"INTRODUCTION Technically speaking, bauxite is not a definite mineral but a mixture of several minerals belonging to a group of partly consolidated material known as laterite, which have been formed by surface weathering of rocks.The term bauxite is applied to the ore of aluminum, although a substantial amount is used for other purposes, such as a base in certain chemical industries and in the manufacture of artificial abrasives, refractories, and certain cements. Although bauxite has not been classed as strategic it now appears that the domestic supply may be insufficient for expanded defense requirements.Until recently, domestic production of metallic aluminum has been ample to meet requirements, but estimates of pyramiding future needs of the defense program have caused serious attention to be directed to the self-sufficiency of this country, both as to the supply of the raw material, bauxite, and the metallurgical capacity available to convert the ore to metallic aluminum.At the request of the Secretary of the interior, representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey recently investigated domestic resources of bauxite.A preliminary study of published literature and a field investigation disclosed that"

Both innovation and excellence are desirable attributes of education, as they are also markers in the progression of the human race, but how attainable are they? The interaction of minerals and humanity provides a special insight into the development of both criteria, from the discovery that chert cuts, through the Bronze Age and the first use of metal alloys for implements, to using coal, oil and uranium as sources of fuel. However, there have been many hiccups along the way, where excellence in one respect has meant disaster in another. Examples are in the exploitation of asbestos, and in traditionally poor work practices in mining, both contributing to the widespread public belief that minerals and mining are ecologically undesirable. Yet is this perception based on the unrealistic expectation of innovation and excellence being simultaneous qualities of any given process? Common sense born of experience indicates that the journey from one, to the other, is usually a long and often tedious process, with much trial and error before excellence is attained. In our time, the partnership between academia and industry is the usual pathway to achieve it. Even so, we should take care that innovation does not become overwhelmed by the pursuit of excellence: as history clearly demonstrates, humanity depends upon both.

The role of chemical speciation in alkaline cyanide solutions is discussed by reference to recent experimental data from the authors' laboratories. It is shown that serious gaps exist in our present knowledge of the thermodynamics of cyanide complexes in solution. Nevertheless, using the available data and the JESS suite of computer programs it has been possible to develop a simplified chemical speciation model for alkaline cyanide solutions under conditions relevant to the gold extraction process. Some possible implications of the model for plant operations are Discussed.

Quality and durability of sprayed concrete depends on the concrete mix design, the type and use of accelerator and all the aspects of the placement onto the rock surface in the underground working. A large number of influence factors are involved and they must be managed for a successful and durable permanent sprayed concrete structure to be produced. The paper discusses some of the central issues, including how to view the long-term effects of chemical admixtures and accelerators in wetmix sprayed concrete. Permanent lining sprayed concrete for rock support is increasingly being used today and the durability can be equally achieved as for any other concrete.

