This paper gives a brief description of VirtuoBlast technology ù a new, automated and highly interactive stereo vision technology which has been developed in CSIRO Exploration and Mining. VirtuoBlast technology is an integration of three advanced technologies - close-range digital terrestrial photogrammetry, oblique stereo imaging or high-speed stereo imaging, and temporal-spatial image matching technique. VirtuoBlast has been developed for the automated 3D measurement of blasting through rapid collection, processing, analysis and visualisation of 3D data related to blasting. A major field trial has been undertaken in August 1998 at the KCGM super pit. The field trial involved three applications of the technology, namely, pre-blast 3D surface mapping; post-blast 3D performance measurement; and temporal-spatial modelling of dynamic blasting process. This paper presents some results from this trial with emphasis on the application of VirtuoBlast technology to pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement. Application to the temporal-spatial 3D modelling of dynamic blasting process will be presented in a separate paper. Pre- and post-blast surface models derived using both VirtuoBlast technology and conventional field survey method are presented. The differences in results using the two mapping methods clearly show that the digital photogrammetric technique has many advantages over conventional survey methods. Results of pre- and post-blast from the field trial have demonstrated the potential of VirtuoBlast technology to efficiently perform pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement of production blasts. Demonstrated applications of VirtuoBlast technology to automated 3D measurement of blasting are showing an exciting future in advancing blasting science and modern blast design. The basic technologies are in place, however, continued improvements to the functionality, robustness and outputs are needed. The challenge is to build on the current state-of-the-art, by developing techniques and hardware which can be easily transferred to and implemented by the mining community. Current and future research and development will see improvements in imaging systems, automatic image processing and 3D data analysis.

The purpose of this report is to describe the design features and techniques used in operating a plant capable of producing about 1,500 pounds of titanium metal per day. The process used was based on the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium, a modification of what is generally known and spoken of as the Kroll process. Sponge metal crushed to melter's specifications was the end product of the operation as conducted. The report is divided into sections covering general plant layout and the major unit operations. These, in turn, are each divided into discussions of the equipment, operating procedures, and typical results. Descriptions are given in more detail than is generally expected of a technical report. During 1953 and 1954 over 130 engineers and businessmen, officially representing some 80 industrial, chemical, end engineering firms, visited the operating plant, and their questions, which indicated a serious interest in details, have served as a guide for the material contained in this report.

It appears that Utah is about to add another mining district to its already impressive roster. This time it is the Great Salt Lake, whose high-mineral content waters are being subjected to intensive study aimed toward the recovery of potassium, magnesium and lithium compounds by solar evaporation techniques. Among the firms conducting such experiments is Lithium Corporation of America, which, in a joint venture with West Germany's Salzdetfurth A.G., is operating evaporating ponds and running engineering tests at a site near Little Mountain, about ten miles west of Ogden. Here, on the clay flats along the northern portion of the lake, LCA holds leases and options totalling about 55,000 acres in the Bear River Basin.

O objetivo geral foi produzir e caracterizar a microestrutura de um compósito abrasivo nanoestruturado no sistema D-Si, via sinterização cíclica de alta pressão e alta temperatura (HPHT). A sinterização cíclica em alta pressão e alta temperatura de compósitos foi feita a partir de uma mistura de 70% diamante e 30% de Si como ligante, o qual foi moído por moagem de alta energia sendo então partícula nanométricaso. A sinterização foi realizada por 1 a 4 ciclos de pressão (P) de 7GPa- 4GPa e temperatura (T) 1600°C-300°C, para um tempo (t) de 1min. As análises de difrações de raios X mostraram a ocorrência, além do diamante, de SiC, FeSi e grafite. As análises de MEV e EDS mostraram uma distribuição uniforme dos cristais de diamante na matriz de SiC. A análise da região de fratura das amostras mostrou que todos os cristais de diamante foram abrangidos pelo ligante, ou seja, a liga formada a partir da interação de carbono e de silício. Finalmente, conclui-se que esta pesquisa aprimorou a técnica de produção de MCDs para uso futuro em bits de brocas de perfuração de poços de petróleo.

