Gold continued to dominate mineral production in the group of volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, which comprise the British Commonwealth nation of Fiji. The Fijian mineral sector, however, remained of minor importance in terms of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment to the economy of the country, which was primarily agrarian with sugar as its mainstay. The Vatukoula gold-silver mine on the north side of the main island of Viti Levu remained the largest and most important mining operation, as well as Fiji's only operating metalliferous mine. In October, Western Mining Corp. (Fiji) Ltd. (WMCF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian-registered Western Mining Corp. Holdings Ltd., increased its interest in the Vatukoula joint venture from 10% to 20% by exercising its option with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., also of Australia. The assumption of mine management operations at Vatukoula in 1983, with its attendant influx of additional capital and technological expertise, enabled WMCF to increase both efficiency and output at the mine during 1984. Higher output was obtained owing to an increase in underground ore production, which was partly offset by a reduction in opencut tonnage, as well as to modifications in the recovery circuit. Rate of recovery increased from about 15% to over 82% of the gold contained in the ore and from about 40% to 45% of the contained silver.

THE technological study of the treatment of gold and silver ores has been largely responsible for the phenomenal strides which have marked the progress in this branch of metallurgy during recent years. In no other application of science to industry is system more imperative at every stage; correct formulation of result is only second in importance to efficiency of operation. Progresss in method has been largely the result of individual initiative, aided by the work of technical journals and metallurgical societies. There still remains a field for profitable discussion, and it is my intention to deal with some inconsistencies of expression common to a number of writers on the subject; and also to draw attention to the false impressions created by a statement which may, possibly, be only unintentionally misleading. I also take the opportunity of tracing the source of both metallurgical and economic result; and to question the desirability of the methods usually employed in arriving at a final statement. In the first place, I wish to deal with the question of extraction. This term may mean anything or nothing, and it is often used to mislead. In a report of a mining engineer as to the result of operations subsequent to the remodeling of a treatment plant prominence was given to the statement that the extraction had amounted to 91 per cent. On examination it was found that only a small percentage of the so-called extraction was calculated on actual bullion return, a proportion being figured from the gold left in the zinc boxes, and not recovered. In addition to this, a proportion of the extraction was said to be due to gold in concentrate. As there was no concentrating apparatus on the property and as concentration did not form a part of the scheme of treatment the matter was investigated, with the result that the concentrate, of lower gold content that the original ore, was found to be the result of an inefficient pumping system which failed to provide for the whole of the battery product delivered to it. The balance was stacked and, although itself of no marketable value, the gold content was allowed to form a basis of extraction figures.

Addition of lime, especially when treating a hematite feed, sometimes results in swelling and a severe loss in strength during reduction in the temperature range 900° to 1100°C and in grain disintegration in the temperature range 400° to 600°C in a weakly reducing atmosphere. Swelling and/or grain disintegration of pellets is often the reason for trouble in blast furnace operation, resulting in a decrease in the rate of smelting. Following a brief description of the test procedures employed (measurements of swelling, pressure-reduction-softening and grain disintegration), some results are given which were arrived at when testing pellets from industrial plants. Results of systematic tests are presented, where the effect of the quantity and quality of the gangue upon the behavior during reduction of pellets is illustrated. Varying amounts of quartz and limestone were added to a high-grade hematite ore and, then, pellets produced in a pot grate. The relationships of the behavior of the fired pellets during reduction are presented, among others, in the ternary system CaO-FeOn-SiOP. Finally, an attempt is made to explain the reasons for swelling, loss in strength, and grain disintegration.

The excavation of sandstone of generally medium strength for the Liverpool Link Line by Dosco Mark 2A Roadheaders has demonstrated the versatility and good performance of road- headers in suitable rock formations. A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

The relevance of ore-dressing mineralogical investigations to developing and improving metallurgical flow-sheets is discussed and examples are given of the application of such studies to various types of ores and mill products (Au, Cu-Sn, Ni and Sn). The mineralogical investigations described illustrate (a) assessment of the feasibility of ore pre-concentration by heavy-media cyclone separation, (b) evaluation of the potential applicability of various metallurgical treatment processes to an ore, and (c) characterization of mill products to assess circuit efficiency and to guide circuit modifications.

Challenges and requirements specific to heap leach systems will be addressed and analyzed. A detailed description will be given of the mobile heap leach conveying and stacking systems used in the building of heaps for on-and off-pad operations.

