THE hydraulic properties exhibited by the calcination products of certain limestones were recognized at an early datemore than 2000 years ago. It was known that calcined limestone with the addition of other minerals would react with water and produce an insoluble and stable product. This material could be cast in desired forms or could be used as a cement for the unification of other materials in large masses or for bonding brick or masonry structures. Cements are essentially mineral glues and it is their ability to unify other materials plus their fluidity when first mixed with water, enabling the mass to assume any desired shape, that has made them so extraordinarily useful to modern industry. Like other glues, cements do not exhibit their maximum strength when used alone and only when mixed with proper aggregates do their optimum properties appear. The resulting concrete, a mixture of cement, mineral aggregates and frequently of reinforcing steel, exhibits the most desirable properties of the individual constituents with regard to tensile strength, stability and permanence. The speed with which such mixtures can be -prepared and installed in place with mechanical equipment has facilitated their adoption by the engineering profession concerned with the construction industries. The development and application of improved methods of manufacture have resulted in such economies that the finished product can be sold at a remarkably low price. In addition, the necessary raw materials are of such common occurrence and wide geographic distribution that the manufacture of cement was established in 34 of the 48 states by 1946. Plants under construction will add to this number. In recent years the industry has been characterized by the development of a number of new cements designed to possess special properties essential for use in unusual environments. These have introduced the use of some new raw materials and also have complicated the processes of manufacture. In the following pages, the major varieties of cement of commercial importance are treated in the chronological order of their appearance on the market.

A process has been developed for leaching copper, lead and calcium from molybdenite concentrate. The leachant is a solution containing an oxidizing chloride (e. g., CuC12, FeC13) and an alkaline earth metal chloride (e. g., CaC12). Cupric chloride and ferric chloride, in the presence of 20-30% calcium chloride, are effective oxidants for chalcopyrite and galena. Calcium chloride, in addition to promoting the rate of leaching, serves to lower the solution pH and raise the boiling point. Leaching for two hours at 110'~ with a 1 % CuC12-10% FeC13- 30% CaC12 solution results in the extraction of up to 98% of the copper in molybdenite, 98% of the lead, and 79% of the calcium. Less than 0. 5% of the molybdenum is dissolved. The leach solution can be rapidly and effectively regenerated with gaseous chlorine and recycled. Build-up of copper and lead in the leach solution is controlled by discarding about 30% of the leach solution each cycle.

Samples of cobalt and bismuth concentrates produced from the NICO deposit in Northwest Territories were subjected to a comprehensive metallurgical testwork consisting of: pressure oxidation, ferric chloride leach and carbon in leach, to recover the cobalt, bismuth and gold, respectively. A specific testwork program was designed to allow for the optimization of process parameters under multiple restrictive criteria. The overall objective was to establish leaching sequences that could produce acceptable recoveries while generating environmentally disposable residues as well as solutions suitable for further processing. The recoveries for the leaching stage, under the optimum conditions, were 97% for cobalt and 95% for gold, in the case of the cobalt concentrate. The bismuth concentrate produced recoveries of 99% for bismuth, 99% for cobalt and 97% for gold, respectively

