Mining companies can improve production and reduce costs by using the best available technology to control their operations. Many mines are challenged to use multivariable predictive control due to limited experience or staffing, as well as being concerned over the robustness and sustainability of predictive controls. As a result many mines are not realizing optimal performance from their assets, and thusly are not realizing the production increases or cost reductions that this technology can deliver. Over the past few years, the application of multivariable model-based predictive control has gained acceptance in many mining processes and has proven to be robust and sustainable for some of the most challenging mining processes. New automated modeling and performance monitoring software have greatly simplified the effort to implement and maintain these solutions. In addition, many progressive companies have chosen to co-source the implementation and service of these solutions to assure project success and continued benefits stream. This technology has been successfully applied to a wide variety of processes; grinding mills, alumina digestion, CCD washer and thickeners, kilns, calciners, roasters, flash smelters, heat exchangers, evaporators, and most recently in the demanding process of flotation. This paper discusses the state-of-the art in advance control technologies in the mining industry, including the impact of these technologies on maximizing benefits, and implementing best practices for long term sustainability. Benefits from recent multivariable predictive control applications in copper mining will be reviewed, and the use of the latest predictive control technologies and practices in mining will be discussed.

In view of the singleness of traditional methods about international petroleum (Brant) price forecast, ten main factors that affect international petroleum price are fully analysed. Based on time series method and multivariate linear regression method, the simulation model with the theory and idea of system simulation is firstly established. And this forecasting system realizes visual operation under the environment of MATLAB/SIMULINK. So this article tries a new way for further exploring petroleum price’s running law and guiding its forecasting practice. "The development of indicators to assess the sustainability of mineral raw materials operations is amajor task with respect to its actuality and difficulty. This holds true even more when dealing withenvironmental indicators.The use of existing environmental indicators in the mineral raw materials industry leads to false orat least distorted results. Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH AachenUniversity developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industryon operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour(Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciencesand Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR).In total 30 indicators were defined and designed to assess the performance of the mineral rawmaterials industry in terms of sustainable development, 10 indicators for each pillar (economical,ecological and social pillar).The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development of environmentalindicators. The tank car price of gasoline today is controlled by oil in the ground, rather than by stocks of gasoline or methods of refining. Previous to the commercial cracking of fuel oil, there was a normal and continuous relation between gasoline stocks, consumption and prices. From the beginning of the new cracking era in 1923 to the summer of 1926 there was a changing relationship, growing toward a correlation between the potential gasoline in storage and the price of gasoline. Since the development of large reserves of shutin production in Wyoming, California, Seminole, West Texas and Venezuela, the relationship between stocks of gasoline and gasoline prices has disappeared. The extreme depression of the Group 3 price can only be accounted for by oil which is not being produced but which we fear may be produced at any time. In Fig. 1, the curve of gasoline stocks is simply stocks of finished gasoline. The curve of potential gasoline is made by taking 40 per cent. of all stocks except gasoline, kerosene and lubricants, adding to that stocks of finished gasoline and dividing the sum by total gasoline con-sumption to get the months' supply of gasoline at the current rate of consumption. The price curve is the lower figure given by the National Petroleum News for the first quoted date of each month, with the price scale reversed. Stocks of potential gasoline have decrrased from 17 months' supply at the peak of 1924 to a low of 7 months' supply during the past summer, yet the low immediately precedes the lowest price for gasoline since it was a waste product. The tendency of the price curve to parallel the curve of potential supply is quite pronounced until the summer of 1926, since which time they have abruptly separated. The curve of gasolinct stocks is equally remarkable in relation to price when it is considered that total consumption for the year 1927 is almost exactly twice that of 1924. Clearly a new factor has been introduced. There is no possible factor to account for this distortion except known reserves of oil in ground storage, and therefore, until such time as the Bureau of Mines or the