The convenience of mechanical arrangements for handling ingots, blooms, billets, bars, beams, etc., and feeding them to the rolls, is so universally recognized as to require no demonstration. In the rolling of heavy beams, such as are now coming into general use, such arrangements are practically essential, by reason of the difficulty and expense of the manual handling of the large masses of metal treated. I submit herewith the drawings of a rolling-mill feed-table, designed and patented by myself, which I think will be found simple in construction and operation, not likely to get . out of order, and efficient in performing the work for which it is intended. Fig. 1 is a sectional plan, taken on the line I I of Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line II II of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line III III of Figs. 1 and 2. As the details of the drawings are numbered throughout, and the same number always indicates the same part, I cannot more clearly describe the mechanism than by giving the following key to these numbers: Nos. 2 and 3 are the sets of rolls (here shown as three-high rolls, though that is not absolutely necessary). Nos. 4, 4 are the two feed-tables, one on each side of the rolls. The uide frames of the tables are made of parallel channel-bars. Nos. 6, 5 are the feed-rollers, journaled between the channel-bars and provided at their ends with beveled gear-wheels, 6, 6, which mesh with beveled pinions, 7, 7, on shafts, 8, 8, which latter are driven by elevated power-connections, to be mentioned presently. "The industrial processing of ores containing gold and/or platinum minerals is generally mining site specific, e.g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size classification, gravity concentration, amalgamation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical leaching, ion ex-change/solvent extraction and froth flotation. Because of the relatively small quantities of Au and Pt that exist in the earth’ s crust, the economical recovery of Pt and Au often requires that the Au and Pt be associated with other industrially important minerals. This association of Au and Pt with other minerals can occur in very complicated mineralogical forms. It is probably safe to say that Au and Pt mineral concentration from natural ores represents some of the most complex metallurgical challenges facing the mining industry.Froth flotation is a technique that is receiving increasing industrial attention for the treatment of finely disseminated and/or associated Au and Pt minerals. The high throughput at relatively low capital cost, the potentially high selectivity, and the existence of a well-established technology for treating more abundant associated minerals such as base metal sulfides makes froth flotation an attractive processing alternative. Broadly speaking, the industrial oriented froth flotation experience with Au and Pt minerals exists in two major categories: 1) the flotation of Au and Pt associated with pyrite (or pyrrhotite) and 2) the flotation of Au and Pt associated with primarily Cu, Zn, or Cu/Pb/Zn containing sulfide ores.In the case of the precious metal association with pyrite (or pyrrhotite), much of the published froth flotation experience comes from South Africa. Typically, such processes are done using an acid side flotation with a collector such as mercaptobenzothiazole. The approach obviously is to float pyrite and hence recover associated gold. Generally the higher the total sulfur recovery the higher the gold recovery. Similar experiences of Pt associated with pyrite are a lot less common mineralogically and hence less well documented industrially. For example, in Canada, Pt is often associated with pyrrhotite but is not really processed as a straight pyrrhotite recovery.For the situation of Au and/or Pt associated with other base metal sulfide minerals, the industrial experience base is quite varied and is well documented from both North and South American operations. The nature of most of these flotation processes is to design, operate, and optimize the installed concentrator to get the Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, etc. that is the bulk of the valuable sulfide ore and then take whatever precious metal recovery comes. Typically, such flotations are on the basic side using standard thiol collectors such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, thionocarbamates, etc. It is very common with such ores to use mixtures of collectors in order to get ""everything"". Often in such plants, there is an inherent balancing act occuring so as to operate in such a manner to reject pyrite (and pyrrhotite) in order to maintain high base metal mineral concentrate grades and yet recover sufficient precious metals such as Au and Pt minerals which often are associated with the iron sulfides being rejected. Obviously in such an environment, the smelter operation often ends up telling the concentrator what the precious metal recovery actually was in a given production period."

SMITH*-Mr. Rockwood has presented a very interesting paper on problems of the mineral aggregate industry in meeting specification requirements, which apparently are ever decreasing in tolerance. May I call attention to a method of mineral separation that may be of value in separating the flat aggregate particles from the more angular ones and possibly the soft particles from the hard. The method is the old Pardee spiral coal separator, extensively used many years ago in the anthracite region for separating rock and bone from anthracite coal.1 The success of the process depends on the relative coefficient of friction of the aggregate particles to be separated rather than on their relative specific gravity. The flat and the soft particles normally will slide more slowly and stay on the inner spiral until they reach the delivery spout at the bottom whereas the round and the angular pieces will work to the outer edge and fall off into a spiral of larger diameter. The capacity of the separator is increased materially by having three inner spirals, with a separate feed for each, on which the particles travel more slowly, and one outer spiral from which the more rapidly traveling pieces slide to the bottom. IRVING WARNER*-I have long been convinced that much of the equipment and methods developed for mineral dressing might be advantageously employed in the mineral aggregates industry, and more particularly in the production of sand and gravel. The two industries are not well acquainted with each other or their problems. They have separate trade publications. The difficulty with the situation is that there are few large sand and gravel plants and few provided with technical services in their own organization or by retainer. This does not refer to engineering organizations but rather to improvement of plant technic in processing.

