The mining of coal, phosphate, oil, gas, and sodium on the public lands of the United States has, during a long period of years, been prevented by the failure of Congress to legislate, notwithstanding the fact that each successive Congress has vainly attempted to enact a law. Disagreements among members of Congress, many of which have related to non-essential matters, have prevented the passage of a bill, the failure at the last session having been due to a fillibuster in the Senate against the conference report led by Senator LaFollette of Wisconsin. Seven bills covering this subject have been introduced into the present Congress, four of which are identical in nearly all essential respects and follow either precisely or closely the conference agreement of the last Congress. These bills are too long to permit of review in this column. In general they provide for the leasing of lands or privileges to mine or to recover the various minerals above mentioned under terms and conditions as to the amount of land that may be leased by any one applicant, the diligence with which the work must be prosecuted, the return or royalty demanded, and the term of the lease and extensions thereof.

The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined with underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GmbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceived as a cost-effective procedure to answer questions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gamma probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross-cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 m thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

"Phase equilibria in the ‘Cu2O’-‘Fe2O3’-SiO2 system, the base slag system in copper production, were recently determined. However, the addition of MgO, commonly present in the slag, drastically changes the phase equilibria in this system. The present study focuses on the phase equilibria in the ‘Cu2O’-‘Fe2O3’-MgO-SiO2 system in equilibrium with metallic copper.Recently, an experimental procedure has been developed that resolved a number of experimental difficulties. This procedure has been successfully applied to characterise several complex industrial copper slags. It includes a high-temperature equilibration followed by rapid quenching and electron probe X-ray micro-analysis (EPMA). The methodology was adapted to the present system and used to determine the liquidus at SiO2 saturation and in contact with high-MgO phases in between 1100 and 1250 °C in Cu2Orich slags.The results indicate a maximum solubility of MgO in the system at 1200 °C of 5 wt%. The boundary line between tridymite and spinel lies 3-4 wt% closer to the SiO2 apex for every 2 wt% MgO added. These new data on the high-copper slags are important for optimisation of the direct-to blister"

The quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The variation in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the Iron and Steel Institute.' From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots. General Theory of Segregation The basic cause of segregation lies in the fact that the impurities are less soluble in solid than in liquid iron. The solid that forms from the impure liquid is more nearly pure than the liquid itself. When a flowing oil well is being drilled in with cable tools, it is difficult to determine when an additional streak of pay sand is drilled. By placing a gas meter on the gas-release line from the oil and gas separator, any increase in volume of gas that comes with oil production is recorded. In addition to the better knowledge of sand conditions, these data are a valuable aid in determining the size and depth of shots, plugging off water, and estimating ultimate production. The meter also gives a record of operation while the well is drilling in; and if allowed to remain on the well after completion will give information that may lead to a more efficient recovery of the oil from the sand. A VERTICAL cross section of any oil sand will show great variation in porosity and oil content. In some sands, the entire thickness contains oil, the variation being only the degree of porosity or oil content, but more often the pay streaks are distinctly separated by shells or barren streaks. These pay strata vary in number and may be thin or thick. The total thickness of the sand may be several tens of feet while the part containing oil may be only 1 or 2 ft. thick. The amount of production is not proportional to the thickness of the sand but rather the thickness of the pay streaks. If the total thickness of the sand or the amount that can be drilled is small, or if the initial production is small, the depth at which each stratum of pay is encountered can be determined sufficiently accurately for all present economic purposes. However, when drilling through sand of considerable thickness, giving large initial production, especially where conditions necessitate that the production go through the same gas trap with that from one or more wells already producing, it is difficult to determine the depth at which the pay strata are encountered even accurately enough to guide the placing of shots, and small pay streaks are apt not to be recognized at all.

Discovered in 1954 and mined since 1966, the X41 copper orebodies have produced over 143 Mt @ 3.3 per cent copper. By June 2002 the production from these orebodies had depleted the Mineral Resource to 36.6 Mt @ 2.8 per cent Cu (including 31.5 Mt @ 2.5 per cent Cu combined 2002 Ore Reserve). Mine production will ramp down to cessation beyond ten years. The 2002 Copper Business Study was commissioned to review the status of the Mount Isa copper business and to optimise the long-term strategy of the operations. The study resulted in a vastly improved geological and geostatistical model, and financial studies led to the optimisation of mine cut-off grades. Utilising these new models, a near-mine target generation workshop was conducted by the copper stream geology team. The workshop focussed on exploration for new ore sources and the extension of existing orebodies to supplement the Mineral Resource inventory for future conversion to Ore Reserves. Several prospective targets were identified and the Conceptual Northern 1100 Drilling program was subsequently designed. This paper shall discuss the practicalities of near-mine target generation in Mount Isa, the issues faced when locating and preparing drill sites in a mature mine environment, and the preliminary results of the drilling program so far.

