I The South Platform of the Gippsland Basin is an extensive area of shallow basement covered by a relatively-thin Late Mesozoic-Cainozoic section. Although the sporadic exploration to-date has not resulted in any hydrocarbon discoveries, the area is under-explored and its taste potential has not yet been fully evaluated. The best potential appears to be in areas underlain by the Golden Beach Megasequence where structures are mainly related to basement fault blocks.

"The microwave dielectric properties of silicon dioxide at frequencies of 915 and 2450 MHz were characterized in the temperature range of 24 to approximately 1000 °C using the cavity perturbation technique. It is shown that the relative dielectric constant of silicon dioxide at both frequencies remains almost unchanged below 500 °C, above which there is a slight increase of 2%. The relative dielectric loss factor of silicon dioxide exhibits a strong temperature dependence above 500 °C and increases by approximately 7 and 5 times at 915 and 2450 MHz, respectively. The substantial increase in the relative dielectric loss factor is mainly attributed to the enhanced dielectric polarization and accelerated electrical transport in silicon dioxide at elevated temperatures.IntroductionSilicon dioxide (Si02) is usually considered a microwave transparent material due to its poor absorption capability at room temperature [1]. This characteristic has led to various applications of silicon dioxide in microwave processing of materials and communication. For instance, Si02 has been used to produce sample holders for microwave heating and substrates for electronic devices [2,3]. These applications generally require the material to withstand high temperatures under microwave irradiation. This indicates that microwave absorption capabilities of silicon dioxide at elevated temperatures are also important for its utilization.The microwave absorption capability of Si02 can be determined based on dielectric characterization (permittivity measurement) of the material at commonly used microwave frequencies, 915 and 2450 MHz, in a broad temperature range. To date, however, no detailed work on the dielectric properties (permittivity) of silicon dioxide at high temperatures has been reported. The present work is aimed to study the dielectric properties of silicon dioxide from room temperature to approximately 1000 °C at 915 and 2450 MHz. The results show that the permittivity of silicon dioxide has a strong temperature dependence above 500 °C, suggesting a substantial increase in its microwave absorption capability."

The H-3 Project is planning, design, and construction of a 10-mile (16 km)-long final segment of new highway that traverses the Koolau mountain range in Oahu. Interstate H-3 traverses North Halawa Valley on one side of the Koolau Mountains and Haiku Valley on the other side. The project includes a tunnel through the mountain range. The one-mile (1.6 km)-long twin-bore Trans-Koolau Tunnel will have two lanes in each direction. The total roadway width including shoulders in each bore will be 38 ft (11.6 m). The geologic and geohydrologic conditions along the alignment present a variety of tunneling problems. Geologic conditions consist of volcanic materials deposited generally in fairly thin basaltic layers. These volcanic materials generally weather down to "MH" soils which are compressible but relatively strong. Perched ground water that is recharged by heavy rainfall is present in the mountains. The paper presents results of initial geologic surveys and exploratory boring, and plans for exploratory tunneling and testing programs. A site specific classification method developed to characterize the weathered profile is presented.

O processo de micro soldagem se mostra eficiente para a união de Ligas com Memória de Forma (LMF) do sistema NiTi devido a alta precisão e localização do calor, diminuindo os tamanhos da zona fundida (ZF) e da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA), promovendo melhorias nas propriedades mecânicas destes tipos de juntas. Este estudo teve como objetivo geral determinar as variações das propriedades termomecânicas em juntas soldadas de fios de NiTi. Para o trabalho, fios superelásticos de uma LMF NiTi (ASTM F2063) com 0,9 mm de diâmetro, foram divididos em dois grupos: (a) fios sem tratamento térmico (NiTiA) e (b) fios com tratamento térmico a 400°C durante 20 minutos (NiTi400). Em seguida estes fios foram soldados pelo processo TIG, utilizando a microsoldadora Micromelt (EDG Equipamentos e Controles). A caracterização termomecânica dos fios íntegros e microsoldados foi realizada utilizando ensaios de calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC), análise dinâmico-mecânica (DMA), ensaios de tração uniaxial, microscopia óptica (MO), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microindentação Vickers. Os resultados mostraram a eficiência do processo TIG ao soldar os fios NiTi de ambos os grupos. As juntas soldadas apresentaram propriedades de superelasticidade semelhante aos fios íntegros e a análise da fratura dos fios com solda mostra características dúcteis.

