The design of coal-mine layouts is based on the knowledge of a broad range of geological and geotechnical parameters, which must be determined from a sequence of exploration programs. It follows that any weaknesses in selecting, determining, interpreting or utilizing these data are inevitably reflected into the mine-planning process. In this paper, the main methods of exploration are reviewed and evaluated with the emphasis on acquisition, interpretation and storage of variables pertaining to mine-design. Some common problems are highlighted and recommendations are given for improving the utilization of data and optimizing coal-mine design procedures.

Annual production of more than 4,000,000 tons of 0.74 percent copper ore and coincident handling of over 5,000,000 tons of waste at the open-pit mine of Castle Dome Copper Co. near Miami, Ariz. takes a lot of power. Manufacturers have ever co-operated with mining companies in providing the required equipment to suit the problem. Power equipment suppliers have done much to make possible the economic and profitable production of copper from low-grade ores. In the future, as mining operations will necessarily handle even lower-grade ores, the ability of the manufacturer to supply the power and mechanical equipment to produce more metal at a fair and reasonable price will be the good right arm of the miner. About 27,000 tons of concentrate is produced from the 4,000,000 tons of ore.

INTRODUCTION Manganese carbonates are nodulized by Cia. Mineral Autlan, located in Ongongo in the state of Hidalgo in Mexico. This kiln is fed minus 15 mm material at the rate of 1870 tpd. About 920 tpd is nodulized into a commercial product having a size range of 15 mm to 12 mm. The kiln also produces about 320 tpd of minus 12 mm fines and 40 tpd of chimney dust. Currently, the minus 12 mm fines are being recirculated to the kiln and the chimney dust is not being utilized. It has been found that there exists a market for manganese to be used as feed to the ferromanganese and silicomanganese furnaces. However, a coarse, lumpy feed can only be used in these furnaces. Accordingly, it has been proposed to screen the fines at 6 mm and agglomerate the minus 6 mm fraction along with the chimney dust and suitable binders. This paper presents the results of a feasibility study and test work aimed at producing an acceptable agglomerated product from the kiln fines for use in the ferromanganese and silicomanganese furnaces. Since the agglomerated product will have to be handled and loaded into trucks in the kiln area and transported over long distances, a minimum strength of 200 N is expected to be necessary. They should also have enough initial strength to be stockpiled and result in a minimum of breakage. A third important requirement is that the agglomerates should be resistant to disintegration during combustion. The recirculating fines were to be agglomerated in their original state, if possible, that is, without grinding. This eliminated the possibility of pelletizing as an agglomeration method. Based on a few laboratory trials, the briquetting method seemed most attractive, and a test program was initiated to explore the briquetting process.

Este artigo visa estudar polímeros como quitosana, amido entre outros com elevada disponibilidade como agentes aglomerantes no processo de pelotização de minério de ferro e discutir sobre o impacto da sua utilização. Os polímeros foram testados preliminarmente no teste de bancada (teste em pneu), para medir qualitativamente a tendência de aglomeração. Os polímeros com melhores resultados foram testados em escala piloto, que simula o processo industrial. Nos testes preliminares, o amido gelificado apresentou os melhores resultados de resistência física de pelotas verdes e secas. Entretanto, no teste piloto o amido não foi capaz de controlar a umidade superficial. Os outros polímeros não foram considerados promissores, principalmente devido ao controle da umidade superficial.

The thiosulfate leaching of gold generally requires the presence of a catalyst such as cupric tetraammine, Cu(NH3)42+, to obtain reasonable leaching rates and gold extractions. Unfortunately, this same catalyst that accelerates gold leaching also tends to accelerate thiosulfate oxidation to tetrathionate and other species. It is therefore imperative that a detailed understanding of the role of this catalyst and the factors affecting it is obtained. It is equally important for plant application that a method of assessing the catalyst be developed. In this work the role of the cupric tetraammine catalyst was studied using geochemical modeling for speciation prediction, thiosulfate leaching of gold ores, and chemical analyses of resulting leach solutions. It was found that the variables of pH, temperature, and the concentrations of ammonia, thiosulfate, and total copper all work in concert to affect the concentration of the cupric tetraammine species. It was also found that the presence of sufficient thiosulfate and cupric tetraammine was critical to the success of the leach.

