Measurements of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for comprehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as elementary form as possible. A description of calibration methods constitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 197 will be used in equations throughout the paper. Dynamic and Static Gravity Methods Methods of measuring gravity fall into two groups: dynamic and static methods. The first group involves the measurement of time. Examples are: determinations of the period of oscillation of a pendulum, measurements involving the free fall of a body, and comparisons of gravity with the centrifugal force of a rotating body. Measurements in the second group of gravity methods are concerned with deflections of certain indicators when the force of gravity is in equilibrium with another comparison force.

Desulfurization of limestone during and subsequent to calcination has been investigated using U.S. Steel's Rogers City quarry-Michigan limestone cut to 25-30-mm diam spheroidal shapes. The experimental observations indicated that the sulfur present as iron pyrite in commercial limestone is oxidized partly to SO, during calcination and partly converted to sulfides (FeS, CaS) and CaSO4. If calcination is carried out under oxidizing conditions, most of the sulfur is converted to CaSO4, which can be removed from burnt lime readily in CO,-CO mixtures, the higher the CO content the faster is the rate of reaction. In the 30-mm-diam spheroids gas diffusion in the pores of limestone and burnt lime is fast relative to rates of the desulfurizing reactions. Over the temperature range investigated, e.g., 850° to 1200°C, there is internal desulfurization.

The primary criteria used by the mining industry to judge the merit of a project is internal rate of return (IRR) rather than net present value (NPV), although NPV is favored by academicians. This paper discusses the problems of IRR and NPV and compares the multigoal nature of the decision¬makers and their need for informa¬tion having the characteristics of NPV and IRR. The conclusions reached are that both NPV and IRR can be used for investment ranking, that NPV suffers the same multiple root problem as does IRR, and the use of conventional incremental IRR to reach NPV¬consistent project ranking is mis¬leading.

Production of hot metal from the Hlsmelt Research and Development Facility at Kwinana, Western Australia commenced in October 1993. The stand-alone facility is a unique, coal-based, integrated ironworks equipped to process iron ore fines to pig iron and simultaneously undertake a wide range of research tasks. The data generated will be used to verify the commercial potential of the technology and to set the design and operating parameters for a full-scale production plant. The design, construction, commissioning and initial operation of the HRDF has required many innovative and practical solutions to be developed and implemented by the international group of organisations contributing to the Hlsmelt Project. Initial operation has produced results which demonstrate the potential of the unique process technology associated with the core plant smelting unit. The recent achievement of post-combustion levels of 60 per cent with heat transfer efficiencies greater than 85 per cent demonstrates that the performance obtained with the Small Scale Pilot Plant in Maxhutte, Germany can be reproduced at a larger scale. The results presented in this paper support the thrust for further intensification and future commercialisation of the process.

Introduction Very little attention normally is given by the experts, or the public at large, to the fact that the majority of the oil that has been or will be discovered within the U.S. remains in the ground. The inherent limitations of oil production through surface wells, either by primary or secondary techniques, will result in a total of over 300 billion bbl of oil left in the ground after completing production by standard petroleum techniques in currently producing or producible fields. This reserve represents some two-thirds of the original quantity of oil discovered in place. Recent work by a number of groups has shown that there is strong economic justification for extracting this remaining oil by mining and processing techniques. Table 1, taken from 1977 API reports, demonstrates the oil left in place at the end of the conventional petroleum production cycle in then-known fields within th’e U.S. Possible targets for oil mining operations include (1) oil remaining in place in fields and pools that have reached economic depletion by current petroleum production methods and that are not amenable to economic recovery by conventional petroleum industry techniques; (2) oilor bitumen-saturated rocks not normally considered by the industry to constitute producible reservoirs, such as shales and diatomites; and (3) asphalt- and bitumen-impregnated rocks. Economically Depleted Fields A more detailed examination of the depleted fields shows that estimates of oil remaining in place after primary, secondary, and nondestructive tertiary recovery can vary widely. There is significant evidence, however, that more than half the estimated original oil in place (OOIP) remains in the reservoir after all petroleum extraction techniques have been applied. If one compares the sum of past oil production and estimated remaining producible reserves with the API estimate of total discovered OOIP as of 1975, it becomes apparent that for the U.S. as a whole, 67070of the 00IP will remain in place at the end of the

