Plastic anisotropy determined by the ratio of width strain to thickness strain in tensile specimens of low-carbon steels is strongly related to crystallographic preferred orientation. Using(222) Pole figures, a method was developed which permits rapid Predictions of plastic anisotropy for any crystallographic texture or orientation. The method is applied to low-carbon steel sheets in which four different crystallographic orientations were produced by variations in cold rolling and annealing treatments. AnISOTROPIC behavior of metal sheets during plastic deformation has long been evident. A familiar example is earing in cup type draws. During tension testing of sheet specimens, anisotropy results in a difference in width strain as compared with thickness strain. Carpenter and Elam1 observed this phenomenon in single crystals of aluminum for both sheet and rod samples. Lankford, Snyder, and Bauscher2 made tension tests on sheet samples of aluminum-killed low-carbon steel to determine the ratio of the width-to-thickness strains, and showed that this ratio was related to drawing performance. Burns and Heyer3 calculated theoretical ratios of width strain to thickness strain for two specific orientations of the bee system, using <111> as the operative slip direction. These calculated values were in fairly good agreement with the ratios determined by tension tests of low-carbon steel sheets in which these preferred orientations existed. The high degree of plastic anisotropy of silicon steel sheets could also be predicted from their crystallographic structure by these calculations. The present study has been made to show that the anisotropy observed in plastic tensile straining is strongly orientation dependent and can be adequately predicted for many orientations and textures. Well planned and executed environmental management plans can reduce life-of-mine operating costs and the need to deal with major environmental issues at the time of mine closure. With proper planning during the exploration, feasibility and execution phases of a project, final closure costs can be reduced. The reduction of closure costs should be considered during exploration and initial feasibility studies and when process facilities, waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments are designed. During the mining of the resource, closure cost reduction will depend on effective and efficient environmental management plans for ongoing land clearance, segregation of mine waste materials, management of mine site water and workshop wastewaters, and the establishment of progressive rehabilitation strategies. These issues are the responsibility of planning, production, technical support and maintenance personnel at an operating site. The successful implementation of environmental plans will ensure that all impacts are reduced and that closure issues with major cost implications are addressed prior to closure of the mine.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (?CERCLA?), as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 ("SARA?) establishes a comprehensive Federal regulatory program for addressing environmental and public health risks posed by releases of hazardous substances into the environment from a wide variety of industrial and other sources. The statute is primarily administered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA"). The applicability of CERCLA to the mining, milling, and smelting industries (hereinafter referred to as the ?mining industry?) has been upheld by the courts and recently affirmed by Congress. The purpose of this article is to briefly outline the scope of CERCLA as it applies to the mining industry, the scope of EPA&apos;s activities pertaining to the mining industry under CERCLA, the types of remedies which may be pursued by EPA, and the liability scheme of CERCLA as it applies to corporate entities, managers, and shareholders involved with the mining industry. Natural resource damage claims, State cooperative agreements, and other State-related issues will not be discussed.

Sampling methods for feasibility studies are dependent on geological characteristics of the deposit being evaluated. A preliminary geostatistical study is required, taking into account autocorrelation aspects of variables under study in order that sample plan design can be optimized to produce grade and tonnage estimates within stipulated error limits. In general, regular sample distribution is to be aimed for, and regular sample lengths (from drill core or cuttings, for example) are preferred in order to facilitate statistical analysis. Sample plans are modified and improved (either technically or economically), as a sampling program proceeds and additional information is obtained. Bulk samples for metallurgical testing can be evaluated in terms of the variance shown by all such samples in a deposit and the internal variability of grade. Attention to these sources of variability will ensure proper evaluation of pilot test results from bulk samples. In addition, a general mineralogical study of a deposit is an important, often ignored, requirement in a more general but semi-quantitative evaluation of the representativeness of a bulk sample; and, moreover, provides information useful in optimizing plant design.

