The use of existing mine records in conjunction with an appropriate classification scheme can be used successfully to identify and characterize the composition of existing waste rock facilities where traditional approaches based on sampling may be impractical or costly. This paper describes an alternative approach used in an acid rock drainage investigation at a porphyry copper mine with numerous waste rock dumps of varying ages and composition. The approach integrated detailed lithologic and mineralogic information about the ore body and overburden materials with records of pit development and dispatch. A waste rock characterization matrix was developed for the site to meaningfully classify lithology and mineralogic composition of the waste rock. The approach resulted in a focused geochemical testing program and facilitated interpretation and application of the test results.

Rolled sheet products are elastically anisotropic and a large number of measurements of Young's modulus and rigidity modulus are necessary to completely specify their elastic properties. This paper describes and uses a simple measurement technique to obtain the nine elements of the elastic modulus tensor from which all the elastic The elastic properties of a polycrystalline material are usually specified by giving the Young's modulus E and the rigidity modulus G. Unfortunately, these two moduli by themselves are insufficient to completely specify the elastic properties because the rolling process introduces a preferred orientation which makes the material properties can be deduced. In particular, the variation of Young's modulus and the rigidity modulus in the principal planes of a sheet of ausformed steel were deduced. Furthermore, the variation of Young's modulus in the rolling plane was compared with direct measurements. anisotropic. This anisotropy makes E and G functions of the orientation of the test specimen in the sheet so that a complete description of the elasticity requires many measurements on a large number of specimens. A more fundamental approach to the problem is to consider the sheet as a single crystal and measure the elements of its elastic modulus tensor. Although this appears formidable, there have been developed recently high-frequency ultrasonic techniques which yield these tensor elements directly. Burwood Beach Sewage Ocean Outfall is being constructed by the Hunter District Water Board as part of an amplification scheme to eliminate pollution from adjacent bathing beaches. The outfall consists of a 93m vertical shaft, 1950m of 2.7m diameter tunnel with a series of diffuser outlets connecting the seaward end of the tunnel to the sea floor on a rock outcrop. The site of the work is in the Newcastle Coal Measures and the project is complicated by the proximity of colliery workings to tunnel alignment, although the colliery records provided valuable information on geological features. The location of the tunnel was determined to be in the Waratah Sandstone Formation immediately below the colliery workings after three different alternatives were considered. The shaft, which will be sized to suit contractor's construction methods and equipment, will be sunk through about 24.5m of alluvial material and 68.5m of rock. The tender documents were developed to allow the contractor considerable flexibility in construction method to suit available equipment. The specification also allowed great flexibility in tunnel construction method with minimum cross sectional area of 5.7m2 being the basis for a number of allowable alternative profiles ranging from circular to horseshoe.

A number of Articles contained in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea III (UNCLOS) bear directly on legal issues related to the recovery of mineral deposits on the ocean floor. Mineral resources of the continental margin other than oil, gas and hydrates include, sand, gravel, shell, coral, gemstones and phosphorite. Jurisdiction over the exploration and exploitation of these deposits is determined either by the Territorial Sea claims of a coastal state or their recognized sovereign rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). At least 33 coastal states have the right under Article 76 (Continental Shelf regime) to claim seabed jurisdiction beyond 200 nautical miles (EEZ limit). In addition, several states have "Pioneer Investor" status with regard to seabed resources in international waters (The Area). A global maritime boundary database (GMBD) has been developed as a basic resource identifying the current claims of coastal states. It provides detailed information on existing boundaries and limits determined by the UNCLOS accords or by multi-lateral agreements which affect mineral exploration and exploitation. This paper will describe the GMBD and its construction and maintenance.

