Archean supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt of western Wyoming have been an important source of gold and iron ore. Actual gold production statistics are incom- plete although gold production estimates for the South Pass- Atlantic City district range from a low of 2.0 Mg (70,000 oz) (Koschmann and Bergendal, 1968) to a high of 9.8 Mg (327,000 oz) (Hausel, 1980). From 1962 to 1983 iron ore was also mined from the greenstone belt and production totaled more than 91 Mt (90 million It). The supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt occur in a tightly folded synform bounded by Late Archean granite and granodiorite. The youngest of the Archean successions has a reported Rb-Sr isochron age of 2.8 b.y. (Stuckess, et al., 1985). Metamorphism of the supracrustals increases towards the flanks of the belt and is amphibolite-grade enclosing a small island of greenschist facies rocks. The supracrustal sequence consists of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks that are divisible into four mappable units. The metasediments include metagraywacke, quartzite, pelitic schist, banded iron formation, metaconglomerate, and graphitic schist. Metavolcanics include metabasalt, meta-andesite, and ultramafic schist. These supracrustals have been intruded by mafic sills and dikes and tonalitic stocks and dikes. Two granite plutons and associated pegmatites intrude the supracrustals in the western portion of the belt, and the supracrustals exhibit both fault and intrusive contacts with granitic batholiths along the western and eastern margins. The northeastern flank of the Archean belt is unconformably over- lain by Paleozoic sediments, and the southern portion of the belt is onlaped by Tertiary sediments.

Exploration programs for mineral resources often involve analysis of soils or stream sediments for the mineral being sought or its pathfinders. Because many metals are toxic to microorganisms, patterns of metal resistance in soil or aquatic populations may provide additional useful information at a reasonable coat. These patterns in some cases have been more effective than the soil geo-chemistry and may be easier to obtain. Elevated levels of resistance to silver and its path-finders have been demonstrated in stream populations from an area of known silver deposits, and resistance to gold pathfinders has been demonstrated for gold-bearing areas. Uranium has also been located by this method.

An efficient filtration plant can be designed only from an adequate knowledge of the filtration characteristics of the material to be handled; if these characteristics can be expressed in the form of an equation the work of design is simplified immensely. The literature of the subject contains numerous equations which have been developed by various workers to express their results, usually obtained from a 'Very limited class of material, and from moderately thick pulps. Such expressions have been found quite unsuited for use in the case of thin, very free filtering pulps.In 1926, Underwood put forward an equation having a general for m, and which, he was able to show, provided a satisfactory expression of the data obtained and published by a large number of earlier workers. This equation has been found a very satisfactory and useful tool for the study of a variety of filtration problems. To assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere.

Vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) is the refining process used by ALZ (Genk, Belgium) for their production of stainless steels. The process consists of three stages: oxygen blowing at a pressure of 100 mbar, degassing, and reduction of the slag with ferrosilicon at 5 mbar. The magnesia-chromite bricks used in the slag zone of the ladles suffer from acute wear. In this paper results obtained from a program to improve the refractory life span are presented. The dominant wear phenomena were identified with an electron microscopy study of bricks taken from different locations in the ladle. Concurrently a dynamic model for the vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) refining process was developed. The model calculates the elementsÆ oxidation rate during the blowing oxygen stage and allows the continuous calculation of the change of the metal, slag and gas composition throughout the VOD process. From these activities a general scheme of the refractory wear was worked out and measures to improve the refractory life were proposed and implemented.

"The Galore Creek copper deposits are situated in the Stikine River district, 640 miles northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposits are primary cupriferous replacements localized in highly fractured zones lying in altered sedimentary, extrusive and intrusive rocks near the contacts of a potash-rich syenite porphyry complex which forms the core of a structural dome in Upper Triassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Ten deposits are distributed over an area of 3.5 by 2 miles and through an elevation range of 4,000 feet. The deposits share many of the characteristic features common to both the porphyry copper type of mineralization and pyrometasomatic deposits.Primary mineralization includes chalcopyrite and bornite, and is associated principally with pyrite and magnetite. The daminant alteration products are hydrothermal biotite and potash feldspar. Gypsum, anhydrite, garnet, chlorite and carbonate are commonly associated with sulphide minerals. Copper oxides, al-though present, are quantitatively of minor importance. The distribution of certain of the primary minerals reveals hypogene zoning characteristics.The results of stream sediment surveys, and airborne magnetic, ground magnetic and induced polarization surveys show important relationships to geologic structure and mineral deposits."

