En la presente investigación busca controlar la dilución del mineral realizando una explotación del tajo con un ancho de minado adecuado (0.6 m) y la selectividad de mineral económico y no económico utilizando el método minado corte y relleno ascendente realizando un análisis comparativo de la evaluación de malla de perforación actual y la evaluación de mallas de perforación nuevas, Tipo 2-1 y Tipo Zig-Zag, donde en esta propuesta se ha obtenido favorables resultados con la malla de perforación implementada puesto que se observa una reducción en el costo de voladura y costo de sostenimiento además de lograr la reducción del porcentaje de dilución.

The gravity magnitudes obtained by means of observations with the Eötvös balance in the field are necessarily resultant or total effects due to all abnormalities of mass distribution, including even the effects due to the ellipticity and rotational motion of the whole earth. Since the object of the survey is to isolate the effects which arise solely from some particular subterranean feature, and to deduce therefrom the configuration and extent of this feature, the first step is to eliminate from the observed effects all those due to "disturbing" (i. e., unwanted) features, whether above or below the surface of the ground. The disturbing features have different characteristics, according to their situation relative to the center of the balance and to the horizontal plane through the foot of the balance, or station point; this diversity was recognized by Eotvos, who divided the total effects into so-called Normal, Terrain, Topographical, Cartographical and Subterranean effects. This classification has been adhered to by most subsequent investigators, but the writer prefers to employ the term "three-dimensional," which really indicates the essential character of the class of effect known as "Subterranean," at any rate from the standpoint of the computer of effects. Before disturbing effects can be eliminated, the features must be measured up or surveyed, whether by topographical, mining, or boring methods, and then the effects of each feature calculated and subtracted from the total observed effects. After this the problem of interpreting the residual effects will itself necessitate the computation of the assumed feature, or even a series of trial features. The task of computing gravity effects is therefore of great importance. In the early work, by Eötvös himself, the computation practically ceased when the terrain and topographical effects had been calculated, but later surveys have demanded an ever-increasing extension in the technique of computation. The continuous increase in energy costs has made it necessary to consider a broader use of belt conveyors for the transportation of material from the mine pit to the processing plant. Hard rock has to be crushed before it can be moved by belt conveyors. Systems are in the planning stage for mining hard rock, such as copper and iron ore, by using high-capacity, mobile, or semi-portable crushers. The mobile crusher is located in the pit, and the crushed material is transported by energy-efficient, shiftable belt conveyors out of the pit.

Por lo cual, las empresas mineras preveen un programa basado en el desarrollo de la técnica de Gestión de Riesgos, que les permita un control en la seguridad del proceso. En este sentido, el presente texto desarrolla una técnica que identifica los diferentes factores que intervienen en los riesgos principales a través de los riesgos asociados; es decir, cuáles son esos riesgos asociados que influyen negativamente en cada una de las tareas que puedan causar accidentes.