THE, prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 1920 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry. INDEX NUMBERS OF OIL PRICES The analysis and comparison of price movements may be facilitated by converting actual prices into relative prices, or index numbers, with 1913 taken as a base of 100. In this way, the various price groups are expressed as percentages of the 1913 prices and may thus be readily compared with one another or with the average prices of other commodities similarly expressed. Table 1 gives the index numbers representing the average prices of crude petroleum, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil, lubricating oils, and all commodities. The last named is the index of all commodities as published by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and .is widely accepted .as the official measure of the general price level. The index numbers of oil prices were calculated by the writer from weekly quotations published in trade journals.

Mining haul trucks comprise the majority of the equipment used in underground limestone mining operations and are known to emit high levels of noise. A previous study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that 70-90 percent of all miners have a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) great enough to be classified as a hearing disability by retirement age. These results demonstrate the public health need to protect the hearing of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. ng of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. Cab enclosures present an opportunity to isolate the haul truck operator from both truck and other noise in the mining environment. A total of twenty-five haul truck cabs were studied which were divided into three style (treatment) categories determined by soundproofing features and technology for noise reduction: old-, new-, and retrofitted-style. This study examines the contribution of cab acoustics, operator performance, and maintenance to noise reduction for each cab style. Dosimeters were used to measure 8-hr time weighted average sound pressure levels (TWA8 SPLs) inside and outside the cabs to determine if different acoustical treatments affect cab attenuation. Adherence to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 90 dB TWA8 (with a 90 dB threshold) was used as the main indicator of overall noise reduction achieved. Dosimetery results indicate only 2% of the samples exceeded the PEL, but samples could still be reduced much further. Descriptive and comparative statistics indicate that noise levels inside the new-style cabs are significantly lower than the other two cab styles. Also, data suggest that there is no difference in noise exposures when comparing the old-style to retrofitted cab styles. Operator influence (opening doors and windows) was a significant factor for increasing noise exposure. This paper demonstrates that properly designed cabs can achieve major noise reductions, but noise levels could still be reduced much further below the MSHA PEL. New-style cabs, equipped with modern noise-reduction treatments, exhibit much lower noise exposures than the other two cabs styles, and the effectiveness of the current noise-reduction treatments for retrofitted cabs is questionable. Haul truck driver observations indicate that improved noise exposure reduction training is needed. Finally, specific targets for future noise reduction research are suggested that will further contribute to the prevention of hearing loss for haul truck operators.

An underground mine using room and pillar and retreat mining methods was developed during the 1950?s. In 2009 an open cast mine was opened in the same reserve with the objective of mining five coal seams including the one previously mined. Recently, a series of slope failures were detected at the open cast mine. The surface mine map was overlain on the underground mine map, and it was observed that the slope failures were located above a retreat mined area where the overburden had caved and the ground subsided. The deformation and displacement attributable to subsidence caused a loss of strength in the overburden strata. The objective of this paper is to study the causes of slope sliding (or failure) due to the ground subsidence of rock layers above oldmined out areas. A map was created to overlay the two mines -- the abandoned underground mine and the active surface mining. Two- and three-dimension numerical modeling was conducted to simulate the slope behavior and to verify whether the mine subsidence was the cause of slope instability. This study indicated that the subsided rock layers were the cause of slope instability and sliding.