Discussion by P. Malozemoff I have no objection to using mathematics in the value appraisal of properties. The factor that is not emphasized in the paper is that very few important properties have a lifetime that reflects the initial ore reserves of the property divided by the rate of production adopted. In the majority of cases, major properties mine out several times the initial reserves. How much more will be mined out is not known, and only exceptionally gifted geologists can predict that additional reserves will be found. There is the further factor of metals price, which, over the long term, is not predictable. Another factor vitiating making calculations on initially established ore reserves is the speculative nature of exploration success. In my judgment, the life of a property, in addition to an established ore reserve, should include ample time for exploration to find additional reserves. The likelihood of additional reserves is based on the geological promise of the general area where the mine is established. This is especially important because of various risk factors associated with small orebodies, the economic life of which is about five to seven years. In underground mines, it is not economic to develop reserves beyond a certain depth, so the life of initially established reserves must be limited. In these cases, it is especially important to have a good geological understanding of the orebody and its continuity. To accommodate these concepts and present proof of economic soundness for a mining enterprise, a mathematical analysis should yield a life long enough to allow exploration and the development of additional reserves that would ensure a longer mine life and a more profitable result.

Salt, or halite, has a long and most varied history. While we know the Chinese were producing salt as early as 3000 B.C., the first written reference to salt appears in the book of Job recorded about 2250 B.C., which reads: "Can nothing which is unsavory be eaten without salt?" We do not know when man first used or realized that he needed salt. Perhaps one of our early Eolithic ancestors noted a piece of salt shining along the shore of a salt lake or a bay. He may have been attracted by its shining luster and tasted it. He found that it had a tart, zesty, distinctive flavor and perhaps chewing a large piece, became ill. However, by experimentation he soon learned that taken in the proper proportions salt was a very pleasant additive to his food. He may have noticed, too, that it increased his feeling of well-being. Thus, when the curtain of recorded history rises, we find man using salt for his health&apos;s sake, seasoning his food with it, feeding it to his animals, and using it in many superstitious and religious ceremonies. These uses, however, are a far cry from the uses for salt today. The first attempts of white man to make salt in continental United States were reported in the year 1614, while the first commercial production was in 1753 from the Kanawha licks. Practically all this salt was for human consumption, preserving food, and curing hides. Prior to the coming of the white man, Indians are known to have made salt from salt springs such as those that existed at Avery Island, LA, Charleston, WV, Saltville, VA, and Onondaga, NY. In 1862 the first rock salt was mined in the US from the Avery Island salt dome. Almost immediately thereafter, rock salt was mined at Saltville, VA and then at Retsof, NY in 1885. Of the more than 39 million tons produced annually in the United States, about 58% or 23 million tons are consumed by the chemical industry in the production of chlorine, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, sodium metal, and some 30 other basic chemicals. These basic chemicals, in turn, are used in the preparation of approximately 14,000 chemicals which range from soap and detergents, to such chlorinated hydrocarbons as DDT, BHC, carbon tetrachloride, etc. Utilization of cavities created in salt beds and domes has grown rapidly since 1947 until now the waste salt is creating an ecological problem. The uses for both dry- and solution-mined cavities range from the storage of liquid hydrocarbons to containerized storage of toxic wastes, from compressed air for the peak shaving of power to storage of nuclear wastes. Geology Mineralogy Properties: Because of its simple structure, halite, the mineralogical name for salt, was the first structure to be analyzed by X-rays. It is usually assumed that chemical specifications are sufficient for steel to be used for case carburizing, and if the steel analyzes within the ordinary limits specified for steel for this purpose, no difficulty traceable to the steel used should be encountered in obtaining satisfactory results in the case carburizing and hardening. Much work has been done to determine the effect of various alloying elements on the rate of carbon penetration, etc. but, to our knowledge, little if anything has been published in regard to the effeet of the quality of the steel on the final results in the hardening of case-carburized steel parts. The writers believe that the structure of the case both before and after quenching is greatly affected by the actual condition of the steel itself as made, and that for good results in the case-carburizing and hardening departments, the steel should be of the best possible quality as regards non-metallic impurities. It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the presence of excess dissolved oxides in the steel, as made in the melting furnace, affects permanently the results obtained in carburizing and hardening and that it is possible that the presence of dissolved oxide call result in total unfit-ness of low-carbon steel for case hardening purposes. When races and rolls for roller bearings are made from a low-carbon steel, case carburized and hardened, it is of primary importance that the results of this treatment be of the highest quality. It is necessary, therefore, that in the case-carburizing work each detail be rigorously checked to avoid any defects which would cause the loss of much time and material. The case carburizing with which this paper deals was done in under-fired oil furnaces. The temperature of each furnace is controlled by means of a platinum platinum-rhodium thermocouple, in connection with a potentiometer indicator and potentiometer recorder. The temperature of each furnace is registered every 15 min. by an operator, who is continually checked by the automatic recorders.