The development of steels with improved abrasion-corrosion resistance for use in underground components in South African gold mines is described in terms of design, manufacture, and performance. Based on the concept of microstructural design, new compositions were formulated to provide the optimum structures and properties. Extensive laboratory tests were conducted, and an industrial melt was produced. The resultant materials were tested for fabricability and machinability, and various components were manufactured. According to the preliminary operational results, these alloys exhibited outstanding performance in wear-plate tests, and are very promising for general application in underground components.

In addressing the challenge of sustainable development, the North American mining industry finds itself operating in two culturally distinct frameworks. Companies are based in the developed world where a profoundly environmental ethic prevails with an emphasis on inter-generational equity – preserve now for the future. Increasingly, their operations are in the developing world where the emphasis is on intra-generational equity, and the distribution of wealth – providing opportunity for improvement today. The paper discusses the further implications of these realities and the factors facilitating or hindering the ability of mining companies to meet social expectation in these two distinct global cultures.

"Recycling of used aluminum beverage cans(UBCs) is one of the important issues for aluminum manufacturer presently. The direct re-melting of UBCs shows two problems. One is a reduction in molten aluminum recovery and the other is a contamination of other metals such as Ti and Fe from paints. Both problems are caused by paints coated on the surfaces of aluminum cans. Removal technique of the paints, therefore, has been required. Although roasting and shot blast techniques have been developed, both were not successful in removing the paints effectively. A swell-peeling method has been applied to remove them using a methylene chloride solution with acids and it works very well. Small laboratory scale tests have been carried out to develop the commercial process and clarify the mechanism of the swell-peeling method in the present study.When the surface area of UBC is more than 10 cm2, peeling time is independent of the surface area, about 60 seconds, because swelling phenomenon is controlled by the penetration of the liquid through the fine pits on the surface of the paint. This is good for a commercial process. Peeling takes place when the swelling force generated by methylene chloride exceeds the adhesion force between the film and the surface of aluminum, that is weakened by the coexisting acid, especially halogenated acetic acid."

A hydrothermal bentonite located in the high Sierras in Nevada is being mined and processed for use as a natural dietary supplement. Because hydrothermal clay deposits are normally zoned and not uniform in composition, a special stockpile was constructed to assure uniformity of processed products. The stockpile of clay was layered and rectangular in shape. Channel samples were taken from 10 locations around the stockpile and were mixed and quartered to provide representative samples. The samples were then chemically and mineralogically analyzed. The results showed excellent uniformity. The mineralogy and chemical analyses will be discussed in the paper.

Before covering the separate methods used in mining geophysics, it may be well to mention some current basic geophysical prospecting concepts. As in most fields, a better understanding and means of studying these fundamentals usually provides the more common improvements, rather than new principles being discovered. The relative detail and complexity of most mining geology often results in the use of geophysics in problems it cannot solve. On the other hand, suitable applications are often ignored or left unrecognized. To minimize this, it is important to consider geophysics as a phase, or additional tool, in geological or exploration engineering.

"The Ontario Division of Inca Metals Company, a Unit of Inca Limited, operates eleven mines, four mills, three refineries, one smelter and one iron ore recovery plant. All but one mine, mill and refinery are located within a fifty kilometer radius of Sudbury, Ontario. A mine-mill complex is located some 100 kilometers west of Thunder Bay on the shore of Lake Shebandowan and a nickel refinery at Port Colborne.During the past 10 years the use of recycled water in our milling operations has increased to more than 95% at each mill. This high degree of water reuse has reduced the (a) need for fresh water and (b) the contaminant level of the downstream aquatic environment. The aggregating of effluents in a common receptor provides a process water having a consistent quality thereby minimizing upsets in mill metallurgy while concurrently improving the operating economies and the downstream aquatic environment."