Recent applications of explosives and blasting agents to rubble rock have led to requirements for more elaborate design and analysis methods. In most blasting uses, it is necessary not only to fracture the rock, but also to move the broken rubble in a predictable manner. Many in situ extraction techniques require rubblization to take place in a confined region where rock motion is a predominate factor in creating a permeable broken bed. In this paper, two analytical methods are presented which describe the large rubble motion during blasting. These methods provide the blast designer with a tool for evaluation and further refinement of blasting patterns and timing sequences. In both these methods, the rock medium is represented by a series of discrete, discontinuous regions. The use of discontinuous techniques rather than the classical continuum methods, results in better approximations to the rubble motion. These regions are set in motion by pressure loads from the explosive. The motion of these regions is then calculated numerically using interaction laws between regions in contact. The basis for these models or methods is presented along with the background for selecting explosive pressure loads and rock mass material behavior. Typical examples, including both cratering and bench blasting geometries, are discussed which illustrate the use of these models to predict rubble motion. Such engineering representations appear to provide a practical method for use in predicting rubble motion and a tool for design evaluation of blasting in confined geometries.

(written discussion *).-This paper is particularly interesting to me, because it gives data on a much mooted question, viz., the serviceability of Le Chatelier (platinum-platinum-rhodium) thermocouples under severe industrial conditions. It has always been supposed that platinum-platinum-rhodium thermo-couples, used at high temperatures under strong reducing conditions, would not give long service and were subject to rapid volatilization. The fact, however, that the carefully kept records indicate that a little more than 3 gm. out of more than 830 gm. was lost over this considerable period, shows what kind of service can -be obtained from platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples,, when properly installed, and well cared for. While the writer has no actual figures on the loss of weight, etc. of platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples under service, he was told, by the man in charge of pyrometers at a large industrial plant in which over 400 platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples were installed in furnaces doing various kinds of heat-treating work, that the average maintenance cost, for materials alone, including platinum-platinum-rhodium wires and protecting tubes, was 27 c. per furnace, per month:

The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco's first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is segregated and stockpiled as it is encountered during mining. Economic drives dictate the exploitation of formerly less attractive ore bodies located close to or even beneath the water table. These ores can cause handling problems and expensive downtime of processing equipment due to their increased adhesive characteristics and are colloquially termed as “wet and sticky” ores. In order to gain a better understanding of the causes of poor handleability, experimental test methods for wall and inter-particle adhesion within bulk solids samples were developed and validated. The results confirmed that adhesion of bulk solid to equipment surfaces is mainly governed by capillary pressure. It can therefore be described using the Young-Laplace equation, which implies that adhesion is primarily dependent on the interfacial water between bulk material and the adhesion partner. Accordingly, the governing material parameters of adhesion are its capillarity and permeability, as these two characterize water transport to or from the interface of the adhesion partners. Furthermore a threshold for the classification of a material as wet and sticky based on the measurements of adhesion has been proposed.

The is the 14th consecutive year for this column and the 13th in which the royalty data have been tabulated. Some holes still exist in the list of royalties that readers hopefully will fill. Construction aggregates - either sand and gravel or crushed stone - are the most common mineral commodity. In spite of their pervasive use nationwide, royalty information for these commodities has been difficult to acquire from some states. Readers can help. Share information about these missing states and next year there will be fewer states without information. Dennis Bryan sent a copy of a report, "Regional Appraisal of Mineral Materials: Carson City District, BLM." The report was authored by real-estate appraisers. It contains more than 50 references to leases of various construction materials in Nevada and nearby states. It gives a thumbnail sketch of each lease and is a good reference. However, the authors erroneously imply that the royalty rate and the in-place value are the same. Several of this year's new entries come from the report. However, the royalties for landscaping materials vary from state to state and by rock type. Some boulders used for landscaping in Nevada have a royalty reported at $1.10/t ($1/st). At the other extreme is lava from Idaho. Used for the same purpose, it has a royalty range of $11 to $18.70/t ($10 to $17/st). Chuanming Tian of Beijing, China has shared some information about the changing mineral royalty policies in China. China first implemented an oil and gas royalty in 1984. In 1992, the government expanded that to include iron ore. In 1994, the royalty policy was extended to all mineral commodities. At the same time, the royalty rate for iron ore increased tenfold.

In this study, a newly developed plaster stemming method is studied and compared with the usual dry drill cuttings stemming method for surface blasting in mines and quarries. Drill cuttings are generally used in open pits and quarries as the most common stemming material since these are most readily available at blast sites. However, dry drill cuttings eject very easily from blastholes without offering much resistance to blast energy. The plaster stemming method has been found to be better than the drill cuttings stemming method due to increased confinement inside the hole and better utilization of blast explosive energy in the rock. The main advantage of the new stemming method is the reduction in the cost of blasting. In one series of blast tests, blasting costs per unit volume of rock were reduced to 16 per cent by increasing burden and spacing distances. Also, better fragmentation was obtained by using the plaster stemming method. Blast trials showed that plaster stemming produced finer material. In the same blast tests, +30 cm size fragments reduced to 5.4 per cent of the total, compared to 37.7 per cent in the conventional method of drill cuttings stemming. With this method of stemming, vibration and air shock values increased slightly due to more blast energy being available for rock breakage, but these increased values were small and under the permitted limit for blast damage criteria.

