Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.

The heap leaching process has developed into a low-cost method for recovering copper, gold and silver from large and small deposits of low-grade ore. The earliest known heap leaching process with chemicals occurred in about 1752 and is attributed to Spanish miners percolating acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto (Ran Zyl, et al., 1988). In 1969, US Bureau of Mines research¬ers proposed the use of dilute alkaline cyanide solutions as a low-cost means for recovering gold values from low-grade ore containing micrometer-sized particles of gold (Miners News, 1991). The modern-day heap leaching process typically involves the percolation of leach solutions through controlled lifts of stacked, low-grade ore (crushed, aggomerated or run-of-mine) in a heap for chemical extraction of precious and base metals into solution (Fig. 1). The enriched (pregnant) solution is collected by gravity flow in lined basins, sumps and ponds for processing and recovery of the target metals (copper, gold and silver). The barren solution from the recovery facilities is recirculated to the heap, along with chemical reagents and makeup water, for containment of all process solutions in an enclosed and environmentally sound system. This involves the use of low-permeability liner systems beneath the heap leach stacks to maximize solution recovery and protect the underlying ground water (Fig. 1). This article discusses the typical heap leach liner systems currently used by mining companies in North America. The most successful heap leach pad liner systems from past precious metal operations generally include an underlying, low-permeability soil bedding material; a geomembrane liner, and an overlying protective cover fill.

The Bannockburn gold area covers the four townships of Bannockburn, Argyle, Hincks, and Montrose, lying in the western part of the Matachewan district of Ontario (see Figure 1). The geology of these four town-ships was studied by H. C. Cooke of the Geological Survey, in 1917-18, and is shown in his map of the district. In the fall of 1930, a rich gold-bearing quartz vein was discovered in the northwest part of Bannockburn by B. S. Ashley. A prospecting rush followed the discovery; many claims were staked in the Bannockburn area, and, during the summer of 1931, a considerable amount of prospecting was done.

Nos últimos anos a thyssenkrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico – CSA tem passado por uma série de mudanças no que diz respeito ao perfil de qualidade das matérias-primas, principalmente em relação à piora de qualidade do minério de ferro extraído do quadrilátero ferrífero em Minas Gerais, o qual compõe 100% da carga metálica utilizada pela CSA. Uma das principais mudanças observadas foi o aumento do teor de fósforo na carga metálica (sinter produto, pelota e granulado), tornando-se necessários estudos para minimizar os impactos na elevação de P no gusa, tais como, desenvolvimento de novos fundentes e aditivos. O fósforo é um elemento que traz poucas alterações nos processos de Metalurgia da Redução (Sinterização, Coqueria e Alto forno) e existem métodos eficazes de redução destas alterações [1], porém é extremamente prejudicial à qualidade, produtividade e custos de uma Aciaria, principalmente em produções de aços que exigem baixo teor de fósforo em sua composição [2]. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar os esforços realizados pela Sinterização em relação à redução do teor de fósforo no Sinter Produto e consequentemente no Gusa, por meio de simulações de qualidade envolvendo novos fundentes e aditivos.

IN CHARACTERIZING tars obtained by the low-temperature carbonization or North Dakota lignite, infrared spectra have been an invaluable aid in both qualitative and quantitative examination. Quite early it became evident in the tar-research program of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, that the small number of published spectra available for hydroxy aromatics would be inadequate for comparative purposes when dealing with the wide range of compounds present in coal tar; therefore, compiling a catalog of spectra was initiated as a continuing part of the tar program. As these spectra should be valuable to other investigators in this and related fields, they are being presented in this report. This group or spectra (figs. 1-98) represent 97 compounds, largely phenolic materials. The major problem of this project has been the availability of materials for examination. Samples have been obtained from commercial and private laboratories or synthesized at the Bureau of Mines Lignite Experiment Station, Grand Forks, N. Dak.

