Atmospheric processing of nickel lateritic ores with low costs has been encouraged. In this work the kinetic of atmospheric acid leaching of a northern- Brazilian ore with 1.63% Ni and large amount of fine particles (d50 ≈ 0.075 mm and 40% below 0.038 mm) is presented. Chemical analysis showed a trend of Ni and Fe concentration in finer fraction (−0.075 mm) and Si and Mg in the coarsest one (−0.500 + 0.150 mm) associated to distinct mineral phases. Nickel is widespread in the mineral matrix. Distinct behaviors were observed as a function of particle size associated to the distribution of silicates and iron oxides in the ore. The kinetic modeling indicated that leaching is controlled by porous layer diffusion at 65 °C, but at 95 °C exhibits a mixed control by porous layer diffusion in initial minutes (60 min) and by chemical reaction or diffusion through the pore layer in final minutes (60–240 min) depends on metal evaluated.

The electrical resistivity of rocks has been studied quite extensively, in particular, the effects of temperature and confining pressure on resistivity. References 1 through 6 at the end of this chapter pertain to electrical resistivity of rock and contain further references on the same topic. The present study is motivated by an interest in determining the in-situ properties of rock as well as the stress state of the rock and how these quantities are changing with time. Most of the previous work on the electrical resistivity of rocks has been directed toward saturated rocks at relatively high confining pressures and temperatures. The present study was oriented towards air-dry surface rock that might occur in mine pillars. The mean stress and temperature under such conditions are comparatively low. It has been demonstrated that the resistivity of rock is highly dependent upon the porosity. In fact, for saturated rocks, a relationship referred to as Archie's law has been established between porosity and electrical resistivity. In the case of saturated rock, the property that is actually being measured is the resistivity of the solid/fluid system. Since the resistivity of the fluid alone is usually much lower than that of the dry rock, it is understandable that the resistivity of a saturated rock is in general several orders of magnitude lower than the resistivity of a relatively dry rocli. For dry rock, it seems reasonable that the electrical resistivity should increase as microcracks open within the material. Since microcracks open as material is stressed closer and closer to its failure point, it appears that there should be a correlation between electrical resistivity

The Victory Bridge project was contracted by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The project included the construction of two 4000-ft precast segmental concrete bridges to replace the existing Victory Bridge that was built in the 1920's. The existing bridge was a swing span bridge that was in desperate need of replacement. The project was considered high priority due to the large maintenance costs to keep the swing span operating over the busy navigational channel. In March of 2003 construction began on the first bridge and by April of 2005 all of the segments were set for the second bridge. On September 5 of 2005 the second bridge was open to traffic. The total cost of the project was $110-million. The two new bridges required the construction of 24-eight foot and 32-six foot diameter-drilled shafts with rock sockets. All of the shafts were constructed in the tidal Raritan River working from barges. What will follow is a description of the construction techniques that were used to build these drilled shafts, the anticipated and unanticipated challenges that were encountered during the project, and the lessons learned.

Peat is a natural organic material of botanical origin. Peatlands are situated predominately in shallow wetland areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Commercial deposits are formed from the gradual decomposition of plant matter under anaerobic conditions for about 5,000-years. In 2004, peat was harvested in 16 states. Florida, Michigan and Minnesota accounted for more than 80 percent of the U.S. production. Reed-sedge was the dominant variety of peat harvested in the United States, comprising almost 80 percent of the output. This was followed by humus, hypnum moss and sphagnum moss.

BY the courtesy of Mr. Charles W. Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimens, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel ; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. Among those of the nonmetallic class may be mentioned graphite, soapstone, serpentine, ashes- * A branch or cross railroad is in operation as far as Walhalla ; but the single daily train runs at an hour not convenient for this expedition ; and Seneca City is probably the best starting-point. At all events, I obtained there an excellent mount for the trip.

Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. Mining layout See Figure 1 and Figure 2 for a detailed description. Drill rig The drill rig was a combination of a Secoma P-Low LC 10long hole feed and an Axera low profile carrier. The choice of this equipment was made through consultation with Tamrock Sandvik. All relevant design perimeters of the area to be mined were taken into consideration. Production targets

Surface deformation monitoring is required all over the mining industry. For example oil and gas companies need this information to support exploration and production activities and to detect impacts from surface subsidence of existing hydrocarbon fields. Also opencast mines require large area information of subsidence due to dewatering of the overburden. Because of this, a lot of surface deformations measurements with GPS or traditional geodetic measurement techniques have been conduced during the last decades. This paper presents the actual capabilities to analyze GPS data using the state of the art Bernese GPS Software for GPS post processing. A new way of monitoring subsidence is a combination of GPS and satellite InSAR data. Considering this it is hoped that a combined strategy will permit receiving overall more information by integrating high point density of InSAR and accuracy of GPS. DMT is one of the leading actors on GPS services especially for monitoring surface movements from underground activities e.g. mining, water pumping or oil and gas exploitation. The paper will discuss preferences and problems of this approach on results of a current project of DMT.

The mineralogy of natural iron ore samples and their slimes have been investigated and the nature of slime interference in iron ore flotation has been studied. The results have been correlated with the flotation behavior of a natural ore sample. Various conclusions have been reached as a result of these studies. In the flotation of iron oxide ores, desliming is generally considered to be an essential step to successful separation, irrespective of whether the iron oxide or siliceous gangue minerals are to be floated, although some workers have found empirically that certain collectors and reagent combinations are less sensitive to the presence of slime than others. The detrimental effect of slime is considered to be twofold. First, the presence of slime presupposes a high reagent consumption because of high specific surface. When clays are present and when cationic collectors are used abstraction by ionic exchange may augment this condition. Attempts to compensate by the addition of large amounts of reagent result in only partial correction. Second, slime coatings on granular particles tend to interfere with the bubble-mineral contact. The nature of slime coatings in flotation is quite complex and has been the subject of considerable study; an attempt was recently made by Fuerstenau et al.' to relate the slime-coating density with flotation recovery and with the properties of the electrical double layer at the mineral surfaces. Although major constituent minerals in the oxidized iron ores of the Mesabi and Cuyuna ranges are hematite and goethite (limonite) as the iron oxides, and quartz and chert as the siliceous gangue, very little is known of the mineralogy and of the chemical and physical characteristics of the slimes, and still less of the interaction between slimes, collector, and the mineral surfaces. For pragmatic reasons iron ore slimes are defined as — 20p material, based upon the calculated settling velocity of a quartz sphere of the stated diameter, and of all other equal-settling mineral particles. Active slime interference with flotation is usually attributed to particles 5p in size or finer, the extent of such interference appearing to depend not only on the mineralogy but also on the size distribution of each mineral in the slime fraction. The objective of this work was to acquire a more specific knowledge of the constitution of iron ore slimes and of their role in flotation. The mineralogi-cal composition of natural slimes was obtained by differential thernal analysis (hereinafter referred to as DTA), electron microscopy, and chemical and X-ray analyses. Some flotation tests were made on natural ore samples. The surface properties of several constituent minerals were investigated by electrophoretic measurements and by determination of the adsorption of some typical flotation collectors. Finally, simplified flotation tests were made on granular goethite and quartz in the presence of various artifically prepared slimes; the results were compared with laboratory flotation tests made on natural ores. MATERIAL AND METHODS Mineralogy of Some Iron Ore Slimes: Samples of two wash-ore tailing::, hereinafter identified as A* and B, *Sample A of the present investigation 18 the same am ore A in ref. 3. of a wash ore C, and of a paint rock D, all from the Mesabi range, were selected for investigation on the basis of prior information concerning their flotation behavior. The two wash-ore tailings, when deslimed, were known to respond well to flotation, whereas the wash ore was high in goethite, tended to be slimy, and responded poorly to flotation. The paint rock also exhibited sliming tendencies, and was suspected to contain relatively large quantities of clay minerals because of its high A1203 content. Gruner states that the paint rock of the Mesabi frequently contains kaolinite. To ascertain the relative sliming tendencies of each sample a standardized desliming method was employed. We have worked on several flooded pits from coal-mining activities in the former East Germany, as well as ones associated with hard- rock mining, including the B-zone pit discussed in the above technical paper. We found the paper to be a useful summary, but, unfortunately, it failed to give an adequate comparison of the physical limnology of the flooded pits, which is an essential component. While the title suggests that the primary focus of the review is physical limnology, it appears that it is essentially pit-lake chemistry being presented. Physical limnology requires that factors such as fetch, latitude, light penetration, relation to ground water table, methods of flooding and the physical shape of the pits be defined. These physical aspects of a pit interact with the chemical and biological processes taking place in it, all of which contribute to the character of a water body. Few of these physical aspects are presented, however. The conclusion that the authors reach suggests that meromixis may be a