A lança de injeção de carvão pulverizado (PCI) é um método consolidado na indústria siderúrgica, que possibilita a redução do consumo de carvão vegetal ou de coque de carvão metalúrgico enfornado, além do ganho de produtividade. A seleção de materiais adequados para a lança de injeção é de suma importância para agregar ainda mais valor ao método. A finalidade deste trabalho é nortear a seleção das ligas aplicadas em alta temperatura, visando o melhor custo benefício, por meio das análises da resistência à corrosão, fluência e estabilidade estrutural. Foram realizados testes em uma usina siderúrgica chinesa com as ligas Sandvik 253 MA™ (UNS S30815) e UNS S32109. A experiência demonstrou como as siderúrgicas podem obter ganhos com a seleção adequada da liga. O custo-benefício do 253MA que é ligado ao Cério, Silício e Nitrogênio, mostra-se como uma ótima alternativa para o processo de injeção de carvão, devido a sua alta resistência à oxidação, à fluência e à erosão. Outras ligas como UNS S30403, UNS S31009 e UNS N08810, que são muito utilizadas em alta temperatura nas indústrias em geral, também foram analisadas como comparativo.

After more than 93% of the uranium is extracted from Elliot Lake uranium ores by a sulphuric acid leaching process, the leach residue (tailings) contains small amounts of uranium and radioactive isotopes, particularly radium-226, which is the most serious health hazard. Heavy metal components and pyrite are also present, along with the gangue minerals. Currently, over /000 acres of the Elliot Lake area are covered with these tailings, which contain over five million tons of pyrite. Because of constant oxidation of the pyrite by bacteria (thiobacillus) and the presence of moisture, pyrite slowly generates sulphuric acid, which steadily leaches the metal-bearing constituents from the tailings. The seepage-flows of the dissolved contaminants, although often quite low in volume, have an environmental impact on the Elliot Lake area. Although these seepages are treated and most of the contaminants removed and impounded, a small amount of the radioactive contaminants reaches Lake Huron via the Serpent River. This paper describes a flotation approach for treatment of the Elliot Lake uranium tailings to produce new, decontaminated tailings practically free of pyrite, with radium, thorium and uranium contents considerably reduced. The decontaminated tailing produced, which comprises about 75% by weight of the current uranium tailings, appears to be suitable for mine backfill. Because mine backfilling normally uses about 50% of the plant tailings, the surface storage of about half of the uranium tailings, therefore, would be eliminated by this process. Mine backfilling would also increase the mine production and thus enlarge the over-all uranium resources due to recovery of the ore from pillars. The pyrite concentrate produced from the current uranium tailings would be suitable for sulphuric acid production. The possibility of uranium recovery, and disposal of radium and thorium from the concentrates produced, is now being studied at CANMET.

The micrographic analysis of silicon steels is possible if a dilute solution of nitric acid and methyl alcohol in nitrobenzol is used. The action of this reagent differs from that of sodium picrate in that there is no persistent deep-seated staining and the solution is used cold. THE technical difficulties hampering the metallographic analysis of silicon steels are chiefly the result of the extreme corrodibility of these alloys. The addition of silicon to iron in increasing quantities, up to about 6 per cent., rapidly increases the susceptibility of the alloy to chemical attack, not only in acid solution, but in water. This renders the preparation of metallographic sections very difficult, because of a non-selective attack upon the finely polished surface by the water used as a lubricant in polishing. This water attack masks the true structural details revealed by suitable etching reagents. It is thus necessary to use alcohol as a polishing lubricant in the last stages of preparation and to avoid all etching reagents having an aqueous base. A specific reagent for the identification of iron carbide in ferrous alloys, and the one hitherto used almost exclusively by metallurgists, is an alkaline aqueous solution of sodium picrate, which stains this constituent selectively. Its application to silicon steels has not proved successful, as its distinctive selective action is more or less completely hidden by the general attack of the aqueous solvent on the silico-ferrite, greatly accentuated by the fact that this reagent must be used at its boiling temperature (105° C.). Thus, a powerful metallographic aid to the study of the higher silicon alloys, such as transformer steels, is lost. A new reagent has been developed for the purpose of overcoming this difficulty. It is with some hesitation that the list of etching reagents, already overburdened, is increased, but the properties of this new reagent are advantageous in several ways and a definite field for it may be found in the metallography of ferrous alloys.

