The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) academy in Beckley, WV, received enquiries from various segments of the mining industry concerning alcohol and substance abuse in the mining industry. The MSHA Director formed a committee, the Mining Industry Committee on Substance Abuse (MICSA), to deal with these enquiries. The committee met in April 1985 at the mining academy in Beckley. The MICSA committee expanded its membership to represent labor, management, and government agencies affiliated with the mining industry as well as government agencies dealing with alcohol and drug abuse. This expanded 18-member committee met for the first time in July 1985. At that time, two cochairmen were elected, one from labor and one from management. MICSA has spent time on education by sharing information on the issues and by calling in outside experts for advice and consultation. The committee also initiated several projects. These include a resource manual on substance abuse and employee assistance programs. Mine operators and labor unions can use these programs as guides. MICSA is also assembling statistics on substance abuse, particularly as applied to mining. And the committee commissioned an Education film, Substance Abuse, Is It Our Problem? (The results of a survey on drug use, given in Table 1, suggest that substance abuse may indeed be a problem.) The educational film, produced by MSHA, is an introduction to the problem of substance abuse in the mining environment. The film encourages mine operators, labor unions, and miners to analyze their individual circumstances to determine whether a problem exists. The film also offers ways to deal with the problem. And the film invites the mining industry to request additional information from MICSA. There is no single approach to substance abuse that will fit the need of every mining operation. As with any health, safety, or production problem, remedies must be site specific. MICSA's aim is to channel ideas to those who seek to help employees in a mining environment who seek to rid themselves of alcohol and substance abuse. As stated more formally: The Mining Industry Committee on Substance Abuse represents the efforts of labor, management, and government. The mission of the committee is to make the mining industry aware of the problems resulting from alcohol and other drug abuse and to recommend possible methods to remedy the problem. The function of the committee is to assist the industry in developing programs and resources to recognize and provide help for troubled employees, and thus reduce the risk of accidents, while lower absenteeism and increasing productivity.

