PORE formation during solidification has recently been studied theoretically by Piwonka and Flemings.1 For the ordinary conditions of cellular solidification, these authors state that there is a difficulty in explaining the formation of pores. The difficulty arises because the conditions necessary for pore formation are not those obtained during cellular growth. Therefore Piwonka and Flemings1 had to examine various unusual possibilities in order to explain the apparent presence of pores in a cellular substructure of aluminum, taken from Doherty.2 For aluminum, Doherty and Davis3 have developed a pitting technique to reveal substructure, which depends upon the condensation of vacancies from supersaturated solution after quenching. This technique as further developed4 was used to study solidification substructures. In the case of striations, delineation of the substructure is produced by the absence of surface pitting after quenching: in the vicinity of the striations the dislocations which constitute this substructure are sinks for vacancies. In the case of the cellular substructure the experimentally observed effect is the same. However, in this latter case Doherty and Davis4 suggested that micropores associated with the cellular substructure were the agent responsible for providing sinks for vacancies. This interpretation seemed necessary for the cellular substructure because no misorientation arising from a dislocation array could be observed. The orebodies of the Hecla mine are from 3 to 40 ft. wide, dip not less than 70°, and in most cases are nearly vertical. The Hecla and Intermediate orebodies are generally associated with a lamprophyric dike, usually about 2 ft. wide, but which attains a maximum width of 7 ft. The ore appears on either or both sides of the dike. The country rock is Burke quartzite with no definite walls and a tendency for nearly horizontal, but irregular, quartz stringers to run from the lode into the walls. This latter condition prevails almost entirely in the hanging wall, causing a natural tendency for portions of the wall to "offset" and resulting in an extremely heavy side pressure. The fact that there are no definite walls causes a great variation in the width of the stopes, as stringers will run into the walls for irregular distances. The ore occurs as galena in varying widths and grades. It is often necessary to mine a face having a " horse"' of waste between two stringers of ore. This block of waste might be 6 or 7 ft. wide but with the Hecla method it is necessary to mine the entire face. In this case an effort is made only to shatter the waste, allowing for easy sorting underground. The Hecla mine requires a flexible system allowing for the extraction of ore from varying widths, with the necessity of close filling to give the needed protection from side weight. About 15' per cent. of the material broken in the face is sorted as waste, either at the face of stope, or in the sorting plant. Shafts, Drifts and Crosscuts The outside dimensions of the shaft are 19 ft. 4 in. by 7 ft. 2 in. The shaft consists of three working compartments, two for the hoisting of ore and one for auxiliary work. The working compartments are 5 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 4 in. inside measurement. The rest of the shaft is used for pump column, electric cables, and ladderway. (See Fig. 6 for framing of timbers.) The shaft is about 700 It. from the orebody for topographical reasons. Solid formation was not reached in shaft for 80 ft. Timbers in this section became alternately wet and dry on account of seasonal changes

TRANSIENT potentials obtained in resistivity prospecting can be separated into two classes. The first is electromagnetic, has a comparatively short time constant, and increases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. These electromagnetic transient potentials, of which an excellent theoretical treatment is given by Yost: are the result of changes in the current and can be classed as differentiated signals. The second class is electrochemical, has a comparatively long time constant, and decreases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. The electrochemical signals are generated by the current flow itself and can be classed as integrated signals. The transient potentials due to electrochemical factors are the subject of this article. The phenomenon is referred to as induced polarization. Schlumberger" was the first worker to observe induced polarization, but he was unsuccessful in attempts to apply the principles of induced polarization in electrochemical prospecting. Other workers, notably Bleil; have studied polarization and in some cases pointed out its possibilities, but no theory has been presented that describes polarization and its time dependence adequately. It is the purpose of this discussion to present the essence of a theory to geo-physicists and to show that it leads to results consistent with experimental evidence. The theory on which this analysis is based has existed in electrochemical circles since 1910."

