Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants for the dissolution of chalcopyrite, allowing for the formation of stable ammine complexes with copper while rejecting iron. Chalcopyrite dissolution in ammoniacal solutions is reviewed from literature, and results from a recently completed study evaluating it through electrochemical and controlled leach studies are discussed. Ammoniacal leaching of copper ores dates back to 1916 in the leaching of low grade copper ores in the Kennecott leaching plant and in the Calumet and Hecla mines, followed by the commercialisation of the Sherrit Gordon process for the ammoniacal leaching of sulphide copper ores in 1948. Since then ammoniacal leaching has received intermittent focus from researchers with the development of the Anaconda’s Arbiter process and the unsuccessful Escondida process. In these leaching processes, the formation of surface deposits has historically been reported to result in the passivation of the chalcopyrite surfaces, whereas oxygen mass transfer in solutions has been the focus of process design improvements. Results of studies on high grade chalcopyrite material is presented in this paper which show that although a surface deposit was formed, it did not result in the passivation of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions, and that while oxygen transfer is critical, it is not the direct oxidant in the reaction. INTRODUCTION Ammonia and its salts have been used in the hydrometallurgical treatment of non-ferrous metals such as copper, cobalt and nickel from oxide ores. Its chemistry allows for the selective dissolution of desired metals, leaving behind gangue including iron. Chalcopyrite is a copper sulphide ore known to be very stable and hence recalcitrant to many hydrometallurgical processing methods. Thus, the dissolution of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research. The dissolution of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions is possible due to the stabilisation of copper(I) and copper (II) ions by ammonia in alkaline media. Ammonia has become more attractive as a lixiviant during the present socio-economic climate due to its low toxicity, relatively low cost and ease of regeneration by evaporation (Meng & Han, 1996). Ammonia processes are ideal when the gangue minerals are acid consuming e.g. with calcareous or dolomitic gangue (Paynter, 1973).

Este estudo tem por objetivo caracterizar o pó de balão proveniente de uma siderúrgica do estado do Pará visando a sua incorporação em argilas para produção de blocos. O resíduo passou pela etapa de beneficiamento e, depois, foi realizada a difração de raios-X (DRX) e fluorescência de raios-X (FRX). Além disso, realizou-se também a análise morfológica por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os resultados mostraram que hematita, magnetita, goethita são as fases predominantes. A análise química por FRX mostrou que o resíduo apresenta baixos teores de sílica (SiO2) e alumina (Al2O3) associados a elevados teores de óxido de ferro III (Fe2O3). Dessa forma, a caracterização do pó de balão mostrou que esse resíduo apresenta-se como um potencial constituinte mássico cerâmico e que os elevados teores de óxido ferro podem contribuir para melhorar a cor dos produtos finais.

The following resolution was prepared, by the War Minerals Committee and was submitted by it to the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, asking that it be passed by the Board and used to the best advantage to secure the end desired. WHEREAS, the steel industry of the United States is almost entirely dependent on the importation of foreign manganese ores, the consumption of which for the year 1918, it is estimated, will exceed 850,000 tons; and WHEREAS, the ships now engaged in transportation, especially from Brazil, are needed with ever increasing urgency for supplying our Army and Navy forces abroad; and WHEREAS, much shipping may be spared from manganese transportation and the domestic sources of manganese may be utilized, provided the steel manufacturers of the United States will cooperate to this end by taking advantage of the possibility, in open-hearth and Bessemer practice, of so called "residual" manganese, and by using spiegeleisen instead of ferromanganese, thereby following the example already set by three large and prominent steel producers; BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers urges the steel manufacturers of America, for patriotic reasons, to give immediate consideration to the development and utilization of domestic manganese ores; to use no ferromanganese, except for the manufacture of grades of steel below 0.15 per cent. carbon, to use domestic ores whenever possible in place of the high-grade imported ores; and to urge their associates and colleagues in this and other possible ways, to vie with one another in releasing ships for importation of any materials that cannot be secured or produced in this country.