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1944 was slightly more than 9500 bbl., about 1300 bbl. more than 1943. Approximately 8000 bbl. was produced from the "Mississippi lime" in Scott and Morgan Counties. Some half dozen wells in Clay, Pickett, and Fentress Counties, pumped intermittently, produced about 1500 bbl. This production is from rocks of Ordovician age ranging in depth from less than 500 ft. to approximately 1000 ft. Natural gas was marketed from wells in Morgan and Fentress Counties for consumption in the Sunbright and Jamestown areas, respectively. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table I. Developments There were 20 completions during 1944 totaling 19,615 ft., nearly twice as much as in 1943. One well was drilling on Dec. 31, 1944. Of the 20 completions, one was a small oil well soon abandoned. Three gas wells were completed which are used locally. The completions are listed in Table 2. The distribution of tests according to physiographic divisions is given in Table 3. Cumberland Plateau There were five completions in the northern part of Cumberland Plateau. One was a small gas well in the Cooper pool 3 miles west of Oneida, but an attempt to extend the pool to the south resulted in a dry hole. The most active area in the state during 1944 was the northern Cumherland Plateau, especially in Cumberland, Morgan, and Scott Counties. Several blocks, aggregating more than 500,000 acres, were assembled and leasing was continuing in the early part of 1945. Surface work has been, or is being, carried on by at least four companies. While in an area of past oil and gas production from the "Mississippi lime," the principal interest appears to be in the essentially unexplored pre-Mississippian possibilities. The Knox dolomite group of Cambro-Ordovician age is receiving some attention as a possible reservoir. As the year closed one well was drilling on a surface structure near Lantana, 6 miles southwest of Cross-ville. This test will be drilled into the upper part of the Knox. Late in 1944, it was planned to lay a gas line from northern Morgan County to Oneida in Scott County, a distance of approximately 20 miles. The U.S. Department of Energy Pittsburgh Research Center2 conducted experiments with mine conveyor belt samples in a 20-L furnace and in a laboratory fire tunnel to measure and compare the major toxic gas concentrations evolved during the combustion of the materials. The toxic gas concentrations, measured simultaneously through a multiport sampling device and treated as yield values, included hydrogen chloride (HO), hydrogen cyanide (HeN), oxides of nitrogen (NO, treated as NO), and carbon monoxide (CO). The data obtained from the two experimental systems were in good agreement. Correlations were developed for the toxic gas yields as a function of the percentage of chlorine (for HO gas), nitrogen (for HCN and NO, gases), and carbon (for CO gas) contained in the original materials. The toxic gas yields were also used to calculate a toxicity index (TI) parameter to assess the potential gas toxicity of belt materials during a fire. Furthermore, the TI and the mass loss burning rate values were used to calculate a toxicity hazard (TH) parameter to estimate the toxic gas hazard produced by a burning belt in a ventilated system. Results show that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts released higher HC1 concentrations because of the higher chlorine content; styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) belts released higher CO, HCN, and NOz concentrations because of the higher carbon and nitrogen contents. The TI's, however, were greater for the PVC belts due primarily to the higher levels of HC1 produced. The fire tunnel data indicate that the SBR belts can bum with higher mass loss rates than the PVC belts, resulting in a potentially higher toxic hazard (higher TH values) even though their TI values were lower than those of the PVC belts.

Four, general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part off the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremy1 and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed' the presence of large quantities of organic' sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Drown5