CHAIRMAN LITTLEJOHN: Some of the members will want to question Mr. Farnham on some of the things he has brought tip, so we will throw the meeting open for discussion. I am quite sure Mr. Farnham will be willing and glad to answer any questions that may be put to him. MR. HOLMAN: I would like to ask Mr. Farnham a question in regard to the Duckbill: How wide a face will it operate without moving the bill? MR. FARNHAM: The Duckbill is a device that was developed in the Union Pacific Mine at Rock Springs, within the last few months, and it is shaped something like, a dustpan, with discharge throat in the rear. They made one seven feet wide and found it was too wide, and the one they are using now is between three and four feet in width. The front section of the conveyor, which attaches to the duckbill, meshes into it to form a sliding section, and the front end of the Duckbill is pushed by the upper segments. I saw one used in a room twenty-four feet wide, and they drew it back after they cleaned out one room and pushed it forward again. MR. HOLMAN: You have no arrangement other than ratchet work? MR. FARNHAM: The ratchet is for forward working and back; the sections are made 12 or 13 feet long, and the stroke of the conveyor automatically works the ratchet; they can ratchet it back; it is a hand device. MR. HOLMAN: They just swing the end of the conveyor across the face to pick up the loose coal? MR. FARNHAM: Yes; they are also planning to use it endwise along the panel face, that and the room work both are quite new in their application, and I do not think the Union Pacific is giving out any results as yet, because the system has not been in use long. MR. HOLMAN: We are planning on putting one in very shortly. MR. HALL: I understand they can swing it over 30 degrees one way or the other, and it goes the same way easily because of the continual jar of the back and forward motion on a 60-degree swing. SECRETARY SHUBART: Take on a comparatively long conveyor, you can get quite a sweep, a large part of the circle. The Duckbill could command quite a large range. For a 12-foot entry, take a four-foot wide advance through the middle of the shot coal, with a 12-foot advance, ratchet back, swing the Duckbill to the rib and repeat; but I do not think they could get as much as 60 degree. on the end of the Duckbill without curving further back. The conveyor is light and not normally set on any permanent foundation. I saw one of Mr. McCarty's first machines, a rather rudimentary one, clean tip a 12-trot entry, 21 tons of coal, in 16 minutes, three men at the face and one at the loading end. MR. FARNHAM: The average time to clean the entries is about an hour-to clean up good-it wouldn't take but a short time; that is why they get this record of several cuts a shift. CHAIRMAN LITTLEJOHN: Are there any other questions you would like to ask Mr. Farnham? MR. HOLMAN: We were discussing this entry driving in regard to the entry loader; an entry loader in advance work, just what you have to do to place the jackbars with the sheave-blocks? Do you dig along the ribs after the coal is shot or do you have any other scheme that could be worked out to a good advantage? MR. FARNHAM: This record is a report I have just received from our Chicago office, without the full details, which I have written for. I am sorry I cannot give you the details. This was an Indiana or Pennsylvania mine, near Pocahontas, not the one where they had an accident. I assume they set the jacks ahead and swung and dumped the coal partly out with a scoop and partly by hand, but the application for that for entry driving is entirely new. The reports stated that they anticipated using that as a standard method of entry driving in the future. I will be glad to see that you get a copy of it when I get the report completed. MR. The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The parameters affecting the adsorption of silver on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of cations and anions as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial silver concentration in the solution and other factors. The recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions was found to be not so effective as the case with gold reported earlier. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rather fast initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

An important requirement in every geological quality control program is that the identity and grades of the control samples (duplicates, certified reference materials (CRMs), and blanks) must remain æblindÆ to the analytical laboratory. Once the entity to be controlled is aware of relevant details of the control process, such as the identity of the control samples, the objectivity may be lost and the control may no longer be completely valid. Whereas the blind insertion of field duplicates and coarse blanks can be easily conducted at site, simultaneously with the sampling process, the rest of the control samples should be inserted into the batches during or after sample preparation and prior to assaying, in order to ensure a proper assessment of precision, accuracy and assay contamination, independent of the internal quality control of the laboratory. Such a procedure raises the concern that blind insertion of crushed or pulverised material in sample batches prior to assaying could represent a breach in the chain of custody principle, as samples would have to be temporarily returned to the custody of a non-laboratory person in charge of the insertions. In this seemingly conflict scenario, what should we give up? Do we maintain the strict chain of custody, knowing that the laboratory will be aware of the identity of some of the control samples, or that some duplicates will not be true same-batch duplicates? Do we ignore chain of custody issues to maintain the anonymity of the control samples and insert blind same-batch duplicates, CRMs and blanks? Is it possible to do blind insertions without breaching the chain of custody? Current NI 43-101 and JORC requirements, as well as real-world QA/QC and sample security practices, are discussed in light of AMECÆs approach to the solution of this apparent dilemma.

