É comum o uso de modelos matemáticos no intuito de prever a qualidade do coque, sendo a maioria dos modelos atualmente disponíveis baseada nas propriedades dos carvões. Para este trabalho foram feitas misturas binárias e ternárias de carvões com variados teores de matéria volátil, a fim de se produzir coque em escala laboratorial. A reatividade ao CO2 em termobalança e resistência mecânica em tambores foi avaliada. Dois modelos para previsão de indicadores de qualidade do coque foram avaliados, o modelo aditivo e o modelo de interação. A partir da metodologia desenvolvida em laboratório foi possível produzir, avaliar e comparar coques feitos a partir de diferentes carvões e misturas. O modelo aditivo mostrou uma boa capacidade de prever a reatividade dos coques. No entanto, para os índices derivados dos testes de tambores os valores calculados mostram uma diferença importante em relação aos experimentais, indicando interação dos carvões no processo de carbonização. Nos resultados do modelo de interações, os valores calculados para reatividade e resistência mecânica, se comparados com os resultados do modelo aditivo, mostraram uma melhora na capacidade de previsão da qualidade do coque. O modelo de interações se apresenta como uma ferramenta interessante na seleção e mistura de carvões.

The fact that granite has been encountered by the drill by those in search of oil and gas in Kansas is becoming more and more a matter of interest, not only to the oil producer but to everyone directly and indirectly connected with the oil business. It is, therefore, time that someone should offer an explanation for its presence and form a definite opinion, based on all the data available, in regard to the effect it will have on the future prospects of the area affected as probable oil-and gas-producing territory. At present there seems to be no consensus of opinion. To the writer's knowledge, only one attempt has been made to explain ; by Erasmus Haworth, State Geologist of Kansas, in a paper entitled Bulletin Number Two on Crystalline Rocks in Kansas. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a theory for the presence of the granite, and to draw conclusions which will aid in determining the prospective oil and gas value of the area in question. In taking up this question it will be well to consider first the tests in which granite has been reported, with a general history of each. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the location of all wells described. The first well in which granite was reported was that drilled just south of Zeandale in section 27, township 10 south, range 9 east, by a local company which had taken up a block of leases in that vicinity. At a depth of 958 ft. (291.99 m.) granite was encountered. Drilling was continued to a depth of 1093 ft. (333 m.) in the same formation, at which depth the hole was abandoned. Another well was started 1 mile east of the first well and the same rock was found at a depth of 945 ft. (288 m.). Drilling was continued to a depth of 1200 ft. (365.76 m.) with the bit in the same formation. Samples of the drill cuttings have been examined and they are undoubtedly crushed granite. The next well in which granite was found was that drilled by DeLaat and Shepard, independent wildcat operators, in section 34, township 19 south, range 7 east, near the town of Elmdale. Granite was struck at 1707 ft. (520 m.) and the hole was abandoned in the same formation at 2525 ft. (769 m.). "INTRODUCTION Iron ore beneficiation needs advances in areas such as process control, automation, burner and furnace designs, silica-free binders, and even alternative iron making routes. While some – like new binders – are only step-changes, all are tools that can help make the ironmaking industry more sustainable. This paper focuses on binders. Binders are added to iron ore fines before they are agglomerated. Binders are used to control the balling process and increase the mechanical quality (e.g. strength) of green-balls and pellets. Agglomeration usually follows thickening and filtration. Good-grade ores, which don't require upgrading, are wet ground to decrease particle size and increase specific surface area. Low-grade ores are often extensively upgraded through wet operations (flotation, dispersion and selective flocculation, magnetic separation, etc.). For both types of ores, thickening and filtration conclude the circuits so that moisture contents are lowered and the ores can be agglomerated. It's been known for a long time that thickening and filtration behaviors are influenced by zeta potential (Sandvik, 1979). Highly-negative zeta potential is good for dispersion while low zeta potential is good for filtration. So, the zeta potentials of iron ore particles are lowered with additions of acid or carbon dioxide, for example, to increase filtration rates and throughputs (Eisele et al., 2005). What happens to particles as their zeta potentials are lowered? Particles aggregate together, effectively forming larger particles. How stable then, are those aggregates during mixing and balling? Are they easily broken up during mixing (if mixers are even used)? Are they broken up during balling? Or, do the aggregates resist breakage so that the availability of ultra-fines, which are so beneficial for agglomeration (Stone, 1968), is decreased? For plants where high doses of bentonite are used as binder, the above questions may be of no concern. The bentonite adds the necessary amount of fines; however, even at those plants, the calcium and magnesium contents in the water affect bentonite's effectiveness (more magnesium and calcium means less effective bentonite). (Engesser, 2003) For plants where new silica-free organic binders are being developed and used, the above questions may need to be considered. The binder is only amongst the iron ore particles for a short period of time – until it burns away or thermally decomposes in the induration furnace – so the liberation, availability and distribution of fine particulates is very critical for the quality of balls and pellets. It was hypothesized that high zeta potential conditions would lead to good pellets, while low zeta potential conditions would lead to relatively bad pellets."