The results of polentiometric model studies and numerical computations are described. The purpose of these studies was to determine the influence of the mobility ratio on flooding efficiencies during water encroachment in petroleum reservoirs, in systems of regular well geometry. The direct line drive well pattern having relative spacing distances of one and one-half to one was investigated for water to oil mobility ratios of 10. 1. and 0.1. The results of these studies indicate that the pattern Sweep efficiency i.; very dependent upon the mobility ratio. INTRODUCTION The almost universal occurrence of water in the immediate neighborhood of oil-hearing sands lends considerable emphasis to the desirability of having a rational analysis of water encroachment into petroleum reservoirs. This problem has 1)become increasingly important with the accelerated use of water injection for secondary recovery operations. The water encroachment problem has been studied from both the theoretical and experimental viewpoints by Muskat.' He has formulated, in a precise manner, differential equations to express flow in a water encroachment system, and rigorous analytical solutions have been developed for the linear, radial, and spherical cases.' However, it becomes exceedingly difficult to solve the encroachment problem rigorously for any general two-dimensional system in which the shape of the two-fluid interface is not immediately evident from the geometry of the system. The difficulty lies in the fart that a rigorous analytical solution requires that the shape of the two-fluid interface be known simultaneously with its instantaneous posititon and with the pressure distribution on both sides of the interface. Although this paper concerns the study of the two-fluid system of oil and water. the methods described in the paper are generally applicable to other systems of incompressible and immiscible fluids in which the displacing fluid sweep-the displaced fluid down to a residual value. In each region it is assumed there is only one mobile fluid and its mobility is constant throughout the region. The Same procedure. with minor alteration, is applicable for gas injection systems provided the assumption can be made that both the displaced and displacing gases can be described by steady state formulas. For the particular two-fluid problem considered in this paper, there is a relative permeability. K, and a viscosity. p. associated with the water zone, and a different permeability and viscosity associated with the oil zone. The K/p (mobility value associated with a particular volume element of the porous medium. at any instant of time. will depend upon whether the element is ahead of. or behind the advancing interface. It is assumed that all volume elements ahead of the interface are characterized by the K/p value for oil, while all the elements behind the interface are characterized by the K/p value for water. That is. the K/p value in the oil zone is constant throughout the oil zone. and the K/p value in the water zone is also constant but different from the value in the oil zone. The symbols are defined at the end of the paper. The well pattern chosen for initial study is the direct line drive; the swept-out area at breakthrough was determined by two different methods which are described in the section on theory. These are: 1. Potentiometric analyzer 2. Numerical computation The use of the potentiometric analyzer for studying water flooding problems is adequately described in the literature, particularly for cases where the mobility in the water zone is assumed equal to the mobility in the oil zone." In the current climate, there is a real need to bridge the gap between theory and the real world mining considerations, and develop viable, cost-effective, high performance thickeners. With a greater need to extract profits from both difficult-to-process ores and lower grade orebodies, coupled with the necessity to produce 'greener', less water intensive technologies, suppliers need to take current thickener designs to the next level and into the 21st century. The complexity of 'getting it right' within a thickenerÆs feedwell, the 'nerve centre' of the thickener, is no small task. Delivering dilution water and mixing this water with incoming feed slurry, addition of flocculant, maximising flocculant-slurry interaction to build aggregate size, minimising unabsorbed flocculant percentage, volume average of solids volume fraction, momentum dissipation ratio, dilution recycle ratio, volume average shear, maximum shear rate at exit, aggregate size on exit, uniform discharge profile and more ù all of these need to occur in the right order and in the right proportions within the feedwell. This paper discusses the genesis and evolution of a new feedwell design, the first major innovation in the thickening industry in over 15 years.

