"Despite the lip service that has been paid to pro-active plant maintenance processes over recent years, a significant portion of maintenance in industry is still reactive. The business driving force to prevent expensive production opportunity costs arising from “break-down maintenance” is obvious. Various benefits can be derived from successfully deploying remote equipment diagnosis technology and associated business processes.From an end-client’s viewpoint these include the ability to predict and take actions to prevent equipment breakdowns, increasing the lifetime of equipment by responding to appropriate operating instructions and therefore improving the return on capital expenditure. Better planning and scheduling of maintenance priorities and resources with performance measures like an Equipment Health Index are also possible. The knowledge that a qualified supplier engineer is constantly in touch with the operating conditions of their equipment, albeit remotely, is more than a comfort, and can be translated into quantifiable cost savings and improved supplier service levels."

While coal occurs beneath about 18 percent of Utah, only 4 percent of the state has minable reserves. Utah's coal fields are mostly bituminous. Current coal production in Utah is largely by underground mining, making Utah unique among the coal-producing states. Most coal seams are more than 8 feet thick. Utah's coal resources are about 6.3 billion tons, 1.3 percent of the national reserve. Most of Utah's coal resources are held by the Federal Government and Indian tribes and are mined under lease. The climate of the Utah coal region is characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, relatively moist winters. Normal precipition varies from 6 inches in the lower valleys to more than 40 inches on some high plateaus. The growing season ranges from 5 months in some valleys to less than 3 months in mountainous regions. These extreme climatic conditions make reclamation difficult. Utah gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 21, 1981. Full program approval was obtained March 7, 1983. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 3,1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was signed in March 1987; Utah performs all enforcement activities and some permitting activities on federal lands.

"Bell Creek Mill which has been in continuous operation since 1987 has undergone numerous operational changes in the past three years. The addition of over 2. 5 million tons of resource at over 13 git from Hoyle Pond Mine precipitated an expansion program for the Bell Creek Mill. This paper discusses the major changes that have occurred over the past two years to increase throughput and efficiencies. In addition, the refractory ore treatment options are also discussed.IntroductionThe Bell Creek Mill is located in the Timmins Goldcamp approximately 8km NE of porcupine Ontario. (Fig I.)The mill was originally constructed by Camamax in 1987 to treat the Bell Creek ore at a design throughput of 350tpd. The flowsheet (Fig 2.) consisted of two stage crushing, grinding, thickening, leach and drum filtration with gold recovery by Merrill Crowe.As ore depleted at Bell Creek, the Mill was purchased by Falconbridge to process ore from their Hoyle Pond property. Kinross purchased the Hoyle Pond property and Bell Creek Mill from Falconbridge in 1992.The successful exploration program at Hoyle Pond has led to several expansions and process design changes, with further changes planned over the next twelve months.In 1994, the mine produced 61,865 oz. of gold at an average cost of 197US$ per oz. In 1995 production was 91, 611 oz. at a cost of 187US$ per oz. Projecting the nine months ended September 30, production for 1996 will be 155,000 oz. at a cost of 165US$ per oz.In early 1997, the CIP expansion will be complete, with a target of 175,000 oz. at a cost of 176US$ per oz for 1997. The mill throughput will have increased from 400tpd to 1500tpd between 1994 and 1997.The changes to Bell Creek since 1994 have been numerous with very little of the existing equipment still in operation. The total cost of the expansion to date is 15 million C$. This paper discusses the major projects carried out during in this time. The focus will be to highlight the justification of each project, the design and engineering, some of the initial start-up problems and solutions.Figure 3 shows a plan of the existing mill facility together with the various additions that were carried out."