The Ngakuru zeolites are located about 20 km south of Rotorua and comprise a number of deposits dispersed along several fault lines. Relatively recent volcanic activity (250,000 years ago) resulted in ash depositions that vary in depth and mineralogy. Subsequent variable thermal alteration intensities generated predominantly clinoptilolite and mordenite zeolites with a range of physical characteristics. Typically the zeolites have low density (650 kg/m3), have high liquid (60% of dry weight) and odour absorption characteristics, and a high affinity for soluble cations (CEC =: 100 meq/100 g). Traditional kitty litter and oil absorbency markets are being expanded. New opportunities in waste and potable water treatment, organic and synthetic slow release fertilisers, use as a light weight aggregate for speciality concretes, and pozzalome activity are currently being researched.

A copper heap leach model, employing leading edge computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology, is applied to the Zaldivar heap leach operation in Chile in order to explore and analyze the possible impact of operational changes. The effect of changes to the heap operation on copper recovery has been previously investigated and reported by the Zaldivar operation. This paper examines the extent to which a comprehensive heap leach model supports the analysis and conclusions of the published work. The heap is a complex multi-phase process, consisting of a solid static porous media with complex fluid flow, gas and liquid phases, competing solid-liquid reactions, dissolution of minerals and transport through the heap. The model accounts for the physical and chemical features of the heap, including transport and reactions kinetics for the important copper and iron sulfide minerals, ferrous oxidation, bacterial effects, thermal energy, acid and sulfate balances. The model was calibrated to published data on the ore body and employed to analyze the impact of a number of operational changes, including solution flow rate, acidity, lift height, crush size and head grade.

Underground coal-mine explosives (permissibles) can be substantially degraded by the underground stress waves from the explosion of neighboring borehole charges. This cross-borehole interaction generally yields the worst receptor (impacted) charge performance when the borehole separations are too close. For explosives which recover, the receptor degradation is worst when the delay until firing is small. Except for a poor quality muck pile or unreacted cartridge fragments, degraded charge malfunctions of this type are difficult to detect in coal-mine delay blasting. A simulator which reproduces the underground wave/receptor charge interaction and special underwater donor/receptor tests were utilized to study this transient desensitization problem. Test results revealed reductions in receptor energy output, delayed transitions into detonation, inferior reaction rates, or sympathetic reaction responses from the impaction. Tests on detonators showed reduced tip-strength, abnormal functioning times, or sympathetic firing as a result of transient impaction. The cross-borehole desensitization and sympathetic reaction response problems warrant concern because they are logical mechanisms for raising the risk of hazardous mining conditions, including blown-out shots, flyrock, charge deflagration, and methane/coal dust ignitions.

On the western continental shelf of southern Africa diamonds derived from onshore sources are concentrated in gravels within drowned terrestrial and marine geomorphological features. First discovered offshore in the late 1950's, they are known to exist for about 1400 km along the Namibian and South African coast in water depths of up to 200 m. Shallow water operations yielded 1.5 Mct during the decade ending 1970 when De Beers acquired a majority of the offshore leases and commenced a 15 year exploration program. Deeper water and the prevailing sea conditions required the development of new, unique, marine mining equipment. The first large scale mining production of 22 kct was achieved by De Beers in 1989 with an output of 22 kct. Annual marine output from all sources now exceeds 0.6 Mct worth some US.$ 170 M, and rising to 0.7-0.8 Mct for 1998. Exploration has also been taking place in the waters of West Africa, Australia, and Indonesia. Exploration is by means of high resolution geophysics followed by sampling using a variety of drills, airlifts and seabed-mounted machines which imitate the eventual mining process. Surveying is now probing depths of 500 m. Smaller scale mining by several junior companies has traditionally involved diving and airlift systems. Increasingly, however, they are adopting different and improved techniques which to date have been employed only by De Beers Marine as contractor to Namdeb. Marine exploration and unit mining costs are high compared to those applicable to alluvial deposits onshore. By 1996 the total development costs incurred by De Beers alone reportedly had exceeded US.$ 500 M. However, the financial rewards are commen-surate because of the higher recovered grades. The operations are not without risk for the total of nearly 10 large and medium scale production vessels deployed by various organisations. The greatest shortfalls are experienced in the estimated throughput, not the grade.