Nuclear gauging is used world-wide in almost every industry. From mining and ore-grading to finished product, the metallurgical industry is one of the biggest users of nuclear sensors for inventory, process control, and quality assurance. This paper will discuss the basic theory of gamma transmission gauging techniques found useful in mining, milling and metal production. Techniques to be discussed are gamma transmission for level and density. A major new technique will also be discussed. This technique is called gamma backscatter. The uniqueness of this technology, how to apply and the differences between transmission and backscatter will be accentuated.

During a mineral exploration programme in an environmentally sensitive area near Mount Painter in South Australia, a helicopter was used to position, construct and service drilling rigs in order to avoid the need to create new access tracks. The drilling programme was designed to optimise the advantages of natural landforms in order to minimise the environmental impact of site construction and drilling activities. This minimisation of land disturbance reduced the required amount of rehabilitation measures to the extent where all impacts of the helicopter-supported programme had disappeared within twelve months of completion of work.

ABSTRACT: A 400m2 (480 yd2) heavily reinforced high-strength concrete slab 800mm (31 inch) thick had to be demolished. Underneath it was a 300mm (12 inch) thick underlying structure consisting of three layers: a cushion coat, a water barrier and a concrete layer that protected the water barrier. It was strongly desired by the owner that the underlying structure, especially the water barrier, remain undamaged during the blasting demolition of the reinforced concrete slab above it. This paper discusses the design of the demolition blast, problems encountered, and practical solutions to these problems. First, the impact caused by the charge explosion on the remaining structure was studied. In order to limit crack propagation in the concrete to the bottom of the concrete layer, the concrete isolation layer underneath the bottom of the slab to be demolished was left in place, to protect the water barrier and its protection layer. The effects of blasting vibrations on adjacent concrete were analyzed and precautions were proposed in the design. A safe blast design meeting the requirements to protect the water barrier below the slab was detailed. Rainwater collected and stored above the remaining underlying structure remained in place for two weeks, confirming that the design and blasting were successful.

Cerro Vangaurdia Gold Mine is a joint venture between AngloGold (the operator), Perez Companc and Formicruz and is situated in the southern province of Santa Cruz, in Argentina, approximately 2,150 km south of the capital, Buenos Aires. The mine is located in a severe, semi-arid environment with very cold winters and little annual rainfall (200mm). It is an open-pit operation, mining several narrow, shallow epithermal quartz veins with . gold and silver mineralisation. Commissioning of the plant commenced in September 1998 and the first dore bar was poured towards the end of the same month. The nominal capacity of the plant is 55,000 tonnes per month, with a design capacity of 60,000 tonnes per month. Prior to finalising the design, an extensive testwork programme was undertaken at Nova Lima, in Brazil, in which all parts of the process were evaluated together on a pilot-plant scale. The process flowsheet selected at Ce1rn Vanguardia is quite novel, in that it includes milling in cyanide, as well as a cyanide recovery and recycling plant on the tailings section of the treatment plant is included. The cyanide recovery process selected was a version of the acidification - volatilization - reabsorption (AVR) process, known as Cyanisorb™. The selection of the Cyanisorb™ process in the plant design was as a direct consequence of two factors:

This paper summarizes the works that the Research “Group of Ground Engineering”, belonging to the Mining Department of the University of Oviedo, Spain, has been developing in close cooperation with the Regional Mining Department, since 2001, in order to control and monitor an experimental underground limestone exploitation by the room and pillars method. The aim of the current research is not only the geotechnical characterization of the rock mass (by means of laboratory and site tests) or the instrumentation of its displacements and stress changes (using convergence meters, INCREX probe, extensometers and rigid inclusion cells), but, moreover, to undertake intensive monitoring and control of such pilot mine, which is mined exclusively in order to accomplish this research. The data transmission was made on line via Internet, to achieve a full understanding of the behaviour of the experimental mine, to access data from remote locations and to visualize results from a website. All the collected information becomes input data for several numerical models using finite differences under a program developed in the research Group, ALMEC. The simulation and a final economical analysis lead to a design of an underground exploitation, at production scale, for a resource that is traditionally mined by means of open-pit process methods that could be worked underground with less environmental impact. The main purpose achieved by this exhaustive analysis is the technical and economic viability of such mine, for their optimisation for a future productive exploitation.