In underground coal mining, there is often a need for supplemental support for mine openings. In the past, one of the most common types of supplemental support was wooden posts that were installed against the roof using opposing wooden wedges. Underground, wood has the tendency to shrink from moisture loss and dislodge if not under load. Another drawback to using wood is the variability in strength between posts. Defects in the wood such as knots can cause weaknesses that often lead to premature failure of supplemental support. Many mines that install large amounts of supplemental support in certain areas of the mine such as bleeder entries in longwall mining have switched to using steel props rather than wood posts or cribbing. The reactions of steel props under loading are well- defined and there is little variability in strength between props. Steel props and can be fabricated so they can be used in a variety of roof heights without modification. Wooden posts often have to be cut to a usable length underground before installation. This adds to the installation time of the wooden posts. Steel props are more compact and can be lighter than their wooden counterparts, depending on the length and carrying capacity. Often times it is desirable to prestress the supplemental support to improve roof stability. This is often problematic and time consuming with some types if supplemental support. With these factors in mind, research was undertaken at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) to design a new steel roof prop. Several new clamping designs were developed and prototypes were fabricated and tested in the labs at SIUC in the spring of 2003. The designs were modified and refined and the first full-size prototype roof prop was tested in January 2004. With the success of the full-size prototypes, a cooperative research program was established between SIUC and Excel Mining Systems, Inc. to further develop the new prop. Development went smoothly and the prop has performed as expected. In February 2005, SIUC and Excel entered into an exclusive licensing agreement. The prop design under license, the K-Prop, will be installed using a lightweight portable hydraulic jacking system under design that can be used to prestress the props, applying load to the roof and floor during installation. By varying the installation load, the prestress load can be varied from about 1,000 to 10,000 pounds (4.448 to 44.48 kN) and at the same time, the carrying capacity of the K-Prop can be varied from 10,000 to 100,000 pounds (44.48 to 444.8 kN). The K- Prop is composed of only 3 pieces and laboratory testing has suggested that it can be installed by a pair of workers in less than two minutes. The speed of installation of the K-Prop should significantly reduce the total installed cost for supplemental support and should provide a safer working environment by prestressing the prop, which will add support load to the roof and floor during installation.

Recent studies in the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area show that the layered rocks can be subdivided into two main units, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower unit is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and sills. In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and,pas-s into conglomerates. This passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds. These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked-by areas of shallow-water deposition. -.

Discovery of the Vera-Nancy deposit in late-1995 followed 12 years of active exploration in and around the Pajingo Epithermal System, an andesite hosted veinfield covering an area of 150 square kilometres at the northern end of the Devono-Carboniferous Drummond Basin in North Queensland. Early exploration targeted open-pittable resources in the numerous auriferous veins and it was not until 1994 that exploration focus shifted to drilling to depths below about 100 metres from surface, which resulted in the Vera-Nancy discovery. That deeper drilling process is still at a very early stage of coverage of the epithermal system as a whole and substantial potential exists for additional discoveries.Drill-out of Vera-Nancy has to-date established a gold resource in excess of 1.4 million ounces. Mine development is proceeding via a twin decline system with first stoped production scheduled for August 1997.

Durante as últimas décadas, vários formatos das placas estreitas do molde foram desenvolvidos para reduzir a ocorrência de trincas transversais nos cantos das placas, de modo a melhorar a qualidade e o rendimento do produto final laminado. Placas estreitas do molde com um chanfro foram aplicadas com sucesso à produção na Máquina de Lingotamento 4 da Usiminas / Cubatão. Aspectos do desenho das placas de molde e da aplicação prática delas, bem como o impacto da aplicação na qualidade do produto final laminado são abordados. A inspeção visual dos produtos laminados após a linha de decapagem mostrou que a ocorrência de defeitos de superfície nas bordas pode ser reduzida significativamente com a utilização da geometria de molde chanfrada.

From the viewpoint of practical economic engineering the main value in studies of demand and supply lies in the information they give concerning the next movement of price. The title of this discussion is too comprehensive for detailed analysis and it will, therefore, be narrowed to the question of price measurement. The oil operator is interested primarily in net profits. Prices, costs and production determine them. Production is here used in its broadest sense. It includes refining and marketing. It is an operating problem. Prices and costs are economic considerations. Though costs are an important element of prices and profits, the subject is too large to be treated in a brief paper of this sort. In the long run, costs govern prices, but for the purpose of gaging prices in the immediate future the relationship of current demand and supply are more significant. Operating, expansion, retrenchment, sales and storage policies of oil companies are largely influenced by the feeling of executives concerning this relationship. The stockholders of companies whose executives are wrong may suffer. Investors who err in their judgment may likewise lose. On the other hand, oil companies and investors who appraise these factors correctly and move accordingly will profit. It is an important subject worthy of careful consideration. The author has been asked to discuss the subject for 1928. From the beginning of the year until the first of June, as illustrated by Fig. 1, over-supply prevailed in the face of restricted production, but from June to September, with record consumption, demand slightly exceeded supply and oil came out of storage in the United States as a whole. One of the main problems of the oil man is to decide whether this condition will continue and what the next movement of prices will be. Before he can do so he must have an understanding of the underlying conditions and of the facts that led to the present situation. With these facts in mind he is in a position to measure the effect of the present relationship of demand and supply on price and is afforded a perspective that may enable him to look ahead for a short period of time. "Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