The new technological process developed is by means of thermal plasma arc smelting to obtain high grade Ni matte directly from Ni-Cu concentrates containing 6-7% nickel and 3-8% sulfur. In comparising with conventional smelting and converting processes the plasma arc smelting process has many advantages over conventional processes, such as lower energy consumption, lower capital investment and free from SO, pollution by transforming the sulfides into elemental sulfur with microwave irradiation under controlled oxygen potential, moreover, the process is simple and easily controlled due to less magnetite troubles in the operation. Therefore, this new technological process can be used as an alternative way to conventional process for Ni-Cu concentrate smelting. The main economical technical index is summarized in Tabal 1. It has been demonstrated in previous work1'2 that wetting of aluminum alloys by liquid mercury can cause fracture to occur with substantial suppression of prior plastic flow. This has been interpreted as the action of a critical liquid species in reducing the cohesive strength of a stressed solid at sites of potential crack nucleation. In this way the critical transverse stress for fracture nucleation is reached at much lower stresses than is normally the case. The stresses for both fracture nucleation and fracture propagation are depressed by the same mechanism. In so doing the plastic-energy component of fracture energy is reduced to a level which is of the same order of magnitude as the surface, interfacial, or cleavage energy. Recent work2 has illustrated the influence of dispersed precipitates, cold work, and combinations of these on brittle fracture associated with plastic strains of the microyield order of magnitude. This has been rationalized in terms of the contribution of internal microstress fields to the stress magnifications at points of obstruction of active slip bands in a stressed metal. The presently reported studies on an Al-4-1/2 pct Mg alloy amplify this subject by introducing thermal-mechanical conditions which can produce strain aging. As amply demonstrated by Phillips, Swain, and borall, the tensile behavior of aluminum alloys containing magnesium reveals a yield-point elongation and successive discontinuous elongations over the whole plastic-strain range. This gives a stepped or serrated character to the stress-strain diagram. The yield-point elongation is not temperature-dependent. On the other hand, the discontinuous extensions in the plastic-strain range are gradually suppressed by lower temperatures of testing. At -78"C, only the yield-point elongation persists. The yield-point elongation itself can be suppressed by rapid quenching to room temperature from an annealing temperature of 500°C. The argument presented by Phillips et 1. and Cottre114 is that the yield-point elongation derives from surmounting at a critical stress the restraint to slip by grain boundaries which have been reinforced by appreciable magnesium-atom segregation. The serrated character of the plastic-strain range is the result of rapid strain aging during the test. This is made possible by the inevitable proximity of magnesium atoms to any dislocation line. In the Al-4-1/2 pct Mg alloy there is one magnesium atom for every twenty-two aluminum atoms and, with a coordination number of 12, a magnesium atom is on the average only about two atomic distances from any given lattice site. Rapid strain aging is therefore a reasonable expectation. A study of mercury embrittlement of the Al-4-1/2 pct Mg alloy (commercial designation 5083) provides an opportunity to relate the interplay of grain size, grain boundary restraint to slip and strain aging in the brittle-fracture process. One lot of commercial sheet material of 0.125-in. thickness was used for all of the tests. The specimen shape and test procedures used were the same as those described in a previous publication.2 A range of grain sizes between 0.0057 and 0.0125 mm was produced by various combinations of plastic prestrain and annealing. The coarsest grain was somewhat elongated in shape. In this case the measurement was taken in the direction transverse to the axis of tension as more meaningful to a brittle-fracture process. In the annealed condition, specimens wetted with mercury failed with zero permanent elongation at stresses slightly below the normal yield point, i.e., stresses at 0.05 to 0.2 pct strain. Since this occurs before yield-point elongation can begin, fracture derives from slip contained within individual grains and restrained from propagating across grain boundaries. No significant difference in wetted fracture stress was observed between specimens which had been water-quenched or furnace-cooled from the annealing temperatures. The mechanical response of closed-cell aluminium metallic foams subjected to low and high strain-rate loading has been investigated. A set of quasi-static and dynamic (shock) compressive tests have been conducted on closed-cell aluminium foams (CYMAT) with densities of 0.50 and 0.30 g/cc. Post-mortem characterization via optical microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was performed on pristine and deformed specimens to elucidate the dominant deformation mechanisms in these materials. The combination of these techniques allowed for the assessment of critical deformation parameters such as changes in cell geometry and morphology, as well as microstructural evolution and deformation of the aluminium cellular network. These findings aim to aid in the design and development of optimized material structures for impact and blast protection.

