The ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst. Impurities in raw material are often a source of annoyance, especially when their detection involves delay and costly analytical work. Whethcr low conductivity in copper is due to arsenic, nickel, or something else may be cluickly found out. Residual traces of boron, magnesium, manganese, silicon, vanadium, and other deoxidizing agents are easily identified where wet analysis may fail to reveal their presence, even after days of effort. The use of these modelling tech- niques is suggested as an aid to magnetic interpretation and field examples are included from Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

The effects of nitrogen alloying on the corrosion properties of austenitic stainless steels were investigated by a combination of potentio-dynamic and surface analysis techniques. The results indicate that nitrogen undergoes the phenomenon of anodic segregation, affecting both general and localized corrosion resistance. Nitrogen alloying is found to be beneficial to general corrosion resistance in a de-aerated sulphuric acid solution, but to be detrimental in an aerated solution of sulphuric acid This phenomenon is explained in terms of an ammonium-ion polarization effect. Localized corrosion resistance is found to improve dramatically as a result of nitrogen alloying, the nitrogen improving the formation, maintenance, and stability of the passive film in environments that promote pitting various theories that have been proposed to account for these phenomena are discussed.

Efficient methods for the removal of copper from heap-leach solutions without mobile organic phases are a current mining industry need. To satisfy this need, a selective, high-capacity, durable solid material is required. The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) developed a set of materials based on current solvent-extraction chelates that provide selective copper concentration in the presence of high concentrations of iron. In contrast to conventional solvent extractions, the author's strategy anchors the chelators to a nonpolymeric solid substrate through the use of a custom-designed linker molecule. The fundamental synthetic routes to these materials have already been established, and attachment to the solid surfaces have been achieved in an efficient manner. The author's continuing research is focused on the optimization of the synthetic pathways to these solid materials and the evaluation of their copper-capturing capabilities.

A powerful, interactive metallurgical process simulator for use on micro- computers has been developed in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. MICROSIM presently allows simulation of all ore-dressing flowsheets and a selection of hydrometallurgical unit operations, and is extendable to all such processes. MICROSIM is written in Pascal. This modern language provides very versatile data structures which can be effectively used to solve the major problem in generalised simulation programs, namely storage and transmission of data relating to liquid and solid phases. Dynamic memory allocation allows optimal utilisation of computer storage space. The simulator utilises very efficient precalculation algorithms that determine the tear streams for optimal sequential modulator calculation convergence. Microcomputer graphics simplifies flowsheet specification, and form-filling data capture with supplied default values eliminate most common input errors.

During the past few years frequent reference has been made to a certain type of iron known generally as "bad iron," "dirty iron," etc., both by steelmakers and producers of iron castings.' Open-hearth operators have claimed that such iron was entirely within the specified limits as to ordinary analysis but it was difficult to make good steel from it. It has been suggested that unreduced material in the iron is responsible, also that most trouble is experienced with the iron when the blast furnace is delivering a product whose analysis is more or less variable. Other reasons suggested are the use of scrap or borings, unsintered flue dust in the burden, a cold hearth, too high a proportion of unsuitable grade of ore, or the form of the carbon in the iron. Accordingly, a subcommittee was appoint at the fall meeting of the Open-hearth Committee of the Americ m Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers held in Pittsburgh in October, 1926, to investigate the reasons for the occurrence of this bad iron and suggest methods for preventing its appearance. This committee enlisted the cooperation of the U. S. Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at Pittsburgh in undertaking a study of pig-iron quality as affecting the open hearth. This marks the 100th year that the aggregate industry has been served by a national association. Of all the accomplishments this longstanding relationship has achieved, there is probably none greater than the progress made, in worker safety. Perhaps the best way to measure this success is to examine injury trends in the aggregate miner population. For example, in the first half of the 20th [ ] century, 16 quarry mining disasters (a "disaster" is an incident with five or more fatalities) claimed 157 miners between 1909 and 1952. The largest of these was the disaster at the Sandts Eddy Limestone Quarry near Allentown, Pa., on March 26, 1942, where 31 miners died of asphyxiation by fumes/explosion. Thankfully, no mining disasters have occurred in the aggregate industry since 1952. It is these kinds of information that help us characterize improvements in aggregate worker safety over the last 100 years.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. The resistance which rock bolts offer to shear movements along fracture planes and bedding planes near a mine opening has been suggested as one of the mechanisms by which bolts contribute to the support of weak rock in the roof or sidewall. That such displacements do occur is a fact fairly well known. Inspections of drill holes that have been drilled for some time often reveal that the holes have been offset at one or more points some time after drilling. Resin grouted bolts are often cited as being better able to resist shear movement in the roof because the annulus around the steel bar is filled with grout, whereas the sides of a conventional bolt will not contact the rock until a rather large shear displacement has occurred. When this project began, there were no experimental data to support or refute the above arguments. A laboratory shear test program was, therefore, devised to evaluate the effectiveness of various types of bolts in resisting shear under various conditions which exist in situ. Research reported earlier (Haas, 1976) included a theoretical analysis of a conventional bolt intersecting a shear surface, and experimental data on the shear resistance of smooth (lapped) shear surfaces, intersected at various angles by conventional and resin grouted bolts. The present paper extends the previous analysis to consider the effect of the initial roughness of the shear surface. Joint roughness is a particularly significant factor since undulations of the shear surface cause dilatation of the joint, which in turn, causes high tensile loading of a bolt intersecting the joint.