A. G. Crocker and M. Bevis (Battersea College of Technology)— Richman and Richman and conard17 have recently published the very interesting results of their studies on the plastic deformation of Fe-Ni-C martensites and of an Fe-5 wt pct Be alloy. Other work on the range of Fe-Be alloys containing between 16 and 27 at. pct Be has also been reported by Richman." One of the fascinating features of this work is that the materials investigated deform primarily by means of twinning and that several twinning modes are operative in addition to the well-established (112 ) mode of bcc materials The composition planes of these unusual twins were determined using a single-surface analysis and reported as (0131, "{045)" or "{089)", and It is now thought1' that the "{0,1,13)" habit reported for the Fe-Ni-C alloys'' is more likely to be near "{127)". Although the full twinning elements of these unusual twinning modes could not be determined directly from the experimental results, the authors attempt to deduce the elements by considering twin intersectionslQ and by using the projection technique of Jaswon and Dove. The basic assumption of their approach is that the (013) habits are truly rational planes but that the other habits are irrational and merely approximated to by the indices quoted above. They thus deduce that the twinning mode describing the (013) habit is either Type I or compound and that the modes describing the other habits are Type 11. This deduction must however be false as all twinning modes in cubic structures obeying the classical orientation relationships of deformation twinning must be compound. Type-I and Type-I1 modes can occur in all of the other crystal systems (indeed in the triclinic system compound modes are not allowed), but in the cubic system only compound modes can arise. This fact, which does not appear to be well-known, fol- lows immediately from the relations between the four twinning elements defining a twinning mode. Thus for a Type-I mode which is uniquely defined by the rational twinning elements K1 = hi and given by: where the summation convention of the tensor calculus has been adopted. For cubic materials the metrics and reduce to the unit tensors and j so that we have It is clear from these equations that both ki and ui must take on integral values; i.e., Kz, and ql must be rational, if hi and vi are integers, i.e., if K1 and are rational. Zinc diffusion into GaAs from the vapor phase through reactively sputtered SiO, films Izas been inrestigated for various zinc pressures at 1000"C. Diffusions were carried out in evacuated quartz ampules with elemental zinc and with various Zn-Ga alloys. Sputtered films have proved effective in lowering surface concentrations and preventing surface deterioration during diffusion. Approxin.ate complenzentary error-function impurity distributions were found when surface concentrations were reduced to approximately 3 -—4 x 10" atoms cm'3 or less with dilute zinc sources or by diffusion through SiO, films. Zinc difhsions in GaAs tlzrough SiO, films produced more planar diffusion fronts than were observed with uncoated zuafers under identical conditions. A) Surface Deterioration During Diffusion. Device technolorn-- in compound semiconductors has been hampered by several difficult problems not normally encountered with silicon and germanium. 111-V and 11-VI compound semiconductors generally have volatile constituents at temperatures used for diffusion. To achieve specific junction depths in reasonable lengths of time, or to obtain particular impurity distributions and doping levels, it is often necessary to use temperatures which cause surface deterioration and erosion of the wafer. The resultant surfaces are generally unsuitable for devices. The type and extent of surface damage depends to varying degrees on the particular environment of diffusion and on the particular impurity in question. The most common type of deterioration results from simple dissociation of the gallium and the arsenic during diffusin.' The deterioration process is significantly enhanced by thermal gradients in the diffusion zone, usually resulting in vapor transport and condensation at the cooler portion of the system. The resulting damage sometimes appears as a general haziness over the surface or an array of pyramidal etch pits characteristic of the particular orientation. Occasionally, erosion of the surface occurs uniformly over the wafer so that surface loss is not readily apparent. Workers in GaAs usually resort to the sealed-ampule type of diffusion system3"5 rather than the more conventional open system used for silicon and germanium. Another type of deterioration results from direct interaction of the impurity with the surface. The form of deterioration may vary from surface alloying, as in the case of zinc, to direct chemical attack and vapor transport of the reaction products, as in the case of sulfur. Surface alloying with zinc occurs at higher temperatures and source vapor pressures.4 The process is largely controlled by the amount of free gallium on the surface of the wafer in equilibrium with the arsenic lost to the system. The group-VI elements, sulfur, selenium, and tellurium, are commonly used donor impurities for gallium arsenide. These elements are characterized by high vapor pressures and high chemical

"Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres.The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 19505 and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. In recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors. There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."