Anglo Platinum have perceived a need to increase the rate of reef development both for new mechanised stoping technology and on conventional new developing mines. The Research and Development Division of Anglo Platinum therefore initiated an experimental reef raise project with a tunnel boring machine (TBM) at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM). The scope of the trial was for the boring of a reef raise 340 metres in length on the Merensky Reef. The boring phase of the trial took place over six months and the average rate of penetration of the TBM was 0,47 metres/hour. TBM utilisation was 22%. The TBM used in the trial was a Jarva MK6 manufactured in 1972 and its design with its backup system was not considered to be an ideal machine for reef development. However it was the intention of the trial to prove the concept of developing with a TBM on reef. In this respect the trial was unequivocally a success. There were many problems and long delays did occur during the boring phase. Nevertheless there is every confidence that a new TBM can be designed specifically for this type of work that will achieve high rates of advance up to (say) 400metres/month and with a more flexible steering system in order to negotiate reef changes. It can therefore be expected that TBMs will be used in the future for reef development on South African platinum mines.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Shagou deposit is located along NE-trending faults within the high-grade metamorphic basement of the Xiong’er Terrane in the Qinling orogenic belt. It is a large Ag-Pb-Zn deposit hosted in the Taihua Supergroup and has proven reserves of 1.54 Mt of ore with grades of 767 g/t Ag, 13.24 per cent Pb and 4.31 per cent Zn. The hydrothermal ore-forming process can be divided into early quartz-pyrite, middle quartz-polymetallic sulfides and late quartz-carbonate stages. Four types of fluid inclusions (ie pure carbonic, carbonic, pure aqueous and aqueous) can be distinguished in quartz. Fluid inclusion, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotope systematics indicate that the ore-forming fluids are initially deeply sourced metamorphic water with meteoric water gradually mixed in the later stages. Sulfur isotope data show that the ore-forming fluids originated from both the Taihua Supergroup and the sedimentary successions of the Guandaokou and Luanchuan Groups (CSC) located to the south of the Machaoying Fault. A genetic model of the Shagou deposit is proposed as follows: CSC subducted northward along the Machaoying Fault beneath the Xiong’er Terrane during the Mesozoic collision between the North China Craton and South China Block. Subsequent dehydration resulted in the devolatilisation of fluids rich in CO2. These fluids migrated upwards, reacted with the Taihua Supergroup and formed the Shagou deposit.CITATION:Han, J-S, Yao, J-M and Chen, H, 2015. The war caused a demand for enormous quantities of high-grade zinc, which were not available and could not be produced from pure ores in sufficient amounts and in the time required. Redistillation of virgin spelter on a large scale was practiced to supply this demand; this paper gives a full description of the process used by the Oklahoma smelters of the Bartlesville Zinc Co. As the redistillation of zinc has become of historical interest only, having been superseded by the electrolytic process, it was deemed advisable to give expression to this phase of the metallurgy of zinc that, in the past, had never gone beyond laboratory experimentation. THE grades of spelter demanded by the consuming industries were not definitely established until the American Society for Testing Materials undertook to fix specifications, based on the varying percentages of the common impurities (lead, iron, and cadmium) as follows: TOTAL, NOT LEAD, IRON, CADMIUM, OVER. PER PER CENT. PER CENT. PER CENT. CENT. A. High grade 0.07 0.03 0.05 0.10 B. Intermediate 0.20 0.03 0.50 0.50 C. Brass special 0.75 0.04 0.75 1.20 D. Prime western 1.50 0.08 The question which grade was the best for certain purposes and why was left unanswered. The conservatism of the zinc-smelting industry and the unwillingness of the spelter-consuming industries to engage in research work prevented the full benefits being obtained that such standardization promised. The custom smelters, producing spelter in pigs or plates, found it impossible to adhere closely to the established limits on account of the variety of ores treated; and the smelters with long-established and known brands, or those manufacturing their metal into marketable products, like sheet zinc, did not have to abide by the newly established grades based on chemical percentages.

The Societâ Anonima di Miniere e di Alti Fòrni, familiarly known as the " Elba Company," works the rich ore-deposits of the Island of Elba under a long-term contract with the Italian Government. The ore-deposits are scattered over the eastern and southeastern coast; but as these parts of the island are not well provided with ports, the blast-furnaces were built at Porto-ferraio, the principal town of the island, situated on the northern shore, and possessing a magnificent natural harbor where vessels even as large as the battleships of the Italian navy can comfortably anchor. In the selection of Portoferraio the cost of transporting the iron-ore from the different mines to the blast-furnaces has been reduced to a minimum, and shelter has been provided for the company's flotilla of tugs and barges, as well as for the steamers carrjing coal and pig-iron. The whole plant, of which a general view is given in Fig. 1, comprises: 1. A discharging-pier with unloading-cranes. The ore and coal are transported from this pier by means of an aerial cable-railway to the coal- and ore-storage yards. This cable-railway is supported by an iron bridge extending from the pier to the shore and by a wooden trestle extending from the shore to the yards. 2. Blast-furnaces, two in number, with all the accessory apparatus, such as blowing-engines, dry purifiers, Cowper hot-blast stoves, hoists, etc. 3. Coke-ovens, two batteries, with coal-bin, crushers and boilers. 4. Engine-house containing the blast-engines and the electric generating-station. 5. Pumping-plant. 6. Narrow-gauge railways.

