In the pressurc die-casting of zinc alloys it is customary to force the molten alloy under high pressure into a permanent steel die by means of a plunger moving in a bushing that has a clearance on the diameter of the order of 0.002 in. Successful operation of the plunger type of machine requires the presence in the zinc alloy of certain percentages of aluminum. Without these aluminum additions, the normal reaction of molten zinc on ferrous materials causes sticking of the plunger arid a complcte shutdown of the equipment. All of the zinc alloys used for pressure dir-rnsting today contain approximately 4 per cent of aLUminum, which is more than suffieient to make plunger opcration feasible. The clearancc bet,ween the plunger and its bushing is an important matter. As the space bccomes larger, there is a loss in effective metal pressure. Ordinary gray cast iron served fairly well and is still uscd in some machines. However, the rate at which the plunger c1earance. increases with this material is considered by many to be far too great. There is, therefore, a serious interest in finding new matcrinls more: capable of retaining the desired clearance during long periods of use. Today marly die casters are using special materials for plungers and bushings selected by the somewhat expensive and time-consuming test of actual experience. An analysis of the problem reveals two possible end points of plunger. operation: (1) the building up of zinc-alloy plunger-material reaction products in sufficient bulk to cause sticking and (2) rapid solution, wear or erosion, all of which will increase the clearance to an undesirable extent. If neither of these takes place, the pluriger will operatc for a long time, of course.. The authors have developed a laboratory apparat,us in which the action of a plunger moving in a bushing immersed in molten zinc alloy could be simulated closely. Such a machine made possible a more rapid and less expensive survey of the available construction materials and an analysis of the specific alloying reactions taking place in the clearance area.

"The virtue of spray drying is that it is a drying method, and so far the only one by which it is possible in one operation to divide a mineral concentrate into its basic primary particles.,In so doing, each particle gets the same treatment and the result is a dry concentrate more homogeneous than any other known concentrate drying process. This is particularly good for a flash furnace requiring a bone dry finely divided feed. The spray dryer also features a very short residence time and due to the very quick operation the solids are kept cool thus preventing any risk of fire or explosions on these pyrophoric materials.There are many spray dryers now in operation in the mining industry and one of the latest applications is in South Africa where a spray dryer is treating a copper-nickel platinum concentrate which is, after drying, fed toan electric arc furnace. Experience has shown that the concentrate should contain 4% moisture for the furnace, and this is achieved by drying the concentrate bone dry and then back-mixing with thickener underflow pulp to provide an extremely homogeneous feed to the smelter. As mentioned before, mixing with pulp would be more of an advantage because we would not be evaporating water which would have to be added again afterwards.One of the first spray dryers to go in was at Western Mining Corporation in Kambalda in Western Australia. INTRODUCTION The treatment of colloidal suspensions is a subject of increasing interest in mining and benefication (1). Colloidal suspensions are not readily operated upon by mechanical and physical methods useful with coarse suspensions, such as filtration, thickening, and flotation. This is because colloids are strongly affected by interfacial and interparticle forces that may be large compared with, and resistant to, external forces. The degree and type of interactions between colloids can be modified by small additions of reagents such as coagulants, flocculants, dispersants, and immiscible liquids. These alterations in turn change the properties of the suspension and provide possible opportunities for transforming suspensions to a more favorable condition for a given processing operation. Phosphate slimes are an example of a colloidal system of interest today. In the mining and beneficiation of phosphate rock in Florida, slimes are a waste product. The phosphate ore (called matrix in the industry) is slurrified hydraulically and pumped to a beneficiation plant, where the -150 mesh material is removed by cycloning from the coarser phosphate rock and silica. The