Actual field data from several wells are used to illustrate the application of the method of determining the average density of the fluid column in a flowing oil well in the Yates field, Pecos County, Texas. The depths of the wells in the Yates field vary from 900 to 1700 ft., depending on surface elevation and the location of the wells on structure. Production rates over 8000 bbl. per hour have been determined and many wells are capable of producing 2000 bbl. hourly. Gas-oil ratios are usually below 400 cu. ft. per barrel, but a few wells high on structure have produced over 3000 cu. ft. per barrel. Incidentally, tubing wells has cut these high ratios to as low as 400 cu. ft.' By common agreement of the operators all wells making ratios over 400 cu. ft. will be tubed. Daily production of the field is prorated to 110,000 bbl. from an open-flow potential of 5,000,000 bbl. based on hourly open-flow gages.

Mine production blasting is a process of destruction of rock masses in order that ore may be extracted. Many open pit operations are faced with the apparently conflicting requirements of providing large quantities of fragmented rock for the processing plant and of minimizing the damage inflicted upon the surrounding pit slopes. A reasonable compromise between these two conflicting demands may often be found by means of simple engineering of production blasts. Many operations tend to rely too heavily upon traditional wall control techniques to alleviate a problem already created by the production blasts. Various production trends including use of larger blastholes and patterns have tended to aggravate the situation. These practices only serve to emphasize the need for engineered improvements. Central to blasting engineering is the process of systematic trial and evaluation. Changes to the blasting system should be made singly, starting with the simplest. This paper discusses simple changes involving drill pattern control, effective use of blastholes and explosives, adequate delaying including use of down-the-hole sequential techniques, effective utilization of free faces, and avoidance of "choked" situations. By directing explosive effort where it is needed, such changes generally result in a significant improvement of slope conditions and of production blasting cost and performance.

The Cadjebut Mine is located 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing. Cadjebut is owned 58 per cent by BHP Minerals and 42 per cent by Billiton Australia. Cadjebut is a 'Mississippi Valley Type' (MVT) deposit. Minerals present are sphalerite, galena and marcasite in a sedimentary host of dolomite and siltstone. The ore contains few deleterious impurities and no silver. The mill was commissioned in the first half of 1988 at a rate of 320 000 tonnes per annum. An expansion in the latter half of 1989 has since increased production to 550 000 tonnes per annum. The initial geological resource at the commencement of mining was 3.8 million tonnes at 13.5 per cent Zn and 4.4 per cent Pb. There is sufficient ore left to sustain operations to 1995 at a grade of 11.2 per cent Zn and 3.9 per cent Pb. The ore from underground is stockpiled on the surface via a drift conveyor and from the stockpile is fed into a grinding circuit consisting of a SAG and ball mill. Cyclone overflow at a Pgp of 90 pm gravitates to the flotation circuit. Lead and zinc are sequentially floated to produce an 80 per cent Pb grade at 90 per cent recovery and a 61 - 62 per cent Zn grade at 96 per cent recovery. The concentrates are thickened and filtered before being trucked to the port of Wyndham 600 km away. From Wyndham the concentrates are shipped to smelters in Asia, Europe and Australia.

