The Bulolo Graben represents an intra-arc rift formed by activa- tion of transfer structures in an extensional setting formed be- tween the eastern and western sectors of the New Guinea Origin. Crustal thinning has facilitated the emplacement of dacitic Edie porphyry intrusions, locally as flow dome complexes, phreatomagmatic (diatreme) breccias and the Bulolo ignimbrite/ agglomerate as an extrusive equivalent of the Edie Porphyry. Gold mineralization is localized along intra-graben structures, com- monly at the intersection with cross structures and occurs in sub- sidiary dilational fractures and not the localizing major structures. Gradations are apparent in the styles of mineralization according to the degree of erosion of the hydrothermal system. Hamata occurs as the deepest mineralization of the quartz-sul- phide style Wau, Hidden Valley, and Edie Creek are dominated by carbonate-base metal styles. Kerimenge grades from quartz sulphide through carbonate-base metal to epithermal mineraliza- tion, the latter style also being present in the periphery of Edie Creek. Here, pre-existing fractures of the Edie Creek Structural Corridor have been reactivated by movement on NS structures to form the ore-hosting dilatant lodes. Fluid flow may have been from the vicinity of the Nauti diatreme margin and along the vein System.

Project Hobson involves the replacement of an existing 90-year-old above-ground sewer that crosses Hobson Bay in Auckland, New Zealand, and which is nearing the end of its economic life, with a 3 km long, 3.7 m internal diameter segmentally-lined bored tunnel. The $118 M project will offer several benefits to the owner, Watercare Services Ltd, and the local community:provide capacity to meet projected growth in the region,virtually eliminate wastewater overflows into Hobson Bay and the Waitemata Harbour, andremove an obtrusive visual feature and open up the bay for recreational purposes. The geology in the region is a sedimentary formation, which has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20 km of the nearby city centre. The geology along the alignment is dominated by two palaeovalleys which have been infilled with a combination of marine alluvium and volcanic deposits. Watercare Services Limited has elected to manage and share tunnelling risk through, among other key measures, the implementation of a geotechnical baseline report (GBR); one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. This paper describes the general principles behind the use of a GBR, the development of the GBR used in Project Hobson and some lessons learnt.

NEVER before have so many men chosen the mineral technology field for their college training. In the college year 1936-'37, 7190 such students were enrolled in the 53 schools of the United States. My last study of the mineral technology schools of the United States and Canada was made for the year -1934-'35, and the current study, as the previous one was made for the A.I.M.E. under the auspices of the Division of Mineral Industry Education. Altogether, four studies of enrollment have been made. The first three were for successive college years beginning with 1932-'33. This present one covers a two-year period, for the purpose of these studies may he served satisfactorily if they are made biannually. The data on the schools were collected in the same way as for former studies, 'namely, by questionnaire, dated in this case Nov. 18, 1936. The figures reported are therefore comparable with those of former cars.

Determinadas características devem ser analisadas na chapa antes mesmo do processo de manufatura, visando eliminar possíveis falhas durante as etapas de produção. Especificamente para o processo de repuxo profundo, faz-se necessário avaliar a possível formação de orelha e o possível afinamento da espessura da chapa durante a conformação. Sendo assim, o levantamento dos coeficientes de anisotropia planar ?r e o de anisotropia normal r são essenciais para se obter bons resultados nos processos de conformação. O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a influência da deformação (e) na obtenção dos coeficientes ?r e r na liga UNS C22000, utilizada especificamente para a produção de projéteis A norma ASTM E 517 que apresenta a metodologia para se determinar esses coeficientes não especifica claramente qual e a ser utilizada. Os resultados alcançados não demonstram diferenças significativas com relação a e utilizada nos ensaios, ou seja, os coeficientes obtidos utilizando 0,10, 0,15 e 0,20 de deformação são os mesmos.