Surface contamination of minerals during fine grinding may occur due to coating of one material on the other. This can alter the surface chemical properties and adversely affect the separation of minerals by physico-chemical processes. In dolomite-silica system, selectivity was completely lost (compared to a synthetic mixture) after wet grinding of the minerals in spite of using a dispersant. Adsorption and surface characterization studies were conducted on silica particles separated after grinding with dolomite. SEM-EDAX analysis indicated the presence of dolomite on silica particles, which could cause the loss of selectivity.

The Olympic Dam mineral discovery by Western Mining Corporation (WMC) in South Australia has been shown to contain one of the world&apos;s largest known deposits of copper and uranium; gold and silver are also present. Development of the deposit jointly by WMC and the BP Group is awaiting commitment, with planning based on initial production of gold in 1987 and copper and uranium in 1988.

The hydrogen desorption kinetics of pure and Nb-doped magnesium hydride film samples was investigated by using a Sievert-type apparatus. The overall activation energy and the reaction order controlling desorption are (141±5) kJ mol-1H and n 4 for Mg hydride and (51±5) kJ mol-1H and n 1 for Nb-doped (5% at) Mg hydride indicating that, in the doped sample, hydrogen desorption is controlled by the H migration in transformed h-Mg layers. Structural analysis performed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) show that the catalytic effect of the Nb dopant is connected with the formation of NbH0.89 nanoclusters dispersed in the Mg hydride matrix. It is suggested that the catalysis process is also connected to the presence of Mg-Nb hydride interfaces where the transfer of H atoms preferentially occurs by connecting h-Mg grains and by the role of the MgH2-NbH0.89 interface as preferential site for the dissociation of the hydride phase.

The Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan, has nominated ‘maximising our advantages’ from ‘Mining Boom Mark II’ as the focus of the 2011/2012 Australian Budget. Australia therefore requires a bolder and better integrated economic reform agenda if it is to convert current strong demand for mineral commodities into lasting prosperity that benefits all Australians. Lasting prosperity, well past 2012, will only be achieved if Australia can effectively reverse a decade-long deterioration in the minerals industry productivity performance due largely to capacity constraints that inhibit growth. This requires improving the efficiency of energy networks, transport infrastructure, water markets, health and education services, access to skilled people and by streamlining costly, inefficient project approvals’ processes. The common thread that holds this economic fabric together is the importance of having the right people using the most appropriate technology within the correct policy framework.In December 2010, employment in the minerals sector stood at 187 200; 21 per cent higher than one year earlier, 15&#160;per&#160;cent&#160;higher than the industry employment peak prior to the global financial crisis in 2008 and 14 per cent greater than anticipated by industry modelling published in 2008. Managers and professionals make up approximately 15 per cent of the total workforce, yet minerals-related higher education programs (mining engineering, metallurgy and geoscience) continue to be chronically underfunded, requiring direct industry subsidies of more than $25 M over the last decade. Also, the publicly-funded Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector continues to fail the industry in the delivery of quality training programs. Importantly, the industry is a key driver of economic activity in regional and remote Australia and is the largest source of private sector employment for Indigenous Australians who comprise up to a quarter of employees in certain locations.This presentation looks at what our industry and country need to achieve to ensure we have the right people for the challenges ahead. **This is an abstract only. In situ complete stress-strain characteristics of large coal specimens by W. L. VAN HEERDEN, B.Sc. Hons. (Pret.) (Visitor) The significance of ;n situ tests on large coal specimens is briefly reviewed. Tests aimed at obtaining complete stress-strain characteristics of large coal specimens with high width-to-height ratios are described. A formula for the relationship between strength and width-to-height ratios of coal pillars is proposed, and the influence of width to- height ratios on the deformation characteristics of pillars is discussed.