Influence of Sr and Mn single and combined additions on the modification of the Fe-containing intermetallic compounds and mechanical properties of Fe-rich AA319 aluminum alloys have been investigated, The microstructural features e,g, morphology of the Fe compounds and eutectic Si has been correlated to the mechanical properties, It was demonstrated that modification of the Fe compounds from the platelet ß-Al5FeSi to the Chinese script a-Al8Fe2Si compound improves the UTS and elongation of the alloys by 10.3% and 83.9%, respectively. Moreover, the simultaneous modification of the Fe compounds and eutectic Si increases the UTS and elongation of the alloys by 15,3% and 116,1%, respectively.

Coaxial cable structures form the subject of substantial theoretical and experimental investigations either directly related, or which can be extrapolated, to the communications needs and environments of U.S. coal mines. Communication systems based on "guided" waves, of which "leaky" coaxial cables are one implementation, are attractive candidates for providing a range of communication functions primarily along haulage ways, and possible also within sections up to the working face. (However, there are still strong reservations as to whether a practical coaxial cable sys tem could provide sufficient communications coverage within a section. ) In this Part, we present the results of some theoretical calculations of the performance of leaky coaxial cable communication systems. We also analyze the applicability of the theoretical and experimental results obtained by other researchers to the needs of U.S. coal mines. In particular, this investigation has been focused on the utility of relatively low cost, conventional, flexible, coaxial cable at frequencies covering the LF through HF bands and extending into the lower part of the VHF band, as opposed to relatively high cost, special semi-rigid, coaxial cable* at frequencies in the VHF and UHF bands. There are three major design alternatives for coaxial cable communication systems considered in this chapter: • Base station feeding a coaxial cable with high surface transfer impedance (holes in outer conductor, e.g., braid construction). • Base station feeding a coaxial cable with repeaters (U.K. experiments). • No base station, direct communication via a coaxial cable with periodic radiative structures.

Nearly 55 years have elapsed since the U. S. Geological Survey was organized. During this period the mineral industries have grown from infancy or early childhood to well developed maturity, and some mining industries appear to be declining. Decline in mining is even more conspicuous in certain districts, or even states, than in any mining industry as a whole, and discoveries or developments of important new districts have been very few in recent years. Our reserves of most metals and nonmetals are adequate for many years of normal production, subject to changes in rate of exploitation that may be caused by foreign competition and by changes in technology and market conditions; but the declining production of many districts and the scarcity of important new discoveries to compensate for them is cause for some apprehension. It is likely that future production will depend to a considerable extent on deep exploration and on the thorough examination of places in and adjoining existing districts where significant outcrops are lacking and only apparently insignificant geologic features offer encouraging clues—more so than on the discovery of entirely new districts. Even the possible discovery of new districts, which have escaped the intensive search by the nontechnical prospector, must be dependent on geologic information. There is therefore no need for argument as to the value of geology to the mining industry; and the need of continuing to advance the science. The U. S. Geological Survey&apos;s past contributions to mining geology, as expressed in its official reports and other publications, are recognized by Ransome in his historical review of mining geology in the Lindgren volume.&apos; These contributions have helped to form the basis of modern mining geology, which has grown rapidly in the last 25 years. This growth has witnessed the organization and maintenance of geologic staffs by mining companies in several districts, and their detailed work, together with the fact that nearly all of the larger mining districts have

