This article is not presented as a treatise on tin mines and mining in Bolivia. It deals primarily with the tin situation, and but fragmentary information is given regarding individual properties, generalizations being necessary in so short an article. Data on general subjects related to tin mining in Bolivia are necessarily abbreviated and very incomplete. It is believed that the references to be found in this article will help those interested to a more thorough understanding of the general conditions extant in Bolivia. Bolivia produces from one-fifth to one-fourth of the world's supply of tin. The United States consumes about one-half of the world's supply and produces practically none. Tin ore is not reduced in the United States. These facts are not generally appreciated by American mining men. Many conflicting data have been published regarding tin in Bolivia. The Transactions of the Institute contain practically no mention of this subject.' I have made a study of mines and mining conditions in the west coast republics of South America and have been particularly impressed by the possibilities of the Bolivian field.= In consequence the thought seems justified that the present meeting would present a fitting occasion to bring the tin situation in Bolivia to the attention of American mining men.

A close look at the Loyalhanna Limestone of southwestern Pennsylvania reveals a complex structural environment. Most exposures of the Loyalhanna occur along Chestnut Ridge and LaurelHill within the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Appalachian Plateaus Province. Because the Loyalhanna is rated as a super-pavement aggregate by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and because of its proximity to the population centers of southwestern Pennsylvania, the Loyalhanna has been extensively mined along these prominent anticlinal structures. Geologic and engineering analyses were performed using gas well and core logs, outcrop examinations, underground observations, and mine maps. Strata exposures from both outcrops and quarries were used to construct geologic maps, stereo net, and rose diagram projections so that the Loyalhanna’s structural environment could be understood better. Many of these structural conditions cause ground control problems at local quarries. These problems ranged from small-to-moderate sized rock falls associated with roof jointing to pillar failures associated with dipping discontinuities. Stresses ranged from tensional on structural domes where weathering dominates, to high levels of compression within structural saddles. A greater understanding of these characteristics is a prerequisite to develop engineering controls, such as improved mine layouts, pillar sizes, etc., that lessen miner exposure to these hazards.

Metal recycling and waste treatment have become common issues in various metal industries, notably, the iron and steelmaking industry and the nonferrous industry. The former tends to treat mass wastes such as municipal wastes or plastics. However, volatile compounds are condensed in dusts of their incineration processes and they should also be treated, likely by the nonferrous industry. Those "end-of-life" products contain heavy metals that might be harmful to mankind and should be handled by the non-ferrous industry. Not only revenue derived from regeneration of metals from the secondary materials but also the revenue generated from the treatment charges is a strong attraction for nonferrous industry to process secondary materials. The present study presents some statistical data of the Japanese corporations in the iron and steelmaking industry as well as the nonferrous industry on their revenues generated from processing of secondary materials. Some of the companies are now concentrating their business resources on new areas of the market. Although the quantity of waste or recyclable material is still small at present, the quantity will increase in the near future, and it is anticipated that international collaboration is required to handle the greater variety and the larger quantity of secondary materials.

In this paper, we consider open pit optimization. At present, most methods specify the economic parameters and then find the corresponding optimal pit. But as the economic environment varies (which it does regularly these days), the "optimal" pit changes and quite often changes markedly. The questions are: by how much does it change and which parameters are most influential? The functional approach of Technical Parameterization of Reserves, devised by Matheron in 1975, gives the set of all the different optimal pits, under any economic condition. It separates technical design and economic assumptions and thus permits the use of several optimality criteria when choosing the final pit, and not just the maximization of an additive profit formula. Very efficient specific algorithms are presented to obtain all the potentially optimal pits. Fluctuations in the parameters induce changes in the optimum design. Inclusion relations that exist generate very tight bounds and hence very quickly detect optima, even when using a classical adaptation of maximization techniques (graph theory, moving cone, dynamic programming ...). The advantage of Technical Parameterization of Reserves over other methods is that it provides a nested sequence of optimal pits which can then be used for mine scheduling. Many possible mining schedules can be obtained by using the family of technically optimal projects to split up the orebody. The "optimal" schedule, which is in fact a compromise between the different requirements of the economists, the mine planner and the metallurgist, can be chosen from within the wide scope of possibilities. A practical example of mine scheduling for a chromite mine is presented in detail.

