I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the last twenty years or so the chemical investigation of rocks has made great advances, and it is now generally recognized that a knowledge of the chemical composition is as essential as that of the texture or mineral composition-if not more so-for the proper classification of rocks and study of their origin and relationships. Rock-analyses have vastly increased in number and, what is of greater importance, in quality. New and improved methods permit of greater accuracy than was possible in the early days, and the list of chemical constituents frequently determined has risen from the seven or eight of the greater part of the nineteenth century, to twenty or more. Indeed, rock-analyses with determinations of so many constituents ire now commonly made by the chemists of the United States and Australia, while in Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy the rarer constituents are determined more frequently-than formerly. As a consequence of this modern, accurate work, it has been discovered that some elements which were formerly supposed to be rare are of wide-spread occurrence and are often present in considerable amount. The fact is further being developed that the elements tend to show certain relations of occurrence or abundance in connection with each other. This is a fact which is applicable to the rarer elements, and which also finds a broad geological and petrological expression in the recognition of petrographic provinces. We are beginning to obtain some definite, though as yet rudimentary, knowledge of the distribution of the elements among igneous rocks. This paper aims to present the results of an investigation concerning gravitative differentiation in lava flows, based on a quantitative microscopic and chemical study of a Triassic basalt from Nova Scotia, and confirmed by data secured from a study of certain Keweenawan ophites. At Cape d'Or, Nova Scotia, near the head of the Bay of Bundy, marine erosion has exposed a series of Triassic basalt flows in which copper has been sought for a number of years. Studies of the thickest flow of the series with regard to volumetric composition, specific gravity, and grain have been made by the junior author, and measurements by students at Tufts College, together with confirmatory observations of the same nature on this and other flows by the senior writer, and chemical analyses made by the Division of Chemistry, Mines Branch, Ottawa,' all show differentiation in lava flows comparable to that in intrusive bodies. The work was made possible by the availability of the drill-cores, the property of Tufts College, and emphasizes the desirability of the study of drill-cores from other localities. Measurements of the specific gravities of certain Keweenawan lava flows of Michigan by the senior author, from material collected in 1915, will be given as a comparison to those of the Cape d'Or flow. It has been found that the specific gravity of drill-cores, or volume per cubic foot, can be readily obtained by measuring their dimensions. This can be done to an accuracy of within 1 per cent. in pieces of core over 100 mm. in length by using a micrometer gage for the diameter, and taking the average of six measurements of the diameter; and the average of four measurements of the length made with a finely graduated ruler. TEST gravity surveys were made in the Washington County barite district of Missouri on properly owned by the Baroid Sales Division of the National Lead Co. This property is located just northeast of Richwoods in the northeastern corner of Washington County, Fig. 1. The area to which the surveys were confined comprised approximately 5000 acres, of which some 525 acres were surveyed gravitationally. Gravity observations were made at 2600 points within the area, observations being confined to relatively clear and gently sloping ground. Part of the area was heavily wooded, and the terrain too rugged for either the occurrence of a commercial barite deposit or a feasible gravity survey. The relief along the central drainage, Ditch Creek, was about 140 ft, the maximum difference in elevation being 400 ft in a distance of 3½ miles. The purpose of the test gravity survey was to determine whether the gravity method of geophysical prospecting might be applied in the exploration for barite deposits in the Washington County barite district, since a satisfactory systematic procedure had not been devised to explore and ultimately determine barite ore reserves with desired accuracy. No previous geophysical work with respect to barite is known to have been done in this area. Enhance coal mine worker safety and productivity by developing a means to control and predict coal mine mountain bumps. Approach The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in extensive research to understand coal mine mountain bumps and their effect on underground coal mining in the United States. Information was collected on the geologic conditions, mining techniques, and engineering parameters at five mountain-bump-prone mines. Although research has not yet evolved to the point where mountain bumps can be effectively predicted or controlled, such studies are invaluable for providing clues that can lead to the development of mountain bump mitigation technology. Case Study Results and Recommendations Mountain bumps in coal mines are explosions of the coalbed that violently release the strain energy stored within it into openings created by mining. Such an event is not only dangerous to mine workers, but can cause substantial amounts of damage to mine equipment, resulting in productivity loss and downtime. In a coal mine, the occurrence may cause coal to be expelled violently from the coal face or coal pillars or cause the mine floor to heave suddenly. Coal bumps are usually accompanied by a very loud noise and tremors or vibrations. Such ground failure:; usually occur in the vicinity of an active gob line in an active retreating room-and-pillar panel, or at or near the face in an advancing or retreating longwall mining panel.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines' Salt Lake City Research Center has developed porous polymeric beads containing immobilized non-living biological materials for extracting metal contaminants from waste waters. Immobilized biological materials include peat moss, algae, biological polymers, and other materials that demonstrate high affinities for heavy metals. The beads, designated as BIO-FIX beads, have distinct advantages over traditional methods of utilizing biological materials in that they have excellent handling characteristics and can be used in conventional processing equipment or low-maintenance systems. Toxic metals such as copper, cadmium, zinc, lead, and mercury are several of the many heavy metals effectively removed from mine waste waters using BIO-FIX beads, Continuous cyclic testing indicated that the beads continued to produce treated effluents which met National Drinking Water Standards (NOWS) after 150 loading-elution cycles. Adsorbed metals were removed from the beads using dilute mineral acids. In many cases, the extracted metals were further concentrated to enable processors to reclaim the metals, thus minimizing the generation of a hazardous sludge, Tests indicated that use of the beads in a low­maintenance system was particularly effective for treating remote acid mine drainage waters and small toxic seeps from hard-rock mining districts.

