1.0 PROLOG Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. The basis for this paper is an unpublished technology primer prepared for the industry-government Workshop on Advanced Measurement and Site Characterization for Mining Impacts held at Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado, July 14-17, 1997

The Texas Department of Transportation, now considering using Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Piles (also known as Continuous-Flight-Auger or CFA Piles) in their foundations, awarded a research project to Professor Mike O'Neill at the University of Houston (UH) to study the advantages and potential difficulties with ACIP/CFA piles. ACIP/CFA piles were installed on three sites for UH; they had extra instrumentation and additional measurements by UH staff during installation which are beyond the scope of this paper. Independent visual logging of the pile was done by an experienced inspection firm. The main advantages of ACIP/CFA piles are their speed of installation and their economy. Potential savings are substantial. Disadvantages include an unknown structural condition of the shaft. Inspection is critical, but many simultaneous observations make accurate inspection difficult. Because of resulting uncertainty, many engineers have avoided ACIP/CFA piles in the past.

En el Perú, al igual que otros distritos mineros extranjeros, diversas plantas mineras optaron por utilizar oxígeno en los tanques de cianuración de oro para mejorar su rendimiento. En ese sentido, este procedimiento puede compensar la reducida cantidad de oxígeno disponible en las alturas. Por ello, el presente texto señala las diferencias que existen entre la inyección de aire y oxígeno a nivel del mar, como ocurre a grandes alturas en mejora del rendimiento de la lixiviación de oro. Asimismo, los mecanismos de este procedimento son revisados y propuestos para explicar cómo el transporte de oxígeno mejora el rendimiento en la lixiviación de oro y reduce el consumo de cianuro.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine whether it is possible to substantially improve the fatigue resistance of lead sheet by means of surface coatings. Five types of coatings were applied to unalloyed chemical lead sheet. Flexural tests revealed that the best fatigue resistance was obtained with coatings of vacuum grease. Vacuum-grease coatings on unalloyed lead sheet resulted in fatigue resistance at least as good as that of the fatigue-resistant alloy Pb-0.04 Ca. Coated lead sheet was also tested in short-time tensile tests and in tensile creep tests. Tensile and yield strengths were increased by several of the coatings with only moderate loss of ductility. Creep resistance was also improved in varying degrees by most of the coatings. The Bureau also conducted research on the effectiveness of noise barriers by using sheet lead in combination with other materials. Noise barriers consisting of continuous-cast sheet lead with gypsum board were found to be effective and relatively inexpensive barriers.