The introduction and development of the flotation process have proved to be of such momentous importance to the mining industry of the United States that they deserve to be considered historically.* The origin of the use of oily matter in separating minerals in ores is obscure, because its beginnings were unregarded. The story told by Herodotus concerning the recovery of gold from the mud of a lake by means of feathers daubed with pitch in the hands of apocryphal virgins is as pertinent to our inquiry as the yarn, two thousand years later, of a young school-teacher in Colorado that was washing oil-stained ore-sacks in her brother's assay-office when she noted the floating of pyrite on the water contaminated by the oil. In any event, the method patented by Carrie Everaon in 1885 was a complete failure, except as factitious evidence for trying to disprove the originality of subsequent inventions. An early and inadvertent use of the affinity of oil for metallic surfaces is suggested by the story of Jason and the Argonauts, who extracted gold from the gravel of the river Colchis by means of sheepskins. The woolly hide sewed, like the blankets used in our early stamp-mills, to arrest the gold, which was further detained by the oil on the fleece. Strabo, referring to a later period, says that in the country of the Soanes, who inhabit the valley of the Colchis, “the winter torrents are said to bring down even gold, which the barbarians collect in troughs pierced with holes, and lined with fleeces; and hence the fable of the Golden Fleece”.† William Pryce

Although the economic importance of recovering copper by leaching of mine work dumps from open-pit operations has been realized for some time, serious attempts to understand and to improve such operations through scientifi research has been made only in recent years. This progress report covers the results of chemical, physical, and biological studies pertaining to the dump-leaching process and discusses salient features and parameters that may be helpful in improving such operations. The dump leaching of low-grade copper ores, as an integral part of the open-pit mining operations in the Southwest, has been practiced for the last 50 years and is increasing in importance as one of the major sources of copper. The recent acceleration in dump leaching can be attributed to: (1) the greater tonnages of low-grade ores mined and dumped at newer mines as well as resulting from increased stripping ratios at the older mines, (2) the relatively small investment required for dump leaching facilities per pound of copper recovered contrasted with expansion of milling facilities to recover equal amounts of the metal by raising tonnage throughout, (3) low labor requirements needed for leaching, and (4) the simple and continuous nature of the process needing little close supervision of trained operators. In the past, the mining companies have not worried about efficiency in dump leaching but have been satisfied with whatever metal recoveries could be made without much effort. However, because of the huge amounts of metal accumulating in the low-grade waste dumps, compared to the relatively small amount recovered annually, an operator today cannot leave dump leaching to chance. What appears to be a simple, empirical process is actually a very complex one involving a large number of critical factors that encompass Several Scientific disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and hydrology. Aços de alta resistência mecânica têm sido aplicados largamente no setor automotivo para redução do peso veicular e aumento da segurança. O aço de alta resistência e baixa liga (ARBL) é um dos exemplos de materiais utilizados em peças estruturais e de reforço dos automóveis. Nesse trabalho foi avaliado o efeito das temperaturas de bobinamento e encharque nas propriedades mecânicas do aço ARBL laminado a frio microligado ao nióbio, com limite de escoamento mínimo de 410 MPa, produzido em escala industrial. De uma forma geral, foram observados queda nos limites de escoamento e resistência, e aumento do alongamento total do aço com a elevação das temperaturas avaliadas. Foi observado que a temperatura de encharque apresentou uma maior influência, ocasionando uma maior queda na resistência mecânica. Como não foram verificadas alterações significativas no tamanho de grão ferrítico, as variações nos valores de propriedades mecânicas podem ser atribuídas ao coalescimento de precipitados.

The aging behavior of a Cu-Ti (3.2 at. pct Ti) alloy has been followed by electrical resistivity, hardness, and metallographic changes. The resistivity data indicate two principal processes, the first causing a sharp decrease in resistivity, and the second, which occurs over a long period of time, a much smaller rate of decrease. Lamellar nodules, Widmanstätten platelets, and homogeneous continuous precipitation was observed. The Widmanstätten platelets grow at the expense of the latter. When this study was initiated, little information was available on the aging behavior of copper-base titanium alloys. Several articles'-3 that appeared in the early 1930's showed that these alloys could be strengthened by precipitation, but a detailed study was not made. A dynamic programming algorithm is presented that takes a series of nested phases, a fixed mining-rate schedule and a fixed plant-production-capacity schedule, and, from these, finds the mining and cutoff grade sequence that maximizes the net present value. This tool allows the mining engineer to quickly look at project sensitivity to various production capacities, commodity prices and costs. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of how it has been used at Newmont Gold.