The formation of annealing textures in high-purity silver, from the various rolling textures obtanled in the course of texture transition, was studied. It was found that from a brass-type rolling texture the recrystallization texture is mainly (120) [211] type, which is quite different from the recrystallization texture of brass. From a predominantly copper-type rolling texture, the reclystallization texture is mainly (100) [001]. The recrystallization texture of silver- varies also with the degree of purity. In each case, however, the reorientation can be expressed as [Ill] rotations of 30° to 40°, which is consistent with the oriented growth theory of the formation of annealing textures. ThE recrystallization textures of rolled silver were studied long ago by Glocker and co-workers (1924-27) and were reported to be (113) [iil] upon annealing at low temperatures.1 Since that time, no further study of the recrystallization textures of silver, particularly with the modern techniques of quantitative texture determinations, has been reported in the literature. In a previous study2y3 it was found that the rolling texture of high-purity silver (99.999 +pct pure) is changed gradually from the common silver- or brass-type to the copper-type by raising the temperature of rolling from 0" to 200°C. The formation of annealing textures from the various rolling textures in the same material is, therefore, of considerable interest. The present paper constitutes the results of such a study. The physical composition of coal and the distribution of its physical constituents will partially determine the efficiency of the process chosen for coal preparation. Distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by preparation processes. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. These evaluations will help provide information needed for the production of coal that meets definite petrographic composition specifications. etrographic composition and degree of coalifica-tion of coal can determine the choice of cleaning processes and equipment used in coal preparation. The purpose of this paper is to present data on studies of the preparation processes of breakage, sizing, cleaning, and blending and to show the effect coal&apos;s petrographic composition has on these processes. Herrin (No. 6) and Danville (No. 7) Coals from Illinois were used in these tests. Nomenclature used herein is that approved in the Glossary of the International Committee for Coal Petrology,&apos; based primarily on the Stopes-Heerlen system of classification2 and used in coal petrography laboratories throughout the world. BREAKAGE TESTS Breakage tests of Illinois coals related to petrographic composition have been conducted at various times at the Illinois State Geological Survey. These tests have been classified under two headings -impact tests and compression tests. Impact tests, as the name implies, consisted of breaking the coal by a sharp, sudden force. Impact tests were further divided into fall tests and block tests. Compression tests consisted of applying a constant pressure on a piece of coal until the coal fractured.

O refino de grão da estrutura bruta de solidificação da liga Cu-30%Zn (latão 70/30) a partir de adições de P e Zr ao banho líquido foi investigado utilizando-se microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica e microanálises. Foram conduzidas medidas de tamanho médio de grão pelos métodos planimétrico e do intercepto linear e foram realizadas microanálises por espectroscopia de dispersão de energia (EDS) e de comprimento de onda (WDS). Nas amostras obtidas observa-se que, quando são adicionados P e Zr, sempre ocorre a diminuição do tamanho médio de grão em relação àquele das amostras onde apenas P é adicionado. O menor tamanho médio (? 200 ?m) ocorre para um teor de 0,16% de Zr. O refino de grão coincide com a formação de precipitados geralmente facetados, contendo Zr e P em uma proporção equivalente à da fase ZrP. Sugere-se que as adições causaram a formação de partículas sólidas de ZrP, sobre as quais ocorreu a nucleação heterogênea de grãos da fase Cu-?, resultando no refino de grão.

Primary grinding in SAG mills is gaining more importance with respect to the conventional crushing, rod and ball milling operations. This is due to the reduced operating costs generated by lower steel consumption. However. SAG milling is inherently susceptible to more severe risks and problems since it attempts to combine several stages of the conventional crushing and grinding into a single stage. This paper analyzes the SAG milling operation by predicting the motion of rocks and steel balls. The well-known discrete element method (DEM) is used to calculate the trajectories of individual entities, and their collision with one another. A computer code previously used for studying the motion of grinding media in ball mills is enhanced to handle the interaction between heavy spherical steel balls and light chunks of rocks, usually ellipsoidal in shape. The DEM based software called MILLSOFT can animate the charge motion for different design of liners. A case study of a 9.75-m diameter SAG mill is presented and the effects of lifter bar height and configuration on the overall dynamics of the charge are discussed. Also the effect of spacing between liners on lifting the charge is presented. This new approach has a large potential because it shows in detail the effect of each design or operating parameter on the performance of SAG mills.