Improvement of grade and recovery requires the use of optimum processing circuits. Critical to an optimum circuit is the set point for separation. With the introduction of the concept of circuit analysis (Meloy, 1982), it became possible to determine optimum circuits for a given task. No analysis, however, has yet been made as to the grade requirements of the larger circuits. Williams and Meloy (1982), reviewed the literature and concluded that, within the operating range, most unit operations involved in particle separation behave linearly. For the purposes of this analysis, linearity will be assumed. Grade, G, is defined as the weight of the coal mineral, C, that appears in the product, divided by the weight of the coal mineral plus the weight of the gangue mineral or waste mineral, Q, which appear in the product.

In low-temperature diagenetic environments (0 c T c 60 - 80°C), elemental sulfur forms by six common processes: via (1) inorganic oxidation of H2S by molecular oxygen, (2) inorganic oxidation of H2S by ferric iron compounds, (3) polysulfide disproportion- ation; and via the microbial metabolic actions of (4) colorless sulfur bacteria, (5) colored sulfur bacteria, and (6) some types of thiobacilli. Economically viable deposits of native sulfur usually are formed by only one process: inorganic oxidation of H2S by molecular oxygen. The amount of elemental sulfur is also limited by three common processes that destroy it in low- temperature diagenetic environments: bacterial reduction, bacterial oxidation, and inorganic oxidation. In high-temperature diagenetic environments (80 - 10o°C c T c 150 - 200°C), particularly in sour gas reservoirs, there are seven common processes forming elemental sulfur: (1) SOdH2S reaction, (2) H2S- hydrocarbon reaction, (3) polysulfide disproportionation, (4) catalytic H2S decomposition, (5) C02-H2S reaction, (6) chlorinification, and (7) exsolution of physically dissolved elemental sulfur. Natural processes that destroy or remove elemental sulfur in such settings are hydrocarbon sulfurization, polysulfide formation, and advection. In most sour gas reservoirs, relatively small quantities of elemental sulfur occur as a free phase (solid or liquid). However, elemental sulfur often precipitates in copious amounts from the reservoir fluids via exsolution and polysulfide disproportionation during production of sour gas reservoirs. By extension, elemental sulfur may precipitate from reservoir fluids in relatively large quantities upon uplift and erosion of deep sour gas reservoirs, or from advection of sulfurous fluids into shallower settings via faults or other high-permeability pathways.

Sandstone has been prepared for glassmaking purposes, and marketed from the White River Valley in Arkansas at Guion, Izard County, since about 1910—soon after the completion of the White River Branch of the Missouri Pacific R. R. Co. Until 1921, operations were somewhat spasmodic and ended in many failures. In that year a plant was built by the Silica Products Co., Inc., and since that time the operation has been continuous and steady. The land is held under leases, covering about 30 square miles of the best sandstone adjacent to the railroad. Most of the product is shipped to glassmakers. Geology The St. Peter sandstone is rather widely distributed in north central Arkansas and is exposed most prominently in outcrops along the slopes of the White River Valley and its tributarirs that form the division between the Boston Mountains to the south and the Salem Plateau of the Ozarks to the north. It is of Ordovician age and is generally underlaid by Cotter dolomite and capped by Plattin limestone, except in the vicinity of Bellefonte and Everton. At those places, it is a massive cross-bedded, laminated, saccharoidal sandstone; underlying it is the Everton limestone and overlying it, the Joachim magnesium limestone The sandstone at Everton contains numerous phosphatic pebbles and inclusions of sandy limestone. The irregularity of cross-section, the evidence of sorting action and the phosphatic pebbles appear to be indications of secondary deposition The St. Peter sandstone occurs as a massive formation in the picturesque bluffs along the White River Valley from near the eastern escarprnent of the uplift northwestmard into the Ozarks. The exposure shows a series of gentle anticlinal and synclinal folds. The greatest thickness is at the southeastern end, where it is over 100 ft. in many places. It thins out to the north and west and then to isolated and scattered deposits which cap the ridges and mountains of the Ozarks.