resulting -150 mesh slurry, called phosphate slime, is pumped to large impoundments. The solid content of the slime entering the impoundment is around four weight percent, and over 80% of the solids is less than one micron in size. The immediate problems with phosphate slime relate to their disposal (2, 3). The disposal problem is associated with the very large volumes and the poor dewatering characteristics of the slimes. Currently all engineering schools face a common problem, an ever expanding technological base which must be presented to students within a fixed time period. Traditionally the programmes of study taken by engineering students destined for employment within the mineral industry include formal instruction in aspects of management to an extent greater than that presented in other engineering disciplines. Providing an adequate coverage of an expanding technological base within a fixed time span can lead to a reduction in the time available for 'non-technical' subjects, such as 'management'. This situation calls for periodic review of course contents and allocations of time. Following consultation with an Advisory Committee representing the mineral industry, mining research establishments, and kindred teaching institutions, the University of Melbourne has revised its mining programme. "ZINC-LEAD REPLACEMENT deposits straddle the steep-sided valley of Kicking Horse River at a point three miles east of Field, B.c., in Yoho National Park. The Monarch orebodies extend into Mt. Stephen on the south side of the valley, and outcrop at two points, 1,000 and 1,200 feet above the valley floor. The Kicking Horse deposits are in Mt. Field, on the north side of the valley, and they outcrop 200 feet lower.The East Monarch outcrop is said to have been discovered in 1884 during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The larger West Monarch outcrop, 700 feet west of the original discovery, was not reached till 1917 because of its nearly inaccessible location on the cliff face.The Kicking Horse mine was staked in 1906. Little development was done for several decades, and mining was not commenced till 1935.At the East Monarch, mining was commenced soon after location, and several thousand tons of ore were shipped prior to 1912. At this time a gravity concentrator was installed. This was operated till 1924, and a total of 42,000 tons of ore were mined, including about 10,000 tons from the West Monarch. The period from 1928 to 1935 featured flotation milling and the mining of 265,000 tons of ore, mostly from the West Monarch orebody. Intensive exploratory development was carried out in both Monarch and Kicking Horse from 1935 to 1946. Production from both mines in this period totalled 380,000 tons. From 1947 to the time of closure in 1952, considerable new ore was found in both mines and 185,000 tons were milled. Immediate possibilities for finding ore in the Monarch were considered exhausted. Kicking Horse orebodies are known to persist with a low grade of zinc. Total production from the two mines amounts to 842,500 tons grading approximately 7 per cent lead, 10 per cent zinc, and 1.2 ounces per ton silver."

The method is particularly useful for the valuation of early-stage exploration properties. Unfortunately, valuators are sometimes imprecise in distinguishing between joint ventures and other types of transactions.At VALMIN '94, Bob Appleyard1 proposed that, if one ignores the time value of money and the probability that the expenditure commitment would be completed, the formula to calculate the value ($V) of a property owned by Party B at the time of the deal would be:$V =$Ex (100-1%)/1% (Formula I)Where $V is the value of the property2Where $E is the expenditure commitment by Party A, andWhere 1% is the percentage property interest to be earned by party A.At PACRIM '99, Mike Lawrence and Graham Dewar3 referred to this method and suggested that there was an ambiguity in the formula proposed by Appleyard in 1994. The production of bituminous coal in Pennsylvania started a few years after that in Virginia. For forty-five years all the production came from the Pittsburgh bed, and since that time its total output in value has exceeded that of any other single mineral deposit in the world. It has been impossible to separate the outputs of the four counties producing it at that time, as none of it came from Greene County until many years later, and the figures in the first column of Table 49 represent all the coal coming from Allegheny, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland Counties. The years prior to 1790 are grouped on account of space limitations, they