The biological stage of reclamation is the third final stage in remediation the damaged mining terrains, which is carried out following the completion of the mining technical stage. The biological stage of reclamation is carried out through restoration of the vegetation layer. The biological reclamation includes all activities related to the introduction into the terrain of vegetation, microorganisms, insects, and animals, with the acceleration of the succession and creating conditions for a sustainable ecosystem close to the natural one. It comprises of all anti erosion and other activities such as the preparation of the land for growing agricultural crops, sowing grass seeds, planting seedlings, amelioration of the soil and further care for the vegetation until its final place on the land. Mineral and organic-mineral ameliorants for biological reclamation were studied. The basic mineral ameliorant is Bulgarian natural zeolites. The zeolitic-rich tuff samples provided from Golobradovo deposit was characterized by their chemical and mineralogical composition and ion exchange properties and X ray analysis. The average content of clinoptilolite was found to be more than 80%. The materials had ion exchange capacity (NH4+) varying from 100 to 110 meq/100g. Chemical modifications of natural clinoptilolites were made in order to form active phases of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and microelements. Slow-acting mineral ameliorant was developed. Organic-zeolite substrate for biological reclamation was developed. This new product is a mechanical mixture of organo-matter and modified zeolites. Agro-chemical parameters of new ameliorants were determined. The substrates including studied overburden dump soil and mineral or organo-mineral ameliorants are produced. Glass beads have been surface treated with Dri-film to render them oil wet by n-octane to varying degrees, and capillary desaturation curves have been determined by the restored state method. The desaturation curves show a regularity of increasing displacement pressures as the oil wetness increases. This has been used to compute apparent contact angles between n-octane and water on glass. The family of desaturation curves also shows a regular crossover, such that the residual wetting liquid saturation values are in reverse order to the displacement pressures. A semi-logarithmic variation is shown between the apparent contact angle and the residual saturation. The desaturation data are interpreted to mean that the wetting liquid ceases to be a continuous phase within individual pores before the capillary pressure can be raised sufficiently to force out the wetting phase completely. The saturation of wetting liquid at which this break in liquid continuity occurs is higher as the oil wetness decreases. INTRODUCTION The petroleum industry has for some time been using measurements of capillary pressures on porous media for research correlations and engineering calculations. It has been generally recognized that the capillary desaturation curve reflects the character and arrangement of the pores within the media and the distribution of fluids within the pores. Methods have been proposed for computing pore size distributions, tortuosity factors. and relative permeabilities from capillary desaturation data.' There is little doubt that the interactions between porous rocks and their contained fluids resulting from surface forces play a dominant role in determining the magnitude and direction of capillary pressure measurements. There have been attempts to introduce as variables two quantities — inter-facial tension and contact angle — generally used to char- acterize surface forces, but in spile of the wide interest in these quantities as important variables, few definite conclusions have been drawn concerning their qualitative or quantitative significance. INTERFACIAL TENSION The interfacial tension appears in a capillary pressure function given by Leverett for correlating capillary desaturation type curves. Use of the interfacial tension in this function seems to be justified by other experiments reported. Apparently, interfacial tensions have little bearing on wetting phase residual by desaturation. CONTACT ANGLE The contact angle was utilized as a variable by Bartell and co-workers"." in tests on displacement pressures, later recognized as the initial point of capillary desaturation. Although Leverett did not include contact angle in his original formulation of the capillary pressure function, later workers suggested its addition. Few reports are available to show variation of residual liquid with contact angle as a result of capillary desaturation.' The problems attendant to measuring contact angle within a porous medium are great. As a consequence of the lack of a concrete approach to a measurement. the workers in this area of research have adopted the general expression of "wettability" to indicate the relative position of two liquids saturating a porous body. It has been shown that gross measurements on porous systems, including capillary desatura-tions, are sensitive to wettability. Attempts at giving a scale to wettability in terms of contact angle through capillary desaturation curves have been made and these apparently are steps in the right direction. In these attempts presence of many other variables precludes attainment of exactness. Also, as a result of other variables, it has been impossible to correlate changes in apparent contact angle with changes in other physical measurements of the systems in question. The present work is an attempt to eliminate as many variables as possible in measuring capillary desaturations resulting from changes in contact angle within a porous medium.

In a 1985 seminar, we were told that overoptimism abounds in Artificial Intelligence (AI), that A1 is neither a science nor a technology yet, and that we will be both exhilarated and disappointed with AI. In fact, even today, there is no single accepted definition of AI; however, certain features have been identified by AI researchers as essential to consider an entity.(e.g: machine or program) to be intelligent. According to Shank (1987), these features include communication (to be able to communicate with), internal knowledge (knowledge about itself), world knowledge (awareness and knowledge about the world outside), intentionality (knowing what one wants and a plan to seek it, ie. goal seeking behavior), and creativity (being adaptable to changing conditions). None of these figures would individually define intelligence; however, each would be a part of intelligence in its own way. The prospects for the development of entities with AI have never been as good as they are now. The combination of advancements in computer hardware and software along with new insights into the ways in which we store knowledge and use it for problem solving has enhanced the potential for the creation of intelligent entities. After some unbounded optimism of a major breakthrough in the fifties and frustrating disappointments in the two following decades, it appears now that AI has emerged from research labs to industrial practice. This is confined by the growing number of repeat applications of AI in business and industry to the extent that AI can now be considered a technology.