INTRODUCTION The neutron-garnma log has been used for stratigraphic correlation by the oil industry for a number of years. In the past few years, the quantitative application of the log to provide information with respect to porosity has received considerable attention. The basic concept of quantitative interpretation has been pointed out in the literature.1 It shall be the purpose of this paper to develop by empirical means a method whereby the relationship of porosity to neu. tron-gamma deflection may be predicted for various bore hole diameters. This relationship is applicable to the present commercially available neutron-gamma log run in open hole. Data available at present are insufficient to establish similar correlations for cased holes. Through the development of such a correlation, the importance of the various factors which influence the log become evident. NEUTRON-GAMMA CURVE The logging tool conisists of a source of neutrons and a means of detecting and measuring gamma rays, the detector being shielded from the direct emission from the source. The gamma rays reaching the detector have three sources of origin: (1) the natural gamma radiation emitted by the formations, (211 induced gamma radiation resulting from neutron bombardment. (3) gamma rays emitted by the source and scattered by the formation. It has been found that a neutron derived porosity correlation is best for shale-free formations. Under this condition the natural gamma ray radiation is quite low, and therefore, will be neglected in this work. The induced gamma ray radiation resulting from neutron bombardment is predominantly a function of the hydrogen atom concentration of the substance penetrated. Due to the geometry of the presently used system, the neutron-gamma curve indicates low radioactivity opposite high hydrogen concentration and high radioactivity opposite low hydrogen concentration (Figs. 1 and 2). Having a curve which measures hydrogen atom concentration, it follows that if the matrix of the formation penetrated consists only of atoms other than hydrogen, and if the fluid filling the pores is either oil or water, the curve should be an indication of porosity (both oil and water have practically the same number of hydrogen atoms per unit volume'). The above criteria for a porosity (Correlation are fulfilled in clean sandztones and limestones in which the pore volume is completely filled with liquids (oil or water), but not in formations containing either free gas or shale or both. Free gas. even under pressure, contains considerably less hydrogen per unit volume than oil and water; therefore, a variation in response on the curve would be expected. Camp- bell and Winter,' indicate that this difference in hydrogen concentration is sufficient to distinguish between sands containing water or oil and those containing dry gas. Shale is a mineral that contains hydrogen in its molecular structure in addition to the hydrogen which is present in the water of hydration. Thus, in formations containing variable amounts of shale, the hydrogen concentration indicated by the curve is not a direct indication of porosity. Bush and Mardock' have indicated that a correction may be made by use of the gamma ray curve to provide a porosity correlation. Since the induced gamma rays are predominaiitly a function of hydrogen concentration, it would be anticipated that the fluid filled bore hole would materially influence the logs. It has been pointed out that the neutron-gamma curve response decreases with increase in hydrogen concentration, therefore, the response due to the induced gamma ray component decreases with increase in fluid filled hore hole diameter. Introduction Most primary molybdenite producers use a selective flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and nonsulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step. The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother), and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide, and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born et al. (1976) and Malhotra et al. (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50% of the total molybdenite flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors that would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate nonoil-based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil. A series of potential nonoil-based collector classes were identified and evaluated in the laboratory against the current collector system. The metallurgical performance of these collector classes was related to their chemical structures. The results of this study are discussed. Collector classes A survey of sulfide mineral collectors was performed with the objective of identifying and selecting potential collectors for molybdenite flotation. The available reagents were categorized into 10 general classes. Table 1 summarizes these collector classes, their chemical formulas, the manufacturers, and selected commercial collectors in each class that were evaluated in the present study. Experimental procedure A Climax ore sample, assaying 0.3% MoS2, 2.2% FeS2, 0.007% Cu, 0.003% Pb, and 0.03 oz per ton Ag, was used for this study. Standard laboratory rougher flotation test procedure involved grinding a 2-kg ore charge in a rod mill at 60% solids. Reagents were added to the rod mill including a collector, syntex (0.005 kg/t), pine oil (0.03 kg/t), lime (to adjust pH to 8), and sodium silicate (0.15 kg/t). The ground pulp was transferred to a 1000-g cell, and flotation was performed at 35% solids and 1800 rpm using a Denver D-1 flotation machine. Concentrate was collected for a flotation time of six minutes. The general approach used in the present study was to substitute the nonoil-based collectors at two to three different dosage levels (0.01 to 0.15 kg/t) for vapor oil in the bench-scale, open-circuit rougher flotation tests

The electrochemistry of leaching gold with thiosulphate has been studied systematically by using electrochemical techniques. Results show that the current peak of anodic dissolution of gold occurs at about 50 mV(SCE) and there is passivation in the polarisation curve in the thiosulphate solution in the absence of ammonia. Ammonia markedly improves the anodic dissolution rate of gold and reduces the passivation as well as making the current peak shift negatively. Results also show that there is no current peak for a cathodic process in the range of 0 -900 mV(SCE) in the thiosulphate solution in the presence of oxygen but absence of cupric ions and ammonia. In the solution containing 0. 1 mol/L cupric-ammonia ions, the peak occurs at about -400 mV (SCE) and the cathodic process is characteristic of a catalytic reaction. Oxygen presents a predominate effect on the cathodic process. Based on the electrochemical investigation, the following mechanism of leaching gold with ammoniacal thiosulphate has been proposed. Ammonia reacts primarily with gold ions on th anodic surface of gold and the formed A (NH3)2+ rea~s then with S2O 3 in solution to form the stabler Au(S203) 2 . Cu (NHS) 4 gains electrons on the cathodic surface and is reduced to CU(N) ? which is then oxidised by oxygen and regenerated into Cu(NH3) 4 after entering the solution.