were made in the same manner as the later ones. All outputs have been rounded into hundreds, or thousands of tons because their accuracy does not warrant further subdivision. All figures are net tons, and all represent production and not shipments; this distinction in the early days when transportation facilities were scarce meant a great deal. In the period 1820-1835, more coal was used in salt-making in western Pennsylvania than for any other single purpose, but not a ton of such coal was handled by any transport agency. Later the iron industry used large quantities of local coal without shipment, and other instances can be cited. Prior to 1832, the only means of shipment of coal, excepting by wagons, was by the rivers, and this tonnage was larger than is generally believed. In Table 23, all of the available data about production from the Pittsburgh bed have been shown. After 1844 the river shipments above Pittsburgh are accurately reported by the Monongahela Navigation Company, but its figures do not include tonnage loaded on the river below Dam No. 1, nor that brought down Saw Mill Run. Prior to 1844 no tonnage records were kept although the amount moved was considerable. The information about local production, not shipped, whether used domestically or for manufacturing is necessarily incomplete. Column 7, shipments by railroad, river and canal, includes the figures in column 4, and until at least 1857 are quite evidently too low. The figures in column 9 are largely estimates based on the data shown and prior to 1870, and perhaps later, are much more likely to be lower, rather than higher, than the actual ones. This table was prepared over a period of years, and as additional data were found the revisions necessary were almost always upward. Clearfield County was the next producer in the state, shipments-in small amounts going down the Susquehanna River; some were made later via the West Branch Canal. Railroad facilities became available in 1862, and the growth in production increased rapidly and steadily. All available data and the estimated totals are in Table 24. "Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. Cerâmicas argilosas foram processadas com adição de até 30% em peso de resíduos de pedra ornamental e queimadas a 900, 950, 1000 e 1050°C. Esta adição contribuiu para ajustar a plasticidade do corpo da argila e aumentar a densidade seca aparente, que ocasiona um empacotamento mais elevado das partículas. A cerâmica adicionada diminuiu sua retração linear com a quantidade de resíduos e evita assim alterações dimensionais excessivas nos produtos finais. Outra vantagem foi a diminuição na absorção de água com resíduos adicionados. As resistências à flexão e à compressão sofreram uma diminuição associada à adição de resíduos. Isto foi atribuído à grande quantidade de quartzo nos resíduos, que gera rachaduras e enfraquece o produto final. No entanto, até 30% em peso de adição a resistência mecânica, de acordo com a norma ASTM, é ainda satisfatória para utilização como cerâmica de pavimentação.

Provide the mining industry with a method for determining the gas content of ore bodies and associated strata for use in mine planning, Approach Samples of various rock types are collected and tested to determine gas content in conjunction with sample size, the collection method (i.e. whether the sample was collected from a core sample or by hand) mine gas emission, and the geologic location from which the sample was taken, such as near a fault, outburst area, or other geologic anomaly. How It Works Two methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the gas contents of rock samples. The first method developed involved dissolving minerals to measure gas emission. This method, however, can only be used with soluble minerals. A second method, therefore, was developed for use with insoluble minerals. With this method, the sample is crushed in a ball mill. Although the dissolution method is faster and more accurate to use, the crushing method is also advantageous because its use can more closely approximate a mining situation; the sample is crushed as in mining and the amount of gas released relates to the amount of gas that would be released during a mining operation. The dissolution method is applied to soluble minerals, such as rock, salt, or trona, in a sealed chamber. Gases released during dissolution are collected for analysis by gas chromatography. One advantage in using the dissolution method is that the test apparatus is relatively inexpensive. In addition, test can be performed at any scale, from single crystal samples to a solution mining operation.