The main ore.mine.rals are the oxides pyrolusite and cryptomelane and the 'o'xide-silicate braunite. The main gangue minerals are hematite, limonite and quartz. The deposits of high grade oreò(-above.45 per cent Mn) range in size from 50 tons to many thousands of tons but most of them are in the 500-5,000-tons r .nge .

On the banks of Huzzah Creek there is a roadhouse where a group of Ozark folks were whiling away a Sunday afternoon last spring. "How about some of that 'Who Broke the Lock Off the Hen House Door,' " suggested Spinny. The old man obligingly picked up the fiddle and began the sprightly tune. His long, seamed face had ruddy cheeks and a grey stubble jaw. A thick fedora was pushed back off his scraggly hair and he wore a heavy jacket. It was 73 degrees fetchin up for 75 on that May afternoon, so naturally he sweated. The Ozark is fiddling country. The natives, to whom a half dollar looks as big as a manhole cover, put great store by fiddling, along with the other fine things of life such as fishing and horse raising. On the wooded hills, 1200 to 1700 ft above sea level, there are numerous tumbling streams with plump fish, and in clearings along the roller coaster roads are long-legged, frisky looking horses. People in the Ozarks have a reputation for self-reliance. However, they are cheery and friendly to strangers. Trespassers are very seldom shot at-except if they do something wrong or by accident.

In this paper, we present a physiographic classification of gravel deposits, identify some field measures of aggregate quality, and describe sampling strategies for mapping aggregate quality in the Front Range Urban Corridor of Colorado. Gravel occurs in four types of deposits along the Front Range of Colorado: (1) piedmont alluvial fans, (2) high dissected terraces, (3) high (continuous) terraces, and (4) floodplains and low terraces. The four deposit types are the basis for definition of gravel-deposit models, which differ in geologic environment, deposit characteristics, deposit size, environmental impacts of mining, and post-mining use. Of the four types, floodplains and low-terrace deposits have been exploited most for gravel. High terraces also have been mined. Deposits of high dissected terraces and dissected alluvial fans have produced minor amounts of gravel, mostly for use as local fill. Studies to identify useful field measures of aggregate quality and to determine the appropriate scale for sampling were conducted on gravel deposits beneath the flood-plain and low terraces of the South Platte River north of Denver and the Cache la Poudre River between Ft. Collins and Greeley. Gravel deposits of the South Platte were selected for study because they represent the last major resource of gravel for aggregate in the Denver metropolitan area. The Cache la Poudre valley is the primary source of gravel aggregate for rapidly urbanizing areas around Ft. Collins and Greeley. Of all the field measures of gravel quality, the most important is particle size. Various parameters that measure particle size were investigated, but the easiest to determine, and the most useful to the aggregate industry, are measures of the proportion of coarse sizes. Particle size varies widely in gravels of the urban corridor. Gravel lithology, particularly the presence of deleterious particles such as reactive volcanic rocks and decomposed rocks, must be determined to assess aggregate quality. Studies of South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels have not revealed large proportions of deleterious lithologies. Studies of particle shape revealed only small numbers of physically weak shapes in both the South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels. Particle shape does not appear to vary from place to place in the gravels. Rounding, or the ab¬sence of angular corners, may play a role in the tendency of loose gravel to yield under load. South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels are rounded, and rounding tends to increase upstream. Before the quality of gravel in a valley can be assessed, the stratigraphy of the gravel must be known because it affects sample design. If only a single gravel layer is to be studied, only the thickness of the gravel must be known before sampling. If, however, more than one layer of gravel-distinguished by particle size, sorting, or lithology-is present, sampling must take into account the thickness and distribution of each layer. For example, three gravel layers of different particle size underlie the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte. The tributary Cache la Poudre, on the other hand, contains gravel layers that can be distinguished only locally and vary slightly in particle size. Sampling experiments were conducted on gravel bars in the South Platte River and in gravel pits on the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte and Cache la Poudre Rivers. Experimental results indicate that, even where sample error is large, regional and stratigraphic variation may be measured if it is large relative to sample error. Using vertical trench samples weighing an average of 40-90 pounds, down-stream decrease in coarse particle size was mapped for Cache la Poudre gravel, and differences among superposed gravel beds were measured for South Platte gravel.

THE importance of topography to geology is so commonly underrated as to deserve to be pointed out again and again. The relation of topography to the different branches of geology may be seen best by a glance at them all. Geology is well understood to consist of the observation of facts about rocks as materials of the earth (geognosy ), and the explanation of those facts (geogeny). The facts to observe are: I. The paper summarizes the results from geochemical orientation and project surveys in North and South America. The orientation surveys were designed to characterize the soil gas response over buried mineralization and compare soil gas geochemistry with other geochemical exploration techniques for overburden. In addition to successful tests in orientation surveys, soil gas geochemistry has been applied in large-scale exploration programs for gold, copper, and zinc. The studies includes results from several of these surveys, including the Crandon Zn-Cu massive sulfide deposit in Wisconsin, USA, and the Ruby Star skarn Cu deposit in Arizona, USA.

