THE revision of this chapter has presented a problem in that heavy-medium jigging has come into the picture since the chapter was originally written (seven years ago), a practice in which an artificial medium is built up and maintained in the jig circuit. As this development makes the jig a "true" heavy-medium process, the method belongs in the chapter dealing with such processes. Although putting this development in its proper position in the book involves some repetition, this seems to be the best procedure, and it has been followed. As the chapter on jigs in its original form was intended to be more or less a handbook on jigging for the use of the practical man, and the great bulk of the material therein is still generally applicable, the text has been re-used in large measure. Two major changes should be noted: (1) the portion of the text relating to the refuse-withdrawing mechanism of the McNally-Pittsburg jig has been entirely rewritten, and (2) a description of the hutch valves on the Jeffrey jigs has been added. Jigging is the stratification of a mass of solid particles in upward and downward pulsations. The stratification usually is effected in a rectangular open-top container having a perforated bottom through which the pulsations of water are applied to the materials to be separated; in separating coal, to a mass of coal and refuse. Jigging usually is a continuous process involving three steps: (1) the reception of the raw coal, (2) the stratification of the coal and refuse so that the refuse settles to the screen plate, and (3) the overflow of the cleaned coal and the withdrawal of the refuse collected on the screen. The jig is the most universal washer ever devised. It is handling in practice a wide range of closely sized coals and ores, mixed sizes of coal from 8-in. to 0 through 3/4-in. to 0, and mixed sizes of ores down to 7/32-in. to 0and even smaller. It is treating materials ranging in specific gravity from that of gold at 19 to that of coal at 1.30. It is handling feeds in which the proportions of high-gravity materials range from 90 per cent or higher, as for some iron ores, to 10 per cent or less for some coals. It is handling feeds containing all shapes of particles-round, rectangular, and flat. It is handling simple separation problems and difficult separation problems.

THE accompanying chart was devised to provide a rapid and simple method of correcting for temperature and compressibility (deviation from Boyle's law) of gas under relatively high pressures and temperatures, such as are encountered in many deep reservoirs. The chart was prepared by interpolating for the desired values in the experimental data of Burke and Keyes1 and Kvalnes and Gaddy2 on the compressibility of methane, after adjusting their results from 0°C. to 60°F. and combining the correction factors for compressibility and temperature into a single multiplier, which, applied to the product of pressure and reservoir volume, gives at once the volume at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in. abs.) and 60°F. The relationship 0f this multiplier to the compressibility factor Z, as used in most discussions, is simply: [Multiplier = 460° + 60°ZT –] where Z is the compressibility factor and T the absolute temperature (Rankine). Fahrenheit temperatures are shown on the vertical axis and pressures in pounds per square inch absolute on the horizontal axis. Correction factors or multipliers at intervals of 0.05 from 0.55 to 1.40 have been plotted on the chart and are calculated t0 give volume of gas at one atmosphere pressure (14.7 lb.) and 60°F. The operation is as follows: The reservoir volume, times the number of atmospheres pressure, times the multiplier, gives the volume of gas measured at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in.) and 60°F. For example, a reservoir is estimated to have a volume of 10,000,000 cu. ft., bottom-hole pressure is 2940 lb. per sq. in. and temperature is 184°F To make the correction for methane, follow the 184° line horizontally to the 2940-lb. pressure line. The intersection lies between the 0.85 and 0.90 correction lines, and by interpolation we may estimate the multiplier at 0.863. The selection of centrifugal pumps for mill discharge duty should be based on the total circuit concept. The practice of operating the mill circuit based on limitation of the pump can result in losses in one day which would offset the pump cost. Operating data from 25 grinding circuits have been reviewed and comparative results on added mill capacity have established advantages far beyond the less significant maintenance costs with increased circulating load and better cyclone operation. Mill discharge pumps should be selected on the following basis: i) Best available design for wear performance ii) Size to provide best economic life iii) Liner material best suited to circuit conditions Pump efficiency is a secondary consideration because power consumed by pumps is small compared to mill power input. Energy dissipated in mill pumps is contributing to comminution of ore.

"Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining is a unit of Noranda Metallurgy Inc., comprising the Home smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec and the C.C.R. Refinery in Montreal East. The Home smelter provides custom smelting services for a wide variety of copper and precious metal bearing concentrates and recyclable materials, producing over 200 000 tonnes of anodes and 450 000 tonnes of sulphuric acid annually. The C.C.R. Refinery has an annual production of 360 000 tonnes of copper cathode, and is a major refiner of precious metals.Over the past twenty years, Noranda Copper has developed innovative processes and operating techniques to treat the ever increasing complexity of primary feed materials, while improving the quality of its final products, working conditions and reducing environmental emissions.This paper presents an overview of the operating practices of Noranda Copper with particular emphasis on the impact of impurities in the smelting and refining processes.IntroductionThe treatment of custom materials has been practiced by Noranda Copper since commencement of operations at the Home smelter in 1927 and the CCR refinery in 1931. Copper concentrates from a wide variety of regional, North American and overseas producers account for the bulk of the 800 000 tonnes treated annually, although recyclable and secondaries have increased in importance as feed sources in the past two decades. The geographical disadvantage of the Horne smelter compared with most custom smelters located on tidewater has provided an important incentive for Noranda Copper to develop the necessary technology and operating practices at its smelter and refinery to treat high value complex concentrates and other feeds containing significant concentrations of bismuth, antimony, arsenic, lead, tellurium, mercury, etc."

(written discussion).-The basic requirement in the electrostatic process of electrical precipitation is that gases containing solid particles in suspension are forced to pass through an electrical field consisting of an insulated high-potential wire, or other type of discharge member, and a grounded plate, or other, type .of collecting member. Commercial. operation and efficiency of precipitation are secured by electrical and structural arrangements to provide the maximum value of the variable factors modifying the degree of precipitation. That is to say: 1. A unidirectional flow, of high-potential current is vastly more effective in precipitation than a high potential alternating-current flow.

R. S. BUSK*—I wish first to congratulate the authors of this paper both for the work done and the presentation of that work. We have also been working on this type of alloy development, but any technical contribution I might have is better reserved for a separate paper which is planned in the near future. However, I would like to insert a word of caution. The alloys described in this paper are still very much in the laboratory stage. There still remains the quite vexing problem of property stability at slightly elevated temperatures which must be solved before the properties quoted can be effectively utilized. These alloys are extremely interesting and I am confident that the problems can be solved. However, the present existence of those problems must not be overlooked. I have one question with regard to the work-hardening test. If the work harden-ability of magnesium is compared to aluminum using a more standard test such as the Meyer Analysis the magnesium is found to work harden the more rapidly. Is the test developed for this work truly a work-hardening test or a measure of something else ? J. H. JACKSON (authors' reply)—I am sure we appreciate the comments of Mr. Busk and we are pleased that the Dow Chemical Co. has also undertaken work in this field. It is a big field. We, of course, are continuing our research for the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics, since, as clearly shown in the paper, the alloys are not completely developed. With regard to Mr. Busk's comments on the relative work-hardenability of aluminum and magnesium, the comparison we cited in the paper was intended merely to show that the results obtained by our method of testing were independent of the yield strength of the materials. We believe that this test method afforded a rough indication of the work-hardenability of the magnesium-lithium base alloys. It is not known whether this method affords greater or less accuracy than the Meyer Process, which is based upon a hardness-test impression. It is quite possible, since work-hardenability is a function of metal purity, that our results, obtained for commercial aluminum and magnesium, would be different if high-purity metals had been used. A. C. LOONAM—Lithium has some very interesting effects on magnesium. The paper showed that even small percentages increased ductility. These small amounts changed the axial ratio of the hexagonal magnesium from 1.624 in the pure metal to 1.606 in the saturated alpha solution, a value close to that of titanium, which has a ratio of 1.601. You will recall an article in the January, 1949, issue of the Journal of Metals where it was stated that titanium can be cold-rolled over 90 pct without any significant edge cracking. At 4.9 or 5 pct lithium, a change begins in crystal structure—from a hexagonal close packed to body centered cubic. There are two phases over a short range of lithium content, but at 10 pct the structure becomes completely cubic. The melting points of alloys in this range of lithium content are relatively high. Alloys even up to the six ratio have melting points above 500°C; this represents a relatively small reduction in melting point from pure magnesium itself. The magnesium-lithium system has a number of very interesting characteristics. This is only a very small part of the story. J. H. The following outline has been prepared by request with the help of leading professors, business men, and social workers. It is arranged to cover 64 or preferably 96 class periods-four to eight month's work at the rate of two or three periods a week. More time would be desirable, but less time would be better than nothing. Certain topics must be omitted, especially if the assigned number of periods are lessened, where time is lacking. Many subjects are suggested in order to permit of choice and adaptation to local conditions; this is merely a suggestive outline. The course should be supplemented y engineering trips to study certain industrial conditions and the betterment work of selected companies-and social agencies. It should also be accompanied by brief surveys and practical service by students along the lines indicated. Reports and essays should be written. This is not a regular course in sociology and economics. It is a course in "human engineering" and should probably be directed by an engineering professor of large practical experience. Other members of the faculty, sociologists, economists, selected engineers, employers, labor leaders or others may be requested to lead certain periods, as desired. Care has been taken to avoid biased judgment in selection of topics and references.* * The authors of this outline have compiled an exhaustive list of references to books and periodicals relating to each group of topics. Enterprise Optimisation is a methodology for increasing the value of mining and mineral processing operations through better long-term planning decisions. It involves a combination of ten mechanisms which deal with decisions at different stages of the value chain. A decision made at any point in the chain potentially affects the decision for all other points in the chain. The key, therefore, is to optimise them simultaneously. The Enterprise Optimisation approach can be shown to produce increases of five per cent to 35 per cent or more in net present value (NPV), even when several optimisation methods have already been applied. This paper steps through an example case study, illustrating the effect of each mechanism and how they can work together to develop greatly improved results. This example results in a series of counter-intuitive outcomes, which challenges conventional management practices and typical organisational objectives based on organisational silos.