Esta técnica possui eficiência na avaliação, possibilidade de participação dos stakeholders/decisores nas fases de desenvolvimento e decisão, proporcionando maior legitimidade do processo e compromisso na implementação dos resultados.

Over the past 75 years, the mining of platinum has predominantly focused on the Merensky Reef horizon in the western Bushveld region of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) of South Africa (Figure 1). The orebody is relatively flat dipping at 10¦ to 25¦, narrow tabular in shape and has been mined to a maximum depth of some 1600 m within Anglo Platinum. This has resulted in the installation of up to four generations of shaft systems as mining progressed into reserves at greater depth. In recent years, with the improvement in processing technology and improved economics, in particular with the improved price of palladium, the mining of the UG2 Chromitite Reef is proving economically viable. The UG2 Chromitite Reef occurs below the Merensky Reef in the succession and the normal separation varies from 15 m to 400 m, with the largest separation between the reefs occurring in the eastern region of the BIC. The UG2 Chromitite Reef horizon is now being accessed from existing Merensky mining infrastructure by cross-cutting back through the stratigraphy where appropriate, or by establishing new decline cluster systems from surface, along the extensive strike length of the various mining properties. These declines are generally established utilising mechanised mining techniques. This paper gives an overview of the techno-economic approaches considered and evaluated for the selection of the optimum mining and shaft systems. More specifically, the paper reviews the design parameters used, techno-economics, conveyor versus haul alternatives, logistics simulations, capital costs, system performance, time to market or ramp-up success, important system differences and lessons learnt.

Evaluation of reserves on a production scale within a shear-hosted gold deposit is complicated by the nature of the mineralisation itself. The 'payable' ground seems to be confined to areas with intense shearing, while the remainder of the deposit is characterised by 'background' mineralisation at a very low level.

Gold plant performance during the start-up period, which extends until capacity production is sustained, has a major impact on the internal rate of return and the net present value of gold projects regardless of mining and processing configurations. The start-up period experiences substandard production, extra expenses, and sometimes reduced recovery. This results in lost profits, a portion of which are recouped at the end of the life of the mine. Poor start-up performance can put projects into financial jeopardy. The gold mining industry regularly experiences start-ups ranging from good to poor. Problem areas, which affect start-up performance, include shortcomings in ore reserve sampling and testing, equipment design and installation, untrained plant operators, inability to cope with problems which arise, and organization of the maintenance program. An investment, equal to 0.5% to 1.0% of plant capital cost, in programs to prepare for start-up, in advance, is recommended. Investment in such a program will make a good start-up possible. Without it the best result which can normally be expected is a fair start-up. Developers of new gold mines are urged to compare the cost of this investment with the anticipated increase in project net present value. Funds for this investment should be included in feasibility studies.

The Mississippi river was discovered by French explorers that came southwestward, by way of the Great Lakes, from eastern Canada. Vignan, Joliet, De Champlain, and others of the French pioneers in the first half of the seventeenth century, dreamed of a short cut to China by means of the great waterways they explored. In a geographical book published in London in 1726 by Daniel Coxe an account is given of "a new and curious discovery and relation betwixt the river Meschachebe [Mississippi] and the South Sea, which separates America from China, by means of several large rivers and lakes". Louis Joliet, a fur-trader, and Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, reached the Mississippi and paddled their canoes on its broad waters on June 17, 1673.* They descended the river as far as the entry of the Arkansas tributary, and then returned overland to Canada, being deterred from going farther south by reason of Indian hostility. Several years later Robert de La Salle, a French trader, starting from Quebec, went westward to Lake Michigan and thence to the Illinois river, which he and his comrades descended in their canoes to the junction with the Mississippi, and then followed it to the sea. They reached the Gulf of Mexico on April 9, 1682. Thus the great central waterway of North America was made known. These French-Canadian voyageurs, or boatmen, traded with the Indians for furs in the Upper Mississippi valley, and when in need of bullets they noticed the outcrops of lead ore, from which, probably in the last decade of the seventeenth