The excavation of a coal mine or any other mine, tunnel, or quarry, below the water table establishes a void towards which ground- water will flow. Inflows into the mine, if significant, can cause not only problems such as flooding, and/or muddy floors, in the mine, but commonly also require disposal of poor quality groundwater. The flow of groundwater towards a mine is accompanied by a decline in groundwater levels, which may extend up to several kilo- metres around the mine. This may seriously effect vegetation, stream flow and existing users of groundwater. At the pit face groundwater gradients can also cause slope stability problems and where a water table is intersected, increase blasting costs.

Staff turnover percentages on projects in the minerals sector are at levels that would not be accepted in business less than five years ago. While this is being driven in part by the shortage in skills to service the industry there are underlying factors, beyond the increases in remuneration, adding to the turnover. Having identified the five major reasons why people do not stay, this paper confirms that leaders and the various styles are common to all companies. The paper comments briefly on these major reasons and suggests the problem is firmly with management. It also offers possible remedies to reduce the attrition and therefore improve the opportunities for a quality project evaluation.

In the present work, the viscosities of molten FenO-MgO-Si02 and FenO-MgO-CaO-Si02 semi-synthetic slags for nickel flash smelting were measured in the temperature range from 1473 to 1723K by a rotational viscometer. The ratio of Fe to Si02 was fixed at 1.2, calcium and magnesium oxide contents varied in the range from 2 to 8 mass% and 9 to 12 mass%, respectively. The results showed that silicate anions became smaller by increasing CaO content, which results in a decrease of the viscosity of the slag. In the case of MgO addition the viscosity behavior was complicated. At MgO content below 11 mass%, the viscosity increased with the increase of MgO at all temperatures tested. However, when the MgO content was above II mass%, the viscosity decreased slightly for FenO-MgO-CaO-Si02 system. At higher MgO contents, low-viscosity slags can be obtained by adding CaO. At a given composition, the viscosity decreased with increasing temperature. The higher the temperature, the more MgO can be added before saturation. The effect of Fe304 on the viscosity was quite significant. The viscosity of slag increased by 300mPa's at l573K when Fe304 content varied from 3 to 9 mass%. The viscosity values are presented as the functions of temperature and composition. A comparison between FenO-MgO-Si02 and FenO-MgO-CaO-Si02 systems is given in this study.

Experiments were made with a batch reactor to determine the effect of gas pressures, temperature, and gamma radiation intensity on the reaction CO + Ch ? COC12. The equation, [dp = 0.0110 (1 - 0.01t) (PCOI)1/2 PC12] where [dP] is the change of pressure of phosgene with time (atm/hr), t is the temperature (°C), PCO and PC12 are the reactant pressures (atm), and I is the radiation intensity (r/hr), was found to best fit the data. Oxygen and a large ratio of reactor surface to volume retarded the reaction, but inert gases had no effect. A low-temperature reactor system is proposed to take advantage of the conditions which give a high reaction rate with gamma radiation and a simple scheme of product purification.

This paper deals with frequency distributions in the field of mineral resource evaluation when a grid is superimposed on the study area and metallogenetically significant attributes are coded with respect to the cells of the grid. It is shown that the parameters of a negative binomial distribution for frequency of mineral deposits per cell can be derived from the parameters of a gamma distribution for the coded attributes. It is also shown that an exponential model for spatial correlation of cell values and Matheron's discrete Gaussian model for indirect transfer functions may provide a suitable methodology for relating cell value distribution to cell size.

In many civil or mining engineering works, the stresses and deformations of natural or excavated slopes due to the combined effect of self-weight and initial stresses are of interest. Because of the mathematical complexities of this problem, however, no complete exact solution exists for the simplest case, that of assuming the stress-strain relation of the rock to be perfectly elastic. Efforts have therefore been directed toward numerical and experimental technique. The stresses within an elastic slope have been obtained by LaRochelle,1 using the photoelastic and finite difference method to determine the difference and sum of principal stresses. Subsequently, Finn,2 Hoyaux and Ladanyi,3 and Duncan and Dunlop4 attempted to solve the same problem by using the finite element method. The problem was also investigated by Brown and Goodman5 and Brown and King6 who emphasize the importance of the effect of loading or unloading procedure on the stress distribution within the slope. Although the geometry of the slope and the boundary conditions involved are identical or similar, the results obtained by these various authors by no means agree. It is therefore necessary to review briefly the results of elastic analysis in order to lend credence to the methods used in the solution. Although the stress-strain behavior of some rocks may be reasonably approximated by the elastic modrl, other rocks generally exhibit an elasto-plastic behavior with strain hardening or strain softening as shown in Fig. 1. Experiments show that for most rocks, the stress-strain relationship is approximately linear from the origin to the point P (neglecting the small concave region under low stresses). En este artículo se desarrolla un proceso alternativo al SART, viable para recuperar cobre y zinc por precipitación fraccionada o selectiva. El proceso propuesto es aplicable a soluciones (Barren) producto del proceso Merrill Crowe de precipitación de plata y oro con polvo de zinc, que es recirculada como agua de proceso al circuito de cianuración. En el trabajo se determinan los parámetros para una exitosa precipitación fraccionada de zinc y cobre a partir de una solución cianurada en medio alcalino. Se concluye además que la recirculación de la solución cianurada con menores contenidos de cobre y zinc mejora la recuperación de plata y el rendimiento del proceso de control de cianuros en la solución agotada que constituye el relave final.