The Alligator Ridge gold deposits are located in northwest White Pine County at the southwest end of Alligator Ridge. Alligator Ridge is on the west side of Long Valley in the range of hills that separates Long and Newark valleys. The nearest population center is Ely, about 113 km (70 miles) to the southeast. Access to the Alligator Ridge gold mine from Ely is via US Highway 50 and the Long Valley Ruby Marsh Road. The latitude and longitude is approximately 39° 45' north and 116° 30' west. The Alligator Ridge gold deposits occur in the lower 61 m (200 ft) of the Mississippian-Devonian Pilot Shale formation, a laminated calcareous carbonaceous siltstone. The gold deposits contain carbonaceous, oxide, and jasperoid type gold ore. For more details on the geologic features of the deposits, see Schull, Sutherland, and Ilchik (in press). The discovery story of Alligator Ridge began in the spring of 1976 when the areas mapped as jasperoid on the 1:250,000 scale geologic map of White Pine County (Hose and Blake, 1976) were examined and sampled. Seventeen samples, about 23 kg (50 lb), were collected from an area about 0.65 km2 (0.25 sq mile). Of these 17 samples 10 reported atomic absorption values of less than 0. 1 ppm Au and 7 reported values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm Au range. In June of 1976 20 lode claims were staked to claim the area of the rock chip sampling. The claims' end and side center lines were used as a grid for soil sampling. Sample stations were 91 m (300 ft) apart and sample lines were 229 m (750 ft) apart. The samples were sieved to - 180 µm (- 80 mesh). Out of 99 soil samples, seven samples reported Au values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm range. Of the seven auriferous samples, five were located over the jasperoid outcrops previously sampled; one over unmineralized Pilot Shale a few hundred m (ft) downslope from some Au-bearing jasperoid; and one from a 15 x 15 m (50 x 50 ft) talus outcrop area of hitherto unnoticed mineralized Pilot Shale. Subsequent sampling, mapping and drilling would show that this 15 X 15 m (50 x 50 ft) outcrop area was the top of the Vantage 1 ore body, about 1.27 Mt (1,400,000 st) of over 3 g/0.9 t (0.11 oz/st) Au. Late in the summer of 1976 about 30 more 1.4 to 2.2 kg (3 to 5 lb) rock chip samples were collected in the course of preliminary geologic mapping. This mapping and sampling showed that the gold-bearing jasperoids occurred at the contact between the Pilot Shale and the underlying Devils Gate Limestone. Rock chip samples of 0.1 ppm Au or greater were restricted to the jasperoids and the mineralized outcrop area of Pilot Shale located by the soil sample survey. Rock chip samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale were in the 3 to 5 ppm Au range. Activity resumed in the summer of 1977 with a more detailed soil geochemical survey. The jasperoid areas were defined as large geochemical gold anomalies of values greater than 0.1 ppm and locally greater than 0.2 ppm Au. Soil samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale outlined a greater than 0.1 ppm gold anomaly 61 x 152 m (200 x 500 ft) in size. Further geologic mapping showed that elsewhere, even where bleached and silicified, the Pilot Shale areas were geochemically very low in gold (less than 0.1 ppm Au). In November, 1977 twelve rotary percussion drill holes were drilled to test the gold-bearing jasperoid areas and the mineralized Pilot Shale area. Drilling of the jasperoid areas showed that the jasperoids gave way at shallow depths [less than 24 m (80 ft)] to unmineralized unaltered Devils Gate Limestone. lbis new concept in geology is introduced by a reinteipretation of the Archaean stratigraphy of the greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia. Evidence is presented to show that the recorded Archaean succession of the Eastern Goldfields Province is composed of two distinct groups of mafic/ultrarnafic and felsic igneous rocks which, together with sediments, form alternating sequences represented by Cycles 1 to 4; Cycle 5 consists entirely of sediments. Recorded stratigraphy for the Murchison and corre1atives of the Southern Cross Subprovinces conform to this pattern. The five basic components are referred to as Unit 1 to Unit 5. A major erosional unconformity between Units 3 and 4 extending across the Craton is identified as a locus of potential major gold occurrence, including fossil placers, where suitable structural situations exist; Units 1 and 3 are identified as potential hosts of gold and nickel deposits; Units 2 and 4 for gold and base metals.