The past 15 years has .seen a dramatic increase in the use of computers in the mining industry. Sanford (1) has provided a comprehensive listing of available programs by application within the mining industry as a whole. Figure 1 below illustrates some of the primary uses and computer techniques currently in application in surface coal mines. As shown in Figure 1, computers have been applied to virtually every facet of surface mine development and operation. In particular, many programs presently exist to significantly reduce the time and effort required during the, planning and design phase of a surface mine. Close examination of the approach taken to utilize existing programs, however, reveals that in most instances applications have been implemented piecemeal with the result that users must be fairly sophisticated in their knowledge of computer applications.

The township of Yalloum was established in 1921 to provide accommodation for the work force on the sites of the power station and open cut which were to become the basis of Victoria's electricity industry.A company town, Yallourn flourished, and in its heyday in the 1950s the township had a population in excess of 5500 residents.However the town was sited over a valuable coal field. In the 1960s, studies conducted by the State Electricity Commission indicated that excavation of this coal as a continuing development of Yalloum Open Cut was the optimum choice to meet the growing energy needs of Victoria. Operation in what became known as the Township Field commenced in 1979 and the completion of the overburden stripping was successfully achieved on target in 1991.

Although the advantages of Solvent Extraction for separation/purification of relatively concentrated solutions are well known in Extractive Metallurgy, its use for the recovery of elements present in low levels only recently has been discussed, with particular attention devoted to precious metals. In this work, the extraction behaviour of Cyanex 471X towards silver, from an acidic chloride medium is reported, the extraction and stripping isotherms and related kinetic features analysed. Results on the selectivity of silver extraction against high contents of iron, copper and lead are discussed. Phosphine sulphide extractants are generally associated with solvation mechanisms: analysis of the extraction pathways along with the possibility of reaching a suitable loading in the organic phase are also presented.

Hard rock underground mining has been wedded to the drill-blast method of breaking rock. Current practice and technology have focused on greater efficiencies in the blasting and handling of ore, on the basis that thelower costs that come with larger scale operations compensate for the waste dilution associated with the bulk methods. However, it is suggested that new technology is available or is on the horizon that could completely change the shape of hard rock mining in the 21st century. Hard-rock continuous-mining machines, possibly assisted by high pressure water jets, coupled with automated sorting and materials handling systems, could re-orient the miner's focus to winning metal rather than mining tonnes of ore. More continuous mining processes could accelerate the penetration by high technology in the hard rock underground mine, with the potential of greater manpower productivities and lower costs per tonne of metal produced. This new technology will be important in maintaining a competitive supply of metals, given the falling headgrades of the orebodies remaining for development and the increasing market threat from manufactured substitutes.

The geophysicist is interested greatly in the resistivities of different formations or parts of the earth's crust; sometimes he is interested in a single figure in the nature of an average, or what may be called the effective resistivity, of all the formations or parts of the crust at a given location to a certain depth. Conversely, the engineer whose work is concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines in such a manner as to avoid electrical interference between these two types of facilities is concerned very much with this effective resistivity; to a lesser extent he is interested in the resistivities of individual formations. In connection with his work the coordination engineer often estimates the effective resistivity of the earth from measurements of the mutual impedances of lines; in other instances he derives from measurements of a different type the resistivities of different layers of the crust and synthesizes these to obtain an estimate of the effective resistivity. In connection with problems concerning the coordination of power and telephone lines, measurements from which earth resistivities can be estimated have been made at many points in the United States by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and its associated companies, in cooperation with various power companies and with railroad companies having electrified sections of line. Other such measurements have been made by the Joint Subcommittee on Development and Research of the Edison Electric Institute and the Bell Telephone System. A study has been made of the correlation of these data with the ages and types of materials of the strata of the earth's crust at each of the test locations. The purpose of this study has been primarily to provide information to assist in predicting the order of magnitude of effective resistivities to be used in the preliminary consideration of problems concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines. To make the results of such a study most useful, it is essential that the geological data to be secured when such a prediction is wanted be readily obtainable. Data on the ages of strata and the types of materials composing geological structures can usually be obtained, therefore particu-

A current trend in blasting of large volumes of rock is to use increasingly larger diameter shot holes. The use of large diameter holes meant; correspondingly large explosive charges will be loaded and detonated, and, if special efforts are not made, will result in more damage and vibration beyond the intended blast area. With the rising awareness of environmental factors, vibration control becomes increasingly important. Equally important is the preservation of intended lines and grades, and in some cases by blasting with care, slopes can be safely steepended. In the past, vibration control was established to prevent damage to man-made structures. The quarry or open pit itself can be regarded as a structure composed of rock. Far too little attention has been given to the effects of blasting on rock walls. The primary purpose of blasting is to break rock. If the integrity of the rock has been destroyed beyond intended lines and grades, the excavation will be more costly than originally anticipated. The increased cost will not only be from in¬creased excavation due to overbreak, but also increased maintenance due to blast induced wall instabilities