Discussion by B. Mather I was very glad to see an article on alkali-silica reactivity of concrete aggregate in Mining Engineering. It is a topic that should be reexamined every 45 or 50 years. The last paper (that I am aware of) that examined this topic in Mining Engineering was Rexford (1950), who, at the time, was chief of the Petrography Section, South Pacific Division Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles, CA. The paper was presented at the AIME meeting in Los Angeles in October 1948. Professor Leming&apos;s discussion generally reflects the current state-of-the-art; but it provides no references for more detailed information. I wrote a paper titled "How to avoid excessive expansion of concrete due to alkali-aggregate reaction," which was included in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Hydroelectric Plants and Dams (Mather, 1995). In it, I emphasized that it was the hydroxide ion (not the alkali ion) that caused the pore fluid in the concrete to dissolve reactive silica, producing alkali-silica gel capable of taking up water, thereby, causing swelling and rupturing of the concrete. Excessive expansion will not occur unless there is a sufficient amount of potentially expansive alkali-silica reaction product and water. However, this will not occur unless there is a sufficient quantity of reactive aggregate and unless there is a mechanism by which the pH of the pore fluid can get well above the normal value of about 12.6. In many cases it is sufficient that the cementitious medium not only contains portland cement but also contains ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) or a pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, volcanic glass or calcined shale - any of which may have been included for economic reasons. If, however, the person selecting the ingredients for concrete knows that the aggregate is reactive (with no alternate nonreactive aggregate available) and if the person knows that the only available portland cement has a high alkali content (i.e., more than 0.6% Na2Oe; Na2Oe = % Na2O + 0.658 x % K20), then it becomes irresponsible not to establish what reasonable precaution one should take. Professor Leming suggests using one of the following: 30% Class F fly ash, 50% GGBFS or 7% to 10% silica fume. My view is that one should prepare test specimens with the cement and aggregate to be used and then expose these both with and without at least two dosages of each of the various alternative materials (slag, pozzolan and lithium salts), so that the required dosage to control the expansion is established. Then, economic considerations can dictate the final selection. I would point out to the author that GGBFS is not a pozzolan and is not an admixture, but, rather, it is a latent hydraulic cement. An admixture is, by definition, a material other than hydraulic cement. I commend him for suggesting that aggregate producers should become more active in knowing about the reactivity of their products and the precautions needed to permit those products to be safely used in concrete. ? I am grateful to him for bringing these issues to my attention, as well as to the readers, and I am grateful for his discussion of several important factors in alkali-silica reactivity. Mr. Mather&apos;s discussion of the mechanism of alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) notes the critical role of the hydroxide ion. While the alkali hydroxides are highly soluble (reducing the solubility of the other primary hydroxide in pore solution, i.e., calcium hydroxide, and providing hydroxide ions that initiate alkali-silica reactivity), it is, as Mr. Mather quite correctly notes, the hydroxide ion that attacks the silica structure. This point was not clearly stated in my original article. As noted in the text, the requirements for mineral admixtures to mitigate or control ASR vary widely depending on the specific characteristics of the materials

Measurements have been made of the variation of internal friction with temperature for OFHC copper, and for a series of binary solid solutions of high purity copper with zinc, gallium, germanium, arsenic, and silicon, to investigate the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity. The apparatus used was of the torsional pendulum type developed by KeI1 modified so that the specimen and vibrating system could be maintained in a high vacuum. The activation energy for grain boundary relaxation in copper is 33,000 cal per mol. This is considerably less than the activation energy for self-diffusion, in disagreement with Ke&apos;s theory2 that the two activation energies should be the same. All the alloying elements increase the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation to approximately 44,000 cal per mol, increasing the grain boundary viscosity at a given temperature. The results are discussed in terms of theories of grain boundary slip put forward by MottQ and by Ke.+ Experiments have also been made to investigate the effect of small amounts of oxygen on the variation of internal friction with temperature for copper. EXPERIMENTS described in this paper were designed to investigate the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity, using the internal friction method developed by Kel for measuring grain boundary viscosity. It was considered desirable to make the system under investigation as simple as possible by making experiments on a comprehensive series of binary alloys of copper with the elements immediately following it in the periodic table, i.e., zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic. These elements are within the range of favorable size factor for solution in copper, and the systems have been extensively investigated by Hume-Rothery and his co-workers." Later, in order to study the effect of the relative size of the solvent and solute atoms, experiments were made on a series of Cu-Si alloys, since the apparent atomic diameter of silicon when in solution in copper—the diameter necessary to assign to the solute atoms to account for the lattice constant of the solid solutiona—is almost the same as that of the solvent atoms. Preliminary experiments were made to measure the variation of internal friction with temperature for pure copper. Ke made some experiments on copper," but found that the curves obtained were not reproducible in consecutive experiments. The copper was maintained in an argon atmosphere during the experiments but, although he took precautions to exclude oxygen, Ke came to the conclusion that the precautions were not entirely satisfactory, and that the lack of reproducibility must be due to absorption of oxygen by the copper. Experiments have therefore been made to investigate the effect of small amounts of oxygen on the variation of internal friction with temperature for copper. Previous Work Ke made extensive experiments on high purity aluminum and was able to show that the grain boundaries behave viscously at high temperatures. He found that the relative rate of movement of the grains could be expressed as Where v is the velocity of slip, A is the constant, u is the shear stress, H is the activation energy, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. By assuming that the boundary layer was one atom thick, he obtained a value for the viscosity which, when extrapolated to the melting point, gave good agreement with the viscosity of the liquid metal at the melting point. Ke also made experiments on other high purity and commercial purity metals:, and on some alloys." " He came to the conclusion2 that the activation energy for grain boundary slip was the same as for self or volume diffusion and for steady state creep in single crystals. The following is a brief note on the various countries: GREAT BRITAIN The United Kingdom is a very small producer of petroleum, practically the whole output being derived from the oil-shale deposits of the Lothians of Scotland. The crude oil produced by distillation of shale in 1922 amounted to 180,000 tons, and the estimated production for 1923 is 207,000 tons. Because of the recent- decline in the market value of petroleum products, the production of oil, from shale can no longer be regarded as remunerative, and the future outlook for the industry is serious unless prices recover. As regards naturally occurring petroleum, the drilling operations undertaken by the Government have now been closed down. Out of the eleven borings undertaken only one, that at Hardstoft in Derbyshire, proved to be a producing well; its output was 125 tons in 1922 and 136 tons in 1923.

