"The paper presents the results of a laboratory study, conducted at the Experimental Road Laboratory of the University of Padova, in order to verify the possibility to use different types of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel slags – in substitution of the natural aggregates – in the composition of both dense graded and porous asphalt mixes for flexible road pavements. The research has been articulated in a preliminary study of the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of the EAF steel slags, and in the following mix design and performance characterization of the bituminous concretes, through stiffness modulus tests at various temperatures and permanent deformation (creep) tests. All the mixtures with EAF slags have satisfied the requisites for acceptance standardized for the road sector, thus resulting as suitable for use in the construction of infrastructures, moreover presenting higher mechanical characteristics than those of the corresponding asphalts with full natural aggregate. IntroductionSteel is produced industrially employing two main technologies: the integral cycle, which starts from mineral iron, and the electric cycle, which uses scrap metal. A consistent amount of the steel produced in Italy (approx. 55%) comes from Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), which every year, alongside the steel, produce approximately 2 million tons of slag. The recycling of this waste product to produce new high-quality raw materials would reduce both the exploitation of limited natural resources and the amounts of refuse. In the European Union, 60% of slag from EAF is still today disposed of in dumps. The extremely diverse origins of scrap metal (waste from mechanical manufacturing, industrial and civil demolition, car bodywork, etc.) means that the by-products generated by the smelting, slags and ashes, contain different elements, in varying composition, also depending on the type of steel to be produced and the consequent adding of binding and melting elements during the production process. For this reason, iron and steel industry electric furnace slag - unlike the blast furnace dross utilised in cement works, which has a more uniform composition as it comes from a more standardised cycle – has been viewed in the past with some diffidence and so, at least in Italy, the possibilities of its re-use have never been fully developed."

The Australian coal industry is characterised by efficient fines recovery, and the climate does not dictate the use of thermal drying. With the increasing trend to underground mining and hence finer ROM coal, and market pressures for reduced product moistures, dewatering issues are assuming increasing importance in the Australian coal industry. The greatest potential gains in dewatering performance undoubtedly lie in the treatment of finely sized material. This paper examines the dewatering issues which have been recognised by the Australian coal industry, and describes current Australian research in this field.

Different materials are used for manufacturing various parts of a cellular phone. Considering that a great number of mobile phones are being discarded every year, it is important to recover these materials and then recycle them in order to save resources. The primary objective of this work is therefore to find and suggest ways on how to recover various materials from discarded cellular phones for recycling. Much effort, for example, has been put in recovering and recycling tin oxide (ITO), a mixture of indium (III) oxide, (UI2O3) and tin(IV) oxide from the discarded liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Here we report a simple and cost-effective process, which includes a HC1 treatment process for altering the structure of the indium (III) compound into a chlorideinduced indium compound, in order to facilitate the vaporization of indium at a relatively low temperature. The experimental results indicated that 96.2 % of indium can be recovered from ITO, when the sample was heated at 973 K for 90 minutes. In addition, some thermodynamic calculations were also carried out in order to better understand the mechanism for chlorideinduced vaporization of indium.

"Interest in the recovery of cyanide from gold and silver plant tailings has heightened in recent years. This interest has been spurred by several factors:Increasingly stringent regulations throughout the gold producing world, governing discharge limits for free and total cyanide to tailings ponds and the environment.The increasing cost of active chemical treatment versus passive (natural degradation) treatment of tailing, to bring them in line with environmental regulations.The worldwide trend to processing of more complex gold ore bodies, which is usually accompanied by higher levels of cyanide consumptions and greater concentrations of cyanide (particularly the copper cyanide complex) in tailings.The growing negative perception of the general public for the gold mining industry, due to several highly publicized cyanide spills in recent years (breaches of tailings dams, accidents involving trucks carrying cyanide to gold plants, etc.).The ability to recover cyanide from gold plant tailings has been known almost as long as the cyanidation process has been practiced, but there has been little incentive to process tailings in this way in the past. With the development of technologies that make it possible to recover and recycle free or complexed cyanide directly from gold plant slurry tailings, which indicates, on paper at least, the potential for significant cost savings compared to cyanide destruction, coupled with the introduction of legislation to seriously limit the discharge of cyanide to the environment in most gold-producing regions of the world, many companies are evaluating the cyanide-recovery alternative."

