THE Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of .the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Trust drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T. 16S., R.15W. This well is located almost, on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.15S., R.15W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.1

After two disappointing years where most industrial minerals posted decreasing production, 1981 saw an increase in production over 1980, or at least in status quo. Several commodities did, however, post significant gains. For example, bromine posted a 14% increase; fluorspar production dropped 21% in 1980, but gained 24% in 1981; and sulfur production increased. However, perlite was off 13% and manufactured sodium sulfate off 18% in 1981, while natural sodium sulfate production remained almost even with 1980. In fact, many industrial minerals production either remained constant, increased, or decreased only slightly over 1980. Increasing energy costs had their impact on industrial minerals in 1981. Hopefully, the recent downward trend in energy costs, at least gasoline, will financially help some of the more marginal plants. The 1979 shortage of rail cars that did not carry through 1980 also did not carry through in 1981. Rail rates increased 12.8% over-all last year, while average freight rates for industrial minerals increased 15.5%, according to Neil Johnson, consultant. Also, the trucking industry posted a 5-6% decrease in rates due to deregulation. All in all, we in the industrial minerals section seem to be holding our own at least. Stanley J. There will be 3 billion people moving into cities by 2050. Permitting is both the biggest obstacle and the biggest opportunity for mining. The problem is not if we have the right minerals, but how we can permit and produce it in a ?Sustainable? manner. A ?Permit? and a ?Sustainable Development Plan? may soon be the same thing. How do we produce the minerals we need with: 1. The lowest possible carbon footprint. 2. Social license from community outreach by being a catalyst and not a problem in a ?Green World.? 3. Enhanced water supply during all stages of production. 4. Meeting requirements of our customers for service, quality, & cost. How important is it to have a complete ?Sustainable Development Program?? First, no plan is complete!!! It is a work in progress subject to continuous improvement. We need to work together to get the results we want. The goal of the world communities is to become carbon neutral by 2050. What is the mining community?s goal? Do we have one???? When a Clorox, Colgate Palmolive, Wal-Mart, Toyota, or Caterpillar buys a product, what are your chances of getting an order without a good program in place? The answer is it will be difficult or impossible shortly and you will be requiring the same thing with your suppliers. This is an opportunity if you are in the lead and it soon will be a necessity for most mining and processing companies requiring much extra effort to catch up. For some mines it was a necessity to get most of the SD plan to get permitted. The number of companies in the extractive industries with a full Sustainable Development Programs is expanding rapidly as shareholder demands for transparency continue to grow.

The fundamental competitive structure in world coal markets will be modified by the entry of such new participants as Colombia and the newer mines in South Africa. The US will, in most markets remain the swing producer, although a number of low cost US mines will continue to compete in world markets. Exchange rate swings will persist as a major hazard for coal exporters.

The Wongawilli system of mining has been in use for over 30 years and has enabled high production rates and acceptable extraction ratios to be achieved in seams less than 4 m in thickness. A modification of the Wongawilli system has been developed to permit the use of a continuous miner and mobile equipment to extract a coal seam 6 m thick. Following physical and mathematical model studies the new mining method is now undergoing field trials at Collinsville, Queensland. Progress of the field trials to date has achieved 99% extraction of the upper slice by remote control operation of the continuous miner and established the feasibility of installing resin grouted wooden dowels in the coal floor to reinforce the coal septum. There are many methods of analysis available for compounds similar to those used in solvent extraction processes. However, the majority of these methods are not directly applicable to the determination of solvent extraction reagents, especially in raffinates. The number which are applicable is further reduced if limited to the more simple methods suitable for process control purposes. Commercial extractants are complex mixtures. The complexity is increased by the addition of diluents and modifiers in two-phase systems containing metals. Raffinates from solvent extraction processes contain the more polar components of the extractants and the products of decomposition. Only a limited amount of information is provided by total organic carbon or spectrophotometric analysis. The complexities of the systems require a combination of methods.

Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural-tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. Since their discovery in 1886, they have produced 52% of the gold mined in all of human history (Pretorius, 1989).

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.

