Two principal types of the hydrothermal fields in Atlantic - axial and off-axis - could be established based on their structural setting in the rift zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) (Figure1). The first (axial) type is represented by five high- and three low-temperature hydrothermal sites (Table 1). All of these fields are connected with young axial effusive volcanism and related to large linear volcanic ridges or central volcanoes at the inner floor of the rift valley. The hydrothermal activity here is controlled by the intersection between longitudinal magma feeding faults and transverse weakened zones characterized by high permeability. [ ] The hydrothermal sites of the second (off-axis) type (such as Rainbow, TAG, 24°30?N, Logatchev, newly discovered 13°N (Figure 2) and possibly 16°48?N sites) are related to large tectonic dislocations forming marginal scarps of the rift valley as well as transverse discontinuities.

AT the December Board meeting, the report of the William Lawrence Saunders Medal Committee, recommending the award of the medal to John Hays Hammond, was received and unanimously approved. The citation is: "For his notable work as an engineer and developer of mines at home and abroad, his industrial leadership and his public services." The medal will be presented as usual during the meeting in February, presumably at the annual dinner at the Waldorf, on Feb. 20. The other medals to be given on the same occasion are the James Douglas, which goes to Paul D. Merica, and the Robert W. Hunt, which is awarded this year to Edgar C. Bain, as already announced. This will be the third award made of the Saunders Medal for "Achievement in Mining," previous recipients having been David W. Brunton in 1927, and Herbert Hoover in 1928. The list is a distinguished one and Mr. Hammond's name is appropriately included. His career is so widely known that it is not necessary to repeat the account, published in MINING AND METALLURGY last April.

Report of President The important fact of the year 1916 is that on July 25 contracts were executed by which the American Society of Civil Engineers because an additional Founder Society and arranged to make its permanent home in our building. The contracts provide for the construction of three additional stories to the building, the American Society to pay the cost tip to $250,000, this being considered equivalent to what each other Founder Society had contributed, the American Society to participate in the original Carnegie gift and have an equal share in the property with each other Founder society. The construction of the addition to the building is under way, $62,525.04 having been expended thereon in 1916. It has been found that, clue to war conditions and the advanced price of materials, the cost of the addition will be $300,000. The founder societies have been requested to assume the extra $50,000, one quarter each. This work is in charge of a Building Committee consisting of H. H. Barnes, Jr., Chairman, E. G. Spilsbury, Charles Warren Hunt and Charles F. Rand. At the request of the Founder Societies, important alterations were made in the lecture halls on the fifth floor of the building to make the same suitable for social functions of the societies. The cost, $6,642.08, was advanced by the United Engineering Society but is to be paid eventually by the Founders. The Library of the civil Engineers is being merged with the Library of the United Engineering. Society and the other founder societies. At the present time the membership of the four founder societies is 29,000 and of associate societies 23,000, so that a total of 52,000 engineers now have their headquarters in our building. The value of the real estate now owned by this Society is $1,647,171.16. This sum will be increased at the end of 1917 by the amount of the cost of the addition to the building.

Investigations of the Zr-Pt system, by metallography, incipient melting, and X-ray diffraction, determined the phase relationshifis from 0 to 50 at. pct Pt. Phase fields in the Pt-~ich region were outlined, and three intermetallics (ZrPt, Zr2Pt, and ZrPtd were located. A eutectic between Zr and Zr2Pt, and a eutectoid veaction between Zr and a Zr + Zr2Pt, were established. The maximum solubility of Pt in P Zr was approximately 13.5 wt pct, as opposed to less than 1 wt pct solubility in a Zr. EARLIER work on the Zr-Pt system was limited to an X-ray study on the intermetallic compound, ZrPt3, by H. J. Wallbaum,1 It was reported that ZrPt3 existed at 86.52 wt pct Pt, and had a hexagonal structure, isomorphous with TiNi3. Wallbaum's data revealed the following structural particulars: a = 5.633A, c = 9.21A, and c/a = 1.635A. Other studies allied to Zr-Pt alloys concerned only 1) Pt-rich alloys (0.05 to 5.0 pct Zr) for corrosion resistance,2 2) a Zr-base alloy with 5 pct Pt and 0.124 pct C for oxidation resistance,3 and 3) electroclad-ding of Zr with Pt for in-pile corrosion resistance of Zr to uranyl sulphate. 4 Metallographic, incipient melting, and X-ray diffraction techniques were applied to accurately resolve the phase relationships in the 0 to 50 at. pct (68.2 wt pct) Pt region, and to outline the phase fields in the Pt-rich area. Three intermediate phases: Zr2Pt, ZrPt, and ZrPt3, were also established by the same methods. PROCEDURE Melting stock for this program was of the highest purity obtainable. The Zr was iodide crystal bar with a low hafnium content of about 0.05 wt pct (Westinghouse "Grade 3"). The as-received Zr was treated to remove the surface film of corrosion product that resulted from a standard autoclave grade designation test. IT has been observed by a number of investigators that under certain conditions metals freeze into an aggregate of small hexagonal strands, parallel to one another and with their axes approximately in the direction of growth.'" This structure has been termed "cellular structure" and is explained in various ways by different workers, notably by Rutter and Chalmers." These investigators attribute the phenomenon to the presence of minute quantities of solute atoms which induce constitutional supercooling. However, if this is true, observations of the cellular structure in extremely pure substances, like frozen distilled water' and germanium of less than 0.0001 atomic pct metallic solute,' are difficult to comprehend. The purpose of this communication is to describe several observations made of the prismatic structure in zinc of 99.99 pct purity. Zinc single and bicrystals grown in a constant gradient electrical resistance furnace exhibit the cellular structure after etching in 15 pct HC1. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) It is noticed that the hexagonal substructure sometimes continues unbroken across the bicrystalline grain boundary.