Declining from surface provides access, haulageway, ventilation and provision for ser- vices for stoping and development. Three boom jumbos and 3.8 m3 capacity diesel loaders are used in decline development, the majority of which is driven at a gradient of 1 in 9. Primary ventilation is drawn from the mine through raisebored airways and high pressure contra rotating fans provide secondary ventil- ation. To meet schedules a special decline crew was formed on similar lines to a mining con- tractor. The basis of payment for the mining party was changed and the net effect was to accelerate development. Ground conditions demand constant support and this is achieved with chemical anchor rock bolts, multistrand grouted bolts and shotcrete. Major local shear zones are encountered and when they are to be driven through, a combina- tion of the above methods, involving a spiling technique, is used.

"Countercurrent solvent extraction is the dominant industrial rare earth separation method. For the rare earth separation, with low separation factors and multiple components, designing and optimization plays an important role in reaching product quality and reducing separation plant costs. Based on the theory of countercurrent extraction, cost-efficient methods, such as third-outlet separation and hyperlinked extraction processing, have been introduced following computer simulation. The consumption and fixed investment of industrial practice are compared, by which advantages of the optimized rare earth separation process are indicated. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths (RE) have outstanding optical, magnetic and electric properties in advanced material applications and have therefore received much international attention in recent years. Liquid-liquid extraction is the major industrial RE separation method and is widely used in the industry. Supported by the government and with collaboration from the institutions and enterprises, China has made great progress in RE separation, and has become the dominant supplier of separated RE products. Complicated by multiple elements and low separation factors, careful design of RE separation processes is vital for the quality and cost of production. The theory of separation is the key to basic of flowsheet design and industrial applications.BASIC SEPARATION PROCESS AND THEORYGeneral ProcessAcidic extractants such as P507, P204 and naphthenic acid, are the most popular extractants in modern RE separation industry. In the general separating process, the extractant is saponified with a base, then ion-exchanged with RE solutions, thereby to provide stable and high RE loading in the extractant to fulfill the requirement of production quantity and quality. The RE-loaded extractant is then countercurrently extracted and scrubbed with RE solutions and the RE element thereby is purified. After the countercurrent extraction process, the RE-loaded extractant is stripped with acid to obtain an aqueous RE product, and prepare the extractant for recycling (Xu, 1995)."

Production blasting of Dc Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, Koffiefontein and Finsch Mines involves both uphole trough rings of 9 to I I holes and near vertical 360 degree compound rings of 42-54 holes. The rate of production from these stages is dependent upon being able to achieve a specified fragmentation size range and this has driven the derivation of blasting practices to consistently achieve this target fragmentation. At the Dutoitspan Mine, in Kimberley, where mining of the kimberlite pipe is by block caving, 100 per cent extraction of the undercut level by ring blasting is essential. If this is not achieved, pillars are formed which not only inhibit the efficient initiation of the caving process, but also concentrates load onto the extraction level, causing damage to draw points and pillars. These two case studies demonstrate the importance of achieving optimum blasting performance for downstream mining efficiency; ie fragmentation for increased productivity at Koffiefontein Mine and 100 per cent undercut extraction for efficient initiation of the caving process at the Dutoitspan Mine. The case studies also serve to highlight the long road towards blast optimisation taken by De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd (Koffiefontein. Finsch, Premier and Kimberley Mines) since 1989.

