No cenário econômico atual do mercado siderúrgico, otimizações de processo que aumentem o rendimento metálico estão no alvo das empresas competitivas. Além disso, cada vez mais os clientes exigem níveis mais elevados de qualidade e menor índice de recusa. Neste contexto, desenvolver trabalhos que conciliem otimização e garantia de qualidade são prioritários para o negócio. O objetivo deste trabalho é definir o menor descarte de início de lingotamento para aços com aplicações severas com total garantia de qualidade. Foi elaborada uma metodologia específica para avaliação da qualidade dos produtos: placa e bobina laminada a quente. Primeiramente, avaliou-se a quantidade de inclusões não metálicas em placas, o que permitiu determinar o comprimento de descarte mínimo necessário para garantia de qualidade das placas. Posteriormente, análises de inclusões também foram realizadas em bobinas para confirmar os resultados da ação de alteração de tonelagem de descarte. Os resultados mostraram que as placas produzidas após o descarte determinado pelo estudo resultaram em bobinas aptas para atendimento das aplicações, sem nenhuma perda de qualidade.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is one of two undersea tunnels which are part of the Boston Harbor Clean-Up Program. The tunnel is 7.7 km (25,160 ft) long, bored to a 4.3 m (14 ft) diameter in the Cambridge Argillite Formation and was finished to a 3.5 m (11.5 ft) diameter final concrete lining. The owner is the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) who is a regional authority responsible for overall design and construction. The tunnel's primary purpose is the transport of untreated effluent from Nut Island facility in Quincy, MA to the new treatment plant at Deer Island. Two sludge lines are installed for the transport of sludge from Deer Island to Nut Island. During construction the contractor encountered fault zones, fractured strata, and soft ground tunnel sections which liberated more ground water than was originally anticipated by the project designer. Ground water was controlled during mining and the placing of the final lining. The final lining of cast-in-place concrete had to be backfill grouted to cut off water inflows and provide contact for equal tunnel loading which is critical in long-term design. This paper deals with an engineered backfill grouting system which was the first of its type to be used in North America. It discusses the geological conditions encountered, the design criteria used in the evaluation process, and an indepth review of the various system components. It demonstrates how contractors can use knowledgeable and professional industry suppliers to solve difficult construction problems.

This is a question that will be asked many times and by many individuals during the various evaluation stages of any new project. However, the question itself will often have different connotations to the different groups invariably involved in such an exercise. As examples, consider just three of the several different groups involved in the development of a new mining project - Financiers, Consulting Engineers and the Sponsors of the project (potential borrowers). To the Financiers, a 'bankable project' will be one against which they will be prepared to lend funds (but not necessarily all of the funds requested by the Sponsors). This usually means that in the first instance the technical information presented to the bank has satisfactorily covered all of the requisite areas to the levels of accuracy required. More importantly, the financial evaluation of the projected economic performance of the mine, as a whole, is considered sound and a set of arrangements under which the bank is prepared to advance loan funds have been structured which fully satisfy the bank's credit criteria. To Consulting Engineers preparing a feasibility study (or a part thereof), on behalf of the project Sponsors, the term 'bankable' invariably only refers to the technical completeness and the level of detail contained in the report which they are preparing. Their scope of work will not necessarily have been broad enough to fully satisfy a bank's requirements. It is unusual to see any specific references to overall project viability or profitability in Consulting Engineers' feasibility reports, other than those which are automatically associated with the use of the term 'ore'.

