Should an arbitrary reduction factor be applied to laboratory compressive strengths when designing pillars? The answer is, as is the main contention of Peng's article, probably not. Many factors affect the strength of the material remaining in the pillar. On the other hand, outside influences will influence the strength testing results from the lab. This is not the first article, nor the last, to discuss the discrepancy between the two strengths. As was discussed in the article, actual pillar strength is affected by several factors. The two mentioned were: • The scale effect of discontinuities. How large must the pillar be so that the increase in discontinuity count with size will not decrease the strength. • Non-uniform strengths and lithologic units within the pillar. The scale effect of discontinuities is important. What size block must be tested so that the rock mass strength is actually measured? For a highly fractured rock mass, or coal with a high cleat density, this sample may be quite small. Conversely, if an unaltered, moderately jointed, quartz monzonite was examined, the sample block would likely be very large. This is the subject of ongo¬ing research. More to the point, if the tested sample is sufficiently large to model the rock mass strength, then no reductions should be made in the lab strength based on this factor alone. Non-uniform strengths and variations in lithologic units will also affect the pillar strength. I am not an expert in coal mines, having gained my experience in hard rock metal mining. These problems, though, are commonplace. However, strength sampling for pillar strength determination involves sampling material from within the lithologic unit that will form the pillar, not from pieces of material found on the floor. In addition, this sampling should cover the entire range of strengths of the material in the pillar-hard units (such as the partings described by Peng), as well as soft units. Testing results should then be included in the pillar design. Contrary to statements in Peng's article, at least one rock mass rating system (Laubscher, 1990) allows for the compositing of strong and weak units into a design rock mass strength that can be used for pillar design.

Steel has occupied such a prominent position in most minds during the last thirty years, particularly since the introduction of the basic open-hearth process (by which the field from which the raw material could be obtained has been so widened), that little attention has been made to improvements in puddling iron. In fact, the general tendency seems to have been to accept the prediction that puddled iron is doomed. Events have in a measure justified such a forecast, due in large part to the introduction of mechanical appliances and operations with large units in the manufacture of steel, from which much lower costs have resulted. But this general tendency has met checks in certain directions. This is notably the case where the finished product is a welded one, or is subject to oxidation, to shock or to vibration; and, as far as the writer's observation goes, the bond (which is largely a mechanical one) is not as close and lasting between steel and tin or zinc as between iron and the same materials. The field still open for puddled iron is, therefore, a large one, provided the low costs of steel-manufacture can be approached. The process of puddling is one of the most interesting in the metallurgy of iron, as the reactions and the changes effected are apparent. The subject has had the strongest fascination to the writer from boyhood, and has led, not unnaturally, to a close study, which long ago resulted in the conviction that it could be successfully carried out with large units and by mechanical means. That others have also drawn these conclusions is shown by many undertakings, though there have been few such attempts during the last twenty-five or thirty years. The introduction of new technology in mine operations has provided real opportunities for increased efficiencies and production gains which translate into enhanced profits. Computing and network technology usage has become integrated into surface mining operations and on average these investments in technology have proven beneficial for efficiency and productivity improvements. Embracing new technologies however, does not guarantee positive results. The expectations or improvements derived through the technology must be confirmed and clarified well before implementation. Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring Systems are an excellent example of an existing technology that can provide full time automated performance measurements of tires operating under harsh conditions and environments. Prompt warnings or alarms signaling when a tire has exceeded operating capacities will provide savings through lowered maintenance costs and increased productivity. To truly quantify the projected savings in tire life, fuel consumption, and increased levels of production, all costs associated with the technology, both direct and indirect must be considered. Apart from the initial cost of the system implementation, ongoing maintenance and support costs must be considered as well as the costs of system integration into existing mine operations

I truly free enterprise system requires free and unrestricted competition among a diversity of suppliers, in order to function properly. The natural attrition of the marketplace tends on the one hand to narrow the competitive field ... but the flow of new competitors entering the arena provides a "diluting" effect, and a "balanced" market place. Without the ready flow of new business entrants, the market becomes increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and. fewer firms. Competition among suppliers is diminished and the "free" marketplace suffers accordingly. A number of organizations, both governmental and private, have recently expressed grave con¬cern over the competitive future of the Western coal market. While most have noted that there is currently adequate competition within the Western market, some have cited the growing con¬centration of coal ownership ... particularly federal lease ownership ... in the hands of a relatively few firms. They suggest that unless this apparent trend is reversed or at least stemmed, the number of new firms entering the federally-dominated West may become reduced to the point where competition will suffer.