INTRODUCTION The United States has an abundance of coal reserves in thick seams. Most of these resources are in the West. Surface mining operations in thick seams are highly efficient, particularly in the West, but methods for mining thick seams underground are very limited. The percentage of resource recovery in deep mining of thick seams is often as low as 30 percent. It is estimated that there are 45 billion tons of coal reserves for underground mining in seams greater than 10-ft thick in the western states alone. With such a large available reserve base and low rates of recovery, the need to develop the technology to mine these thick reserves is quite evident. As the definition of a thick seam varies widely from country to country, a thick seam is defined here as any seam where the height is such that it is not minable in a single pass with available mining equipment.

Data about shipments in this county are more plentiful than in most others. Canal records, although not complete, are available for 1837-1840, 1856-1857, 1859 and 1864. The census figures, and those of the reports of the Secretary of Internal Affairs, are very evidently too .low. Local consumption within the county has always been large, mainly due to the Cambria Iron Company, and other manufacturing plants, in Johnstown; here a large coke supply was made from coal directly from the mines, neither coal or coke being handled by any outside transportation agency. An experimental investigation of the dissolution of three base-metal sulfide minerals, namely, CuFeS2, ZnS and PbS, in hydrochloric acid medium in the presence of manganese dioxide is reported. Polarization measurements and leaching studies were employed in the study. Dissolution occurred in the following three ways: by the cyclic action of the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox couple, by galvanic interaction between Mn02 and the sulfide minerals, and because of chlorine evolution from the system. The later two routes were found more effective at higher HCI levels. PbS appeared to be oxidized easily, whereas CuFeS2 was the most difficult to dissolve. ZnS dissolution fell in between PbS and CuFeS2.

The United States is self-sufficient in bituminous coal and lignite resources to meet the high range of energy demands forecast for the remainder of this century and beyond. The known or proved recoverable reserves of energy from coal in the United States are estimated to be 88% of all fuel reserves, whereas the energy reserves for oil are estimated to be 276, gas 376, shale oil 5% and uranium 2% (as now used). The demand for all forms of energy used in the United States is increasing at a rate of 3% to 4% per year. Presently, coal is competitive on a supply and cost basis with other fuels in conversion to electrical energy and as a source of energy for converting raw minerals to metals and nonmetals, but it is not competitive in transportation and other uses that demand the high flexibility that oil and gas enjoy because of their form. Coal conversion to fluid forms is essential to make it interchangeable with gas and oil to meet the markets they now occupy. Essentially, the chemical constituents that make up coal are the same hydrocarbons that make up oil and gas; it is a matter of reconstituting the proportions of hydrocarbons to make coal interchangeable with the other fuels. The production of coal has fluctuated widely between the peak production of 631 million tons in 1947 to a low of 403 million tons in 1961. Throughout this period, the total value of the production, f.o.b. mines, has averaged more than $2 billion annually. Beginning with 1962, there has been a steady upward trend in coal production with only minor fluctuations that were mainly caused by labor disputes. Output for the latest typical year, 1970, was 588 million tons. Production in 1971 was affected by a major strike and dropped to 548 million tons. Exports of coal from United States to foreign countries have increased steadily and developed into a substantial annual market for over 71 million tons per year. About 56 million tons of this is suitable for metallurgical purposes, and the remaining 15 million tons is exported for electric power generation. The only good news in the exploration sector in 1982-a year plagued by low metal prices and weak demand-was precious metals. Gold in particular remained in the forefront, as it has for at least the past three years. The reason for this is partially due to gold's seeming resilience to conventional supply side factors-such as new production-that normally influence many other metals. Also, with projected production costs of about $6.40-$9.65/g ($200¬$300/oz), modest deposits with average grades can offer an early return on capital investment and good profit potential. Keeping escalating capital costs for new mining ventures within reason has shifted gold exploration efforts in recent years. Many mining companies are seeking relatively low grade, modest tonnage, near-surface gold mineralization. This, of course, leads to lower development costs using open-pit mining methods. Recent refinements in the carbon-in-pulp recovery process also has enhanced the economics of such deposits. Slumping economic conditions certainly played a key role in shaping exploration activity last year. Nearly every major mineral-producing state recorded exploration slowdowns. In Alaska, for example, development expenditures approached the level of exploration spending for the first time in the state's history. This not only reflects major companies' decisions to move toward production but also the economic slowdown. The worldwide recession stopped Nevada's exploration and mining boom "dead in its tracks," said John Schilling, state geologist. The year was one of layoffs and closings for the state's mines and exploration offices, he reported. Similar trends were noted in most other states, especially in the West and Southwest. In the Pacific Northwest, however, exploration appeared to continue at a relatively good pace considering the metals market. In the mining geophysical community, recent advances in telecommunications and microprocessor technology are continuing to provide a positive impact. Many geophysicists have begun using satellite digital communication links to access computer systems from remote sites where using a microcomputer would be difficult. There were also major contributions made in exploration geochemistry last year. Highlights include progress in formulating mineral deposit models, geochemical exploration in glaciated and arid environments, and publication of many informative books. The following state-by-state summary and articles on geophysics and geochemistry provides a detailed view of exploration events throughout the US in 1982.