It has been repeatedly questioned whether estimates of oil reserves are of any practical value, as the greater number of such calculations previously made have subsequently been proved to be grossly inaccurate. But even admitting partial justification for such statements, it must be evident that some idea, however approximate, of the available reserves of essential minerals—petroleum included—is of vital importance in mapping their development and the future trend of the related industries, particularly if it is kept constantly in mind that these estimates are not only never intended as a final word but must continually be subject to revision in accordance with the changes in their component factors. The value of these estimates, therefore, hinges on the clear understanding of what is meant by reserves and that the figures can only apply within the limited time when the controlling factors remain unchanged. It should be understood, further, that while estimates of possible and probable oil deposits are as a rule but idle conjectures, appraisals of proven oil reserves can undoubtedly be made with an ever-increasing degree of accuracy. And it is with this in mind that in the present study the endeavor has been to estimate only the world's proven oil reserves and to leave out of consideration the questionable volume of the probable and possible oil reserves. Such a survey presupposes further a clear distinction between the known amount of oil underground in proven fields at any one time, and the proven reserves: the portion that can be economically brought to the surface and made available for utilization. Only a fraction of the petroleum stored underground in proven fields— usually associated with natural gas—is or can be economically brought to the surface, and not all of the oik brought to the surface is economically utilized; also, although practically all the natural gas can be economically recovered and utilized, in actual practice a large part of the total volume that reaches the mouth of the well is wantonly blown into the air and wasted. It is thus estimated that in the United States only some 25 per cent of the petroleum stored underground in proven fields is actually brought to the surface; and in actual practice close to 25 per cent of the total gas produced is now absolutely wasted. A geostatistical study was made of diamond drill hole intersections within 18CC stope block at the C.S.A. Mine, Cobar, N.S.W. The stope block is located in 18CC orebody which is a massive sulphide - multiple vein, Copper-Zinc type, lacking clear definition on gangue mineralogy, base-metal assays and total sulphide considerations. Of the variograms constructed for inter- section width and copper, lead and zinc grades and accumulations, only zinc displayed behaviour amenable to model fitting and kriging procedures. Zinc grades were calcu- lated for sub-blocks comprising the total stope block and comparison with equivalent grades determined by traditional methods showed them to be generally less extreme in the highest and lowest grade sub-blocks. The total-block grades derived by the two methods were almost the same. It is suggested that the failure of copper to show variogram continuity might reflect the difficulty in defining the actual 18CC orebody, a proposition which is supported by the poor continuity in the variogram of horizontal width. In the case of lead the poor continuity may be due to the frequent manner of occurrence of galena as coarse grained patches of limited extent. The results of the study, did not provide a convincing reason to depart from the traditi- onal methods of grade estimation at the C.S.A. Mine.

"The Detour Lake Mine is located in northeastern, Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane. The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 60,000 mtpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill. This paper will highlight the impact of a pre-detox thickener on the cyanide consumption in a gold leach/CIP circuit. While the pre-detox thickener was built with the intention to reduce the cyanide consumption, the opposite effect was observed when the thickener was put temporarily offline. It will show how the re-circulation of a dilute stream of cyanide into the grinding circuit, increases the overall slurry temperature and by the same effect, increases the dissolved copper concentration in the leaching circuit which subsequently increases the cyanide consumption.INTRODUCTION The processing plant is using a conventional gravity, cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp processing facility currently operating at approximately 60,000 mtpd. The comminution process is based on two parallel SABC lines, each fed from an individual reclaim tunnel. Cyclone overflow from the two ball mill circuits is directed to the pre-leach thickener. The thickener underflow is distributed to two (4) parallel leach trains of 5 tanks each, each leach train providing 29 hours of leaching retention time. After leaching, the gold in solution is recovered in a carrousel CIP circuit consisting of two (2) parallel leach trains. Tails from each CIP circuit are combined and sent to a pre-detox thickener to recover as much cyanide solution as is economically practical before being diluted and fed to a cyanide destruction system. The detoxified tailings are sent to the Tailing Management Area (TMA) for settling and retention. The excess water from the TMA is reclaimed and recycled back to the processing plant. The pre-detox thickener is designed to thicken the leach tails slurry to 64% solids with the overflow being recycled to the grinding circuit. It is estimated that the pre-detox thickener will recover 60% of the cyanide in the CIP discharge solution. It is also designed to reduce the SO2 consumption by diluting the thickener U/F to 50% solid using the tailing pond reclaim water which has very little cyanide content."