About 60 persons are admitted to the graduate course every year after passing the entrance examinations. The entire course of studies is free of charge and the universities provide accommodation for the students who need it. The five years of studies are divided into 10 semesters. One semester lasts 15 weeks. Automatics can be studied at three separate faculties. At the University of Mining and Metallurgy, it is offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics and Electronics as well as the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgical Machines (metrology can also be studied there); at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice, the Faculty of Mining offers the course. The educational plans and programmes comprise 3 groups of subjects: common for a given course of studies (foreign languages, political science and the basic technical knowledge) common for the speciality and subjects of diploma courses. The whole time of studies covers about 4400 hours excluding 3 periods of professional training and the physical training. The classes, laboratory classes, seminars and design classes are obligatory and the attendance is strictly checked. Students may extend their knowledge by participating and working in the Science Clubs. The students' work is checked not only during the classes but also by the examinations held at'the end of respective semesters. Those who fail the exams can repeat them only if very important reasons are presented. At the very end of the studies there is a diploma examination together with a discussion on the diploma thesis, written by the student. The successful result entitles the student to recieve the title of "magister inzynier",M.Sc. of his speciality. The graduates, after working for 2 years, can attend another course of studies lasting 2 semesters and called "Postgraduate Course", or start "Doctoral Studies" finished by the defence of a doctor's thesis. In'these cases the expenses are usually covered by the graduates' employers.

"Since the industrial revolution, plastic products sector has growing bigly, however this fact presents as consequence the increase of municipal plastic waste (MPW).The aim of this work is to developmet polymer mixture from MPW with the adittion of rubber tire (TR) post use and to study the mechanical and morphologycal properties. The polymer mixtures Polypropylene/High impact polystyrene/TR (PP/HIPS/TR), where rate weight TR used was 10, 20 and 30 % and with three size particles (500, 710 e 1000 µm). The specimen tests were obtained by injection molding. Preliminary results of mechanical properties showed that the increase of TR influence in a reduction of the flexural and tensile resistance. Results by scanning electronic microscopy on the fracture surface of mixtures PP/HIPS/TR showed a better interaction of TR particle with HIPS than with PP. Also, the presence of microcavoids was observed, characteristic in PP/HIPS blends, favouring in the increase of its opacity.IntroductionOne great part of the municipal solid waste (MSW) is composed of polymer mixed since commodity plastics, blend to polymer composite. The processing of plastics mixtures for recycling has been attempted with some success, but poor mechanical properties and uncertain economic value limit their more versatile reuse. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) are among the most common plastic waste, predominantly used in packaging food industry [1].One other problem that preoccupy to the society is the increase of rubber tire waste in the proportion of MSW. In Brazil, from 1999 to 2004, 39 % from 386 mil ton of tire post-use were destined to ciment Industry as source of energy [2]. However this destiny produces one other problem, environment pollution, due to gas mixture emitted.Recycling represents a valid alternative to the disposal of post-consumer plastics in common landfills if it is possible to obtain new materials with good final properties compatible with practical and, above all, by cheap methods [3]The reutilization of group tire rubber (TR) powder as a dispersed elastomeric phase in a thermoplastic matrix offers an opportunity to design second generation materials which would be recyclable due to the thermoplastic matrix and which potentially could present thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)-like mechanical behavior. The paper introduces a computer simulation technique to estimate the target detection probabilities associated with search surveys. The technique takes into account the inherent randomness associated with the distributional properties of geologic targets. Use of the technique is illustrated through examples. The paper provides information as to how this technique can be used in obtaining the optimum sampling pattern and optimum spacing associated with target detection surveys.

Superior ventures selection and the subsequent management of their development and production are crucial in the competitive environment of the upstream minerals and energy industry. An important element of this chain is the management of uncertainty and risk dynamics. In the world of faster and more complicated technological and environmental changes, international competition and commodity market dynamics, thorough and sophisticated valuation must be carried out to establish a venture's value and return on investment. Thus, managers and investors must use methods that respond to market dynamics, investment and feasibility study options and provide relevant information for strategic investment decisions. Conventional methods have no built-in procedures to help investors analyse these options. Modern financial methods based on the dynamic arbitrage theory overcome these and other limitations of conventional methods. In this study, dynamic arbitrage theory has been used to formulate 3D parabolic differential equations that govern the stochastic processes of a copper mining venture with ongoing feasibility studies. The alternate direction implicit algorithm is used to solve the numerical approximations of the differential equations and their boundary conditions. Phase dynamics of the venture have been analysed to provide investors the appropriate timing for strategic investment decisions. The study also shows the amount and value of appropriate feasibility studies required to maximize the value of the mining venture.