"Navarro is the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it collects about 1.600 tons of waste daily. The environment surrounding Navarro is highly contaminated and the pollutants released by the dump threaten human health in the adjoining neighborhoods. The goal of our project is to identify major pollutants released from the dump and their distribution in the surrounding ecosystem. In a first phase of the sampling and analysis program landfill leachate was collected and screened for heavy metals and for the most common persistent organic pollutants. This allowed us to identify the most relevant compounds on which we focused in a more detailed second phase investigation. These compounds were quantified in the vicinity of the landfill (groundwater, surface water, drinking water and soil) to get information on their mobility and possible pathways into the human body.IntroductionThe usual technique of waste disposal in most developing countries is by landfilling on not -, or not well controlled sites, where people live close by or even on the waste itself. A typical example for this practice is Navarro, the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it now consists of about 23 million tons of household and industrial waste. The dump is located on a wetland in the riverbed of the Cauca River, the main drinking water source for Cali. Two ponds of unknown permeability located next to the landfill collect a fraction of the waste leachate. During the rainy season, the ponds frequently overflow and drain into the soil (alluvial, loamy sediments) of surrounding sugar cane fields. The environment of Navarro is assumed to be highly polluted and there is evidence that it affects the health of nearby inhabitants. Specifically, the incidence of respiratory diseases was higher among vulnerable individuals (<3 and >50 years old) living in a <3 km perimeter of Navarro as compared with a control group (Solano et al., 2006). Further, a clustering of extremely rare congenital malformations (sirenomelias and cyclops) was observed in a small area during a short time period (<6 months) (Filigrana et al., 2008)."

Based on the Kirkendall frame of reference, a method is proposed for the determination of atomic mobilities of all the diffusing species in a multicorn-ponent system with a single diffusion couple. The method is based on an atomic mobility model developed on the concept of negligible interactions among the intrinsic fluxes. It is shown in the model that mobilities can be obtained directly from the cumulative intrinsic fluxes past the Kirkendall interface. The proposed method replaces the need for a prior determination of interdiffusion coefficients far the calculation of mobilities. Relations between intrinsic diffusion coefficients and mobilities are derived and the mobility calculations are illustrated with diffusion data in Cu-Zn-Mn alloys at 850°C. ThE concept of "intrinsic flux" with respect to a fixed lattice was introduced "i Darken1 to explain toa Kirkendall effect2 demonstrated by the motion of inert markers during isothermal diffusion in single-phase binary solid solutions. Based on this concept, intrinsic diffusion studies have been made in various binary metallic systems3,4 employing such a lattice frame of reference, commonly referred to as the Kirkendall interface. Similar approaches, both theoretical and experimental, have been presented5"10 to study intrinsic diffusion in multicomponent systems. Based on the direct integration of Fick&apos;s law extended to multicomponent diffusion, Philibert and Guy8 proposed a method for the determination of intrinsic diffusion coefficients. For an n-component system, this procedure requires an experimental study with (n — 1) diffusion couples, all having their Kirkendall interfaces at the same compositio;, where n(n — 1) intrinsic diffusion coefficients are defined. This technique has been employed for ternary diffusion studies by Dayananda and Grace" and Guy and Leroy.11 A different approach is recommended by Ziebold and Cooper,12 who have derived relations between interdiffusion coefficients and atomic mobilities employing fluxes referred to the local center of volume. Their analysis is based on the simplifying assumption of negligible interactions among intrinsic fluxes. This assumption has been considered satisfactory for dilute solutions.5"7 The use of this analysis for the calculation of mobilities requires an initial determination of interdiffusion coefficients with a set of diffusion couples having intersecting diffusion paths. It is the purpose of this paper to propose a method that would permit a direct determination of mobilities of all components of a multicomponent system from a single diffusion couple. This method is based on a mo- bility model developed with diffusion fluxes referred directly to the Kirkendall interface, generally identified by inert markers. gen erall, like that of Ziebold and Cooper,12 employs the simplifying assumption that the flux of each component relative to a fixed lattice is caused only by the driving force of its own chemical potential gradient. THE KIRKENDALL INTERFACE Inert markers are employed in diffusion couples to locate experimentally the position of the Kirkendall interface. They are initially placed at the weld interface for "sandwich" couples, or at the original vapor-solid interface for vapor-solid couples. Studies of marker motion in binary systems3&apos;4 with both types of couples indicate that markers remain in a plane of constant composition and move with this plane para-bolically with time. Parabolic marker movements were also observed in ternary Cu-Zn-Mn couples by Dayananda and Grace.10 It is reasonable to expect a similar marker behavior even for diffusion couples with a higher number of components.

