The bessemer process is nearly one hundred years old. William Kelly, the American inventor, was able to demonstrate that he had accomplished the pneumatic purification of molten pig iron as early as 1847; Henry Bessemer's English patent was granted in 1855. The application of this steelmaking process since then and the present position of bessemer steel are concisely discussed on pages 355 and 356 of the fifth edition of "The Making, Shaping and Treating of Steel." The great expansion of the automotive, machine-tool, chemical and oil industries after I9I0 opened up a large market for special steels, whereas the output of steel before that time was mainly for structural purposes. The need for building more blastfurnace capacity complementary to bessemer operations, combined with the availability of the' necessary amounts of steel scrap, both contributed to the extension of open-hearth plants at the -exense of besskmer capacity. The ability of the open-hearth furnaces to consume virtually all types of raw materials as far as phosphorus content is concerned, and the need for selecting low-phosphorus ores of rapidly decreasing sources for the bessemer, also played a part in the reduction of bessemer steelmaking operations and the increase in basic open-hearth plants. As a consequence, the proportion of bessemer steel made, in this country decreased from 65.7 per cent of the total in 1900 to 37.1 per cent in 1910, and only 6.8 per cent of the total in 1937. The metallurgical concepts existent between 1910 and 1920 caused the writing of many specifications of very low phosphorus and sulphur content, which definitely barred bessemer steel from many commodities. Now sulphur is being added to many open-hearth and bessemer steels in amounts far exceeding the maximum sulphur content of good bessemer steel. Re-phosphorizing is also widely practiced for several specific applications. Even today, the chemical-analysis limits of many important steel specifications have an arbitrary and archaic tinge. The old standard "0.30 to 0.60 per cent manganese" might be mentioned in this connection as similar to the rigid requirements for maximum sulphur and phosphorus that were established at least 25 years ago. The literature is full of vague and complee discussions of the effects of nitrogen and oxygen where these elements existed in steel in amounts less than 0.02 per cent. Many failures have been attributed to these elements without reasonable proof on which to base the conclusion. Methods of determining oxygen in steel require such complicated equipment that only a few research laboratories have the required apparatus. Even so, the accuracy of oxygen determinations in steel has been only recently reproducible. The Eufaula bauxite-kaolin district in southeastern Alabama is an important source of raw material for the refractory industries in the United States. At the present time, five companies are mining and processing bauxite and kaolin from this district and a sixth company is holding substantial reserves. Mining operations are expanding, but finding new ore reserves is a major problem. The Geological Survey of Alabama sponsored geologic research in the Eufaula district to: 1) investigate the utilization of sandy kaolinS and other clays associated with bauxite-kaolin deposits; 2) find limits of the bauxite district, looking for possible extensions; and 3) study the geology of the district, looking for patterns or trends that may aid in finding new ore reserves. This work was done with the full cooperation of mining companies operating in the district and property owners. Research was aided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama. The investigation included detailed geologic mapping of mines, drilling in selected areas, and making mineral analyses of bauxite and clays. The mapping was performed primarily by pace and compass because of the complexity of the deposits studied, but aerial photographs were used to a limited extent. Drilling included both auger and core drilling. The auger drilling was limited to 100 feet, but core holes were drilled as deep as 200 feet. The term 'bauxite,' as used here, indicates a mixture of minerals containing more than 50 percent gibbsite. Bauxitic clay is a mixture of gibbsite and kaolinite that contains more kaolinite than gibbsite. The term "kaolin" indicates a clay composed of predominantly kaolinite. Other clays in the Eufaula district are composed of kaolinite, illite, quartz, mica, and goethite or hematite.

"A procedure that is being studied as a potential method for correct disposal of industrial wastes by incorporation on common clay bodies in the fabrication of structural ceramic products as bricks, blocks and roof tiles. The objective of this paper is to present the results obtained with mixtures of unburned sanitary ware wastes with a common clay from Jundiai, São Paulo, Brazil. Preliminary tests of incorporation (1,0% to 30,0% in weight) were made with hand formed spherical test bodies. With the proportion that presented spheres with the higher compression strength after drying and after firing (950°C) prismatic samples were extruded. Based on the ceramic properties of those mixtures an industrial test was performed. Six hundred hallow blocks containing 30% waste were fabricated and presented ceramic properties similar to those without incorporation. Introduction The sanitary ware segment has a very great prominence in South America, placing Brazil as one of the greater producers of the world.. Inside the country, the city of Jundiai, in the State of São Paulo is the greater producer region of this ware. Great part of the material is destined to exportation and daily it is produced high number parts. High exportation requirements make that the amount of powder waste rejects reach astronomical volumes. Until the moment too small part of that material it is re-taken with advantage, because in the own segment, there is not an economic viability, by the fact of the exigencies concerning the quality of the final product [1]. If from one side it exists that material that at the moment is deposited in landfills, or stored at the patio’s factories, from the other side the exigency of adopting exploitation rules, recycling and obedience to Laws relative to the environment as ABNT 10400, therefore it is a material that if well studied, it will certainty have a noble destiny [1]."