Commercially, celestite (SrSO4) is the predominant strontium mineral. Among other strontium-bearing minerals, only strontianite (SrCO3) occurs commonly; however, it is rarely an item of commerce. Production of celestite is principally in Mexico, Spain, and Turkey. An attempt to produce celestite in Canada was unsuccessful. The United States, which is wholly dependent on imports, chiefly from Mexico (99%), is the largest consumer of strontium. Lesser quantities are consumed in Japan and Europe. The Federal Republic of Germany is the principal source of strontium compounds imported to the US. Uses The principal uses of strontium are for the manufacture of strontium carbonate and nitrate. Carbonate is used in glass for TV tube face plates and in ceramic ferrites for magnets. Nitrate is used in pyrotechnics, mainly in safety flares, to which it imparts a characteristic brilliant red color. Minor amounts of strontium compounds are used in electrolytic zinc manufacturing where the carbonate is used to remove unwanted lead. Small quantities are consumed in greases, ceramics, soaps, alloys, and pharmaceuticals. Specifications Typical celestite specifications for the carbonate and nitrate markets are shown in Table 1. Specifications of manufactured carbonate, sold in two grades, one to the glass industry and the other for ceramic ferrites, are shown in Table 2. Both grades of carbonate are shipped in palletized 50-lb bags. Glass grade material is shipped in bulk by rail. [ ] Manufacturing Processes The following description is adapted from Anon. (1980) . The manufacturing process for strontium carbonate and strontium nitrate chemicals is conceptually simple. Strontium nitrate is made from strontium carbonate in two additional steps. The production process begins with celestite, the natural form of strontium sulfate. In the first step the ore is crushed, ground, and mixed with coke. This mixture is then fed into a kiln where the ore is reduced at high temperatures to strontium sulfide; the coke is added to the ore as a source of energy and carbon. DURING the last few years, the trend in the aircraft and automotive industries has been toward higher and higher operating engine temperatures. This has created considerable interest in the effect of temperature on the properties of alloys. In the magnesium field, it has been recognized for many years that the addition of cerium imparts high strength and good resistance to creep at elevated temperatures. Beck,1 in his treatise on-magnesium, has summarized the work of German investigators. This includes the unpublished data of Menking, showing the increase in strength and hardness of extruded alloys containing 2 to 20 per cent Ce at temperatures from 200 to 300°C. (68° to 572°F.) and the results of Vosskühler, who demonstrated the improved resistance to creep of alloys containing 6 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn and 0.5 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn at 150°C. (302°F.). Wellinger and Keil2 have also reported the creep properties of a forged magnesium-cerium-manganese alloy at 200° and 250°C. (392° and 482°F.). Haughton and Prytherch have determined the tensile properties of various forged magnesium alloys containing cerium, cerium plus manganese, cerium plus calcium, cerium plus nickel, cerium plus nickel plus manganese, and cerium plus cobalt plus manganese at temperatures up to 290°C. (554°F.). Magnesium-cerium alloys have been used in some commercial applications. It is reported that an alloy containing 3 per cent Ce plus 0.5 per cent Mn plus 0.5 per cent Ca is being used on a forged impeller in Great Britain. Two forged parts made from an alloy with a nominal composition of 5 per cent Ce and 2 percent Mn have been found on the German .BMW-801D aircraft engine. These two forgings consist of a supercharger impeller and a rear cam-follower guide. In this country, several types of pistons have been made experimentally in both .the cast and the forged conditions from an alloy containing 6 per cent Ce plus 2 per, cent Mn and in the cast condition from an alloy of magnesium plus 10 per cent Ce. The cast pistons have been tested in various types of internal-combustion engines, with promising results. This paper presents the results of an extensive investigation on the properties of various cerium-containing magnesium alloys in both the cast and the forged conditions. Data are presented to show the beneficial effects of increasing amounts of cerium on the mechanical properties of magnesium at elevated temperatures. A maioria dos materiais poliméricos sintéticos apresentam superfícies quimicamente inertes, isentas de porosidade e baixa energia de superfície. Este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar a modificação superficial do substrato têxtil de forma a aumentar a sua molhabilidade. Os tecidos de poliéster são hidrofóbicos e, por isso são desconfortáveis aos usuários, pois a fibra não absorve o suor do corpo, outro fator que é prejudicado pela hidrofobicidade da fibra de poliéster é o tingimento das mesmas. Portanto, tratamentos superficiais vêm sendo utilizados para minimizar esse problema e o plasma é uma técnica que se mostra bastante eficaz. O plasma ao interagir com a superfície do substrato provoca alterações químicas e físicas melhorando suas propriedades. Portanto, através do plasma é possível alterar as propriedades físico-químicas das superfícies de tecidos de poliéster, tendo como resultado o aumento da hidrofilidade dos mesmos com o incremento de grupos funcionais polares e o aumento da rugosidade em sua superfície. As amostras foram tratadas em um reator de plasma de barreira dielétrica a pressão atmosférica, em diferentes tempos de tratamento e voltagem. Após as funcionalizações as amostras foram submetidas ao teste de capilaridade, a fim de observar a melhora na hidrofilidade. Todas as amostras tratadas tiveram aumento na molhabilidade, com exceção, as amostras tratadas com 10 kV, onde não houve alteração.

Introduction Chemical and mineralogical constitution play a very important role in the processing of ores because they dictate the method, either physical or chemical, for extracting the mineral or metal. Similarly, the mineralogical nature of the ore, especially the grain size of the valuable minerals, is very important in its processing. The fineness of the grain may be such that physical separation pro- cesses may be eliminated in preference to chemical techniques. In the past, very little attention has been devoted to the geo- logical and mineralogical occurrences which may be potential sources of ores by both the geologist and mineral processing engineer. On the one hand, geologists have devoted less attention to lower grade, complex mineral deposits, and, therefore, may have inadvertently curtailed an exploration 2rogra.m. On the other hand, the metal- lurgists have neglected to study in detail the geological environ- ments and mineralization of potential ores with the view of deter- mining the critical parameter that could assist in economically processing complex submarginal deposits. In the final analysis, a chemical processing technique converts the valuable metals to a mobile state under conditions similar to those which deposited originally in the host rock. The relationship between ore-genesis and chemical processing is close when the process of mineral or metal deposition in a particular ore deposit is understood--putting the metal in solution by reversing the process of deposition is re- latively easy. In the hydrometallurgical circuit, many phase separation steps are usually necessary. Typical steps are pregnant liquor - leach residue separation by counter- current decantation or continuous vacuum filtration, clarification of liquids prior to precipitation, ion exchange or solvent extraction, dewatering of final product, etc. The paper discusses the more recent advances in these areas and considers general operating parameters and cost factors. In addition, emphasis is placed on future needs because of the growing importance and necessity of hydrometallurgical processing of minerals.