THE present work has been done in an endeavor to correlate and complete the data on the constitution of alloys of zinc with other common, metals, dealing exclusively, however, with the zinc-rich alloys in which the zinc content is between 90 and 100 per cent. This investigation has included the systems lead-zinc, cadmium-zinc, iron-zinc, copper-zinc, aluminum-zinc, nickel-zinc, manganese-zinc, cobalt-zinc, tin-zinc, and magnesium-zinc. The important ternary system zinc-lead-cadmium and the zinc corners of other ternary systems have been investigated in connection with this work but will not be dealt with here. Zinc does not form a single homogenous zinc-rich solid solution over any considerable range of concentration with any of the metals mentioned. A limited range of solid solubility is said,; by previous investigators, to occur in several cases and certain effects on the properties of zinc are attributed (with varying degrees of consistency among different writers) to the presence of certain other metals dissolved in zinc. The increasing use of rolled zinc and the possibilities offered by zinc as a casting alloy in certain fields have it made essential to determine precisely these equilibrium relationships. In carrying out this .investigation reliance was placed chiefly on two methods, conductivity measurements and microscopic analysis. The first method proved valuable in determining the existence and extent of solid solubility. The second method stands alone as a means of determining structural characteristics and supplements the first method in the measurement of solid solubility. The scleroscopic hardness of all conductivity specimens was measured partly for its value from the point of view of mechanical properties and partly; as a check on the conductivity curves in indicating the limits of solid solubility. No hardness curves are included in this paper, for in no case were they important in arriving at the constitution of any system.

MANY of the magnesite ores of the western part of the United States contain such large amounts of silica and hydrous silicate minerals that the value of the ores is either low or nominal. Expensive and carefully controlled mining methods are necessary to prevent excessive dilution of the higher grade ores by introduction in mining' of small pieces of the hanging walls or footwalls of the deposit. This difficulty is further complicated by the various states of decomposition of the country rock of the deposits in which many of the ores occur. The problem the authors attempted to solve arose from a request to float an impure magnesite containing varying proportions of siliceous gangue with calcium carbonate. The ore is normally. enclosed in serpen-tine masses, somewhat decomposed, and in mining it wall rock is inci-dentally added, so that variable amounts of siliceous material occur in the samples. The silica, alumina, and iron oxide are so closely associated with the magnesium carbonate in the magnesite that ordinary mechanical separation at coarse mesh sizes is of no avail. It is well known that calcium carbonate can be floated by suitable reagents, therefore it seemed reasonable to suppose that magnesium carbonate minerals would behave in a similar manner, but experimental trial proved that this supposition was unfounded. Therefore the first step in the problem was to find out what differences of behavior there were between magnesium and calcium carbonates under flotation conditions, or when suspended in water. In water at 18° C. magnesium carbonate is slightly more soluble than calcium carbonate; in fact, MgCO3 is soluble to the extent of 0.0106 grams in 100 c.c. of water at 18° C. and CaCO3 to the extent of 0.0013 grams. However, magnesium carbonate in water gradually changes to the basic carbonates of a composition (3MgCO3.Mg(OH)23H20) or (4MgCO3.Mg(OH)25H20), depending upon conditions, and calcium carbonate to calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, The relative solubilities of these hydroxides in water are the reverse of the solubilities of magnesium and calcium carbonates.. Laboratory test work, pilot plant testing and plant experience with wet, fine mesh screens is discussed. High frequency, low amplitude, fine mesh, wet screens were installed on the 6th cleaner concentrate stream. These screens produce a 60% oversize recovery split of the molybdenite concentrate that is of leached equivalent quality. The undersize stream is leached with 'hot ferric chloride to remove Pb and Cu contaminates before roasting or shipment to sulfide customers. This plant modification is a good example of using existing technology in an unconventional flow sheet to yield significant cost savings.