With the sharp fall in commodity prices, the terms cost reduction and higher productivity have become subjects that are constantly addressed in the daily life of companies, since these factors represent a question of survival of the organizations. To achieve this, the search for continuous improvement of our processes in order to guarantee space in the market is a reality and necessity, so it is important that companies know their processes in detail and have the maturity to make decisions based on data and facts. Thus, this work aims to apply the Six Sigma methodology to investigate which are the variables that most influence the transportation process, carried out by large trucks, increasing their specific consumption of diesel, which is the second largest expense of a company. mining in the city of Mariana MG. The goal of the project was to reduce diesel consumption in the large transport fleet by 7.4%, from 0.32 l / t (average carried out from Feb / 16 to Jan / 17) to 0.30 by February 2018 , with an estimated gain of R $ 4.2 million. The results achieved exceeded the established target, reaching a 10% reduction in specific diesel consumption, totaling a projected real gain of R $ 6.4 Million, in addition to the reduction of 1,710.52 t of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Sol-gel processing is rapidly becoming an important process for producing such advanced materials as high activity catalysts, fiber optics and ceramic precursors. These materials can be tailor made with properties unique to sol particles as well as the gel aggregates by controlling production of the sol, the formation of the gel, and the removal of the interstitial fluids. This paper presents colloidal and kinetic principles of sol generation and gel formation. Hydrolysis of alkoxides provides the best means of controlling sol production and electrostatic stabilization enables the formation of the most homogeneous gels. Gelation occurs by hierarchial aggregation which produces inhomogeneities much larger than the sol particles. Diamond drilling through caving formations at depths greater than ZOO0 ft has long presented serious difficulty, generally solved either by casing or cementing. Casing is permitted only when the resulting smaller hole is acceptable, and cementing is frequently a problem at depth. A new method that injects cement under pressure at the desired location is an aid in diamond drilling deep holes. DRILLING through caving formations in diamond drill holes at depths greater than 2000 ft has long been a serious problem. These caving formations are normally passed only by casing the hole or by cementing the hole. Casing the hole is possible only when a resulting smaller hole is acceptable. In as much as only a limited number of reductions are economically practical, cementing is frequently considered the only method suitable for solving these problems. Cementing either by pumping a slurry into the hole or by dropping cylinders containing cement has proved satisfactory on holes under 2000 ft. In holes substantially deeper than 2000 ft these methods are not satisfactory, since during the pump- ing process cement separates out, whereas cylinders usually break before the bottom of the hole is reached. A new procedure, the injector method, apparently solves these problems.* With this method, cement is lowered in the hole in a cylinder, the cement being