An operational 9 meter (30-foot) high gold heap leach pile was investigated by excavating test pits up to 6 meters (20 feet) deep, obtaining bulk and relatively undisturbed thin wall drive samples, and observing the ore distribution patterns exposed in the test pit walls. The clayey ore is crushed, agglomerated with lime and cement, and deposited on the leach pads using a radial stacker. Laboratory tests performed included moisture-density, gradation, compaction, Atterberg limits, permeability (constant and falling head), and triaxial strength tests. Discussion is presented on the effects of agglomeration on the permeability and strength characteristics of the in-place ore. Also discussed is the effect of deposition of the ore using the radial stacker.

Mining geology has a threefold objective: to guide prospecting for new ore, to evaluate known orebodies as development risks, and to supply the detailed knowledge of ore structures necessary for more economical extraction. The role of geology in exploration is well established. This article will deal solely with orebody evaluation and the application of geology to development and mining problems as practiced by St. Joseph Lead Co. in the southeast Missouri district, which for many years has supplied approximately 30 pct of U. S. lead production. The primary concern of the present discussion is geology in the district, not geology of the district. The southeast Missouri district, locally called the Lead Belt, includes parts of St. Francois, Madison, and Washington counties. The first recorded mining was about 1720 at Mine La Motte in Madison County on surface showings of lead ore. Later discoveries near Bonne Terre, twenty-five miles to the north, led to extensive prospecting and underground mining. To date the district has yielded well over 8 million tons of pig lead, valued at more than $1 billion. By far the greater part of the lead production has come from an area of 50 sq miles, centering Fig. 1-Central portion of southeast Missouri on the city of Flat River, as shown in Fig. 1.

Milling operations throughout the world have created vast amounts of waste by-products, or tailings, which are often disposed on the land surface. The wastes may be disposed behind dams, on untreated ground, or on compacted clay or synthetic liners of impoundments and trenches. Often one of the principle concerns of environmental regulatory agencies is whether seepage from the waste pile could move through the vadose zone to the water table and possibly contaminate an aquifer. The seepage may be generated by the drainage of liquids initially deposited along with the tailings or by infiltrating meteoric water which leaches solutes from the tailings. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the commonly held assumptions regarding storage of seepage wastes in the unsaturated zone. The significance of recent studies of water movement in dry climates which pertain to tailings site selection will be presented. The paper is relevant not only to seepage from impoundments at mill sites, but to many other fluid waste impoundments as well in part this article reinforces earlier work by Stephens and Siegel (1980) and an excellent review paper by McWhorter (1985). The present report addresses considerations in porous media; for a discussion of the effects of fractures and anisotropy in the unsaturated-zone, refer to the paper by McWhorter (1985).

The work of J. E. Johnson, Jr., on the effect of small amounts of oxygen in cast iron in increasing its strength and resistance to shock, is of interest from the technical and scientific standpoints. The following exposition of the theory carries Mr. Johnson&apos;s explanation further and, in my opinion, will disclose certain related phenomena and perhaps shed further light on the subject. Some facts, so novel in character as to excite incredulity, have been accepted finally by many metallurgical authorities. One of these is that oxygen to the amount of 0.060 per cent. in cast iron gives it a breaking strength of 3,500 Ib. per square inch, compared with a breaking strength of 2,500 lb. per square inch in cast iron of the same composition with respect to elements other than oxygen, but having only 0.010 per cent, oxygen. The "oxygenated" cast iron, even if made in a coke furnace, has properties equivalent to the best charcoal pig iron. Mr. Johnson has also established the fact that the variations in combined carbon cannot account for the results. By microphotographic evidence he has shown that in oxygenated cast iron the graphite particles are dense and spherical, while in well-deoxidized cast iron the graphite particles are flaky and leaf-like. It is just a matter of common sense that iron of the latter structure is much weaker than the former. The analytical and microscopical work has been done with care and there is no doubt in my mind about the accuracy of the experimental results. In this paper then, we shall consider it as accepted that small amounts (0.060 per cent.) of oxygen increase the strength of cast iron by producing a structure in which the round and solid particles of graphite are surrounded firmly by a principal matrix of ferrite. The purpose of this paper is to show that the reason why the graphite particles are round is founded on the fact that the particles of any precipitate are made denser and harder by the presence of a reagent having a solvent action on the precipitate. This can be stated as a law, although I have never seen it so given in any textbook. Let us then, for purposes of illustration, give a concrete example and develop the theory of such mechanical and chemical actions as occur: It is well known that, by a soluble sulphate, a barium salt in solution is precipitated in a dense and easily filtered body when the solution is