Our lives, it seems, are like capital entrusted to us to be expended as wisely and effectively as we may. With them we purchase whatever of accomplishment the stuff that is in us permits. It is impossible to escape profound regret that a career so full of the highest promise, and a personality so overflowing with all that is fine and lovable, should have been cut short at the age of thirty-one. Yet who can doubt that in a few months Perry bought with his life the fullest achievement of a life-time—a glorious part in the salvation of Liberty and Justice and Decency, indeed of Civilization itself! Recent studies of creep have made it apparent that plastic deformation may occur in metals under stresses less than the elastic limit as determined from short-time tests. In summarizing conclusions drawn from creep tests by various investigators, Tapselll said: "It is evident that if a material has a true elastic range, the elastic limit must represent the maximum stress for no creep." The presence of a definite elastic limit, represented in single crystals by a critical or threshold shearing stress, is claimed by Schmid2, Elam3 and others who have investigated the plastic deformation of single crystals. However, this "law of critical shearing stress" was determined2 from short-time tests, and the measurement of the deformation was made with apparatus primarily designed to observe large amounts of plastic deformation, not to detect elastic changes. Experimental data recently obtained with highly sensitive instruments by A. W. Hanson4 on zinc and by Podaschewsky5 on rock salt indicate that the elastic range in single crystals is considerably narrower than formerly was supposed. Moreover, a theoretical possibility of permanent deformation, under the influence of even the smallest shear stress in single crystals above a certain temperature (Td), has been developed by G. I. Taylor6. This evidence seemed to warrant an examination of the elastic limit in large single crystals by means of creep tests. The first metal chosen for examination was zinc. "To help evaluate the vibration patterns of an excised lung, a method is developed to determine which parts of the surface of an excised lung are responding to acoustic excitation via the trachea. Holographic interferometry, a very' sensitive technique ·that can measure movements of a few microns, is used to detect the lung surface movements.The intact lung and heart are excised from Long· Evans male rats weighing 250 gm. A tube is inserted into the trachea and connected via a funnel to a 3 inch cone speaker. The assembly is positioned in the holographic unit and excited at frequencies up to 10,000 Hz. The holographic unit contains an acousto-optic shutter used with a 0.5 watt Argon laser.The resulting reconstructed holograms contain interference fringes that are indicated of lung surface vibration.INTRODUCTIONA 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Biomechanics [1] describes diseases of the lung as a major national health problem. One of the recommendations of the report is for continued study of the mechanical properties of lung tissue. As an example, the report cites at least three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns or the lung."

Normal process development for pressure-preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests. That is followed by continuous autoclave pilot-plant testing to confirm the process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of grind size, time and temperature. And it will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several test programs have shown that the cyanide-leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot-plant autoclave. It has become apparent that laboratory investigations should extended to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. Santa Fe Pacific Gold conducted several months of metallurgical investigations for a major refractory sulfide gold deposit. The project started with batch tests to investigate and optimize the primary variables, such as grind size, retention time and temperature. These tests were conducted using a representative whole ore composite.

The metallurgical response of the Point Leamington deposit has been studied. Two series of bench tests were conducted and various ore samples and flotation products were examined using image analysis techniques. The majority of sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains in this texturally complex ore were found to be smaller than 10 micrometres. Copper recoveries were low with losses mainly as fine inclusions in pyrite. Sphalerite recoveries were somewhat better due to a generally coarser habit. Gold and silver recoveries were also low and only solid solution silver was identified in the ore. The deposit shows poor economic prospects unless additional tonnage of high grade zinc ore can be delineated.

Many open pit mines are now being mined at very significant depths, often at depths far greater than was originally planned. Even deeper open pits are also being planned, to depths that would be considered deep by underground standards. The heights of the resulting rock slopes are usually beyond the current experience and knowledge base. The exceptions are, perhaps, some very high and steep natural rock slopes. These natural rock slopes are also assuming greater significance owing to pressures of infrastructure development and consequent exposure of such infrastructure to the hazards of slope failure and landslides. Developments in road and rail infrastructure are also resulting in higher rock cuttings. Present understanding of the mechanisms of slope behaviour and failure for high slopes, and for slopes subjected to high in situ stress conditions, appears to be lacking. If the mechanisms of slope behaviour are not well understood, the validity of commonly applied methods of analysis of the stability of such slopes may be questionable. The papers in this specialist International Symposium, including papers on mechanisms and monitoring techniques, and case studies will contribute to the understanding of these issues. The Symposium has attracted good international participation, from both the attendance and authorship points of view. We are very grateful to all presenters and delegates for taking timeout of their very busy schedules to come and share their knowledge and we hope that all will benefit from this event. The reaction kinetics of the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock (32% P?05) using 45% nitric acid were investigated using the Shrinking Core Model (SCM) , a newly developed Diffusion Model (DM) and a newly developed Combined Reaction and Diffusion Model (CRDM). This was achieved buy conducting a number of experiments in a controlled batch reactor system at different temperatures. The conversion and the reaction rate were calculated at different time intervals. The SCM based on reaction time and the CRDM characterize the acidulation process of phosphate rock. Diffusion of nitric acid and the products of acidulation at the early stages of reaction through the phosphate rock were found to be the rate-controlling step, resulting in a dif- fusion coefficient, which controls the mass transfer process. The reaction kinetics were found to fit first-order kinetics especially during early stages of reaction time. The deviation of the kinetics from first-order at later stages was due to the fact that the overall reaction was mass transfer controlled with respect to nitric acid and products diffusion.