The partial molal free energy of Cd in each of the four intermediate phases, Cd3 Cu, Cd8 Cu5, Cd3Cu4, and CdCu2 is determined using the Knudsen vapor pressure technique. Measurements are made also within the two-phase regions, and thus the variation in FCd is now known across the entire phase diagram. The absolute values are all less the 2.0 kcal and increase regularly with increasing Cd concentration. The small absolute value of the free energy precludes the possibility of obtaining highly accurate values; nevertheless, the results are compatible with those previously reported for the liquid phase. Additional results are reported concerning the lattice parameters of the 6, E, and b phases. THE elements Cu and Cd combine to form four intermediate phases which are designated* and E and which include respectively the following inter metallic compounds: CdCu2, Cd3Cu4, Cd3 Cu5, and Cd3 Cu. The extent of each phase with respect to temperature and composition is shown in Fig. 1 which is the equilibrium diagram drawn according to Hansen.1 All four phases are brittle, and most probably are true intermetallic compounds. Only the crystal structure of the 6 phase has been thoroughly investigated.2,3 The structure is cubic and isotypic with y brass. The structure of Cd3 Cu has not been previously reported, It is hexagonal with a = 8.11 and c = 8.76 0.02Å and the structure is presently being determined.* The compounds Cd3 Cu4 and CdCu, have been each previously the subject of a single investigation. Cd3Cu, is presumed to be cubic4 with the space group Fd3m, whereas CdCu2 is hexagonal2 with the C14-type structure. Cu2 Cd is found by X-ray analysis to be hexagonat with lattice parameters a = 5.00A and c = 16.17Å. The material appears to be pure Cu2Cd as all reflections could be indexed on the basis of the single hexagonal structure. These values disagree with those of Kripyakevich and coworkers5 who report a = 4.96Å and c = 7.98Å. Their investi-

Carbon in pig iron is not only essential but, ordinarily, it is the most abundant metalloid present; iron without carbon could not be pig iron. Carbon in pig iron has been accepted, but seldom specified. How it gets into the pig iron as it is being smelted in the blast furnace, and why just about so much of it enters into the pig iron in certain blast furnaces, and more of it,; or less of it, enters the pig iron in other blast furnaces, or in the same blast furnace under varying conditions, are problems that have not yet been satisfactorily solved. During my own practical blast-furnace experience, I collected analyses of pig iron, including the graphitic and combined carbon, and recorded them in reference to the percentage of silicon present, having in mind the generally accepted explanation that "silicon drove out the carbon." To this actual experience, I have added some analyses given to me by J. B. Rogers, who was superintendent of the blast furnaces of the Ashland Iron & Mining Co., Ashland, Ky., and was making "silvery iron" at the time. These analyses are shown in Table 1. The analyses do not tell the whole story, but they show that with Pocahontas beehive coke, the total carbon was generally high. The data relating to the composition of the slag are lacking but my own customary practice was to have a rather basic slag. During my experience in making pig iron for the Bessemer and open-hearth departments, there were times when the steel men would complain about some mysterious quality in the pig iron that caused bad steel, in spite of the fact that the percentages of silicon, sulfur, phosphorus and manganese were within the specifications. Many reasons were advanced for this undetermined "poison" in the pig iron, but the favorite one offered by the steel men was that the blast-furnace man had "oxidized" the pig iron at the tuyeres in his eagerness to get big production and low cost. To these complaints of the users of steel-making pig irons were added those of the gray iron-foundry men and the malleable iron men. These groups are unaninlous in their conclusions that the trouble lies with the blast-furnace men; but there is not yet any harmonious conclusion as to the exact cause and remedy.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Ventilation Division continues to evaluate proposed explosion-resistant seal designs. There are currently eleven specific designs for explosion-resistant seals that are suitable for construction in underground coal mines. Seal construction in operating mines must be equivalent to those constructed in the Experimental Mine during the explosion testing program. Accidental failures of seals have occurred due to explosion pressures below 138 Kpa (20 psi). The possibility exists that the failed seals were not properly constructed. Also, conditions in the vicinity of the seals may change. Water may accumulate against the seals, heave or sag may cause detrimental effects on the seals, and sloughage of the ribs may negate hitching. If seals are not properly installed or maintained, they could fail when subjected to explosion pressures. If seals fail for any reason, the possibility exists for explosion propagation throughout large areas of the mine. There could be catastrophic consequences to an event of this nature. This report will present a limited discussion on the construction of each of these seals and will address related issues.