The highly-mineralized 43,700-ha Rapid River study area, on the southeast side of Hells Canyon Wilderness and west of the village of Cuprum, in Adams County, western-Idaho, was investigated in 1992 by the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) in conjunction with its Idaho Land Assessment Program. The 1992 study updated data gathered during the USBM's 1974-76 Wilderness investigation. The studies consisted of the evaluation of 61 mineralized sites and the estimations of tonnages, grades, and minability of these sites. Most of the sites studied are in two mineralized locales--Windy Ridge and Jackley Mountain. A few isolated sites, peripheral to the two locales, were also examined. The 61 sites contained more than 340 mine and prospect workings, including about 10,300 meters (34,000 feet) of underground workings, plus 134 drill holes.

The mining industry represents a small part of the international economy. Comprising few large companies, the industry exhibits volatile returns and over the past 25 years has failed to produce a long-term return that meets its cost of capital. It is not surprising, therefore, that the minerals extraction and processing industry is under considerable pressure from the investment community to lift its game. Management and boards are responding to this pressure by implementing more exacting cost control measures, capital management programs and through the process of consolidation. However, the cost of capital to the industry appears to have increased in recent years and investor attention seems to be preoccupied with the ænewÆ economy. Both of these influences will conspire to raise the bar for acceptable industry economic performance. This paper provides a useful snapshot of the minerals and extraction industry as it enters the 21st century. It remains cautious about future performance other than to conclude that single digit returns are likely to prevail, albeit at higher levels than over the past 25 years.

The acidophilic and chemolithotrophic Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria grown in the presence of soluble ferrous ions and solid substrates (sulfur, pyrite and chalcopyrite) as their energy source have been used in the investigations. The cell surfaces are characterised by zeta-potential, contact angle, FT-IR and FT-Raman studies. The adsorption isotherms of the cells on pyrite and chalcopyrite indicate that the adsorption begins on pyrite at a much lower equilibrium cell population than on chalcopyrite. The isotherms tend to level off at a cell adsorption density corresponding to a horizontal monolayer coverage when the geometrical dimensions of the cells are considered. In the presence of cells, the xanthate flotation of pyrite completely depressed, whereas chalcopyrite flotation is unaffected. The results suggest that chalcopyrite can be selectively floated from pyrite, also at a neutral pH region, in the presence of T. ferrooxidans cells.

In situ mining and extraction is one of the Frontier Technologies that is destined to play an increasingly important role in the recovery of metals and minerals in the future. This premise is based on increasing costs of labor and energy, increasing awareness of environmental considerations and decreasing ore grades in the United States. Up to now, in situ mining has been successfully applied to a few favorable situations for the extraction of some evaporites, copper and uranium. However, because of its unique technical, environmental and economic advantages, this versa tile technology will find broader applications for the recovery of above commodities as well as for others which are currently extracted by hydrometallurgical means. This paper traces the development of in situ mining and extraction; stresses its dependence on interdisciplinary science and engineering; discusses its theoretical, practical and economic aspects; and finally presents potential applications of this Frontier Technology.

Titanium is a metal of increasing worldwide strategic importance. The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech of the University of Montana is currently directing two titanium research initiatives. The first program, Titanium Extraction Mining and Process Engineering Initiative (TEMPER), is focused on producing low cost titanium through the identification and development of new mining, beneficiation and extraction technologies which will significantly reduce the cost of titanium production. This will directly benefit worldwide commercial applications. Secondly, CAMP is evaluating new technologies for fabrication of titanium utilizing the Free Form Titanium Fabrication (FFTF) initiative. These technologies may drastically reduce the cost and time to manufacture titanium components. Because of the high strength to weight ratio of titanium coupled with its superior corrosion characteristics, these programs will be of vital importance to expanding the commercial and strategic applications of titanium. An overview of these two new titanium initiatives will be presented in this paper.