AS STATED last year, in a similar review by David White and the author, any review of the petroleum industry purporting to cover such a wide field can only mention the principal facts. This incompleteness is necessitated not only by the limitations of space, but by the delay in receiving detailed information. The principal feature of the year, in Europe, was a material increase in the consumption of petroleum products, and a notable decline in prices. Although there we relative increases in production in Roumania and Poland, the total did not by any means keep pace with the increase in consumption, which, as usual, was supplied "from America and both the Near and Far East. The interest in Asiatic production, as usual, centers around the Persian fields, which, according to the annual report of the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. published at the close of last year, it was estimated would amount to 3,775,000 tons by the close of the fiscal year, March 1, 1924. Russia also showed an increase in production. In Africa there was nothing of outstanding interest in production, although Egypt showed a decrease and the goverment refinery at Port Said was closed.

With low metal prices and increasing value placed on plant water and tailings disposal areas, it is becoming essential to maximize the efficiency of solid-liquid separation processes. Since its inception over 25 years ago, the use of flocculants has grown exponentially. While flocculants play a crucial role in the sedimentation process, they are also a major operating cost. Recent innovations are revolutionizing the industry once again. New thickener designs are doubling thickener-loading rates while reducing flocculant consumption. The feedwell, as the heart of the thickener, is undergoing many significant metamorphoses. With CFD and other advanced computational analysis, feedwell technology is being examined more thoroughly than ever before, The result is that the thickener previously thought of, as a "Black Box" is now being mapped and controlled with state-of-the-art technology. This paper will examine recent design improvements in all aspects of thickeners in order to project the look of the thickener of tomorrow.

"In our laboratory several impactors have been developed in the past which have penetration characteristics that approximate that of the ACGIH or the British MRC respirable curves. In these impactors the large nonrespirable particles are collected on an impaction plate of a multiple round nozzle stage where the nozzles are of different diameters. The principle for designing a respirable cut impactor is quite simple in that the respirable curve is divided into two or more segments and the nozzles are designed with the correct diameters and number of nozzles to have collection characteristics with 50% cutpoints at the center of each segment. The particles not collected on the impaction plates are then collected upon a filter. These particles represent the respirable fraction of the aerosol. Therefore the respirable curve is approximated in a stepwise fashion with the approximation becoming better as the respirable curve is divided up into increasing numbers of segments. It has generally been felt that three segments is satisfactory for most cases.A new version of the respirable impactor has recently been developed in our laboratory. This impactor approximates the ACGIH respirable curve in three steps at a flow rate of 30 liters per minute. However, unlike previous models where all of the particles larger than the three cut points designated by the three steps are collected upon one impaction plate, a separate impaction plate is now used for each of the three cut sizes. To approximate the respirable curve in three steps, the cut sizes must be 2.2, 3.5 and 5.8 microns diameter. Therefore, on each of these stages the particles collected will be the mass of particles that are larger than these three cut sizes. By determining the mass of particles collected on each of these three stages plus that on the after filter using Gravimetric techniques, some information can be obtained on the size distribution of the aerosol being sampled. Furthermore, the impaction plates of the three stages are rotated and the nozzles are placed in such a position such that a uniform deposit is obtained on each of the impaction plates. Therefore, the deposits collected are suitable for X-ray fluorescence analysis or other types of analysis where a uniform deposit is required."