The major Permian coal deposits of N.S.W. are in the Sydney-Bowen Basin and associated small deposits occur in structurally isolated areas; a further deposit is present in the Oaklands Basin. - The Sydney-Bowen Basin in New South Wales comprises the sub basins, the Sydney Basin and the Gunnedah Basin. Coal measures in these basins are near the top of the Permian succession and within and below an underlying marine sequence. The coal deposits can be conveniently described in units in which the coal geology is homogeneous. The Clyde Coal Measures and Yarrunga Coal Measures contain no seams of economic significance and occur beneath the marine beds in the south of the Sydney Basin. The Greta Coal Measures are economically significant and represent a brief interlude in the marine sequence in the north of the Sydney Basin and equivalents are present in the east of the Gunnedah Basin. The Tomago Coal Measures crop out above the marine sequence east from the Lochinvar Anticline and dip southeast to uneconomic depths. The Newcastle Coal Measures are historically and economically very important and overlie the Tomago Coal Measures and these measures will continue to be important although future mining will be faced with greater depths. To the west of the Lochinvar Anticline the Singleton Coal Measures, equivalent to the Tomago and Newcastle Coal Measures, crop out. This unit represents the thickest development of coal measures in the State and has a very large potential for both open cut and underground mining. Equivalents of the Singleton Coal Measures, the Black Jack Coal Measures and the Booroomin Group crop out on the east side of the Gunnedah Basin and probably are widespread across the Basin. They have less economic potential than the Singleton Coal Measures. In the southwest of the Gunnedah Basin, Illawarra/Singleton Coal Measures crop out over extensive areas and possibly have a large potential for underground mining under low cover. The Illawarra Coal Measures are exposed along the western margin of the Sydney Basin and thicken as they dip into the Basin across a shelf. The outcrop area is currently mined and the shelf has considerable potential for future mining. The highest rank coals in the State are in the Illawarra Coal Measures in the south of the Sydney Basin. The deepest coal mining is in this area and its continuing success is of great importance to the future exploitation of the resources of the Basin. The Tomago, Newcastle, Singleton and Illawarra Coal Measures extend into and meet in the central area of the Sydney Basin but they are under thick cover and are not considered to be economic at present. Permian coal measures occur in isolated areas in the New England Fold Belt and have limited economic potential. The Oaklands Basin in the south of the State contains a large reserve of low rank coal.

HAVING previously told you about lodestone, azure, emery, and manganese, things that perhaps belong more properly to the stones than to the metals, the desire has come to me to describe rock crystal as well and, with this, some of the better-known gems, although they are things that are not classified with metals, as far as I know, or even with the serniminerals. In truth, they are neither one nor the other, but they are stones and have the nature of stones. But let them be what they may, in order to avoid straying from the subject we have begun, we shall say that they have mineral properties in their species, as for instance, in respect to their colors. It would seem an error to me if, while I am giving you information on so many other useful things, I did not give you this as well, if for no other reason than because it is a fine accomplishment for a gentleman to have some knowledge concerning gems. Thus since I have proposed to do this, beginning to speak of crystal, I tell you that it is a lustrous, transparent, and limpid stone, composed by Nature with a predominance of wateriness. Thus, contrary to the order of natural things, it has been believed by many that Nature has generated it of pure water by means of a powerful and continuous coldness that always exists in those mountains and places where it is found, for the waters and snows can never melt there because of the great cold. They have tried to prove this opinion of theirs by saying that crystal still retains the nature of frozen water, and that this is. shown not only in its appearance but also in the fact that, like ice, it floats without sinking to the bottom when it is put in water. They also say that it is customary to put it under the tongues of the thirsty on account of the, coldness and moistness which it gives, and that it quenches the dryness of their thirst. But even if all these things were true, as they are not, they do not upon consideration bring us to the conclusion that it is water, because the diamond and the beryl would do the same. Therefore it does not seem to me credible [391 that it is as they claim, for it is a stone generated as such by Nature. A two-step approach has been developed for surface mine short term planning by the authors. The first step is mid term control and planning by the use of Goal Programming. This step gives optimal results for mid term planning (i. e. yearly or quarterly mine plan) as well as a macro control for short term planning (i. e. monthly or weekly plan.) The second step of the approach deals with short term production scheduling by the application of CAD technique and Systems Simulation. An interactive color character graphic design system has been developed with a software package. The menu-driven and module- structured package provides sufficient functions for surface mine short term planning and makes the model very flexible and user-friendly. This model has been applied to a large surface coal mine for short term planning optimization. Satisfactory results have been obtained. It is concluded that for complicated mining conditions this two-step combined approach gives an optimal control of mid term planning, makes the short term planning easier to avoid blindness; it has been proven that the Goal Programming is a powerful tool for solving multi-objective decision-making problems; guided by GP mid term planning, the CAD technique and simulation software package for short term planning are able to be concentrated on their practicality and flexibility.