"Gravity separation by centrifugal equipment, particularly in the mineral processing industry is a novel approach of optimising product recovery. The manufacture and sale of centrifugal equipment by recently established companies is now beginning to have a significant impact on the industry. Some benefits of operating at increased gravity include: reduced environmental issues, a shorter lead time, lower capital cost and improved recoveries of elemental mineral before entering the grinding circuit.Of topical discussion is the use of centrifugal separators for the recovery of less valuable minerals that will form a greater proportion of the feed compared to traditional scalping circuits where the gold content is extremely low. This ultimately results in the centrifugal system having to have a greater mass pull. In addition, the relative density difference between gangue and valuable mineral is likely to be less and therefore modelling and optimisation of this separation process will be necessary. Some researchers have muted using fluidisation models to model the forces present in the separation zone of a centrifugal separator2. It is not unusual for the manufactures of centrifugal separation equipment to use fluidisation terminology to describe what happens in the separation zone. Most fluidisation models are based on the empirical/classic relationship between superficial fluid velocity and voidage postulated by Richardson and Zaki. However, no researcher has proved the effectiveness of this relationship in an increased gravity Environment."

Geological mapping makes an important contribution to orebody knowledge during the evaluation of structurally controlled gold veins. Orebody knowledge comprises an understanding of mineralization characteristics relevant to evaluation, mining, processing and environmental issues and allows project expectations to be realistically set. Structural interpretation to define continuity and mineralization controls is a key part of geological risk reduction and the reporting mineral resources using the JORC and other codes. The Dolgellau gold belt is a small British field that produced an estimated 150 000 oz from narrow quartz veins. Historical records, recent exploration and production data, published material, and accessible surface and underground exposure provide a valuable case study. Previous mapping has shown the general geometry of vein systems, but tends to accentuate gross geological continuity. Recent work has attempted to determine internal vein architecture and examine the significance of the historical views of ore shoot controls. The work resulted in the definition of vein continuity scenarios for the gold belt and evaluation expectations associated with each. This has, in turn, led to a realistic view of what can be achieved from an evaluation and project development perspective.

Correlations for the critical velocity needed to hydraulically convey particles in horizontal, or near-horizontal, pipes are either explicitly dependent upon the shear stress imparted by the fluid upon the surface of the particle bed, or require a velocity and hydraulic diameter. Often such approaches are modified to account for pipe inclination by the introduction of simple factors. However, we assert that the physics that underpins the hydraulic conveying of particles in steep pipes (such as a directionally drilled oil well) is dissimilar to that which governs particle behaviour in horizontal pipes. In steeply inclined systems, a sliding sediment induces an upward counter flow and hence an autogenous contribution to the shear rate. The physics underpinning particle hydraulic conveying in steep systems is explored using the separation results of Laskovski et al.10

And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. Not everyone understands the concept of mineral royalty. Mineral royalty is a fee paid to a landowner by someone who extracts a mineral commodity from the owners property. The royalty contract between the lessor and lessee contains clauses and conditions that are significant to both parties, e.g., annual m1n1mum, escalation factor, duration of the lease, reclamation and assignability. Comparison of royalty rates requires knowledge of many conditions that influence the value of a given deposit. People in several different professions benefit from shared royalty information.