THE purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical pros-pecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field.

Historically two basic approaches of production sequencing have been formed in the theory of open pit mine design. The first approach implements a technological discretization of the pit space within the ultimate pit outlines where the minimum working width is the limiting technological factor. The second approach uses a pseudo-economic discretization based on the implementation of analytical methods for designing intermediate/ultimate pit outlines and the concept of pit shells generation. The paper offers an elaborate analysis of both approaches used currently for discretization of the geological medium into working benches and modelling the working zone of open pit mine. The analysis is extended with a new vision for unification of the mining systems in open pit mine design under the form of a classification. A comparison of the approaches is provided to illustrate their advantages and disadvantages with regard to the implementation of the principle of waste deferment as one of the main principles of mine planning that exploits the time effect of money.

"ANSTO Minerals and Northern Minerals have been working together since 2012 on the process flowsheet development for the Browns Range project for the recovery of the heavy rare earths (Dy – Lu, + Y). Initial efforts were directed toward defining the most efficient and direct flowsheet for the Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS), issued in June 2014, then towards the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS), issued in February 2015. These goals were achieved by undertaking comprehensive laboratory and continuous piloting programs. Further improvements to the flowsheet following the DFS have been made. This publication provides an overview of the evolution of the process flowsheet based on these laboratory and piloting programs from the PFS through the DFS and beyond.INTRODUCTIONNorthern Minerals Ltd (Northern) has been working on developing their flagship project at Browns Range for the recovery of the heavy rare earth elements (HRE, Dy – Lu, + Y). The project is located in the north of Western Australia as shown in Figure 1. The Total Mineral Resource at the project is currently estimated at 8.98 Mt @ 0.63% total rare earth oxides (TREO) comprising 56,663 t of contained TREO using a cut-off grade of 0.15% TREO. Of the Total Mineral Resource, 58% is classified as Indicated Resource, with the remainder in the Inferred Resource category.The deposit is characterised by breccia-hosted, hydrothermal, HRE-rich, xenotime mineralisation. The main gangue mineral associated with the xenotime is quartz. The distribution of rare earths (RE) observed for the xenotime mineralisation at Browns Range is presented in Figure 2. Extensive test work has shown that the xenotime can be readily beneficiated to between 20 – 40% rare earth oxide (REO) using a process consisting of crushing and grinding, followed by magnetic separation and flotation steps. Continuous piloting of this process was conducted on ~80 t of trench-sourced ore in late 2013 at SGS Perth, to produce ~2 t of ~20% REO mineral concentrate (MC) for hydrometallurgical testing. The composition of the MC produced during piloting is presented in Table 1."

The theoretical relations between the strain and stress Mohr circles make it possible to establish a relation between the internal friction angle [ ] and the Poisson's ratio (v) of rocks. The internal friction angle is related to the Poisson's ratio as Sin [-] = (1 - v)/(l + v). This relation gives lower friction angle values than the triaxial Mohr envelopes and higher values than those given by surface sliding friction tests.