The use of econometric models to assess the effects of a Government's policy on an industry is gaining momentum. This is particularly so for the Mineral Industry and it is important that mineral industry management understands the techniques involved in developing econometric models. Models are usually constructed outside the industry by either government departments or their consultants and used by the policy makers to investigate artificially the implementation and ramifications of new policies. This paper discusses the application of econometric models in Governmental policy determination, highlights the use of various models in Australia and gives an overview of the techniques involved using Australian examples.

"In the present paper, the optimization of a tilt poured permanent mold will be carried out using filling and solidification modeling. This exercise resulted in 3 modifications of the initial mold design which was based on the foundry experience. The optimization provided a 20% improvement in the yield while increasing the output from 10 to 15 castings per hour.In a subsequent study, the value of the critical fraction solid of AlSi7Mg (A356) alloy was verified by radiographic analysis of the castings produced in the first 5 cycles of a run, which are necessary to bring the mold to a dynamic thermal equilibrium."

WHEN reviewing the progress made in mining geology for the year 1953, one might say that not much has been accomplished and, indeed, in a subject such as economic geology not much progress should be expected in the 10 months of the year which elapsed before this article was prepared. This seeming lack of progress, however, disappears when the facts are investigated a bit. There undoubtedly are more economic geologists at work than ever before. It is probably not an exaggeration to say that more geologists are now employed by a single company in the Lake Superior district than were employed in the whole district 20 years ago. In most mining districts geologists are busy with numerous problems of production, development, and exploration and some give an occasional thought to the scientific problems of the science, or rather the art, of mining geology. In fact, this very intense activity of mining geologists is one reason why progress seems slow; they do not have time to write up results of investigations. There is also a great amount of work being done which is not released because of company policy. Conditions have improved very much in recent years but mining corporations, in general, have some distance to go before attaining par with the petroleum industry in this respect.

THE general public does not know that there is such a thing as metallurgy and it is very seldom that you see the word metallurgy in print except in technical magazines. Perhaps it is more to the front now than in former years; the Dee. 30, 1929, issue of Time mentioned under the heading of "Science7' certain new achievements in metallurgy, which may be cited as a rare instance of the use of the word in anything but the technical press. Too often the part the metallurgist plays in the advancement of the different branches of engineering is overlooked. To say that the public does not know there is such a profession as metallurgical engineering seems to be a bold statement, but had there beep time a questionnaire could have proved this beyond doubt. Suppose a carefully-planned questionnaire had been sent to all high school students asking them, among other questions, to list the different branches of engineering, I believe that the several professions would have been listed in this manner: (1) Electrical engineering; (2) mechanical; (3) civil, and (4)' mining. One in each hundred might have listed metallurgy as an engineering profession. Even the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education in its Bulletin No. 10-"Investigation of Engineering Education" lists Civil, Mining, Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical, leaving out Metallurgical Engineering.