In situ leaching of uranium by aqueous ammonium carbonate containing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as oxidant results in the partial dissolution of sulfides. While some of the sulfide sulfur is oxidized to sulfate, a considerable portion is oxidized only to thiosulfate and polythionates. Polythionates poison the ion exchange resin used to extract uranium. At the Palangana operation in south Texas, the trithionate ion (S3062-) was found by infrared spectrometry to be the major resin poison. Treatment of ion exchange feed solutions with hydrogen peroxide only resulted in partial conversion of reduced sulfur species to sulfate. Trithionate conversion was particularly slow. Poisoning of the resin also occurred from the ammonium chloride eluant, which built up trithionate because of recycling. This was essentially eliminated by chlorinating the eluant before yellow cake precipitation.

DISCUSSION L. E. Djingheuzian (Canadian Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa)—In their Summary the authors say: "Reconciling the grinding efficiency with good metallurgy is still a problem." In the discussion of the first paper8 in his reply to W. I. Garms, Mr. Myers states: "Our grinding process with smooth I-in. balls has reduced by nearly one half the metallic losses in the fine micron sizes of the tailing. This is simply because less of the fine micron sizes are produced. Since the + 65 mesh size is the same as formerly, a higher percentage of the intermediate sizes are developed. These sizes have the highest floatability, require the least reagents, and use less floating time. "These factors contribute so heavily to the overall economies that dropping our power grinding gain from 28 pct back to 19 pct is a small detail. However, we feel that this is only a momentary situation and that eventually the best features of the grinding and flotation processes can be brought together, which is as it should be." Italics are mine. The above statements, to me, appear to be the answer to the opening statement in the Summary. Denoting the costs at different power grinding gains as: Power Grinding Power Grinding Gain, 28 Pct Gala, 19 Pct Cost of grinding G G1 Cost of flotation F F1 Value of metallic losses T T1 where G1 > G2 F3 < F, and T1 < T, we have: G1+Fl+T1<G +F+T. Since the authors accept the idea that "grinding in flotation plants becomes part of the &apos;conditioning&apos; of the feed to flotation",4 i.e., that in flotation the ball mill is primarily a conditioning machine, it can be postulated that Tennessee Copper grinding at cost G1 is more efficient than grinding at lower cost G. This can be directly inferred from the Conclusion of the paper. Mr. Myers also emphasizes this at the end of his reply to Mr. Garms: "that grinding is for the purpose of preparing flotation feed and not grinding per se." This, to me, in the final analysis means that when the efficiency of grinding is weighted against the conditioning factor, the former becomes a function of efficient conditioning, hence, within the system in which proper conditioning is the dominant factor, the best grinding efficiency is provided by grinding which will contribute towards the optimum conditioning. This brings us again to the statement: "that if every grinding unit were considered as a conditioner for each following step, efficient grinding plants would become much easier to design."&apos; In other words, grinding equipment should be balanced against the flotation equipment and against chemical reactions taking place in the system. F. C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee)— The authors&apos; discussion of the probable ball motion in a slow speed high dilution mill is very interesting. When the 1-in. balls have worn down to about one fourth of their original weight they apparently first develop a flat surface; as wear progresses this flat face becomes concave, and other concave faces appear. It seems more probable that the first flat face may form at the softest part of the ball surface, and that each succeeding contact tends to force this flat face into sliding contact with a larger round ball; than that the flat faced ball tends to pair off with a particular round ball and to travel with it continuously. When the small worn ball has a flat face and is in sliding contact with a large round ball, the surrounding large balls will assume a more or less definite pattern, and slide against the worn ball, thus producing secondary concave faces. The primary concave face seems to be larger and better developed than the secondary faces. The ball charge can be divided into "concaves" which show at least one concave surface, "intermediates" which have developed flats or incipient concaves, and "rounds." Ball slippage is always present in a tumbling mill, and the mutual ball movement is necessarily a combination of rolling and sliding. The sliding motion is apparently concentrated upon the smaller worn balls which nest between the surrounding larger round balls. When each worn ball starts its upward path in the mill its primary flat or concave surface fits against a larger round ball, and the round ball slides upon it. The action may be something like that of the ball separator in a ball bearing, except that the worn sliding balls are always under considerable pressure. The material is ground under the combined influence of breakage 1—by impacts between falling balls and between falling and supported balls, 2—by being nipped between rolling balls, and 3—by being rubbed between the sliding balls. The rubbing action will be increased in the presence of worn balls with concave surfaces. The rubbing action probably produces a considerable portion of the finely ground slimes in the product. The worn balls commonly approach tetrahedrons in shape, and are very different from concavex, each of which has two equal opposed concave surfaces. Montreal, April 6-7. "Resilient" and "bullish" were the terms used by R. D. Mushlitz of Asarco and K. C. Hendrick of Noranda Sales Corp. respectively, to describe the near term prospects for lead and zinc. The two men delivered their predictions at a joint meeting of the Lead Industries Association and the Zinc Institute held here. In speaking before a packed audience, Mushlitz insisted that "the lead industry is far from the sedentary one which many would have us believe, and although it may be slow and tortuous at times, . . . it is a viable and progressive industry which won&apos;t give up easily to the various pressures. . . . and, in the long run, will prevail."