The Bureau of Mines smelted samples of chromite ore and concentrate from the General Services Administration (GSA) purchasing depot at Grants Pass, Oreg., in a submerged-arc furnace to establish smelting conditions and the energy requirement to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Raw material, in the form of ore, flux, and reductant, and electrical energy are available on the Pacific coast to smelt the chromite. The concentrate can be smelted without prior agglomeration by employing hogged wood (wood chips) as a major portion of the reductant. The energy requirement is relatively low, about 3,960 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. The ferrochromium produced will contain about 60 percent chromium. In addition to the smelting data, a statistical summary of the grade and amount of chromite purchased during the stockpile program and estimated chromite reserves and production volume are given. It is estimated that 632,000 tons of Cr203 contained in chromite of all grades is available in the western coastal States. Of this total there appears to be sufficient metallurgical-grade and beneficiable ore to sustain a smelting operation for 25 years at a consuming rate of 25,000 tons a year, utilizing material comparable to that delivered to the Government stockpile.

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) IN a former paper* attention was directed to the various firms of pumping machines employed for permanent work in mining and metallurgical processes. The following is simply a collection of memoranda of work done of a temporary character, and is presented by way of comparison with other work of similar nature. In close proximity to the charcoal furnace at Pine Grove, Cumberland County, Pa., is a large deposit of superior hematite iron ore, which has been worked for a number of years, and from which many thousand tons of ore have been taken by open pit workings. In July, 1874, the furnace was blown out and operations at the bank suspended, the machinery for draining being removed except a plunger pump, 18 inches in diameter and 66 inches stroke, operated by a steam-engine by means of rods. The pit was allowed to fill with water, and no steps towards its reclamation were taken until November, 1877. At that time the pit was a pond of water at the base of the mountain, having an area of about four acres and a depth of seventy feet. As the pumps, rods, etc., had been submerged for over three years, and partially buried by the mud washed down from the banks, and as it was determined to change the location of the pump for future operations and drive it by water-power, a temporary pumping apparatus was determined upon for reclaiming the pit and keeping it drained until the permanent arrangements could be completed. By opening an old adit about 10 feet of the water was removed, and the area decreased to three acres. The inflow of springs was found to be 250 gallons per minute, and the amount of water contained in the pit was computed to be 45,000,000 gallons. As the inflow would undoubtedly increase while the water sank in the pit, provision was made for removing at least 60,000,000 gallons, at the rate of 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 gallons per day. The company determined to employ a Heald and Cisco centrifugal pump driven by an oscillating engine by means of a belt. It is not possible to accurately predict water flow into rock tunnels during construction, because all of the relevant factors cannot be accurately determined ahead of time. But an estimate is needed, because water inflow can be a major problem during construction, hence also a major concern for project design. There currently is no simple, generally accepted method of estimating inflow. This paper describes a semi-empirical method for estimating possible water inflow based on borehole water pressure test results, using correlations from previous tunnel experience. The method provides an estimate of percentages of tunnel length which will experience different intensities of long term steady state inflow, and provides an estimate of possible initial heading inflow. The method is applicable for distributed sources of water inflow due to rock mass features such as systems of joints and bedding planes, and accounts for different boundary conditions of water head and recharge. The metric system flow units used in this paper are liters per minute (L/min) and liters/minute/meter of tunnel (L/min/m), to be compatible with rock mass classification systems commonly used today.