O aço em estudo (SAE8620MOD) é um material utilizado na aplicação de estruturas de óleo e gás. Essa liga modificada é utilizada em estruturas off-shore para produção de amarras. Para garantir a qualidade do produto são realizadas uma série de ensaios, dentre eles propriedades mecânicas (RT, LE, Alongamento e redução de área) bem como resultados de dureza e impacto. O ensaio de impacto está relacionado diretamente com a microestrutura obtida durante o processo de solidificação do aço e com o tratamento térmico realizado. Microestruturas com alto grau de bandeamento podem comprometer a variabilidade dos resultados de impacto. A redução ou até mesmo a eliminação do bandeamento é um caso de amplo estudo, principalmente em aços com processo de lingotamento contínuo. Muitas soluções já foram propostas para a redução do bandeamento, o de agitação eletromagnética tem se mostrado bastante efetivo na redução dos níveis de bandeamento e segregação dos produtos lingotados. O ensaio consiste em avaliar a intensidade do campo eletromagnético (FEMS) para o comportamento do nível de bandeamento do material. Foi utilizada uma corrida para teste via lingotamento contínuo, onde a velocidade de lingotamento permaneceu constante e variou-se a corrente dos agitadores em três condições: tarugos com baixa agitação (FEMs com corrente baixa), tarugos com alta agitação (FEMS com corrente alta) e tarugos sem agitação (FEMS desligado). Com baixa agitação no FEMS conseguimos obter um nível de bandeamento menor se comparado com os outros resultados. Como consequência a variação dos valores de impacto apresentaram-se menores que as demais condições, devido a homogeneidade do material. Dessa forma podemos dizer que a redução do nível de bandeamento no material reduziu também a variação dos resultados de impacto, tornando o processo mais estável.

"The Hidden Creek mine is about l~ miles north of the north end of Granby bay; a nearly landlocked body of water on the west side of Observatory inlet; 90 miles north of Prince Rupert; British Columbia.The main haulage way of the mine at 385 feet above sea-level has been driven north into the somewhat precipitous end of a north-south ridge that rises from the tide flats between the east and west forks of Hidden creek. The outcrops of the principal orebodies, two prominent bluffs of stained rocks and sulphides, were higher on the face of the ridge and extended from about 530 to 850 feet elevation. North from the bluff tops, the ridge comb rose gradually to about 1,200 feet elevation. The name of the discoverer and the date of discovery of the Hidden Creek orebodies are probably unknown, but the discoverer is believed to have been an Indian from one of the reservations along Observatory inlet. The deposit was brought to the attention of John Flewin, Government Agent at Post Simpson, near the beginning of the present century. Mr. M. K. Rodgers, developer of the Nickel Plate mine at Hedley, did the first organized work on the deposits. Next the Hidden Creek Copper Company prospected the property. Rodgers acquired the prospect a second time, did more work, and finally in 1910 optioned the property to the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, at that time operating at Phoenix and Grand Forks in the Boundary district of British Columbia. The optionees stepped up the development work and brought the property to production in 1914. The ores were direct smelted until 1924. In that year a mill was built. From 1930 until the end of the productive life of the properties in 1935, all of the ore was milled and the concentrate smelted. From March 17, 1914, until July 31, 1935, the production from the Hidden Creek mine was, in round numbers, 18,000,000 tons of 1.70 per cent copper ore and 6,000,000 tons of low grade dilution rock. The Hidden Creek mine ""died with its boots on"". During 1934 the average monthly production was 146,377 tons of 1.06 per cent copper ore. For 7 months of 1935 the average was 161,750 tons of 1.03 per cent ore, and for the final month, July 1935, the production was 156,950 tons."

Drilling has been accepted as a major exploration tool. However its use in mine planning and development has been overlooked.This need for drillhole data was highlighted during the redevelopment boom of the central Victorian gold mines. During the 1980's numerous old mines were evaluated and successfully drilled to yield mineable parcels of quartz reefs close to existing workings.Invariably the initial decision was always to attempt reopening and rehabilitating existing access. The four case studies described have proceededsufficiently to show that major cost savings would have been made if underground drilling had been used as the main tool in mine planning.Savings not only in expenditure, but in the time required to make key decisions. In two cases the mines would have experienced far earlier expansions in production. In one case the mine would be currently producing rather than awaiting further finance. In the fourth example, the decision to case development would have been much earlier providing capital to other projects.