Chromite beneficiation is generally performed by crushing and density separation using spirals. At the Dwarsrivier Chrome mine spiral efficiencies seam to vary, the reason for which is not evident. This sometimes results in the production of low-grade products, which are sold at relatively low prices. This paper represents a Qemscan® study that investigated mineralogical reasons for these variations. Variations in liberation of chromite particles as well as variations in chromite compositions were investigated. The results showed that the so-called low grade chromite product can be improved to become a high grade chromite product by means of a refinement in mineral processing. A detailed Qemscan® database (SIP file) was developed to account for variations in chromite chemistries. It can be shown that chemical variations with respect to Cr, Al, Mg and Fe in chromite particles reporting to the scavenger tails are larger than in the high grade product. A combination of these chemical variations together with a decrease in liberation of chromite particles in the scavenger tails can potentially help to recover more chromite particles from this specific process stream.

A positive displacement pump is being dev eloped for pipeline transportation of coking coal to a -50 mm export specification, at a con- centration and velocity which will allow trans- portation in the plug flow region, minimising degradation of the particle structure, and pipe= line friction losses which will be lower than with turbulent or laminar flow. Pump operation is by hydraulic powered free pistons in a rota- ting cylinder block, with cylinders overlapped by stationary inlet and discharge ports in a water lubricated and sealed rotary valve. Before this development coking coal was not considered suitable for transportation in slurry form, for the valves in the double act- ing duplex piston pumps used for slurry pipe- lines, cannot be divorced from the slurry and require that the solid material must be reduced to a fines'consistency before introduction into the pump suction. The hydraulic transportation of 10 million tonnes of -50 mm coking coal, 50 km from the Bargo area west of the escarpment to an offshore shiploader at Port Kembla is feasible. Study shows that economic factors alone would dictate that the development of a pumping system for long distance transportation of coking coal is necessary. 1. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) is a computer based model whose objective is to quantify the risks of hard rock tunneling in terms of cost and time to completion. The main feature of the TCM is the simulation of the tunnel construction. The simulation makes it possible to incorporate in the time and cost computations the effect of uncertainties in geologic conditions and in productivity rates and costs. The cost and time computed with the TCM will be in form of distributions that allow a quantitative risk assessment. The TCM will be useful as an estimating tool permitting the estimator to rigorously relate uncertainties of individual factors to the end result. The TCM will also make it possible to evaluate technological innovations and to identify problem areas in existing technologies. The TCM consists of three interacting submodels: the geologic submodel, the construction operations submodel and the tunnel simulator. The goal of this paper is to describe the geologic submodel, whereas the construction operations submodel and the tunnel simulator will be described in the following paper by Moavenzadeh et al. First it will be shown how interactions between the geologic submodel and other parts of the TCM will impose certain requirements on the geologic submodel. These requirements, which relate primarily to the description of geologic conditions by a set of problem-oriented parameters and the quantification of uncertainty associated with geologic conditions, will then be discussed. I was asked by the chairman of one of the Sessions on Employment Problems to talk about the viewpoint of the foreign workingman. I am not a workingman. I have never done what a work-hand might call an honest day's labor; that is, I have never been in a factory or manufacturing plant or in a mine, though in truth, hard work and I are well acquainted. I was a soldier, am an engineer, have long been actively interested in the most important waterway construction in the near East, have served politics and diplomacy, written books and lectured at universities. My knowledge of the foreign workingman in this country comes from the fact that my own compatriots here at various times came to me and appealed for advice and help, and last year I was asked by the employment manager of a corporation to undertake a welfare job at one of their plants. I went out, saw the plant, talked with the superintendent and outlined certain of my ideas which he personally heartily approved, but which did not find favor with those higher up. I approach the subject of the foreign workman's point of view with the understanding that the industrial employer's effort is for the maximum of efficiency. I am conversant with labor conditions abroad both in industry and agriculture. What I have learned of industrial conditions in America as they affect the foreign immigrant has been chiefly gathered from the cases referred to of foreign workmen who from time to time have come to me with their troubles. In the course of those investigations, in order to give whatever help or advice was possible, I have been impressed with the fact that the great United States industries evidently had not yet sufficiently recognized the value of studying the conditions of the workingman in the lands of his origin across the seas. A careful study of that which could be called the moral element in connection with its foreign labor would give industry a knowledge of the man's reason for coming, what grievances he brings with him, his hopes for a future, and the peculiar character of his capacities. The employer would thereby be enabled to meet the man, to be helpful to him, to aid him and at the same time promote industrial efficiency, inasmuch as a workman who believes that he is being dealt with humanly and squarely is contented and satisfied and will give willingly, and even with pride, the best that is in him; justice and a 'air deal is all the man wants.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other sections of 1992 Minerals Yearbook-International Review, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition is due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible to complete, without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart national mining and geological agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, our appreciation is expressed to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