Oil development in 1934 has been largely restricted to drilling offset and lease requirement wells. Practically no effort has been made to discover new fields, chiefly because of price structure and proration allowance. A summary of developments during 1934 of necessity is brief. No state agency is maintained for the collection of data. The State Bureau of Mines issues permits for drilling and inspects the plugging of wells in coal-bearing measures only. Therefore data are not in existence with which to compile tables similar to those in other papers of this symposium. Forty-seven counties in the state produce oil, productive depths ranging from 100 to 5300 ft. Approximately 35 different formations in Ohio have produced either oil or gas. These reservoir rocks occur through a stratigraphic interval ranging in age from the shallow Goose Run sand of the Upper Pennsylvanian in Washington County to the St. Peter sand of Lower Ordovician in Seneca County. However, 75 per cent of these formations are unimportant from the standpoint of real production. Most of the oil and gas in Ohio has been produced from the Clinton, Oriskany, Berea and Big Injun sands and the Trenton Lime. Of these, the Clinton is first and Berea second in importance. Fields The oil and gas-producing territory of the state can be grouped into five fields or districts, made up of a series of "pools" usually separated by nonproductive areas, and is in no sense a belt of continuous production. Trenton Field of northwestern Ohio, is scattered through 15 counties. Development began in 1885. This field reached its peak in 1896 with a production of 20,575,138 bbl. for the year. For 1934, production had declined to 990,000 bbl. The oil is classified as Lima grade. The presence of pitchblende in. the silver veins at depth apparently is not expressed as gamma-ray anomalies at the surface.

Safety First is a popular motto—most mining companies have adopted it. It is probable, however, that in the majority of cases it is only a motto and gets no further than the office stationery or the bulletin board at the mine's entrance. In but few industries is there employed a greater diversity of machinery and mechanical devices than in coal mining. The list ranges all the tray from mechanical stokers to wood-working machinery and undercutters. Many of these devices, particularly those employed in wood working, are extremely dangerous. In 1913,23 per cent. of all fatalities occurring in coal mining in the U. S. were caused by machinery of some sort or other. Although the forms of accidents occurring with mining machinery are legion, they generally arise from one or more of five causes: (a) Falls from ladders, platforms, etc.; (b) coming in contact with moving machines or parts thereof; (c) electric shocks; (d) failure of some machine part; (e) mismanipulation of valves, levers, switches or other hand-operated controlling devices. The steps which may be taken to prevent accidents from the above causes are almost as numerous as the accidents themselves. There is, and can be, no panacea for all mishaps, nor for any one class of accidents. There is no mathematical or other formula that will bring immunity under any set of conditions. Common sense is the only guide. The remedy for the first-named class of accidents is simple and generally effective—namely, make the staging, ladder, platform, or other support, abundantly strong to carry any possible weight that it may be called upon to bear; provide ample railings on platforms or runways, and non-slipping feet on movable ladders. Coming in contact with moving machine parts is one of the greatest dangers met with in the operation and maintenance of mining machinery. Unfortunately, machine manufacturers have not as a class adopted the idea of thoroughly protecting and incasing the dangerous parts of their product. No one has, or should have, a better or more thorough knowledge of what the dangerous parts or elements of a machine may be than its builder. "Steel industry has been expanding every year, consequently there has been an increase in waste generation in this area. Thus, companies in this sector are finding it difficult to give a correct destination of waste. For example, only in a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter are generated about l8kg of dust per ton of steel. The aim of this work was the characterization of dust generated in the BOF converter. The characterization was performed by chemical analysis (titration for iron and its oxides and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy for other elements), scanning electron microscopy, size analysis using Mastersizer 2000 equipment and X-ray diffraction. It was observed that dust is composed mainly iron in form of magnetite, metallic iron and wustite with approximately 99% of the particle size below 100 µm.IntroductionToday, steel is a important metal for the world. It can be produced for two routes, blast furnace/ basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter and electric arc furnace (EAF) [1].First route, the iron is produced from the reduction of iron ore and coke for fuel injection and! or natural gas for a production of pig iron in blast furnace. The pig iron is sent until BOF converter to perform the blowing of oxygen to obtain the steel. In the second route, the steel is produced using scraps or direct reduced iron (DR!) using electric arc.During steel production are generated a lot of wastes like slag, sludges, scraps and dust [2]. Only in the first six months of201O, world steel production totaled 706 million tons [3]. According to Watson and Wang [4], some 10 to 20 kg of dust is generated per tonne of liquid steel produced. Thus, the reuse of these wastes can be a great to companies, because it reduces the amount of raw material to be extracted and reducing disposal costs [5,6]."