The Tolt Pipeline No. 2, West Snoqualmie Valley project, is part of a water supply project linking the Tolt reservoir in East King County to the City of Seattle through a nominal 2.13 m (7-ft) inside diameter conveyance. Receipt of the National, 2002Microtunnel Award provided recognition of the many challenges overcome by this project. Baseline conditions revealed in the Geotechnical Documentation included over-consolidated glacial deposits, landslide and alluvial deposits, artesian water, boulders up to 36-in in diameter, logs, heaving sands, and liquefiable soils beneath the river. Schedule constraints associated with setting the shafts in the floodplain of a salmon bearing river and the fickle performance of the river during those times it was not supposed to flood added to the challenge.

In this Spotlight, Richard Beck, Holder of the Regional Development Portfolio, gives the aims of the Institute's branches, with a short note on each branch prepared by the regional chairman. Aims of the Branches: The primary aims of the Branches of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are those of the Institute itself: to further the interest of its members, to uphold the status of the mining and metallurgical profession, and to promote the image of mining and metallurgy. Beyond these 'high' objectives, the branches have a special function in providing a more intimate relationship between the Institute and its members. The branches enable members who live outside the Johannesburg area to participate in the affairs of the Institute to an extent that would not otherwise be possible and that they themselves can define. This is achieved through the holding of social events, colloquia, and visits.