I was asked here today to discuss the first long-term freight rate contract ever signed by a U.S. railroad and shipper. That was ICG's contract with the hoosier energy company to haul coal from southern Illinois to an Indiana power plant. I?ll also talk about why you can expect to see more such contracts in the future But first, let me tell you a little bit about the Illinois central gulf railroad and why coal contracts are so important to us. ICG is a principal mid-American freight carrier. We are one of the ten largest railroads in the united states and one of the ten largest coal-hauling railroads. ICG links the industrial great lakes region with the warm weather ports of the gulf coast. Some of the major points on our route map are Chicago; Indianapolis; Omaha; Kansas City; Memphis; St. Louis; and, of course, baton rouge and new Orleans.

Introduction SINCE about 70 per cent. of the total cost of mining is due to underground work which is out of sight, it is essential that expenditures should be made here to the best advantage. A great many mistakes have been made which were expensive, but perhaps these have not even been detected by mine owners. In the future these may be minimized to some extent, especially if there is cooperative effort on the part of each employee. I have been interested in this subject for some years and have tried to deduce principles and methods. These have proved highly advantageous and may also be of help to others. Some corporations, like the United States Steel, and the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have done a great deal in this field by having stated meetings of their organizations, with the view to interchanging ideas among their men and educating them along the lines of concerted effort. Since no man knows all about the various branches of mining, it is advisable that frequent meetings of the operating department be held for the interchange of ideas and that all members of the organization have an opportunity to express themselves on the various subjects. It has often been found that in discussions between heads of departments, foremen and bosses, many valuable suggestions may be obtained which promote the best interests of the company. The method regarded as the most conducive to cooperative effort, and pursued by the organization, is to analyze and develope the different phases of various mining subjects at regular meetings.

Meteor Crater, Arizona, is a natural wonder which for years has been the subject of considerable discussion and study as to its origin and age (Fig. 1). Of the various theories advanced regarding the origin, two have been considered as most probable by a majority of investigators. The first theory is that the crater was formed by a meteorite or a swarm of meteoric material striking the earth at a high velocity and burying itself. The second theory is that the crater was formed by a "steam explosion" from hot solutions or gases coming from underneath the present sedimentary beds which overlie the area. In order to obtain more detailed information regarding the conditions existing at the crater, the present management decided to have a detailed geophysical examination made. The origin of the crater is of considerable scientific importance and interest. More or less active mining operations have been carried out during the past 20 years by various groups who believed that the crater was of meteoric origin, and who hoped that sufficient quantities of such material had been buried to be commercially valuable. Fragments of meteoric material found on the surface of the ground in the debris around the rim gave analysis of approximately 92 per cent iron and 8 per cent nickel, with some platinum and iridium. The material having a gross value of approximately $50 per ton, mining would be commercially profitable if sufficient quantities of the material existed in condition for mining. In the early work numerous drill holes and shallow shafts were put down, mainly in the northern portion of the crater. Pulverized material and debris caused considerable difficulty, and in an effort to overcome this the present management started a 1500-ft., two-compartment shaft on the south rim of the crater and outside of the fill zone. The intention was to sink the shaft in the solid rock outside of the crater, and then to crosscut toward the crater at a depth of 1500 ft. The work was finally stopped when a depth of 650 ft. was reached, because water poured into the shaft through large cracks and fissures in the rock.