One of the current challenges for iron ore producers is the ability to respond to changes in ROM stockpile specifications in a quick and cost-efficient manner. The decision-making process to respond to such changes is normally associated with grade-control and short-term mine planning activities, from where new operating instructions to the mine are provided. Mines are under increasing pressure from changes in the industry, such as a scarcity of skilled staff; a higher turnover of skilled employees and tighter product specifications. The quality of operational activities easily suffers as a result of these pressures. The technology that supports operational activities is often poorly implemented, which results in systems being unsustainable and poorly understood by the organisation. All successful technology implementations rely on the people, processes and technologies involved being well understood. Because of the complex nature of mining, the processes that underpin mine planning, scheduling and operational control are often not well defined. This results in activities undertaken by individual departments being poorly integrated. Datamine has developed a set of tools and methods for decomposing; capturing and documenting processes and ensuring those are embodied in implemented solutions. A case study of such a solution is the GEROS planning system, which has been successfully implemented at CVRDÆs Southern Iron Ore System, in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Heavy mineral deposits often contain relatively high levels of radioactive elements (thorium and uranium in particular).It is difficult to obtain clean separation of ilmenite and monazite (the main impurity mineral containing radioactive elements), and physical intergrowths of the two minerals are, in fact, not uncommon. As a result, ilmenite concentrates obtained from such deposits often contain high levels of thorium and uranium. Because of the large negative free energies of formation of ThO2and U3O8boththorium and uranium report to the slag during smelting and if an ilmenite concentrate contaminated with monazite is used to make high titania slag, the concentrations of these elements in the slag end up about 40% higher than in the ilmenite feed. Previous work, patented by RGC Mineral Sands Limited, and subsequently confirmed by Mintek, showed that radioactivity may be reduced by roasting an ilmenite concentrate with borax at 1000°C to 1100°C and leaching it with hydrochloric acid1. It is evident that the cost of an ilmenite roast/leach process will be high and there may be economic benefits in removing the radioactive elements from the slag instead (the volume of slag to be treated is smaller than the volume of ilmenite feed). To remove radioactive elements from the slag it is necessary to know how these elements occur in the slag. Inother words, the distribution of uranium and thorium between the various oxide, silicate and metallic phases in high titania slag must be determined. Once the deportment of thorium and uranium between the various phases ha sbeen determined, an appropriate process for slag purification can be developed. Test samples High-titania slag was prepared in a pilot-scale DC furnace from ilmenite concentrates with different levels of uranium and thorium. Subsequently, ten slag samples representing a range of compositions were selected for bulk chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro-analysis. The samples were crushed to a maximum particle size of 1 mm and from each sample a 20-kg batch was riffled out for analysis. Bulk chemical composition Chemical compositions of the samples selected for test work are given in Table I. TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, MnO, FeO and V2O5were analysed by ICP-OES, Na2O, CaO andCr2O3by atomic absorption spectroscopy and U and Th by XRF (the XRF detection limit for U and Th was around 4 ppm). The ?B? series has a higher silica content than the others as a result of small silica additions that were made during smelting. All samples have elevated alumina levels as a result of furnace refractory contamination during smelting. As expected, there is an inverse relationship between the concentrations of TiO2and FeO in the samples (Figure 1).The TiO2and FeO levels are similar to the levels found in industrial slags2. Extreme conditions of reduction under which reduction of more ?refractory? oxides (e.g., chromia, magnesia, silica, alumina and even urania and thoria) might take place were not explored in the study. Note that BB1and BBB1 contain more than 7% combined silica and alumina (SiO2as a flux addition during smelting, and Al2O3from refractory contamination) and they do not fall on the general trend defined by the other samples. The U and Th concentrations of sample E2 is noteworthy. In the preparation of slag E2, monazite concentrate was added to the ilmenite to increase the concentrations of radioactive elements in the slag. This was done primarily to facilitate the detection of Th and U during the phase chemical characterization of the slag. It may surprise the learned metallurgists who read this paper to learn that, by a recent discovery, nails of good quality can be made at one operation, directly from the ore, at the rate of, say, sixty per minute for each operator. It should be stated, however, that the raw material referred to does not answer strictly the ordinary assayer's definition of' an ore. It is found, in strata of various thickness, in Harlem, N. Y., and other localities where the débris from restaurants and from sheet-metal factories of various kinds has been dumped. In other words, it is old and new tin-scrap—one of the few substances which this generation, mainly occupied in exhausting the accumulated resources of the past, seems to have laid up, by way of atonement, for the benefit of posterity. In speaking of this material as ore, we are simply looking forward, prophetically, to the time when our descendants may dig it. up and write learned papers for the American Institute of Mining Engineers upon the best methods of assaying and smelting it. At least such has seemed to be its destiny hitherto. It may fairly be said that the many attempts which have been made to utilize it by separating, through chemical or electrolytical processes, its two valuable constituents, metallic tin and first-class wroughtiron, have failed, either technicaljy or commercially. The reasons fur such failure need not here be discussed: Either the separation has been incomplete, the iron still retaining enough tin to spoil it for the sinking-fire, or other use short of re-melting (perhaps even for that), or the manipulations of the process have been too expensive to make its results profitable—or both. Meanwhile the great tin-scrap deposits have gone on growing faster than any other strata of our Post-Tertiary, Psychical Era; given up by metallurgists, not yet attacked by geologists, and explored only by that mining engineer of the transitional period, Gulielmus Caper. Before leaving these heaps of tin-scrap, however, to become mere mineral deposits for future ages, it may be well to consider a novel plan for their immediate utilization—novel, not only in its means, but in its principle. It is a general expectancy that in most of the construction and renovation project, the contractor is going to hand over the as-built documents to the owner or the facility management team at the completion of the project. The main challenge for the handover process is to ensure the completeness of the captured building information and the accuracy of it in terms of how well it represents the reality. Building information models (BIMs) can be used as an information repository to store and deliver as-built information. However, due to changes made in the construction and renovation phases and errors made in the design and modeling phases, discrepancies can exist between BIMs created in the design phase (asdesigned BIMs) and actual building conditions. Laser scanning technology is able to efficiently capture accurate geometric information, which provides an opportunity to identify and quantify discrepancies and update as-designed BIMs into as-built BIMs. This paper presents a case study, within which the asdesigned BIM of a newly renovated research lab was updated into an as-built BIM using laser scanned data captured in the renovation phase. This paper introduces the challenges associated with the updating process for the as-designed BIM. In order to address these challenges, this paper introduces a framework that supports the update of an as-designed BIM by incorporating point clouds captured by the progressive laser scans.