Ilmenite is the most important raw material for manufacture of titanium dioxide.' Industrially, several other products are made from ilmenite, the most important of which are: ferro titanium, ferro carbon-titanium, copper-titanium, titanium carbide and titanium nitride. The production of titanium metal is still in the laboratory stage because of the difficulty of extraction and as yet no important application for the metal has been found. Ilmenite has received considerable attention as an industrial raw material. Imports of ilmenite concentrates for the first nine months of 1941 were 156,737 short tons, the chief source being Travancore, India.2 Domestic produttion of ilmenite has heretofore been confined to Amherst and Nelson Counties, Virginia, where a complex rutile, ilmenite, and apatite ore is mined and treated to utilize all three of these minerals. A recent report3 has described development of the large titaniferous magnetite ore body at Tahawas, New York, where it is expected that 800 tons of ilmenite concentrates, containing 48 per cent TiO2 will be produced daily. Additional domestic production is expected from a large ilmenite deposit recently opened in caldwell county, North carolina. Flotation tests indicate that a high-grade concentrate containing 53 per cent TiO2 can be made from the North Carolina ore. Prospecting of domestic ores in other areas has been reported.' It appears that increased domestic production of ilmenite may well save considerable shipping space so vitally needed in these times. The composition and chemical structure of pure ilmenite is given by Dana as: FeO, TiO2; Ti, 31.6 per cent, Fe, 36.8 per cent, O2, 31.6 per cent. This composition is variable in that some iron or titanium may be replaced, giving a variable iron-titanium ratio. As an example, the iron-titanium weight ratio of ilmenite in Caldwell County, North Carolina, has been determined to be 0.94 (using 97.1 per cent ilmenite concentrate obtained by heavy liquids on minus Iso-mesh ore) compared with theoretical 1.16. No rutile was noted in this ore to account for the low value. This North Carolina ore is free of magnetite, which is a common associate of ilmenite ores. In view of a large potential production from North Carolina, the Tennessee Valley Authority conducted a study of methods of concentration of that ore, of which the results are reported herein. The Ore Five samples of Ore were taken from the deposit at various exposed locations and were mixed for the study and testing. An attempt was made to proportion the amount of weathered and unweathered portions in making the composite sample, so as to approximate actual operating conditions. An examination of representative specimens of the sample showed the following general facts: 1. The black mineral comprising nearly 70 per cent of the ore is ilmenite.

The purpose of this work is to conduct a preliminary analysis of the spatial variations of the thickness of lignite layers in the area of the Amyndeo mine, and to estimate the lignite reserves of the mine. The reserves are estimated by the method of the Voronoi diagrams, using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. Two data sets are investigated. The first one corresponds to an exhausted part of the mine. The derived reserves estimates are compared with the actual data obtained by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to validate the analysis. The second data set extends over the entire mine, and it is used to derive an approximate estimate of the total lignite reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the total layer thickness is performed. The experimental semivariograms are evaluated for both data sets in different spatial directions. Two possible theoretical models for the experimental semivariogram (the exponential and a novel Spartan model) are compared and discussed. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation is produced accompanied by a map of the kriging precision. The performance of kriging interpolation is discussed in terms of cross validation measures.

IN an engineering fashion we have made an assay of the engineering profession, using as a. sample the engineers listed in "Who's Who in America" (1928-1929). We are aware that some will say it is an unfair sample; that it came from the best mine. This is readily admitted, with this qualification: that all engineers and architects by virtue of their training and experience have been freed of most of the dross to which mankind is heir. They are -a selected group to begin with, having all the potentialities those in the sample possess. We are also aware that some will say a part of those included in the sample are not engineers. Our answer to that criticism is this: An engineer is no less an engineer because for the time being he is president of a bank, a university, an opera company, or a hotel company. Moreover, he is no less an engineer because he is a governor of a commonwealth, a United States senator, a member of the Cabinet, or the President of the United States.