Statistical analysis of multi-seam mining case studies demonstrated that geologic structure and lithological type and sequencing were predominant factors in entry failures. Finite element analysis was used to evaluate the effects of stress field changes on entry instability under differing geologic conditions. Analysis showed the roof to be particularly vulnerable to shear with the location of the failure site changing to meet loading and geologic conditions. Effects of external support on roof stability were examined. Results were correlated with field data to determine stress levels at which failure could be expected to occur. Based on this research design, criteria were developed for roof stability evaluation under specified interactive loading conditions.

Characterizing exploration prospect potential has aspects that differ from those encountered during ore reserve estimation. One problem is determination of the ore reserve potential prior to acquisition of significant volumes of hard data. The evaluation is subjective and data are usually sparse and of uncertain quality. However, estimations of the ore reserve potential are commonly demanded by management before project funding will be approved. The estimations from several prospects, along with the uncertainties inherent to the estimation, are then used to compare and contrast the potential of several prospects, often with widely varying geologic models.

In order to recycle the iron and rare earth from the Baotou tailings, a roasting method was developed involving the addition of C, Ca(OH)2, and NaOH, designed to both decompose the rare earth minerals and convert haematite into magnetite and allow its recovery. The effect of various parameters such as roasting temperature, roasting time, C addition, Ca(OH)2 addition, and NaOH addition on the reduction ratio of haematite (iron sesquioxide) and decomposition ratio of rare earth were investigated. The results showed that the reduction ratio of haematite and the decomposition ratio of rare earth could be as high as 85% and 95% respectively when the roasting temperature was 650°C, roasting time was 60 min, Ca(OH)2 addition was 4%, NaOH addition was 3%, and C addition was 1.5%.

Before National Lead built an industrial plant on its Fredricktown property, some 100 miles south of St. Louis, a 750x500-ft area on the proposed site was investigated by electrical resistivity, seismic refraction, and churn drilling. Data were accumulated to prepare an isopach map of the overburden and to determine soundness of the dolomite bedrock and the depth to bedrock at fixed points. The site was on a gently sloping hillside. Elevations above sea level ranged from 760 ft in the northwest corner to 820 ft along the eastern edge, giving a total relief of 60 ft. There were no major drainage features, but in the northern part of the plant site there was an indicated depression area which later was interpreted as reflecting subsurface conditions in the bedrock. No rock was exposed in the entire plant site area; the surface was characterized by soil and overburden. GEOLOGY Prevailing geology in the area of investigation was relatively simple—Bonneterre dolomite overlain by residuum. The red overburden was that derived from the weathered Bonneterre. Some chert was present, interpreted in the general area as a weathering of both the Bonneterre dolomite and younger sedimentary rocks such as the Potosi dolomite. During the period of actual measurements the residuum varied from moist near surface on the western edge of the proposed site to dry near surface on the eastern edge, and for this reason overburden resistivities ranged from low on the west to high on the east. Seismic velocities were low, since the material was not well packed. The bedrock encountered was dolomite, specifically the Bonneterre of Upper Cambrian age which, according to McQueen,' consists of an upper dark gray member and a lower light gray member. These have been further divided into four zones, in ascending sequence a dark gray, sandy argillaceous dolomite; a dark brown or black, fine-grained dolomite: a light gray, finely crystalline, compact dolomite; and, at the top, a dark brown, finely crystalline, compact dolomite. In the area of investigation the upper two zones were encountered in the drilling tests as constituting the bedrock. The dolomite varies widely in porosity, which is low in the dense, fine-grained layers. In this area, therefore, both electrical resistivities and seismic velocities were high. Different forms of optical pyrometers are discussed and the advantages and disadvantages of the different types for measuring high temperatures are pointed out. These advantages and disadvantages lead to the selection of the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer for most work. Attention is directed to the necessity for the use of a monochromatic screen with a pyrometer, which leads to a discussion of the meaning and use of the effective wave length of the screen. Methods of calibrating the optical pyrometer are outlined and it is shown that an optical pyrometer can be calibrated just as definitely as any other temperature-measuring device. Accuracy tests are included, in which it is shown that excellent results can be obtained by even untrained or slightly trained observers with this form of optical pyrometer. The various corrections that are necessary in this kind of work are indicated, including corrections for stray light, for absorption of windows, of smoke, and so forth. The troublesome problem of measuring the temperature of bodies that do not radiate like a black body is discussed and the corrections for reducing such readings to the true temperature are given for a number of different materials. Introduction The fundamental idea of temperature depends upon our temperature sense and bodies are said to be hot or cold depending upon the reaction of our hands or some other part of the body to the heat from the source investigated. This paper proposes a simple two-parameter model for the typical inverse relationship between recovery and flotation concentrate grade. The model is based on the mineralogical limitations imposed by the material properties. One parameter (R*) describes the proportion of metal content which is floatable, and the other (b) is the rate at which the fastest floating particles are being contaminated by the other less valuable particles present in the mineral system. One significant feature of the recovery-grade curve is that initial recovery (i. e. R ? 0) is at the purest attainable mineral grade, (but as recovery rises the cumulative grade of the concentrate tends to the feed grade. The ideal recovery-grade curve for a particular mineralogical system can be obtained by release analysis: the release analysis curve determines the maximum or limiting separation efficiency. The model proposed in this work is similar to the linear recovery - cut-off grade model of Dell (1), but has the advantage of describing the whole curve.