O setor Petróleo e Gás Natural vem tendo enormes gastos com as paradas de manutenção. Estes gastos estão relacionados à degradação sofrida por seus equipamentos de refino devido à corrosão. Uma possível solução seria a utilização de novas ligas de aço inoxidável ferrítico com elevados percentuais de molibdênio, o que teoricamente favoreceria um aumento da resistência à corrosão. No entanto, pelo fato dessas ligas serem aplicadas na condição como soldada mudanças microestruturais significativas podem ser geradas, além de considerar o fato da solda das ligas em estudo ser realizada com material dissimilar, e a diferença existente entre o metal de adição e a região afetada pelo calor (ZAC) pode propiciar ao surgimento do fenômeno eletroquímico conhecido como pilha galvânica. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar o comportamento corrosivo na solda dissimilar de duas novas ligas de aço inoxidável ferrítico com diferentes teores de cromo e um elevado teor de molibdênio, ambas com adição de superliga de níquel, verificando a influência da pilha. O resultado da soldagem foi avaliado através de exames metalográficos e ensaios eletroquímicos. As micrografias do metal de adição utilizado na soldagem das ligas mostraram que o mesmo possui uma microestrutura dendrítica e os gráficos obtidos dos ensaios de Polarização Potenciodinâmica Cíclica não reproduziram para as ligas soldadas, o que foi melhor analisado observando os resultados dos ensaios de forma separada, para as regiões que constituem a solda das ligas, o metal de adição e ZAC. Sendo possível verificar a existência de uma maior resistência a corrosão no metal de adição.

Expansion of the B.H.P. Co. Ltd. mater ials handling facilities, at their Newcastle Steelworks, began in 1964 and continued until 1970. The present complex handles the annual iron ore requirement of some three million tons for the Sinter Plant and Blast Furnaces. Iron ore is discharged from ore carriers and conveyed at rates up to 3,000 t.p.h. to either of two 180,000 ton capacity storage yards, where it is blended using boom stackers. Material is reclaimed from these yards at rates up to 1,000 t.p.h. using a slewing boom bucket-wheel reclaimer and fed to a screening station. Oversize material is scalped out and crushed in a closed circuit cone crusher. Undersize material is sized on double-deck vibratory screens which separate at 1/4in (6mm). The two fractions are blended in two of four 70,000 ton capacity blending yards using slewing boom travelling stackers. Bridge-mounted bucket-wheel reclaimers reclaim the blended piles at 1,000 t.p.h. Fine ore is conveyed to the Sinter Plant and lump ore to a second screening station, for rescreening, before passing to the Blast Furnace.

The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) employs the technologies of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The use of backscattered electron images to define phase boundaries produces very high resolution image analysis and subsequently detailed and accurate particle images and data output. The mineralogy, elemental deportment, grain size, liberation characteristics and mineral associations of a large number of samples can be described. The MLA uses a comprehensive set of analysis methods to meet a wide range of applications. The data from ore characteristion projects completed during feasibility studies are important aids for effective plant design. The MLA can be used to establish variation in the mineralogy of an orebody, identify and quantify the deportment of deleterious elements, and provide valuable information to support comminution and flotation test work. In established plants the MLA data is an important component of plant survey work and monthly composite samples. Changes in feed characteristics and/or operating conditions can be monitored and solutions to any deterioration in recovery and grade performance found. The MLA has extensive applications in the minerals industry. Rare and precious metal samples can be accurately measured using high-resolution grey-scale images. Several new measurement techniques have been developed to perform rapid searches of a large number of samples to provide efficient and accurate analyses of fine-grain, low concentrate material. Quantifying the mineral variability in mineral sands operations is essential to maximising grades and recovery. The MLA produces particle-based data on density, mineralogy, size and shape and has developed measurement techniques to provide the elemental quantification required for the characterisation of these deposits. Nickel sulfide ores can be analysed to provide modal mineralogy, elemental deportment and liberation and locking data. The low-grade and variable nickel mineralogy of these deposits makes the use of quantitative mineralogy an essential component of maximising returns. Coarse particle measurements preserve the in situ textures of ores and support flotation and breakage test work for feasibility studies. The deportment of penalty and bonus elements can be quantified and the association and grain-size data can be used to identify potential separation issues.