THE mine and milling plant of Demonstration Gold Mines, Ltd., is near the city limits of Baguio, Mt. Province, P. I. The mine road connects with the main highway to Manila. The nearest railway point is near sea level, approximately 40 miles distant. The Baguio district is very mountainous and has one of the heaviest rainfalls in the world. It is therefore difficult to maintain roads or to impound tailings and mine dumps. All supplies are trucked into the district direct from Manila or the nearest railway point, which means uncertain deliveries and high freight rates. Installation of equipment is difficult and costly. The average elevation at the mine is 4000 ft. and the climatic condi-tions.are ideal except for a three months rainy season. The company generates its own power for mining and milling opera-tions with three 400-hp. Ruston Diesel engines direct connected to 250-kw. General Electric alternating current generators. Labor conditions have been excellent, although at present social security laws are causing some unrest. Labor receives a higher average wage rate in this district than other labor in the Islands. The com-pany also furnishes free living quarters, hospitalization and work-men's compensation. Taxation has been reasonable up to the present time, but some of the new mining legislation may make it difficult to operate and pay dividends. The future depends largely upon the continuation of $35 gold and the political outcome in the Islands.

The value of mineral production in Alabama increased 1 percent above the record high set in 1965. Alabama ranked second among the States in the production of bauxite, third in the production of masonry cement, native asphalt, and scrap mica, sixth in the production of portland cement, ninth in the production of iron ore, and tenth in the production of lime. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and stone, the manufacturing of cement, and the production of crude petroleum. These industries accounted for 87 percent of the State's total value of mineral production, compared with 85 percent in 1965.

The present paper represents a preliminary investigation of the ultimate structure of iron-bearing materials which have been subjected to heat treatment for the purpose of agglomerating the fines, or for chemical changes, or for both. Primarily, the object of this inquiry was to determine the relation of the microstructure of each of these materials to its specific susceptibility to the action in the blast-furnace. It is hoped that this small contribution will serve as a nucleus to a line of research that will throw some light upon the debated questions involved in blast-roasting. Thus far the investigation has been conducted along lines of analogy of known principles, rather than through the application of any well-defined system of microscopic petrography. This is obviously due to the fact that we are dealing with ma-terials which are the artificial products of a new art, rather than with the natural materials from which the essence of the pure science has been evolved. In the limited time allowed for this research, it has been conducted upon those materials the chemical content of which allows of their use commercially in the blast-furnace. The following microphotographs are arranged in the order of the degree of complete fusion to which the mass in question has been subjected, in effectively binding the particles together. A very notable fact here clearly demonstrated is that the degree of fusion to which the material has been subjected is inversely proportional to the reducibility of the product. The characteristic of the material under consideration to which reducibility is almost universally attributed call be progressively traced in the following arrangement, through the identity of the obvious microscopic constituent. Furthermore, the degree of fusion to which a bod? has been subjected is recorded in the presence of resultant products of fusion in that body. Such readjustment is generally apparent

Some years ago, when I was seeking an illusive fortune and gaining a precarious existence in the primeval forests of Brazil, there penetrated, even to my headquarters in that far-off land, the story of a new-found mining district, where mountain peaks were ribbed with silver, and valleys teemed with virgin gold. Such were the stories that caused hundreds of men to seek their fortune in Sierra Mojada, and to return heaping curses, loud and deep, upon the vivid imaginations that had evolved the glittering fiction. Nevertheless, the rumors had some foundation of truth. The ribs of silver exist, if not the placers of gold; and a flourishing town, of some three thousand people, with two leading mining companies and several smaller ones, in operation, represents what was permanent in the excitement of 1879. Geographical Situation. The town of Sierra Mojada is situated in the State of Coahuila, Republic of Mexico, in latitude 27' 24' N., and longitude 26' 40' W. of Washington, 4' 36' W. of the City of Mexico, and 103' 43' TV. of Greenwich. It lies about 70 miles, in an air-line, N. E. of Escalon station, on the Mexican Central Railroad; but by the present wagon-road, which makes a long detour to turn the mountain range, the distance to the station is about 105 miles. The nearest towns are Huajuquilla, in the State of Chihuahua, about 125 miles due west, and Cuatro Cienegas, in the State of Coahuila, 112 miles to the eastward. Between these points and the town of Sierra Mojada, and to the north of this town, the country is an immense desert, entirely uncultivated, almost uninhabited, and very little known. This