This paper describes the project implementation from financing, through the engineering and construction phases, mine and process plant commissioning as well as operating experience realized to-date. The single line flowsheet used to process the lateritic nickel ore to a 75 percent nickel matte is presented with emphasis on the main pyrometallurgical operations. These include a rotary dryer, a unique reduction kiln, a 45 000 kVA electric furnace and two Pierce-Smith type converters. Associated infrastructure facilities and services necessary to sustain the 11 300 tonnes (12 500 short tons) per year nickel production rate are also described.

"The gold mines of Kirkland Lake are in Teck township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, latitude 48°9'N. and longitude 80°3'W., at an elevation of 1,038 feet above sea-level.There are seven contiguous producing mines in a length of 3;1/2 miles along the general east-west strike of the deposits. The seven mines are, in order from west to east, Macassa, Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Sylvanite, and Toburn.The first discovery of gold in the zone was made by W. H. Wright in 1911 on the east claim of the Wright-Hargreaves property, and the following year the Tough brothers and H. Oakes found gold in what is now the No. 1 vein_ at the Toburn. Production began at the Toburn in 1915, followed by Teck-Hughes in 1917, Lake Shore in 1918, Kirkland Lake Gold in 1919, Wright-Hargreaves in 1921, Sylvanite in 1927, and Macassa in 1933.To the end of 1946, 31,938,350 tons of ore had been milled at the Kirkland Lake mines, from which 16,132,700 oz. gold, having a value of $498,517,600, were recovered. The bullion varies from mine to mine between 800 and 900 fine, the average for all the mines being 853. Lateral migration of leach solution in heaps and dumps is attributed to two phenomena. One is site-specific anisotropic conditions that exist on a macroscopic scale on the surface or within the rock piles. The second is associated with a random walk phenomenon that causes dispersion of solution, especially at gradients in flow or hydrostatic pressure. The latter phenomenon is a general condition that will occur in any leaching operation. Its effects are modeled by computer analysis and are compared with available field data on heap leaching. Under appropriate assumptions, the observed 58° angle of solution dispersion can be reproduced by the model. The combined effects of both anisotropy and random walk are also discussed. Finally, the impact of lateral solution flow on actual leaching operations is considered.