The paper reviews the efforts made to utilize powder metallurgy to solve problems encountered when using alloys at high temperatures. The following subjects are discussed: comparison of wrought and sintered super alloys, sintered aluminum powder, porous materials for transpiration cooling, molybdenum, and cermets. TODAY, powder-metallurgy techniques are be-JL coming increasingly important, producing materials which at the present time cannot be made by any other method. Among these materials are high melting-point metals such as tantalum and tungsten, porous metals for filters and lubricant-containing bearings, electrical contacts and electrodes (i.e., tungsten-copper), cutting tools of the cemented carbides, and magnet alloys. In addition, the powder-metallurgy industry has grown because, through the application of its methods, shaped parts, such as gears, can be produced at tremendous rates with a low scrap loss in comparison with manufacture by casting or forging and machining. In the past few years, by utilizing powder metallurgy, several approaches to the problem of high temperature materials have been investigated. In this paper the authors will review some of the studies on application of materials having properties above 1350°F. Since their experience lies in the aeronautical field, possible uses of powder-metallurgy techniques in the production of aircraft en- gines will be emphasized. A large portion of the work is classified, but such a restriction has not eliminated any field from discussion, although limiting the amount of detail it is possible to present. The development of high temperature alloys from powders and porous metals for cooling will be discussed as well as research done on molybdenum and molybdenum alloys, cermets, and intermetallics. Some studies on the utilization of cermets will be considered along with special problems that have been revealed through these investigations. Special interest in certain factors of sintered aluminum powder (SAP) makes it desirable to discuss this material although its use temperature is below the 1350°F limitation set for this paper. High Temperature Alloys from Powders In general, components made from powders for room-temperature application have been investigated with the primary purpose of taking advantage of the high production rates and economies made possible by powder metallurgy. From the standpoint of properties, the ojective of the powder metallurgist has been to obtain a product comparable to the cast or wrought product that is to be replaced. Comparisons of the properties of alloys made by powder-metallurgy methods with those of similar compositions made by casting and forging are reported in the literature.12 In many cases equivalent

"The New Pascalis property is situated in Louvicourt and Pascalis townships, about 200 km east of Val d'Or, Quebec. It is made up of 38 claims under option to SOQUEM since August I, 1981 during which time SOQUEM has earned a 60% interest. The property is underlain by archean basaltic volcanics that have been intruded along the west boundary by the Bourlamaque batholith, and by north -trending dykes.The 1982 disco very is related to the re-evaluation of a 1931-gold showing located in the southeastern part of the property, a combination of the presence of a weak IP anomaly at the eastern end of the showing and overburden stripping at that location, resulted in the discovery of a mineralized diorite dyke.The dyke, which strikes N 20 ° Wand dips vertically , has intruded E-W striking agglomerates. The dyke contains south dipping, gold-hearing quart z-tourmaline-pyrite veins that are distributed in a ladder-type arrangement. Visible gold may he observed in drill core, and is generally associated with pyrite porphyroblasts.Diamond drilling has outlined th e dyke for a strike length of 300 11/ and a width of about 10 m, Result s of this drilling indicate, to a depth of 155 m, reserves of 834 000 metric tonnes grading 8.25 g Au/t un cut or 5.38 g Au/t cut to on e ounce. However, four deeper holes have added depth extension to 400m. Also, west of the dyke and within 150 m, other promising gold values have been intersected within quartz-tourmaline veins associated with other parallel dykes."