The Mako domain comprises the Mako lodes at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia. This domain was initially bulk or æbucketÆ domained for the open pit resource in 2000, due to complexity in defining the lodes as a result of low drill density. Negative ore tonnage and positive grade and ounce reconciliations were experienced during mining of the domain in the mega-pit, though only small volumes of the domain were mined. Significant amounts of exploration and underground grade control drilling has been completed since the initial bulk domain interpretation and greater geological understanding of the mineralisation controls and geology of the lodes now exists. Mako provides approximately 50 per cent of the ore tonnes and ounces for the North Wall Cut-back, the latest open pit phase of mining at Sunrise Dam. The importance of Mako to mill supply and life-of-mine planning, as well as past reconciliation performance necessitated a reinterpretation of the domain to increase confidence for mining. Historic exploration drilling, underground grade control drilling and detailed pit-wall mapping were used to build mineralised subdomains within the confines of the original domain. These reflect more closely the spatial extents and geological controls on the mineralisation. A new resource model using the multiple indicator kriging (MIK) technique was generated using the new domains. It resulted in a decrease in tonnes and ounces but increase in grade for the sum total of the new domains compared to the old æbucketÆ domain. This is attributed to the increased selectivity and structural constraints imposed by the new domains. A retrospective comparison of the Mako grade control from the mega-pit versus the new resource model was conducted, which æreconciledÆ 103 per cent tonnes, 106 per cent grade and 110 per cent ounces. This has provided confidence that the new model is a better estimate of the lodes. Qualitatively, the new model is a better representation of the geology and extent of the mineralised structures with significant areas of change identifiable. Grade-tonnage plots comparing the 2006 and 2008 models show that most tonnes have been shed from the low-grade û subeconomic grade cut-offs. This is mostly attributable to the volume reduction of æoreÆ in the 2008 model compared to the 2006 model, where the true mineralised zones are captured by the new domains. The reinterpretation and remodelling of Mako is an example of an evolved domain model and shows that mineralised zones need to be differentiated adhering to the geology and geological controls on mineralisation, which are understood largely due to increased drilling density coupled with mapping.

Gold mill effluents contain toxic pollutants such as cyanide (CN), thiocyanate (CNS), ammonia (NH4-N), and a variety of toxic metals. Various practical and economical technologies are in use for the removal of CN and toxic metals from gold mill effluents, however, the removal of CNS and NH4-N is challenging. The presence of CNS and NH4-N may make effluents toxic to aquatic life. The new Canadian Metal Mining Effluent Regulations will require mine effluents to be nontoxic. As a result, there is a need to develop practical and economical technology for CNS and NH4-N removal. The Mine Effluents Program in the Environment Group is presently evaluating biotechnology processes for the removal of CNS and NH4-N from gold mill effluents. The processes being evaluated are attached growth systems such as a Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) and completely mixed suspended growth systems such as a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) operating in a batch mode. The research to date at MMSL has shown that the RBC is very effective in removing CNS and NH4-N from simulated effluents. The NH4-N removal project showed that the RBC is capable of removing 0.8 g NH4-N/m2 of RBC disk area per day at an average temperature of 4.5 oC and hydraulic loading rate of 0.02 m3/m2/d. The RBC was also found to be very effective in removing CNS (feed = 200 mg/L and effluent < 1 mg/L) at 8 oC and a hydraulic loading rate of 0.02 m3/m2/d. The SBR was effective in removing CNS and NH4-N (generated from CNS degradation) at SBR operating conditions of two-12 h treatment cycles and a temperature of 12 oC. The end product of CNS and NH4-N oxidation was NO3-N, which is relatively non-toxic.