The iron ore deposits in India are rich in iron content but usually contains high alumina and silica. The current industrial practice results three products namely lump, fines and slimes. The lump and fines with or without beneficiation are directly fed to the blast furnace and sintering plant respectively while the super fines or slimes are presently discarded as tailings. Around eight million tonnes of iron ore slimes estimated as being 15 - 20 per cent by weight of run of mine ore containing ~48 - 62 per cent Fe, is discarded every year causing huge loss to the Indian iron ore industry. In addition, these slimes stored in massive tailing ponds pose enormous environmental and ecological problems. Extensive investigations have been carried out on three iron ore slimes generated at Barsua, Bolani and Meghahatuburu iron ore mines of India. The studies include physical, chemical, mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies adopting conventional hydroclyclone and wet high intensity magnetic separator. The characterisation studies have indicated that most of the gangue minerals are accumulated in finer fractions. The studies on hydrocyclone and magnetic separation had indicated that an iron concentrate of 61 - 65 per cent Fe could be obtained by recovering 59 - 78 per cent of the iron values present in the slimes. Depending on the nature of the slimes the alumina and silica levels have been brought down to 2.5 and 1.0 per cent respectively. The effects of different operating and design variables along with detailed characterisation studies have been highlighted.

THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATIJIEES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as 1/8 in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100- mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists-of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 2 ½ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the frothor concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors- used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. This paper presents a method whereby the amount of misplaced material and the difficulty of the separation can be used to compare coal cleaning equipment of all types, from effectiveness and capacity standpoints. The correlations presented do not include all types of equipment currently available, but the method can be used to evaluate any make or type of coal cleaning equipment, both old and new. THE relative performance of coal washing equipment, or the effectiveness with which any type or make of equipment removes impurities from coal, has been most difficult to evaluate in the past. The most widely used yardstick is the Frazer and Yancey efficiency formula developed in 1922,' but Yancey in a later article states that "washers treating coals of different density composition or operating at different densities of separation cannot be compared directly on the basis of this criterion."' Prior to and since 1922, a variety of other methods has been used for comparison purposes, including the distribution curve, the error area, and the "ecart probable" or probable error. Yancey and Geer in discussing these methods conclude, "Performance can be evaluated in a number of different ways, with the choice of the proper method to use being dictated by the objectives of the investigation and the data available."' It is true that performance can be evaluated in a variety of ways, but if the equipment is to be evaluated on an effectiveness basis, there should be only one universal comparison method. Varying methods have been used because one universal comparison method has not been found or developed. In the article previously quoted, Yancey and Geer state in clear terms the primary concept for a universal comparison method: "One of the simplest, and certainly one of the most obvious evaluations of washery performance is the quantity of sink material in the washed coal and the float material in the refuse. If the washery products are tested at the density at which the washing unit is operated, the sink in the washed coal and the float in the refuse represent material that has been misplaced." The quantity of misplaced material was used as a criterion of washery performance by Lincoln in 1913," by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1938,' by Hancock in 1947," and by the national French research agency Cerchar in recent years.' In 1950 Andersone proposed the use of this criterion as an efficiency value to replace the Frazer and Yancey formula. However, none of the above-mentioned investigators used the misplaced material concept in a manner that would provide universal coal-cleaning equipment comparisons. The Correlation Theory The ideal coal cleaning process would treat all sizes and would make a perfect separation at any given specific gravity. All material lower in density than the desired value would report in the coal product and all material higher in density would report in the refuse product. Unfortunately, no known cleaning process achieves this goal and there seems little likelihood that any process yet to be invented will do more than approach it. When coal is treated in volume under operating conditions, it is impossible to avoid mechanical entrapment, fluctuations in throughput and effective gravity of separation, and the creation of turbulent currents, even when a true heavy-liquid bath is used and the feed is closely sized and contains little intermediate gravity material. This being so, it is possible to appreciate the difficulties inherent in trying to obtain a perfect separation when treating a wide range of sizes and a feed containing high percentages of intermediate material, using turbulent currents to help create the effective separation gravity, under operating conditions which normally tend to be on the overload side. When coal is separated from refuse in any coal cleaning equipment, some refuse always reports to the coal and some coal to the refuse; the writer