A relatively simple model of grinding which incorporates both the Bond grindability equations and the population balance equations has been extended to form a comprehensive simulation package that can describe most kinds of conventional grinding circuits. The package has two programs, with the first consisting of an input program which helps the user to specify the prescribed circuit, while the second program performs the actual simulation. The package serves two main purposes - i) as a check on mill design, with the output providing not only predictions for the product passing size but also of the full product size distribution, and ii) as a means to assess the likely effects on the product size distribution of operating under different sets of conditions.

Integrated mining software does not generally provide tools to help the mining engineer to achieve this objective. This paper identifies some of the requirements which are desirable for such a tool and discusses how object oriented modelling can help achieve an effective design.

This paper discusses the considerations for optimum maintenance of critical ore handling infrastructure in order to minimise the cost to the business of maintenance periods. As maintenance periods are a direct interruption to production, time is of the essence and careful management of shutdown periods is essential. The ore pass systems currently in use at Xstrata Copper û Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 30 years old and have had significant wear over the years. The maintenance of these passes and their brows and chutes in a production situation is a challenge as it can potentially expose personnel to high risk situations in addition to the production interruptions. Some alternatives for mitigating the risk of working in ore passes including plugging and ballooning are described. Criteria are included for selecting a method for the safe entry into a given ore pass. Experience in adapting the method of ore pass plugs and some lessons learnt in the process are also discussed.

Chalcopyrite extraction in an aqueous acid medium occurs through solid transformations into distinct intermediaries. As intermediates, mineral phases CuS, Cu2 S and Cu5 FeS4 may generate in the leaching solution before CuFeS2 completely decomposes to Cu2+, Fe2+ and S0. Oxalic acid is a common organic acid, and it dissolves easily in warm water. Due to the chelating feature of oxalic acid, it hinders iron precipitation by composing soluble complex anions in a wide range of pH. In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using hydrochloric acid (HCl). Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp= 4.43 × 10 −10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl.

The economic value of calcium carbonate when used as an extender or filler basically falls into two categories: 1. Lessening the cost of the final product to which it is added. 2. Contributing desirable physicals to the final product. In most instances, a combination of these two may be achieved. The mineral limestone which is found in abundant quantities in many areas of the world is the source of 99% (+) of the calcium carbonate used as fillers and extenders. Precipitated, or chemically formed, calcium carbonate is also available, but by comparison, in very limited quantities.