The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. Sulphide ore-bodies of more or less lenticular shape occurring in metamorphic crystalline schists, gneisses, and slates, and conforming closely in strike and usually in dip to the inclosing rock, have been recognized and described along the Atlantic seaboard from Quebec to Alabama. The ore-bodies do not entirely conform, in all cases, to the structure of the inclosing schists, but they sometimes cut across the foliation in dip, though conforming more closely with the direction of strike. In composition the principal sulphide mineral is usually py-rite or pyrrhotite, or both, accompanied by copper, frequently gold, and almost always some sphalerite and galenite. Other metallic ores are, so far as these sulphide bodies have been investigated, less common; silver is not uncommon, and in some of the pyrrhotite masses nickel is present in quantity sufficient to be commercially valuable. Cobalt frequently accompanies the nickel, usually in smaller amount, and the two vary much in relative proportion. Quartz and calcite are probably the most common of the non-metallic minerals. A number of silicate minerals are frequent representatives in one place or another ; garnet, am phi-bole, biotite, pyroxene, zoisite and others. The sulphide bodies of Virginia, comprising both pyrite and pyrrhotite, are among the most extensive along the Atlantic seaboard. Among the pyrite bodies may be mentioned the well-known and extensively worked mines of Louisa and Prince William counties, located on the main pyrite belt (A, Fig. 1) of the middle and northern, eastern Piedmont region in Virginia, and among the pyrrhotite bodics is the famous " Great Gossan Lead" (13, Fig. 1) of the Floyd-Carroll-Grayson coun-

Neste trabalho foi caracterizada a influência da evolução microestrutural e da composição química de aços austeníticos HP-Nb na resposta magnética detectada pela técnica de microscopia de força magnética (MFM). Além disso, também foi determinada a influência das forças eletrostáticas no sinal detectado por tal método, através da implementação da técnica de microscopia por força Kelvin (KPFM). Para este estudo, foram analisadas quatro amostras, que foram extraídas de dois tubos de reforma a vapor com diferentes composições químicas. Cada uma das amostras estudadas foi extraída de uma região do tubo exposta a diferentes temperaturas resultando em distintos estados de evolução microestrutural. Segundo os resultados obtidos, apenas as amostras com estado de envelhecimento I exibiram resposta magnética nas interfaces matriz-carbetos.

"INTRODUCTION The use of wet drilling with adequate ventilation has largely controlled production of dust in drilling rock; however, in some operations, such as shaft sinking and modern tunnel driving, when each of a number of drills is operating in a small cross-sectional area, it is at times difficult to ventilate well enough to keep the dust concentration within desired limits.Some chemical compounds, known as wetting agents, when added to water in small quantities reduce the interfacial tension and make it possible for the solution to wet dust particles more effectively than water alone.This report presents results of tests on the effectiveness of two wetting solutions in reducing the amount of dust produced by wet drilling in basalt.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe tests were conducted at the Bureau's Mount Weather Testing Adit, Mount Weathe, Va. The author has known Professor Wadsworth since the 1960s, when interest in the application of microbial technology for metallurgical processes was beginning its rapid rise. The development of bioleaching and mineral biooxidation was advanced, in part, by Wadsworth's belief in the potential for its application, as well as by his numerous contributions to the understanding of the fundamentals of hydro-metallurgy. Wadsworth is recognized for fostering research and development of the field and adding credibility to microbiological-based metallurgical processes, now often referred to as biohydrometallurgy. This Wadsworth Award is recognition of the field of biohy-drometallurgy. It is an honor to serve as a representative for all those individuals involved in research and commercial development of this technology. Modern commercial application of biohydromctallurgy began with the bioleaching of copper from submarginal-grade. run-of-mine material. Kennecott Copper successfully developed this process in the 1950s at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. Other mining operations around the world followed Kennecott's lead. Today, dump bioleaching remains a very low-cost process for scavenging copper from rock that cannot be economically processed by any other method. Despite the commercial success of dump bioleaching, little effort has been made to enhance the micro Biological component of this leach process. Expansion of biohydro metallurgy into recovery of other metals did not occur until the mid-1980s, when the first commercial plant for the pretreatment of refractory gold-bearing concentrate was commissioned at the Fairview operation in south Africa. Now, processes for copper bioleaching and refractory gold pretreatment are engineered specifically to promote the activity of the microorganisms. This paper reviews the current state of commercial applications of biohydrometallurgy. It examines potential future developments and portrays the role of the microbiologist in facilitating continued growth and commercial acceptance of the technology. The commercia1 examples in this paper illustrate the expansion of microbial processing in the mining industry during the last 20 years.