therefore assumed that there should be a relationship between the total amount of misplaced material produced by any given piece of equipment and the difficulty of separation as represented by the percentage of near gravity material in the feed. The most widely used yardstick is the Frazer and Yancey efficiency formula developed in 1922,' but Yancey in a later article states that "washers treating coals of different density composition or operating at different densities of separation cannot be compared directly on the basis of this criterion."' Prior to and since 1922, a variety of other methods has been used for comparison purposes, including the distribution curve, the error area, and the "ecart probable" or probable error. Yancey and Geer in discussing these methods conclude, "Performance can be evaluated in a number of different ways, with the choice of the proper method to use being dictated by the objectives of the investigation and the data available."' It is true that performance can be evaluated in a variety of ways, but if the equipment is to be evaluated on an effectiveness basis, there should be only one universal comparison method. Varying methods have been used because one universal comparison method has not been found or developed. In the article previously quoted, Yancey and Geer state in clear terms the primary concept for a universal comparison method: "One of the simplest, and certainly one of the most obvious evaluations of washery performance is the quantity of sink material in the washed coal and the float material in the refuse. If the washery products are tested at the density at which the washing unit is operated, the sink in the washed coal and the float in the refuse represent material that has been misplaced." The quantity of misplaced material was used as a criterion of washery performance by Lincoln in 1913," by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1938,' by Hancock in 1947," and by the national French research agency Cerchar in recent years.' In 1950 Andersone proposed the use of this criterion as an efficiency value to replace the Frazer and Yancey formula. However, none of the above-mentioned investigators used the misplaced material concept in a manner that would provide universal coal-cleaning equipment comparisons. The Correlation Theory The ideal coal cleaning process would treat all sizes and would make a perfect separation at any given specific gravity. All material lower in density than the desired value would report in the coal product and all material higher in density would report in the refuse product. Unfortunately, no known cleaning process achieves this goal and there seems little likelihood that any process yet to be invented will do more than approach it. When coal is treated in volume under operating conditions, it is impossible to avoid mechanical entrapment, fluctuations in throughput and effective gravity of separation, and the creation of turbulent currents, even when a true heavy-liquid bath is used and the feed is closely sized and contains little intermediate gravity material. This being so, it is possible to appreciate the difficulties inherent in trying to obtain a perfect separation when treating a wide range of sizes and a feed containing high percentages of intermediate material, using turbulent currents to help create the effective separation gravity, under operating conditions which normally tend to be on the overload side. When coal is separated from refuse in any coal cleaning equipment, some refuse always reports to the coal and some coal to the refuse; the writer therefore assumed that there should be a relationship between the total amount of misplaced material produced by any given piece of equipment and the difficulty of separation as represented by the percentage of near gravity material in the feed. In presenting this paper for discussion at the Western Annual Meeting to be held in Edmonton, it is with the idea of creating a full and general discussion by the mining men in the Province as to the best way to eliminate, or at least hold down to a minimum, the dangerous coal-dust which is made in mining pitching seams in our Alberta mines by the chute method. Also, an alternative method is outlined, whereby the percentage of lump-coal mined can be increased, and the mining costs reduced-although the paper does not go into any detailed consideration of costs. The general trend of mining practice and lay-outs is at present towards mechanization, and the results being accomplished by the substitution of machines for manual labour are fully justifying the changes. In the technical mining journals, there are published from time to time papers dealing with a variety of methods of mining, which are descriptions of actual operations, and a great deal of interesting and valuable data is given as to the comparative values of the different methods, insofar as the percentage of grades of coal produced, the cost of production, etc., are concerned; but the mechanical methods described in these papers are nearly always suitable only for flat seams, or seams with a very low inclination.

In German underground coal mining mostly arch and some rectangular roadways are used in the development work. Due to its positive results from numerical and physical modeling techniques as well as good underground experiences, the numbers of rectangular roadways has increased significantly. Today the bolt support - independent of its cross-sectional shape - represents an undeniable support element. During the introduction of new bolt techniques a detailed investigation of the rock and support mechanical effectiveness of bolt support in roadways at all operation stages is of basic importance. This effectiveness can be predicted and verified using different simulation techniques. For the planning of rockbolted roadways two supplementary simulation techniques are presented in this paper. By combination of all available planning tools the best result for planning assurance can be achieved.