An integrated suite of environmental methods was used to characterize the hydrogeological, geological and tectonic regimes of the study area, to determine the geometry of the landfill (depth and spatial extent of electrically conductive anomalies), to define the anisotropy caused by bedrock fabric fractures and to locate potential zones of electrically conductive contamination. The study area which covers an area of about 0.08 Km2 is a municipal solid waste site (MSW), located 20Km West of Herakleion in the central part of Crete (S. Greece). The landfill is located in a northwest oriented valley with highlands to the northeast and southwest. The combination of geophysical methods and chemical analysis are commonly implemented for characterization and management of land-fills. At the particular site, geophysical methods were focused on studying the electrical insolating properties of the materials, electrical con-ducting properties of fluids (leachates) and electromagnetic properties of the disturbed regolith materials in the burial zones. Three different types of geophysical surveys were performed: 1) 2D electrical tomography (ERT), 2) electro-magnetic measurements using very low frequencies (VLF) and 3) electromagnetic conductivity (EM31). Furthermore, in order to calibrate the geophysical methods dielectric spectrometry measurements are conducted. To evaluate the environmental degradation of the area, soil and liquids samples were collected.

In order to remain competitive, the search for excellence has been and will remain the only viable option facing the Mount-Wright operations. Safety and environment, process and technology as well as cost performance have been the focus points on which the operations have concentrated their efforts in order to meet and exceed our company's "Vision 2000" plan. Some of our mine's accomplishments have been a new work organization, a world class maintenance and a new collective agreement. The concentrator, maintenance and production departments have evaluated their processes and implemented various improvements in areas such as power supply, dewatering, blasting, implementation of service centers for large and small vehicles, fleet standardization, crusher, mills and silos improvements... etc. Safety and work environment for personnel have been our driving force in order to achieve this plan.