An investigation of the hydrometallurgy of Cu-Zn concentrates by The Dowa Mining Co. of Japan is described and a detailed flowsheet of the Kosaka hydro-metallurgical plant is given. Sufficient operating experience has shown that the Dorrco FluoSolids system has proven successful for recovery of both zinc and copper by roasting in a fluidized bed. At present, 2400 metric tons of concentrates per month are being treated and recoveries of 93 pct Cu and 65 pct Zn are being effected. A SURVEY of the Japanese chemical industry in 1949 revealed, among other things, that sulphur-bearing blast furnace gas from the Kosaka smelter of The Dowa Mining Co. Ltd., Kosaka, Japan, was being exhausted to the atmosphere as waste. In addition, it was costing that company an average of ten million yen ($28,000) annually for damages to the surrounding property caused by the sulphur dioxide in the gas. It was recommended by this survey that the gas be utilized for the production of sulphuric acid by the contact process. Mr. Kurushima visited the United States in May 1950 to investigate the engineering, construction, and operation of a contact acid plant. Any acid produced at Kosaka would necessarily have to be 98 pct H,SO, to prevent corrosion in railroad tank cars transporting it to the point of use. However, the production of 98 pct acid requires constant volume and SO, content of the gas. As the converter gas at Kosaka fluctuates in both volume and quality, it was decided to evaluate the smelting process with relation to other methods of recovery. This evaluation revealed a relatively new type of roaster, the Dorrco FluoSolids reactor, which was reported to be capable of roasting the copper sulphide concentrate in an excess of air with the production of an SO1 gas strong enough for acid production and a water-soluble copper sulphate calcine. The copper sulphate then could be leached from the roasted ore and electrolytic copper recovered from the leach solution in much the same manner as practiced by the Chile Exploration CO. for treating naturally occuring copper sulphate ores. Use of a reactor of this type would eliminate the need for a blast furnace and converter and, in addition, would effect savings in labor and fuel. The Kosaka ore is a microscopically fine mixture of copper, zinc, and lead sulphides. The lead and a small amount of the barite present can be separated by flotation, but any separation of copper and zinc proved extremely difficult. In blast furnace operation at Kosaka, zinc had been slagged off until a stockpile of about 12,000,000 tons containing 5 pct Zn had been accumulated. Mr. Kurushima felt that if any of the zinc in the concentrate was sulphat-ized and leached with the copper, it also could be recovered electrolytically. The Dorr Co., sponsors of fluidization technique in the metallurgical field, suggested that sulphate roasting be tested out on a laboratory scale and that, if successful, a commercial Dorrco FluoSolids system be constructed. They indicated that the results from such laboratory tests could be transposed to a commercial scale without pilot planting the roasting operation. It was therefore decided to send samples of flotation concentrate to the West-port Mill, laboratories of The Dorr Co., for testing. The objective of Mr. Kurushima's visit to the United States thus had changed from investigation of sulphuric acid plants to a fundamental examination of the hydrometallurgy of copper and zinc. "A typical low-grade of high sulfur bauxite fr contains 54.71% Al2O3, 11.35% SiO2 while the ratio of aluminum and silicon was 4.25, and harmful components such as Fe and S graded 7.3% and 1.33% respectively. The ore is characterized by complex mineral compositions, fine dissemination of particle size of pyrite and diaspore, low desulfurization efficiency, and difficult separation of aluminum and silicon. In order to improve the degree of concentration, recovery and desulfurization efficiency on the basis of process mineralogy studies, the floatation behavior of high sulfur bauxite in the process of desulfurization and desilication were studied through laboratory tests and pilot plant tests. KEYWORDS high-sulfur bauxite; low grade; flotation; desulfurization;desilicication INTRODUCTION In order to solve the selection problem of bauxite mine area, we carried out technological mineralogy, laboratory test, small-expansion Dalian test to solve the problem of the refractory ore. Main research contents and conclusions were presented as followings :(1)Process mineralogy research shows: the main mineral components include diaspore, kaolinite, chlorite, pyrite, limonite. (2)Batch flotation tests indicated that slime can be dispersed well during desulfurization floatation when Na2CO3 was used as modifying agent. (3)Poilot plant tests shows that Batch flotation tests results are correct. 2?PROCESS MINERALOGY 2.1 Chemical Composition of Ore 2.1.1 Spectral Analysis of Sample The results of the semi-quantitative analysis of X-Ray -fluorescence spectra of the original ore are shown in Table 2-1. The results of spectral analysis show that the main components of the sample are O, Al, Si, followed by Fe, Mg, Ti, S and so on, while the content of other elements is very small. The value is Al, and maybe Ti, for bauxite, while Fe and S are unfavorable elements, and Si and Mg and Ca are the main impurity elements."

