"A process sample of old copper-containing tailings (-2.0+0 mm) from an iron-ore plant was tested in TOMS institute in order to develop a process for copper concentrate production. The study of tailings material composition indicated that -0.2+0 mm fraction was efficient and contained 97.26% of copper. Copper is predominantly concentrated in chalcopyrite which is present both in free form and in intergrowth with ore and rock-forming minerals. Study of chalcopyrite using an optical microscope and Qemscan SEM determined that the most grains surface was covered with oxide films. Additionally, a lot of grains had micropores on their surfaces that indicated a partial mineral leaching. The oxide films did not make it possible to float copper minerals from head material. It was recommended to apply an attrition operation to restore chalcopyrite floatability. In order to increase selectivity a regrinding stage for a primary copper concentrate was introduced to obtain P80 26 um. Taking these recommendations into account a flotation flowsheet was developed to process the old Cu-containing tailings. The flowsheet allowed us to obtain a concentrate with 23.5% Cu content at 71.5% recovery.INTRODUCTIONStudy of material composition is an important prerequisite for development of a minerals processing technology. Mineralogical study contributes to search for an efficient technology to recover valuables and for prospective methods of minerals processing.The use of such up-to-date analysis methods and equipment as Qemscan and Mineral-C7 allows one to determine minerals size, liberation degree, and mineral associations. Mineralogical data can reveal reasons for hard processing of minerals prior to development of the process.The advanced process mineralogical methods used to study Cu-bearing pond tailings indicated several factors that influenced development of the process. The first one is a barren size fraction which is to be removed from the process in order to considerably reduce the costs connected with grinding. The second is the presence of films on chalcopyrite surface; in this context, a preliminary attrition of the material was recommended. The third factor is finely disseminated Cu minerals in sulphide and in the rock, which predetermined selection of particle size for flotation. All these data led to significant decrease in time required to develop the process technology. The developed process flowsheet based on the obtained mineralogical data is present in Figure 1."

INTRODUCTION The Washington, D.C. rapid transit system (METRO) when completed will consist of 98 miles of double track rail. Fifteen miles will be tunneled in rock and 12 large underground rock chambers will be constructed at station locations. The University of Illinois is under contract to Metro to provide observations and instrumentation services in the initial phase of construction. The work is coordinated through DeLeuw, Cather & Co., the General Engineering Consultant to Metro. The program is designed to monitor construction conditions as well as to provide information useful for the design of future rock tunnels and rock chambers in the Metro system. This paper presents the results of observations in the rock tunnels constructed to date. Most of the observations are in a 5000-ft-long, 30-ft-wide, double track tunnel in downtown Washington, D.C. Observations were also made in single track tunnels, shafts, enlargement areas, and pilot tunnels, and are being made in a large rock chamber 700 ft long, 76 ft wide, and constructed at shallow depth in a schistose gneiss. One of the major objectives of the observational program was to determine the orientation and character of joints and shear zones and to evaluate their effect on support requirements for various tunnel orientations and configurations. The consistency of geologic features throughout the Washington area has made the results of the initial study applicable to evaluation of support requirements on future tunnel contracts. The first section of this paper summarizes the geologic conditions in the tunnel and their effect on overbreak and rock movement.

"INTRODUCTION At the request of Elmer Burch, of Taos, N. Mex., the Apache mica mine was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. As the result of this examination, the Bureau of Mines proposed to extend an adit to the projection of the mica-bearing dike. The Federal Geological Survey then prepared a topographic and geologic map of the property. This information and consultations with members of the Survey 3/ assisted in determining the course and extent of the exploratory work. The author supervised the work, which was done from January to May 1944.Title to the property was in litigation during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation. Conrad Johnson, of La Madera, N. Mex., was contesting the valley of Burch's claim location covering the Apache mine. Johnson was a prior claimant. A map made during mining operations prior to 1929, showing all mine workings, was in the possession of Johnson, but he would not produce it for inspection as long as his title to the property was in doubt. The course of the adit extension was therefore controlled by the best information and judgment otherwise obtainable."