A numerical method of solving the partial differential equations which describe the one-dimensional displacement of oil by gas has been presented. Possible extension of the method to treat multidimensional flow is discussed, and the limitations of this extension are indicated. Using this method, it is possible to allow for the existence of a gas cap, the presence of any number of gas-injection or oil-production wells and the evolution of dissolved gas from the oil. It is also possible to allow for variation in the cross-sectional area, elevation, porosity and permeability of the reservoir. The influence of relative permeability and the force of gravity in the direction of flow upon the displacement is considered. The influence of capillary pressure upon the flow and the effect of gravity in the direction perpendicular to flow are neglected. The physical properties 01 the fluids are considered to be Junctions of pressure only, and equilibrium between contiguous phases is assumed. The numerical calculations can be readily carried out by the use of a digital computer. Several example analyses have been performed using the IBM 704 computer, and about one-third of an hour of computing time was required per case. Reservoir behavior predicted by use of this numerical method was compared to data obtained by other methods for three cases — complete pressure maintenance, dissolved-gas drive and gas-cap drive. The independent solutions to these problems were obtained by analytical solution, laboratory experiment and field data, respectively. Agreement of the numerical solution with data from these sources was good; this agreement establishes the convergence and accuracy of the numerical method. INTRODUCTION Most petroleum reservoirs can be produced by any one of several alternative programs. When a reservoir is produced by primary methods, production economics can be influenced by controlling the number and location of wells and the flow rate of each well. An even greater influence may be achieved by augmenting the recovery of oil obtainable by primary methods. This can be accomplished by injection of fluids such as water, natural or enriched gas or a bank of light liquid hydrocarbons. Selection of the most desirable operation requires a means of predicting the reservoir behavior which will result from each of the several alternative programs. The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical method for predicting the behavior of reservoirs produced by gas-cap drive, dissolved-gas drive or pressure maintenance by gas injection. The method described herein takes cognizance of phase changes caused by a decline or an increase (due to gas injection) in reservoir pressure, of the presence of a gas cap and of the effect of gravity on the flow of gas and oil. Relative permeability relationships are used to define the flow properties of the rock. Allowance is made for variation in cross-sectional area, elevation, permeability and porosity of the reservoir. Both the influence of capillary pressure upon the flow and pressure gradients in the gas cap are neglected. Whenever a liquid phase and a gas phase are in contact, they are assumed to be in equilibrium. The physical properties of the fluids are considered to be functions of pressure only. Therefore, if the method is to be used to predict the effects of a gas-injection program, mixtures of the injected gas and formation crude should-have the same physical properties as mixtures of formation gas and crude. The equations to be presented in this paper apply only to a one-dimensional case; therefore, they neglect the influence of gravity in the direction transverse to the flow. As is well known, this gravitational influence may lead to overriding of oil by gas. Consequently, this procedure as presented is most applicable to long, thin reservoirs for which gravity overriding is not important. On the other hand, the equations presented can be generalized to treat multidimensional flow and, hence, to consider gravity overriding, if desired. A word of caution on two points is advisable here, however. First, the authors have not demonstrated the accuracy of the numerical technique for multidimensional flow. We present plate tectonic reconstructions, showing that porphyry-type ore deposits are spatially and temporally linked to ridge subduction. A reconstruction of the Peruvian subduction system reveals an immediate metallogenic response to the arrival of the Nazca Ridge at the subduction trench, followed by southward migration of the zone of metallogenic activity due to the lateral migration of the zone of ridge subduction. A similar pattern is recognised in central Chile , where the spatio-temporal distribution of giant ore deposits coincides with the arrival of the Juan Fernandez hotspot chain at the subduction zone. We conclude that there is a spatial and temporal link between ridge subduction and ore deposit formation, with high metal fluxes concentrated in zones of ridge subduction. Thus, the recognition of tectonic patterns associated with ridge subduction can provide insights into predictive mineral discovery by enhancing our ability to predict the position of large mineral deposits in other modern and ancient orogens. Correlation has been obtained between drag-reducing characteristics for turbulent flow in a pipe and measurable properties of several polymer solutions. Several concentrations of high molecular weight polymethyl methacrylate in toluene, high molecular weight polyisobutylene in both toluene and cyclohexane, medium molecular weight polyisobutylene in cyclohexane and benzene and low molecular weight polystyrene in toluene were studied. Data obtained in these nonpolar solvents and literature data for more polar solvents were successfully correlated as the ratio of measured friction factor to purely viscous friction factor vs the modified Deborah number vrl/D0.2 where 71 is the first-mode relaxation time of the solution estimated by the Zimm theory. A shift factor which is a function of intrinsic viscosity 1/(4[?] - 1) allowed all the data obtained with nonpolar solvents to be correlated as a single function. For these systems, most of the data fit a single curve to within + 5 percent of the average friction factor ratio. The shift factor did not give a unique function of the data for the more polar systems. INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of drag reduction in polymer solutions was first studied by Toms1 in dilute solutions of polymethyl methacrylate in mono-chlorobenzene. The drag ratio for flow through circular tubes has been defined2 as the ratio of the pressure. drop of the solution to the pressure drop of the solvent at the same flow rate. The drag ratio is less than 1.0 for a drag-reducing fluid. Practical use of drag reduction is being made in fracturing operations in the petroleum industry.3 A more fundamental quantity is the friction factor ratio, defined as the ratio of the observed pressure drop to that predicted for a solution of the same viscosity characteristics and density at equal flow rates using the Dodge-Metzner friction factor equation4 Viscous solutions with drag ratios greater than 1.0 can have friction factor ratios less than 1.0. For practical applications, it is drag reduction which is of interest. However, for correlation the fundamental ratio is the friction factor ratio. In recent years, drag reduction has been studied extensively. Recent studies have shown that reasonable predictions of the incipience of drag reduction in polymer solutions can be made from the properties of the solutions and the flow Variables.5 However, it has not been possible to predict accurately the amount of drag reduction to be expected for a given polymer solution without any drag-reducing turbulent flow data on the same solution.6 For flow through circular tubes it is well established that there is a concentration effect and a diameter effect on drag reduction. Toms1 observed that drag reduction increases with an increase in the concentration of the solution up to an optimum concentration beyond which, due to the increased viscosity of the solutions, the drag ratio increased with an increase in concentration. Hershey 7 observed that for dilute Newtonian polymer solutions in nonpolar hydrocarbon solvents, a normal transition region may be obtained followed by a departure from the von Karman equation (on a friction factor-generalized Reynolds number chart). In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of 68,458 acres of the Clan Alpine Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-030-102) which covers 196,128 acres in Churchill County, NV. Most of the area studied is underlain by Tertiary volcanic rocks. In the northeast corner of the study area, an upthrown block of Triassic sedimentary rocks partially extends into the area. The study area is probably part of a large eroded caldera. No major mines or active claims are within the study area. Field investigations included examination of workings in Starr Canyon, historical and recent mining activity near the mouth of Florence Canyon, other mining claims, and anomalous zones delineated by data from Great Basin GEM Joint Venture studies. No mineral resources were identified, but sample results indicate one significant mineralized zone situated along a northwest trend between the head of Starr Canyon and the head of Cherry Creek may contain precious metal resources. Further investigation of this zone is warranted.