Le minerai est constitué habituellement de 20% de fine pyrite disséminée. The measures overlying some coal beds are under stress as the result of geological movements after the measures have been deposited. The removal of the coal in the process of mining induces additional stress in the roof measures. Certain types of deposits have sufficient inherent strength to be self-supporting over definite width of excavations and the stress is adjusted without appreciable movement of the material, to the extent that no part of the material will become detached and fall. The uplifting of the measures in geological time often results in the establishing of cleat planes or planes of weakness in the measures overlying the coal, and these planes generally have a uniform direction. Measures that have not been subject to uplifts are less liable to have noncompensable stresses, although any method of underground mining results in the creation of stress in the roof measures over the excavations and over the coal pillars. The immediate roof measures extending upwards of 10 to 15 ft. above the coal give the greatest concern in maintaining the roof in the advance work in the solid coal. Immediate measures which are inherently weak often may be scaled and supported for indefinite periods by a system of timbering. As an excavation is made, the pillars adjoining must take on the weight previously supported by the coal removed. The roof over the excavations takes on the function of a beam and if too weak to be self-supporting it will fail either through shearing or bending, and the roof cavity may enlarge until a self-supporting arch is formed. As support is removed by taking the coal away, there is a tendency for the roof members to move toward the excavation in an effort to compensate the stress; particularly is this true where there is an overlying bed of clay, which may act as a lubricant on which adjoining members may slide. Unstabilized stresses, plus the force of gravity, plus the inherent strength of the material, govern the tendency of mine roof to fall when not supported by timber. In general, most mine roof depresses when the coal is removed. This depression may be in the nature of a sag as the result of bending, or the edges of the pillar may break away or the floor may come up or heave.

Coal has the advantages over oil of greater safety of handling and smaller losses in storage. But oil is, in the present stage of technical advancement, the more economical source of liquid fuel for internal-combustion motors. No method for direct use of coal in such motors has been developed that can compete with petroleum products. The automoblle engine and the airplane motor are designed to make the most effective use of gasoline.

Detailed reference to- the many published investigations in connection with the properties of steel at various temperatures will be omitted from this report. Suffice to state that results obtained for variation in tensile strength, elongation, and reduction in area with temperature are in substantial agreement with the effects now generally considered to be correct. Comparison of proportional limit values with results obtained by other investigators will be found in the conclusions. Materials Used The steels tested were $1/2-in. Foster-Miller has recently developed a new concept.for a highly specialized shaft lining system. This innovative shaft lining system uses a continuous slipforming placement technique. lining the shaft from the bottom up such as in a raised bored shaft. Although this part is not unique, the concept is designed to use polyurethane foam instead of concrete for the liner material. Furthermore, the concept is designed to attain rates of advance of 30 m/hr. The polyurethane foam liner is designed to be thinner (100 mm) than a conventional concrete liner (300 mm). It will eliminate the high cost associated with the erection and operation of an on-site concrete batch plant. The system will be designed to be operated remotely, requiring few personnel for its operation. This system (or parts of it) may be appropriate where fast construction speed is required or where a jointless liner is needed.

Crystals with an (001) [loo] initial orientation of an iron-base alloy containing 3 pct Si were cold rolled with and without the use of constraints. A major difference in the rolling and annealing textures was observed between crystals rolled with and without constraints. These data show that the contribution of constraints at grain boundaries in a poly crystalline sheet should be considered in applying textural data on single crystals to grains in an aggregate. SILICON-iron alloys with a cube texture have been recently developed and their magnetic characteristics reported.1-4 Of interest in the development of this texture were the textural changes of single crystals accompanying rolling and annealing and the influence of constraints at grain boundaries in an aggregate on the behavior of individual grains. The present study was primarily concerned with the effect of constraints during rolling on the textures of 3 pct Si-Fe crystals initially (001)[100]. Barrett and Levenson5 were among the first to observe an influence of constraints at grain boundaries on the textural changes of individual grains during deformation. They tested Taylor's6 theory of plastic deformation of face-centered-cubic metals in which deformation textures were predicted. About one-third of the grains in poly crystalline aluminum did not rotate as predicted. Grains of the same initial orientation were observed to rotate in different directions under the influence of applied stress and anisotropic flow of neighboring grains. Recently, the various inhomogeneities of flow of crystals in an aggregate have been studied7'8 and reviewed.9-11 Barrett and Levenson" rolled (001) [loo] iron single crystals inserted in close-fitting holes in copper to limit lateral flow and to simulate rolling of grains in an aggregate. Deformation bands were formed after a 90 pct reduction in thickness, and the cold-rolling texture contained two components described by rotating the (001)[100] about 35 deg in both directions around the normal of the rolling plane. No annealing textures were reported. Chen and Maddin13 rolled molybdenum single crystals initially (001) [loo]. The crystals were mounted between two hardened silicon-iron plates and 96 pct reduced in thickness by rolling at a low rate of reduction, about 0.0001 in. per pass. The deformation texture had the mean orientation of (001) [loo], and the azimuthal spread included orientations described by rotating (001) [loo] about 35 deg in both directions about the pole of the rolling plane. The presence of deformation bands were not reported by Chen and Maddin or detected in subsequent work of Ujiiye and Maddin.14 The ideal orientation of the annealing texture was (001) [loo]. Recently, Walter and Hibbard 15 reported on the textures of 3 pct Si-Fe alloy crystals initially near (001) [loo]. Each crystal was in an aggregate cut from a columnar ingot. After 66 pct reduction by rolling, the texture consisted of two symmetrical components which had the orientations described by rotating (001) [loo] about 30 deg in both directions about the pole of the rolling plane. Annealing texture was near (001) [loo]. In the above work, the textures of body-centered-cubic crystals were studied after rolling under the influence of constraints. The deformation textures varied from (001) [loo] to near the (001) [110] type and appeared sensitive to the manner in which the crystals were rolled. No textural data were available on the effect of rolling (001) [loo] crystals with and without constraints. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the influence of constraints during rolling on the textures of 3 pct Si-Fe crystals initially (001) [loo]. Rolling and annealing textures were studied for a) crystals rolled with no constraints at different rates of reduction, and b) crystals rolled with constraints imposed by neighboring grains and by plates between which a crystal was "sandwiched". PROCEDURES AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Data are presented on four crystals which are representative of several crystals studied. The orientation of each crystal prior to rolling was (001) [loo] as determined by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method," i.e., each crystal had an (001) within 3 deg of the rolling plane and [100] within 3 deg of the rolling direction. These crystals were obtained from two iron-base alloys containing 3 pct Si by weight which were prepared by vacuum melting electrolytic iron and a commercial grade of silicon. He appreciates, moreover, the responsibilities of membership and his duty to the cause, and how much is to be gained by himself from the keen but friendly criticism of his fellow-workers and even by the suggestions that may come of shrewd question or chance remark from those who labor in other but related fields.