The influence of modifications in the molybdenum, vanadium and, to a limited degree, carbon and boron content to a basic composition of 5 pct Cr, 0.75 pct Mo, 1 pct V hot-work tool steel composition, was studied in respect to hardenability, grpain- coarsening temperature, and tempering charactevistics. Tensile, impact, and fatigue pvoperties were studied for the most promising compositions. An alloy with a typical composition of 0.43 pct C, 4.97 pct CI-, 0.33 pct Si, 2.25 pct Mo, and 1.00 pct V uas found to offer the most favorable combination of properties in respect to high-strength applicntions when tempered at 1100°F. MANY 5 pct Cr high-strength steels are at present being manufactured in North America which fit well into the classification of the AISI-SAE system. Much interest has been shown in these materials as ultra-high-strength steels for use at elevated temperatures. The limiting temperature of use lies at the point where the steels begin to soften rapidly. Although a great deal of information has been made available in the past two years on the properties of selected alloys in this series, little information exists on the effect of systematically varying the ccntent of one or more elements in the 5 pct Cr-base alloy. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of variations of the carbon, molybdenum, vanadium, and, to a limited extent, the silicon, manganese, boron, and niobium content of a 5 pct Cr steel to the AISI H-13 base analysis. Possibly a word explaining the phenomenon more in detail may not be amiss. In the act of solidification each drop as it starts to solidify splits up into a half drop poorer in carbon and another half drop richer in carbon than the drop itself. The half drop poorer in carbon solidifies and attaches itself to-the already solid walls, whereas the half drop richer in carbon remains molten for the excellent reason that it is richer and hence is more fusible than the original drop, and hence in turn is wholly fusible at the existing temperature. Under usual conditions, as when the steel solidifies in a mold of any form, the successive molten half drops thus enriched in carbon remain present and by their enrichment progressively raise the carbon con-tent of the remaining molten mass, out of which successive half drops are continuously solidifying and attaching themselves to the already solid walls. IN the search for practical geological problems amenable to solution by the potential methods, the geophysicist is led to study mathematically various theoretical cases. In these idealistic discussions, the media under consideration are generally supposed to be homogeneous and iso-tropic. The geophysicist, of course, realizes perfectly that these condi-tions do not occur in their entirety in reality. However, the assumptions made are justified, because very often they are necessary in order to render possible an exhaustive study of a given problem, which otherwise would be too complicated, and would not lend itself to a complete mathe-matical analysis. Of the above two assumptions, that concerning the homogeneity of a given geological formation is satisfactorily realized except in so far as isotropy is concerned, since this property is not often encountered in practice. As a consequence, it is very desirable for the geophysicist to have quite an extensive knowledge of the properties of anisotropic forma-tions, and of the laws that govern the propagation of electric current therein. With such principles in mind, he will be able to decide whether the conclusions arrived at in simple, isotropic conditions are still correct in more complex cases, or in what way they must be modified or adapted in order to constitute a sound basis for the interpretation of the results obtained in anisotropic media. On the other hand, the fact that in anisotropic formations themobility of the ions is greater along the strike than perpendicular thereto can be utilized for determining the direction of the dip by induc-tion measurements. We therefore propose to study in three successive chapters the following points: 1. Propagation of the electric current in anisotropic media. 2. Some consequences of the anisotropy of geological formations with reference to the surface electrical measurements, and their interpretation. 3. Determination of the direction of the dip of anisotropic formations by surface induction measurements.

The Yindaruqin Irrigation Project is designed to irrigate 57,000 ha of land in the central part of Gansu Province of People's Republic of China. Water for the Project will be diverted through an 87 Km long feeder canal which will convey 36 cubic meters per second from an intake on the Datong River. (Fig. 1) The feeder canal consists of approximately 10 Km of open channels, 75 Km of tunnels and 2 Km of siphons and aqueducts. This is the biggest self-flowing irrigation water control project in the Northwest of China and it is among the most interesting projects in China for the geological and environmental conditions. Nearly half of the investment in the Project is a World Bank Loan and contractors were chosen by means of international bidding. The Italian Company, CMC Ravenna, succeeded in answering the bidding for the construction of tunnels 30A and 38, perhaps the most difficult in the Project, submitting a TBM alternative to the conforming drill and blast contract recommendation.

The ongoing revision of the Respirable Dust Regulations (RDR) by the UK coal mining industry includes the introduction of personal exposure monitoring for underground mines, rather than the fixed point sampling of workplaces. The initial choice CIP10 personal respirable sampler, failed during the underground trials because of the transfer of large non-respirable particles to the respirable dust deposit under vibration from man-riding belts, and of adverse effects of high winds and high dust loading on the flowrate through the sampler. These effects were validated in laboratory simulations of these conditions. A cyclone-based personal sampler is showing promise as an alternative.

As the size of the mills get larger and the liners get heavier, abetter means had to be found to handle liner replacement. McLellan Industries is famous for their innovative ideas andwas called upon by an engineering company to develop a mill liner crane. The first crane was developed for Similkameen about 1969 to serve a 32' Ø X 14' Long SAG Mill. The next was Island Copper in Port Hardy, B.C., the same size as Similkameen in 1970. At that time, we took existing hydraulic cranes and modified them to meet the mill configuration. In 1973, we developed a completely new approach for the Southern Peru copper mine at Tacna, Peru for a Ball Mill, size 16'-6" Ø X 19' Long. Each installation required a design study to meet the change in mill size, trunnion size, elevation of floor to feed trunnion, area at the feed or discharge end of the mill. We have supplied self-propelled units as well as lift in. When there is no room at the feed end and if the mill has a trunnion overflow discharge, we have the mill supplier provide a structural frame to span the sump and move the mill liner handier into position with the use of the overhead crane or a mobile crane.