The year 1934 saw a very thorough and intensive search for oil in Italy, both by the Government-subsidized company, the A.G.I.P., and by the few smaller operating companies. Approximately two-thirds of the exploration work, however, has been done in the Province of Emilia (northern Italy). The A.G.I.P. has been particularly active in the Emilia district and has sunk several rotary holes between Voghera and Ferrara on structures located by geophysical means in the Po Valley. Only insignificant amounts of oil have shown up in these tests to date but gas has been found in fair quantities, and apparently the company is not yet prepared to abandon its search in this part of the country without further effort. In Central Italy, the same company has put down four tests with cable tools and of these two were "dry holes" and the other two found only traces of oil. The A:G.I.P. also sank two wells in southern Italy and it is believed that in these the indications were sufficiently encouraging for the exploration work to be continued. No serious drilling has yet been done in Sicily by the A.G.I.P. or any other company. The annual subsidy granted to the A.G.I.P. by the Government for the duration of its five-year plan has been considerably reduced for 1935 and this may interfere with the completion of the coming year's program in all its details. The Società Petrolifera Italians, which is the chief producing company in the country, has continued the development of its two fields, Salsomaggiore and Vallezza, and at the same time has intensified its program of exploration. Rotary machinery has been introduced and is undergoing a thorough trial, and prospects of finding new pools at greater depths are considered good. The charcoal adsorption plant at Vallezza has operated satisfactorily throughout the year and has produced nearly 3000 bbl. of high-grade gasoline. Besides the exploration well at Rile dell'Olio, which is still drilling, another wildcat test has been started at Torre-di-Traversetolo. All operations of this company are confined to the district of Emilia. The Società Petroli d'Italia has continued to operate the old fields of Montechino, Gratera and Velleja, and has a well now exploring at greater depths in that general area. Converters have been playing an important role in the extraction and processing of metals ever since the first type of converter was invented about 100 years ago. Historically their operation has been mainly based on the experience of talented operators rather than on strict control and optimization technologies. However, in the new realities of unavoidable necessity to increase productivity and in the conditions of diversification of primary materials from various geographical areas, improving control and optimization techniques have become indispensable. In this paper a review of the authors? previous work in terms of improving control and optimization of converter operational practices related to magnetite content and precipitation, slag and metal blows, problematic and dangerous elements such as As, Sb etc. has been described by highlighting the advantages that the new control and optimization methods and tools bring to everyday converter practices. IN the manufacture of telephone apparatus a number of nonferrous sheet metals are blanked and formed to produce a wide variety of parts, which are generally small in size because of space and weight requirements. Many are given sharp bends in forming, so that they may be assembled into compact units. This study covered sheet metal of the alloys of brass, phosphor bronze and nickel silver that are most extensively used by our company. In general, the sheets range from 0.005 to 0.100 in. in thickness and from 1/4 hard to extra spring temper in hardness. As many parts function as flat springs, and others require the maximum stiffness for structural reasons, a large percentage of the metal is used in the hard and spring tempers. So, because of the necessity for the minimum radius of bend consistent with the maximum in hardness, there has been a need for information as to the forming characteristics of these sheet metals in the various alloys, tempers and thicknesses. The literature yields relatively little regarding such forming characteristics, so that designers of apparatus and tools have been largely dependent upon past experience or tool tryouts for guidance. In presenting tabular data intended as a basis for selecting the temper of the metal and radius of the bend, we recognize the influence of many other factors which are not covered in this study. For example, the angle of the bend and conditions of the metal, such as grain size and presence of impurities, as well as conditions of the fabricating process, such as rate of forming and adjustment of the tools, may all affect the result. In addition, a bumping operation subsequent to forming, which is frequently used to set the bend, increases the strain on the metal. We wish to emphasize the fact that this is not considered a scientific investigation of the formability of materials or an attempt to correlate forming, characteristics with various other properties of the metals, except in so far as such properties are controlled by commercial limits on composition and temper.

The art of flotation has developed rapidly. Numerous technical staffs and individual investigators have, by their combined efforts, developed practicable methods of concentrating ores which ten or even five years ago were considered complex and impossible of commercial treatment. Also the work of those who have been engaged in pure research on the fundamentals of flotation has helped greatly to expedite the general development of the process. However, in spite of the highly successful practical operation of the flotation process, results are obtained and things happen that we are unable to explain completely, although much is known about the theory of the process. The rapid stride in flotation concentration, it is noteworthy to point out, is due to the freer exchange of facts and data by the staffs of the larger mining companies and the patent controlling corporations, and by investigators in general. Generally speaking, one may visit any mining plant and by presentation of proper credentials, be shown all that is going on or that is being done.

Embora a metalurgia do pó e o forjamento sejam técnicas totalmente consolidadas no mundo industrializado, surge o forjamento de sinterizados e o sinterforjamento para somar as vantagens de cada processo convencional em uma única técnica de processamento. O presente trabalho propõe a obtenção de uma peça denominada cruzeta, forjada utilizando billet sinterizado como matéria prima. O pó de ferro ASC 100,29 e o grafite UNICARBO 50- fino foram utilizados para obtenção do Billet , através da metalurgia do pó convencional, pressão de 600 MPa, a partir da curva de compressibilidade. Foi escolhida a cruzeta como peça alvo, devido a seu uso na indústria automotiva. A geometria da peça foi modelada em Solidworks e posteriormente realizado o projeto e construção das matrizes para o forjamento. Realizaram-se ensaios de compressão para determinar e analisar a densificação do produto, em função dos fechamentos de poros, do billet sinterizado. Ainda, foram realizados cálculos de volume para determinar a altura do billet necessária para o preenchimento da cavidade da geometria determinada. Confeccionaram-se billet sinterizados a 1150ºC em atmosfera redutora, mantido até 900°C e rapidamente transferida para uma matriz fechada de forjamento para a execução do processo de sinterforjamento a morno. Foram realizados ensaios metalográfico, de dureza e microdureza do billet sinterforjados para validação do processo. Após este processo, obteve-se peças sinterforjadas, onde analisou-se o preenchimento, ausência de dobra e trincas macroscópicas.

