In 2006, a total of 4,573 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 30.7% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,042; 44.7%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=368; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=342; 7.5%).

In 1990, a residential area above the North Outfall Sewer (NOS) tunnel constructed in 1924, experienced subsidence. After sewage was diverted into the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS), soil probing from within the tunnel was conducted, soil-improvement options were developed, and a preferred grouting scheme was analyzed by numerical modeling to evaluate the stability of the 80-year+ old tunnel liner under grouting-induced loading conditions. This paper discusses the initial field investigation and the development and analysis of a grouting scheme originally intended to be implemented before relining of the tunnel. The scheme was later modified, and the new liner was installed before the final probing and grouting work was done.

Geokinetics, Inc. has pioneered an in-situ oil shale retorting production process that provides the requisite void space for producing a permeable rubble bed, within the retort zone, by using the explosive energy from vertical blastholes to lift the overburden. By installing suitable instrumentation on the surface of the overburden over an appropriate blasting pattern, it is possible to obtain estimates of the average radius of gas penetration around the blasthole and the average volume, per unit length of blasthole, that is actually occupied by the explosively produced gases (which includes both the volume of the cracks that are penetrated by the gas pressure and the deformed blasthole volume). It is expected that these estimates can be used to examine, and quantify, the effects of such blast design parameters as the type of explosive, the blasthole diameter, the geometry of the explosive charge (length to diameter ratio), and the relative timing of sets of charges.

The conversion to the use of commercial grade ammonium nitrate (CGAN) for use in blasting at the Utah Copper Pit of the Kennecott Copper Corporation has presented unique problems for the Drilling and Blasting Department, In order to better understand these problems, a' picture of the Bingham Pit might be helpful. Some quarter of a million tons of ore and waste must be blasted daily in order to keep thirty-eight electric shovels operating. All material is blasted by "toe holes" of 24 to 28 feet in depth, drilled from prepared drill grades and sloped so as to bottom approximately 5 feet below the bench level. Horizontal spacing of these holes averages 22 feet, with exceptions being made where faults occur in the bank. These "toe holes" are drilled by 4-inch drifter machines, mounted on self-contained mobile drill units using .3-inch starter bits and bottoming at a minimum of 2 1/2 inches in diameter, "Toe-hole" drilling amounts to about two-thirds of the total drilling. In the higher bank sections of the Mine and wherever necessary, single rows of "down holes" are drilled to 28 feet in depth and spaced, on the average 23 feet apart. These holes are also drilled by a mobile drill. "Down hole" drilling amounts to about one-third of the total drilling.

I wish to submit this discussion item on an article published in the August issue of MINING ENGINEERING by Wala and Altman on the use of canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks. The advent of computer graphics and plotting has enabled complex underground mine layouts to be displayed and plotted in a variety of three-dimensional formats that very closely represent the actual mine layout. This enables the ventilation engineer, who is familiar with the mine, to display the network pressures, quantities, resistances, and fan locations in a way that can be understood by everyone working at the mine. This is important if the ventilation engineer needs to discuss changes in ventilation with production personnel, or escapeway procedures with union personnel. While I can see some of the potential advantages in the canonical ventilation network diagram described by Dr. Wala, it appears to me that the fact that the diagram has no visual equivalence with the actual mine layout means that most mine personnel will find such a diagram almost incomprehensible. The authors have alluded to certain advantages with the canonical diagram. However, I find it difficult to see that these outweigh the fact that almost everything listed can be duplicated in isometric diagrams, and in a manner that is easily understandable to everyone in the mine from the miner to the mine manager. Perhaps the authors could show a clear example comparing an isometric with a canonical portrayal of a mine network showing the information that is immediately available from the canonical network that is not obvious in the isometric diagram. There is in this country a severe problem with the need for ventilation engineering and expertise to be used and accepted by mine management as a necessary part of mine planning. It seems to me that to introduce the requirement for further explanation so that management can understand a canonical network display will hinder more than help the recognition that ventilation engineering needs at so many mines in this country. However, I can see that the canonical approach does have its place in assisting the practicing mine ventilation engineer, wherever he or she exists in the organization chart for a typical mine. In this case, could the authors please indicate the availability of the computer program to compute and plot the canonical diagram for a mine ventilation network.