"This paper describes the results of full-scale testing of several multi-layered wood crib configurations that were tested in the Bureau of Mines mine roof simulator in cooperation with the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory and Cape Breton Development Corporation of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Nine different crib configurations currently being used as wood packwall supports for advancing longwall applications in Canada were evaluated. Configuration parameters understudy included the aspect ratio (height-to-width relationship) and percentage of solid material used in the crib construction. Test results and generalized wood crib behaviour are discussed in detail. Recommendations are made concerning crib constructions to maximize strength and stability. A cost benefit analysis of multi-layered wood crib configurations is made. A comparison of laboratory results and underground observations of several wood packwall supports in the Sydney coalfield suggest in situ load capacity is less than that measured in laboratory testing. Reasons for the apparent decrease of in situ load bearing capability are described.IntroductionA cooperative effort was undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL) to evaluate the behaviour of gateside packing materials used in advancing longwall mining applications in the Sydney coalfield. As part of this effort, full-scale tests were conducted on wood packwall supports in the Bureau&apos;s 3-million pound (13.3 MN) active load frame.Nine different pack configurations were evaluated as part of this study. The wood packwall supports were multi-layered crib constructions from 6 in. (0.15 m) by 6 in. (0.15 m) cross section timbers using timber s 30 in. (0.75 m) and 60 in. (1.5 m) in length . I was very glad to see an article on alkali-silica reactivity of concrete aggregate in Mining Engineering. It is a topic that should be reexamined every 45 or 50 years. The last paper (that I am aware of) that examined this topic in Mining Engineering was Rexford (1950), who, at the time, was chief of the Petrography Section, South Pacific Division Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles, CA. The paper was presented at the AIME meeting in Los Angeles in October 1948. Professor Leming&apos;s discussion generally reflects the current state-of-the-art; but it provides no references for more detailed information. I wrote a paper titled "How to avoid excessive expansion of concrete due to alkali-aggregate reaction," which was included in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Hydroelectric Plants and Dams (Mather, 1995). In it, I emphasized that it was the hydroxide ion (not the alkali ion) that caused the pore fluid in the concrete to dissolve reactive silica, producing alkali-silica gel capable of taking up water, thereby, causing swelling and rupturing of the concrete. Excessive expansion will not occur unless there is a sufficient amount of potentially expansive alkali-silica reaction product and water. However, this will not occur unless there is a sufficient quantity of reactive aggregate and unless there is a mechanism by which the pH of the pore fluid can get well above the normal value of about 12.6. In many cases it is sufficient that the cementitious medium not only contains portland cement but also contains ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) or a pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, volcanic glass or calcined shale - any of which may have been included for economic reasons. If, however, the person selecting the ingredients for concrete knows that the aggregate is reactive (with no alternate nonreactive aggregate available) and if the person knows that the only available portland cement has a high alkali content (i.e., more than 0.6% Na2O.; Na2e = % Na20 + 0.658 x % K20), then it becomes irresponsible not to establish what reasonable precaution one should take. Professor Leming suggests using one of the following: 30% Class F fly ash, 50% GGBFS or 7% to 10% silica fume. My view is that one should prepare test specimens with the cement and aggregate to be used and then expose these both with and without at least two dosages of each of the various alternative materials (slag, pozzolan and lithium salts), so that the required dosage. to control the expansion is established. Then, economic considerations can dictate the final selection. I would point out to the author that GGBFS is not a pozzolan and is not an admixture, but, rather, it is a latent hydraulic cement. An admixture is, by definition, a material other than hydraulic cement. I commend him for suggesting that aggregate producers should become more active in knowing about the reactivity of their products and the precautions needed to permit those products to be safely used in concrete.

In densely populated cities such as Hong Kong, where unoccupied space is becoming more valuable as the population grows, city planners are more often looking to underground space to meet the increasing need for transportation and services. Given the dense population of people, amenities and high-rise buildings above or near such underground space, it is essential to minimise any disturbance and potential damage during construction. Hence, the excavation of hard rock to develop such underground space can be highly restricted, expensive and time consuming. This is the case for many of the tunnels currently being excavated by drill and blast directly underneath Hong Kong’s busiest business districts and most popular residential areas.