Ix the crucible-method of assaying ores for silver a certain amount of litharge is essential to supply sufficient lead to collect the precious metals. The object of this paper is to point out that the use of a .large excess of litharge in the assay of some ores will give results for silver that are uneven as well as low. So far as I know, however, an excess of litharge does not affect the results obtained in the crucible-assay of ores for gold. The main reasons for using, in the crucible-assay, much more litharge than is required to give the necessary lead button are : 1, its action as a flux; 2, its action as a desulphurizer; and 3, its action as an oxidizer, especially on metals like copper and nickel, whereby they are forced into the slag as oxides and thus prevented from passing into the lead button. Hence, by the use of much litharge in the crucible-assay more-ore can often be taken than in the scorification-process, and a lead button obtained which can possibly be cupelled at once or after a single scorification. The method is specially advantageous with an ore carrying much copper or similar impurity and poor in silver, when the assayer does not wish to resort to a wet-analysis for the determination of the silver. It is well known that some ores give better results when assayed by the scorification-method, while others give better results by the crucible-method. For several years I have noticed that, when much litharge was used with certain sulphide and arsenical ores, the results were considerably lower than when the scorification-method was used. "The presence of respirable quartz-bearing mineral par-ticles has been well documented in many coal mines, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration regulations address the quartz content of mine dusts. Unfortunately, the correlation between the quantity of respirable quartz-bearing mineral particles and the pathogenicity of the dust is not strong. Work is currently underway by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/U.S. Bureau of Mines and work is being included in the Respirable Dust Center Program by Dr. Seehra to determine the surface availability of quartz in mixed composition mine dusts. However, this paper propose a possible source of surface quartz or a spe¬cial region in the coal that may contribute to the pathogenicity of selected particles in the respirable dust.Assumed in this model is the hypothesis that either the cleat surface is coated with quartz or some cytotoxic sub-stance that in the body is capable of destroying macrophage and thus inducing a fibrotic response (1) that during the frag¬mentation a reasonable proportion of the respirable size coal particles contain some of the original cleat surface and that these particles have the same order of in vivo cytotoxicity as do the quartz particles. It may be that these cleat surfaced respirable size particles are only contributory to the overall pathogenicity of the coal dust, nevertheless, there are enough of these particles to to considered as a potential source of the cytotoxic dust particles.This paper demonstrates that if the cleat surfaces are mineralized with quartz or have a pathogenic coating, then in many mines there will be enough respirable coal dust particles containing some cleat surface to cause a fibrotic reaction. To understand why some of the dust particles contain as part of their surface some of the cleat surface, consider what happens when a beer bottle is broken. While there are a large number of beer bottle fragments, many of the fragments, particularly the larger fragment sizes, will have as a fraction of their surface part of the original beer bottle surface. The model and mathematics of this problem have been worked out by Meloy.(2-4)In the homogeneous IAC model, (2-5) a fragment or par-ticle resulting from comminution is equally likely to occur anywhere in the material being broken. Therefore the probability of a particle of size x having part of the cleat surface in it, p(x), is proportional to x. Thus:"