condition that would serve as an effective containment mechanism for contaminants in a pit. Although this may be desirable, such limnological conditions are not clearly supported by the data presented for any of the pits. These data should be summarized to facilitate comparison between the same structural units of the pit water - the epi- and metalimnion for example. The thermocline depth is a reflection of the physical forces mixing the water body, and pit dimensions affect these forces. Due to the use of different scales in Figs. 2 through 5, it is difficult to determine whether the thermocline is at the expected depth, because the fetch is not given. Moreover, the status of a water body cannot be determined unless measurements cover a period of at least one year, and depth profiles are completed to represent the entire depth of the pit. This shortcoming is most notable in the case of the Berkeley pit, where data are given for depths of only 20 and 35 m (66 and 115 ft), although the pit is reported to be 242 m (794 ft) deep. Limnological data to define the status of the pit water have to be collected at regular intervals, for the same parameters. The authors present temperature measurements for 1-m (3.3-ft) intervals, but fail to use that interval for other parameters, such as dissolved oxygen or, in some cases, for contaminant concentrations. Furthermore, the profiles for the deepest part of the pit display only part of the picture, because pits are rarely conical. Profiles can be considered to represent the status of a water body only after other stations in the pit have been monitored regularly and the consistency is determined. For example, fresh water, which can enter a pit at any depth, would interfere with the proposed meromictic conditions. Similarly, organic material at the bottom of a pit, such as the fish-waste deposited in the Gunnar pit, contribute to oxygen consumption. Oxygen depletion alone is not indicative of meromixis. It is interesting to note that the Dpit arsenic concentrations could possibly be slightly higher than the B-zone pit concentrations at depth, although this is difficult to determine accurately when a log scale is used for the D-pit and not for the B-zone pit. In our investigations, we noted arsenic removal in the B-zone pit bottom water, which was due to the formation of particles that are relegated to the newly forming sediment in the bottom of the pit. Particle-carrying contaminants form due to a combination of geochemical and biological factors and TSS contributed from erosion of the upper parts of the pit walls, whereas the settling out of particles from the water column is controlled by the physical conditions or turn over, for example. during ice cover in the B-zone pit. Although meromictic conditions for flooded pits may be desirable at decommissioning, this would depend largely on the physical conditions of the pit, because, under no circumstances, would this water be of desirable ground-water quality. Under meromictic conditions, acidity, if an environmental issue, may be reduced by microbial acid-neutralizing activity, and several heavy metals may form more or less stable sulphitic compounds. These may stay suspended in the water if conditions are such that they are not relegated to the sediments, i.e., in the absence of turnover. These processes do not take place in meromictic conditions only, but meromixis does require autochthonous and/or allochthonous organic substrate supplies, which are generated under aerobic conditions. "Recent R&D pilot plant testing was done to validate a full industrial scale system for recovering residual magnetite from the tails of an iron ore concentration plant. The recovery system is based on an autogenous heavy media separator treating a tailings slurry at 0.45% solids by weight. A 3,100 m3/h capacity concentrator was installed based on the testing findings. Excellent metallurgical results have been observed in two years of continuous operation. This experience is the basis for the proposal of a novel process consisting of the preconcentration of base metals ores; the idea being to obtain a heavy bulk concentrate of the polymetallic minerals and discarding in one step the light gangue mineral components. The bulk concentrate then proceeds to conventional froth flotation. The reduced volumetric flow of the bulk concentrate allows a reduction in the size of the subsequent flotation circuit. A prerequisite for the heavy media separation is a fine size grinding of the ore and a correspondingly high degree of liberation of the mineral species to be recovered. A process scheme is also presented in which the gravity concentrator works in conjunction with a companion tailings thickener for process water recovery. The underflow from this thickener, having paste consistency, can be sent to a tailings dam or mixed with Portland cement for mine backfill. The process water in the system is managed at an estimated recovery in excess of 98%. Additional R&D work using this novel approach is being considered by a large iron ore concentrator for removal of liberated silica from the final concentrate; and for upgrading 3.5 million tons of a marginal hematite reserve owned by the mining company.INTRODUCTIONGravity preconcentration (static and dynamic) of sulphides prior to froth flotation has been and is being practiced at various concentrator plants (Asarco´s Young Mill: heavy media cone; Mount Isa: DSM cyclone; Afton Mines: Denver jigs; Tsumeb Mine: Reichert cone) (Burt, 1984). The idea behind installing preconcentration equipment is to reduce the volume of feed processed on flotation, thus requiring smaller flotation plants although other advantages may be of importance, such as obtaining richer concentrates due to higher grade feed, better process water and energy management, and reduced flotation reagent consumption.The SedconTM solid/liquid separator is a versatile process unit patented in Mexico (MX/u/2007/000305). As a gravity device, it may be classified as an autogenous heavy media dynamic concentrator. Figure 1 depicts the Sedcon (Sedimentador de conos) separator. The four main components are as follows: the feedwell for efficient mixing of the pulp with dilution water and flocculant (and coagulant for water clarification); the inner cones (passive elements for solid/liquid separation); the discharge underflow cone; and the scraper mechanism. The standard discharge cone is a 60° inclined cone for general applications. For paste tailings thickening applications, a deep cone with a 69° inclined cone is used."