"The effectiveness of reagent adsorption onto hematite ore particle surfaces is critical during beneficiation to promote effective selective flocculation and dispersion and increase iron oxide recovery. The relationship between aqueous calcium in the process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants has never before been studied. The nature of common dispersants was studied in the presence and absence of calcium in the process water. The settling behavior of hematite-rich iron ore at pH 11 was assessed in the presence of calcium and inorganic dispersants: sodium silicate, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and organic dispersant ethylenediamenetetraacetic acid (EDTA). It was found that inorganic dispersants are ineffective at a pH of 11 without activating the surface sites of the ore particles with calcium. Organic dispersants, however, were found to be effective with and without surface site activation.IntroductionThe United States produced 54 million metric tons of concentrated iron ore in 2011 (Jorgenson, 2013). Over 8 Mt were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (CCI, 2011). The grade of this ore is slowly depleting, making it imperative that processing efficiency improves. To increase processing efficiency, a complete understanding of the effects of chemical reagents in the process must be acquired. This process relies heavily on dispersants to disperse iron oxides from gangue minerals in settling processes. The mechanism that these dispersants use to disperse the ore and its relationship to calcium in the process water has never been studied. The following extended abstract summarizes the relationship between aqueous calcium in process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants at dispersing hydrated hematite ore. These tests were carried out at a pH of 11, as this is a typical pH used to ensure dispersion in selective flocculation and dispersion processes."

The techniques of particle-size measurement are of particular importance in the manufacture of portland cement. A range of sizes, from a close approximation to Fred C. Bond's "theoretical infinite" (represented by raw material in the quarry) to particles smaller than one micron is represented in the process. Moreover, similar size-reduction operations are performed on both natural and synthetic materials, the former relatively inactive in water and the latter quite reactive. This means that aqueous sedimentation systems for particle-size analysis are applicable only to some of the materials involved in the process. A brief review of the process should be useful to place the measurement techniques described here in perspective. (Fig.l) Raw materials are quarried, crushed and transported to storage at a maximum size usually of a few inches. Typical materials are limestone and clay or shale, with small amounts of other materials used to adjust the plant mix to the concentration of lime, silica, alumina and iron oxide required.

