The very modest-sized mineral industry of Afghanistan was burdened for another year with problems of internal strife occassioned by the presence of Soviet armed forces. Despite this, production of the few traditional commodities continued, and the mineral industry moved to develop additional mines and plants for both traditional and new products with considerable technical and construction assistance from the U.S.S.R. Among the limited range of mineral commodities for which production was reported, there were no startling changes between 1984 and 1985. Production of both coal and natural gas advanced only slightly, despite substantially higher 5-year plan goals, and cement output was down marginally. Probably the most significant development in 1985 was the Possibility that mine and/or smelter production of copper was initiated during the year.

Much of the ground to be covered by this paper was ably covered by a paper presented by Messrs. Morrow and Jordan1 before a joint meeting of the Iron and Steel Section of the Engineers Society of West-ern Pennsylvania and the A.I.M.E. Pitts-burgh Section at Pittsburgh in the spring of 1940. As that paper was not published, the present authors have availed them-selves of Mr. Morrow's kind permission to use information given therein. Similar figures for the latest years available have been added to many statistics originally presented. It is unfortunate that Mr. Jordan's death removes his stimulating guidance and help, which the authors would have welcomed and have found invaluable in the past. One interested in the Pittsburgh seam should not fail to read the exhaustive and authoritative paper by Eavenson2 presented in 1938. As Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties contain practically all the reserves and furnish nearly all of the production from the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania at the present time, this area only is intended when reference is made to the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania. On much of the seam in Greene and Washington Counties, which contain a large proportion of the total reserves, insufficient data are available to determine the detailed characteristics of the seam with any degree of finality. It is hoped that the data presented here will fairly well indicate the probable characteristics. Economic Importance of the Pittsburgh Seam The Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania is of primary importance as a coal resource, not only because of its substantial reserves but because it contributes such a large proportion of the coal used in the country and an even larger proportion of that used in the manufacture of coke. Mr. Ashley3 placed the estimated recoverable reserves (1935) of the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania at 7,500,000,000 tons.* Although a considerable portion of this tonnage is not now suitable for coking coal, because of its high sulphur content, undoubtedly the supply of coking coal will last for many years and that not suitable for coking will furnish industry with an ample supply of energy. In attempting to assess the contribution of the Pittsburgh seam to total coal production and to that of coal used in making coke, one finds that the statistics published annually by the U. S. "The behavior of electrochemically depositing silicon in a molten high-melting-point fluoride electrolyte was studied at 1300 °C. The cathodic product was characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS. Though the analysis of structure and composition of deposition, it could certify that silicon deposited on the Mo rod and alloyed with molybdenum. A series of tests had been performed on the cathodic behavior of Si4+ ions in BaF 2-CaF 2-Na2S iF 6 molten salt. The influence of electrochemical parameters on the cathodic deposition of silicon was also investigated. The electrochemical behavior of Si4+ ions in applied fluoride melts was observed to proceed according to one-step reaction.IntroductionGreenhouse warming has been a serious global issue. lt is increasingly urgent for clean and renewable energy. Effective utilization of clean and inexhaustible solar energy has become very important. Solar cell (especially poly-Si solar cell) production has significantly increased this decade, as there is a growing demand for clean energy. Since the early 1980s, the annual growth of the photovoltaic (PY) solar cell industry is more than 30%. More than 90% of the annual solar cell production is based on crystalline silicon wafers. This rapid growth leads to a shortage of silicon of the adequate quality and price for the continued growth of this industry [I , 2J. The most conunonly used technology to produce silicon is the so-called Siemens process. This technology, involves the forming of gaseous Si compounds such as trichlorosilane (SiHCli) or silane (SiH4) with subsequent thermal decomposition of these back to Si. This technology is associated with transformations from solid to gas, and then back to solid phase, which lead to high irreversible thermodynamic losses and subsequent high energy consumption, the energy cost being around 200kWh/kg Si [3l_ The purity of the material from this process is very high (9 to 11 N). In general, what is needed for solar cell purposes are reported to require 4 to 6 N quality. To promote continued growth of the silicon-based PY industry, there is need for a low-energy silicon production process which can produce large amounts of silicon with an acceptable quality and a lower price particularly."

Proceeding from statistical data on the development of waste volume, an endeavour was made to characterise waste materials with regard to the applicability of treatments based on mineral processing. Many types of waste are characterised by a high heterogeneity. The separation processes used for processing raw minerals can also be used for separation of various waste mixtures. For some waste mixtures, differences in properties can be utilised for separation which are mostly less distinctive for raw minerals. State-of-the-art technology is illustrated with selected Examples.