Nas últimas décadas, o silício grau solar (~99,9999% de pureza) tornou-se um importante material devido à sua aplicação na construção de células fotovoltaicas. O comportamento frágil do silício a temperatura ambiente dificulta a obtenção de formatos convenientes para as etapas posteriores de processamento. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de analisar a fratura de lingotes de silício ocorrida durante o processo de lingotamento contínuo após fusão em forno de feixe de elétrons. A análise do silício obtido no lingotamento contínuo mostrou a ocorrência de fratura por clivagem. A fratura observada após o lingotamento de iniciadores de silício ocorreu na mesma região do lingote obtido no lingotamento contínuo, indicando que a força aplicada para extração do silício durante o lingotamento contínuo não causa a fratura, que, portanto resulta das tensões térmicas durante a solidificação e resfriamento posterior. A modelagem matemática através do método dos elementos finitos da transferência de calor combinada com a formação de tensões térmicas mostrou que as tensões térmicas resultantes do processo de resfriamento, após a solidificação, poderiam ser suficientes para causar as fraturas observadas.

In their paper on the directional properties in cold-rolled and annealed commercial bronze,' Phillips and Samans suggest that cupronickel, under distinctly different treatments, shows both "45" ears" and "90" ears. Fig. I shows the ears on some cupronickel cups made some 17 years ago for bullet jackets for small arms ammunition. In this case the material heated to 425° C. had "45" ears, while that annealed at 950°C. showed long "90" ears" when drawn with the same tools. The method of cupping, the shape of cupping tools, etc., were found to have very little influence on the earing tendency, but the deeper the cup was drawn, the higher the ears would be. Method of Manufacture Cupronickel cast bars were 1 in. thick. Ordinarily, they were rolled with numerous passes to a thickness of 0.4 to 0.2 in., according to conditions. They were then given a single intermediate anneal, and rolled to finish thickness, frequently 0.032 in. After a last anneal the material was cupped with a "cut and draw" operation. The International Tunnelling and Under-ground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. The United States has had a prominent role in ITA since its 1974 inception. ITA was formed as a result of a worldwide survey conducted in the early 1970s by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Bill Lucke was in charge of tunnels for the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration and was a member of the organizing committee that created ITA. He became a vice president of ITA. Jack Lemley served as President of ITA from 1983 to 1986. Dick Robbins was very active in ITA and served for many years both as a member of the Executive Council and as First Vice President. Harvey Parker has served as President of ITA for the last three years and will serve as Past President for the next three years. Moreover, there are many individuals and companies from the United States that have contributed significantly to the activities and the success of ITA. There have been several active Working Group Animateurs from the U.S. and there have been significant contributions from many individuals as well as companies from the U.S. Several engineers from the U.S. are currently serving ITA in a leadership role. The Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME) is the official organization representing the U.S.. SME Executive. [ ] Director Dave Kanagy and UCA President Tom Peyton were instrumental in the U.S.?s role at ITA during the last few years. Peyton has been the official delegate to ITA. Henry Russell and Christian Ingerslev are both Animateurs of ITA working groups. This article will introduce ITA and its activities. A subsequent article will describe the ITA in more detail and will discuss the significant role the U.S. has played in the development and success of ITA.