Discussion of the Paper of Dr. Douglas, presented at the Toronto Meeting of the Institute, July, 1907 (Trans., xxxviii., 455 to 471). EDGAR HALL, Silverspur, Queensland, Australia (communication to the Secretary*) :-Dr. Douglas has written on this subject before, and his influence has had a powerful effect on the side of freedom among the younger generation of engineers. Moreover, it is not the first time that he has attributed the decline of the copper-smelting industry in Swansea to the secrecy maintained by the firms there engaged in smelting-operations. In this latter statement I think his conclusions are open to criticism. Whether the firms referred to have suffered by their secrecy is their own business-I. bold no brief for them ; but that the decline of the copper-industry at Swansea was inevitable seems to me to be proved conclusively by Dr. Douglas&apos;s own writings. In his paper on The Copper Situation,1 Dr. Douglas says "In comparing iron and copper mining, . . . it must be remembered that 2 tons of average iron ore from the most prolific source now available will make 1 ton of metal; whereas from 33 to 75 tons (say an average of 50 tons) of copper ore must be mined to produce 1 ton of copper." And further: "Last year&apos;s production of iron was made from approximately 50,000,000 tons of ore. Our copper mines, to yield a production of 900,000,000 pounds, must have handled approximately 22,000,000 tons of ore, or nearly half the quantity raised from our iron mines." Is not this the key to the whole situation ? In transporting the 50,000,000 tons of iron-ore, 25,000,000 tons of the metal iron were carried so much nearer to the market, but the transportation of 22,000,000 tons of copper-ore would have carried only 450,000 tons of the metal copper nearer to its ultimate destination. [Secretary&apos;s Note.—The following notes, arranged and edited in this office, but not yet revised by the author, were placed at my disposal with much modest hesitation (due to their incomplete and fragmentary character), upon my earnest request, and my argument that such recent and trustworthy data concerning a new and important mining industry ought not to be withheld from our Transactions, simply because they are not sufficient to constitute a complete academic treatise on the subject. This argument is recommended to the attention of many other members, who are waiting for the opportunity to contribute something "monumental" to our Transaclions. In a number of instances, death has nullified this ambition, and the intended "monumental " contribution has turned out to be an obituary notice by the Secretary, instead of a valuable record of the professional experieuce thus hopelessly lost to the world.—R. H.] The official publications of the Russian Government give fairly complete statistics of the dredges operated in the Empire; and in a recent English bluebook, Mr. Cook&apos;s report on Siberian Trade presents a brief account of dredging in Siberia. The data in Table I. (not given by Mr. Cook) have been taken from the Gold Mining Messenger (Russian) for July, 1905. These interesting statistics, though incomplete, show that the Yenisei dredges are working on poor ground and yield small returns. According to report, but few yield a profit exceeding 10 per cent. per annum on the capital invested. In the summers of 1904 and 1905, I traveled in the Urals as far north as lat. 61° N., long. 61" E., on the Losva river, a part of the vast system of the Ob river. This clear-water stream starts from the summits of the Urals at an altitude of 4,000 ft., and flows through a flat country, densely wooded with larch, spruce, pine, fir, birch and poplar. The river is full offish, and is navigable for good-sized steamers as far as Ivdell. Winter lasts from early November to late April, the temperature ranging from -60" F. to a summer maximum of 90° F. The Que River and Hellyer polymetallic massive sulphide ore bodies are located 3 kilometres apart in the Cambrian Mount Read volcanics of Western Tasmania. Both deposits are classic examples of the Kuroko volcanogenic style. Base and precious metal rich hydrothermal solutions rose through a deep fracture system and vented on the sea floor, causing sulphides to accumu- late in adjacent topographic lows. Together the preproduction geological resource is approximately 23 million tonnes at greater than 18% zinc plus lead, with economically significant silver and gold. Exploration by Aberfoyle in the Mount Read volcanics com- menced in 1970. Que River was discovered in 1973 following a comprehensive data review, a regional stream geochemical survey and a helicopter-borne electromagnetic survey. Production began in 1981, and the mine is currently producing 300,000 tonnes per year. The ore is sold to the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Aus- tralasia Ltd mill at Rosebery. Ten years of extensive geological mapping, soil geochemistry, and induced polarisation, combined with continual study of the Que River orebody and its host rocks, formed a strong frame- work for the discovery of the Hellyer deposit, which was found as a result of drilling .a subtle time domain electromagnetic anomaly in 1983. Hellyer is currently being mined at a rate of 250,000 tonnes per year, with the ore being concentrated at Aber- foyle&apos;s converted Cleveland tin mill. Treatment of 1 million tonnes per year will begin in early 1989 at a new mill located near the Hellyer site.