The importance of condensing the gases which escape from furnaces so as to save both the fine particles of ore carried off mechanically and those which are volatilized, has for a long time occupied the serious attention of metallurgists in all parts of the world. It was my good fortune during the last summer to visit the lead and silver works at Ems, near Coblentz on the Rhine, and through the politeness of Mr. Freudenberg, general director of the works, to study in detail their methods of condensation, and to receive from him the important results which have been obtained through a series of experiments lasting over a number of years. I have thought, that these results would be of great interest to the members of the Institute and to other metallurgists in the United States, and I have, therefore, with the assistance of Mr. Freudenberg, prepared a careful, detailed description of the construction of the flues, as well as an account of the various experiments which have been made with them, and the conclusions arrived at as the result of these experiments. It may be said, in general, that the reason why so little attention has been paid in the metallurgical works of the United States to the collection of flue-dust, is that we are not generally aware of the large amount of material carried off by the gases. This is owing partly to the fact that little or no attention is paid to the subject, and also to the fact that the assays, which are almost invariably made in the dry way, show a result so much below the real contents

At the Zolder mine a S/7 computer is used for two purposes : - to monitor production at the coal face - to monitor the distribution of mine cars. By using sensors attached to equipment at the coal face and at the loading points, the computer provides realtime information and also summarized reports, which help management to control production better. The computer will display this information to the control room, where two operators monitor all production events and the availability of the right numbers of mine cars at every production face. All benefits obtained from the system are described.

Sodium sulfide is used extensively to increase the recovery of oxidized copper and lead minerals by flotation, particularly when using xanthates as collectors. It is generally assumed that the sodium sulfide converts a film of the oxidized mineral to the sulfide, and that the xanthate, while not a very effective collector for the oxidized minerals, is a good collector for the sulfide. On the other hand, Taggart and his collaborators1 claim that unless sulfide minerals are oxidized they cannot adsorb xanthates and do not float. Gaudin2 states that amyl xanthate, used in conjunction with sodium sulfide, gives better results than ethyl xanthate. Rabone3 and Mayer-Schranz4 agree that excess of sulfide functions as a depressant. Owing to the greater solubilities of the oxidized minerals than of the sulfides, the consumption of sodium sulfide is greater than that of most other flotation reagents, up to 10 lb. per ton of ore being used in some plants. Luyken and Bierbrauer5 recommend a water washing to remove soluble heavy metal salts; by this means sulfide consumption may be reduced. It was desirable to determine the limits of the sulfide concentrations between which contact is possible at surfaces of anglesite and cerussite in xanthate solutions. Similar determinations were desirable for the sulfide minerals with which the oxidized minerals are usually associated, since conditions should be chosen, if possible, so that the two types of mineral will float together. Because of the formation, especially in acid solutions, of hydrogen sulfide and of the hydrosulfide ion (HS-), the permissible limits of sulfide addition are obviously dependent upon the pH value. Sphalerite responds to ethyl xanthate only in the presence of an activator; for example, copper sulfate. It was necessary, therefore, to determine whether sodium sulfide interferes with the activation of sphalerite by copper sulfate. The combined effect of sulfide and copper sulfate was determined also for galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite.

O processo de fusão seletiva a laser (FSL) é comumente utilizado na manufatura aditiva de materiais metálicos, sendo este um processo rápido no qual as peças são formadas camada por camada. Neste processo uma fonte de laser varre o leito de pó e seleciona as regiões a serem fundidas, através da alta intensidade de potência aplicada, de acordo com o projeto digital proposto, para obter peças com boa densidade. Embora a FSL apresente diversas vantagens, em relação aos processos de fabricação convencionais, esta ainda é de alto custo para indústria. A otimização de parâmetros de processamento desta tecnologia para as ligas com memória de forma vem sendo explorada. As ligas NiTi com memória de forma se destacam por apresentarem o efeito memória de forma e a superelasticidade, o que lhe confere várias aplicações práticas. Otimizar, no processo da FSL para essas ligas, o parâmetro densidade de energia do laser, é fundamental para obter as peças com boas propriedades mecânicas e baixa porosidade. Com isso, este trabalho tem como objetivo observar e criticar a influência dos parâmetros de processamento na microestrutura e porosidade dos corpos de prova de ligas de NiTi manufaturados via FSL.

Palabora Mining Company is operating a copper block cave mine in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The mine was developed in the late nineties with a target ore reserve of 220 million tonnes of carbonatite at 0.69% copper. At 30,000 tonnes per day the operation had an estimated life of mine of approximately 23 years. Cave induced open pit side wall failure occurred in late 2004 with 130 million tonnes of waste reporting to the bottom of the open pit. This failure resulted in potential sterilization and dilution of the ore reserve and subsequent reduction in life of mine. Physical and numerical modelling indicated potential losses of up to 30% of the original ore reserves. Cave Management tools based on throughput principles are utilized to manage the failed waste ingress and ensure an optimum life of mine. Extracting the maximum rate possible, as soon as draw points are commissioned, with the view of achieving the highest production in the short term, is any mining operation?s goal as more money is required sooner. This approach, of course, improves the cash flow but presents a risk in the cave propagation profile as overall draw control is compromised. At Palabora it is evident from a Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MRTM) point of view that maximum production in the short term is not the solution. If high production rates are achieved and the profile of the cave is not manage correctly, this results in failed waste reporting to draw points earlier with adverse effects on grade. This would effectively and significantly shorten Palabora?s Life of Mine. The applications of good MRTM principles are required to assist the value chain for sustained profitability. The process commenced with change management paving the way for a better understanding and a holistic view for all role players.