Recently an inorganic salt, sodium polytungstate (SPT), has become available that allows the preparation of non-toxic solutions of relative densities up to 3.1. It is relatively expensive and at the higher relative densities achievable, highly viscous. Alternative inorganic compounds may in the future be identified that overcome these limitations. The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd (AMIRA) has initiated a project to examine possible alternatives. However, it has been found that by the addition of finely divided ferrosilicon to solutions of SPT, relative densities of up to 4.0 can be achieved. A laboratory technique for density fractionation of sized mineral samples utilising this finding has been developed. This is currently being extended to study the potential applications of such liquids and suspensions in dynamic systems for mineral, coal and recycled waste separations.

However, India is rich in ores and mineral, but E-waste recycling is necessary due to the report of national and international studies, which cautioned on the generation, treatment and accumulation of e-waste in India. Current data indicate that the total domestic e-waste generation including imports is around 382979 MT, however waste available for recycling and actually recycled are 144143 MT and 19000 MT, respectively. In which recycling by non-formal and formal sector are 95% and 5%, respectively. On the other hand, India has developed expertise in handling verities of metallic wastes in an organized and safe manner. The development of individual process or combined processes for handling the e-waste is underway. Eco- friendly and energy-saving processes are necessary to comply with stringent environmental regulations. The paper includes the recent trend of e-waste generation, recycling process and its future prospects particularly in India.

These changes must be understood and considered in definition of the strategy of the business. Implementation of the strategy must assure commitment from all departments within a company, and this commitment sometimes involves compromises to assure that a department's goals mesh with the overall business objective such compromises must be externally motivated. i.e. for benefit of the customer. Complete implementation transcends internal departments to all aspects of managing the efforts in the marketplace.

NTRODUCTION Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for pre¬dicting the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface move¬ment data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data col¬lected could not provide information other than surface movement. In a paper by Luo and Peng (1992), the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements using an electronic total station in subsidence survey are discussed. If the errors in the measured surface movement components are left untreated before calculation for deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain and curva¬ture), the errors will be carried over to the deformation indices and enlarged if improper numerical procedures are used in the calcu¬lation. It should be noticed that in protecting structures affected by ground subsidence, accurate surface deformation indices are much more important than surface movement. In order to improve the accuracy of the collected surface movement data and the calcu¬lated deformation indices, a number of numerical procedures are also proposed in the same paper. The proposed techniques include: a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data. DATA SMOOTHING Because of various factors, the measured surface movement data always contain errors, small or large. In order to better utilize the collected data, a data smoothing method is proposed to correct the errors in the measured movement data. The method uses the same concept as the influence function method (e.g., Knothe, 1957) on which many existing subsidence prediction methods are based. The data smoothing method makes necessary corrections on the measured movement for the point of interest according to not only the measured movement at this point but also those at the surrounding points. The contribution of a surrounding point in making the correction for the point of interest is inversely propor¬tional, in exponential form, to the distance between them. O trabalho consiste na avaliação das Tensões Residuais através da técnica dos Furos-Cegos. O componente em estudo consiste em chapas de Aço A36 aplicadas para compor a estrutura de prensas hidraulicas. Com auxílio do software Solid Works versão 2013, foi realizado a simulação do estado de tensões sofridos pelas chapas quando a prensa hidraulica encontra-se em trabalho, determinando assim o seu fator de segurança. Em seguida, pelo método da aproximação sucessiva, foi adicionado furos-cegos ou furos passantes com diâmetros variados ao longo da geometria das chapas a fim de verificar o comportamento dos estados de tensões. Portanto, através da aplicação de furos-cegos nas chapas, foi possível identificar o diâmetro e posição ideal que permitiu um ganho significativo no fator de segurança das chapas, permitindo assim, reduzir o número de chapas no processo impactando diretamente nos custos e no tempo de fabricação do equipamento.