"IntroductionREEFS of Silurian age are recognized in southwestern Ontario, both in outcrop and from subsurface information. This paper deals with the so-called 'pinnacle' reefs which are known only in the subsurface. For the purpose of this paper, the pinnacle reefs are arbitrarily defined as those structures having a height of over 250 feet and a length of less than two miles. This definition eliminates numerous mounds and other broader, more subdued, structures of less certain origin, found in subsurface beds.The term 'pinnacle reef' is perhaps unfortunate, but it is in common usage in Ontario and is used elsewhere for different types of reefs. A new name is justified by the unusual environment and structure of the Ontario reefs, but it is unlikely that any other term would gain acceptance. Rather than propose a new term which would be ignored or result in further confusion and misuse, the name 'pinnacle', as defined above, is used in this paper.Pinnacle reefs have been found over a fairly large part of southwestern Ontario. The known reefs of this type parallel the southeast edge of lake Huron and •follow the strike of the structure contours which circle the Michigan basin (see Figure 1). In total, twenty-five such reefs have been discovered in southwestern Ontario."

During the 1990’s several copper heap leach facilities treating crushed and agglomerated oxide and sulfide ore were constructed in South America. The majority of these facilities have been in operation for at least three years, during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of the heaps. The basis for the paper is a compilation of these operators’ experiences, leading to a discussion of the lessons learned over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of any inter-lift liners.

Organization In 1948, the Committee on Divisionalization and Publication Program of AIME, known as the Johnson Committee, recommended the reorganization of the Institute into three branches, Mining, Metals and Petroleum. This recommendation was accepted and the new organizational structure was implemented in Jan., 1949. The Mining Branch, at the time of the formation, had three divisions: the Coal Division formed in 1929, the Industrial Minerals Division (IndMD) dating from 1935, and the Minerals Beneficiation Division (MBD) formed in 1948 from the Milling Methods Committee, which had existed for many years. There did not exist, however, a division for the geologists and mining engineers. From the time of the founding of the Institute, this group was the main stem of AIME and never felt the need to segregate. The disciplines of mining and geology were served by a number of technical standing committees of AIME. With the birth of the new Branch, a new Division, the Mining, Geology and Geophysics Division (MGGD) was formed, completing the divisional structure of the Mining Branch and providing a home for all members. The governing body was the Mining Branch Council, with two members from each Division of the Mining Branch and one each from the Mineral Industry Education Division and the Mineral Economics Division. These last two divisions served all three Branches of AIME. The Division is such an important unit in the organization structure that it is of value to explain that it appoints committees to handle pro- grams, publications, and awards - representing the main functions of the Institute - as well as many others. There is enough flexibility in the organization so that each Division may have its own special committee structure as long as primary functions are provided. The past is indeed prologue to the future, for in 1957 the Johnson "Branches" gave way to the Fletcher "Societies." The Fletcher Committee, in 1958, recommended a new reorganization into Societies, each with the authority to administer its own finances and to designate certain officers and directors to the AIME Board. This paper addresses detailed models of the temporal pattern of material flows produced by longwall mining units and procedures for inferring the parameters of these models from field data. First, a model is established that predicts material flows referred to shearer position and cutting element. This model is comprised of trend and fluctuation components. The trend component, which is invariant between repetitions of the cut cycle, accounts for deterministic effects on the flow pattern, such as web depth variation as a function of the cutting operation, systematic tendencies for seam height and cutting speed variations along the face, changes in the relative velocity between the shearer and face conveyor, etc. The fluctuation component models random effects on material flow and employs time series approaches. Subsequently, a method is given for converting the positionally-referenced flows to temporally-referenced flows. The model serves as a basis for generating detailed, accurate computer simulations of material flows from longwall units. As such, it provides a more rigorous foundation for analysis of cutting procedures and outby materials handling systems in longwall mines.