A major concern of mine fires is the heat generated ventilation disturbances which can move products of combustion (POC) through unexpected passageways. Fire emergency planning requires simulation of the interaction of the fire and ventilation system to predict the state of the ventilation system and the subsequent distribution of temperatures and POC. Several computer models were developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to perform this simulation. The most recent, MFIRE, simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influence such as varying outside temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output allows quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system. This paper describes recent USBM research to validate MFIRE's calculation of temperature distribution in an airway due to a mine fire, as temperatures are the most significant source of ventilation disturbances. Fire tests were conducted at the Waldo Mine near Magdalena, NM. From these experiments, temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire and compared with simulations from MFIRE.

The Pittsburgh Research center3 conducted research to study and improve electrical fault detection on coal mine direct-current (dc) trolley systems. A suspended trolley line delivers power at voltages of 300 or 600 V dc to the haulage equipment and other loads. Roof falls or other accidents may force the trolley line down so that an electrical fault current may flow between the trolley line and rail. This fault current could result in localized heating, arcing, and perhaps fire. Such faults are not always preventable by the existing circuit protection because the current magnitude is well below typical operating levels of the trolley system. The research discussed in this report studies the applicability of computerized signal analysis techniques to solve this problem. Tests were conducted at cooperating coal mines. Measurements were taken during normal loading of the trolley system (light, intermediate, and heavy traffic), during induced fault conditions (arcing and bolted faults), and during transitions between the two. These data were then used to train and test a microprocessor-based fault detection algorithm. Later, field tests of the detection algorithm found that it correctly classified the state of the trolley system greater than 95% of the time.

Beneficiation of high magnesium Florida phosphates requires ultrafine grinding to liberate the dolomite (the main source of magnesium), and a separation process capable of dealing with ultrafine sizes such as selective flocculation. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of separating dolomite from apatite ultrafines by selective flocculation. To achieve this objective, selective polymeric reagents to either dolomite or apatite must be first designed and synthesized. This challenging task was accomplished by carefully selecting complexing/chelating agents which are selective to either the Ca or Mg ionic sites on the minerals, and incorporating these reagents into the structure of long chain water soluble polymers to obtain either selective flocculants (with high molecular weight, MW, polymers), or selective dispersants (with low MW polymers) to either the dolomite or the apatite particles. Synthesis and testing of these polymers on individual and mixed mineral slurries, and on a sample of natural high magnesium phosphate ore, have been attempted and the results are described in the paper. The preliminary results showed encouraging signs for the feasibility of selective flocculation separation of dolomite from apatite.