Troy Resources acquired the Karouni Gold Project in Guyana, South America in 2014 and immediately proceeded to a Pre-Feasibility Study and project implementation. The study considered two open pit mines feeding a conventional carbon in leach (CIL) gold plant with a capacity of 1Mtpa. The study assumed a total of 2.61 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 3.84 g/t gold with a recovered gold production of 303,526 ounces over a three year mine life.The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, securing second-hand major pieces of equipment where suitable, and arranging shipping to Guyana. The remote location meant logistical considerations were paramount. The plant consists of conventional two-stage crushing with single stage ball milling and a gravity circuit. The tailings circuit includes DETOX.The extremely high rainfall presented challenges with water management and the necessity to dispose of clean water to the environment. The DETOX was also mandatory due to the highly sensitive environment and past history in the area. The criticality of this meant that in the design, any cyanide in the tailings would precipitate in a plant shutdown.Lessons were learned and the project has been both profitable and successful for Troy Resources in a new operating location. In addition, the project has created jobs, delivered royalties and brought new skills into an area where previously there was little current mining activity.CITATION:Nilsson, K and Connelly, D, 2015. PHOSPHATE occurs in many places in Egypt,. in two main zones: one in Upper Egypt, along the Nile Valley, principally on the right side, and one near the Red Sea coast. In the Nile zone, the principal layers of phosphate rock are to be found: in the mountains east of Mahamid (right side of the valley); in the hills near Sibaiya, also called Sebaieh (both sides); in the hills of Agula, Hagaza and Gurn (right side); and further on, along the cancel road leading from Kena to Kosseir, a few miles east of Legheita's Oasis. Following, that track, after, having crossed the watershed, underlain by rocks like granite, serpentine, porphyry and diabase, one comes again to the Cretaceous formation containing considerable quantities of phosphate, at Gebel Duwi, Gebel Nakheil and Gebel Kosseir El Kadim, not far from the coast. More to the north, in the hills near Safaga Bay (Um El Uettat El Wasif) is another rich bed of the same formation. There are reports of phosphate existing near Suez and in the Sinai peninsula, and possibly some other zones can be traced or discovered in the future. The mines are well developed on the right bank of the Nile at Sharawna (near Sebaieh Station) and along the Red Sea coast, at' Safaga and near Kosseir. Prospecting work has been done at Gebel Duwi, Gebel Gurn, Agula, Hagaza, and near Mahamid. The phosphatic formation in Egypt is quite variable, not only from place to place, but even within small areas. The phosphate is all of Cretaceous age, as is proved by the fossils found in it. It is considered to belong to the Campanian or, more appropriately, to the Maestrichtian series. The principal fossils are: Alectryonia Villei Coq. sp.; Roudereia Auressensis Coq. sp.- R. Drui Mun. Chalm.; Trigonoarca multidentata, Newton.; Cardita libyca, Zittel; Libycoceras Ismäely, Zittel; Nautilus sp.; Ancystrodon libycum Dam.; Corax pristodontus Ag.; Lamma biauriculata Zittel sp. Above the Maestrichtian beds, we have the Danian series, unconformably covered by Lower Eocene beds. Under the phosphate is a grayish marly clay, and beneath this, bluish-gray scaly shales resting on the Nubian sandstone (Santonian).

Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar a aplicação das técnicas de laminação termomecânica de aços microligados para obtenção de propriedades mecânicas elevadas em um laminador Steckel. O processamento de um aço com composição química favorável à obtenção de propriedades mecânicas compatíveis com o grau X60 especificado na norma API 5L é demonstrado. Foram alcançados limites de escoamento a 0,5% de deformação e a resistência à tração mínimos de 473MPa e 549MPa respectivamente, alongamento médio de 38%, razão elástica em 86% e temperatura de transição dúctil frágil em torno de -50°C atendendo às especificações da norma.