Identified potential resources of lead and zinc are lower, relative to reserves, than the same ratio for other metals, Either there is little material below present grades or, if it exists, there are no data on it. The author examines both these factors in detail, and also introduces a third possibility. In their 1961 monograph, The Future Supply of the Major Metals, Bruce Netschert and Hans Landsberg noted that identified potential resources (that is, known but submarginal resources) of lead and zinc were much lower relative to reserves (that is, known and supermarginal resources) than was the same ratio for other metals.' Put another way, it seemed that for such metals as iron, manganese, copper, and aluminum, slightly more favorable economic conditions or modest advances in technology would greatly increase reserves by permitting the exploitation of vast quantities of leaner or deeper or otherwise less valuable mineral deposits. But for lead and zinc, Netschert and Landsberg concluded that either: "(1) there is relatively little material below present cutoff grades; [or] (2) such material exists, but for some reason there are no data.'12 This situation, which they called "the lead-zinc anomaly'' has been subsequently discussed by other authors. The purpose of this paper is to carry the discussion further by examining the evidence in favor of (1) and (2) and by advancing a third alternative. There are at least two reasons for devoting time to the lead-zinc anomaly. First, while it is unlikely that we shall have to turn to alternative lead or zinc resources in the near or middle-term future, the longer run resource picture for the two metals is not so certain.3 Both within the United States and for the world as a whole, new discoveries will have to come at a fair pace to keep up with growing rates of consumption. Thus, it is important to see whether there exist lower grade or nonconventional potential sources of two such useful metals that we could turn to at some time in the future. The second reason for studying the lead-zinc anomaly is also related to resource adequacy, but is of more general significance. Depending upon whether the anomaly is technologic, geochemical, spatial, or temporal in origin, we shall be able to draw some conclusions about the resource picture for other metals. Can we expect the apparent pattern of lead-zinc resources to be repeated? If so, will technologic advances in either exploration methods or mineral processing be able to alter the pattern? Or is the pattern unalterably set by geochemical distribution? Most important, are metals characterized by what seems to be an anomaly, different in any way from metals for which low-grade or nonconventional sources already have come to be exploited, as the porphyry deposits have for copper. In sum, investigation of the lead-zinc anomaly represents a case study combining both physical and economic aspects that may open up a neglected area in evaluating mineral resource adequacy. WHAT IS THE LEALLZINC ANOMALY? There are two dimensions to evaluations of the potential of any mineral resource? The first involves the degree of certainty that we ascribe to the estimate: how much do we know about the size of the resource as a result of geological mapping, exploration, and mine development? This dimension is expressed by the terms measured, indicated, and inferred reserves (and, if you wish, 'undiscovered reserves'), all of which terms carry with them the implication of exploitability under current cost-price conditions. The other dimension to evaluations of a mineral resource involves the economic limits of the estimate: how will the size of the resource vary with different (usually more favorable) cost-price conditions? (This economic dimension should be understood broadly to include all factors bearing on the cost-price relationship. In this sense it subsumes technology because any resource is exploitable at some cost; the role of technology is to bring cost down.) The latter dimension is expressed in the terms potential or sub-marginal 'ore,' and is logically quite independent of the former. For example, we have relatively good measurements of the tonnage of manganese in low-grade deposits in this country, though they are too lean to be considered reserves; on the other hand, we are much less certain of our measurements of new lead and zinc deposits in Missouri, though there is no question but that there is a sizable reserve. Thus, it may be uncommon but is not a contradiction to talk of measured submarginal ore or inferred potential ore.

NATURAL carbon dioxide has recently been exploited in the United States in consequence of oil and gas developments in the Western States and the growing demand by transcontinental and transoceanic shippers for solid carbon dioxide. The discovery by drilling of commercial deposits resulted in consideration of its geographic and geologic distribution and occurrence. Its wide distribution in nature is evidenced by its occurrence in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The question of origin of carbon dioxide involves consideration of theories similar to those concerning natural hydrocarbons, although available evidence favors an inorganic rather than an organic source. Areas favorable to development of commercial production appear to be those in proximity to igneous rocks or in the vicinity of decadent volcanic activity, where, it has long been known, the gas is evolved either free or dissolved in the waters of fumaroles, geysers or mud pots. Structure contour maps are presented showing the Wagon Mound anticline in New Mexico and the Farnham anticline, Utah. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the producing formation is recommended, The Farnham anticline is used as an example and cornputationa are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the structure. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate. INTRODUCTION Carbon dioxide, in liquid and solid form, has found a wide variety of uses other than its primary application in carbonating beverages. It is now used in more than 40 different ways, ranging from cooling or freezing to use in gas or liquid form for mechanical purposes, chemical industry, explosive, fire extinction, and tire manufacturing. Undoubtedly the chief supply of carbon dioxide is obtained from industrial plants or artificial sources and until recently natural deposits of the gas have received little consideration. Neste trabalho foi estudada a corrosão dos aços API 5L B e X52MS em soluções ácidas descritas nas normas NACE TM0284 e TM0177. A susceptibilidade ao trincamento induzido pelo hidrogênio (HIC) foi determinada em cada meio, os produtos de corrosão foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectrometria de energia dispersiva de raios-X e, posteriormente identificados por difratometria de raios-X. Conclui-se que o pH afeta diretamente a solubilidade dos produtos de corrosão e a permeação de hidrogênio. Na solução 177-A, ambos os aços sofreram corrosão generalizada, enquanto que na solução 177-B foi evidenciada a presença de um filme fino descontinuo. Somente o API 5L B não passou no teste de HIC. Na solução 284-B de maior pH, os aços apresentaram filmes espessos e o trincamento pelo hidrogênio não foi observado.