FOR MANY YEARS lead and zinc have had the so-called protection of a tariff and it is the purpose of the following brief discussion to show what' such protection actually accomplishes with a view to forecasting the possible results of the present copper tariff. In analyzing the subject, tabulations of the United States production, consumption, imports and exports, including ore and concentrates and all of the metallic products, of both lead and zinc have been made for each year since 1900. Of these data, the relationship of the imports and exports and the relative foreign and domestic prices are shown in Table 1. The conclusions drawn from these figures are listed below. 1. The United States is an exporter of zinc. 2. The United States is an importer of lead. 3. The average price of zinc at St. Louis for the last 32 years has been no higher than on the London market even though zinc and zinc ore have "enjoyed" a protective (?) tariff of varying amounts per pound for 22 years of this period. 4. The average price of lead on the New York market for 32 years has been 1.2c. per pound higher than on the London market, the tariff varying from 0.75 to 1.5c. per pound of lead in ore, and 1 to 2c. or more on manufactured lead.

INTRODUCTION The Metro Rail Project is approximately a 20-mile initial portion of Southern California's planned 150-mile transit network and will provide transit service to the dense population and employment centers within the Los Angeles regional core. The Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) has defined, as the first segment, a 4.4-mile five station rail line, which extends from the yard and shop area near Union Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. Design packages are completed; utilities are currently being relocated; demolition is underway; early construction contracts have been awarded; and construction has started. This paper will describe the current status of the Metro Rail design and construction, after first briefly reviewing its history, objectives, and main components. PROJECT HISTORY The California State Legislature created the SCRTD in 1964 with a legislative mandate to design, construct, and operate a rapid transit system within the Los Angeles County area. To obtain the monies required to support this program, in June, 1974, Proposition 5 was passed by a solid majority, allowing a portion of state gasoline taxes to be used for rapid transit development. This measure provided a local source of funds for SCRTD to begin its rail rapid transit development program in Los Angeles.

Computer simulation of comminution systems is found to provide significant cost savings by enabling efficient circuit design and development of control systems. These simulation systems are based on sound mathematical models and numerical methods. Nevertheless, they are found to be hard-to-use and hard-to-modify to carry out more elaborate process analysis. This paper discusses the fundamental principles and practical aspects of an advanced, highly functional, and user-friendly SIMulator for COMminution, SIMCOM, that is being developed at Berkeley by incorporating state-of-the-art software engineering principles.