In tests on polycrystalline copper and aluminum, the ratio of the yield stress to modulus of elasticity was found to be strongly dependent on tempemture. Also, it was shown that the change of the yield stress with temperature of a material at a given temperature and deformed to a given yield stress, but not necessarily to the same strain, does not depend on previous mechanical thermal history. Likewise, for a material at a given temperature and deformed to a given yield stress, the rate of work hardening is independent of the temperature of prior stressing. It has been shown by Los and Orowan1 and by Dorn, Goldberg, and Tietz2 that the temperature dependence of the yield stress-strain curves of crystalline materials reflects two effects: not only does the yield stress of a material in a given structural state depend on the temperature, but the structural state (and the corresponding strain hardening) after a given amount of plastic straining also depends on the temperature at which the pre-straining has been carried out. Thus, for instance, if a specimen of a ductile metal has been strained along the stress-strain curve 1 at room temperature to point A, Fig. 1, and then the straining continued in liquid nitrogen along curve NR, the yield stress A' immediately after lowering the temperature is lower than the yield stress A" of a specimen that has been strained by the same amount in liquid nitrogen (along curve 3). AA' represents the effect of the temperature change upon the yield stress of the specimen pre-strained at room temperature; A' A" is the excess strain hardening acquired if the pre-straining has been carried out in liquid nitrogen instead of at room temperature. The dependence of the yield stress (i.e., of the structural state acquired during preceding straining) upon the conditions (speed, temperature) of a pre-straining is the reason for the nonexistence of a so-called "mechanical equation of state" for plastic deformation. A 'mechanical equation of state" is a relationship of the form F(s,E, e, T) = 0, or s = f(E, E, T) [1] It was first suggested by Ludwik3 that plastic deformation might obey such an equation; this, however, was conclusively disproved by experiments of Kochendorfer.4 Additional disproofs were given in

"Five main lignite seams occur in the Tertiary Ravenscrag Formation in the Eastevan area, at depths of 100 feet or less. They are named, in ascending order: the Boundary, Estevan, Souris, Roche Percee and Short Creek seams. A total sequence of approximately 250 feet is represented by the coal beds and interstratified clays, silts and sands. Strata dip to the southeast at 25 feet per mile or less and trike northeast. Large areas underlain by coal seams at shallow depths are delineated. Reserve calculations are dependent on detailed information on seam thicknesses and feasible stripmining depths. The stratigraphically higher seams are thinner on the average than lower seams and this, together with the increase in elastic size fractions in higher strata, suggests a retreat of a Tertiary marine margin to the south during the closing depositional history of coal seams and associated strata."

This presentation shows the results of laboratory and field tests to date for the NCHRP project entitled "Downdrag on Bitumen-coated Piles". This project required to test a variety of bitumens in the laboratory to determine their properties and then to establish a field testing program to verify the bitumens effectiveness. Figure 1 shows an organizational chart that gives an overview of the agencies involved in the project. The first part describes the laboratory testing program in which bitumen samples of various types were obtained from a variety of manufacturers. Initially, classification tests were performed to verify the manufacturers' specifications. Additional tests were then developed and performed to determine the bitumens behavior under the various conditions that they may be exposed to in the field. The test results were analyzed and their usefulness for design purposes were determined. The test results are presented in either graphical or tabular form. The second part describes the field testing program which was designed to test the effectiveness of various bitumens under a wide range of soil, temperature, and construction conditions. The first site was in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where a construction project was to take place in the winter of 1989-90. This was ideal for the cold temperature extreme that was needed. The soil conditions were conducive to downdrag problems: an embankment placed over soft clay underlain by dense sand resulting in end-bearing piles. The other site was in New Orleans, Louisiana. The part of the project involving this downdrag study was to be carried out in the summer of 1990. The hot summer temperatures and extremely soft soil conditions (resulting in friction piles) gave the other extreme needed for this study. Each site is discussed in

Consolidation Coal Co.'s Renton mine, a 680 000-t/y (750,000-stpy) underground operation located in western Pennsylvania, has reduced the time required for overcast construction in its advancing operations by adopting a prebolting technique followed by multiple blasting. In the past, the mine's overcasts had been excavated by the continuous mining machines used to advance the section. More recently, the overcasts were blasted down and then rebolted with a stoper drill. The new system, using a two-part combination bolt, has proven very successful in speeding up overall construction time and providing more positive horizontal control in blasting. The prebolting approach allows the roof to be blasted down and loaded out without the need for rebolting the shot-out area.