"Until now FDM-Techniques have been widely used for Modeling Solidification Processes in Castings. Often a rigid, regular type of enmeshment (cubes, , --) have been used. This has the advantage of low CPU-costs, but the disadvantage of a zig-zag presentation of the interface between the casting and the mold. The last point is the reason why FEM-Techniques, giving the possibility of a true presentation of the shape in the enmeshment, are increasingly used. The disadvantage is the high CPU-costs. In this paper, a technique is presented, which uses the FDM-Mesh with the zig-zag presentation of shape and ADI-Algorithms to calculate temperatures and gradients. The new idea is that the calculated parameters are not presented related to the mesh in which they are calculated, but displayed using the true shape of the casting. Such an advantage of both low CPU-costs and shape correct presentation of the calculated results are achieved. IntroductionThe main reason for using a regular type of enmeshment is that it gives the possibility, via ADI-Algorithms, of obtaining a very fast FDM-Technique. The technique presented by P.R. Sahm and P. N. Hansen (1984), and also used by E. Flender (1985), is numerically so stable that average time steps, at least 200 times larger than the limit given by the explicit FDM-Technique, can be applied. To obtain reasonably good results, average time steps in the range of 20 to 50 times the explicit limit seems to be applicable. It should be pointed out,however, that FDM-Techniques can be used on arbitrary nets, the disadvantages being the same as for the FEM-Techniques. This has, among others, been discussed by P.R. Sahm and P.N. Hansen (1984)."

The minerals industry contributes to the economic growth, prosperity and quality of life of nations, particularly in areas where there might be limited opportunities for employment in other sectors. However, notwithstanding their economic importance, the minerals extraction and processing industries are considered to have significant impacts on the surrounding environment. In recent years many mines have implemented modern monitoring technology and modelling of the monitored environmental parameters to provide scientifically proven indicators about the state of the environment. The flexibility required by the minerals industry to respond dynamically to a changing natural, social and economic environment has become a major consideration. Whilst the notion of continuous improvement is embodied within most environmental management systems, what is now required is a structured audit trail which tracks the flow of resources through the production process to the ultimate environmental impact associated with their consumption, transformation and disposal. Imperial College is coordinating an EC funded project, which is developing a methodology to minimise the ?full life-cycle? impact of metalliferous mining projects, adopting an integrated approach to production and process design, and the costs involved. In order to develop a life cycle assessment (LCA) system that will incorporate different types of data related to the minerals extraction operations, a data inventory was designed and coded in an object-relational database model. The calculation procedures accounting for the input/output balance of the alternative scenarios for mining production, processing, waste disposal, monitoring, and their financial implications are being programmed into a software system. This paper presents the rational and innovative aspects of this work. The methodology developed for the life cycle database is illustrated for the mining production and gaseous emissions components of the system.

Fourteen reagents that are potentially capable of chelating with a metal ion on the surface of the major copper sulfide minerals and pyrite were evaluated for their effectiveness in floating these sulfides. The reagents studied fall into the classes of mercaptobenzole mutations, thiouronium, thionocarbamates, thiourea, imidazole mutations, oximes, hydroxyquinoline and xanthogen formate. The best overall copper sulfide collector was an imidazoline (1-Hydoxyethyl - 2-Heptadecenyl), but it also proved to be an excellent collector for pyrite. Its potency as a pyrite collector can be reduced by structural alteration, but at some loss in its collecting power for the copper sulfides. The effectiveness of many of these potential collectors can be changed by minor alterations to the collector molecule and, to a lesser extent, by pH adjustment. The general order of mineral floatability with these reagents is chalcopyrite = chalcocite > covellite =bornite >> pyrite. The flotation of malachite is generally similar to that of the copper sulfides, indicating the special effectiveness of copper in the crystal lattice for collector attachment.