The mentor/learner model is a time-honored approach to teaching, including within the mining industry. Miners know when they see excellence and have a deep respect for experts in their field. By using expert miners as mentors to other, less-experienced miners, training programs can be developed that will have a legitimacy and credibility that resonates with those being trained. Building upon concepts in current theories of adult education, this paper highlights the unique advantages of using mentoring as a teaching method that can make the educational experience both interesting and effective. Current NIOSH safety training materials use these concepts to deliver effective adult learning experiences for workers in the mining industry.

Washability analysis determines the maximum separation efficiency that can be achieved in the operation of coal preparation plants. Unfortunately, there are no on-line techniques for determining this most fundamental information. It now appears possible to determine coal washability on-line through the use of x-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis. This paper presents the results for the development of a CT-based, on-line coal washability analyzer. The development of appropriate hardware and software necessary to adapt a CT analyzer for use in determining coal washability is discussed. Testing of the analyzer using well-characterized coal samples is presented.

The International Marine Minerals Society has now come of age! Previously known as the International Marine Mining Society, it was an informal group without officers, by-laws or official status. Despite the lack of formal structure, the Society has cosponsored symposia both in Europe and in North America including the 16th Annual Underwater Mining Institute in Halifax, Nova Scotia, last year. The roster of members is now sufficient to emerge as a fledgling professional society. To this end an ad hoc committee was appointed to prepare by-laws stating the objectives of the Society, provide the procedures for the election of officers and other guidelines essential for the operation of the organization. This paper briefly summarizes the history of the group, the by-laws, together with membership requirements.

The plant and quarries of the Inland Portland Cement Co. are located at Metaline Palls, Wash., about 128 miles north of Spokane, on the Pend Oreille river, and within 10 miles of the Canadian border. The plant is one of a chain of cement plants controlled by the Lehigh Portland Cement Co., of Allentown, Pa. Work on this plant was commenced in June, 1910, and was completed in April, 1911, but on account of some delays in the construction of the power plant, the works were not put into operation until August, 1911. Since then it has been in continuous operation and has furnished the Inland Empire with a high grade of cement. Fig. 1 is a view and Fig. 2 is a plan of the works. Water Power Development.—The source of the water supply for the hydro-electric plant of the Inland Portland Cement Co. is Sullivan lake, a body of water approximately 5.5 miles long and' 0.5 mile wide, situated in the Kaniksu Forest Reserve. A wooden crib dam was installed so as to raise the elevation of the lake 25 ft., and the additional storage capacity was taken up by the diversion of Sullivan creek into the lake by means of a wooden flume, 0.25 mile long, 6 by 8 ft. in cross-section, and a ditch 1,200 ft. long. The water from the lake follows the natural water course to an intermediate storage reservoir, which was created by the construction of an earthen dam. This pond was used in connection with the saw mill which was installed at this point. Besides the earth dam, there was also built a crib, at the point shown in the sketch map, Fig. 3. This crib dam is 35 ft. high. From this point the excess water follows the natural course of Sullivan creek to the Pend Oreille river. Mining mobile equipment is becoming larger in order to lower operation cost and increase productivity; however, their performance characteristics are often limited by the tire capabilities. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of tire research, the lack of comprehensive knowledge on tire performance characteristics impedes the advancement of off-the-road tires. Longer haul roads, and a severe operating environment make tires more vulnerable than other components of a vehicle. Furthermore, due to a limited availability of large tires, mines are facing shortages. Thus mines and tire service companies are keen to improve tire performance, extend tire life and hence lower operating costs. This paper reviews the relevant tire performance research, analyzes tire interactions with the surrounding environment, tire maintenance practices and operational issues using a case study based on data collected during an ongoing project with Fountain Tire.