The extremely sluggish oxidation of steel scrap was appreciably accelerated when the charge was pretreated in aqueous solutions of sodium metavanadate or sodium molybdate. The degree of oxidation acceleration was inversely correlated with the melting point of the promoter oxide possessing the highest valency. The magnitude of oxidation enhancement exhibited a systematic inverse dependence on the duration of pickling processes; mere dipping of the oxidizable charge in the vanadate bath was most effective. In general, the rate of steel scrap oxidation increased with increasing concentration of the pickling reagent. The results are explained on the basis of the hydrolytic decomposition of the pickling agent with subsequent slow interaction with the metal surface, coupled with the tendency of vanadium to form polyanions in alkaline media. The data not only served to elucidate the mechanism by which catastrophic oxidation takes place, but also showed that the accelerating species need not be alloyed with the oxidizable metal; surface impregnation by minute amounts of the accelerating species can still produce catastrophic effects.

INTRODUCTION The Keystone Tunnel project consists of widening an existing 7.3 m-wide (24 ft) highway tunnel to a width of 13.7 m (45 ft) to provide a three-lane, two-directional highway tunnel. The 13.7 m-wide tunnel was excavated in a staged drill-and-blast sequence through foliated schist, and was supported using pattern rock reinforcement and shotcrete. Notable project features are: the low vertical cover over the tunnel is less than the span of the opening; the project is the second instance where the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has accepted rock reinforcement as a permanent support element; and the project is the first instance where the FHWA is accepting shotcrete as the final interior surface of the tunnel. This paper covers the design and construction phases of the project. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) retained Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) to evaluate the feasibility, prepare construction plans and specifications, and provide construction management services for the widening of the Keystone Tunnel. The tunnel is located in the Black Hills National Forest area of South Dakota near the southwest corner of the state. The Keystone Tunnel is on U.S. Highway 16A, about 0.8 km (1/2 mile) north of Keystone which is approximately 32 km (20 miles) south of Rapid City (Figure 1). Highway 16A serves as an important transportation link between Rapid City and the Mount Rushmore National Monument which is located about 2 miles west of Keystone. Superficial observation of the petroleum stabilization movement in 1932 is disappointing. Threatened overproduction persisted; waste continued; proration was violated; gasoline taxes were evaded; and, as a consequence, chaos threatened the industry as the year drew to a close. However, comparison of the movement in 1932 with its beginning a few years ago, and analyses of those influences that promote its growth as well as those which retard it, disclose some reasons for encouragement. Stabilization, as we see it, is not merely a mechanical engineering problem. It involves social engineering. By which we do not mean it is possible, or even desirable, to change the nature of men, but rather that it is possible to set up procedure that will avoid causing them to clash. It comprehends consideration of physical objects that is clearly within the field of the engineer, but it considers them only in relation to their distribution, utilization and control in harmony with philosophies that motivate men and shape current conceptions of right and wrong, or of justice and injustice if those terms be deemed more acceptable. Stabilization cannot be effected without utilizing the knowledge of the engineer, but neither can it be effected without utilizing more than comes within his traditional field of activity. In discussing the problem herein we shall endeavor to treat it briefly from that consolidated viewpoint. Rapid fluctuations in supply have characterized the oil industry from its beginning; yet only within the past ten years has an understanding begun to develop regarding the extent of waste—the degree of dissipation of natural resources—that attends the operation of the industry under the practices and laws which control it in the United States. The extent and regrettable consequences of those wastes, their underlying causes and the ease with which they could be prevented are not yet generally understood even within the industry. This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