The Smoky Valley Mine is jointly owned by Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, Felmont Oil Corporation and Case Pomeroy Company. Copper Range Company, a subsidiary of L.L. & E. is the operator of the mine. The mine is located about 60 miles (100 km) north of Tonopah, Nevada on Highway 376 (formerly 8A) in the Big Smoky Valley on the western flank of the Toquima Mountain Range In the shadow of Mount Jefferson. The mine is at an elevation of about 6100 ft. (1860m) and is situated on the southwestern flank of Round Mountain, the hill for which the town of Round Mountain is named. The ore is a rhyolitic iglmbrite with coarse gold occurring along fractures and with fine microscopic gold disseminated in the rock mass. Minor silver is associated nth gold. Annual mining is planned at 5.8 million tons (5.3 million tonnes) per year with 2.2 million tons (2 million tonnes) as ore (7,000 tons or 6,400 tonnes per day).

An ex-situ biological treatment system was implemented at a gold mine site in South Dakota. The system removes selenium and nitrate from a mixture of groundwater and surface water runoff at ambient water temperatures. The Applied Biosciences? system replaced a denitrification system that did not perform consistently, did not treat for selenium and required heating of the influent water. Installation was completed in phases starting with the selenium circuit being brought into operation in February, 2002 and the nitrate circuit in March, 2002. System design can accommodate average flows of 380 L/min (100 gallons/minute) and a maximum flow of 1,136 L/min (300 gallons/min). Four cells were designed to remove nitrate from approximately 30 mg/L to below 10 mg/L and two cells were designed to remove selenium from 0.01 mg/L and higher, to below 0.005 mg/L. No pretreatment is required to operate the system at ambient temperatures, which can fall as low as -12C in the winter, and treat water at temperatures ranging between 8C to 16C. Nutrient requirements are met using a sugar based nutrient mixture that includes a balanced C:N:P:S ratio, trace elements and vitamins. Since start up, the system has consistently been in compliance for nitrate and selenium, treating water to below detection limits for both contaminants. This paper discusses laboratory biotreatability testing of a system designed to remove selenium, arsenic, and nitrate and full-scale implementation and optimization of a system to remove nitrate and selenium.

"One approach to stabilization of rock slopes is to place a buttress at the toe of the slope to provide additional resisting forces and increase the length and strength properties along the failure surface. This paper describes the rock mechanics and mine planning aspects of incorporating a buttress of intact rock in the lower part of the slope as part of the slope design for the south wall of the final pit at Cassiar Mine. Stability analysis techniques and results are described. Analyses results have indicated that, in order to maintain steep over-all slopes in the final pit, a buttress of intact rock shoud be incorporated into the lower section of the slope until late in mine life. The effect of the buttress is to flatten the slope and reduce the slope height thereby improving slope stability. The mining plans would be such that the buttress would be mined out during the last four months of mining when the consequences of instability would be least severe.IntroductionThe concept of using a buttress to stabilize slopes has been used in mining and civil engineering construction in may locations (Richards and Stimpson, 1977). Most buttresses involve placement of coarse rock fill timber cribs or other material as a load at the toe of an already unstable slope to provide forces which resist failure by counteracting driving forces and increasing the length and strength of the failure path.This paper describes the geotechnical and mine planning aspects of incorporating a buttress of intact rock in the design of the south wall of Cassiar Mine. The effect of an intact rock buttress is to flatten the slope and reduce the slope height, thereby improving slope stability. No actual construction is required other than normal excavation of the slope. The ""mine plans would be such that the buttress would be mined out at the end of mine life when the impact of instability would be less severe and additional ore might possibly be recovered from the slopes. Mining of the buttress could induce instability at the very end of mine life at a time when maximum ore extraction has been achieved."

When coal is irradiated by the X-rays emitted from a plutonium 238 isotope, the radiation absorbed by elements of low atomic number (carbon and hydrogen) is lower than that absorbed by elements of high atomic number (silicon, aluminium, iron) which form the ash in coal. The differences are reproducible and readily measurable, and this paper describes how this technique is used to determine the ash content of coal and to optimize measurement accuracy. Uses of the output signal are given with an example of a simple control circuit, and the advantages of instantaneous ash measurement are highlighted in terms of operational convenience and profit.