This paper, the first of two papers covering the development of a metallurgical process for the treatment of a complex ore, describes the bench-scale experimental Program undertaken as a basis for initial process design. The results of using various potentially applicable process steps are detailed and the basis for selecting certain of these steps for Pilot-plant development is outlined. A process consisting of the steps of sulfate roasting, leaching, copper recovery, solution purification, zinc electrolysis, and brine leaching for lead recovery was recommended for further study. THIS paper describes the bench-scale development of a sulfate roasting process designed to recover copper, lead, and zinc from a complex ore. The extrapolation of the bench-scale results to pilot-plant design and the results of pilot-plant operation will be described by Lund, et al.' in a subsequent paper. Several years ago, the research divisions of the St. Joseph Lead Co. became responsible for the development of a metallurgical procedure to treat a complex sulfide ore containing copper, zinc, and lead sulfides. The primary objective was to devise a procedure which would permit economic recovery of the nonferrous values. As could logically be expected, the study of conventional flotation procedures was undertaken; in addition, however, because the physical nature of the mineral association in the complex ore indicated that physical methods of ore beneficiation might not prove to be entirely satisfactory, a program also was established to investigate alternative methods of direct metallurgical treatment for recovery of the metal values. Exploratory test work by the St. Joseph Lead staff led to the conclusion that a sulfate roasting technique represented the most attractive approach for a direct metallurgical process. Sulfate roasting would provide for the selective conversion of the nonferrous values to forms soluble in conventiona1.1 leaching agents and would permit their efficient separation from the insoluble iron and other gangue materials. It should allow efficient utilization of the thermal energy available from oxidation of the sulfide raw material, and might provide an opportunity for recovering byproducts such as iron and sulfur. The decision to evaluate a selective sulfation procedure as a basic processing step also was influenced by the excellent results obtained by the St. Joseph Lead Co. in using this procedure for the recovery of cadmium from zinc sulfide concentrates. The choice of selective sulfation as a major processing step served as a basis for an extended experimental investigation of the process with bench- and pilot-scale equipment to prove its feasibility. St Joseph Lead Co., aware that Battelle Memorial 1nstitute had participated in the development of several fluidized-bed sulfate roasting procedures, asked Battelle to undertake the bench-scale development of a suitable sulfation process. This paper describes the procedure used and the results obtained at Battelle in the treatment of the complex sulfide ore. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Nature of the Raw Material. The sulfide ore deposits of interest are essentially a massive sulfide, with the indivudual ore minerals being extremely fine grained and intimately intergrown with each other and with the associated gangue. The zinc in the ore is present mainly as sphalerite (ZnS), the lead as galena (PbS), and the iron either as pyrite (Fes2) or as pyrrhotite (FeS). Table I shows the chemical analysis of various individual samples of the ore. These analyses illustrate the variability of the ore body and impose a rather severe requirement on any type of metallurgical process—that of being able to tolerate probable wide variations in the assay of the head ore. "As scrap usage increases, it is often necessary to “dilute” the melt with primary aluminum to ensure the finished product meets compositional specifications. Secondary raw materials, particularly postconsumer scraps, often include high levels of unwanted or “tramp” elements, such as iron and silicon in the case of aluminum. Recent literature on this issue cites several causes including inherent contamination during processing as well as ineffective segmentation at end-of-life. To address this accumulation problem, “upgrading” solutions have been developed including: dismantling of end-of-life products, spectrographic or magnetic sorting of shredded scrap, and “filtration” technologies that remove tramp elements in the melt. Although it is clear that upgrading strategies enable increased usage of scrap, it is not clear that they would be economic or efficient. This work presents a set of analytical methods, based on chance constrained optimization, to quantify the potential environmental and economic value of several scrap upgrading technologies.IntroductionAluminum recycling has a number of key environmental and economic benefits. Compared to other materials, aluminum production has one of the largest energy differences between primary and secondary production: 175 MJ/kg for primary compared to 10-20 MJ/kg for secondary[1]. With energy and cost savings in mind, many producers now have targets of increasing their usage of secondary materials[2, 3]. However, the accumulation of impurities in these recycled material streams provides a significant compositional barrier to these goals[4].A growing number of studies and literature would suggest that accumulation of unwanted elements is a growing problem, in all recycled material streams. In the case of aluminum, the list of problematic impurities is quite large, including but not limited to: Si[5, 6], Mg, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cr[7], Fe[5-7], Cu[6, 7], V, and Mn[6]. Metals recycling is a metallurgical process and is therefore governed by the laws of thermodynamics. The removal of unwanted elements in the scrap stream is dictated by the energy considerations of the melt process. Compared to many metals, aluminum has a high degree of difficulty in the removal of tramp elements, due to thermodynamic barriers. Therefore, with no simple thermodynamic solution, producers must identify strategies through-out the production process to mitigate this elemental accumulation."