Paraffin deposition has been studied in the laboratory under conditions simulating deposition in well tubing. A theoretical analysis has been made of the cooling of the oil and the precipitation of paraffin from the oil as it flows up the well tubing and through surface flowlines. It is proposed that paraffin deposits are initiated by the precipitation of paraffin directly on or adjacent to the pipe wall and grow by diffusion of paraffin from solution to the deposit. This mechanism is consistent with laboratory and field observations, and has proved useful in the design and interpretation of laboratory paraffin-deposition tests. Tests have been made of the effect of plastic pipe coatings and chemical additives on paraffin deposition. INTRODUCTION Paraffin deposits which form in well tubing and surface flowlines interfere with production and must be removed. Over the years much progress has been made in developing and improving methods of removing these deposits after they form. Much less progress has been made in developing methods of preventing or inhibiting the formation of paraffin deposits. This is due, it is believed, to the lack of knowledge of the mechanism of paraffin deposition, the absence of satisfactory laboratory testing methods and the difficulties in evaluating the results of field tests of preventive treatments. The present investigation was undertaken to elucidate the mechanism of paraffin deposition and to develop suitable laboratory tests for studying the inhibition of paraffin deposition in well tubing and surface flowlines. Current theories on the mechanism of paraffin deposition have been evolved from field observations, from laboratory studies of various factors which might be involved in paraffin deposition, and from laboratory paraffin-deposition tests.1-9 Paraffin deposits have been formed in the laboratory by immersing a cold finger into a hot wax-oil solution and by flowing hot wax-oil solutions through cooled pipe or over cooled plates. These laboratory conditions differ in important features from field conditions, and the observed deposition behavior is not entirely field-like." Thus, there is reason to question the field applicability of the results of these tests. The present investigation was undertaken to determine how to perform and interpret laboratory paraffin-deposition tests to obtain information on the inhibition of deposition in the field. The paraffin problem in the broadest sense encompasses the formation of any predominantly organic deposit in well tubing, surface flowlines and other equipment in contact with crude oil or gas. The present investigation was limited to paraffin deposition involving the precipitation of paraffin wax from solution by cooling and its concentration in a deposit on a cooled surface. This probably excludes its applicability to those problems arising from asphaltic-base crudes, but not those arising from paraffin-or mixed-base crudes. This also excludes its applicability to emulsion and congealing oil problems which are often included as part of the paraffin problem. The phenomenon of cooling appears to be the controlling factor in paraffin deposition involving the precipitation of paraffin wax and its concentration in the deposit. Deposits of this type are usually found in the field only where cooling occurs. Early in this laboratory investigation, it was not found possible to form deposits under constant temperature conditions from a wax-oil slurry, either by steady flow through pipe or by gas-lift up a pipe. Thus, the investigation was limited to situations involving cooling. THEORY The relationships involved in establishing the temperature profiles in an oil stream as it flows up well tubing with a linear (geothermal) pipe-wall temperature distribution or through surface flowlines with essentially constant pipe-wall temperature are presented in the Appendix. The relationship between radial distance in the pipe and the rate of cooling of the oil is then combined with a relationship between cloud point and rate of cooling to develop the pattern of formation of a wax cloud in the oil. The following discussion of paraffin deposition under various laboratory and field conditions is based upon this development which is presented in the Appendix. PARAFFIN DEPOSITION IN SURFACE FLOWLINES The average temperature of the oil coming out of a well is somewhat higher than the ground temperature. Thus, the oil continues to cool on its trip through the surface flowline, and wax deposition can occur. The temperature distributions calculated from Eq. A-4 are given in Fig. 1. As can be seen, almost all the cooling occurs in the first 500 ft from the wellhead. In addition, the radial temperature gradient near the wall decreases rapidly with distance and becomes very small after a few hundred feet. Thus, growth of a paraffin deposit would be expected to decrease rapidly with distance from the wellhead and become negligible after a few hundred feet, since growth is dependent on concentration gradient. "Due diligence reviews are an essential part of mineral property acquisitions. One of the primary reasons to complete an environmental review prior to exploration property acquisition is to assess the potential environmental liability. It is critical to identify the potential reclamation costs or existing environmental liability associated with the exploration property. A review of the existing condition of the property and its history can allow prioritization of exploration targets and ease future expenditures for historic damages. IntroductionIn Canada and some other jurisdictions, the purchaser of a property is assumed to know, and is (in the absence of deceit or fraud) financially responsible for, what is purchased. A plea of ignorance, at least from the perspective of environmental liability, is not an acceptable excuse to avoid responsibility (Nelson, 1994). Therefore, if an exploration company (for the purposes of this paper, any organization conducting exploration work) purchases a property that has environmental contamination, the new owner is liable for the cost to reclaim the site to an acceptable level. The cost to reclaim the site is the environmental liability. The new owner is responsible for existing environmental liability of the property, even if the exploration company’s personnel were not aware of the problem. In simplest terms, buyers beware. Therefore, in order to protect the exploration company’s interests, the exploration manager should determine the characteristics of the property of interest prior to purchase or other involvement, and exercise due diligence.The term “due diligence” is often used in the mining industry. To ensure clarity, in this paper’s context, the author has chosen to use the following meaning: “… due diligence is used to describe a detailed data review, generally in connection with the purchase or sale of a mineral property, the approval of a large capital expenditure, or the borrowing of a large sum of money” (Smith, 1997).Directors of the exploration company are held liable for the decisions made, unless they have relied in good faith on,“…a written report of the auditor, or a report of a lawyer, accountant, engineer, appraiser, or other person whose profession lends credibility to a statement made by any such person” (OBCA, 1994)."