The final tables of this chapter, tables 25-50, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the Area Reports: International Volume of the Minerals Yearbook and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-90 editions. Continuing the practice started in 1989, a column has been included in each of these tables providing a 5-year average for 1987-91, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continued to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1991. This group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from? 1st to 19th in 1983 terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93 % of the estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key downstream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil-is included because of their significance as products.

Molecular design plays an important role in development of new flotation reagents. Group electronegativity calculation is a main method of molecular design. It is commonly used in calculating the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance of reagents, particularly in designing chain length of flotation reagents for located minerals. But there is a limit to group electronegativity method. The method can only apply to those of [Ø]known straight-chain compounds ([Ø] is the hydrophobic energy of each -CH2- , determined by experiment). In this Paper, we propose another new calculation method: fragment method of flotation reagent. The method could be used as a supplement of group electronegativity method to design and calculate flotation reagents without any limitation. With the fragment method, we can calculate the hydrophilic-hydrophobic performance of any known or unknown reagents including those complicate structure compounds such as cyclic, branch, heterocyclic and so on by summing the appropriate structural elements (fragment). The principle, calculation stages and some results of designing new-type flotation reagents by fragment method are presented in this paper.

Today I would like to share with you some blasting practices used in the thick coal seam mines of Northeastern Wyoming. I will begin by giving you a general overview of a thick seam coal operation at The Carter Mining Company's Rawhide Mine. I will then discuss the blasting procedures used at this operation. The Rawhide Mine is one of 13 mines operating in the Eastern Powder River Basin of Northeastern Wyoming. Approximately 23 billion tons of recoverable coal lies in the Powder River Basin. The Rawhide Mine is currently producing approximately 8 million tons per year. Rawhide is the 9th largest coal mine in the United States according to 1982 production. We also received the 1982 Sentinels of Safety Award for being the safest surface coal mine in the United States. Rawhide's permitted capacity is 24 million tons.

The activities of Outokumpu Oy in the mining industry span all branches from prospecting to the production of refined metals and the manufacture of semifinished products. Products include copper, zinc, mercury, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, sulfur, gold, silver, iron ore, stainless steel, selenium, ferrochromium, lead and chromium concentrates, as well as chromite foundry sand. In addition, the activities of Outokumpu Oy extend to development and production of instruments, planning of industrial projects and instrumentation as well as the manufacture of specialized machines for ore concentration. The company now operates ten mines, eight of which are underground and all of which are in sulfide deposits except one. The fully automated monitoring and control of underground mine ventilation at the Pyhasalmi mine are an important technological contribution to the industry. Development work on the ventilation control was started in 1969, and since May 1973 it has operated in a fully automated computer-controlled mode. The Pyhasalmi mine has been in production since 1962, having begun as an open-pit operation. Development of underground mining began in 1967. The present annual production is one million tons all from underground mining. The underground mine is equipped with a main shaft and an auxiliary shaft, and two raises for ventilation. There is also a rampway from the surface to a depth of 500 m. The main shaft is for ore hoisting and the auxiliary shaft is used for waste-rock hoisting and for downcast ventilation. One of the raises is for downcast ventilation and the other is for upcast ventilation. The mining methods employed at Pyhasalmi are sublevel stoping with backfill, sublevel caving, and sublevel shrinkage stoping. Copper and zinc concentrates are produced. The Pyhasalmi mine is highly mechanized with about 4000 installed diesel horsepower underground. The maximum capacity of fresh air is 150 m3/s.

The conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small, isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may not be able to adopt the practice of large mines because of necessary capital expenditures for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and . shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has not yet been developed. Conventional Drill Bit in Use That drilling speed increases as the bit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests carried out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8-in. steel show that when bit sizes are reduced from I½ in., I3/8 in., and I3/16 in-; to I3/8 in., I1/4 in.., and I1/8 in., respectively, the volume of the hole is I 5 per cent less and the drilling speed 49 per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3 in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to I,826 in., a difference of o.25I in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and 14° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr charac1erist.i~~) by some mines4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and 14° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as call be forged economically. A series of batch flotation tests was performed on chalcopyrite-quartzite, pyrrhotite-quartzite, and on chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-quartzite mixtures. Pulp potential measurements in the flotation tests of single sulfide minerals indicated that each sulfide mineral had its own optimum potential range for flotation. When these results were used to select the potential ranges for the separation of the two minerals from their mixture, their flotation responses changed and the selectivity of separation was adversely affected. A possible mechanism involving surface alteration through galvanic interaction is discussed. A method to improve the selectivity of flotation separation was proposed.

Titanium dioxide is extracted from titaniferous ores by chloride and sulfate processes. These two processes produce wastes in the forms of iron chloride, iron sulfate and rare earth oxides gangue, each of which has to go through a further treatment before it can be disposed safely, which may be expensive. The shortage of high-grade ores is also making the two conventional processes less efficient. In view of the above mentioned problems, an alternate beneficiation process of roasting titaniferous ores with soda ash is discussed. The advantage of this process is that, there is no production of wastes. The impurities present in the ore can be selectively separated after the roasting process. The roasting of titaniferous ores with soda ash was carried out between temperatures of 873K and1173K for several hours. The roasting process resulted in the formation of complex alkali compounds and various sodium titanate compounds, depending on the Na2CO3to ore ratio. The phases formed after roasting were characterized using the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray florescence (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The phase equilibria in the Na-Ti-O system are evaluated and compared with the phases obtained after the roasting process. The effects of temperature and the proportion of sodium carbonate on titaniferous ores are also discussed. From the experimental data, the overall reaction kinetics and phases formed were analyzed to ascertain the mechanism of overall reaction and the rate-limiting steps.

Since 1982, the US Bureau of Mines has investigated improvements in protection for operators of thin seam shuttle cars. Due to working height restrictions in thin seam mines (=1.22 m or 48 in.). Federal mine regulations require that canopy protection on shuttle cars be provided only in mines =1.07 m (42 in.). However, court obtained variances are granted to mines =1 .22 m (48 in). This paper presents ongoing research to design and evaluate a uniquely positioned, ergonomic compartment for a shuttle car that provides the operator with full canopy protection in working heights of 1.02 m (40 in.).

AT bottom of this page is a photograph recently taken by a student-John E. Stewart-of the most northerly situated college in the world, the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines. It is situated at College, near Fairbanks, Alaska, approximately on the 65th parallel of latitude, and therefore just south of the Arctic Circle. It is farther north than Hudson Bay, and in about the same latitude as southern Greenland.

DIFFERENT methods of parting gold from silver, and, on the other hand, silver from gold, were discussed in the last book; also the separation of copper from the latter and further, of lead from gold as well as from silver ; and, lastly, the methods for refining the two precious metals. Now I will speak of the methods by which silver must be separated from copper, and likewise from iron.1 The officina, or the building necessary for the purposes and use of those who separate silver from copper, is constructed in this manner. First, four long walls are built, of which the first, which is parallel with the bank of a stream, and the second, are both two hundred and sixty-four feet long. The second, however, stops at one hundred and fifty-one feet, and after, as it were, a break for a length of twenty-four feet, it continues again until it is of a length equal to the first wall. The third wall is one hundred and twenty feet long, starting at a point opposite the sixty-seventh foot of the other walls, and reaching to their one hundred and eighty-sixth foot.

Fujiwara quarry had been operated by the glory-hole benchcut mining system, but as it became difficult to meet expanding demand with this system, a central-shaft mobile crushing plant (MCP) system was introduced in 1979. This MCP is equipped with a hydraulic walking system manufactured for the first time in Japan. Central-shaft mining is now the common mining method of Japanese limestone quarries. With this method, crushing facilities are usually installed at the bottom of the shaft. But at the Fujiwara quarry, MCP was adopted and installed on the quarry surface. Many MCPs are operated in foreign countries, but few examples exist in Japan. Normally, Japanese limestone deposits lie in high mountain, obviously making it inconvenient for MCPs to walk in and around the quarry. This difficulty, however, was overcome, and the MCP has operated satisfactorily and efficiently for two years since its installation. To overcome difficulties in the central-shaft MCP mining system, two mining methods are employed: the slice-down method and the block-cut method.

This report concerns a seismic geophysical exploration program which was conducted 3 miles southeast of the Carlin Mine, in Lander County, about 18 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. A twelve-fold reflection seismic line was executed over a one-mile traverse in section 32, Township 35 North, Range 51 East. This study is part of an exploration pro- gram directed toward finding Carlin-type gold deposits which are concealed under younger alluvium and volcanics. The exploration objectives of this program are as follows: 1) measure the thickness of the younger, sedimentary and volcanic deposits which overlie the "productive rock sequence", 2) delineate the Roberts Mountains thrust fault, 3) investigate the origin of the geochemical anomalies present in the western portion of section 32.