New York has a small but not insignificant place in the oil and natural gas industries of the United States. It has had a continuous record as an oil producer since 1872, with an aggregate yield of about 104,000,000 bbl. The reported output for 1935 was 4,237,000 bbl., a gain of more than 10 per cent for the year and a total that has been exceeded only in the early period of flush production half a century ago. The industry has been steadily building up since 1920 with the successful practice of the water drive, which has given a new lease of life to pools that had been practically drained of oil recoverable by pumping. An additional output of 2000 bbl. or more per acre is being procured by this method. Altogether the fields in New York State cover about 55,000 acres. Their limits are well defined and it is unlikely that they will be extended in the future, although there is some prospect of finding additional supplies by deeper drilling. The oil from New York is all classed as Pennsylvania grade, for which the recent price has been about $2.50 a barrel. It is refined at Olean, Wellsville and Bolivar, in the oil district, and partly in Pennsylvania refineries. Exploration for natural gas, outside of the established districts, was considerable during the year. Altogether 59 wells were drilled, distributed over 13 counties, of which 33 were listed as producers and 26 were dry. At the close of the year, 13 wells were in process of drilling. The 33 producing wells had a combined estimated flow of 278 million cubic feet per day. The best results were obtained from exploration in Allegany County, where out of eight wells drilled to the Oriskany sandstone five were successful and showed a combined open-flow capacity of 107 million cubic feet. The Oriskany sandstone was encountered at a depth of 4500 to 4900 ft. In Steuben County, next east of Allegany County, two out of seven wells to the Oriskany proved productive, and one of these, in the town of Greenwood, on the Watkins structure, was probably the largest that has so far been opened in the state, with a reported yield of 35 million a day. The Louisiana Continental Shelf is a submarine area extending offshore as much as one hundred miles. The Gulf bottom in this region varies considerably in extent, profile and composition and consists largely of sedimentary deposits, predominantly those of the Mississippi River. It is very young in a geological sense. Up to the present time few major structures have been erected offshore in the Gulf and no comprehensive preliminary tests have been carried out. Results of pile driving tests are of little value as actual bearing capacities far exceed the dynamic resistance to driving as measured by conventional formulas. Soils encountered are, with few exceptions, cohesive and piling consequently develop their supporting power through surface friction. Because of the time required and relatively high costs, no complete load tests have been made. The results of those tests which have been made, and information obtained from pulling piling in one structure, indicate that design loadings could be considerably increased, and it is contended that comprehensive preliminary investigations including an actual load test, combined with borings and examination of materials encountered by competent soil experts, would effect economies in design far in excess of their cost. The Louisiana Continental Shelf—General The Louisiana . . . continental shelf is a submarine area which extends seaward for as great a distance as one hundred miles off the present shoreline. The Gulf bottom in this region is characterized by low slopes and its outer margin is outlined by the fifty fathom (300 ft.) contour. South of the margin of the shelf the slopes steepen abruptly in the continental slope zone and plunge into the deeps of the Gulf of Mexico.l The engineer who is called upon to design a structure on this shelf is concerned only with the uppermost portion to a depth generally not to exceed Ioo to 150 ft. This layer is very young in a geological sense, and it has the characteristics usually associated with infancy. A few of these are lack of strength, lack of uniformity, and high water content. It consists of the sedimentary deposits of the various rivers and streams entering the Gulf. These streams are all heavily burdened in quantities sufficient to fill the areas at their mouths, were it not for the fact that continual subsidence, equal or greater in amount and acting directly opposite, prevail over the sedimentary workings of the streams. This subsidence has been estimated by geologists to be at the rate of at least one foot per century. Influence of Mississippi River The Mississippi River, which has been the predominant factor in the formation of practically all the Louisiana continental shelf, is one of two rivers flowing into the Gulf that have been able to build protruding deltas. The Mississippi has done so because of its enormous size and load. It deposits sediments in amounts sufficient to replace and actually gain on the amount of subsidence.