The application of the cyanide process to complex sulphide ores for the extraction of the gold and silver is no longer a novelty; but, as an example showing modern teudencies in this direction, the following description of the new milling process at the Lucky-Tiger mine is offered: The extraordinary richuess of the ore in the upper workings of this mine made any thought of milling in its early days seem unnecessary. Its location in an almost inaccessible part of the rugged mountains just south of the Arizona boundary-line, and 60 miles from the town of Douglas, made the expense of bringing in machinery and sopplies a very serious consideration. But, after the property had been shipping high-grade ore on mule-back for a few years, there remained in the mine a considerable tonnage of vein-matter that mas too low in value to ship, but which it wag thought could be milled near the mine at a profit. The first milling-experiment consisted in the installation of Nissen stamps in conjunction with concentrating-tables and Frue vanners, but, as the ore from the upper workings contained most of its silver in the form of cerargyrite, this type of mill mas not successful. The proximity of the mine to the great copper-concentrating mills of Cananea and Moctezuma naturally made the influence of copper-milling ideas felt in the company's next instdlation. At considerable expense a stage-crushing concentrating-mill, with a capacity of 100 tons per day, was built. This mill was modeled along the lines of the most approved practice in copper-concentrators at that time, the main idea being that crushing by stages .in rolls was necessary in order to prevent losses from " sliming." During 1937 the Russian oil industry made very satisfactory progress in its exploration branch and added considerably to its proven reserves in the older producing districts, while several entirely new potential areas were opened for development by discovery wildcats. The exploitation of known fields, however, suffered greatly from internal political difficulties, referred to as "sabotage," and was also seriously handicapped by the requirements for national defense under the duress of a grave international situation. More particularly, the necessity for preparing for a major war resulted during 1937 in short-rationing of the oil industry in its iron, steel and rubber requirements, affecting quantitatively drill pipe, casing, tubing and the rubber equipment of automobiles, and qualitatively much of the oil-field machinery for which it was either impossible or difficult to obtain iron or steel of required specifications, which necessitated manufacture of heavier and unwieldy equipment and caused directly and indirectly an unavoidable major curtailment of drilling operations below the planned footage. War-preparation measures during 1937 also required accumulation of a large gasoline reserve in the Vladivostok area and inasmuch as shipments from California can be made much more cheaply than from Caucasian refineries, either by tank cars across Siberia or by tankers via Suez Canal and Indian Ocean, some 2,000,000 bbl. of gasoline was imported from the United States in the past year, resulting in a decline of 46.98 per cent in net exports of all petroleum products from Russia below the 1936 net export volume, which is the lowest level since 1925. Production of crude oil during 1937 is estimated at 212,742,000 bbl. as compared with 202,543,700 bbl. produced in 1936, an increase of 5.04 per cent, but 11 per cent below the planned output. There were no major readjustments as to the source of crude-oil production, Baku district still accounting for the largest share; that, is, 77.21 per cent of the total. Exploration operations were outstandingly successful during the past year, major discoveries having been made on the Apsheron Peninsula, in Grozny and Maikop-Kuban districts, in Ural-Permian Basin, in Middle Volga-Samara district and other areas.

In the flotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions not only ionic strength but also chemical composition, flotation pH and mineral properties play an important role. As a result an improvement or depression may be observed. A strong improvement in the floatability of hydrophobic bituminous coals and other inherently hydrophobic minerals is characteristic for the "salt flotation process", which is carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions at natural pH and without addition of any flotation reagents. However, pH is a key factor when saline and hipersaline waters with hydrolyzing metallic ions are used as process water. In the case of flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores in seawater, molybdenite is strongly depressed by the Mg2+ hydrolysis products when pH is raised to depress pyrite. Process water with a high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, and this also includes seawater, have deleterious effect on the anionic flotation of industrial minerals with fatty acids. The flotation of potash ores is carried out in NaCl-KCl saturated brine (6-7 mole/L of NaCl and KCl) with the use of long-chain amines. Such a high electrolyte concentration changes dramatically the amine Krafft point making the collector insoluble in brine; its mode of action entirely differs from that in conventional flotation processes.

Total extraction is a misnomer and invariably some coal losses occur in the mining of pillars. "Fulls" pillar extraction is by the pocket and fender method, the splitting method or the open end method, with extraction in the pillar, and in rows of pillars in planned sequence, using combinations of coal and timber and roof-bolts for support. Where circumstances dictate, partial extraction is used, leaving behind portions of pillars in large blocks for support. The use of such extraction plans and supports as minimum guidelines has contributed greatly to safety in United States Coal Mines.

Drill and blast excavation in underground mining and. civil engineering projects has grad- ually given ground to mechanical boring of tun- nels, shafts and raises during the past twenty years. The use of.boring equipment must today be considered significant and wide spread al- though comprising only a very small percent of total underground excavation. The encroachment of mechanical boring into the domain of blast- ing has been by slow incremental advances. There have been few, if any major breakthroughs in this development, and none can be foreseen in the next decade. After 1990 it is possible that scientific. development will provide some form of breakthrough in rock breaking, but this is so uncertain that it should have little relevance to planners in the 1980's. A more near term view of the future, con- centrating on the next five to ten years, has lead to the conclusion that significant im- provements will be seen in tunnel borers for poor ground conditions. A universal machine will be developed that converts from a dry hard rock machine to a closed slurry type machine for passing through fault zones with unstable crushed rock and water. Two other machines have been described as alternate designs for tunnelling in squeez- ing ground conditions.