THE creep properties of metals have as-sumed increasing importance in recent years and many investigations have been made on various phases of the problem. In the past year the annual lectures of the Insti-tute of Metals Division1 and the Iron and Steel Division2 were concerned with this subject, and are excellent reviews. For many years the creep properties of lead and lead alloys have been investigated at the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co., and it is hoped that the present paper will contribute knowledge of some of the factors that influ-ence creep. Lead, being a metal that recrys-tallizes readily at room temperature, is an excellent material upon which to investi-gate creep phenomena because of the sim-plicity of the apparatus needed, and it might be expected that results would apply to some extent to elevated-temperature tests of other metals.

INTRODUCTION The UN-General Assembly adopted an Agreement on 28 July 1994 entitled ‘Agreement relating to the implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ((UNCLOS) of 10 December 1982’. The Agreement came into force on 16 November 1994, and consequently, the inauguration of the International Seabed Authority (ISA, or the Authority), located in Kingston, Jamaica. The Authority is the organization through which States Parties to the Convention (168, as of 25 July 2017) shall, in accordance with the regime for the seabed and ocean floor and subsoil thereof beyond the limits of national jurisdiction (the Area) established in Part XI and the Agreement, organize and control activities in the Area, particularly with a view to administering the mineral resources of the Area. The legal regime for the administration and development of the mineral resources of the Area as it now exists are available in Part XI of the Convention1 which contains the legal framework governing “activities in the Area” and in Annex III to the Convention which contains the “Basic Conditions of Prospecting, Exploration and Exploitation” with respect to the resources of the Area2. The 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS is the so- called ‘parallel system’; as elaborated in article 153 of the Convention. The essential elements of the ‘parallel system’ include assured access for States parties and their nationals to seabed mineral resources along with a system of site-banking, whereby ‘reserved areas’ are set aside for the conduct of activities by the Authority through the ‘Enterprise’ itself or in association with developing States or in joint venture with the contractor who provided the particular reserved site2.

THE beginning of the war and the events leading up to it precipitated a near crisis in the aluminum industry. Demands for the metal reached proportions far beyond the prewar production capacities and, in addition, the submarine menace seriously curtailed the importation of bauxite from South America, hitherto a chief source of high-grade ore. The situation required an intensive search for domestic ore to augment the reserves and in October 1941 Congress directed the Department of the Interior to investigate the extent, mode of occurrence, and quality of bauxite in the United States. In December of that year the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey began the search for bauxite in Arkansas, where more than 90 per cent of the domestic ore had been produced and where the greatest amount of bauxite was known to occur. The program involves the geophysical and geological investigation of the Arkansas bauxite region and the core drilling of areas considered favorable for the occurrence of bauxite deposits. Cores taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone are sampled and analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Little Rock. The information from each of the deposits discovered is then assembled, the bauxite is graded with respect to its possible utility, tonnage estimates are made, and the whole is presented in the form of a war minerals report. Thirty-eight new bauxite deposits had been discovered and investigated at the end of the calendar year 1944, and the presence of several others had been indicated by the drilling. More than 5000 holes had been drilled throughout the bauxite region, and more than 60,000 chemical analyses had been made of samples taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone. A study of the chemical analyses led to certain general conclusions not only with regard to the chemical composition of Arkansas bauxite, but also with regard to its component minerals. Charts and diagrams based on these conclusions have been developed for practical use by the Bureau of Mines: (I) to serve as a check against laboratory analyses, (2) to present tonnage estimates of ore bodies based on mineral composition, (3) to illustrate the relationship of tonnages of bauxite to the alumina, silica, and iron content, and (4) to serve as a control for mining operations by providing a means for quick estimates of the value of the ore from a partial analysis of its chemical constituents. The use of charts and diagrams similar to those discussed in this paper is not new. The use of the trilinear diagram for studying the ultimate analyses of coals as originally proposed by Ralston in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 93 (1915) showed that the various ranks of coal fell in different areas on the diagram and that volatile matter, calorific value and other properties could also be plotted by the use of contours.