IN a paper1 before this Institute in 1940, the writer reported that the surface orientation texture of zinc and cadmium differed from the texture existing within the casting, in that basal planes were parallel to the surface. He was unable to rationalize the origin of this surface texture. It is conceivable that the surface orientation texture is influenced by the atomic force fields, which are different at the surface and within the body of metal. It was considered that a radical change in the surface against which the metal is cast might alter the surface texture. In trial of this, zinc has been cast against a surface of molten lead, but the same result has been obtained-i.e., (001) parallel, ±20°, to the surface-as was obtained when it was cast against air, Transite or iron.1 Into the bottom of an open cast-iron tray, 7 by 14 in. by 2 in. deep, preheated to about 275°C., about ¼ in. of lead, then) ½ in. of zinc was poured, and the whole was covered with an electric heater to enforce freezing from the bottom upward. After a lapse of time sufficient for the zinc but not the lead to solidify, the zinc slab was raised free of the molten lead. The bottom surface of the zinc casting was coated with a thin layer of lead. A specimen of the slab 1 ½ in. square was metallographically polished to flatten it and remove the slight film of lead, and the orientation was determined by the method used before,1 with the result stated above. Some determinations have also been made on other metals, as follows: Surface orientation determinations were made on the 3/8-in. diameter grip section of two ¼ -in, diameter aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bars and on a 1/8 by ½ -in. flat aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bar. None of these three aluminum die castings exhibited any preferred orientation at-the surface. A brass die casting (nominal composition: 60 Cu, 37.75 Zn, 1.00 Sn, 1.00 Pb, 0.10 Al, 0.15 Si) furnished by C. S. Smith was also examined. The surface showed a random orientation of alpha and beta. SUMMARY A zinc casting solidified against a molten lead surface was found to have the same surface orientation texture, (001) parallel to the surface, as other zinc and cadmium castings. THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the equilibrium diagram of the lithium-magnesium pair as a first step in studying the possible usefulness of these alloys as ultra-light structural materials. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE The behavior of lithium towards magnesium was first investigated by Masing and Tammann.(I)? In order to prevent oxidation the alloys were made in iron tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen; temperatures were measured with a glass-protected thermocouple. These investigators found that lithium and magnesium form two series of solid solutions separated by a miscibility gap between 85 and 95 per cent magnesium; that the alloys with 81 and 95 per cent magnesium showed a homogeneous structure under microscopic examination, while the alloy with 89 per cent magnesium contained two distinguishable crystallites; that the curve indicating the beginning of crystallization rises from the melting point of lithium to that of magnesium; and that no compounds of lithium and magnesium are formed. The equilibrium diagram was not plotted because no definite data were obtained for determining the solidus and the posi-tion of the miscibility gap in the solid state. The difficulties encountered in this investigation were: (1) that it was necessary to heat them as high as the melting point of magnesium in order to obtain homogeneous melts; at such temperatures the alloys attacked the glass protecting the thermo-couple; and (2) that at temperatures above 400° C. the lithium united

In these troubled times free enterprise is maintaining vital molybdenum output, while expanding plant, and bringing in new low grade ore reserves, at Climax, the world's largest known molybdenum deposit. Climax Molybdenum Co. is putting $25 million into additional surface plant facilities and other millions into underground development. The expansion program to be operating by 1954 includes a new mining level, crushing plant, 4000-ft conveyor, milling units, by-products plant, and housing for 198 families. Completion of this program and low grade plant will add 10,000 tons per day to present capacity and several million tons to ore reserves.

Qualitative and interpretive information as obtained from geological and/or geophysical studies, in addition to precise measurement, is incorporated into the estimation process through an indicator variable. The indicator conditioned estimator is formulated as a cokriging, and its expression is data value dependent as opposed to that of the traditional kriging estimators. The solution of the dual cokriging system provides simultaneously an estimate of the unknown and an estimate of the conditional probability that the unknown belongs to a specific population or class. Being an unbiased and minimum-error-variance estimator by construction, the indicator conditioned estimator is better in the least square sense than the ordinary kriging estimator because it uses additional information carried by the indicator data. A case study using a large reference database is presented; the indicator conditioned estimates have a smaller conditional bias and a smaller error variance than the ordinary kriging estimates. The results also showed that the indicator conditioned estimator is more efficient for selection in mining.