One of the objectives of the Bureau of Mines is to develop substitution technology for scarce materials. In accordance with this goal, alloys containing lanthanum, cobalt, copper, and magnesium were investigated for fabrication of rare-earth-cobalt (RE-Co) permanent magnets. A complete substitution of lanthanum for samarium and a partial substitution of copper for cobalt was accomplished. Magnets of La-Co and La-Co-Cu-Mg alloys were fabricated by powder metallurgy techniques and evaluated. A maximum intrinsic coercivity of 23.2 kOe was obtained with a La-Co-Cu-Mg alloy. In comparison, maximum values of 9.3 kOe and 11.6 kOe were obtained with La-Co and La-Co-Cu alloys, respectively. The substitution of copper and magnesium for part of the cobalt resulted in a large increase of intrinsic coercivity, similar to the results of Bureau research with mischmetal-Co-Cu-Mg alloys. Unlike the mischmetal-Co-Cu-Mg magnets, the La-Co-Cu-Mg magnets showed signs of physical deterioration on exposure to air. The effects of fabrication parameters on the magnetic properties of the La-Co-Cu-Mg alloys were also determined.

Although lifetime estimates for sulfate reduction based on total substrate carbon typically range from 20 to 30 years, field and laboratory experiments showed that rates of sulfate reduction decreased over time as readily available organic material was consumed. When the rate of acid input exceeded the rate of sulfate reduction, alkalinity was removed from the substrate, the pH decreased and metals increased. Output pH increased from 4 to more than 6 after the system was shut down for several weeks and the rate of acid input was reduced. Successful long-term treatment requires a design based on the input pH and the long-term organic decomposition rate.

This is in part a review paper, indicating the various steps that have been taken in developing hindered-settling apparatus, some of the standard data that have been obtained, and some of the conclusions one is led to as to the effect of it in improving concentrating-methods and machinery, and in part it brings in some unpublished work. Causes oF Loss in ORe-ConcEntration. In making a study of the separation of valuable minerals from the waste gangue, particularly by water concentrators, it is necessary to define, first of all, what are the causes of loss that are likely to interfere with the concentration. Having made this definition, we can then study to see in what may the machines make their losses, and plan remedies for them in an intelligent way. Losses may be stated to occur as included grains, as flat or long grains, as fine free mineral, and as absolute slime. We will take these up one by one, as follows: Included Grains.—Fig. 1 shows by a set of diagrams how included grains may occur : first, where the heavy mineral grains attached to the quartz are of large size; secondly, where they are of small size; and thirdly, where very fine particles of heavy mineral are included in the quartz. We have to decide in regard to included grains whether they are rich enough to go direct to the furnace, or poor enough to throw away, or whether they lie between these two points and require recrush-ing as the only means of severing the values from the waste. This last case is the orlly one requiring special treatment at our hands. We will therefore consider that next.

This paper summarizes the investigation carried out on a wide range of rock types, subjected to high velocity impact to simulate explosive action. A Split- Hopkinson Bar apparatus was used to generate the high velocity impact. The rock samples included both homogeneous and isotropic, and anisotropic types. The strain rate achieved was between 600 and 12OO/sec, The respective measured dynamic compressive strengths were compared with their low strain-rate or static values. It was found that the ratio of the dynamic to static values ranged between 2.5 and 4.6. It was also determined that the high strain-rate loading produced finer fragment size distribution than the static loading. The fragment size distribution from the two strain-rate regimes has been further analyzed to establish correlation with rock types and the strength characteristics. The results also confirm that high strain-rate loading (i.e. high detonation pressure and high velocity of detonation in an explosive column) would significantly affect the degree of fineness in a blast.

The pyrometallurgical industry plays a vital role in producing metals for our modern life. With growing demand for metals and declining grade of mineable ore, innovations become critical for many mining companies. This has given rise to the need for a review of recent improvements to the pyrometallurgical industry in terms of analytical measurement techniques, process and equipment improvements, and computer-based modeling/simulations. Because many of these innovations tend to be applied to a wider scope of metals, not restricted to a specific metal, we studied the broad applications of many improvements to a wide range of metals. We found that the challenge of a lack of robust measurement techniques under high-temperature conditions within a furnace hinders optimization of a pyrometallurgical process. Some future opportunities in the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, computer modeling, and processes and equipment were also outlined and discussed.