Dowding, Reynard and Associates Mineral Projects (DRAMP) was approached by the ARM/Lion Ore JV during July 2006 to conduct a feasibility study and control budget estimate for a new greenfield project for their NKOMATI Nickel mine 45 km east of Machadadorp. The scope included the evaluation and review of previous studies as well as a techno-economic trade-off on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous milling. The following document encapsulates the thought process, decisions and the references used in selecting the final comminution route for the new 375 ktpm MMZ concentrator. Apart from the pilot test work performed, design simulations from a number of sources, performance results from a recently commissioned 100 ktpm MMZ concentrator, together with an understanding of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody and possible variations in the characteristics of the orebody over the life of mine were assessed. The results from all the above-mentioned work indicated that it would be possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding (ABC-type) circuit. Autogenous milling is generally considered to be one of the higher risk milling circuits. This is mainly due to the fact that the ore, which is utilized as the grinding media, could be variable in terms of hardness and mineralogy/geology. Nevertheless, it is a very popular route as the cost benefits, more specifically the operating cost, are normally very attractive. This is especially the case when large low grade orebodies are evaluated. In North/South America, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits have been successfully employed during the past 20 years on large scale low grade operations. Taking all the above factors into account, the DRA/Nkomati project team recommended an autogenous circuit with the option to add steel to both the primary and secondary mills (if required) for the new operation in order to create the opportunity for significant operating cost savings. One has to bear in mind that all the new design simulations and decisions are based on previous work and potential unknown variations within the orebody will never be fully understood until the pit is operational for some time.

In 14-karat gold alloys, as in 10-karat gold alloys,3 the addition of such metals as zinc, nickel, copper and silver produces a wide range of physical and chemical properties such as color, hardness, corrosion resistance and melting points. These important factors made gold alloys desirable in the optical work and for jewelry. In 14-karat gold alloys, as well as in 10-karat or 12-karat, it is possible to have two golds of the same color, one of which will corrode more than the other, although it may be harder. Some of these alloys have been investigated by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise,= and L. Sterner Rainer.4 In this group of alloys the gold content of 58.3 per cent (14-karat) was held constant, while the copper varied from 36 to 24 per cent. The balance of the alloy consisted of one, two, or three of the metals silver, zinc, and nickel. All the alloys were melted in an induction furnace and cast into an ingot that measured 3 by 1/4 by 3/4 in. The method of determining the melting points, color determinations and acid test have been discussed in previous papers by the author.2, 3 It is necessary to use small test bars (Fig. I). The tensile bars were annealed at 1300oF. for 20 min. and then air-cooled. There being a very marked drop when the yield point was reached, "the drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point. Alloys Gold-copper.zilzc A~loys.—Gold-copper-zinc alloys melt, cast, and labricate easily. The low melting points, however, limit their use to some extent. The physical properties of these alloys are not entirely satisfactory. When the ultimate strength is satisfactory, the elongation and reduction of area are too low (Table I). Gold-copper-sinr-nickel A lloys.—In this group of alloys, in which zinc and nickel replace copper in approximately equal parts (Table I), the yield point, hardness, and ultimate strength increase with the increase of zinc and nickel content, while the reduction of area and elongation decrease. The physical properties are desirable, particularly of the white gold alloys. The alloys of this group are not difficult to cast and fabricate, and most of these colors could be used commercially. Canada is a world leader in uranium exploration, but many deposits are located in remote regions making exploration targeting challenging. Novel approaches are needed to detect the presence of large-scale ore-forming systems and to vector toward mineralization. Boron is commonly used as a key pathfinder element associated with sandstone/unconformity-hosted and basement-hosted uranium deposits in the Athabasca Basin, but the genetic relationship remains uncertain. Alteration assemblages containing boron geochemical anomalies are commonly spatially-associated with – and possibly coeval with – uranium mineralization. Boron is commonly found in tourmaline minerals but in some portions of ore deposits the host mineral for the anomalous boron remains cryptic. Boron coordination chemistry within alteration haloes can better constrain boron host mineralogy, provide insight into the nature of the boron-uranium relationship, and thus has the potential to better constrain targets for exploration. Synchrotron-source X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is a direct, element-specific analysis that identifies boron coordinated in both trigonally- (BO3) and tetrahedrally-coordinated (BO4) forms. This makes XANES uniquely suited for identifying the geochemical hosts for boron that may be related to hydrothermal ore forming processes. XANES spectroscopy was conducted on whole-rock assay powders from uranium deposits across the Athabasca basin containing boron concentrations ranging from <10 ppm to >10,000 ppm. XANES directly identifies the relative amount of trigonally- (BO3) and tetrahedrally-coordinated (BO4) boron in these complex mineralogical mixtures. Our work suggests a link between boron and uranium that is likely related to the unique physiochemical characteristics of ore bearing fluids that may provide a unique vector to mineralization.