"The flotation of fine minerals less than 10 µm in size is an age old challenge spanning both the precious metal and industrial mineral sectors across a range of commodities. This problem has been brought into sharper focus by the emergence of the practice of fine grinding of flotation feed to effect better liberation of the targeted minerals. However, the ability of conventional flotation cells to effectively float the liberated fines remains questionable. In order to overcome this problem, Gold Ore postulates the “Bringing the Mountain to Mohamed” hypothesis which comprises the steps of gas nucleation on particle surfaces, aggregation of particles and levitation of aggregates. Testing of this hypothesis at Mintek, South Africa, showed a ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor coupled with a projected recovery improvement of ~4 % for the Mach Reactor case coupled with a final concentrate grade of ~2 times that of conventional flotation. These fundamentals were then extrapolated to plant scale with Mach Reactors installed on the flotation feed at Platmin’s Tailings Scavenger Plant (TSP) with the objective of scavenging the fine minerals lost to tailings by the main plant. This paper details the theory, pilot plant results as well as key aspects of the full scale plant design supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning. This game changing application is regarded as being pivotal to future flotation plant design whilst providing the technology leverage required for the survival of mineral operations in an economically unfriendly environment.INTRODUCTION - THE CONUNDRUM OF FINE PARTICLE FLOTATION“If the mountain won't come to Mohamed then Mohamed must go to the mountain” is an age old saying written into the book of proverbs in 1670. Legend has it that Mohamed promised his people that he would summon a mountain to come over to him so that he could offer up his prayers from its summit. After numerous attempts at moving the mountain went in vain, Mohamed, quite unabashed, said “Well if the mountain will not come to Mohamed, then Mohamed will go to the Mountain.” In this analogy, Mohamed is a fine particle <10 µm and the mountain is a bubble within a flotation system. The age old challenge is how to bring these two together to achieve attachment?"

A system for measuring amplitude probability distributions (APD’s) of electromagnetic noise in coal mines is described and typical APD’s from an underground coal mine are presented. The APD is a basic statistic required for the design and analysis of communication systems, especially those intended for use in noisy environments, and where neither overdesign nor underdesign is acceptable. The rms and average field strengths are obtained by integration of the APD, and examples are shown at several frequencies. All field strength levels are given in absolute units. Selected frequencies cover the range from 10 kHz to 32 MHz.

The average grade of copper concentrate is steadily declining, forcing the industry to turn to lower grade and metallurgically challenging orebodies. When faced with a low grade, challenging ore, mining companies are often forced to choose between high recovery at low grade or low recovery at high grade. Hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates using metathesis reactions, which replace iron with copper in copper-iron sulphide minerals and increase the copper to sulphur ratio in copper sulphide minerals, provide an opportunity to upgrade copper concentrates and potentially allow high copper recovery for a high grade concentrate. Factors such as concentrate mineralogy, reaction time and temperature, and the concentrations of copper, chloride and acid in solution are reported to affect the reaction extent and mineral phases formed by metathesis. In this paper, a copper concentrate has been studied over a wide range of conditions to investigate the influence of these key parameters on the extent of copper metathesis reactions and product phases formed. Solution and solid phases are assayed with the main mineral phases identified by Quantitative X-Ray Diffraction. INTRODUCTION The minerals present in copper deposits determine the prospective processing options either: pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. For copper oxide ores, copper is typically present as oxides, carbonate, chlorides, silicates and sulphates. These minerals are readily solubilised in acid and are usually treated through hydrometallurgical processes. The typical process route for copper oxides is to leach copper into aqueous solution, purify and upgrade the solution phase through solvent extraction and then recover copper as metal by electrowinning (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002). Copper sulphide deposits may contain a multitude of copper bearing minerals, including chalcopyrite, bornite, enargite, covellite, digenite and chalcocite. The copper ore grade and treatment options are affected by the mineral type and distribution. Sulphide ores are typically treated through comminution and mineral flotation to form concentrates, followed by pyrometallurgical smelting. Hydrometallurgy can also be used to process sulphides depending on the mineralogy and impurity levels (Davenport et al., 2002). The trend of decreasing copper grade with increasing impurity levels are common across the mining industry and pose future challenges to copper processing. This trend has prompted research into hydrometallurgical options for upgrading copper concentrates. One promising hydrometallurgical option is using metathesis reactions. Metathesis reactions, sometimes also called double replacement or displacement reactions, are chemical processes involving the exchange of bonds between two chemical compounds or species. In this case, the metathesis reactions involve copper in solution exchanging with cations in the solid sulphide concentrate. The driving force for copper sulphide metathesis is the relative affinity of the exchanging cation elements for sulphide. Based on sulphide precipitation diagrams, the expected order of affinity for sulphide should be Hg2+ > Ag+ > Cu+ > Cu2+ > Bi3+ > Cd2+ > Pb2+ > Sn2+ > Zn2+ > Co2+ > Ni2+ > Fe2+ > Mn2+ (Monhemius, 1977). Hence, copper metathesis reactions are capable of increasing copper content and removing impurities such as iron, nickel, zinc and lead from copper concentrates.