THE increased strength of a polycrystal-line metallic aggregate compared with that of its individual crystals generally has been associated with complex stress distributions at the grain boundaries resulting from atomic irregularity between grains. This disregistry, together with the necessity for adjacent crystals to deform 'compatibly regardless of the single crystal crystallographic strain mechanism, complicates this mechanism so as to increase the metal's resistance to deformation. Although Taylor1 has shown from purely mechanical considerations the requirement for at least five active slip systems to absorb the complexities during the homogeneous deformation of polycrystalline face-centered cubic metals, experimental studies by Barrett and Levenson2 indicate that this is feasible only in a qualitative sense because of deviations from homogeneous deformation. Seitz and Read in their review3 state: "Unfortunately . . . present knowledge of the grain boundary influence is not sufficient to complement the work in single crystals and provide us with a good foundation for treating polycrystals." The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to clarify the gap between single crystals and crystalline aggregates by an analysis of the effects of deformational stresses. Some of the results were described by C. H. Mathewson in his 1943 Campbell Memorial Lecture.21 PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Since the performance of single crystals deformed under pure stresses has been relatively thoroughly investigated, the most significant researches are concerned primarily with deviations from single crystal behavior of large grained specimens. Qualitative grain boundary effects involving the observed amount of slip were reported by Carpenter and Elam5 in 1921. Individual crystals in a two or three grained aluminum specimen deformed by tension acted in the normal manner described by Taylor and Elam4 except for marked modifications at the grain boundaries. There the power to withstand deformation was considerably increased, leaving a ridge on the specimen where decreased slip occurred, often noticeable 34 in: from the boundary. Adcock,6 Yamaguchi,7 Seumel,8 Hirst9 and others have also reported this phenomenon as a qualitative trend. Yet attempts by O'Neill10 and Ljunggren11 to measure a difference in hardness at grain boundaries in undeformed specimens were unsuccessful. Miller12 measured quantitatively the reduction in slip near the boundary between the single crystal and polycrystalline areas of zinc specimens. These effects consisted of two parts: I. A technique was devised by the Bureau of Nines to recover coarse (plus 1.7 m) North Carolina phosphate now discarded as waste. Concentration utilizes the difference in particle sphericity between the relatively flat calcite and the rounded phosphate pebbles. Sizing, treatment in a continuous hydraulic classification system, and grinding upgraded a 17.0-pct-P205 reject to 24.5 pct P205 with a phosphate recovery of 63 pct.

In connection with a program of coal research at the Southern Experiment Station the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the various coal operators, conducts washability studies of coal from beds in Alabama and other Southern States in which commercially important deposits occur. One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data necessary for determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of coking coal. Such information is important to conservation because it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will provide maximum yields of coal with low ash and sulfur contents.

[Mr. Brown did not make his speech available for reprint.] Productivity is the Answer - Always Was; Always Will Be When Bill Balaz invited me to speak here this morning, he asked me to examine the three most important issues Consol will face over the coming decade. There are more than three. But the more I thought about that question, the more I realized all our issues come down to only one. As I reviewed the U.S. coal industry over the past ten years, and as I thought ahead into the year2000, one thing stood out. Not markets. Not government regulations. Not record tonnages. But productivity. The recent history of American coal is a tale of productivity improvement. It is a story that needs telling. And understanding. Not just for the good of the coal industry, but for the benefit of the American economy. Americans today do not appreciate the value of productivity growth. I don't say that lightly. As I review recent debate over American industrial competitiveness, as I look at certain legislative proposals, I see disturbing trends. It's not that anyone is against productivity per se. But many people seem to fear the very processes that enhance productivity. Twentieth century America enjoyed unprecedented growth in productivity. And in personal standards- of-living. Those two go together. This century has been one of change. Demographics. Education. And technology. Many new industries-cable television, computer services, telecommunications, for example-have grown from mere dreams to billion- dollar enterprises employing tens-of-thousands. And some older industries have declined. The nature of work has changed-from manual work to know- ledge work. From agriculture, to manufacturing, to services. In the mid-1960s. AT&T employed more than one million people. These were not high-paying jobs: telephone operators, linemen and equipment assemblers. Today, the successor Bell companies and their new competitors employ no more than a few hundred thousand. Because of automation. Because of enormous gains in employee productivity.
