It is commonly believed by metallurgists that in copper-smelting, the copper in the slags, which is irreducible by continued " settling," is retained in the form of " prills " of matte. I have frequently held well-settled slag in a molten condition for a long period without being able thereby to reduce the copper-content. The slag acted as though it contained a minimum of dissolved or combined copper that could not be settled out by gravity. I have used reagents, but without satisfying myself in what form this copper existed. The same slags, by fine grinding and elutriation, could not be separated into portions containing more or less copper than the average content. By treating copper-slags in an electric furnace a button of metallic iron and copper was produced, but the high temperature and the strong reducing-action of the furnace mere influences that suggest an explanation of a result not obtainable with ordinary smelting-temperatures. If all the copper in the slag were in the form of copper-matte, and not existing as a dissolved compound with some of the elements of the slag, then the other metals in the matte, such as gold and silver, should occur in the slag in the same ratio to the copper as to the copper in the accompanying matte. This reasoning led me to study the ratio of metals in the products of smelting, and, apart from the issues discussed in this paper, the research has proved both interesting and illuminative. On the assumption of a similar ratio of metals in matte and slag, if the percentage of copper in the slag accompanying a matte containing 50 oz. of silver and 1 oz. of gold per ton of copper was 0.3 per cent., or 96 oz. per toll of slag, there should be found 0.15 oz. of silver and 0.003 oz. of gold per ton of slag; but, in my experience, there is less silver and much

The term 'Llow-sulfur coal," as used in this discussion, is limited to coals containing less, or very little more, than 1 per cent. sulfur. For certain purposes it might be advantageous to include coals that contain as much as 1.25 per cent. sulfur, because such coals have been considered as available for making metallurgic coke of fair grade; but the same reasoning might apply to coals containing as much as.1 1/2 per cent. sulfur, if facilities exist for utilizing such coal by admixture with coal containing less sulfur. , In Pennsylvania, it is not possible to define the exact geographic limits of the areas in which coals relatively low in sulfur exist, because variations in the percentage of sulfur occur irregularly and often abruptly. It is not uncommon to find areas, more or less circumscribed in extent, in which the coal is relatively high in sulfur although all the surrounding territory contains low-sulfur coal; and, similarly, small areas of low-sul. fur coal exist in districts where the coal is normally high in sulfur. These generalizations apply, with few exceptions, to the whole area underlaid with bituminous coal in the State of Pennsylvania, and also to each of the individual beds of coal in this state. Pennsylvania is poorly supplied with coals of the low-sulfur class. We find, however, as an offset to this condition, very large areas in which coal ranging from 1 to 2 1/2 per cent. sulfur exists in beds of good workable thickness. This coal, by washing, can be reduced in sulfur low enough to make coke of a high grade. While a considerable tonnage of workable low-sulfur coal remains in the Pennsylvania bituminous districts, it has been necessary to turn to the areas of higher sulfur coal for the supply of metallurgical coke. This utilization of the higher sulfur areas has been made possible either by washing or by selective mining. Washing.—Fine crushing of the entire feed is not generally necessary to the successful washing of Pennsylvania coals. This is due to the fact that the pyrite is rarely finely and uniformly disseminated throughout the coal but is usually confined to high-sulfur benches in the bed or to concentrations on the cleavage planes of the coal. Hence, by graded crushing and sizing it is frequently possible to at once reclaim those portions of the coal bed containing coal that is relatively free from pyrite.

Eng.), Ph.D. (Cape) (Fellow) The theoretical and experimental results of a study of centrifugalmills are reviewed. Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