Nitric acid oxidation rate analyses of three coals, previously studied microscopically by the Bureau of Mines, revealed three components. Relative quantities agree with those found for the four components given by the Bureau and results are consistent with current ideas of coal constitution. Possible multi-component composition for bright coal and a reactivity-rank relation are suggested.

IN a previous paper,' the experimental methods used and some of the results obtained in an extensive investigation of steels containing zirconium were described. The present paper considers in greater detail one of the most interesting of these effects, namely, the elimination of " red shortness" and the occurrence in steel of a compound of zirconium and sulfur. A consideration of the actual percentages of zirconium, manganese, and sulfur in numerous steels in the light of behavior during rolling has led to new conclusions of the most practical import regarding the reciprocal relationships of these elements. The microscopic examination of high-sulfur steels containing zirconium has also been productive of interesting results. Before discussing the experimental data in question, it may be stated, briefly, that the rettetion between zirconium and sulfur in molten steel may be represented by the simple equation, Zr + 25 = ZrS², and that the zirconium sulfide thus formed occurs in the finished steel in the form of gray-colored inclusions, closely resembling manganese sulfide and, like the latter, exhibiting plasticity at rolling temperatures. Molten steel containing zirconium retains such a negligibly small amount of oxygen in solution that the foregoing reaction goes to completion. The modification of structural clays by chemical processes is a common method. It usually uses strong inorganic acid attacks, aiming at improving the clay’s properties and applications. Among the applications are its use in clay-polymer nanocomposites, cosmetics, medicines, and bleaching clays. Tests using acid attack to modified Brazilian bentonites were successfully performed and, resulted in significant improvement in the clay properties. This paper discusses the use of a Brazilian bentonite modified by acid attack as bleaching clay. The treated bentonite samples were characterized by XRF, specific surface area (BET) and SEM/EDS. The treated clay exhibited improved bleaching capacity for Brazilian nut oil and other Amazonian oils.

The object of crushing and grinding for leaching is obviously to permit contact of the solvent and mineral and subsequent removal of pregnant solution in a reasonable time. Heap leaching is the leaching of ores that have been mined and transported to prepared, relatively impervious pads for leaching by sprinkling or ponding, and percolation of the lixiviate through the ore. Dump leaching is the leaching of dumps or low-grade ore or overburden without the use of prepared pads under them. Run-of-mine material, e. g., low -grade ore from open pit stripping operations, may be leached without crushing, and a fairly high recovery made by heap leaching. An alternate method for better grade gold/silver ores is to crush to 9 to 13 mm (318 to112 in. ) size for pad heap leaching, as used by Smoky Valley Mining Company at Round Mountain, Nevada, on gold ore, and to 38 rnrn (1 -1 12 in.), which will be done by Candelaria Partners, at Candelaria, Nevada, on silver ore. Heap leaching of copper probably began at Rio Tinto, Spain, about the year 1752. This was done by the leaching of weathering piles of ore in the open air followed by iron cementation of the liquor that drained off the heaps. Its application to the low -grade southwestern United States copper ores was overlooked for many years, and low- grade ores from Sacramento Hill at Bisbee, Arizona, were the first to be heap leached in 1923. Site preparation used a half century ago is the same today. "The need for some form of waterproofing of the pad was evident. Before leaching ore was piled, the site was cleared of cactus and brush. After clearing a gentle sloping area, it was then covered with a blanket of rolled and tamped clay or slime tailing. When heaps are built, a layer of coarse fragments may be put down first to assist drainage. A second method of leaching without grinding, usually for higher grade ores, is by vat or tank leaching of material crushed to 9 to 13 mm (318 to 112 in.) size. Such a plant is considerably more expensive than a heap leaching installation but much less costly than grinding for agitation leaching, and a recovery higher than that obtained by heap leaching is to be expected. Vat leaching has been widely used by the copper industry on higher grade copper ores but has been used in only a few small operations on that size gold or silver ores. However, such a plant should be considered for a modest tonnage of a few million tons, 3 to 7 g per mt (0.10 to 0.20 oz per st), of Carlin-type leachable ores crushed to 9 mm (318 in.).