"At the end of 2010 the AMSA Esperanza Concentrator started commissioning. Located in the Atacama Desert this project is the first of several large size concentrators developed recently to operate in Northern Chile. In addition to the new operations to be implemented in the short term, many existing installations are planning expansions. The use of large size equipment is one of the common characteristics of the new concentrators, but also new technologies are being considered and innovation is present in most cases. Sea water or desalinated water will be required to process large tonnages of sulphide copper ores as well as gold bearing ores, since process water supply from the Andes will no longer be available. The high cost of sea water or desalinated water supply and the high cost of energy are not a limitation as the current metal market scenario allows obtaining an attractive NPV even from installations designed to process relatively low grade ores. A review of the current concentrators being developed in Chile is presented, including a description of the main design issues related to technology and innovation. An analysis of the Chilean mining industry is also presented, detailing mine and plant capacities as well as expected final products.INTRODUCTION The mining sector in Chile has become a reference when analysing the large concentrator plants projected or currently in operation all over the world. At present and as a consequence of the high price of metal commodities, most South American countries have an active mining sector. Chile is known as a major producer of metals. First records of copper production exported to Spain are dated to the early XVII century. Since then Chile has produced over 13% of the total copper ever produced in the world. After 1990 Chilean mining and the associated cluster of activities has substantially grown to levels never reached before, especially in the production of copper, gold and other non-metallic minerals. This dramatic increase is the result of an economic policy based on delivering comparative advantages and incentives for the admission of foreign capital to offset the weak domestic investment in previous decades. Massive mining of its huge mineral resources has allowed Chile to be a world leader in the production of copper and other base metals and mineral products."

Curved pulp lifters can provide improved discharge performance from SAG mills, especially for the coarser fraction of rocks in the discharge. They also can provide improved wear life of the pulp lifter, especially the base of the pulp lifter and diversion cone, over comparable straight radial pulp lifters. Current experience with curved pulp lifters and associated grates is covered including design issues and discharge performance for both the slurry and rock components of the discharge.

On the bottom of the trough, magnets are placed, and opposite poles of the magnets are oriented outwards. Thickness of the bottom is determined to be sufficient for locking magnetic lines of force of the magnets on each other. The magnets of rectangular plate shape are placed on the rough bottom, covering the whole surface or with spare areas; the magnets are placed across the trough with alteration of rows with the same pole orientation."

The article cited above reflects the difficulty that is often encountered in interpreting different aspects of kriging. Baafi et al. write: "Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense." Their solution to this particular problem is to constrain the kriged estimates to data values that have positive weights, i.e., reduce the subset size contributing to the estimation. As Journel (1986, p. 133) has already observed, "Negative weights are no evil." Indeed, they are an ineluctable result of the Lagrangian multipliers in the system of simultaneous equations. The fact that data distant from the estimation point may be given negative weights simply means that the influence of such distant values must be negated because their influence is contradictory to closer values (as illustrated by Baafi et al. in their Figs. 3 and 4). Of course negative kriging weights applied to distant grade values will not in themselves induce negative grade at some central interpolation point. Negative grade values, rather, seem to be a particular artifact of automatic methods of estimation involving accumulations (Philip and Watson, 1985a, 1985b, 1987b). The elimination of negative weights, suggested by Baafi et al., is likely to exacerbate a quite different problem of kriging and piecewise spline interpolation discussed elsewhere (Philip and Watson, 1987a). In interpolating large data sets of scattered observations, changing local subsets or neighborhoods must be selected automatically. Because of the mathematical formulation of kriging and spline interpolation, discontinuities then occur between closely-spaced estimation points as the subset used in the estimation changes. If this subset is reduced in number and size, the discontinuities will be amplified and more common.