The mixer that is commonly encountered in hydro metallurgical operations consists of a single turbine and tank combination. However, it would be advantageous to examine some common solvent extraction mixing systems in the light of the fundamentals of chemical reactor design. The basic concepts of reactor design are commonly used in the chemical industry, and it should not be too difficult to apply them to solvent extraction. The factors that affect the engineering design of a reactor are: the reacting system; the type of reaction; and the configuration of the reactor. The reaction system in solvent extraction consists of a heterogeneous liquid phase, involving two immiscible liquids. It is essential f or the process that the reactor product can be separated efficiently in the subsequent settler. The type of reaction in solvent extraction system may be quite complex, and the picture is complicated by the presence of competing and side reactions. The reactors themselves have been generally continuous stirred tanks, and the nature of the mixer-settler makes it unlikely that the pumping mixer can be dispensed with. However, it appears that there should be some definite advantages to a system of stirred reactors in series. The kinetic experiments which are carried out should have the definition of optimum reaction conditions as one of their goals. The data obtained from these experiments must also be applicable to the design of reaction equipment. Reactor selection and design is often a unique problem for each chemical process, and does not lend itself to a systematic general approach. However, the application of chemical and physical principles to mixer design in solvent extraction should result in practical, more efficient plants.

A cut-off grade is used to distinguish an economically viable block of ore from non-economical ones in mining operations. In order to obtain a high Net Present Value (NPV), a strategic and precise determination of cut-off grades (mill feed/marginal, marginal/waste) is required. In recent years, the significant depletion of feed grades and increasing mining operating costs have affected the viability of new and existing mining operations. Hence, the introduction of a pre-concentration system to process ore before sending it the main processing plant has gained increasing attention for its potential improvements in resource exploitation processes, mineral processing, energy consumption and environmental impacts. The primary potential advantage of implementing a pre-concentration system is the improvement of resource utilisation and increased reserves as a result of a reduction in cut-off grade. The objective of this paper is to present a new cut-off grade method, which can be used in the presence of a pre-concentration system for underground metalliferous mining operations. The results of this study illustrate the potential economic benefits of using a pre-concertation system prior to a mineral processing operation as a result of the reduced cut-off grade and increased NPV.

RECENTLY, there has been much activity in the field of nucleation of martensitic transformations.'- One of the problems in this field is the calculation of the rate of nucleation (number of plates nucleated per unit untransformed volume per unit time) in terms of observable parameters. Two such observable parameters are the fraction of the length of a straight line which corresponds to the portion of the total length of the line that lies in the martensitic phase and the number of plates intersected by this straight line per unit length of line. Because of the necessity of a valid answer to this problem, the following investigation was undertaken. Although this problem has been treated in the past, a derivation of the relation between the volume and linear fractions of martensite will be described to illustrate the method used in the succeeding analyses. It is assumed that the martensitic plates are in the form of a right circular cylinder having a small height relative to the radius of the base. The volume fraction of martensite is then: fr = lXNl,hjAl [1] where f, is the volume fraction of martensite, and Nij is the number of plates per unit total volume having the area Ai and the height hi. Pressures developed by the coal during the coking process have been responsible for serious trouble to many companies that operate or build by-product coke ovens. The insidious nature of this trouble is indicated by the fact that oven operators, unless they have ascertained the characteristics of the coals they use, cannot determine the existence of dangerous pressures until after the damage has been done. A rather popular misconception is that ease of pushing of the charge at the completion of the coking period indicates that no dangerous pressure has been developed, but this is far from the truth; pressures developed during the coking period are often completely dissipated by the shrinkage of the charge in the completion of coking, and so any criterion based on the ease of pushing is futile. However, methods of testing coals are available that will definitely distinguish the dangerous coals from those that are safe, and such methods have been brought to a high degree of certainty. The operator should take no risk that involves either a lack of knowledge of the behavior of coals during coking or the failure to believe that certain of the coals or coal mixtures can cause damage to the oven structure. This merely tends to minimize the problem and leads to claims that coking coals of all kinds may be carbonized with no danger of damage to the oven structure provided some particular kind of byproduct oven is used. This lack of appreciation of the true situation is in itself one of the main factors leading to damage of coke-oven structures. Coals that develop more than a certain safe pressure cannot be used in by-product coke ovens without causing damage to the side flue walls. The following paper presents a highly certain method for the measurement of the pressures developed during the carbonization of coal—a method that is the culmination of many years of work on the problem in which a number of methods for the purpose were investigated and used. While actual pressures found may appear to be small when expressed in pounds per square inch, the number of square inches in each oven wall is so large that the total pressure on the oven wall becomes an enormous load.