Introduction Our society is currently experiencing a change in civil philosophy toward US industrialization. We have become increasingly bent on the pursuit of a nirvanic state of zero risk. The money supply has become inversely proportional to its sources. And most mining companies, traditionally conservative, have become increasingly risk conscious. Rising taxes, high inflation, and decades of a steadily decreasing gross national product (GNP) - coincident with moral decay and disarmament - have eroded America's economic health. Psychology of US metal markets has shifted across the economic spectrum to disillusionment and discouragement. The sagging national economy, expanding governmental debt, and a backward mineral policy in concert with worldwide unrest and turmoil have caused great volatility in the metal markets. Congressional inaccessibility of US resources has contributed to its loss in strategic leadership and dependency on foreign suppliers and the common market. Large scale mining activities are now on the decline. And there is an overall slump in mineral exploration in this country. America now faces the sobering reality of almost total importation of 13 key mineral commodities and total dependence on foreign sources for five of them. There is a growing dependency on 21 of the 34 minerals vital to the US economy. And virtually everything needed can be imported directly from third world countries. Almost 85% of the free world's supply or production of vanadium, chromium, platinoids, manganese, and titanium - an essential to the aerospace industry - comes from South Africa. That country now plays a forefront position in supplying the West with minerals. The Soviets have become increasingly aware of this situation. They have made key moves in procuring for their own purposes major raw materials markets, particularly in South Africa. This is obviously threatening to the US' direction and brings about vulnerability to shortages and cutoffs. In spite of these developments and the overall change in the mining industry, there is good opportunity for growth ahead. The way has been paved for the smaller mining companies, particularly the more bullish of these. Smaller mining organizations possess a tight management and strong sense of direction. They can easily adapt to and cope with change. "Windows" that exist in the industry directly depend on a number of factors. These include the busi¬ness climate, market research and planning, management and human resources, applied appropriate technology, favorable hunting ground, and entrepreneurship. Mining as business Mining (and exploration) as a business is by its very nature highly speculative. It involves greater risk for a longer period of time than most other businesses. The entire mineral estate in the US continues to shrink. This is primarily because of various legislated wilderness measures. Consequently, the probability of finding an economic ore deposit in the US has decayed to less than 1%. Although the risk is high, the stakes far outweigh the gamble and are larger than most other businesses can offer. Mining properties, as investments or business opportunities, can provide effective hedges against long-term inflation because the real price for selected commodities, such as gold, may sometimes rise faster than inflation. Recessionary periods seem to provide the best climate for entering the mineral business or for a particular mining organization to expand its activities. Looking ahead and seizing opportunities during a depressed market will pay off. Property payments and royalties are likely to be lower. And the potential for an upward shift in prices for a given commodity is very positive. The decision to invest in a prom-

During the past few years considerable interest has been shown in the study of fiber, and its effect, in wrought metals. Fiber has recently been defined as a "condition of parallelism of important lines or details in the structure."' Briefly stated, two distinct types of fiber are commonly encountered. One results from the alignment in the direction of working of constituents, more or less segregated, such as slag, oxides, carbides and dendritic formations. The second, and least understood, type is produced by working the metal below the recrystallization temperature in such a way as to develop a parallelism of the grains. This condition is readily recognized by the pronounced elongation of the grains in the direction of working. Under certain deformational treatments the grain fragments produced by cold working tend to orient in certain definite directions with respect to the axis of extension. Furthermore, even in metals that have been annealed after cold working preferred orientations may be present. It is perhaps logical to assume that such marked parallelism of structural elements would be manifested by directional properties in the metal. As a matter of fact, tests on many kinds of materials have shown differences in varying degrees. In recognition of this condition, proper design, for many purposes, places the fiber axis in such a way as to present the direction of maximum strength to the greatest applied stress. Earlier Investigations Howe2 has written at considerable length regarding the causes and practical significance of fiber in steel and wrought iron. His studies showed that wrought iron and the puddled steel sheets (materials of plastic origin) were weaker transversely than longitudinally. The transverse deficit ranged from 5 to 29 per cent. Ground support for metal, nonmetal, and coal mines was examined through fill placement with a pneumatic stower to increase extraction, reduce ground pressures, and improve general mine safety. Several pneumatically stowed stope-fill products were tested to determine the effects of specific gravity, gradation, moisture, and impact velocity on the in-place density of the stowed fill. Hydraulic sand filling has now served the mining industry for several decades but because of the low density does not always provide ample support to the hanging wall; therefore, the sill and crown pillars sometimes build up excessive stresses that are detrimental to mining. Cementation of a dense fill adjacent to a pillar to allow 100-pct extraction of the pillar, or a fill that can be placed without the use of water and where water is a detriment to rubber-tired mining equipment, was found to be a possible use of pneumatic fill. Placing of coal mine washery products into abandoned underground workings is another possibility in order to completely eliminate surface impoundments.