COPPER ore from Kennecott Copper's Ray mine, about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix, Ariz., is concentrated at the company's mill at Hayden, some 18 miles south of the mine. The Hayden mill is currently treating 16,000 tons of ore per day by flotation, using raconite, a crude butyl xanthate, as a collector for the sulfide copper minerals and lime as a pyrite depressant.1 The ore contains significant amounts of nonsulfide copper minerals, but recovery of these values has been low. The Hayden mill is now being modified to provide for treatment of future ores by leach- precipitation-flotation (L-P-F). This modification, costing about $5 million, is expected to reduce the loss of nonsulfide copper values and improve overall copper recovery by an additional 2 lb per ton of ore.

Beginning in 1906, data has been compiled on the distribution of uranium in phosphate de- posits. Particular emphasis has been placed on uranium in phosphate by a number of geologists and geochemists in the US Geological Survey in research sponsored by the US Atomic Energy Commission (now Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) during the 30-year period from 1951 to 1981. A comprehensive study of uraniferous phosphate resources the United States and the Free World was completed, under the auspices of DOE, in 1979. Apatite is the main carrier of uranium in phosphate. Uranium generally replaces calcium in the mineral lattice. In marine phosphorite throughout the world, the uranium content is characteristically in the range of 0.005 to 0.02% by weight. Phosphorite takes in uranium by structural substitution in apatite or other mineral phases, by absorption, or by the formation of independent mineral phases. Apatite derived from the interaction of ground water, guano and limestone is typically relatively low in uranium content-in the 0.001 to 0.005% range. In primary accessory apatite of igneous rocks, as well as magmatic and metasomatic apatite segregations of alkalic rocks and carbonatite, uranium content is generally between 0.001 and 0.01%. The integration of the ESZ orebody and DOZ orebody resulted in a much larger footprint than the original DOZ Mine shape. The significant change in footprint geometry presented new cave front management challenges, specifically: longer undercut drifts. Using a constant blasting rate, more time is required to complete caving in each drift which ultimately influences the number of active faces at any point in time. The number of manageable active drifts is controlled by the planned square-meters of undercut blasting, lead/lag restrictions and other specific conditions such as the need to blast pre-charged explosives. In early 2008, an evaluation of the existing plan showed that significantly more active undercut drifts and longer cave fronts would occur in the next five years. Difficulties associated with the long cave fronts led to a decision to redesign the caving sequence. Several different boundary options based on operational, geotechnical and ore grade parameters were investigated. This paper describes the issues faced with long cave fronts, the constraints and requirements to effectively manage the caving sequence and the options considered to mitigate this situation.

Mathematical modeling of bioremediation has gained importance as it is used as an optimization tool for the remediation process involved in contaminated sites. The bioremediation of Cr(VI) has been studied taking into consideration the initial Cr(VI) concentration Cr(VI)ini, bacterial growth substrate concentration (S), maximum growth rate (µmax), yield coefficient (Y), half saturation constant (Ks), and inhibition constant (KI). As the enzymatic reaction is also affected by initial substrate concentration (Sini) and Ks, different ratios of (Ks/Sini) are analyzed. As the inhibition constant (KI) is not constant for all the enzyme reactions and it varies with Cr(VI)ini, the correlation between (KI) and Cr(VI)ini is developed. A set of differential equations pertaining to bioremediation of Cr(VI) has been solved using FORTRAN 90 program adopting the model developed. The results are verified with the experimental data from the literature and a good correlation has been obtained between the experimental data and the model predictions. Este trabalho analisou o caso de emprego de um consumível constituído de aço carbono (ER 70S3) para realizar a soldagem de tubos ASTM A333, empregados em baixas temperaturas, ao invés de empregar consumíveis especiais especificados para emprego em baixas temperaturas, tal como o ER 80S Ni2. Os três pontos centrais considerados neste trabalho foram: (1) compatibilidade entre os materiais envolvidos; (2) análise das características específicas do aço, no grau empregado e do projeto da tubulação e; (3) longevidade da linha, que pode ser prejudicada a longo prazo pelas variações químicas dos metais envolvidos que poderiam induzir corrosão localizada.

Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.