Os pós fluxantes são formados por escórias sintéticas que em contato com o aço líquido deve fundir e gerar uma escória líquida. Suas principais funções são: lubrificar e controlar a transferência de calor entre a casca sólida do metal e o molde. Eles possuem composições diferentes para diferentes condições de lingotamento, sendo formados, basicamente, por CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, CaF2 e podem conter MgO, Li2O, K2O e B2O3. Como alguns componentes influenciam diretamente na cristalinidade dos fluxantes, como o CaO, o MgO, o CaF2, neste trabalho serão analisadas quatro misturas de pós fluxantes com leves variações na composição de modo que possa gerar cristalinidades diferentes. Para esta análise será utilizada o método de lâminas delgadas, com auxílio de um microscópio óptico de luz transmitida, que tem apresentado resultados bem satisfatório sobre o detalhamento da cristalinidade dos materiais.

After a number of years of engineering and operating assignments and through many types of evaluations, the need for a simple analytical method of evaluating mine haulage alternatives became obvious. Haulage, like 50 many other facets of mining, is generally a sequence of interconnected events that change, often drastically from mine to mine. Often the operator or the mine engineer has neither the time, manpower, facilities, or information needed to prepare a detailed evaluation. For many studies or for routine variance analysis, that detail may not be necessary. The intent of this article is to present an approach for analyzing mobile mine haulage that is simple and straight-forward. These methods are not designed to replace more formal and detailed procedures that have been developed previously and are available in our technical libraries. They are offered as a tool to be applied to preliminary designs, feasibility studies, and variance analyses where more complete detail is not warranted. These methods will eliminate combinations that are not economical or appropriate before more intensive and complete evaluations are undertaken. These methods may also be used to evaluate ongoing operations and to plan changes in those operations. This presentation describes a series of steps that have evolved for the handling of haulage evaluations. It concentrates on the factors having major impact on the results. Because the approach is a sequence of distinct steps, a case study was chosen as the best method of presentation. This case is a composite of several actual situations that have been encountered within the last few years.

El control de leyes es una de las operaciones mineras más importantes puesto que genera especificaciones exigentes para los productos finales, así como minimiza la contaminación, manteniendo los límites de ciertos parámetros de calidad. Sin embago, existe un problema con el método de programación lineal durante el planeamiento de mina. En ese sentido, el presente texto destaca dichos problemas - en tanto existe un manejo estricto de los precedentes en la operación minera y hay una falta de flexibilidad y fácil manejo. Por ello, se han desarrollado sistemas que superen las deficiencias generadas por las firmas proveedoras de equipos como CATERPILLAR, GEMCOM, DATAMINE y VULCAN, combinando las ventajas de un software gráfico con la estrategia de perfeccionamiento de la Programación Lineal.