"Modular, predesigned diamond recovery plants have been a feature of the diamond mining industry for more than 20 years. The reasons for the selection of such a design route are contrasted with the alternative option of custom-designed route and the relative merits of the two approaches are discussed. The predesigned, modular plant is shown to be particularly applicable for the smaller operation, whether as part of a diverse alluvial mine, an auditing facility for an adjacent large plant, bulk sampling or a remote installation such as is envisaged in the Canadian diamond industry. The characteristics of the predesigned modular plant are described, as well as the inevitable compromises resulting from the concept. IntroductionThis paper explores the application of predesigned modular plants to the diamond mining industry and contrasts their features with the custom-designed installation .A predesigned modular plant is a self-contained unit, or a number of self-contained units, which, when assembled , make up a treatment facility. Underground and opencast coal mining has occurred since 1896 on the Stockton Plateau, West Coast, New Zealand. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) from historic and current mine workings has had an adverse environmental impact on the surrounding aquatic environment. The two main catchments affected by ARD from historic and current mine workings are the Mangatini and St Patrick Stream catchments. Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd (SENZ) is using active (e.g. alkali dosing) and passive (e.g. engineered cover) technologies to mitigate the adverse environmental effects associated with ARD contaminated waterways. This paper discusses the passive technologies. Principal strategies include the capping of high capacity potentially acid-forming volumes of overburden. The mudstones were found to generally have the highest sulphur levels compared to other overburden lithologies. Areas with high mudstone volumes are prioritised to be encapsulated and 390 Ha is planned to be capped in the Mangatini catchment in the near future.   Monitoring beneath granite, cement kiln dust and coal combustion product covers show oxygen can be reduced to less than 10% of atmospheric levels. Laboratory column leach tests that were subjected to oxygen flux rates of 10 % showed reducing oxygen ingress into acid-forming material can result in significant acid load reductions.   The oxygen content below the cement kiln dust cover was generally lower than 5% and water quality measured in lysimeters beneath this cover improved after 50 weeks of emplacement. Column leach tests containing saturated samples were undertaken to determine the most appropriate water medium in preventing pyrite oxidation. The sample saturated with ARD (pH ~ 3) had a negligible acid production rate and leached very minor Al concentrations although Al is soluble at low pH. This indicated saturating waste rock dumps with ARD can be an effective method in mitigating ARD formation.

Marine minerals are more than an academic curiosity as they represent the most significant global source of mineral materials for economically and ecologically sustainable development for the future. Minerals research is traditionally carried out by industry and thus, in the United States at least, applied research in marine minerals may not get the share of government funding or attention that more exotic programs for space exploration or future global disasters engender. Two recent events have significantly changed the status of marine minerals. Discoveries made in the last thirty five years indicate that the potential for mineral occurrences in the oceans and seabeds, area for area, is as high as for terrestrial lands. On this basis the global mineral resource base has been recently increased by a factor of four of which three quarters is underwater. The recently enacted Law of the Sea has mandated what is probably the most far reaching re-distribution of natural resources in human history, and has resulted in a peaceful subdivision of seabed jurisdictions between the coastal nations of the world which should significantly affect future mineral markets and the balance of economic powers. Significant applied research efforts are ongoing for marine minerals as an adjunct to commercial production in southern Africa for diamonds; and in many other parts of the world for sands for beach and coastal protection. Forward planing, including research and development activities focussed on future commercial production of metalliferous oxides, continues in Korea, China, Japan, India, and with lesser activity, in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and the CIS. Annual expenditures for this work amount to millions of dollars. In all cases the environmental aspects of commercial produc¬tion are a significant part of the research. Geologic studies on the occurence and distribution of metal sulfides at plate boundaries continue on a regional basis in the Pacific.

It was a colossal mistake on the part of certain of our statesmen in the past which led to the severing of the interests of the two countries which, by the greatest of all bonds-Nature-were meant to be one. I should imagine that outside the Kaiser-Junker classes, even the Hun himself would prefer to be under Anglo-Saxon laws and customs rather than his own.