In the annual report under the Explosives Act for 1905, H.M.inspectors state that over 90 percent of the accidents causing death or personal injury occurred in the use of explosives and under miscellaneous conditions to which the controlling provisions of the Act do not apply, and that such accidents caused 43 out of the 50 deaths, and 312 out of 348 cases of injury. The number of accidents grouped under the heading of “Use and Miscellaneous” is less than that for 1904 - viz., 281 against 301. A new electrical logging method. called MicroLaterology is described. whereby the resistivity R of the invaded zone close to the wall of the bore hole is measured. This method essentially utilizes a system of concentric circular electrodes iml,edded in an insulating support which is applied to the wall of the hole. A beam of current of very small diameter is focused horizontally into the formations by means of an automatic control device. and then opens widely at short distance from the wall. with this method, R most often can be recorded directly. except when the mud cake is very thick. in which case a correction is easily provided. The basic role of factor R in the quantitative analysis of electrical logs in terms of fluid saturation and of porosity is explained. The paper is illustrated with field examples. INTRODUCTION In electrical logging. the resistivity of that part of the penneable and porous formations which is invaded by mud filtrate is an important factor in the interpretation. Measurements made with the conventional devices — normal. lateral — and also with improved systems as the Laterolog and induction logging' — are very often more or less affected by the presence of the invaded zone. and the knowledge of the resistivity of this zone is useful in the evaluation of the true resistivity of the beds. which itself is a basic element for the determination of fluid saturation. Moreover. the comparison of the resistivity of the invaded zone with the resistivity of the mud filtrate gives valuable indications on the magnitude of the formation resistivity factor — which in turn is necessary for the quantitative interpretation of the logs. both in terms of fluid saturation and of porosity. On the other hand. it is generally admitted that the invaded zone is not a homogeneous medium separated from the uncon-tamirlated part of the bed hy a well defined cylindrical boundary. but that the fluid distribution—filtrate. connate water. hydrocarbon — and hence. the resistivity. in the invaded zone varies progressively with the distance from the wall of the hole. The term "resistivity of the invaded zone" therefore corre-sponds to an average value which is a function of the distribution of the fluids Inasmuch as the law of this distribution is not exactly known, the resistivity of the invaded zone is not a well defined factor. A much better definition is obtained if the medium under consideration is limited to that part of the formation which is within a short distance from the wall of the hole. It seems likely a within a distance of at least two or three in., most of the fluids in in the pores of tile formation have been displaced by the mud filtrate. The connate water has almost certainly been flushed out. and the oil. if any has generally been reduced to a comparatively small amount. The resistivity witliir~ the radial limit of two to three in. is. therefore. prac.tically constant at an). given level: its value. at least when the proportion of conductive solids in the formation is negligible. is chiefly dependent on the resistivity of the filtrate and on the porosity of the formation, and is affected only to a relatively small degree by the presence of the small amount of residual oil. This part of the formation close to the wall of the hole will he designated in the following as the "flushed zone." a-distinguished from the more general term of "invaded zone'. which relates to the part of the formation extending from the wall out to the distance where the formation is completely uncontaminated. The symbol R,, will he used for the resistivity of the flushed zone. (The notation R is related to the radial distance from the hole. If x designates this distance. xo is the initial value of x, i.e., the value corresponding to the region very close to the wall.) The determination of R is difficult, if not impossible. from logs made with the conventional devices. The long normal and the long lateral are. of course. not suited for this purpose because their radii of investigation are by far too large. The short normal. and the limestone sonde—-after correction for the effect of the hole hole — give resistivity values which corre. spond to materials situated within a comparatively short distance from the hole, but this distance is still several time. as great as the thickness of tire flushed zone. The only value which can be obtained with these devices corresponds to an average resistivity of the invaded zone- — and this only provided the invasion is deep enough, since otherwise the meas "red values would also be affected by the uncontaminated region beyond the invaded zone. It should nevertheless be recalled that despite these limitations. the measurements given by the short normal and or the limestone sonde are always very useful for qualitative interpretation. and also in favorable cases for the qantitative analysis of the logs in terms of saturation and porosity. The MicroLog. which was primarily developed for the detection of permeable beds and for an accurate determination of their boundaries. provides a good approach towards the evaluation of R.