"Geo-statistics was born from mining problems: grades not being what was expected; more tons of waste than expected; in other words, dilution. Geo-statisticians now claim to have solved many of these problems, but the solutions seem to have a hard time being picked up by practitionners. One of the reasons may be the jargon which geo-statisticians are using. The reason for jargon is that obtaining solutions required a strict formulation in a statistical framework. Practicing mining engineers and geologists are not used to such a framework, and they are not familiar with the jargon. In this paper, the authors re-examine dilution in operating mines and answer two extremely practical problems, using practical language as much as possible. Can dilution be reduced by improving the quality of blast hole samples? How many samples are needed to obtain a good ore-waste discrimination, i.e. to reduce dilution to acceptable levels? Citing real situations, this paper will try to show how fairly simple concepts can be used to answer both problems. It will try to present the solut ions using a minimum of jargon, even if the theoretical solution could be obtained in a few precisely worded paragraphs.The two problems considered are the following: the first one was encountered in the Panguna deposit of Bougainville Copper Limited, P.N .G., but it occurs in every open pit operation where selective mining is required. As the cut-off is lowered, more and more mining occurs in marginal areas. Grade control is mostly based on the grades obtained from blast holes, hence, it is essential that the quality of the blast hole samples be as good as possible in order to reduce dilution, waste being sent to the mill and ore being sent to the waste dump.The second example stemmed from the grade control technique used in many gold open-pit operations in Western Australia: channels are cut on lines 5 m apart and assays are taken every metre. The pattern in the same regardless of rock type, whether one is in the oxidized zone or not. The number of samples to be treated is enormous, hence, the question arises how to find an acceptable sampling grid, and whether changing it can reduce dilution at an acceptable cost.A solution will be given to each problem separately, although in fact it could be seen that the formal framework is the same in both situations."

The present paper describes a number of experiments with fine silver, coin silver, silver-cadmium oxide and silver-nickei-copper compacts, prepared by powder metallurgical methods. The test data are of a preliminary nature, since most of the work was exploratory. Fine Silver Eject of Compacting Pressure on Hardness and Density during Cold and Hot Pressing The cold-welding properties of silver have received considerable attention and the welding characteristics are functions of such variables as: cleanliness of metal particles (impurities and adsorbed gases), chemical nobility of particles, plasticity and hardness, particle assortment, particle shape, particle porosity, apparent density, temperature, pressure, time, recrystalliza-tion characteristics. Chemical nobility, plasticity and low temperature of recrystallization after work-hardening are responsible for the excellent low-temperature bonding properties of silver. Several series of compacts were pressed at pressures of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70 and 80 tons per square inch, at temperatures of 32°C. (room temperature), l00°, 2000, 300°, 400°, and 450°C. Silver powder of minus 325-mesh, produced by displacing silver from a nitrate solution by means of copper, was used. The density was calcuiated from accurately measured and weighed compacts. The hardness was measured on the Rockwell F scale. The investigation shows that an increase in pressure promotes a higher density and hardness regardless of pressing temperature, up to a temperature of 400° C. The pressure-density curves at various pressing temperatures are shown in Fig. I, the pressure-hardness curves at various pressing temperatures, in Fig. z. The greatest increase in both hardness and density was obtained in the pressure range of 5 to 20 tons per square inch. A compact from each series was annealed at 300°C. in air, for various lengths of time. The hardness values after annealing are shown in Table I. A minimum hardness was obtained after one hour of annealing. No change in density occurred during annealing. The maximum density was obtained at 80 tons per sq. in., and at this pressure the hardness is equal to that of hard-drawn wrought

Seattle’s Elliott Bay Seawall protects the 1½ miles of downtown waterfront between South Washington and Broad streets. The seawall supports the urban waterfront and infrastructure, including the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Alaskan Way, access to historic waterfront piers, and numerous essential buried utilities. Most of the original seawall was constructed between 1916 and 1936 over soft/loose non-engineered fill, estuary, and beach deposits. The majority of the original seawall was a pile-supported timber relieving platform that extended up to 60 feet behind the face of the wall (Figure 1). With maximum spacing between the timber piles of 3 to 5 feet, a virtual forest of timber piles were driven for the original wall.