A remote reading dual height telltale system has been developed to provide mine management with early warning of impending roof failure. This system is a logical development from the visual dual height and triple height telltales which are increasingly being used worldwide for routine monitoring of mine roof. The paper describes the principles and history of telltales from their origins in France, their refinement and routine use in the UK and their subsequent spread around the world. They are now being used in various forms in USA, Canada, Germany, Spitzbergen (Norway), Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Australia, South Africa, Mexico, India, Egypt and China. The remote reading telltale system has coal mine intrinsic safety approval in Europe and the United States (MSHA) and the first commercial system was installed in a German colliery at the beginning of the year. Up to 100 dual height telltales can be connected, in a simple "daisy chain" configuration, to each of 4 underground interrogation units. These are connected through a twisted pair link to a surface computer which displays the readings, updates the database, generates warnings and provides the user interface. The paper describes the features and principles of operation of the system which differs considerably from conventional mine-wide monitoring systems. A European Community funded research programme is currently underway with the aim of developing improved alarm generating algorithms including evaluation of interfacing a neural network to the system. The paper concludes by exploring other potential applications of the system for ground control monitoring currently in development, including extensometry, stope closure monitoring and support load measurement.

"Arsenic has been recently quoted at 10 1/2 - 11 cents per pound, an increase over the prevailing price of last fall, when arsenic was cents, as against pre-war prices around 4 cents is evidently a sustained demand for this material. The following statements are intended to summarize briefly some particulars regarding arsenic.Commercial arsenic is the white arsenious oxide (As203). This is the form in which it is generally marketed, as the uses of arsenic demand its industrial application in this form. Arsenic as an element finds rather restricted use in the hardening of lead shot, ere it is to some extent replacing the use of antimony, while white arsenic is employed in a variety of manufacturing processes, chief of which is the manufacture of insecticides and sprays. The poisonous nature of most arsenic compounds, the commonly known ones being paris green and lead arsenate, and its relative cheapness, make arsenic a material suitable for this purpose. The stimulation of agriculture during the war greatly increased the demand for arsenical insecticide. Glass making consumes a large amount of arsenic as it has been impart increased brilliancy to the glass. Crude commercial arsenic is often used to kill weeds along railroad tracks. Arsenious oxide is used also for preserving hides, while the disulphide, AS2S2), finds an application in dehairing hides for the finest grade leather, as it least affects the product. Orpiment (As233), is used in textile dyeing. Wall paints and wall paper formerly consumed considerable arsenic in the form of paris green, but this use has been largely,given up due to the poisonous nature of the dust from the product. Sodium arsenate for a similar reason, is now little used in printing where it had found application.