Nested pit analysis in open-pit long range mine planning is used to define approximate ultimate pit limits and an initial high-level schedule in the early stages of a project. Modern ultimate pit optimizers can solve for dozens, or even hundreds, of nested pits however often a smaller subset of pits which are evenly spaced with respect to contained tonnage are desired for downstream analysis. In situations where that pushback selection process must be automated, such as when performing sensitivity analysis, or when the best subset of pushbacks is required; an optimization procedure is warranted. This paper describes a dynamic programming algorithm for selecting pushbacks following nested pit analysis, which is performant and addresses a long-standing inconvenience faced by long range open-pit mine planners.

A number of suggestions have been made to improve the design of cells used for electro winning and electro refining of metals. Most of these designs have been aimed at increasing the current density used in order to improve cell capacity, although the purpose of some has been to produce electro deposited metals in a continuous manner. This article concludes a two-part series on the safety, technology, and economic impact of eliminating safety fuse from metal and nonmetal mines. Discussed are the consequences of fuse abolishment, the technical feasibility of changing to an alternative system, and an economic analysis of initiation systems. Last month, part one (ME, pages 31-35) described current use of initiation systems, incidence of accidents, and consumption values for safety fuse and other initiation systems. Consequences of Fuse Abolishment Cap and Fuse Manufacturers Two major safety fuse manufacturers, Ensign Bickford and Apache Powder Co., share the US fuse market. Marketing of Ensign Bickford safety fuse is done by Dupont. Dupont manufactures electric caps as a main product and recently introduced a new nonelectric initiation system (Detaline). Therefore, Dupont would be only slightly affected by the elimination of safety fuse from metal and nonmetal mining. Ensign Bickford, though a larger manufacturer of fuse, does not appear to emphasize the safety fuse market. In fact, safety fuse sales represent only about 10% of Ensign Bickford's total sales volume. Ensign Bickford is strongly pushing its Nonel product. It appears, therefore, that the elimination of safety fuse would have a limited effect on Ensign Bickford, and could ultimately be to the company's advantage. Apache Powder Co., however, would be seriously affected if safety fuse was eliminated. Safety fuse, although not its only product, constitutes a major source of revenue for the company. It currently does not manufacture a substitute product. Apache Powder Co.'s manager agrees that prohibiting the use of safety fuse would result in a greater market share of initiators for Ensign Bickford. Hercules could also benefit from the prohibition of safety fuse. Metal and Nonmetal Mining Industry According to an explosive company contact, elimination of safety fuse by a mandatory regulation would force some of the small, marginal mines out of business. Another powder company representative believes that eliminating safety fuse will result in uneasy situations for small operators not familiar with other techniques. These operators try to minimize the costs and traditionally like safety fuse. He believes that insufficient proof exists to substantiate the overall safety increase if the fuse is eliminated. Fuse manufacturers and distributors disagree, then, about the impact of safety fuse elimination. However, they tend to agree on some important points: • Safety fuse can be a safe method if applied properly. • Electric blasting can be dangerous due to stray currents, and may have higher misfire rates than safety fuse. • It is very difficult to compare the rate of misfires and partial round failures for different systems. This is due simply to the nonavailability of such data. In many cases, the misfires are not even reported to the shift boss, as required by regulations. • Safety fuse has high acceptance in certain applications, such as a face where Nonel or detonating cord are used, or in open-pit blasting. • The safety fuse industry appears to be phasing out on its own. It is expected that the fate of the safety fuse market will be similar to that of black powder. An investigation by Nitro Noble of Sweden "clearly states that the diminishing use of safety fuse has considerably reduced the accidents in Swedish mines." Mine Data Acquisition and Analysis As a part of the study effort, visits were arranged to 24 metal and nonmetal mines. In most cases, underground visits were accomplished. At least one drilling and loading operation was witnessed. The mines were grouped into four mining areas: Wyoming, Montana, Idaho; western Colorado and eastern Utah; Missouri; and southern Arizona. Of all mines visted, the safety fuse system was used in 11 mines, electrical system in seven, Nonel in five, and the Hercudet system in one surface mine. At each mine, the manager, foreman, and blasting crew were interviewed for information and opinions. Besides informal discussions with mine officials, a questionnaire was also filled out for each mine. Due to the extensive length of the information gathered, these data are not presented here.