It evaluates the fines generated in coal submitted to dynamic loading stresses in an impact stamp mortar. THE introduction of a substitutional alloying element, X, appreciably complicates calculation of the thermodynamics of the formation of proeutectoid ferrite from austenite. As noted in the preceding paper,' the positional entropy of the interstitial species is the principal component of the free energy of an interstitial solid solution with which theory has so far been able to deal. One would expect, however, that other components of the free energy of this type of solid solution may be significantly altered by the addition of a substitutional alloying element. Even if the assumptions are made, by analogy to the case of Fe-C alloys,' that changes in the positional entropy of carbon represent a significant part of the thermodynamic effects of an alloying element, and that the remaining effects can be taken into account by fitting the equations developed on this basis to experimental data on Fe-C-X phase diagrams or on the activities of carbon in alloyed austenite and ferrite, the experimental information available on either of these quantities is not yet sufficiently accurate or extensive, respectively, to make such an approach useful. An attempt made by Zener on the former basis to explain the effects of alloying elements on the thermodynamics of Fe-C alloys in terms of a temperature-independent "free-energy change" (actually enthalpy hane') required to transfer 1 mole of an alloying element from austenite to ferrite, in which the "free-energy change" was determined by fitting the theoretical relationships developed to Fe-C-X phase diagrams, thus proved inadequate in part because of deficiencies in the available ternary-phase-diagram data.= Other difficulties of a more fundamental nature, however, also indicated the desirability of a different approach to the problem.3y4y6 zener6 subsequently proposed that the free-energy change associated with y — a transformation in pure iron can be decomposed into magnetic and nonmagnetic components. Alloying elements were assumed to affect those components separately. One parameter was used to describe the quantitative effect exerted on each component. These parameters were evaluated from Ms (martensite-start) temperature data and from other experimental information usually either readily available or measurable with acceptable accuracy. Zener applied this treatment only to the calculation of Fe-X phase diagrams in which X is a ferrite-stabilizing element. In the present study, this treatment is extended to include austenite-stabilizing elements, and then combined with treatments previously considered for Fe-C alloys1 to permit calculation of the thermodynamic quantities of interest in the austenite - proeutectoid ferrite transformation in Fe-C-X alloys, where a number of representative, and commonly used alloying elements are chosen for X, including Si, Mn, Co, Mo, Al, Cr, and Cu. The results are used to explain important features of the partition of alloying elements between austenite and proeutectoid ferrite, as reported in a companion paper7 on the basis of electron-probe analysis, and to provide some additional understanding of the influence of alloying elements upon the kinetics of nucleation and growth of proeutectoid ferrite. Portions of this treatment6 have been clarified in the course of a review by Kaufman and Cohen.3 The consolidated summary of these developments with which this section is begun provides a basis for further clarification of the treatment, from which extension to include austenite- as well as ferrite-stabilizing elements is a natural consequence. The development of roasting technology for the oxidation of sulfides in refractory gold ores is discussed. Case studies covering operations dating from the mid-1930's to the present day are used to illustrate this development. The roasting of ores and concentrates is reviewed and various gas cleaning flowsheets are discussed with particular reference to environmental requirements. A 328 m, 2.4 m diameter raise-bored shaft has been equipped with a modular ladderway system to provide a second means of egress from Aberfoyle's Hellyer Mine in Tasmania. The modular ladderway consists of platforms, ladders and service pipes assembled at the surface and progressively lowered down the shaft. This system provides a rapid, safe and economical non-entry approach to equipping a shaft. The modular construction and single suspension allows for future extension or for reuse in another shaft.

Keywords: Copper, Taphole, Flow Instability. ?Blister spitting? is a flow irregularity where the molten blister copper stream ? or part thereof ? sprays from the taphole exit rather than following a regular flow profile to the collection box. As well as being a general ?housekeeping? issue, the unpredictable nature of the flow is a threat to operator safety. Also, the aggressive flow pattern may contribute to the mechanical wear of the taphole refractory, compromising the integrity of the taphole. This paper brings together a collection of first-hand observations and reports from process personnel, and suggests some theories as to the causes of blister spitting.

Research into cemented rock fill at Mount Isa Mines Limited since 1992 is described. The key mechanisms controlling segregation during stope filling with cemented rock fill are described and include the gravity flow mechanism which is described in detail. Examples are provided to demonstrate these mechanisms. Comparisons are made between Mount Isa Mines' cemented rock fill and slurry-based cemented rock fills. Recent backfill stability modelling using a three-dimensional finite clement program is described.