THE Oklahoma legislature recently passed a bill providing for "the creation of an oil and gas department under the jurisdiction of the Corporation Commission, authorizing the. Corporation Commission to appoint a chief oil and gas conservation agent, and conferring exclusive jurisdiction on the Corporation Commission in reference to the conservation of oil and gas, and the inspection of gasoline and oil, the product of crude petroleum, and repealing all acts or parts of acts in conflict therewith and declaring an emergency." Some of the functions of the new bureau include the receiving and filing of all well logs and the direction and supervision of plugging all abandoned oil and gas wells under rules prescribed by the Corporation Commission. The two leading petroleum-producing States of the country, Oklahoma and California, have now established oil and gas bureaus with a staff of inspectors to see that the important rules relating to the conservation of oil and gas are thoroughly enforced. The economic significance and the value of well logs in the conservation work has been recognized and the necessary legal action taken to insure and procure them. William B. Heroy, of the Government Land Classification Board, in a personal communication to the writer, says that the drilling of wells is also regulated by public authority in the Roswell artesian basin in southeastern New Mexico, where a permit must be obtained for the drilling of any well and a certified log of the well recorded with a county official. The method is said to give fairly satisfactory results. In a recent article 1 a National instead of a State Bureau was suggested for collecting and filing well logs. In discussing the paper, L. L. Hutchison characterized such a plan as impractical because the average driller or contractor will often juggle or guess at the log and will not keep the record sufficiently close or accurate, making it necessary to maintain a special man at each well for the sole purpose of obtaining

A coal preparation plant built with conventional materials only might be able to do an efficient job of preparing coal, but its maintenance costs would be high and emergency shutdowns frequent. To remedy this situation special materials are being used, either in original plant construction or for replacement of conventional materials. The special materials vary from high-strength and abrasion-resisting steels and stainless steel alloys to ceramics. They include hard surfacing welding rods, rubber refractories and some of the newer plastics, the merits of which are cited by the author. A coal preparation plant, limited strictly to the use of conventional materials-for example, mild steel, cast iron and ordinary rubber-could, no doubt, do an efficient job of preparing coal, but the high cost of maintenance and increasingly frequent emergency outages would soon force the operator to seek relief by introducing special materials such as alloyed steels, oil-resistant rubbers and hard-surfacing welding rods.

El método de minado es un componente importante de la estimaciòn de reservas, y el beneficio del proyecto está condicionado a la habilidad de minar selectivamente. En ese sentido, los métodos de lixiviación fallan en proveer estimaciones imparciales de mineral recuperable y exponen el proyecto a un riesgo indebido. Por ello, se preveó otro método alternativo como el Condicionamiento Uniforme y las Variables de Servicio donde las estimaciones puedan ser deducidas de un conjunto de simulaciones condicionales, que requieren menos hipòtesis pero consumen más tiempo. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la variación de las reservas recuperables de acuerdo a la selección de método de estimación. La aplicación de tres métodos de estimación no linear- en un depósito de cobre se comparan con asunciones teòricas y las caracterìsticas geológicas del depósito. La performance relativa de cada método es evaluada por comparaciòn de las curvas de tonelaje-ley y contenido metàlico sobre un cut-off lìmite.

This paper presents a summary of results from a questionnaire sent to surface mines in western Canada seeking information on haul road design, construction, and maintenance. There has been a marked increase in the size of the trucks used over the last decade with some mines now using trucks with a payload capacity of 360mt. Consequentially, geometrical elements of haul roads, such as width, have been enlarged to accommodate larger trucks. Most haul roads are constructed on the basis of past experience without use of formal design procedures. With the introduction of larger haul trucks, problems related to rolling resistance, deterioration, and maintenance of the haul roads have become more important. This has lead to adoption of more rigorous design methods for roads at some mines, most notably for the oil sand mines operated by Syncrude Canada Ltd. A summary of the evolution of haul road designs implemented at Syncrude Canada Ltd. is presented.

Over the past 5 years, Bougainville Copper Limited has undertaken a number of major plant expansions to the copper concen- trate production plant at Bougainville in the North Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea. These projects have scheduled three additional ball mills, three new banks of Outokumpu flotation cells, four additional tertiary screens, two additional tertiary crushers, and more recently four high capacity 24.5m dia. tailing thickeners. The value of the five separate projects totalled more than A$100 million. A requirement of commissioning and bringing on line of each of these projects has been to minimise both operational losses and copper concentrate production. The commissioning has been successfully implemented by detailed planning of the commissioning work in conjunction with the plant operation. Planning has been detailed for each man involved on an hourly basis, highlighting the work required on each commissioning task that is to be undertaken and the time expected to achieve activity Completion.