Gold was discovered at Waihi in 1878. In 1987 the modern Martha Mine opened in the middle of the town of Waihi. Newmont Waihi Gold as the current licence holder has been operating the mine since 2000. The current open pit was scheduled to stop production in mid 2006. An underground mine is currently being developed to the east of the town.   In 2001 serious subsidence issues from historical underground mine workings outside the mining licence and the forecast closure of the open pit acted as a catalyst for the development of new communication initiatives.   In this context Newmont Waihi Gold and the Hauraki District Council initiated a community consultation process with the people of Waihi. The Waihi Community Consultation Committee (WCCC) was established in May 2003. After an initial brief to act as a forum for community participation in closure and rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, the group quickly took on a much more proactive role working towards the long-term social, environmental, cultural, economic and spiritual sustainability of Waihi.   In the course of over three years of meetings all groups represented on the committee have presented their views, developed ideas and established an organisational structure to bring those ideas to fruition. The challenge now is to work together to consolidate likely options, seek sources of funding, produce business proposals and implement the plan for the future of Waihi.   This paper backgrounds the experience to date and describes the outcomes of the process. As a Demand Side Management (DSM) Project, money was granted for the procurement and installation of a 3-Chamber Pipe Feeder System (3-CPFS) at AngloGold Ashanti?s Moab Khotsong Mine in the Vaal River Area, Orkney. The first submission was done to ESKOM in December 2002 and the contract was signed in September 2006 at a cost of R 57-million with an envisaged reduction in power of 7 Megawatt per month based on a 90% utilization factor. The project was finally commissioned in December 2008. The technology is not new, but the intent of the paper is to share with others the experience gained by using the technology in a deep-level mine in order to reduce overall power consumption.

Geophysical logging is routinely undertaken as part of most Australian coal mining exploration programs. Typically, the main application is the determination of coal seam depth and the qualitative estimation of coal quality, lithology and rock strength. For rock strength estimation, sonic transit times relate to the elastic properties of the rock and provide a general correlation with uniaxial compressive strength. However, experience has shown that site-specific relationships are necessary to account for different geological environments. In this paper we describe results from a series of recent studies that have provided a more comprehensive method of geotechnical strata characterisation using detailed lithological interpretation and rock property estimation from borehole logs. This has resulted in an improved method of estimating rock strength via the determination of the proportions of quartz and clay plus the porosity. We also propose a rock classification scheme based on geophysical log analysis. This builds on the existing acceptance of the sonic log as an indicator of rock strength and adds scores according to the moisture, cohesion, porosity and quartz content inferred from the geophysical logs. The new scheme can be related to existing mapping based schemes such as CMRR and the Q-system.