The use of axis charts for representing the texture of cold-rolled thorium sheet was compared with conventional pole figures. Four texture components were deduced from the axis charts and shown to be consistent with the pole figures. It was shown that consideration of the pole figures alone could lead to an apparent component which is the average of two actually present. It was also shown that the spread about the "ideal" textures and the amount of material associated with each could be readily obtained Fom the axis chart method. BECAUSE of the crystallographic nature of the deformation mechanisms in metals, plastic flow results in the alignment of certain crystallographic directions with the primary flow directions. In the study of the "preferred orientation" thus developed, one wishes to discern the distribution of the crystallographic directions with respect to some reference direction, usually a direction related to the fabrication procedure, such as the rolling direction. The pole-figure method, introduced by ever,' involves the plotting of the distribution of the poles of some family of planes on a stereographic projection which places the reference direction(s) at the north pole and/or in the center. By noting the angles between the reference directions and concentrations of poles on several such pole figures, one can deduce the crystallographic directions which are aligned with the reference directions. If the preferred orientation is relatively simple and well-developed, one to three pole figures may be sufficient for obtaining the desired information; if there are several texture components, more pole figures may be needed. A significant improvement in the method of representing the textures in wires and rods resulted from the introduction of the "inverse pole figure" or axis-distribution chart by Harris.2 Such a chart gives directly the distribution of the reference axis relative to the standard stereographic projection. There has been widespread acceptance of this method for the representation of fiber textures, and methods have been proposed for converting observed diffraction intensities into axis densities.2-6 The suggestion by Mitchell and Rowland3 and Jetter, McHargue, and williams5 that sheet textures could be represented as distributions of rolling, normal, and transverse directions have been criticized on the basis that they offer no significant advantage over a combination of two ordinary pole figures and that it has not been proved that sheet textures can be treated as quasi fiber textures.6 If the purpose of a texture determination is to study some property which is related to the orientation of a particular crystallographic plane or direction, then conventional pole figures certainly are sufficient. For example, the distribution of the slip planes in face-centered cubic metals (the (111) pole figure) serves to indicate the variation in mechanical properties of sheet. On the other hand if the study is directed at an understanding of the factors influencing texture formation, it is desirable to know not only the preferred orientation but the kind and degree of spread from it and the relative amounts of material in each component, if there are more than one. Introduction Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites which contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of postmagmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action by residual pegmatitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw materials for ceramic and chemical industries. With the discovery of Searles Lake, brines became new sources of lithium. Indeed, the 1960s may well be referred to as the "brine decade" because several brine bodies of significant economic importance were discovered. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, Nevada, are presently exploited by Foote Mineral Co. The brines of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the Smackover formation, and the Imperial Valley geothermal field, have been defined as important resources of lithium. In South America, new occurrences have been identified in Bolivia and Argentina. At the Salar de Atacama, Chile, new production capacity is scheduled for 1984. Following the termination of the AEC purchase program in 1959, several companies such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp. were forced to close their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminum potlines), the lithium industry grew steadily, and with the potential application of lithium metal in batteries and nuclear reactors, a healthy growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded, reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Geochemistry of Lithium Lithium is the third element in the periodic table. It is the lightest of all the metals, having an atomic weight of 6.938, an ionic radius of 0.68Å and a charge of +1. The geochemistry of lithium has been extensively studied and has been summarized by Rankama and Sahama (1950), Goldschmidt (1937), and Hortsman (1957). The distribution of lithium in igneous rocks is controlled by its size and its charge, and by the (MgO+FeO) / Li2O ratio. In the early stages of crystallization of a magma, that ratio is very large. Consequently, both magnesium and iron are removed by ferromagnesian minerals in preference to lithium which is then concentrated in the residual magma. This results in an enrichment of lithium in silicic rocks and pegmatites (Strock, 1936). Pegmatites are coarse-grained igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of postmagmatic fluids. Minerals within pegmatites may also form by metasomatism (Jahns, 1955). Genetically, the pegmatites are associated with neighboring intrusives. Mineralogically, granitic pegmatites contain feldspar, quartz, and mica as the main constituents and a variety of exotic elements such as lithium, beryllium, tantalum, tin, and cesium, which may or may not occur in economically significant concentrations. Detailed studies by numerous investigators (Cameron et al., 1949, 1954; Hanley et al., 1950; Jahns, 1953, 1955; Page et al., 1953) indicate that pegmatites often exhibit an internal zonal arrangement, with each zone containing a specific suite of minerals. The lithium minerals are usually found in the intermediate zones, and although as many as 13 zones have been recognized by Cameron, et al. (1949), a complete zonal arrangement is rarely found. Over the past 100 years we have witnessed a revolution in permanent magnetic materials. Prior to 1932 electrical machinery depended upon steels for both the soft and the permanent magnet structures. Because permanent magnet steels were easily demagnetized, motors, generators, loudspeakers and similar devices often used the interaction between two electromagnets. Motors and generators were mostly of the induction type, depending for function upon induced fields. The discovery of Alnico in 1931 and its rapid commercialization presaged an expansion of the industrial revolution and today, permanent magnet structures are widely utilized. [ ] DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT MAGNETS Act 1: Early Days of Permanent Magnets Alnico, which stands for aluminum, nickel and cobalt, is a family of alloys with similar structure and processing requirements. Additional elements, such as copper and titanium, are present in minor amounts to optimize magnetic properties. Alnico is known by many trade names around the world including Alcomax, Hycomax, Ticonal, Nipermag, Koerzit, Oerstit, Nialco, etc(1,2,3). In addition to the generic name ?alnico?, it is usually appended with a number representing the magnetic grade.