DISCOVERY of a commercial ore deposit has resulted from a program emphasizing geophysical techniques and concentrating upon exploration of alluvial-covered areas. United Geophysical Co. selected these areas as offering the best possibility of success, for here the surface evidence of ore deposits has been hidden from the eyes of prospector and geologist alike. Pima mining district, Pima County, Arizona, was selected for initial exploration. The project was successful in that a commercial ore deposit was discovered and proved through drilling and extensive underground development. A limited region of activity was chosen and library research was begun on available economic and regional geological publications relating to the mining districts. Field reconnaissance of those districts which seemed to hold exploration possibilities provided a general picture and ascertained the existence of alluvial-covered areas of interest. At the conclusion of the reconnaissance trips all data obtained were compiled, and the district which seemed to present the best exploration possibilities was selected by statistical methods. The statistical summary was based on the following considerations: Geological Factors: 1—type of intrusive, P—presence of favorable host rocks, 3—apparent intensity of mineralization, and 4—presence of favorable structure in covered or unexplored areas. Economic Factors: 1—past production from district or mine; 2—size, shape, grade, and type of ore deposit in the district; 3—ease of acquiring mineral rights; and 4—general development facility. Exploration Favorability Factors: 1—results to be anticipated from geological methods alone; 2—application of geophysical methods, namely, topographic conditions, surface interference, depth-size relation, physical property contrasts as related to ores or controlling structural features; and 3—drilling factors. Admittedly, many of these, factors do not lend themselves to absolute evaluation, but relative evaluation, subject to inaccuracies of personal judgment, is always possible. A relative scale from 1 to 10 was established for every factor, representing varying degrees of favorability. For each district a numerical evaluation of each factor was established and a numerical total determined. The obvious advantage of this scheme is that a more concise summation can be presented by numerical means than can be achieved by descriptive means. After a district had been selected as favorable, the first step was to carry out more detailed geological and economic studies to narrow down the areas of interest. The second step was to compile all available geological data from publications and add to these data by mapping where necessary. Geological interpretation and projection of structural or other control into covered or unexplored areas was made whenever logical. To determine the possibilities of geophysical application and to select a geophysical method, physical property contrasts were related to mineral assemblages and/or structural control. EVEN in the choice of his birthplace and parents, Donald B. Gillies indicated clearly the trend of his professional career. He was born on Nov. 4, 1872, at Bruce Mines, in Ontario. His father and mother came from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, to Nova Scotia, moved from there to Canada, and finally settled in the copper country in the northern peninsula of Michigan, where the senior Mr. Gillies followed mining as an occupation. Donald's early education was in the public schools and he graduated from Linden Lake (Mich.) high school in 1890. Following the family interest in mining he entered the Michigan Mining School, now Michigan College of Mining and Technology. There he was the rare student who excelled both in athletics and scholastic work. On the athletic field he was a crack football player and track roan. A computational method for the simulation of mold filling processes is described. The method is based on the representation of the flowing or deforming medium as a collection of mutually interacting parcels of material. Instantaneous positions of individual material parcels are calculated by numerical integration of the dynamic equations, subject to appropriate initial and boundary conditions. So far, the method has been used to produce qualitative simulations of some flowing and deforming systems encountered in mold filling technology, and our findings are summarized herein. In all cases, individual material particle motions can be followed in detail, allowing critical examination of potentially problematic mold design features.

UNTIL quite recently, Alsace was the only district in France where petroleum could be found in somewhat industrial quantities. The Pechelbronn fields produce, however, only about 80,000 tons a year, which represent approximately one-eighth of the domestic consumption. Much research work has been done in Alsace to find the prolongation of the Pechelbronn fields, but instead of oil the drillings revealed the existence of large deposits of potash. This can, be easily explained when one remembers that the Pechelbronn oil is of the Oligocene period, and, that in the Alsatian stratification the Oligocene lies immediately on the Keuper, i. e., on the strata that originate from a period during which the largest salt and potash deposits were constituted. Before the war, and mostly at the end of the last century, some wells were drilled in various districts of France where some analogies could be found with the Alsatian geology, the borings being mainly made in the Triassic and Tertiary beds. They led to negative results. After the war, the growing importance of oil urged the necessity of resuming the explorations. But it is our belief. that this was greatly facilitated by the enacting of new legislation, which is embodied in the Mine Act of May 16, 1922.

INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. The definition of this parameter for the considered type of detector is TDR2 = D1•D2-1. One can expect the simple proportion to hold: [ ]

This paper describes the scientific data acquisition, data interpretation, and sophisticated 3-dimensional modeling processes of an ongoing gas well stability research program by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs and the parallel 3-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that overburden depth, overburden geology, surface topographic relief, strata dip of the coal measure rocks, and casing cementing alternatives are the dominant factors affecting longwall-induced subsurface deformations and gas well casing stresses. Topographic relief could produce localized longwall-induced deformations if weak-to-strong rock interfaces are present near the bottom of stream valleys. Strata dip has significant impact on longwall-induced subsurface deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impacts on longwall-induced deformations and gas well casing stresses.

INTRODUCTION The Ningyo-toge Mine is located in the western part of Honshu, about 800 km from Tokyo. Since the discovery of uranium ore deposit at Ningyo-toge in 1955, different kinds of mining and milling tests have been carried out. A new pilot plant of milling and UF6 conversion is also being under construction. Operations are scheduled to start by the end of this year. In 1979, the uranium enrichment pilot plant was constructed at Ningyo-toge and test operations have started. Thus, the Ningyo-toge area is assigned to undertake the Research and Development of the upstream of the nuclear fuel cycle in Japan. PNC has been strengthening its security measures more than ever. This paper will focus on the disposal of wasted material, especially on the disposal of heap leaching residue, in Japan. URANIUM ORE DEPOSITS The uranium of the Ningyo-toge Mine is characterized genetically by epigenetic sedimentary type deposits. They occur in the host rock of Neogene tertiary fluviatile conglomerates and sandstones which unconformably overlies the Mesozoic-Palaeogene granitic basement covered with lucustrine deposits and volcanic ejecta. More than 12 deposits have been found over the area of approximately 160 km2, and distribution of the deposits are strongly controlled by the so-called channel structure, probably remnants of paleo-streams on the denudation surface of the underlying grantic basement. Each ore body has different shape and dimension respectively, but about 2-3 meters thickness with the average grade of 0.05-0.2% U308 is common feature of the ore bodies. The ore is soft and loose, and it is composed of common rock forming minerals of allogenic origin and their altered products. The chemical composition of the ore depends on the constituents of the country rocks or the pebbles. A primary mineral, ningyoite and secondary mineral, autunite are major ore minerals, although three primary tetravalent minerals and thirteen secondary hexavalent minerals have also been detected. MINING EXPERIMENT Since 1959, various types of underground mining tests have been carried out at Ningyo-toge Mine. The room and pillar method was safe and simple, although the uranium ore recovery was below 70%. After experiment of the retreating long-wall method and slicing mining method, it was found that the modified long wall method was the most appropriate for the underground mining of the Ningyo-toge uranium deposits. This method was completed successfully to increase efficiency up to 2 or 3 times, as compared to conventional methods. MILLING EXPERIMENT In 1964, a small test mill was constructed at Ningyo-toge, and a milling experiment using the Ningyo-toge uranium ore was started. Re-modelling of equipments and improvement of the process lead to the establishment of the technique of the so-called wet process, and produce UF4 directly from the ore. Mesabi Range blasting has evolved in over a century of mining. The obstacles including: hard and heavily jointed rock, bitter winters and frequent wet holes; combine to create a unique challenge for blasters. This paper documents current pattern designs, powder selection and loading practices for these seven mines that consumes as much as 130 million lbs of explosives each year. Blasting is characterized by wide burdens and spacings, large diameter holes (up to 16-inch) and bulk loading of augered and pumped emulsion/prill products.

