCRA). This title is somewhat misleading in that the act creates as many regulatory requirements for underground coal mines as for surface coal mines. How- ever, this paper will concentrate on the effects of SMCRA on designs and stability for various activities of surface coal mines, specifically those concerning "Disposal of Excess Spoil". In the past, the objective of most laws and regulations applicable to the mining industry has been to achieve goals of safety or environmental concerns for all types of mining. However, SMCRA is unique in that it sought to regulate-all-activities of coal mining from initial data gathering, exploration, mine design and facilities design to reclamation activities and design. More specific to the stability of the activities of surface coal mining, special criteria for design and construction performance standards have been promulgated for the construction and maintenance of roads, dams and embankments, coal processing waste, ex- cess spoil piles, backfilled reclamation and pit slides. The criteria for design for the previously mentioned facilities has been enumerated by regulations and in many ways restrict the use of site specific design parameters. The Sundance gold mine, located 2.5 km east of the town of Batchelor in the Northern Territiory, has produced over 5300 oz of gold since it was discovered in 1978. Sundance is unique in the Pine Creek Inlier in that the ore is hosted in palaeo-karst detritus and crystalline magnesite of the Early Proterozoic Coomalie Dolomite. This paper presents a summary of the geology of the mine, and describes the methods used during the two periods of mining.

Foreword In loose ground and soft rock formations, mechanical tunnel boring is necessarily dependent on the adoption of shield machines and the application of adequate support or lining structures. These structures are erected either within or immediately behind the rear portion of the shield and provide the required reaction to the forward thrust. In competent rock formations where systematic support is not a requirement, hard rock tunnel boring machines generally advance by thrusting from a structure gripped against the tunnel walls. These machines may feature a more or less extended cutterhead shield or roof support, but when in weathered, fractured or otherwise weakened ground, or in fault zones filled with soft gouge, the gripper mechanism often cannot provide enough thrust reaction to advance the cutterhead. Under these conditions, early support of the arch and walls is generally required in the form of rock bolts, steel rings and laggings and some times of a primary concrete lining placed in the short section between cutterhead and grippers. Design of the deep foundations for the loads imposed by lateral spread include the estimate of the pressure applied by the liquefied material as well as amount of anticipated displacement. In the absence of a non-liquefiable cover over a liquefiable layer, it is possible to design the foundation system just for the additional pressure applied by the flow slides. On the other hand, if a non-liquefiable layer exists above the liquefied zone, the foundation should be designed for anticipated movements. To completely account for liquefaction and/or lateral spread and their interaction with the deep foundation system, a coupled soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis should be performed. However, a complete SSI analysis may not be feasible for most of the projects. This paper will present recent advances in analysis techniques and simplified methods to design deep foundations for liquefaction and lateral spreading. In addition, a case history of the Rancho California Bridge in southern California located within 1 km of the active Elsinore fault will be presented. One of the bridge abutments is underlain by potentially liquefiable layers. The pressure applied by the liquefiable layer was estimated to be greater than the shear capacity of the 36-inch CIDH piles designed for the abutment. However, with limited ground improvement and more careful analyses incorporating structural effects of CIDH piles, resulting design and construction resulted in a factor of safety greater than 1 against slope failure. The recommended approach was generally consistent with the recently published, and AASHTO sponsored, NCHRP 12-49 project regarding seismic design guidelines for new bridges and the effects of seismic displacements against bridge foundations.

D.2 Principal Types of Coating A Sodium Silicate Sodium silicate is a good fire retarder when freshly applied, but it loses its effectiveness if the relative humidity is at all high, thus exposure to a relative humidity exceeding 65 percent causes a serious decrease in the effectiveness after only one month. In fire, sodium silicate swells to a frothy mass (intumescence) which hardens and insulates the wood against heat. This property is destroyed by exposure to moisture. Manufacturers of many of the proprietary paints containing silicates state that their products have overcome this difficulty The reagent may be applied alone, or, better, in a mixture with lime-water and common salt, or with inert fillers such as kaolin or asbestos. B Ammonium Phosphate Strong solutions (25 to 35 percent) of monammonium phosphate or diammonium phosphate give good protection. Two or three coats of hot solution should be applied either with a large flat brush or an ordinary paint spray gun The solution should be applied as hot as possible, as this improved penetration, and it should be the aim of the operator to apply 4 lbs of reagent, i e , one gallon of 33 percent solution to every 100 square feet of surface

MEASUREMENT of radioactivity of rocks and ores has developed into a complete method of geophysical exploration. The problem falls into three natural categories: (I) surface radiation measurement in the field and underground; (2) radioactivity logging of drillholes; and (3) laboratory analysis of samples. Portable counters are used in the field for tracing radioactive formations and for quantitative estimates of radioactive content of surface rock. Wartime advances in battery design make it possible to construct small precision counters that can be carried easily. Even the smallest conventional diamond drillholes can be logged, and actual content of the radioactive element can be measured. The exact grade of very thin active layers or veins can be estimated only approximately. Samples may be analyzed for their alpha, beta or gamma activity, and beta assaying is the best suited to rapid routine operation. Simple calibration with standard samples is sufficient for rough work, but a density correction is necessary when greater precision is required. Samples with high emanating power should be fixed and stored for three weeks to reestablish the radium-radon equilibrium prior to precision assaying. Carnotite can be fixed by sintering or molding with plastics. Among the important new developments, a low-voltage Geiger tube has been designed recently, and crystal scintillation counters hold great promise for high-efficiency gamma-ray measurement.

An experimental investigation was carried out to determine the various gas flow characteristics of bituminous coal samples. Adsorption and desorption tests were first conducted to estimate the quantity of methane that is retained by coal, and the rate at which it is released. Experiments were then carried out to study the variation in coal permeability with changes in applied stress and gas pressure - factors that change continuously with time. To further understand the phenomena involved in retention, release, and flow of gas, electron microscopy was used to study the microstructure of coal and how it affects these characteristics of coal.