Computational techniques in determining particle size distributions after blasting is getting wide acceptance. A well known approach to extract this kind of information from digital images is edge detection. The number of edge points on a given image increase proportional to the increase of the particles on the image. By selecting a conveniently smooth threshold, counting the signed edge pixels may be a suitable metric further used to quantify the number of particles in the image. Here we propose an image processing algorithm together with Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to efficiently count the rock particles with various sizes on a given surface. To determine a suitable approximation for a mapping between the number of edge pixels and the number of particles, ANFIS is a suitable tool. As a trainable classifier ANFIS proved itself as being better efficient approach than other well known multilayer perceptron classifiers. ANFIS is trained by using convenient training data pairs previously experienced from empirically counted sample images. When given a new image containing the particle information of selected surface, the hybrid neuro fuzzy image processing approach provides satisfying performance on counting the correct number of particles up to the given scale of sizes. In this paper an experimantal study for assessment of particle size using ANFIS is presented.

A column reactor was applied for leaching with simultaneous flotation a complex sulfide ore in ferric sulfate-solution under oxygen pressure. Elemental sulfur and the flotable, nonreacted sulfides were collected in the froth and separated from the insoluble, nonflotable gangue minerals and solid particles formed during pressure leaching. The two-stage laboratory unit, built from Corning-glass elements is described. Results of the continuous leaching/flotation experiments conducted under 20-40 psig of oxygen pressure are presented, as are supplementary batch leaching experiments with iron precipitation under 150 psig oxygen pressure. High zinc extraction to solution and near total accumulation of lead sulfate in the nonflotable fraction are easily attainable. Relatively poor flotation of pyrite is probably caused by the partial oxidation of its sulfidic sulfur to sulfate.

"This paper describes: how Falconbridge's fire protection system meets the needs of the Lockerby Mine; why the system was chosen over other alternatives; how it is unique, but can be applied to any underground situation; details of the system; how it was installed; the role of a fire protection company; and general considerations when choosing afire-suppresant system.IntroductionIn May 1981, after about three years of searching for the best fire protection system for the re-opened Lockerby nickel mine at Whitefish, near Sudbury, Ontario, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. installed an AFFF type of fire suppression system. It was designed and supplied by the Fire Protection Systems Division of Levitt -Safety Ltd.The system protects against loss of life, equipment and/or production, and it complies with legislation should fire occur in a fuel storage area and/or scooptram garage and service bay at any or all of the three levels near Shaft No.2.About 18 months after Levitt-Safety began working with Falconbridge, the system was designed and installed at a cost considerably less than that which would be incurred if fire damage caused the loss of two days of production.The fire protection system, which overcomes a limited water supply, is a self-contained balanced pressure proportioning system. It senses the flow and automatically determines the correct concentration of foam to water. It is triggered by a release mechanism which operates a bank of nitrogen cylinders, which in turn pressurize a pressure vessel to expel the foam concentrate and water from the tanks. This solution is piped to sprinkler heads in the specific area."

Active geothermal fields show many of the characteristics seen in hydrothermal ore deposits but there are important differences as well. There are, for example, many differences in geology and chemistry between individual geothermal fields, even some nearby, and these include variations in host rock types (volcanic, sedimentary, plutonic and metamorphic), structures controlling fluid flow (normal, lateral, and, rarely, reverse faulting occur) and hydrological setting (valleys to elevated terrain).

Nesta pesquisa, foi desenvolvido um material compósito com matriz poliéster, reforçadas com fibras de bambu e de sisal. As fibras de bambu foram extraídas do próprio campus da UFPA e as fibras de sisal obtidas no comércio de Belém. As fibras foram submetidas ao equipamento moinho granulador, com a finalidade de otimizar o corte das fibras, visto que, pelo processo manual gasta-se um certo tempo para obter uma quantidade necessária, para fabricação dos compósitos. E os comprimentos obtidos variaram entre 5 a 15 mm. Os compósitos foram produzidos utilizando-se o menor nível possível de processamento tecnológico nas etapas de fabricação. Foram fabricados 8 (oito) corpos de prova para fração mássica definida com a seguinte proporção 3,90%; a fabricação foi realizada por moldagem manual, usando resina poliéster insaturada com a proporção de agente de cura/resina de 0,33%. As fibras de sisal e bambu foram submetidas a ensaio de tração, determinação da massa especifica e avaliação microestrutural, por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV).

The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.