THE complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.1 It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to be drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the ?' phase," CuA12." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in ?' lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.' The formation of ?', however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice ?', which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly perfect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.4-8 Particles of ?' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Widmanstätten figure.* The ?' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photograms or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6.7,1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a few hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of "CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. It is possible1 that these aggregates are in fact merely ?' in a high state of dispersion; the inclination to argue this is strong, as we shall see later. Never-

These impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel—especially steel made by the oxidation processes—the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished ar at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of' the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in conlmercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

"In concentrating production energy-consuming power installations are wide used, the most powerful of them are the wet autogenous grinding mill operating in closed circuit with a spiral classifier. The analysis of the current state of the automation of the grinding process shows that the reserves for maximizing productivity and minimizing electricity consumption have not yet been exhausted on the existing process equipment. Usage of the achievements of the modern management theory reveals an opportunity for further optimizing of the grinding process. The purpose of the research is to develop an automated control system of complex ""the mill-classifier"" to conduct the grinding process in the most operating efficiency, ensuring the maximization of productivity and minimization of specific electricity consumption. The main idea of this work is to study the specific features of the ore grinding process and creation on this basis of automated control system complex ""mill-classifier"" which allows to find and to maintain the optimal mode of grinding based on identification of the current object parameters, observance and regulating of the object state coordinates. Research methods. We used the methods of system analysis, mathematical statistics, modern automated control theory, theory of systems identification, optimal control, modelling of dynamic processes. Developed scientific provisions: - identification algorithm of the loading sub-system management object of complex ""mill - classifier"" allowing to obtain the unbiased estimators of its parameters according to the data of normal object exploitation; - observing device, which differs from the classic version of the observer Luenberger with possibility of estimating not only the state coordinates of the control object, but also the low-frequency perturbation component; - automated system stabilizing the active power of the grinding mode on the basis of a states controller with Luenberger observer; - structure of the software and hardware that implements the developed models, algorithms, methods of control, management and optimization in the framework of the automation of grinding."

To develop a magnetic levitation transport system that can reduce the cost and improve safety in transporting coal from the face of underground coal mines to the surface. Background Many conventional mining operations use conveyor belts to transport coal from an underground face to the surface of the mine. The Mag-Lev Transport System design replaces conveyor belts with magnetically levitated coal haulage containers moving through a dedicated pipe¬line. Cost estimates, based on current design data, show the Mag-Lev Transport System would have operating and capital costs that are less than or equal to those of an equivalent-capacity conveyor belt system. The safety hazards associated with conveyor belt systems include exposure to moving parts and pinch points, potential fire hazards due to mechanical friction, and the exposure of miners to respirable dust. These hazards would be eliminated or significantly reduced by this novel technology. Approach The Mag-Lev Transport System uses magnetic levitation technology that allows noncontact, frictionless conveyance of a levitated body within a dedicated transit corridor. The mag-lev technology utilizes two types of permanent magnets coupled with an electronic position control system to achieve noncontact levitation. Levitation is provided by neodymium-iron boron (NdFeB) magnets mounted in the base of the haulage containers and inexpensive ceramic-5 magnets located in the bed of the transit corridor. An electronic position control system is used to overcome the inherent instability of the repelling permanent magnets. Proximity sensors, a signal processing circuit, electromagnetic actuators, and fixed ferrous side rails are the major components of the positioning system.