Mineral resource estimation is commonly based on the accumulation of a series of local estimates. At times, the distribution of these grade estimates is not appropriate to the grade distribution of the data on which the estimates are based. Mineral resource grade estimation has an increased potential of being in error as the grade variability increases. As the mineral commodity value increases, greater grade variability within the mineral resource is tolerated. This paper directs its attention to mineral properties where the data average grade is 20 per cent or more than the data median grade at a specific cut-off grade. A mineral resource estimate is enhanced if it is supported by graphs which demonstrate that the sample data have been separated into appropriate geological domains. Each geological domain has a unique grade distribution signature, which can be graphically demonstrated simply and objectively. This signature will usually be evident well before the Indicated mineral resource estimates are available. The paper looks at the use of the log probability and MedAve plots to assess how effective domaining has been. It further outlines how the MedAve plot can be used to assess the integrity of the mineral resource grade estimate within a geological domain with the data on which it is based. The paper suggests that the overall grade of a mineral resource at any cut-off grade will be closer to the data median grade rather than the data average grade. Tips are provided to ensure that the odds reflected in the data grade distribution are not ignored and hence the risk that the project is affected by unrealistic estimates of the overall mineral resource grade is reduced.

INTRODUCTION In response to the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (Public Law 95-604, Section 114c), a report has been prepared by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1980) which describes the potential health and environmental effects associated with uranium mine wastes. The author was responsible for the geology, hydrology and aqueous pathways analysis portions of the report. All potential sources of contaminants, solids, liquids, and airborne emissions, which might cause adverse impacts upon the environment or health of nearby populations were considered. Wastes at both active and inactive uranium mines (Hans and O&apos;Connell, 1981) are described and assessed with respect to dose and health effects (Blanchard et al. 1981). The emphasis of this paper is on the liquid emissions and the aqueous pathway. Model uranium mines were developed for surface and underground mines. The model underground mine was placed in New Mexico while the model surface mine was in Wyoming. Development of a generic assessment was complicated due to the inherent variability of uranium mines. Also, most information available relates to uranium mills rather than to mines, or reported measurements were often influenced (biased) by wastes from a nearby mill and did not specifically reflect mine discharges. Consequently, the assessment presented is often based on conservatve (maximizing) assumptions which are identified as such, and which were based on knowledge from field investigations, available literature, and consultations inside and outside the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Maximum use was made of available data, supplemented with limited field studies in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Stream survey work in Colorado by the Water Pollution Control Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey (Moran, 1974; Wentz, 1974) mentioned a portion of the Uravan Mineral Belt and uranium mines therein, but the work did not emphasize uranium mines. Significant amounts of acidity and total trace metal concentrations were found in streams from 18 different mining areas. Dilution and chemical precipitation below mine drainages decreased concentration and increased the pH. Given enough time and distance, the streams recover naturally, but the accumulations of trace metals in the sediments increase. Field observations in 1971-72 of streams in most of Colorado indicated that approximately 724 km of streams in 25 different mining areas were adversely affected by mine drainage (Wentz, 1974). Discussions of the impacts of uranium mining on water quality or quantity are incidental in numerous impact statements and environmental reports prepared by industry and (or) the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission as an integral part of licensing or relicensing uranium mills. Coverage on mining is usually minor as the principal focus is on milling impacts. The same is true for the recently prepared generic EIS on regulation of uranium milling (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 1979). Radiochemical assessment of surface and groundwater in uranium mining districts of New Mexico is done by self-monitoring programs associated with NPDES permits. Also, radiochemical assessment studies have been funded by the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Unfortunately, there has been no concerted effort to prepare broad assessments of the cumulative impacts of mining and milling in areas of interest in Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Critical review and synthesis of these types of data can produce rather useful information. For example, the publication "Water Quality Impacts of Uranium Mining and Milling Activities in the Grants Mineral Belt, New Mexico" (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1975) addresses the groundwater and surface water changes as the result of extensive uranium mining and milling production in a relatively confined area. A more recent report by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality summarizes 16 years of aqueous radium and uranium data. The study reports significant amounts of radium-226 and uranium were present in surface water in the Shirley Basin as a result of inadequate mine water treatment (Harp, 1978). In Texas, surface water and groundwater monitoring conducted by industry, as well as by State and Federal agencies, reveals little or no change of chemical quality attributable to uranium mining and milling (Gesell, 1977; Kallus, 1976). This conclusion is based on 586 samples collected from 198 stations over a period of 39 years, but primarily from 1961 to 1975. The State monitoring program by several agencies is continuing, but data reporting and interpretation is lagging. One survey (Itin, 1975) showed that none of the mine water from the 10 lakes that were sampled was suitable for human use. The lakes were also unsuitable for irrigation due to mineralization of the water by sulfate, chloride, and TDS. One of the 10 was suitable for stock watering.