The Panhandle area of northwest Texas embraces the northern portion of the Permian Basin of Texas as well as a considerable portion of the western part of the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma. For the purpose of this report it will include in addition to the 20 counties of the Panhandle proper the two tiers of counties lying to the south, a total area of about 32,000 square miles. Crossing the Texas Panhandle diagonally from northwest to southeast is the Amarillo Arch, related to which is all of the production discovered to date. Oil Production Up to Jan. 1, 1930, the Panhandle has produced about 125,000,000 bbl. of oil. The peak yearly production occurred in 1927, during which period 49,000,000 bbl. were produced. In 1928 the production fell to 25,000,000 bbl., but in 1929, on account of important discoveries in Gray County, the total increased to 31,000,000 bbl. To date Hutchinson County has produced 64 per cent. of the total. Table 1 shows the total yearly production by counties. The present production of the Panhandle is 100,500 bbl. from 1745 wells or an average of 57.6 bbl. per well compared to a production on Jan. 1, 1929, of 59,748 bbl. from 1468 wells or an average of 40.7 bbl. per well. This report outlines the experience of Australian mining operators in dealing with large falls of roof in advance of longwall supports. Previous and present techniques used for face stabilisation have been described, together with an analysis of [actors which contributed to the roof falls, in each case. Attention has been focused on the stabilisation technique used at Angus Place Colliery, where the face coal was successfully reinforced by injecting chemical foam into Lite fractured areas. Although considered to be one of the worst roof falls in the history of Australian longwalls (60 m in length and up to 10 in in height), it was subsequently possible to resume cutting in Longwall 9 two weeks after the foam injection. A preliminary schedule of work involving the 'strata replacement' method, is also discussed. It has been based substantially on experience gained with cementitious supports, principally by ACIRL and Monier Resources.

"This paper investigated the structure evolution and phase formation ofFe-(11,13,15wt.%)Mn alloy under near-rapid solidification conditions. It is found that the area ratio of equiaxed zone in the Fe-13Mn alloy is the largest. And the primary dendrite arm spacing of Fe-(11,13,15wt.%)Mn alloy increased clearly with increasing distance from the surface. The volume percentage of HCP phase increased with increasing manganese content in the range from 11 pct to 15pct.IntroductionThe developing trend of automobile is the energy conservation, enviromnent protection, light weight, and high security. So the material would be required to the higher strength, higher plasticity and more likely to processing of automotive steel. Fe-Mn based alloys is considered as a potential material to the third generation automobile steel for its high damping performance [1], good mechanical properties [2-3], and high young's modulus [4]. And it is important that metastable HCP phases of Fe-Mn based alloys, which attracts technological interest for theoretical and experimental research [5-6].Metastable materials have been extensively used in the area of iron steels. Among various fabrication methods for high performance materials, rapid solidification is one of most popular ways to produce advanced materials by obtaining metastable phases. The solidification of metals in metastable phases provides access to an extended range of materials properties with novel properties [7]. Thus, in this work, Fe-Mn alloy metastable materials prepared by near rapid solidification is studied."

The mineral pulp as it passes through grinding-classification, flotation and solid-liquid separation is examined in the context of it being a particulate fluid. By focussing on the complex viscosity and yield stress of the fluid, new control strategies are discussed. The mineral-particulate fluid is dominatred by non-Newtonian rheology (ie shear thinning, shear thickening, shear yield stress and compressive yield strength). The control of this Theology is seen to be dependent on the fundamental practice-particle interaction forces and with adequate information, it is possible to use the complex shear properties to advantage. The advantages, in terms of final waste and concentrate management, to high weight per cent solids in the mineral particulate fluid, are explored and control strategies outlined.

If one is to place any credence at all in the reports published in the daily press, the subject of conservation has been a very lively topic of conversation during the past 60 days, and it does not appear that the temperature of the summer months has been in any way moderated by the discussion. It is a subject in which we are all vitally interested and to which, so far as our mineral resources are concerned, both the Institute and the Geological Survey have liberally contributed. The report of the National Conservation Commission, appointed by President Roosevelt, contains a series of papers on the conservation of mineral resources, all of which were prepared by members of the Geological Survey and were compiled largely from information previously collected by that Federal bureau in the performance of its regular duties.