THIS paper is the second of a series on the effect of various elements on hot-working characteristics of Fe-C alloys to be issued by this laboratory. The investigations being conducted at the Ferroalloy Research Branch of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Redding, Calif., involve fundamental research on the effects of various alloying materials and impurities on the physical properties of high purity Fe-C alloys. This paper deals with the determination of the limit of forgeability of steels containing varying amounts of manganese and sulphur. A paper discussing the hot-working characteristics and the physical properties of the forgeable alloys is being prepared. One of the principal impurities in all steels is sulphur.. The phenomenon, hot-shortness, commonly attributed to sulphur, has long been a source of expense and inconvenience to both the maker and user of steels. In steelmaking practice, this effect of sulphur has been overcome by the addition of manganese which, apparently, acts as a desulphurizer. Manganese is also used as a deoxidizer and alloying material. The critical and strategic position of man- ganese gives added importance to research which may contribute to its conservation and more effective utilization. It is not the purpose or intention in the present paper to give any explanation of the mechanism of either hot-shortness or its prevention but rather to report the results of forging high purity Fe-C alloys of the range of compositions near the limit of hot-forgeability. Temperatures for each phase of reduction were duplicated within 20" to 30°F for all tests. The starting material was sponge iron, which, after melting and purification, gave a high purity iron containing about 0.001 pct each of silicon and phosphorus. Scrap iron was not considered suitable because of its high percentage of contaminants and wide variation in analyses. The sponge iron was melted and refined for melting stock in a three-phase, direct-arc, size ST, Moore Rapid Lectromelt furnace with a 500 kva rating as described in the preceding paper. Additives were carefully selected to avoid addition of contaminants. The sulphur was added as resublimed flowers of sulphur or purified roll sulphur of analytical grade. The manganese used was dehydrogenated high purity electrolytic material produced by the Bureau of Mines plant at Boulder City, Nev. High purity aluminum in the form of wire was used for deoxidation. The limestone was obtained locally and had the following analysis: CaO, 53.7 pct; MgO, 0.8; ignition loss, 42.4; R2O3, 0.2; SiO2,3.0; and P2O5, 0.014.

Rusk County is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Wisconsin, roughly 130 miles east of Minneapolis (Figure 1). The topography is generally flat with dairy farming the principal activity. Forest and swamp lands are common, as well as pasture and cultivated ground. Rusk County falls near the southern terminus of the Precambrian Shield and is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift. Outcrops are quite rare, but the few available exposures indicate that the subsurface is comprised of steeply dipping metamorphosed volcanics and sediments of Early Proterozoic age. A thin section of flatlying Cambrian sandstone is sometimes found directly under the glacial till. The depth to Precambrian basement has been recorded to be as great as 150 feet beneath the surface.

Este trabalho objetiva a descrição dos diferentes desempenhos sob corrosão de uma junta soldada de uma tubulação de aço carbono obtida pelos consumíveis ER 70S-3 e ER 80S-Ni2, empregada em plataformas offshore. Amostras de tubos e chapas de aço carbono foram soldadas, através do processo TIG, empregando tais consumíveis, e submetidas a ensaio de corrosão acelerada por perda de massa em uma cuba com fluxo constante de água destilada e ácido sulfúrico a 98%. Posteriormente, as amostras foram caracterizadas de modo a quantificar as possíveis alterações nas características mecânicas, estruturais e superficiais. O resultado final foi que a corrosão ocasionada na junta com o consumível ER 80S-Ni2 apresentou características diferenciadas e mais deletérias ao desempenho estrutural do material, apesar de ser o consumível inicialmente recomendado para a aplicação.