IN this paper an attempt is made to describe the sluicing operations on the tin fields of north-eastern Tasmania. No claim is made to completeness, for much of the ground has already been covered, and nothing is to be gained by needless repetition. On this account some portions of the subject have obviously received but scanty attention in order that others may be rather more fully dealt with; for instance, figures referring to the accuracy of various methods of valuing alluvial deposits, particulars of efficiencies, and water duties on both overburden and drift; also, the system of recording water distribution, &c.The plans of the tin-streaming shed, sluice and feed·race, and overburden tail-race represent types of the most modern design.The principal alluvial deposits being worked at the present time are situated either in the ancient or modern bed of the Ringarooma river or its tributaries. The United States Steel Mining Company, Inc., (USM) Lynch District, operated the No. 37 Mine in the Harlan coal seam, Harlan County, Kentucky, from 19'2 until its sale to Arch of Kentucky in 1984. Overburden depth varied from 400 to 2000 feet and mining height varied from 8 to 12 feet. In 1981, because of deep overburden, high seam height, and previous pillar stability problems, U. S. Steel Research and the Lynch Mining District entered into a joint project to measure longwall pillar stress. Eight gateroad pillars were instrumented with a total of 86 vibrating-wire stressmeters under overburden depths varying from 500 to 1550 feet. Stress-increase measurements were taken during: (1) pillar development, (2) retreat of longwall panel No. 1, and (3) retreat of longwall panel No. 2. Total average pillar stress was approximately three times the pre-mining stress with total stress at an individual meter reading 5.5 times the pre-mining stress. When maximum, measured average pillar stress was compared to pillar strength predicted by several popular pillar design methods, the pillars were found to be stronger than predicted. This paper will summarize the pillar instrumentation program and present the results. Stress distributions, average measured pillar stress, and comparison of measured pillar stress to predicted pillar strength by several design methods will be given.

Filters and absorbents purify, clarify, and clean many types of liquids by removing solid particles. In addition, absorbents provide a convenient way to handle liquids and to clean up liquid wastes or spills. Filtration or absorptive processes are accomplished either in a mechanical way, as in absorption and filtration, or in a chemical way, as in adsorption. In filtration, minerals and rocks used as filter mediums are extensively utilized in applications requiring the filtration of high volumes of liquids. End use applications include liquid food products, waste waters, petroleum and chemicals, and drugs and pharmaceuticals. Upon closer examination of all of the materials used as filters and absorbents, industrial minerals and rocks represent only a small proportion of the total amount, as shown in [Fig. 1] (Rees, 1991). Given all the industries that use these minerals, most of the volume is concentrated in a few major end-use markets. Within these major end-use markets, a handful of minerals account for most of the total volume and value. The focus for this chapter will be to discuss the industrial minerals and rocks used as filters and absorbents in the most important markets. The selection of the minerals and markets to review is solely based on the total volume of material used and in special cases, those where the value of the market and material is high. The major materials include diatomite, perlite, sand, gravel, and such specialty clays as montmorillonite and attapulgite. These materials are mainly used for the filtration of food, chemical, and petroleum products. In addition, they are used as absorbents for pet litter and oil and grease spills, and as carriers for pesticides and fertilizers.

Laves phases, AB2, are considered as Izerrzisub-stitutional solutions m1hich are defined by a one-for-truo replacement scheme. Atomic-size tnisfit is considered in terms of deviations of the ratio 2V°b/V°A from unity, where v° = atomic volume. A simple elastic model has been used to calculated deviations from "Vegard&apos;s law of atomic vol-umes". Comparison has been made between calculated and observed atomic-volume deviations fov 222 Laves phases. Agreement is generally very good although there ave some few exceptions which appear to be excusable in terms of electronic changes that ore beyond the scope of the present model. We can consider the formation of a binary sub-stitutional solution A-B from an A solvent as one-for-one replacements of A atoms by B atoms. As the atomic-size ratio deviates from unity, the solution becomes thermodynamically less stable and hence more restricted because of atomic-misfit strain energy. In accordance with our previously presented conclusion1 that the atomic volume, v, is in general the most appropriate measure of atomic size, the ideal size ratio for a binary sub-stitutional solution is vg/vA = 1. The Laves phases have been described by Berry and Raynor2 in terms of various stacking sequences of hexagonal layers of B atoms for the three structures MgZn2(C14), MgCu2(C15), and MgNi2(C36). To form the Laves phase of ideal composition AB, we start with complete hexagonal layers of B atoms in the appropriate stacking sequence and we remove, according to an appropriate scheme for each structure, two out of every four B atoms and replace the two removed atoms by one A atom. We thus might expect to find that the ideal size ratio for the Laves phases is 2v/B/ VA= 1. From this point of view, then, we call Laves phases hemi-substitutional solutions since we employ one-for-two replacements. By analogy with substitutional solutions we can expect for Laves phases that as the ratio 2VB/Va deviates from unity the phase occurrence will be more restricted. Laves3 has plotted the distribution of Laves phases as a function of the radius ratio, ?A/rB, and found that, while the distribution extended from 1.05 < rA/B < 1.50, the