Technical modification of traditional zinc- and lead-based products is moving the metals into diversification is particularly apparent in two areas. The evolution of diverse types of heavy-duty vehicles that employ lead acid batteries. and The development of Galfan™ -- a zinc / 5% aluminum/mischmetal coating alloy designed to provided zinc-coated anti-corrosion protection in applications that are not well suited to traditional galvanizing. Because any product breakthrough must be accompanied by advancement and customer oriented thinking at every step in the chain of production and distribution, a concerted effort is required for market evolution to live up to its potential. As such, all those involved in the metals industries should not only track the progress made by technical and marketing innovations, they must participate as much as possible in their development and promotion.

The first thought in the case of an accident or contagious disease is naturally that aroused by our humane instinct , how serious is the case and will the person recover ? The economic effects of such cases , owing to their many ramifications , are seldom realized either by those directing mining operations or those engaged in the labor of producing . This paper is based on the accident experience of the State of Utah and the number of cases of two well known preventable diseases , typhoid fever and smallpox , in that State for the fiscal years 1917-1918 , 1918-1919 , 1919-1920 , and 1920-1921 . The data and figures presented are from coal -mining camps only . W. W. Adams , mine- accident statistician of the bureau, contributed valuable corrections and suggestions . The economic results of accidents are considered first , and those of the two preventable diseases later .

The formation of copper thio-complexes in sulfide solutions has been recognized for many years and the measured solubilities of certain copper sulfide minerals attributed to these complexes. Attempts to model this system have proposed either copper(I) or copper(II) thio-complexes, and these have been incorporated into computer programs for generating stability diagrams for the copper-sulfur-water system in order to delineate the region where the reductive dissolution of copper sulfide minerals is likely. In this paper it is proposed that the dissolution of copper from both ore bodies and sulfide tailings can be explained by the formation of the cupro-thio-complexes under anaerobic conditions. Stability diagrams are presented to depict the region and extent of the solubility.

RECENT investigations1-4 have suggested that the total plastic strain, C, for high temperature creep under a given stress can be correlated by means of a temperature-compensated time, te- where t is the duration of test, e is the base of natural logarithms, aH is the activation energy for creep, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. A typical set of data on which this deduction was based is given in Fig. la. Belt conveyors have proven themselves for many years as a dependable and low cost method of moving bulk materials at high flow rates. The success of a belt conveyor system greatly depends on the initial loading of the material on the belt. If the material is loaded on the belt at the center, at the same speed and without impact, then about 90% of all belt conveyor problems would disappear. Proper belt loading is primarily determined by the engineering and design of the conveyor transfer point. Some general design criteria required for proper transfer of materials from one conveyor to another are established and discussed. Specific attention is given to loading chutes and skirting.

Optimal throughput is a key objective for the successful operation of any manufacturing or processing business. In the mining industry in particular, in order to obtain maximum return on the significant capital investment in the physical assets involved, ensuring continuous throughput is a major focus for the complete leadership team. Failure to meet throughput objectives becomes a major source of distraction for management which too often attempts to solve shortfalls by æforcingÆ and æenforcingÆ production targets. This focus on the short term and the lack of attention to addressing root causes frustrates operators who attempt to satisfy unattainable short-term targets and lose sight of the long-term goal. Mount Isa Copper Operations, Xstrata Copper, North Queensland, had ambitious plans to increase throughput volume by ten per cent within a four month period to allow budgets to be achieved within the financial year. To achieve this, the process had to overcome the interplay of a multi-node (æsiloedÆ) production system and its associated inventories, each node, of which on the face of it at least, had more than enough ænameplateÆ capacity to meet these plans. However, the actual volume achieved at the end point of the system was well below this nameplate capacity and the system operated with an extraordinarily high standard deviation. The key issues in terms of making or exceeding plan were: how to substantially reduce the variability of the system and managing the inventories between nodes, how to synchronise throughput between the production nodes, and how to improve the decision-making ability within the process. In this paper, the implementation team has shown that a revolutionary process view of the operation together with appropriate planning decisions allowed increased throughput to be achieved without further capital investment.