The following is an extract of the Engineers' licensing law recently passed by the Colorado legislature; it went into force July 10. On the board of examiners are representatives of the four national societies. R. J. Grant, of Denver, represents the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; H. I. Reid, of Colorado Springs, the. American Society of Civil Engineers; H. S. Sands, of Denver, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers; and Frank E. Shepard, of Denver, the American Society of Mechanical Engineering. Within sixty clays after the taking effect of this act the Governor of the state shall appoint a State Board of Engineer Examiners, to be composed of five members, who shall be legal residents of the state of Colorado and who shall have been engaged in the practice of engineering for at least ten years. Upon the expiration of the term of any members other than the state engineer the governor shall appoint their successors for a term of four years, from a list of five nominees elected by the licensed engineers acting in a general assembly called together for this purpose by the president of the board. Such assembly shall be held in the month of January next preceding the expiration of the terms of any members. The Board of Examiners shall adopt all necessary rules, regulations and by-laws to govern its proceedings, not inconsistent with this act or the laws of the state or of the United States.

Given: One large, but dated open-pit copper mine and processing plants, down about one third in production capacity in decade because of declining ore grade. Solve for: Restoration of former peak capacity without further losses during period of reconstruction. That is the problem that Kennecott's Utah Cop- per Division began solving in 1963. Most of the work went to a task force of engineers, several of whom were plucked out of line jobs and assigned to the so-called "Expansion Project" for the duration. There was no doubt from the beginning that effective cooperation between Expansion Project engineers and operators was critical to success, and personnel was chosen accordingly. This foresight paid off. The Expansion Project is all but complete, and the Utah Copper Division is returning to its rated capacity of 300,000 tons per year of copper metal.

Future resources of aluminum may require the utilization of low grade ores to provide a more permanent protection for the nation. Aluminum minerals such as cloy, shale, and high iron laterites may become important sources. An evaluation of reserves is given. New laboratory results are reported on the Vereinigte desilication process. THIS report on future resources of aluminum metal emphasizes the necessity for investigating utilization of low grade potential ores to provide more permanent protection for the nation. Partial or complete interruption of the importation of high grade aluminum ores must be given consideration. Ultimately, aluminum minerals such as clay, shale, and high iron laterites may become the principal sources of aluminum. The development of extractive processes for treating these low grade materials is a step in long-range national preparedness that should receive more attention. In formulating such processes, the application of beneficiation methods for the purpose of classifying the several types of minerals before subjecting each type to the more expensive extractive procedures should be considered, and a careful survey of the basic factors of power sources, transportation facilities, and sources of raw material should be made. Domestic Bauxite Resources Of the domestic supply of current, treatable-grade bauxite, 95 pct comes from Arkansas. The present reserve of Arkansas bauxite suitable for metal production, including abrasive-grade, Bayer-grade, and modified Bayer-grade ores, is 34,000,000 tons. The total reserve of bauxite of all grades is approximately 75,000,000 tons. Reserves are estimated on a mined and dried basis. Data available to the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to 1949 were used in preparing Table I, which shows a breakdown by grades of bauxite for about a half of the reserves of the state. The modified Bayer ore, 10,555,500 long dry tons, is based on a cutoff of 8 to 15 pct silica. The sub- marginal 10,074,700 long dry tons is assumed to contain more than 40 pct gibbsite, more than 15 pct silica, and less than 32 pct available alumina. A considerable amount of this low grade material was consumed in 1949 and 1950. Additional tonnages of bauxitic and kaolinitic clays are indicated by the Bureau of Mines drilling project.' Applying a 50 pct factor to arrive at long tons mined and dried, the results of this project are approximately 31,500,000 tons kaolinitic clay at +35 pct Al²O3 and 11,800,000 tons kaolinitic clay at 20 to 35 pct A1,0,. Total reserves of kaolinitic clays are probably quite extensive—several times the reserves shown in the Bureau's work. Total reserves of bauxitic and high iron clays from the drilling program and previously established figures are 63,980,000 tons. The mineral dressing methods,' the lime-sinter process, he lime-sinter modification of the Pederson process," the lime-soda sinter process,"-' and the Alcoa combination processa. have been described in the literature and will not be elaborated upon here. The less familiar Vereinigte Aluminium-Werke process used by the Germans during World War 11 may require some amplification.