Many mining engineers tend to think of the economic analysis of mining ventures and projects on an f.o.b. mine basis. This is especially true of mines that are operated in an established domestic mining district. Here, transportation costs are many times smaller in comparison to overall delivered prices. One has only to consider the development economics of taconite mines in Minnesota with production destined for lower lake ports to see the truism of this statement. In the international arena, however, with consumers such as Japan and Europe located thousands of miles from source countries such as Brazil and Australia, the situation is different because mineral transportation is often a critical factor in determining project viability. This article is being presented to provide a basic understanding of the factors that govern ocean transportation of the three largest bulk mineral commodities shipped around the world: iron ore, coal, and phosphate. The major dry bulk commodity trades as a percentage of volume shipped are iron ore, 45%; grain, 25%; coal, 20%; phosphate rock, 5%; and bauxite and aluminum, 5%. Most of these commodities are carried by bulk carriers rather than tankers. These are vessels that have cargo, usually in solid form, loaded directly into the hold of a vessel by shore-side materials handling facilities or, in the case of a geared bulk carrier by the vessel's cranes and derricks. Gearless bulk carriers are used in most cases for iron ore and coal. Geared bulk vessels are mainly used for minor dry bulk trades such as ore concentrates (copper, lead, zinc, etc.), fertilizers (phosphate, potash, etc.), cement, petroleum, and coke. There has been, however, a trend toward using more self-unloading ships in both iron ore and coal ocean transport. And large vessels, such as the Universe Kure of Japan, have been designed with a cargo capability of 157 kt (155,000 dwt (deadweight tons)). Trade patterns of major bulk commodities are influenced by the Panama and Suez canals. Both of these canals have draft limitations that prohibit large, deep-draft, ocean-going vessels from using them for shorter trade routes used by Panamax and Suex vessels. The shipping industry has developed two widely used vessel classes; the Panamax and Suex vessels. The former is the maximum size vessel that can pass through the Panama Canal, usually 51-61 kt (50,000 - 60,000 dwt), depending on the season and draft of the vessel. The Panama Canal is usually 0.6-0.9 m (2-3 ft) deeper in the winter than in the summer. Thus, less cargo can be carried by the same size ship in the summer through the canal than in the winter. The Suex vessel is in the 71-81 kt (70,000-80,000 dwt) class. This larger vessel is able to transit the Suez since Egypt deepened the canal following the Seven Days War. Recently, the Suez Canal has been deepened to accommodate vessels with drafts as deep as 152 kt (150,000 dwt).

Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc, AIME Vol. 121, edited by Dr. C. R. Hayward in 1936, remains a document of importance today even though 34 years have passed in the meantime. Since nothing in this world seems to be permanent, however, and progress brings new and better ways to do things, a two-volume set has just been published to bring the state of the art of 1936 up to date. This two-volume set, Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc and Extractive Metallurgy of Lead and zinc, incorporates the papers to be presented during the Proceedings of the 1970 World Symposium on the Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc. The Symposium is being held October 20-24, 1970, in St. Louis, a site near to the famous Lead Belt of southeast Missouri. Some eighty papers are bound in these two volumes covering exploration, geology, mining, concentrating, roasting, smelting, electrolytic processing, residue fuming, refining, etc. All of this is laced with data on tonnages, processes, assays and efficiencies obtained, and the man-hours and equipment needed to achieve these performances.