The data published in this report cover only one phase of a special study of the physical and chemical properties of Alabama coals made by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to determinations of friability, the survey included determinations of grindability, B.t.u. value, end ash-fusion temperature. Assay distillation tests, both for high- and low-temperature carbonization, and proximate and ultimate analyses were made also. However, this preliminary paper is concerned only with the results of friability tests and is issued to expedite the release of this information to the public. The friability test measures the liability of a coal to break into smaller pieces when subjected to repeated handling, as occurs in the mining, preparation, and transportation operations. Friability depends on many physical characteristics of the coal that vary not only between different seams but also in the same seam. The laboratory methods of determining friability have been developed to give a practical means of estimating degradation of size. So far as is known to the authors, no data on the friability of Alabama coals have ever been published. This paper makes available for the first tine fairly comprehensive information on this subject. Because the procedure for the tumbler test for determining the friability of coal is relatively new to the coal operators, the authors have included a complete description of it in this report.

Floating copper minerals selectively against iron minerals such as pyrite has been challenging for most copper and copper/gold deposits, and many operations continuously strive to maximise copper recovery whilst meeting target concentrate grades. Maximising grade is achieved by selectively floating copper minerals and rejecting pyrite. This challenge is to minimise copper and gold losses in the roughers if this approach is used. A flotation testing program was conducted by Bureau Veritas Minerals on a high-level pyrite bearing copper/gold ore sample to establish the potential to reject pyrite in the rougher stage, but also maximise copper and gold recoveries, and ultimately final product grades. The test program included feed characterization, rougher and open-circuit cleaner flotation as well as locked cycle flotation tests. The main variables tested for achieving selective flotation of copper and gold were collector type and pH control, through lime addition. Grind sizes used in the rougher and cleaner tests had been established from previous test work. The collectors tested were SIPX, Aerophine® 3418A, Aerophine® 3421, Aerophine® 3422, Reagent S-11192 Promoter, Reagent S-11193 Promoter and FloMin C4150. The two best performing collectors were then tested in open-circuit cleaner tests, with the optimum conditions examined further in locked cycle tests. INTRODUCTION Bureau Veritas Minerals Metallurgical Division was retained by Eldorado Gold Corporation to perform a metallurgical testing program on a high-level pyrite bearing copper/gold ore sample from a gold- copper porphyry deposit to optimize flotation reagent scheme to improve gold and copper recoveries and copper content in the concentrate. The test program included feed characterization, rougher and open-circuit cleaner flotation as well as locked cycle flotation tests. Initially, various collectors were screened in kinetic rougher tests, and over a pH range of 8.5 (i.e the natural ore pH) up to 11.5, using a primary grind size of 80% passing 120 µm. The collectors tested were SIPX (sodium isopropyl xanthate), Aerophine® 3418A, Aerophine® 3421, Aerophine® 3422, Reagent S-11192 Promoter, Reagent S-11193 Promoter and FloMin C4150. The enrichment ratio, which is the ratio of copper to sulfur in the concentrate to that in the feed, was used as proxy for rating selectivity (i.e. degree of pyrite rejection or depression).