THE study that is presented here was undertaken in order to condense information concerning comminution, and covering a great variety of conditions, into one or several rules which would be of use in the development of a systematic theory as well as in many directly practical ways. As the result of this work, the following conclusions appear justified 1. Rocks may be classified, from the point of view of comminution, into two general classes which are (a) structurally homogeneous, and (b) structurally heterogenous. Structurally homogeneous rocks are those in which fracture takes place through grains and grain boundaries alike; heterogeneous rocks are those in which fracture passes in preference through grain boundaries. 2. If a sized product composed of structurally homogeneous rock grains is crushed, a product results in which the relation between the percentage weight of grains of various sizes and these sizes themselves follows a definite law. This is not true of structurally heterogeneous rocks. 3. Ball milling with structurally homogeneous rocks, and under certain conditions, presents exceptions to this rule. 4. In ball milling with structurally homogeneous rocks, there exists a critical ratio of size of feed to size of balls, above which the machine operates essentially by surface wear, and below which it operates essentially by breaking across the body of the particle. 5. In ball milling, with structurally homogeneous rocks, and when the size of feed grains exceeds the critical size, the particles worn off are of a, substantially definite size which depends upon the ball size 6. In the case of a typical heterogeneous rock, such as Manhattan schist, particles are crushed in such a way that there is a greater proportion of grains of the size that is the average grain-size of the rock than there would be in that range of size with a structurally homogeneous rock. This has been found to be true with-all the crushers tested. 7. Different methods of crushing produce grains of different shapes.

THE waters of many oil fields have been regarded as buried sea water which has been retained in the sediments since the time of their deposition. The preservation of connate water through geological time has seemed improbable to only a few geologists, but there is room for doubt that buried sea water could remain in the strata during their periods of deformation and during the many subsequent epochs of. the circulation of meteoric ground-water. Some have even suggested that the calcium chloride water in the deep mines of the Lake Superior region is ancient sea water buried in the Algonkian lavas, but it is hard to understand how such water could be derived from the highly sodic and sulphatic water of the sea. It would seem more plausible to connect the calcium chloride with the highly calcic magmas of the greenstones in which it is found. Chemical analyses of waters associated with oil differ widely from the composition of sea water, requiring extensive alteration of the latter, if the former is truly its derivative. The first notable difference is the general absence of sulphates from oil-field waters, but this has been explained satisfactorily through reduction by hydrocarbons and organic matter. Oil reduces sulphates with the production of hydrogen sulphide (or sulphur), water, and carbonates (or carbon dioxide). The second striking difference is in the high ratio of chlorine to sodium. An examination of the analyses of chloride waters from oil fields shows that they contain a large relative excess of chlorine over that in sea water. Moreover, there is difficulty in finding chemical reactions that are probable in nature, by which sea water could be converted into anything like the chloride waters of oil fields. In the latter a large part of the chlorine occurs as calcium acid magnesium chloride. This condition might be produced by the removal of sodium carbonate, which; however, cannot be precipitated in the presence of much calcium or, magnesium.