Conversion of coal into high-value gases via gasification offers significant pollution reduction and efficiency improvement benefits associated with controlled combustion of clean gases for power generation. However, current gasification-based electricity production technologies, such as IGCC do not address carbon dioxide emissions. The focus of the study is CO2 capture on CaO prior to combustion of coal-derived gases. To overcome kinetic and stability limitations associated with its utilization, CaO is distributed on high-surface area -Al2O3 and supported on a ceramic honey-comb monolith. The proposed method allows for efficient capture of CO2 from a gas mixture, as studied in a flow-through reactor system. This novel method of CO2 capture is used here to argue for pre-combustion capture of CO2 in coal gasification-based power plants. When CaO is present during the steam reforming of coal gasification gases, continuous withdrawal of CO2 from the system provides for higher yields of reforming products (hydrogen gas) by influencing the thermodynamic equilibrium of the entire system.

Swire Seabed is dedicated to being at the forefront of the Autonomous Subsea Revolution. The company is currently working along and developing operational, technical and market strategies where autonomous technology is the driving force. Swire Seabed’s vessel Seabed Constructor is currently mobilized and operating eight Hugin AUVs and 6 Surface going USVs. This significant and revolutionary spread is owned by Ocean Infinity. Ocean Infinity and Swire Seabed is currently involved in the search for the missing MH370 – in about 3 months the vessel and autonomous spread have fine combed an area of deep sea floor spanning over more the 100 000 km2 . With such a considerable spread with a depth rating of 6000 meter – Swire Seabed and Ocean Infinity is challenging long held paradigms in subsea mapping and resource surveys. Highly accurate and precise data can be acquired for large areas in record time, and at a comparatively much reduced cost. As one earlier required several vessels and associated crews and logistical support – Swire Seabed and Ocean infinity are now able to operate a large number of AUVs and USVs, through technological advances in automatic data-processing and interpretation, from a single offshore vessel. This opens up vast possibilities for emerging markets such as subsea-minerals. Swire Seabed is also developing strong collaborative relationships with academic institutions. Along with UIB Swire Seabed is developing methodology for deep sea geological and geophysical resource searches applying AUVs at an industrial scale – this work is based on UIBs groundbreaking work and significant experience in the same fields. In particular Swire Seabed and K.G Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research (UIB) have developed methodologies for conducting detailed Seep-Searches at a large geographical scale. UIB and Swire Seabed is further pursuing a formalized long term relationship for academic and industrial cooperation and exchange in AUV operation and methodology development. Whilst K.G Jebsen Centre for deep sea research have been involved in basig deep sea research for years, Swire Seabed have specialized in cost-effective heavy duty operations in water depths greater the 3500 meters. This collaboration affords the subsea mining community a unique pool of both insight and operational capacity.

Immiscible displacement tests were performed in a consolidated sandstone core over the interfacial tension range from less thdn 0.01 to 5 dynes/cm to better define how interfacial tension (IFTJ reduction can lead to increased oil recovery. Data obtained were displacement efficiency at breakthbrough vs IFT for both drainage and imbibition conditions. These tests simulate water flooding under oil-wet and water-wet conditions, respectively. Results of the study have shown that displacement efficiency under both oil-wet and water-wet conditions can be markedly improved by a sufficient reduction in IFT. In the particular porous media used and for the low pressure gradients employed, the IFT must be reduced to a value less than about 0.07 dynes/cm to achieve increased recovery at the time of breakthrough of the injected phase. Below 0.07 dynes /cm, further small reductions in IFT result in large increases in displacement efficiency. Observed increases in recovery were obtained at pressure gradients which are well below those which can exist in the interwell area of a reservoir under water flood. The effect of pressure gradient on recovery is discussed. INTRODUCTION A residual oil saturation remains in rock which has been water flooded because, under usual reservoir conditions, the driving force which can be generated is inadequate to expel oil trapped by capillary forces. Since these capillary forces can be reduced by reducing the IFT a frequently studied method of increasing oil recovery has been the use of surfactants to reduce the water-oil interfacial tension. Mungan l observed improved recovery in both water-wet and oil-wet systems at 1.1 dyne /cm IFT, finding that the amount of improvement was greater in oil-wet systems. Moore and Blum,2 working with visual flow cell micro-models, con- cluded that recovery cannot be improved in water-wet systems by injecting surfactant solutions. They calculated that, for a pressure gadient of 1 psi/ft in their model, the IFT must be reduced to 0.03 dynes/cm to release oil trapped under water-wet conditions. Berkeley et al.3 indicated that, at representative field flooding rates, the IFT must be reduced to 0.001 dyne/cm to improve recovery, Thus, there is a wide variation of opinion about the IFT levels needed to improve recovery under field conditions. These previous investigators all have used as their experimental method the addition of surfactants to the injected water. The use of surfactant solutions to reduce IFT creates two experimental problems: (1) the loss of surfactant through adsorption on reservoir rock can obscure the true IFT value which exists at the displacement front, and (2) at very low values of IFT emulsifica-tion of oil and water commonly occurs. It is difficult, therefore, to determine whether the increased recovery is caused by IFT reduction as such, or is instead caused by emulsification. Also the properties of the available surfactants limit the IFT range which can be studied. In the present study the purpose is to better define how interfacial tension reduction can lead to increased oil recovery. A matter of great interest is the amount of recovery improvement potentially achievable in this way. The study was made using very low pressure gradients which was well within the range achievable by water flooding in the interwell region of petroleum reservoirs. A unique experimental approach was chosen to avoid adsorption and emulsification problems, and to allow convenient control of IFT. The fluid phases used were the equilibrium vapor and liquid phases of the methane-n-pentane system. The interfacial tension level was varied by changing the equilibrium pressure of the methane-pentane system over the range from 1,200 psia to near the critical pressure (2,420 psia). All tests were performed at a controlled temperature of 100F. The IFT-vs-pressure relationship for the methane-pentane system was based on the data of Stegemeier and Hough,6 and on new data obtained in this study. With this experimental approach it has been possible to study displacement at lower values of IFT than have been previously investigated.