The search for mineral deposits is a difficult high-risk enterprise whose likelihood of success is influenced by a great many factors. Among the most important of these factors are the knowledge and judgment brought to bear on an exploration problem. If, for example, a panel of expert highly experienced geologists could be convened to examine every prospect, it is at least plausible that fewer deposits would be overlooked in the exploration process. Unfortunately, whether a project is undertaken by a private company or a government agency, it is not usually feasible to convene such a panel. Our purpose in this chapter is to describe an experimental system of computer programs called PROSPECTOR that is intended ultimately to provide expert consultation on problems of mineral exploration and resource evaluation. Ideally, PROSPECTOR would serve as a surrogate for a panel of expert economic geologists. However, because the cost of computation is very low and is projected to drop by a factor of about 100 over the next two decades, systems like PROSPECTOR could be made available to the exploration enterprise at large. When consulting about a prospect, the PROSPECTOR system first gives the field geologist an opportunity to tell the program about the most significant features of the site: the major rock types, minerals, and alteration products. The system then compares these observations with a number of stored models of various types of ore deposits and forms alternative hypotheses about the types of deposits that might be present. The system next engages the geologist in a dialogue in order to obtain additional data that would be useful in resolving the multiple hypotheses. The geologist can interrupt the system at any time to obtain clarifications of questions, volunteer additional data, request the reason a particular question has been asked, or obtain a general summary of the state of the consultation process.

The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Interest is increasing in obtaining incremental improvements in mineral recoveries in flotation processes because of changing world economic conditions. Research on collector reagents, long indispensable components in flotation systems may provide the cheapest and simplest route to higher metal recoveries. Sulfhydryl group - containing compounds (-SH) and their salts, e.g., dithiophosphates, xanthates and a few other derivatives are commonly used to promote the flotation of sulfide minerals. Alkyl mercaptans, another class of sulfhydryl compounds, have long been known to have collecting properties but have been relegated to dormancy for one reason or another. This paper reports results from new investigations of alkyl mercaptans, trithiocarbonates, and a petroleum oil with a variety of western domestic and Canadian ores for copper and molybdenum sulfides recovery. Specific opportunities are pointed out to the industry for mineral recovery enhancement through the use of the proper reagent combination.

(written discussion ?).-There are few mine officials who will not say that there is, great need of vocational schools in mining communities, but the absence of success of so many of these ventures makes them wary about establishing such schools. They have neither the time nor the facilities to study the systems and to analyze the factors that have made certain schools a success and others a failure. In the first place, it is difficult to secure the proper instructors. Educators cannot make the appeal to the workmen, because of their lack of experience, and experienced men who are capable of the appeal are not usually educators, knowing nothing about the presentation of the subject. Then, too, there is ordinarily no objective in a mine school. The workman is not reached by a school that makes him merely a more valuable man to his employer, unless he can participate in the gain. An objective, as promotion or financial gain, would appeal to the man and would make for regular attendance. Usually vocational schools are run like all others-a number of subjects at a time, continued from one day to another. This is impractical for the workman, whose mind cannot work like the mind of a school boy. The school boy is spending most of his time in school work, while the man is doing it as a side issue, and he cannot be expected to pick up tonight's lesson where last night's left off. The workman is accustomed to the idea of completing a job and doing one thing at a time; his mind is trained that way, and for this reason a school that works on the principal that each lesson is a complete job, with no reference to the previous or following lesson, will go a long way toward removing one of the things that has caused many failures. The usual vocational schools .in mining communities are either very elementary, or are run by the engineering staff and, consequently, are too advanced. There is no plan between. It is believed that there is a possibility of a halfway type, but this is a subject that is large enough for a paper by itself and is entirely, too broad to be presented as a discussion.