Attraction, recruitment and retention of quality mining engineers is becoming increasingly difficult for many mining companies. Part of the problem is attracting young professionals, especially given the decline in graduating engineer numbers, and the other is balancing the new engineerÆs development with business needs. The evolution of the graduate program at Olympic Dam over the last five years has resulted in substantial benefits for both the engineer and the company. The program has developed to provide structured exposure to key areas of the mine enabling new engineers to step into vacated roles as the need arises. The pool of quality engineers generated by the graduate program is a buffer against high industry turnover and helps reduce future recruitment expenditure. Olympic DamÆs program goes beyond conventional recruitment of graduate engineers. Innovations designed to improve intake include the employment of graduate engineers as well as final year students, retraining of existing personnel from other backgrounds and fast track recruitment for previous vacation students. By employing a cross-section of professionals to complement the generic university graduate, the company takes full advantage of the relevant lifestyle experience belonging to the individual, which is a substantial factor in turnover. Study assistance and a salary paid for final year students and mature age students often creates a loyalty that lasts beyond graduation. Careful selection of vacation students increases the ease of recruitment at a later stage and ensures that full advantage is taken of the relationship developed previously between the company and young professional. The evolution of recruitment at Olympic Dam has seen a decline in the turnover statistics of young mining professionals.

The purification of commercial-purity tantalum powder by vacuum sintering in the temperature range 2600° to 2860°C has been investigated. Mixtures of tantalum oxide and tantalum carbide were sintered at 1800° and 2200°C. Tantalum bars containing 1 pct additions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. were sintered in the range 1800° to 2600°C. Anulyses were conducted on the sititeyed mixtures to determine the extent of removal of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon at each sintering condition. The mechanism for remova1 of each impurity, and the conditions necessary for preparing ductile tantalum by vacuum sintering are discussed. INTEREST in the refractory metals has been stimulated in recent years by the need for structural materials capable of operating at temperatures of 1100°C and higher. These metals include columbium (niobium) (mp 2468°C), molybdenum (mp 2620°C), tantalum (mp 2996°C), rhenium (mp 3160°C), and tung- sten (mp 3415°C). In addition to its high melting point, tantalum possesses the advantages of forming a solid, nonvolatile oxide at temperatures of interest and of being ductile and easy to fabricate. The classic method of consolidating tantalum from powder refined from the ores is by vacuum sintering at temperatures on the order of 2600°C. This sintering treatment both densifies the compacted powder bars and purifies the metal by causing impurities to boil out. The present work was undertaken to provide more quantative data on the relationship between sintering conditions and purity and to determine the mechanisms of impurity removal.

O processo de Monitoramento Controles, realizado pela área de Governança, Riscos e Compliance, requer preparação e verificação de um grande volume de dados. Isso feito de forma manual e com a necessidade de cruzar dados de diferentes fontes, torna o processo bastante complexo, impactando diretamente na periodicidade e acurácia dos testes. O objetivo de trabalho era prover uma ferramenta e uma metodologia que fosse capaz de automatizar esse processo, tornando-o contínuo e possibilitando análise de uma grande massa de dados, proveniente de diferentes fontes e com uma saída padronizada. Após análise de ferramentas de mercado e a realização de provas de conceito, foi definida a ferramenta e modelo de trabalho a ser aplicado. O resultado foi a implantação de um processo de Monitoramento Contínuo de Controles (MCC) que traz: ganho de produtividade, ao permitir que testes sejam executados de forma automática; ganho de eficiência, por permitir realizar o teste em toda a base de dados, sem necessidade de amostra; aumento na assertividade, por reduzir probabilidade de erro humano provenientes de atividades manuais; além de retorno financeiro e mitigação de riscos.