A prediction is made of the airflow at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory with a ventilation computer program that accounts for fan-driven forced ventilation and temperature-induced natural ventilation. There was substantial agreement between measured and predicted airflow rates. The capability of the program is demonstrated as a planning aid for ventilation under emergency conditions in a multilevel coal mine. Smoke spread in a multilevel mine is analyzed following the occurrence of two events, the failure of the main exhaust fan and the development of a fuel-rich fire in a passageway.

Increasing capacity of bulk material handling systems creates difficult problems for accurate in-line material weight measurements. At the same time increasing system complexity and growing user demands call for more measurements. Precision in-line weight measurements for bulk materials are usually accomplished by application of conveyor belt scales. Belt scale accuracies listed by scale vendors are applicable for ideal situations with suitable conveyor design, belt scale location and calibration means. This paper attempts to provide designers and users with simple means to evaluate belt scale accuracy for practical scale installations. Based on known mathematical models simplified formulas for measurement errors are derived and discussed. These formulas allow for simple determination of achievable accuracy for alternative scale installations on the conveyor, conveyor designs, etc.

"This paper presents results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that the rock mass strength can be determined following the GSI approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions:• construction dates from 1880s to 2006• spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m• depths from 17 to 124 m• excavation methods of drill & blast, roadheader and TBM.Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of failure. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zone. Failure and stable points are then compared to the rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown criterion and spalling criteria. The Hoek-Brown rock mass strength envelope differentiates between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones remarkably well.INTRODUCTIONStress induced failures of rock masses are fortunately rare in civil tunnelling. However, when they occur they provide an opportunity to calibrate an assumed rock mass strength criterion. This paper compares an estimate of rock mass strength for the Hawkesbury Sandstone with the following cases where stress induced failure occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone.• Cataract & Devines Tunnels of the Upper Canal (Upper Nepean Scheme)• Malabar Outfall Tunnel• Sydney liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Storage Cavern• Northside Storage Tunnel• Cross City Tunnel• Lane Cove TunnelTwo-dimensional finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of the failures. Tellurium in raw slime has recently been recovered as copper telluride in Onahama Smelter & Refinery. The slime is decopperized with sulfuric acid solution in conventional leaching tanks. The pregnant leach solution containing 45 g/l of copper and 1 g/l of tellurium is introduced to a copper telluride recovering reactor. The tail solution from the reactor containing less than 20 mg/l of tellurium is recycled directly to circulation tanks of copper electrolysis. The work of the United States Bureau of Mines on stream pollution3 by coal-mine drainage has included a study of seasonal variations in acidity and volume of several streams in Pennsylvania. The acidity of these streams has been determined during the two or three years prior to 1930 and the results may be considered to represent "normal" low water conditions. The summer of 1930, however, was unusually dry and represents what may be termed "extreme" low water conditions on these streams. This report is a comparison of the results obtained for extreme low water of 1930 and for other years. The streams investigated were Buffalo Creek in Somerset County, Indian Creek (lower 5 miles) in Westmoreland County, Little Toby Creek in Elk and Jefferson Counties, Daguscahonda Run in Elk County and West Creek in Elk and Cameron Counties. These will be treated separately in the order given. Most of the descriptive matter and physical data pertinent to the streams and drainage basins are taken from published reports of the Pennsylvania State Water Supply Commission, 1917.4