This paper presents a practical approach for utilizing a computer model to determine the mass balance for a typical UBC recycling complex - starting with raw materials input, through scrap preparation, delacquering, melting, alloy adjustment and casting. This model is especially concerned with metal unit losses throughout the recycling complex with emphasis on metal losses at the melting furnace. The model also addresses the application of hardener alloys, metallurgical salts, chlorine for demagging, and reagents for acid gas emissions control. Other issues addressed are dross generation, acid gas emissions and dirt and fines to landfill. One benefit of the model is the conversion of annual production objectives to hourly production rates and resource requirements taking into account production schedules, maintenance downtime, and operations inefficiencies.

The normal practice for processing complex sulphide ore has been to grind with steel balls and/or rods in steel mills before flotation. Little thought had been given to the effect of grinding media on flotation selectivity of copper-lead -zinc ore until 1960 when Rey and Formanek(1) published their experiments on sphalerite floatability after grinding in a porcelain mill with ceramic pebbles. The studies by Rey and Formanek had a pronounced effect on the milling of copper-lead-zinc ores in Canada and possibly throughout the world at a time when autogenous grinding was creating a great deal of interest. The impression was created, and possibly still exists with some mill men, that grinding an ore in the absence of steel will result in a loss of selectivity between copper, lead and zinc minerals. This is in spite of the fact Rey and Formanek's experiments showed that the "naturall floatability" of sphalerite was not apparent after grinding in a porcelain pebble mill in an alkaline pulp.

The area on which oil and gas development is reported covers 30 counties, which are included in the Texas Railroad Commission's District No. I. This area not only includes the old established Balcones fault-line group of producing fields but also includes the southwest extension of this trend and some of the deeper Wilcox (Eocene) exploratory development. (Fig. J.) In the old Balcones fault-line zone, three new fields were discovered during 1941. These fields are comparatively small, producing from Dale limestone or Austin chalk. No new fields were discovered during the year in the Edwards (Lower Cretaceous) limestone horizon. One new shallow field was discovered in the Reklaw (Eocene) sand horizon and, in the southwestern part of the district, one oil field and one gas field were discovered in the Navarro (Upper Cretaceous) sand horizon. An extremely important extension was made to the one producing Wilcox (Eocene) field of the district in the Washburn Ranch field of La Salle County. The district produced 6,650,357 bbl. during 1941, which was a 12 per cent decrease under production for 1940. Approximately 4,954,000 bbl. of this total production was produced by the three Edwards limestone fields, Luling, Salt Flat and Darst Creek, the remaining production coming from the other 43 active fields in the district. In all, 3694 wells were producing at the end of 1941, compared with 3559 wells at the end of the previous year. During the year, 139 new producing wells were completed and 29 wells were abandoned in the producing fields. The increase in producing wells represents an increase in new wells over abandonments in these fields, together with a decrease in wells temporarily shut down as of the end of 1941. The majority of production drilling was carried on in the following fields; Bee Creek, Chicon Lake, Elm Creek, Gas Ridge, Pearsall and Tenney Creek. Approximately 250 wells were drilled during 1941, of which 110 were exploratory wells completed as failures throughout the district. Considerable exploratory work was continued during 1941 along the Wilcox trend. Geophysical work employing various types of geophysical methods and leasing activity was continued along this trend, particularly by the major companies. The significance of this activity is apparent from the successful extension and development in the Washburn field of La Salle County, where several well-developed gas-and-oil producing horizons have been developed in the lower Wilcox section between 5100 and 5600 ft. as noted in the following paragraphs. Continued exploratory activity along this general trend as far as present conditions will permit is predicted for 1942.