MARCEL R. DALY (communication to the Secretary?).-The fundamental disagreement between Eugene Coste and the writer proceeds essentially from the contradictory views they hold on the origin of petroleum. This difference cannot be bridged, nor can inorganic and organic theories be discussed here. The writer has suggested that the proper thing in such a case would be to agree to disagree. Coming to the detailed objections further presented by Mr. Coste, the writer feels that, in the main, they take their source in a wrong interpretation of the theory, and the writer is sometimes too generously invested with views that are not his own. 1. The only requirement for the theory is that the oil proceeding from organic remains be distributed in a water-laden sediment, and that this sediment be submitted to the increasing compression due to the continuous accumulation of superimposed strata, which would tend to squeeze out the liquid contents (p. 1152). This squeezing out would be further aided by the distortion of the strata (p. 1148, a). Nothing here makes impossible the slow formation of the oil, if this is considered necessary, as the piling up of the strata in the syncline would require by itself a protracted length of time, and, further, the squeezing-out process is a slow one. Possibly the formation of the oil may even continue during part of the process of distortion. But the mode of formation of the oil and the time and temperature required for it are left to the chemist to decide. The diastrophic theory, which is essentially a theory of motion and accumulation dependent on the laws of mechanics, is not directly concerned with them, provided the general points heretofore outlined be agreed upon. Perhaps it would be wise not to claim too many "eons" for the formation of the hydrocarbons, if the statement made by Sir Boverton Redwood is correct that "the coral reefs of the Red Sea are charged in places with recent petroleum, formed in that torrid climate from the swarming organisms occupying the shallow pools."1

A great deal has been written of late regarding the loss of silver in assaying; very discordant results have been published by different writers, and much uncertainty exists concerning even approximate losses in a careful determination of silver, as represented by a fire-assay. In the present paper it has been the aim of the writer to determine as accurately as possible the losses sustained by silver, under certain specified conditions, during the process of cupellation. Such losses are well known to be due to absorption by the cupel and volatilization. The conditions, however, which govern these losses are not believed by the writer to be so well understood. The most important of these are : 1. The effect of variable quantities of silver used. 2. The temperature of cupellation. 3. The character and quantity of impurities in the lead button. 4. The weight of the lead button. 5. The nature of the cupel. The following experiments were made for the purpose of demonstrating, as nearly as possible, the total loss of silver in cupellation under the most favorable conditions to be obtained in commercial assaying. Chemically pure silver and pure lead were taken. The latter was obtained from test-lead, first melted into a bar, from which pieces of the desired weight were cut and accurately weighed. The experiments recorded in this paper were planned by the writer, but executed throughout by Mr. J. N. Walker, whose ability as an accurate, careful and painstaking assayer is too well known and recognized throughout the West to require any further endorsement from me.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) have become important mineral-based commodities in recent years. GCC manufacturing generally requires high purity and high brightness deposits of marble, chalk or limestone as the stone source. PCC usually uses limes made from lesser quality limestone deposits. GCC products have a wide span of particle size, with a d50 size ranging from sub micrometers to as large as several inches such as those used in landscaping. PCC products are typically limited to less than 10 µm (1,250 mesh). Each PCC product has a narrowly distributed size range. GCC and PCC products tend to have higher levels of whiteness com-pared with other traditional filler and extenders, such as kaolin and talc. Published statistics of GCC production volume often vary due to the exclusion of certain size range GCC products. According to Roskill’s latest estimate, world GCC capacity was believed to exceed 56 Mt (62 millionst) during 2004 for all grades.

The recent upswing in mining coincided with increased environmental concern. These trends have significantly increased regulation, but have not always provided sound environmental protection. Throughout, mining has remained passive, reacting to initiatives from outside. The high road to environmental protection must be an active strategy. The mining industry must take the lead and develop an environmental program effective in price and protection. It must involve all levels of mining. The mining industry should be the real environmental activist. We have the most to gain by sound environmental protection and the most to lose if the environment decays.

As modern conveyors are increasing in size and complexity, their control requirements are becoming more and more critical. In addition to the safety and equipment protection requirements, control systems are now called to implement intelligent drive controls derived from dynamic analysis modelling, as well as to provide fast and accurate diagnostics while keeping operator controls simple. These requirements led to the development of a new and innovative approach to control system development. This paper describes the control philosophy used by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) and some of the key features of our approach to the architecture of control systems.

In an effort to improve flotation efficiency of the domestic minerals industry, the US Bureau of Mines conducted research to measure the improvement provided by fine bubbles on the flotation of fine-sized particles (minus 20- µm, minus 625 mesh). The turbulent velocity distributions of the fluid within the flotation cell were measured as a function of time and position and used to increase the precision of a fine-particle, turbulent-flotation model. For the mineral system tested, improved flotation response was obtained in the laboratory testing with small bubbles and intense agitation. These results matched the model's predicted response.