The use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material must be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, granulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, but to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits. Methods of Placing Sand Sand may be transported and placed underground by several methods, which may be classified as follows: 1. By Hand.—The sand, which must be comparatively dry, is taken down the shaft in cars on cages and is distributed to its destination in these cars, or it is dumped down raises and is drawn off and distributed by means of cars, wheelbarrows or scrapers.

Efficient and re1iable methods of fragmentation through blasting have been sought ever since the introduction of black powder in mining operations, but the pace of investigation became faster with the discovery of nitroglycerine. The development of modern measuring instruments and the need to blast more rock with the least damage has made the study of blasting mechanics and its application more important, particularly since the oil embargo. Investigations into the practical approach evolved by Daws (1909) and the work done to make it more useful is discussed. The work of several investigators is touched upon with particular reference to the development of computer programs to simulate and optimize blasting operations.

"Operating heavy equipment in Labrador, where the winters are 8 months long and the temperature frequently drops below -40°F (-40°C) for days and sometimes weeks presents unique problems in both the operation and maintenance junctions. Winterization programs must be well designed and implemented at the proper time. These programs must include the proper selection of fuel oil, engine oil, hydraulic oils, greases, cooling system fluids, etc. More often than not, modifications have to be made to the original equipment in order that it can be operated safely and economically in the Canadian North. Manufacturers usually design equipment for a less harsh environment and the user makes adaptations by trial and error.Operators have to be trained for the proper operation on ice- and snow-covered roads in an open-pit mine. Special emphasis must be put on haulage road conditions. In this paper, the authors will cover some specific maintenance procedures, equipment modifications and operator training problems experienced by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in its open-pit operation in Labrador.IntroductionT he Iron Ore Company of Canada is engaged in open-pit mining , concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore. Merchants perform a number of functions in the copper market. As a major distribution arm of the copper industry, they secure scrap and other copper bearing materials for processing into usable refined shapes. These are ultimately sold to fabricators. Merchants ' hedging and arbitrage activities help keep values in proper relationship from product to product or region to region. Through these switching and trading operations, they optimize the flow of copper from mine to consumer. And finally, merchants act as a repository for copper units during times of surplus and a stockpile from which to draw during tines of shortage.

With the exception of the United States and Russia, none of the leading world powers have within their boundaries the oil supplies needed to meet present peace-time requirements, and even in regard to the United States it is admitted by competent observers that the known oil reserves within the country are inadequate to meet demands for more than a comparatively few years. It follows, therefore, that the transportation of petroleum—almost entirely by tank steamers—from foreign fields to the main consuming centers is one of the most important factors affecting the present and future development of the oil industry. The world-wide distribution of petroleum is affected by numerous factors of which international politics is not the least important. The assurance of an ample supply of petroleum—one of the most essential munitions of war—is of paramount importance particularly to those countries subjected to the rivalries of powerful neighbors. And paralleling the importance of the control of an ample supply is that of its safe transportation from the fields to the consuming centers. To illustrate: France is dependent almost entirely on foreign sources for its petroleum requirements estimated at close to 100,000 bbl. daily, and in order to control such a supply after the World War it acquired an interest in the Iraq oil fields. Lately it has undertaken the construction of a pipe line from these fields to the Mediterranean seaboard in Syria with the expectation that late in 1934 these fields will supply between 30 and 40 per cent of the country's requirements. It should be noted, however, that the availability of this supply is entirely dependent on the safe operation in the Mediterranean at all times of an adequate fleet of tank steamers. Thus, in order to transport 40,000 bbl. daily, it will be necessary for one 10,000-ton tanker to leave Tripoli, the Syrian port, say for Marseille, every other day throughout the year while to meet the entire present peace requirements of France from the Iraq fields, a fleet of some 30 such tankers must be kept in continuous operation between Tripoli and Marseille.

In the time it takes you to read this sentence, you'll be "zapped" by about 40 cosmic rays. Though harmless, their existence is being probed by a team of Texas A&M University physicists. What's most unusual about the research project is the design and location of the telescope required to detect the particles-it's made of fluorescent light tubes and is 457 m (1500 ft) underground at United Salt Corp.'s mine in Hockley, Texas, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Texas A&M's College Station campus. Cosmic rays are actually particles smaller than atoms traveling at extremely high speeds. Scientists believe their source is the same as that of starlight, and that these primary particles entering the earth's atmosphere create secondary particles in collisions with oxygen and nitrogen atoms.