The semi-annual meeting of the Montana Section was held at the Silver Bow Club, Butte, Montana, on Friday, Nov. 16, at 8 p. m.; this was a postponement of the regular October meeting because of conflict in date with the St. Louis meeting of the Institute. An informal dinner was served to 68 members and guests. After dinner, Chairman W. C. Siderfin called the meeting to order. The minutes of the annual meeting, of Feb. 2, 1917, and the special meeting of May 21, 1917, were read and approved. C. W. Goodale led the discussion with "Notes on the St. Louis Meeting." He was followed by J. H. Warner who spoke on " The Joplin and Miami Districts," and by J. L: Bruce, Alexander Leggatt, N. B. Braly, and E. B. Young, the latter speaking on the work of the War Minerals Committee; and on the Cosden Oil Refinery at West Tuba, Okla. R. H. Sales reviewed briefly the manganese situation. E. N. Norris presented a paper on "Fire Proofing of Mine Shafts by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co." This resulted in interesting discussion by C. L. Berrien, C. E. Nighman, N. B. Braly, W. B. Daly, B. H. Dunshee, and J. J. Carrigan. C. L. Berrien and C. E. Nighman presented their papers on "Fire Extinction by Hydraulic Filling." In view of the late hour, discussion was waived. The executive committee, by unanimous consent, decided to request written discussion of the above papers to be presented at the next meeting, in February. B. B. Thayer spoke interestingly on the work of the Naval Consulting Board, and referred to the arsenic situation. Spencer Miller, also a, member of the Naval Consulting Board, entertained the-meeting with a vivid description of the method of "Coaling Battleships at Sea." Robert Sticht of Tasmania, in a short talk, spoke feelingly of his relations with the United States. At a late hour adjournment ended a most successful and interesting meeting. E. B. Insights into uranium mining projects of the future can be gained by a careful statistical analysis of past and present deposits, as well as an examination of recent trends for uranium resource evaluation and primary uranium production. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provides the necessary data and corresponding mechanisms as inputs for methodologies that enable strategic and scientific evaluations of long-term security of supply uranium required to sustain the demand for nuclear fuel. Sustainability of the uranium mining industry and subsequently new uranium mines of the future requires innovation and expertise to lower operating costs, maintain or improve uranium recovery while meeting the requirements of stakeholders in regard to protection of the environment and safety of the workers and general public.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi comparar, por simulação termoquímica, o impacto relativo nos consumos de CV granulado enfornado pelo topo, utilizando CV produzido por fornos retangulares de alvenaria e CV obtido no reator de carbonização contínua da Vallourec, o Carboval. A qualidade siderúrgica superior do CV Carboval permitiu reduzir o consumo específico de CV granulado em 18,2kg/t que, somando ao melhor rendimento gravimétrico e menor geração de frações finas, torna atrativa e viável esta tecnologia. Estas vantagens impulsionam o setor a sair do artesanal para o industrial na produção de CV.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1983 was $361.3 million, an increase of $61.9 million over that of 1982. The increase reversed a downward trend that started in 1980 and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State. Output of most nonfuel minerals increased to some degree with unit value increases creating the record-high value year. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and crushed stone were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; fourth in ferroalloys, dimension marble, common clay, and fire clay; fifth in bentonite and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

O objetivo deste trabalho é utilizar a termodinâmica computacional para estudar as propriedades de escórias iniciais dessulfurantes utilizando misturas com diferentes fluxantes: fluorita, sodalita, borra de alumínio, B2O3 e ilmenita. A princípio, as misturas foram definidas e em seguida foram realizadas simulações para o aquecimento dessas misturas a 1350 ºC por meio do software FactSage 7.2. Assim, foi calculado o fator de dessulfuração (FDeS) para cada mistura com base nas condições de equilíbrio. As misturas contendo 5 e 10% de fluorita e 5% de sodalita foram as que apresentaram maior FDeS. Em contrapartida, as misturas com 10,15 e 20% de B2O3 tiveram os piores resultados nessa análise. Misturas da literatura também foram simuladas a fim de se obter o FDeS e relacioná-lo com a eficiência.

"During the past nine years the number of cellular phones connected to a network has increased from 34 percent of the world’s population in 2005 to 93 percent in 2014. These phones are powered by a combination of materials including elements such as gold, silver, copper and rare earths. And, as more parts of the world become connected to networks, the number of phones being produced, and the elements they will need, will continue to increase. The demand comes as prices for these commodities are slumping and access to the commodities is getting more difficult, technically and socially.These mobile devices have connected people around the world in ways that could not have been imagined two decades before, and, ironically, this communication has strengthened opposition to the development of the mines that produce the very materials they need to operate.In his keynote address to the 2014 SME Arizona Conference at the JW Starr Pass Resort in Tucson, AZ, on Dec. 8, 2014, John O. Marsden, SME President and president of Metallurgium, spoke to more than 500 attendees about the challenge to produce the materials that society needs while at the same time challenging the general public’s perception of mining that is often inaccurate and less than favorable.Marsden highlighted the amount of raw materials that will be needed not just for phones, but also for things such as automobiles, including electric cars, as a way to illustrate the importance of mining. Even so-called green products such as Tesla cars, which require about 317 kg (700 lbs) of aluminum, 13 kg (30 lbs) of copper and 36 kg (80 lbs) of cobalt for their eco-friendly batteries, will need materials mining provides.These are some of the numbers that the general public is often unaware of. They are part of the necessary things that mining provides for society but are rarely reported on. Instead, it is the accidents like the tailings spill at the Mount Polley Mine in British Columbia and at the Buena Vista Mine (Sonora, Mexico) that grab headlines and stick in the minds of the public, adding more challenges to an industry that already has its own complex technical challenges to deal with."