Recently, Gilvarry1,2 has given a rigorous derivation of the proper distribution function for fragment size in single fracture, based on a closely defined physical model and deduced strictly by the laws of probability. The physical point of departure is Griffith's theory of brittle strength, identifying sub-microscopic flaws as the cause of the low strength of a solid in comparison with values implied by cohesive energies. Gilvarry and Bergstrom,4-7 and Gilvarry8 have compared the predictions of the theory with experiment, and have found excellent agreement, in general. The purpose of this communication is to sketch the extension of the theory to the case of comminution, and to indicate the applications to some examples in nature. The present treatment represents an amplification of a brief discussion appearing elsewhere. 9 Although the basic ideas of the Griffith theory are perfectly general for rupture of brittle solids, it was originally formulated with very brittle materials such as glass in mind. Moreover, Griffith's original experimental work was carried out on glass specimens. Recently, however, the theory has been extended by race" to apply directly to rocks. This extension makes the theory immediately applicable to the materials generally of interest from the standpoint of comminution. GENERAL CASE To obtain the distribution function for fragment size in single fracture, three assumptions are made, that: 1) Fracture proceeds by activation of preex-istent Griffith flaws in the volume, faces, and edges of a fragment; 2) the distributions of flaws of these three types are independent of each other; and 3) activated flaws of a particular type are distributed at random, individually and collectively, in the sense of Fry.11 The last assumption implies that each distribution is separately of Poisson type.

Asimismo se describen los circuitos pertinentes de la planta piloto, como de la planta Paragasha y los resultados metalúrgicos en los meses de enero a marzo en 1965. The type of population encountered in the sampling of coal, ores and other products of natural phenomena is one in which the variance within a cluster of elements generally increases steadily as the size of the cluster increases. To enable estimation of variances of stratified random or systematic sampling for such populations one must model the serial correlation function or alternatively, the variogram function. The author has postulated a specific symmetry of the serial correlation function which leads to expressions with rich theoretical and practical implications. These expressions provide a spatial correlation function which explains power law relationships often observed in studies of dispersion variances. They also enable straightforward calculations of sampling variances. The importance of the role of finite population size in the equations leads one to examine previously held concepts of ælargeÆ and æsmallÆ sample populations. The model based on the symmetry postulate is a fractal model with the serial correlation function of a hypothetically infinite population being of the same form as that developed by Mandelbrot for discrete fractional noise. Techniques used in fractal mathematics apply, including box counting and fitting of a dimension function. The paper establishes a framework for the understanding of this fractal theory and demonstrates how to calculate sampling variances from the model variogram using simulated data fitting the model.

(written discussion ? ).¬Sphalerite, as is well known, occurs not only as a common constituent of many types of ore deposits formed under widely varying geologic conditions, but its sulphide mineral associates comprise a goodly number of species. In the investigation by Mr. Teas, data were obtained from a mineralographic study of about 200 ore specimens from 43 different localities grouped according to their genesis as follows: (1) Contact-metamorphic deposits, (2) deep-vein zone deposits, (3) intermediate-vein zone deposits, (4) shallow-vein zone deposits, (5) meteoric water deposits. .The object of the study was to determine the relations of sphalerite to the associated sulphide minerals and their possible genetic significance. As a result of the investigation, Mr. Teas has deduced several important conclusions. Probably the one of largest interest and value was that sphalerite formed from magmatic waters, including contact-metamorphic, deposits, could be distinguished, for the cases investigated at least, from sphalerite formed from meteoric waters, by development in the former of minute triangular or rectangular dots or stringers of chalcopyrite. Although chalcopyrite inclusions in sphalerite had been noted by previous observers, the probable significance of their apparent general occurrence in sphalerite of certain types of ore deposits and their absence from others was unknown. The large number of ore specimens studied from more than 40 different localities in the United States and foreign countries, representing the principal genetic types of sphalerite-bearing deposits, gives considerable weight to the conclusions reached by the author. Should the conclusion drawn by Mr. Teas become generally applicable, a laboratory criterion of much value will have been established for distinguishing between sphalerite formed from juvenile and that from meteoric waters. The principle seems applicable not only to sulphide deposits in which sphalerite is the principal constituent, but to those in which it occurs as a very subordinate one, as shown by the study of ore specimens from one of the principal pyrite mines in Virginia. It may be possible also that the principle will have important application in differentiating primary from secondary sphalerite occurring in the same deposit formed from magmatic waters, although there have-been comparatively few well-