Closure plans for open pit mines require the prediction of final pit lake water chemistry. The geochemical models used for water quality predictions make assumptions about the physical and chemical behavior of the water in the lake; however, few pit lakes have been well documented to provide empirical data for model design. The pit lake at the Sleeper Mine has been characterized with regular water chemical analyses and regular, continuous, multi-parameter profiles through the water column. The lake has undergone repeated periods of chemical and thermal stratification, punctuated by rapid turnover events resulting in vertical homogenization within the water column.

The authors present an interesting review of various applications of rather well known theories. Their rearrangement of the original working equations is strictly computer oriented and serves well to that effect; however, the new appearance will be confusing to the slide rule-wielding members of the profession. In reviewing discrepancies existing between calculations made by Baker Oil Tools, Inc. field engineering staff members and computer output submitted based on the authors' program, the following error in concept was discovered in Eq. 4. The authors quote the length change due to helical buckling in the following form We appreciate Kurt Leutwyler's awareness of Archimedes' principle, and concur that the final term in the denominator of Eq. 4 results in a small error. Examples checked revealed less than I ft error, and corrective expressions for the four possibilities of displacement follow. The portion of the denominator within extra large brackets represents the original term W,, = weight of outside fluid displaced per unit length. The authors interpreted the expression "displaced" in general oilfield terminology as a fluid displacement, such as "mud displaced with water, etc." A review of the theory forming the basis for these helical buckling calculations discloses that this displacement is meant to be interpreted in the Archimedean sense, i.e., fluid displaced by the solid body. here the tubing and the seal nipple. Lubinski* illustrated the point by summing moments due to mechanical and hydraulic forces acting on a free body immersed in fluid. This moment summation, always in the Archi,medean sense, yields effects of the real forces, including W,, and the fictitious force on the bending mechanism. I would be interested to hear the authors' comments regarding this theoretical point, which nevertheless is not mute since its lack of recognition seems to result in erroneous calculations. We must not remain mute to Leutwyler's suggestion that these equations, although computer oriented, are confusing to the slide rule engineers. Such input information as density in pounds per gallon, pipe diameters in inches, pumping rate in barrels per minute and pipe length in feet is not confusing to most of us. Yet there may be some rugged individuals in field positions who carry tables of conversion constants and have committed to memory such items as coefficients of thermal expansion and Poisson's ratio; however, even this type of individual would welcome a simplified equation occasionally. ALTHOUGH a few engineers have recognized the problem of the mechanism of filtration it has never been studied in a quantitative way. A background for a better understanding will be afforded by a survey of certain fundamental principles of filtration. In recent years, authorities have become practically unanimous in saying that the actual filtering should be done, not by the cloth itself, but by a layer of solid particles deposited upon it. Thus, a cloth may be used in which the openings are considerably larger than the particles to be filtered, provided that groups of particles form an arch or bridge over each opening. This can be accomplished if the initial pressure is so low that the arch will not be broken while it is still thin. According to Wright,1 the chief advantage of this method of filtration is that the open-weave cloth does not become clogged as easily as does one of closer weave, where the fine particles often work their way into the interior of the cloth and become caught there. If the character of the material to be filtered is such that it will not form a good film, then it becomes advantageous to use "filter aids" for pre-coating the cloth with a desirable layer of solids, and the coating need be only of a very slight thickness for good results. Until the film is formed, the first runnings of the filtrate may be cloudy, often necessitating refiltering this portion. A factor which has considerable effect on the performance of filters is the concentration of solids in the pulp. According to Wright, a. high concentration of solids gives a porous cake, since the flow is then slower than with- a thin pulp. The porosity of the cake is also affected by the pressure: a high initial pressure tends to compact the cake, and the same effect results from fluctuations of pressure. In his studies of the relation between pore size and particle size, Hatschek2 observed that the particles in a pulp tend to arrange themselves with maximum cross-section parallel to the direction of flow and that this is more marked at the higher velocities.