The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).

(communication to the Secretary): Mr. Rothwell's condemnation of my paper on the International Correspondence Schools as not giving an impartial view of the whole field of such enterprises, because it was confined to the description of a single one, might be legitimate if I had undertaken or professed to do anything else than that which I was requested by the Secretary of the Institute to do—namely, to give an account of this particular institution. This is a sufficient answer to all his direct or implied criticisms upon my omission to mention either persons or organizations outside of the special limits set for me. Recognizing fully that personalities have no place whatever in the Transactions, I regret the necessity of making the following statement in answer to Mr. Rothwell's charge that I omitted to give due credit to Mr. Ewald, a former principal of the International Correspondence Schools. The Colliery Engineer School of Mines was started in 1891, and its first student was enrolled October 16, 1891. During the fall of the same year the mine-mechanical course was laid out along the same general line that had already been followed in the mining course. This mine-mechanical course was the foundation from which sprung the later developments of the several mechanical courses. Scorodite is considered as a secondary mineral formed from the product of weathering of primary minerals by chemical or biological reactions. In the case of biological scorodite formation, microorganisms mimic and accelerate what in nature takes a very long time, i.e. biocrystallisation. The goal of the biological scorodite formation is to form very stable arsenic crystals suitable for long-term and safe disposal. The biological formation of scorodite is a novel combination of biological oxidation, biocrystallisation, and proper bioreactor design to achieve the biological formation of scorodite crystals in one step. We have explored simultaneous biological arsenic and iron oxidation at 30ºC and at 70ºC leading to arsenic-jarosite phases and scorodite, respectively. As biologically formed scorodite crystals are very stable (TCLP < 1 mg/L As (V)), the risk of arsenic toxicity is minimized when leaching takes place. This process is suitable for arsenic concentrations above 0.5 g/l As achieving up to 20 mg/l As in the effluent. This biological scorodite formation system is a selfsufficient bio-oxidation system and therefore many new applications can be explored such as reprocessing of arsenic trioxide, orpiment or calcium arsenate to scorodite crystals for a stable and safe disposal.

The potential use of the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig to clean fine coal has been studied. It was found capable of cleaning coal at very fine sizes, at least to 0.038 mm at relative densities as low as 1.6. This effect was however very dependent upon the solids feed rate and the absence of significant amounts of clay slimes. Comparisons with a spiral and a laboratory scale Jameson Flotation Cell were made. The concept of recleaning spiral product was investigated. Use of a spiral to reclean the coarse fraction, and a centrifugal jig or flotation to treat the fine fraction, gave significant improvements in final ash values over spiral recleaning of the full size. Future R&D needs include improving feed rate capacity, and application to problems like pyrite removal that are difficult to solve via flotation.