I have availed myself of the opportunity to prepare, and to give this talk because, as incumbent Chairman, I am directed by the Bylaws of the Council of Education to make an Annual Report of the Council activities which have transpired during the past year. In addition, and inasmuch as I have this captive audience, I am taking the liberty to express also some beliefs I hold about various other elements of Mineral Industry education. First, my report is that constructive progress has been achieved in the Council of Education during 1960-61. These advancements have been particularly notable through projects carried on by the Committee on Meetings and Programs, by the Student Chapters Committee, by the Accrediting Affairs Committee and by the Committee for Securing Better Representation of Mineral Industry Colleges. I believe each of these groups will report concerning details of their respective programs at the Business Meeting of the Council. On the other hand, not as much has been done in some areas of work as I had hoped would be the case when I took office as Chairman last February. Let me make clear that these delinquencies, for the most part, have resulted through my ineptness in handling of affairs; they are not caused by the failure to perform various assignments which I have given to council members.

Summarising a conference is never an easy task, but I will try to keep my comments brief and to the point. There are a number of lessons which we have learned from our deliberations together during these past three days, and I will try to give you my impressions of these lessons and of their practical implications in open pit mining. The first thing that has become increasingly obvious during these discussions is that it is no longer acceptable to offer an 'Act of God' as an excuse for a major slope or tailings dam failure. Disasters such as that at Aberfan in the United Kingdom have focussed the world's attention on the activities of the mining industry and the report of the commission set up to investigate the Aberfan disaster clearly showed that adequate knowledge was available and that failure to apply this knowledge did not qualify as an 'Act of God'. The courts and the world's press are certain to impose increasingly harsher penalties and criticism on those held responsible for major failures, particularly of tailings dams, in the future. One of the major problems in applying available knowledge to slope problems is that attempts to apply this knowledge are frequently left too late. To provide an engineering solution in the case of a slope in an advanced state of failure is an almost impossible task, and it is essential that those responsible for the stability of a slope must learn to recognise signs of distress at an early enough stage for effective remedial measures to be taken. As our ability to solve slope problems improves, the time at which slope stability problems are considered in a mining project must move forward to a stage at which these problems can be anticipated and dealt with before they arise. Conferences such as this are important in that they enable us to exchange ideas and advance our knowledge to a level at which such predictive engineering will be possible. It has been encouraging to hear of mining projects such as the Bougainville Copper operation where slope stability studies were carried out as part of the overall evaluation programme and it is hoped that this will become a more common procedure in the future. Providing a safe slope in an opencast mine obviously costs money, either in terms of the reduced ore to waste ratio given by flat slopes or because of the cost of stabilization techniques such as drainage or the use of rock anchors. An optimum slope design will provide maximum safety at minimum cost but achieving this optimum is not an easy task. Any one of us could design a slope which would be stable to the end of time, but it is probable that that slope would be so flat as to be totally uneconomic in most open pit mining situations. On the other hand, if the overall economics of a mining project are so critical as to require slope angles which the engineer responsible for these slopes considers to be unsafe, it is his duty to make us could design a slope which would be stable to the end of time, but it is probable that that slope would be so flat as to be totally uneconomic in most open pit mining situations. General The crushing of run-of-mine hard rock ores is the province of jaws and gyratory primary crushers described in the two preceding chapters of this section. Copper-gold ores have been technically difficult and uneconomical to process due to high consumptions of cyanide. Many copper oxide and sulphide minerals react with cyanide to form copper cyanide complexes, partly contributing to the high level of weak-acid dissociable cyanide in the tailings which is normally experienced during the processing of copper-gold ores. The cost for detoxification, if required for treating these tailings, would further inhibit the development of these copper-gold resources unless the cyanide used for leaching was recovered. Several technologies have been proposed to process copper-gold ores, aiming to recover copper as a co-product and cyanide for recycling in conjunction with the leaching process. A critical review of these processes reveals that a pre-concentration stage (solvent extraction or resin ion exchange) is required. Cyanide is recovered by the conventional Acidification-Volatilisation-Regeneration technique in most cases. A critical evaluation is also provided on technical aspects related to the use of Vitrokele Technology and a newly developed Elutech process in processing copper-gold ores, in particular with its application at May Day Mine.
